Review - Nathaniel Rateliff @ the Orpheum Theatre (11/15/23)

nathaniel rateliff tour 2023 review

It seems almost nonsensical to say that Nathaniel Rateliff and his 10-piece band brought an intimate performance to San Francisco’s Orpheum Theatre on Wednesday night, but that is exactly what the passionate audience received. His “And It’s Still Alright Tour” focused on Rateliff’s more sensitive solo material, rather than his high energy work with “The Night Sweats” that made him a household name. The tour that began before Covid in 2020 and was interrupted by a full band tour - was finally approaching its finish. “It took us four years to bring you this show,” Rateliff told the audience.

“For those of you who are surprised by the songs in this setlist and didn’t read the very large print about this tour, I’m sorry.” Indeed, the only Night Sweats song to show up Wednesday was “Still Out There Running.” “We never play it with the Night Sweats because it feels like it’s gonna take the steam out of the show.” Indeed, the show didn’t have a steam engine locomotive pace he’s known for. Rather, it felt like a lovely Sunday drive through the redwoods and along the Pacific coast. The songs found their power in Rateliff’s clear voice bringing home all their emotions, the elevating harmonies of his terrific backing band and the added depth of well-timed inclusions of the 4-person strings section.

“Tonight #2” saw a darkened start to the concert with Rateliff and his acoustic guitar illuminated by barely a candle’s worth of light as his haunting vocals filled the packed theater before the string section kicked in and the supporting musicians layered in their backing vocals. The lights came up brighter and the full band kicked in for “All of Nothing.” “Expecting to Lose” found a fun groove – the song’s vibe had it stagger down the street like a happy drunk walking home after closing time.

“Shroud” was delivered as the night’s first big rocker – supported by red lighting and keeping a skip pace with interludes of Rateliff and his beautiful harmonizers interspersing lines like “I’ve got no feeling about it at all” stretched out gracefully. Rateliff’s two drummer support was crucial in this song, driving the pace forward and adding layers to the rhythm. The string accompaniment of “Something Beautiful” was spectacular as the song was elevated from a piano-focused fun, frustrated love song to a symphonic expression of its possibilities.

“You Need Me” was highlighted by lighting that was reminiscent of the late 60’s – early 70’s American Bandstand with the lyric “It’s like you’re telling me now in the middle of the shit “I need you”” sung so sweetly. “What a Drag” took the crowd into a Phil Specter-like mixing with Laurel Canyon guitar sounds. After playing the lone Night Sweats’ entry of “Still Out There Running,” Rateliff stripped the sound way down with just his guitar to open “I Am,” before he was slowly joined by keyboards, and the two drummers to bring the song to a powerful end.

“These songs were huge in Germany and the Netherlands and then no one cared about them,” Rateliff joked. “But I’m excited to share them with you tonight.” With that, he launched into “Boil & Fight” off 2010’s In Memory of Loss . He was supported by beautiful slide guitar throughout the song. Rateliff dedicated “You Should’ve Seen the Other Guy” to his bootlegging great grandfather and then went into the tender “Early Spring Till” delivered with acoustic guitar and piano accompaniment and sung with a wounded howl. Indeed, Rateliff’s solo songs are deeply personal and often at least semi-autobiographical of a long, not easy journey with loss and pain dotting his path.

On the other hand, “Kissing Our Friends” was presented as a sweet take on being lonely before a gorgeous version of “Oil & Lavender” gave another opportunity for the string section to add deep emotion to a song. Rateliff delivered the song at a crawl, plucking every feather of emotion as the strings filled the nearly century-old theater (1926).

“Putting (“And It’s Still Alright”) out in 2020 was my way of figuring out how to deal with loss.” The album’s title track was accompanied by images of a psychedelic drive through a forest. “This” came forth with a spooky 1930’s style haunting song with a tango pace and vibe. Opener Kevin Morby joined Rateliff and his band for a cover of Leonard Cohen’s “There is a War” (more about Morby in a moment). Rateliff closed the set with a sparse, acoustic “Still Trying” (with its anchor lyric of “I don’t know a goddamn thing”) and a big, powerful version of “Time Stands.” Returning for the encore, Rateliff encouraged the crowd to stand and the entire audience rose for “Redemption” and its elevating chorus of “Just set me Free” followed by the closing “Mavis.”

Kevin Morby served as the perfect opener for this tour of Rateliff –  provided a transcendent mixture of energy and haunting vocals. It was at least the second time through the Bay Area this year for the prolific Kansas City songwriter who was last seen around here up on Mount Tam for Sound Summit . Morby made multiple mentions of San Francisco and seemed generally thrilled to be back in The City. He dedicated “City Music” to San Francisco and included multiple regional references within Wednesday night’s version.

Delivering songs as a trio with a fellow guitarist and drummer, Morby’s version of “This is a Photograph” – the title track off his 2022 album – with terrific energy and set the crowd abuzz. He followed with an almost spoken word version of “Five Easy Pieces” before sitting at the piano for “Destroyer” and then delivering “Rock Bottom” as he aggressively played his guitar. He finished with a sweet and slow version of “Beautiful Stranger” and received a very warm ovation from the capacity crowd.

As many conflicts raged throughout San Francisco with the APEC controversies, Nathaniel Rateliff and Kevin Morby brought forth a supreme night of inner, emotional turmoil brought forward in a heartfelt, accessible and beautiful concert that will be well remembered by those in attendance. The demonstrated the power of great songwriting and soul-filled performances to resonate inside each of us internally while pulling us together as a collective.

'We Leave Our Egos At The Door': How Nothing But Thieves Harnessed The Light On 'Dead Club City'

Nathaniel Rateliff & The Night Sweats: 'I Feel Like There Still Has To Be Hope'

"In the last year, there were a lot of different things that happened that sort of seemed monumental or big career moments for us."

More Nathaniel Rateliff & The Night Sweats

Nathaniel Rateliff is a storyteller at heart. That skill has led to numerous comparisons to Bob Dylan over the years - it’s not just the similar vocal tone. With The Night Sweats , he’s performed on Saturday Night Live , The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon , NPR’s Tiny Desk , and anywhere else you’re likely to see an artist who’s “made it".

But he’s humble about it all; he’s stunned that he gets mentioned in the same breath as Bob Dylan. “I've always been a huge fan of Bob Dylan,” Rateliff says from his home. It’s winter, actually freezing cold and snowing - soup is needed.

“I think early on, Bob was the first writer I attached myself to,” he adds. “His career spans so many good records, and there's so many different influences from different things he's done. His work with the band was always a huge influence; he’s always had a huge impact on me. I take that as a compliment.”

Having performed in all those spaces, every performance leaves something for Rateliff to learn. “In the last year, there were a lot of different things that happened that sort of seemed monumental or big career moments for us,” he says, such as some incredible venues in the US.

“It's interesting to be in those situations and on new stages - we did Radio City Music Hall in New York City this past year, the Hollywood Bowl, and then our first headlining arena show.” It shows how deeply Rateliff’s music resonates with his audience. When he’s mining the very human, endlessly relatable themes of grief and addiction, it’s difficult not to connect.

“I’m not necessarily compelled to do it [write about personal experiences] intentionally; I sometimes think that just comes out in the writing,” Rateliff admits. And as he gets older, it’s all part of a process of discovering and understanding the places in himself he can’t always reach.

He continues, “A lot of times while I'm writing something, I certainly try to lean into this thing that I feel is outside of myself, whether you want to call that a muse - I don't know what a good name for it is - but we can call it a muse for now, since it's an older term. I feel like I lean into that. A lot of stuff comes with a sort of stream of consciousness, and then you go back and edit some of that to create a song and to create a story.”

Nathaniel Rateliff & The Night Sweats’ most recent album, The Future , released in November 2021, reaches for a deeper meaning in life through retro sounds, including Motown and soul. Rateliff sounds at home in those genres and allows himself to explore bleakness on Something Ain’t Right and Survivor . But as the latter song title suggests, he always finds a way through.

Rateliff explains, “In doing that, sometimes I look back, and you think that, ‘You're not writing about yourself,’ and then I'm always very surprised to find out that I'm just writing about something that I've been going through and just didn't have any idea. I guess it's always a bit of personal discovery; I'm a curious person. And so it keeps me continuing to try to ask questions.”

At first, it was tricky to find motivation for The Future  - in February 2020, Rateliff released the solo album, And It’s Still Alright , and only managed to perform ten shows promoting the record before the Covid-19 pandemic shut everything down.

“I was very discouraged by that,” he shares. However, due to his more remote location, Rateliff and the Night Sweats managed to isolate, hunkered down through the more challenging months of 2020, and by October of that year, began writing what would become The Future .

“There was a lot to write about; there's a lot going on in American politics… there’s a big divide here,” Rateliff reveals. But he didn’t want divided America to be his focus. “I just tried to focus on the stuff that came to me and, you know, that's still always writing in the perspective of how you view the world.

“But, you know, it was tough because I feel like I always try to write from the standpoint of hope, and it felt a little bleak,” he continues. How can you not be disheartened by the world we live in at times? He adds, “We're having crazy wildfires even in the winter here. There are water shortages, while there's also flooding. Australia had monumental, devastating wildfires, so you start to look at the world and think, ‘Oh, I think this might be it.’ But that's not really the message that, even if I might be an internal naysayer, that's not what I really want to project either.

“I feel like there still has to be hope. Just being a human, there's a lot in our humanity that can be hard. And so there's plenty to write about, within that, and the struggles of just what our existence is, and, also, the joys of that.”

Nathaniel Rateliff & The Night Sweats return to Australia for Bluesfest this Easter long weekend. The Byron Bay location and the festival itself mean that the singer-songwriter gets to interact with bands he doesn’t ordinarily have the chance to see. “It's also an opportunity to connect with friends who I haven't seen in a while or friends that are based in the UK, or Europe or the United States,” Rateliff says.

“It’s always amazing to travel the world and run into friends. I love Australia. It seems exotic to me, even though it probably doesn't to you [laughs] - but, you know, I live in the mountains, so it's very different.”

He adds, “Just getting there is a bit of a feat, with jet lag and all the travel. It really makes you want to work hard for your shows, like, you travel all this way. You want to make sure that it's worth it.”

Nathaniel Rateliff & The Night Sweats are performing at Bluesfest this Easter long weekend. In addition to their festival appearances, they will also perform two sideshows in Melbourne and one in Sydney. Buy your tickets  here .

Nathaniel Rateliff Announces 2023 Solo Tour Dates

The post Nathaniel Rateliff Announces 2023 Solo Tour Dates appeared first on Consequence .

Have you ever caught yourself wishing the pandemic never happened, and that all the amazing tours slated for 2020 were never canceled? Well, you might not be able to reverse time, but Nathaniel Rateliff will help make up for everything we missed out on. On Monday, August 7th, he announced that his “And It’s Still Alright Tour” — originally scheduled for 2020 , but then canceled — is back on. Check out the full list of dates below, and grab your tickets here .

Rateliff originally announced the “And It’s Still Alright Tour” in 2019, in support of his acclaimed solo album, And It’s Still Alright . The tour was slated for nine-months and kicked off in Minneapolis on track, but nine days in, the pandemic forced Rateliff to call off the remainder of the dates. Now, Rateliff is set to relaunch the tour, this time with the help of opener Kevin Morby . Starting on November 1st, the two will trek across America, making stops in Boston, Brooklyn, Austin, Los Angeles, and more.

Promising an “intimate” evening of acoustic music, the “And It’s Still Alright Tour” will present Rateliff and his nuanced songcraft in an ideal setting. At times, it will be just Rateliff, his guitar, and his songs — at other points, he’ll be joined by “full 10-piece folk band accompaniment, including a string quartet,” according to the press release.

Tickets become available for pre-sale through Ticketmaster on different dates depending on the show — for more information, and access to the pre-sale code, sign up for Rateliff’s email news blast here . Tickets go on-sale for the general public on Friday, August 11th, at 10 a.m. local time.

Check out the full list of dates below. You can also check out a preview of the tour, thanks to a video Rateliff made in 2020 after he and his crew loaded into Town Hall in New York for a performance. The show and the rest of the tour were canceled before Rateliff could deliver his set, but that didn’t stop him from singing a few songs for the camera. Watch the video below.

From one extreme to the other, the man who had found comfort in solitary performances for years, was not only surrounded by the six-piece Sweats, but also by the seven-piece New Orleans’ Preservation Hall Jazz Band (who had decided to stick around after their opening set for Yonder Mountain the night before). A colossal circus of horns marched out in front of Stage Rock, with the Night Sweats following close behind. With the brass wind at his back, Nathaniel Rateliff returned home on his knees. Dressed all in black (from his hat, all the way down to his boots), with arms outstretched to gather all the love coming his way, Rateliff looked up at the venue like he was seeing it for the first time. Then he channeled all that love into his newfound James Brown persona.

“Good evening everybody!”

Strands of discrete white lighting bounced off saxophones, and trumpets, and even a sousaphone, as New Orleans’ best paid tribute to Colorado’s best. There was something almost religious about what was happening on that stage. Rateliff played the part of a manic preacher who would just as soon send you straight to hell as he would lift you up to the gates of heaven. When he hit those throaty, guttural notes during “I’ve Been Failing”, it sent shivers down my spine. When his feet started to stomp along with the dual percussion of “Look It Here”, I couldn’t control my own extremities from following along. The tambourine came out at one point, and while he beat it against the slip-sliding, kicking-and-screaming legs below him, his perfectly manicured beard stayed steady in front of the microphone, as if it weren’t connected to the rest of his body. Seriously, with the dancing skills that man possesses, I don’t know how he stood still on a stage for all those years before The Night Sweats.

“We are only here because of you guys tonight, so thank you so much for coming. I never thought we’d be here with all of you, so this is a truly amazing thing for us.”

The Preservation Hall Jazz Band were excused after a few songs, leaving Rateliff and his matching brothers (most of whom wore denim jackets with ‘Intentional Dickweed’ embroidered across the back) to perform “The Intro”, “Howling at Nothing”, “Wasting Time”, and “Mellow Out”; all in pure Night Sweats style. The sky was clear and the air smelled of autumn, but the red lights upon the red rocks represented the heat radiating from the stage. No one was immune to the fever either. There wasn’t a single person questioning the name of the band at that point in the evening.

“In 1998 I moved here with my best friend, Joseph Pope III on bass, and we would come out here in the middle of the night. We were just a bunch of poor kids from nowhere. Well, Missouri actually, where all poor people come from. We sat on this stage and smoked a joint and drank some wine and told each other we’d play here someday. It’s nice to be here with you guys. And it’s nice to be here with my best friend too.”

In a time when so many artists are looking to the 80’s for inspiration, Rateliff and the Night Sweats are not the only band whose vision goes back a little further, but unlike Alabama Shakes and St. Paul & The Broken Bones, and even Shakey Graves, I don’t feel like I am watching a group of musicians paying homage to the 60’s; I feel like I am watching a band perform in the 60’s. It was partially the matching outfits; it was partially the lighting; it was partially the presentation and style of dancing and all the horns, but there was something more to it than that. There was an originality on display which should have been impossible for a retro band. Having seen Rateliff perform straight-up folk music so many times in the past, I had even more reason to be skeptical of his new stage personality, but if there was a façade to been seen through, my vision must be going in my old age, because everything during the 90-minute performance seemed 100% legit to me.

“We’ve been on tour for most of the past year. We never anticipated the album would do so well. Thank you for your support for our various bands and projects. It’s good to be here with all our neighbors.”

I’m going to forgo a detailed play-by-play of the show, but I will say they performed almost the entire album, with the only exception being “I’d Be Waiting”. They also performed live staples “The Intro” and “Out on the Weekend”, as well as a new song. We were given a dance lesson before “Shake” (“four corners…side to side…a little twist, try that”) and the band was loose, free flowing, but also in flawless form the entire night.

I can always appreciate a singer songwriter accompanying themselves on a guitar. I can sympathize with that, deeply because I’ve been a singer accompanying myself on a guitar for the last seven years, and it takes time, such does any music to penetrate that glass ceiling that you can see bands or artists that you would call your contemporaries, doing what they love, making a splash somewhere, somehow. But seriously, lets talk about Nathanniel Rateliff, a singer songwriter who has been doing what he does for a long time, with a vast discography behind him, but giving this guy a chance was a great decision. His music definitely speaks louder than words, and so do his songs, which are fantastically crafted. One of the ones that really stuck with me was “Early Spring Till”, which he performed accompanied by his nylon strung acoustic guitar and the belting vocals from Julie Davis, who is pretty much an unknown, but the marriage of their vocals together is just a force to be reckoned with. Their voices blend so well and you find yourself singing them for days afterwards.

Properly Ace.

What a vocalist, what a sweet venue and what a beard.

I would highly recommend seeing this dude.

I would not recommend trying to write a short review in Songkick though - its really annoying.

Really entertaining band! Great vocals and music was fun and upbeat. Nathaniel seems really passionate and everyone on stage was really into it. Would like to see them again next time they are in Calgary.

Amazing! Great performance, great vibes. Nathaniel and his band were really powerful and they transmitted a lot of good energy. I hope they release a new album soon and come back to Madrid.

Nathaniel Rateliff Announces Intimate Solo Tour Dates

Nathaniel Rateliff, the acclaimed singer-songwriter, is set to take the stage once again as he revives his intimate, “And It’s Still Alright Tour.” Joined by his friend and fellow singer-songwriter, Kevin Morby, on most dates, this 11-city cross-country journey promises to captivate audiences with its stripped-down and heartfelt performances.

The tour is scheduled throughout the month of November, following existing tour dates planned with his usual backing band, The Night Sweats.

I’m very excited to announce that I will finally be doing a tour to support my 2020 release of  ‘And It’s Still Alright ’. In 2020 we could not finish the tour we had planned. Presale happening now. General on sale Friday. Link in bio. Code: STILLALRIGHT pic.twitter.com/nsf4SWSp7z — Nathaniel Rateliff (@NRateliff) August 7, 2023

Insomniac browser for ticketing professionals

Rateliff had initially conceived a similar tour to celebrate his 2020 solo album, And It’s Still Alright . This album, a touching tribute to his late collaborator Richard Swift, was unfortunately derailed shortly after its launch in Minneapolis due to the emergence of the COVID-19 pandemic. Now, Rateliff is resolute in his determination to bring the essence of this album to life on stage, creating an atmosphere that resonates with his fans on a profound level.

The And It’s Still Alright Tour is an eclectic blend of solo acoustic renditions and Rateliff’s performances backed by a 10-piece folk ensemble, which even includes a mesmerizing string quartet. This musical configuration promises to deliver a diverse and captivating soundscape that complements Rateliff’s evocative storytelling and emotive vocals.

For eager fans, a presale event is currently in progress, offering the opportunity to secure tickets before the general public rush. The official ticket sale for the And It’s Still Alright Tour will commence on Friday, August 11 at 10 a.m. local time for each respective venue.

Kicking off on November 1 at the historic Orpheum Theatre in Boston, the tour is set to paint the nation with its emotional melodies. The journey continues with a much-anticipated concert at Brooklyn’s Kings Theatre, followed by a stop in the nation’s capital, Washington D.C., on November 3.

Nathaniel Rateliff & The Night Sweats Provide Musical Salvation in Milwaukee

Derek Smith

“We were howlin’ at the moon / We were shaking our hips / Danced until we flat out falling into bed.”  These lyrics from “Howling at Nothing,” a song from the band’s 2015 self-titled debut album, epitomize what it is like to attend a Nathaniel Rateliff & The Night Sweats concert.  It’s toe tappin’, earth quakin’, hip shakin’ music that captures your soul from the first note and won’t let go until the house lights are illuminated and every last bit of energy in your body is extinguished. The band’s recent show in Milwaukee was no different.

Jumping hard out of the gate with “Suffer Me, “Intro,” and “I Need Never Get Old,” you’d be forgiven for believing the crowd – much like Jake and Elwood Blues some forty plus years ago – was immediately praying for its own musical salvation after seeing the light of this amazing band. There may not have been any cartwheels down the aisles, but the opening numbers packed such a wallop that there was little else for the fans to exclaim to each other than “The band! The band!”

The remainder of the show was no different as the band – led by Rateliff and also consisting of Patrick Meese (drums), Mark Shusterman (keyboards), Luke Mossman (guitar), Joseph Pope III (bass), Jeff Dazey (saxophone), Andreas Wild (saxophone) and Daniel Hardaway (trumpet) – played a fabulous 90-minute set of 21 songs from each of their three albums as well as the  What If I  EP. They also performed “And It’s Still Alright” from Rateliff’s 2020 solo album of the same name, a cover of Springsteen’s “Dancing in the Dark,” and two new and as yet unreleased songs: the beautiful mid-tempo “Heartless” and the fiery “Time Makes Fools.”

It is seemingly impossible not to enjoy yourself at a Nathaniel Rateliff & The Night Sweats show.  For those that have yet to experience the band live, add it to your bucket list. You will surely be enlightened.

Nathaniel Rateliff’s Throwbacks Wear Well on ‘The Future’

By Jon Dolan

It’s been six years since Nathaniel Rateliff and the Night Sweats electrified The Tonight Show with their brawny rave-up “S.O.B.,” delivering a scorching performance that launched one of the more unlikely breakout stars of the viral-sensation era. Rateliff was a burly middle-aged guy from Colorado whom Jimmy Fallon had stumbled across via a YouTube clip, and the Nights Sweats’ rustic look suggested they might feel more at home hanging out at Big Pink in 1968. But the command of retro-soul they displayed on their self-titled 2015 debut and its 2018 follow-up, Tearing at the Seams , was undeniable, partly because Rateliff worked a little Leonard Cohen-style introspect into his Ray Charles-inscribed belting.

That mix of Sixties groove workouts and Seventies singer-songwriter truth-seeking pays off on their third album, The Future . The title track kicks off sounding like the Bob Dylan of Desire if he’d recorded that album at Muscle Shoals. Good-natured vamps like “Something Ain’t Right” and “Survivor” strive to find rays of hope in our garbage times, musically hulking out with swelling horns and deliberate, nuanced muscle, as if the Night Sweats are a gang of bar buddies patting Nathaniel on the back as he decides to man up and take on reality. “Gotta sing a lot of soul to know how to feel it,” he offers on “Something Ain’t Right,” an ode to the cathartic power of making music.

That’s a good theme for this band, who sound inspired even when they’re merely channeling influences. The Night Sweats often suggest a more wide-open, somewhat jam-band-y Rocky Mountain version of the Dap-Kings’ funk-soul attack, and you can imagine The Future appealing equally to fans of Dave Matthews and Amy Winehouse. Their lived-in versatility is always impressive — from the gale-force Van Morrison gusto of “Love Me Til I’m Gone,” to the Funk Brothers pulse that pushes “Love Don’t,” to the low-key Bill Withers-style romance of “Baby I Got Your Number.” Rateliff’s ability to go from conversational coffeehouse mutter to roadhouse bluster has a similar dynamic command, and it makes the music feel urgent even when his lyrics don’t rise above well-intentioned bromides; the heart-yanking gospel grandeur of “Face Down in the Moment” deserves something a little more specific than “every moment that you wait now is a moment slipped away,” and “I’m On Your Side” lands its search for solace on lines like “there’s a chance to see if we just open up our eyes.”

If Rateliff just saw himself as a history-loving belter riffling through received idioms, it wouldn’t really matter. But he’d clearly like to say something with his music, and the singer-songwriter side of his talent doesn’t always come into focus. Still, unlike plenty of guys in hats and beards who’d like to make meaning, he never sounds self-serious, pompous, or sanctimonious. He’s too generous for that, a crowd-pleaser at heart.

REVIEW: Nathaniel Rateliff “What If I”

Nathaniel Rateliff – What If I  (Fantasy Records)

Nathaniel Rateliff’s new EP What If I was released a few weeks back, produced by Bradley Cook (Bon Iver, Kevin Morby, The War on Drugs) and “R.M.B.,” which is Rateliff, Meese and James Barone (Beach House). Four of the five songs were initially written for his 2021 release The Future , with one song released on that album in another version, “What If I.”

This is quite a sweet treasure. Rateliff is delving ever more deeply into his place in the world of excellent and profound songwriters. This EP moves through new territory, blending a little bit of Beatles / Harry Nilsson pop with signature Rateliff richness, and lyrics that are thoroughly philosophical.

It starts out with “Buy My Round.” This is the new song. The title suggests that it may be a whimsical barroom song, but it is anything but.  It’s a little bit of a poppy Beatles-like song that adds layers of depth with Rateliff’s noteworthy vocals and horns.  But the lyrics are steeped in meditative realizations:  “when all the time we had is dust in the wind, if I had the opportunity to tell you what you mean to me, and all I could say is “I Am.”

“What If I (Cook Brothers version)” is a stripped down version of that song that previously appeared on The Future . On Bandcamp, Nathaniel explains it this way: “I gave it over to Bradley Cook and Phil Cook…Phil arranged the piano part he wrote around just my vocal and added a simple clap. Pat, Mark, and Luke Mossman (guitar) added some extra sounds to Phil’s arrangement while we were on the road, along with shaker and cabasa from Matt McCaughan.”

“That’s Your Opinion” is another easy, stripped down song, and even when the horns make their appearance it’s still nice and easy.  “I didn’t recognize myself or the way that I spoke / Got into a round with a friend / That once told me back, back when / You were a better man when you called your shit out.” A lot of reflection.

“Slow Pace of Time (featuring Charlie Gabriel)” is a shuffly jazzy number and again he takes it nice and slow. “I find it hard to just compare to / Yet you love me, you love me / That’s all that I had ever ask / But in time, you realize the violins have stopped playing at the bottle’s end.”  Charlie Gabriel on clarinet is a jazzy emphasis. Simple and true.

“Suffer Me” is the rockin’ Rateliff that we can always count on coming out from under the surface.  Catchy and layered and hornsy. “Can’t believe now ’cause they won’t let you be / And is there any love for me? / You seem to crowd and you bend at the knees / Is there any love for me?”

Nathaniel Rateliff is evolving with more and more depth with each release.  You can count on his lyrics to be meaningfully evocative and poetic. Check this one out, sit back and enjoy it.

Nathaniel Rateliff, My Morning Jacket to co-headline 2024 tour

W ith its swirl of soul, Americana and indie rock, Denver’s platinum-selling Nathaniel Rateliff and the Night Sweats has conquered international stages all on its own, following years of Rateliff’s dues-paying folkie career.

But the hard-working band is getting some help this year from My Morning Jacket — the similarly incendiary live act that mashes hard-driving guitars, wailing vocals and county twang into cosmically beautiful tunes. Both acts have sold out multi-night Red Rocks Amphitheatre stands on their own, but together, they promise a mighty draw.

The bands will co-headline a Sept. 10-28 road jaunt, called the Eye to Eye Tour, that finds them performing equal-length sets and switching the order for each concert, according to a press statement. .

“We are long-time lovers of My Morning Jacket and have grown a close friendship over the years,” Rateliff said in the statement. “It’s so special to become friends with musicians and peers that you admire, and we’re looking forward to bringing our love for each other on the road.”

“We were lucky enough to see Nathaniel and some of the Night Sweats at Preservation Hall in New Orleans some years ago — our minds were blown, our hearts were opened, and we got swept up in the joy of it all,” said Jim James, singer for My Morning Jacket, in the statement. “We are so happy to share the stage with these fine folks for a run full of peace, love, music, and fun!”

The un-fun part? There are currently no Colorado dates scheduled — or any west of the Mississippi River. Most are on the East Coast, with a couple in My Morning Jacket’s friendly territory of Nashville (the band hails from Louisville, Ken.).

Rateliff is currently planning shows at Denver’s Boettcher Concert Hall April 5-6 with the Colorado Symphony , a reprise of last year’s Imagination Artist series, but with a new program of orchestra-backed Leonard Cohen covers. Rateliff and the Night Sweats will follow that with a handful of North American dates, followed by the Night Sweats’ string of European dates and U.S. concerts, before joining with MMJ.

Tickets are on sale starting at 10 a.m. Friday, March 29, with a presale starting at 10 a.m. Tuesday, March 26. Check out nathanielrateliff.com/tour for more, and see the Night Sweats’ current list of 2024 live dates below.
