Website Accessibility Statement

Jambo! The San Diego Zoo Safari Park welcomes all guests. We have several services to help all our guests enjoy their visit.

We have a map that marks the stops for our ADA (American with Disabilities Act) shuttle. These maps are also available at our ticket booths and at Park Base. Restrooms and services—including many of our Safaris—are wheelchair accessible. Wheelchairs and motorized scooters are available for rent on a first-come, first-served basis near the entrance at Safari Outfitters.  Please refer to our Accessibility Guide for more information. The minimum age requirement to operate an Electric Conveyance Vehicle (ECV) is 16 years old.

Click here to download our Accessibility Map (PDF)

Guests who have difficulty standing in line at the Africa Tram may request an “Easy Access Pass” at the Tram Host podium, across from the Africa Tram ticket booth. The attendant on duty will provide a return time for the group based on the length of the line. Guests may continue exploring and return at their assigned boarding time. Up to four additional members of the guest’s party may accompany a guest with a disability.

We welcome guests with disabilities who choose to bring their trained service animal into the Safari Park. Emotional support animals as well as companion, comfort, or service animals in training are not allowed entry into the Safari Park. Our guidelines for service animals can be found by accessing the San Diego Zoo Safari Park Accessibility Guide.

Please see our Accessibility Guide (click the link at the top of this page) for Frequently Asked Questions and more detailed Safari Park information for guests with disabilities.

Mobility Assistive Device Policy

San Diego Zoo Wildlife Alliance is dedicated to providing all of its guests with equal enjoyment of the wonderful experience offered by its parks: the San Diego Zoo and the San Diego Zoo Safari Park.

The safety of our visitors is extremely important to us. The parks are primarily pedestrian environments. By “pedestrian,” we mean any individual who moves within walking areas with or without the use of walking-assistive devices such as crutches, leg braces, wheelchairs, etc. Park attendance is often at high capacity, resulting in busy pedestrian pathways. Our goal is to maintain a safe pedestrian traffic flow for all visitors while allowing for use of mobility-assistive devices that do not fundamentally alter the nature of the experience the parks provide.

In order to maintain a safe pedestrian environment and the desired pace and flow of visitor traffic, the parks do not allow guests to bring or use most wheeled vehicles within the grounds. Bicycles, tricycles, scooters, skateboards, roller skates, and similar modes of transportation are not allowed within the grounds. The parks allow strollers as well as the following mobility-assistive devices for use by guests with disabilities: wheelchairs, electric scooters, and Segways®. All Segways entering the parks must be operated in “turtle” mode so as not to disrupt the desired pace of the visitor traffic at the parks and disturb other guests.

The Safari Park provides accommodations to people who need mobility assistance while on our grounds. Shuttle service is available for guests with limited mobility and guests who use wheelchairs, running on a continuous loop stopping at Park Base and Okavango Outpost. The Park also offers a limited number of wheelchairs and electric scooters for rent. In addition, the Park provides free admission for a personal attendant/caregiver to accompany a guest who requires such help to access the Park's public programs, activities, and facilities.

San Diego Zoo Wildlife Alliance reserves the right to modify this policy at any time as it deems appropriate.

San Diego Zoo Parking

Last Updated on December 5, 2022 by Usama

One of the most visited U.S. zoos — the San Diego Zoo — is situated in Balboa Park and houses thousands of animals. It’s run by the San Diego Zoo Wildlife Alliance which offers an array of interesting exhibits. If you plan on visiting the zoo to see its diverse animal collection, our San Diego Zoo Parking Guide is going to help you get there! Find out ticket information and main public parking options, as well as a few tips and tricks to finding affordable car parking alternatives.

How Much Are Tickets to the San Diego Zoo?

The zoo is open between 9 AM and 6 PM every day. Due to health screening and social distancing protocols, the zoo must space guests who enter through the front gate. The average wait time to enter is 20–25 minutes, but it could be up to 1 hour on weekends and holidays.

Due to COVID-19, the San Diego Zoo implemented a reservation system that is required for entry. To enter the zoo, you need a ticket or membership and a reservation, while children younger than 3 years of age enter free of charge. See the list below for the price information.

Expired or unused purchased zoo tickets can be exchanged only for a 25% discount for the purchase of a current 1-Day Pass ticket. To use the San Diego Zoo discount promotion codes, use the online store’s shopping cart area . After making a reservation, you’ll receive a confirmation email and attached tickets from [email protected].

San Diego Zoo Discounts

The San Diego Zoo offers an array of discounts ; check them out below to see if you are eligible for one.

  • AAA members receive 10% off a 1-Day Pass (if they bring valid membership cards). The AAA discount is valid for up to 6 people.
  • Eligible airline and cruise line employees and one accompanying guest get a 10% discount off the 1-Day Pass. They must have a company-issued identification badge or CLIA card.
  • Groups of 15 or more receive a 10% discount off the 1-Day Pass.
  • Seniors age 65 and over get a 10% discount off the price of a San Diego Resident, Resident Premium, Wildlife Protector, and Wildlife Protector Premium membership.
  • Students receive a 10% discount off the price of a San Diego Resident, Resident Premium, Wildlife Protector, and Wildlife Protector Premium membership.
  • Travel agents and tour operators and one accompanying guest get a 10% discount off the 1-Day Pass; they must bring a valid IATA or IATAN card with a picture ID.

San Diego Zoo Parking Options

The San Diego Zoo is situated at 2920 Zoo Dr, San Diego, CA 92101 — see driving directions if you’re coming for the first time. As you can see on the San Diego Zoo map below, the official parking lot is situated in front of the zoo; it’s owned and operated by the City of San Diego . The San Diego Zoo parking entrance is off Park Blvd at Zoo Place.

san diego safari park parking membership

How Much is Parking at the San Diego Zoo?

When it comes to parking at the San Diego Zoo , there’s one great and unique benefit — the San Diego Zoo offers free parking ! Unlike other large zoos and venues, this one provides its guests with free parking spots available right in front of the zoo entrance. Since this is a very popular city destination, the San Diego Zoo parking area might get full during peak hours. If that happens, don’t worry; there are several other options nearby!

Inspiration Point Parking is on the east side of Park Boulevard (between Presidents Way and the Balboa Park Activity Center). It offers easy access to the zoo and Balboa Park via the free tram. Unlike the main parking structure, the lot on the south side of Inspiration Point has designated parking spaces for oversized vehicles. You can also use the parking areas by the Navy Hospital at the south end of Park Blvd. All the parking lots in and around Balboa Park are free to the public!

We suggest that you arrive about an hour before your scheduled tour so that you have enough time to park.

Additional parking information:

  • parking at the zoo is available on a first-come, first-served basis;
  • overnight parking isn’t allowed at the San Diego Zoo lot;
  • five electric vehicle charging stations are at the southeast part of the parking lot;
  • the zoo provides accessible parking spots, as well as free accessible shuttles.

San Diego Zoo Parking Alternatives

Drivers should have no worries about finding a convenient parking space at or near San Diego Zoo . Since there’s ample parking and the spots are free, the San Diego Zoo visitors usually don’t search for other off-site parking services. However, you might want to avoid parking altogether, and we can help you do that. Let’s take a look at public transportation options that can get you to the zoo and help you avoid the time-wasting search for a parking spot.

Transportation to the San Diego Zoo

Public transit in San Diego gives you a simple and low-cost way to travel and reach the San Diego Zoo . Rapid 215 and Route 7 stop at the zoo; both routes run to and from downtown and therefore are an easy connection from Amtrak and COASTER trains, as well as trolleys and other MTS bus lines. One-way fare is $2.50 for adults and $1.25 for seniors and people with disabilities. Also, there’s a special offer for families: on weekends, two children can ride MTS Bus or Trolley routes free of charge with a paid adult.

Bottom Line

Not only does the San Diego Zoo provide free parking , but the car parks in the area are also available at no cost! So, unlike the majority of zoos in the United States, such as the Bronx Zoo , the City of San Diego allows you to park free of charge. There’s only one negative to San Diego Zoo parking — it tends to get crowded on weekends, holidays, and during peak hours. For this reason, we highly recommend arriving at least an hour prior to your scheduled tour. Alternatively, you may use the affordable public transportation service to get to the zoo without hassle.

Flying out of San Diego International Airport ? Don’t forget to compare SAN parking rates, check shuttle times, and read customer reviews before booking a spot. Be sure to check out our discounted parking offers whenever you need a secure spot!

Amtrack Railway Service is a better option if you plan to visit a wildlife attraction from another city, such as Los Angeles.

At 43 km (27 miles), Oceanside Amtrak Station is the closest station to San Diego Safari Park.

From Oceanside, you must board the light rail service called Sprinter to get to Escondido.

After 53 minutes and 14 stops, you must get down at Escondido Transit Center .

From Escondido Transit Center, you can take a taxi.

If you wish to travel by car, turn on Google Maps and get started.

The San Diego Zoo Safari Park’s general parking costs US$20 per day.

Preferred parking (a spot closer to the Safari entrance) is US$18 extra, which means you pay US$38 for parking your vehicle.

Credit cards, debit cards, or cash are accepted.

There are numerous parking garages around the safari park.

San Diego Zoo Safari Park, including holidays, opens at 9 am throughout the year.

During the summer months of April to August, when the park gets lots of visitors, it closes at 7 pm, and the rest of the year, at 5 pm.

Visitors need at least four to five hours to explore San Diego Zoo Safari Park to satisfaction.

If you plan to explore the bare minimum – walk in, go on the Africa Tram at the Safari Park, and step out – you need around 90 minutes.

Some visitors wonder if they can shorten their visit by driving through the safari park.

Unfortunately, that’s impossible because San Diego Zoo Safari Park is a walk-through sanctuary.

Note: During peak summer months, the queue for the Tram ride can be long, leading to longer waits.

Visiting San Diego Zoo Safari Park

It is best to visit San Diego Zoo Safari Park when it opens at 9 am because the animals are most active during the first half of the day.

As the day gets hotter, animals tend to look for shade.

Heat can also affect your experience at the Safari Park, so a fair-weather day is recommended.

On Weekdays, expect the longest lines at San Diego Safari Park between 11 am and 1 pm; on weekends, it is between 11 am and 3 pm.

However, the crowd doesn’t affect your experience if you purchase your tickets in advance.

San Diego Safari Park is most crowded from June to August and during school vacations.

Best time of the year

The best time of the year to visit San Diego Zoo Safari Park is spring – from mid-March to mid-June. This is also known as the birthing season.

The park sets up nursery exhibits where you can see baby animals take their first steps into the wild.

Tourists on a budget holiday tend to compare San Diego Zoo and Safari Park and then decide where to go.

With four fantastic zoos, California State is a wildlife lover’s destination. Read about all the  Zoos in California .

All through the year, infants up to two years and active military professionals can enter the zoo for free.

Besides this, everybody must purchase a ticket.

Seniors free days

Adults 65 and older can visit San Diego Zoo Safari Park for free throughout February.

Kids free days

Free entry for kids to San-Diego Safari Park

In October, every child aged three to 11 years gets free admission to San Diego Safari Park as long as a paying adult accompanies them.

Only kids aged 12 and above need to purchase tickets this month.

The animals at San Diego Safari Park are divided into 11 primary areas, which you can walk around and explore.

You can interact with the wildlife at the Park in many exciting ways.

Africa Tram

The Africa Safari is a 30-minute guided tour on an open-air tram.

The tram takes a 4 km (2.5 miles) long route through San Diego Zoo Safari Park’s field habitats, and visitors get to wild animals such as giraffes, rhinos, elephants, antelopes, etc.

African Tram Safaris start from the African Outpost, a 20-minute walk from the attraction entrance.

The Tram trips start at 10 am and continue till 45 minutes before the park closes.

The African Tram Safari is free with the regular San Diego Safari Park ticket .

To avoid waiting in queue to board the safari tram, be at the African Outpost in San Diego Safari Park before 11 or after 3 pm.

At 11.45 am, the Tiger Keepers at San Diego Safari Park conduct a training session with the animals at the Sambutan Longhouse.

This keeper talk is a fantastic opportunity to meet the San Diego Safari Park’s tigers up close.

Since the talk is popular, plan to arrive at least 20 minutes early for the 15 minutes long Tiger Keeper Talk.

The majestic animal gets a brief physical visual examination by their caretakers and lots of treats.

Animal Ambassador Stage at Safari Park

The San Diego Safari Park Animal Ambassador Stage is an open platform for showcasing different animals.

Visitors get a chance to get within a couple of feet of animals that aren’t available in an exhibit.

The stage is at Safari Base Camp close to the park entrance, and there are two shows daily – first at noon and the last at 4 pm.

If you are lucky, you may interact with the massive python ‘Julius Squeezer,’ cheetah, Kestrel hawks, or the high-jumping servals and caracals.

At the Nairobi Station, visitors get close-up views of some of the smaller animals at San Diego Safari Park.

Don’t miss out on Robert, the safari’s interactive digital zebra.

The Animal Care Center houses the baby animals and is also at Nairobi Station.

Expect some waiting time when baby lions or cheetahs are cared for at the center.

Petting Kraal

Open from 10 am to 4.45 pm, the Petting Kraal is an excellent opportunity for your kids to interact with the Safari Park’s friendly goats.

Kids can feed the Pygmy, Nubian, and Boer goats and have fun.

At Lorikeet Landing, visitors can engage with a colorful rainbow of parrots from 10 am to 3.45 pm.

The entrance to the exhibition is free, but the nectar you feed the parrots is for sale.

A small bowl of nectar can get these parrots to land on you and make for beautiful, funny photographs.

At Lemur Walk, open from 9 am to the Safari Park’s closing time, visitors get to spend time with the Lemurs.

You walk along a path inside the habitat as ring-tailed lemurs hang around in the trees or walk with you.

Only visitors over five years of age are allowed.

The 20-minute Frequent Flyers Bird Show at San Diego Safari Park is scheduled twice daily – at 12 noon and 2 pm.

The exciting show is perfect for a quick break mid-way through exploring the park.

Visitors see exotic birds like owls, parrots, and large vultures flying just inches above your head.

The Training Talk happens in the amphitheater between Gorilla Forest and African Woods.

It is an opportunity to get a closer look at free-flight bird training as the birds prepare for the famous Frequent Flyers show.

Most people ignore this show, which means you can get the front seat row.

Shiley’s Cheetah Run

San Diego Zoo Safari Park’s Cheetah Run is held once a day, at 3.30 pm.

You see an agile Cheetah run down a 100-meter (330-foot) long track and reach its top speed of nearly 112 km (70 miles) per hour.

It is better to be at the spot 15 minutes earlier because it is a massive hit with visitors.

Cheetah Run is different from Cheetah Safari. Read up on the other safaris at San Diego Safari Park .

Safari Park Gardens

If you love greenery, check out Safari Park’s World Gardens, which has thousands of plants representing geographical areas worldwide.

Our favorite gardens are Baja Garden, Old World Succulent Garden, Epiphyllum Trail, Bonsai Pavilion, and California Nativescapes Garden.

Conservation Carousel

Conservation Carousel at San Diego Safari Park

The Conservation Carousel is at the Safari Base Camp and costs US$6 per person for an all-day bracelet.

It is a good entertainment option for kids, with 60 reproductions of rare or endangered animals that rotate around an axis.

Kids can choose their favorite animals, such as giraffes, rhinos, zebras, cheetahs, etc., to ride on.

It is open from 10 am until the Safari Park closes.

San Diego Zoo Safari Park is very kid-friendly, and more than half of the visitors on any given day are children.

Besides the animal exhibits, which are always a hit, many activities and experiences are designed for children.

Village Playground

Village Playground at San Diego Safari Park

The Village Playground is designed like an African village, next to the Petting Kraal in Nairobi Village.

The interactive play area is open from 9 am onwards.

Savanna Cool Zone

Savanna Cool Zone at San Diego Safari Park

Located in the Lion Camp, this is an excellent way for your family to beat the heat.

The kids can have a wet and wild time even as you relax in the shade with snacks.

Kids love the play statues shaped like lions and tortoises with water squirting from their heads.

Samburu Jungle Gym

Samburu Jungle Gym

This is a hit for kids and adults, located below the Benbough Amphitheater in the African Woods.

Children love climbing up and exploring in this safari-themed play area, even as the parents put their feet up in the shade at Samburu Terrace and keep an eye on them.

Tiger Trail Play Area

Tiger Trail Play Area

Also known as the Camp Play area, this spot is part of the lush wooded landscape of Tiger Trail.

Children love climbing, sliding, and running on tree trunks in a simulated logging camp.

Besides this, kids also love Petting Kraal and Conservation Carousel, which are paid activities.

Stroller Rentals for kids: San Diego Zoo Safari Park offers strollers for rent on a first-come, first-serve basis. The daily charge for a single stroller is US$16, and a double stroller is US$20.

Because of some odd zoning rules, the Safari Park is in San Diego, referred to as the San Diego Safari Park.

However, Safari Park’s geographical location is Escondido.

Escondido is around 32 km (20 miles) inland and usually 5 to 7 degrees Celcius (10 to 14 Fahrenheit) warmer than oceanfront San Diego.

Temperatures at San Diego Safari Park

Since the Safari Park is an outdoor attraction, it makes sense to dress up in layers during your visit.

The weather gets warmer as the day progresses.

With more than 2500 animals to see, a San Diego Safari Park map is helpful.

Besides the animal enclosures, a map helps you identify visitor services such as viewing points, petting areas, restaurants, restrooms, etc.

Keeping the San Diego Zoo Safari Park’s layout handy is highly recommended if you are visiting with kids because you won’t waste time looking for the exhibits and, in the process, get exhausted.

You can also download the GPS-enabled San Diego Zoo app from the Android or iOS store .

AAA is a loosely associated group of clubs that each cover a small geographical area, usually a single state or portion of a state. Different clubs have different offers, so it’s worth checking both your own AAA state club and the Southern California AAA club websites. To check your own state club, just go to AAA.com and you will be redirected (usually) to your local club. If you haven’t yet set up your online access, you’ll sometimes need to do that to see your local club’s discounts.

To check the Southern California site, use this link and enter zip code 92112. Once you get to the club home page, select the “Discounts & Rewards” tab and then select “Theme parks & attractions.” If a particular discount on the Southern California site involves booking online through the club site, you will usually need to be a Southern California member. Discounts that involve showing your card at the gate are available to any AAA member. If you can get to a Southern California AAA club office, you can usually take advantage of offers that must be bought in person, even if you’re a member of a different AAA club.

AAA members get 10% off a 1-Day Pass, and sometimes discounts on other things such as food or merchandise.

Costco.com sometimes offers a very good discount on San Diego Zoo tickets and you don’t have to be a Costco member to buy through their site. (Non-members pay a 5% surcharge, however.) There is a shipping charge when ordering from Costco.com.

Seniors (65 and older) get 15% off a 1-Day Pass. Available at the ticket booth only (not in advance).

Airline / Cruise Line Employee Ticket Discounts

Looking for a place to stay near the San Diego Zoo ? Choices are plentiful in the San Diego area near the San Diego Zoo, and getting around San Diego is fairly easy by car. If you don’t have a place in mind, we suggest checking out the hotels below. Our recommendations are not the cheapest places you can find– there are plenty of those out there– but we feel they offer a very good value for your dollar. As with our Preferred Hotels for Walt Disney World (Florida) , we suggest accommodations that will enhance your stay while not breaking the bank. That said, if you are used to Orlando area pricing, you will be in for some sticker shock. Low rates for decent but average hotels start at around $80-$120/night, mid-range hotels start at around $120 and can run upwards to $275/night or higher in peak seasons.

The San Diego Zoo is located at 2920 Zoo Drive in Balboa Park, just north of downtown San Diego. Zip code is 92101.

If you don’t know where to start, we suggest checking out:

  • Hilton Garden Inn Downtown – easy walking distance to the Zoo and one block from the bay, new property with interior courtyards and heated rooftop pool. Note: self parking is not available – valet only.
  • Best Western Cabrillo Garden Inn – Good value option if you are on a tight budget. Great location, exterior corridor style hotel, includes free continental breakfast.

For example, Hilton owns DoubleTree, Embassy Suites, Waldorf Astoria, etc. Here are links to the overall parent company websites where you can search their whole portfolio– use Balboa Park, San Diego, California to find hotels closest to the San Diego Zoo:

  • Hilton Hotels (DoubleTree, Embassy Suites, Hampton, Homewood Suites)
