‘Star Trek’ fans boldly go – to the Mall of America

Long time Star Trek fan Dana Erickson. from West St. Paul has her picture taken by her daughter Megan Erickson, also of West St. Paul, as she sits in the captains chair on the bridge display of at Star Trek: The Exhibition, at the Mall of America, Thursday May 15, 2014. The exhibit features props and displays from the Star Trek shows. (Pioneer Press: John Autey)

Long time Star Trek fan Dana Erickson. from West St....

“Star Trek” caretaker Sebastian Schubert is a bit of a wreck when the dozens of props, costumes, scale models and other items in his care are being moved from city to city.

“I do not sleep well when they’re traveling,” said Schubert, of Vienna, Austria. “That is when you can’t control them. … They’re a big responsibility.”

All that memorabilia from t he famous science-fiction television programs and motion pictures recently arrived safely at the Mall of America’s exhibition center.

But poor Schubert remained sleep-deprived this week.

Schubert is production manager for EMS Entertainment ‘s “ Star Trek: The Exhibition ,” debuting at the Bloomington megamall on Friday, and he has been scrambling to get everything set up in time — and in a manner that is up to zealous Trekkers’ exacting standards.

“You have to be a little nerdy to work here,” said Schubert, who was not a superfan as a child. “There’s no way to install this here without knowing about ‘Star Trek.’ That is the challenging part.”

Schubert has boned up on the “Star Trek” movies, and several of the TV shows — but admits he has yet to wend his way through “Star Trek: Deep Space 9” and “Star Trek: Voyager.” He has an affinity for two crucial “Star Trek” villains, Khan Noonien Singh, played by Ricardo Montalban, and Shinzon from the movie “Star Trek: Nemesis.”

Even so, Schubert is bracing for a scolding or two from “Star Trek” sticklers. A Trekkie once dressed him down for having the wrong number of pips on the uniform of Jean-Luc Picard, captain of the USS Enterprise on “Star Trek: The Next Generation.”

Schubert took a few breaths and refrained from reprising the “ get a life ” tirade made famous by William Shatner, the first “Trek” TV captain, in a “Saturday Night Live” skit.

“I just say, ‘Yes, you’re right, thank you,’ ” Schubert said while sipping an energy drink provided by a Mall of America staffer. “I learn to deal with this, and everything is fine.”

The dozens of items in “Star Trek: The Exhibition” include original costumes worn by human and alien characters, Enterprise scale models in that iconic starship’s various incarnations, and sets that include the original Enterprise bridge along with the sickbay and engineering deck from “Next Generation.”

Visitors will be able to repose in James Tiberius Kirk’s Enterprise-bridge command chair and have their pictures taken for geeky posterity.

“It is the heart of the exhibition, in my opinion, that fans will like the most,” Schubert said. “Who wouldn’t want to sit on the bridge of ‘Star Trek?’ “

The exhibit is due to run for six months.

Greg Ayres has been screaming into microphones for close to 25 years now! With over 376 credits to his name, he has managed to play a variety of characters that are almost as colorful as his hair. He was honored to recently return to his role of Son Goku in Saiyuki Reload Zeroin, having worked on the Saiyuki franchise for over 20 years. He can currently be heard as Po in Eminence and Shadow, As Kenta Kanzaki in The Dangers in My Heart, Yu Nishinoya in Haikyu, Chai in Shenmue The Animation on Adult swim, and a super bad demon known only as “God” in Dark Gathering. Some other recent roles include Chota Segawa in Alice in Borderland ( OAV ), Sho Utsumi in SSSSGridman, Frost in DragonBall Super, Geo in Sony Picture’s Starship Troopers : Traitor of Mars, Jiro in Concrete Revolutio, Ryuuou Edogawa in Doreiku, Koji Koda in My Hero Academia, and he even makes an appearance as Popuko in Pop Team Epic.

He is proud to be a part of the new “Pink Harvest” productions from Sentai Filmworks, in the roles of Izumi Sena in Lovestage, and Yabase in Hitorijime My Hero. Some other recent favorites include Nagisa Haruki in Free, and Free Eternal Summer, MonoKuma in Danganronpa, Clear in Dramatical Murder, Doug in Gangsta, Zenji Marui in Food Wars, Ganta Igarashi in Deadman Wonderland, Heihachi Hayashida in Samurai 7, and Kouichi Sakakibara in Another. Some of his all-time favorite roles include Chrono in Chrono Crusade, Kaoru Hitachiin in Ouran High School Host Club, Hideki in Nerima Daikon Brothers, Youhei Sunohara in Clannad, Yuki in The Wallflower, Leo in Ghost Stories, Satoshi Hiwatari in DNAngel, Kaworu Nagisa in the Director’s Cut of Neon Genesis Evangelion, Tomoki Sakurai in Heaven’s Lost Property, and Negi Springfield in Negima.

Of all of his many roles, his favorite will always be the real life role of “Little Brother” to voice actor Christopher Ayres. The little guy with a big Sippy Cup, and even bigger heart – who touched the world with his “Love and Laughter”.

Quinton Flynn is beloved globally as Axel/Lea from Kingdom Hearts and Raiden from Metal Gear Solid 2, 4 and Rising Revengeance (for which he received a Best Actor Award). Fans Love Flynn as: Kon in Bleach, Iruka Sensai in Naruto, Reno in Final Fantasy, Jhin in League of Legends, Timon in Timon & Pumbaa, and many others!

Quinton’s Classic Legacy Characters: Micky Mouse, Spider-Man, Venom, Human Torch, Jonny Quest, Gollum and more pop up often in his solo comedic improvisational Q&A convention panels along with celebrity impressions, song and audience participation.

His impressions and sound-a-likes have been featured on Jimmy Kimmel Live! as Paul McCartney, Mindhunter as Frank Sinatra, Robot Chicken as Elmer Fudd, Draco Malfoy and Swiper The Fox, The Adventures of Billy & Mandy as Christopher Walken, The Mystery of Natalie Wood as James Dean, Cartoon Hook Ups as Deadpool

Flynn seamlessly shape shifts from the deep, sinister and sexy, mad-scientist, Dr. Krankcase – Skylanders: Trap Team, to the polite and earnest Silver The Hedgehog in the Sonic game series! And his twisted Irish hitman Sir Henry Cooldown provided the right spice in the action-adventure hack and slash video games No More Heroes 1 & 2. He also lent his vocal gymnastics to – Star Wars: The Old Republic, Avatar The Last Airbender, Crash Bandicoot, Mass Effect, World of Warcraft, Batman Arkham City Origins, Lord Of the Rings and Pirates of the Caribbean to name a few.

Flynn’s Fan Favorite, the lovably nerdy Sheldon Lee, is back in My Life As A Teenage Robot on Amazon Prime! The resurgence of interest in that Nickelodeon animated gem also features Quinton as the heroic Sliver Shell and the despicable Don Prima + more than 50 other incidental voices!! So, Get In Like Flynn!

Conventions FAQ

What's a tv show / movie convention .

A convention is an event that usually takes place during two or three days and is dedicated to one or more anime, TV show(s), comics or movie(s).

Organized mainly by fans associations, conventions give fans the opportunity to participate in Q&A with the actors, take pictures with them, get autographs or spend a moment with them during a Meet & Greet.

A TV show, anime, comics or movie convention, is also the opportunity to participate to many activities during the event : quizz, lottery, karaoke... while meeting new people.

They also allow fans to chat with one another about a same center of interest and to return home with a lot of unforgettable memories.

How to participate in a convention ?

To attend a convention, you must purchase a pass from the convention organizer's ticketing website. Passes can give you access to one or more days, depending on which one you choose.

It's important to remember that you can't enter the convention without a pass.

In addition to passes, organizers sell extras for activities with guests. These may include photo ops, autograph sessions, meet and greets, and so on. These must be purchased in addition to the pass. If you bought extras without a pass, you won't be able to do them, and you've wasted money.

star trek convention minnesota

| July 16, 2021 | By: TrekMovie.com Staff 11 comments so far

This year Creation Entertainment’s big August convention has a new name, but they are still rounding up a wide array of Star Trek talent from the classic shows and the new shows, all converging in Las Vegas Nevada starting on August 11.

Stars align for STLV 2021

After Star Trek Las Vegas skipped 2020 for obvious reasons, Creation Entertainment returns to the Rio Suites Hotel from August 11-15 with an event now being called the 55-Year Mission Tour Las Vegas, celebrating the 55th anniversary of the Star Trek franchise. This year also marks the 50th anniversary of Creation Entertainment running in-person conventions and they are expecting over 15,000 Star Trek fans in attendance to help celebrate the milestone.

Celebrity headliners include classic Star Trek’s William Shatner, George Takei, Nichelle Nichols, and Walter Koenig; Sonequa Martin-Green and Anthony Rapp from Star Trek: Discovery; The Next Generation’s (and now Picard’s ) Brent Spiner; Deep Space Nine’s Terry Farrell and Nana Visitor,  Voyager’s (and now Picard’s ) Jeri Ryan; and in his first Trek con appearance, six-time Emmy Award-winner Kelsey Grammer (Captain Morgan Bateson from Star Trek: The Next Generation ).

There are also dozens of more stars and guest stars from The Original Series , The Next Generation , Deep Space Nine , Voyager , Enterprise , Discovery , and Picard. Along with guest stars from Star Trek movies. A number of behind-the-scenes Star Trek vets are also lined up, including Ronald D. Moore and Ronald B. Moore, Jeff Russo, Brannon Braga, Mike and Denise Okuda, and many more. The full guest list can be found at creationent.com .

Special tributes and celebration of science

The 55-Year Mission con will feature a number of special tributes:

  • A tribute is planned for superstar William Shatner (legendary Captain Kirk) for his milestone 90th birthday. Featured will be a video tribute to his amazing career, narrated by the man himself, as he shares some of his favorite memories! Creation will also be sharing his convention highlights throughout the years.
  • Gene Roddenberry’s 100th birthday will be given a special tribute as we celebrate and honor the life and career of the legendary creator of Star Trek.
  • The late Leonard Nimoy, who would have turned 90 this year, will be honored with a special fine art photography exhibit as well as video footage of his convention appearance highlights.

And there are several unique science panels by leading industry expert Dr. Mohamed Noor, Dean of Natural Sciences at Duke University and science consultant for Star Trek which will focus on how real-life science equates with the Star Trek universe. Dr. David Williams, a renowned planetary geologist with Arizona State University and consultant of many NASA planetary missions, will discuss the exploration of our solar system and its many diverse planets, moons and asteroids and as well as the past and future exploration of Saturn’s largest moon.

Special events

The 55-Year Mission includes special nighttime programming, including the Saturday Night Gala Celebration with the Nevada Pops Orchestra. This special night features Maestro Richard McGee and a 45-piece orchestra who will honor Gene Roddenberry’s 100th birthday and his legacy and impact. Special guest conductors will be Dennis McCarthy and Jeff Russo. Anthony Rapp and Isa Briones will perform with the orchestra. The concert will take place Saturday, August 14 at 9:30 p.m. (a separate ticket of $75 is required for general admission).

If you want to get married in Las Vegas-style with a little Star Trek you can say “I do” on The Original Series bridge or The Next Generation’s 10 Forward replicas. Wedding packages start at $1500 (include ceremony and photo session at location) and can accommodate up to 50 guests.

For cosplayers, Saturday offers the costume competition with celebrity judges, special on-stage costume panels, the annual costume parade throughout the convention, and a number of cosplayer meet-ups are all scheduled. Garak’s Tailor and Repair will be returning to handle any emergency costume repairs for free throughout the weekend.

In addition, there will be more behind-the-scenes presentations, costume and trivia contests, no-minimum bid auctions of unique collectibles and one-of-a-kind items, and special fan-made music videos. The exhibit hall will boast major companies and distributors selling and displaying sci-fi collectibles from across the universe.

I hope it all goes well for everyone. Nevada is currently not trending in the right way for anything Covid related. You can also pretty much assume that it will be almost exclusively US attendees, given the various restrictions for international travel. I’m more than content to wait another year and go to a convention where I will actually enjoy being there. The official Chicago convention looks like it may be expensive to attend given the downtown location and cost of staying anywhere close to it. So assuming Vegas is a go in 2022, that will be the one I’m aiming for.

The Delta Variant might have something to say about this. If you buy tickets don’t b**ch about having to produce proof of vaccination.

Or wear a mask.

Hmm, Delta Variant… Starfleet Delta insignia. I smell a conspiracy!

/s (hopefully everyone figured that out, but just in case…)

Let us hope we can have this come off as planned. We have waited a long time and more importantly, we really need this (no pun intended) shot in the arm to give us a ray of hope. It will be so nice to see our Trek friends in person. Zoom was good but its not like seeing people face to face.

I’m not going to any live conventions until covid dies down. And there will probably be worse variants after Delta. My whole family is at high risk, and the Israeli study shows Pfizer (which we all got) is only 93 percent effective against preventing hospitalization. That’s almost 1 in every 14 people. Pfizer thinks it’s closer to 98%. Okay, 1 in every 50 is better odds, but still not odds I’m willing to play with my family’s health on the line. It seems we’re the only people still wearing masks in public where we are (Iowa), and it’s freaky as hell. Here’s to hoping people stay safe in Vegas, with masks and vaccination cards on hand.

Yeah Star trek is not worth dying for

If this gets cancelled due to COVID, what will happen if I already bought tickets and paid for an autograph?

I popped over to the website. Admissions tickets are non refundable, and photo tickets appear to be refundable for credit only, and only if the celebrity guest cancels. Let the buyer beware…

As someone who has had ticket refund/rollover twice now, if Clark County or the feds nix mass gatherings, you’ll get an email from Creation informing you of that and giving you the option of requesting a refund or rolling the ticket over to the next available date.

Who the Q is Ronald B. Moore? Ronald D. moore’s mirror counterpart?
