Had a awesome time in lan ha bay cruise on the cozy boutique boat. The staff were super helpful the food was awesome and it went really smoothly from the pick you to the drop off everything was planned nicely.
David aka Nam is a very helpful and nice guide, always looking for best solutions. Fluent in English, he has a great knowledge and understanding of his country. Responsive and transparent, he made our trip to Cat Ba Bay a successful story, all in line with our expectations and agreements
I contacted Hanoi Eco Tour due to my interest in visiting a rice farm while in Northern Vietnam. Ultimately, David led us on private tours of the Old Quarter in Hanoi, Toan’s Rice Farm outside of Hanoi, and Ninh Binh. He also arranged a private tour of the Ben Tre area of Saigon for after we left Northern Vietnam. He customized everything to cater to our interests and jet-lagged states. David was responsive in communications with us through WhatsApp prior to, during and after our visit to Hanoi. The result was a well-orchestrated yet flexible three full days in Northern Vietnam with no surprises, reduced stress and wonderful memories. The Rice Farm Tour was a highlight of our vacation. Wearing provided protective gear, we braved the hot and rainy weather to help transplant rice plants into the wet rice fields. Afterwards, we returned to Toan’s farm home, showered and were privileged to have one of our favorite meals in Vietnam. We experienced how rice farmers relax after working hard in the fields with a high-tech massage chair which rubbed and soothed from head to toe. The visit ended with a motorbike tour of the countryside to see all the local animals and trees and how life is in the countryside. David was very helpful in 1) answering questions that I was stumped by prior to arriving in Vietnam, 2) solving problems that arose during our visit, and 3) providing good luck with the weather. He helped us get the most appropriate phone plan for our needs. Also, he worked hard at trying to fit in a trip to Sapa during our stay, which we didn’t have enough time for. He pointed out options that I hadn’t thought of or was aware of. Vietnam was a tricky trip to plan due to 1) my being a non-native as well as 2) there being limited fresh info due to the country only recently opening back up post-Covid. For both those reasons and more, I recommend David as your guide while visiting Northern Vietnam and beyond. He will take care of you. Special thanks to David for his hard work, personable demeanor and optimistic spirit, and to Toan and her family for their hospitality in their home!
We had a lovely morning with a Vietnamese family in their home. They gave us a warm welcome into their home with tea and cookies. We helped prepare spring rolls and then all sat down for lunch with some local delicacies. Also had chicken, beef and noodles. We then walked to the local temple and drank tea with the local care takers of the temple. Lovely family and they made us feel welcome.

7 Most Sustainable Eco Lodges in Vietnam
- By Emese Maczko
- May 29, 2023 November 7, 2023
Vietnam is a beautiful country full of world heritage sites, scenic tea plantations, pristine beaches, and lush rainforests.
It’s also a popular holiday destination, and for this reason, you’ll find a variety of eco-lodges scattered throughout the country. This ranges from small jungle lodges in the rainforest to large eco-lodges situated on the coastline. Whatever you’re after, you’re guaranteed to find it in this incredible country.
If you’re looking for unique places to stay in Vietnam, then here are the eco-lodges you need to check out!
What are eco-lodges?
Eco-lodges are accommodations in undisturbed, remote natural areas where both construction and operation have the lowest impact possible on the environment. They are not only part of the local community, but they are active participants in protecting nature and culturally sensitive areas.
Topas Lodge
Topas Lodge is located within Hoang Lien National Park, and sustainability is at the forefront of its policies. The lodge relies primarily on hydropower to operate and uses energy-efficient lightbulbs. Food leftovers are outsourced to the local community and farmers to use, and they have a glass crushing machine to recycle all their glass bottles into sand. This can then later be used in construction.
Topas Lodge is situated on top of a hilltop, so naturally boasts spectacular views of the nearby area. It’s the perfect place to stay if you love nature and are looking for a relaxing getaway. There are also plenty of great facilities at the eco-lodge, including an infinity pool with a pool bar, the Stilt House Restaurant, and the Pavilion BBQ.
Mai Chau Eco Lodge
Mai Chau Ecolodge prioritizes sustainability and responsible tourism. Over 80% of the land at the property is open space, and many of the building materials used were local and sustainable. The eco-lodge also focuses on clean energy, harmless wastewater disposal, and eco-friendly cleaning products. Not only that, but the eco-lodge also plays a big part in the community, as 90% of the staff are from local villages, and local businesses are used to source materials.
Mai Chau Lodge is located in the scenic village of Na Phon and is made up of 43 rooms. There are plenty of facilities on-site, including a restaurant, a spa, a swimming pool, and the Panorama bar, which offers scenic views of the surrounding mountains. The eco-lodge also offers a variety of activities, including traditional dances, hiking, and cycling.
Can Tho Eco Lodge
Can Tho Eco Lodge is located within the city of Can Tho; right along the Mekong River.
The lodge is run on solar energy, natural water, biomass energy, and then any by-products are recycled. Not only are sustainable materials used in construction, but this eco-lodge also supports local businesses and hires local people whenever possible. Can Tho Eco Lodge has a big focus on responsible tourism and cultural preservation, and shows this by focusing on local cuisine, and traditions of the Mekong Delta.
Can Tho Eco Lodge has three types of rooms available, and many of them offer panoramic views of the river. You’ll also find lots of facilities at the eco-lodge, including an on-site restaurant, a pool, and a luxurious spa. They also host private workshops, cooking classes, and a tour of the floating market.
Mango Bay Resort
Mango Bay Resort works incredibly hard to be sustainable and has plenty of great measures in place. Over 80% of its staff are from the local community, and they use local suppliers for over 85% of its supplies. They also use energy-efficient appliances, natural air circulation instead of air conditioning, and solar power to heat the water. Not only that, but the toilets are low water use, and the resort works to restore the environment by planting trees and working on reef rehabilitation.
Mango Bay Resort is situated on the beautiful island of Phu Quoc. There are plenty of accommodation options on-site, including veranda rooms, bungalows, villas, and the reef house. However, that’s not the best part about this place! This eco-resort has a wide variety of activities available, including yoga, cooking classes, beach activities, and island tours.
Six Senses Ninh Van Bay
Six Senses Ninh Van Bay is fully committed to reducing its carbon footprint and the impact it has on the local environment. In recent years, the resort has collected over 4,000 kg of rubbish from local beaches and given away over 500 reusable bags to the local community. They also have an organic garden, and the ingredients are used in the on-site restaurant. Not only that, but the resort produces renewable energy through its solar hot water system.
It is located on Vietnam’s Ninh Van Bay and offers scenic views of the East Vietnam Sea. The eco-resort offers a variety of private villas, and many of them come with a private pool, a sun terrace, and a guest experience maker who’s there to help you make the most out of your stay.
Ninila Fruit Farm Bungalow
All the bungalows at Ninila are designed in a traditional style so that they fit into the environment and don’t require many building resources. The water on-site is heated by solar power, and there are organic farmhouse dishes available for guests when it comes to dining.
If you’re looking for an eco-friendly escape, then Ninila Fruit Farm Bungalow is a perfect choice. Located in the forest, it’s in a great area as it’s just a 15-minute walk to one of Phu Quoc’s beautiful beaches. There is also a spa on-site, and the eco-lodge is partnered with companies that can take you on cruises and tours around the island. Bicycles are also free to hire, and you’ll find other facilities on-site including, a swimming pool, BBQ, and hammocks.
Cat Tien Jungle Lodge
Cat Tien Jungle Lodge is located right next to Cat Tien National Park. Not only is Cat Tien Jungle Lodge in the perfect location for nature lovers, but it’s a great place to stay for an adventure. They offer trekking tours through the national park for a great price, where you’ve got a good chance of spotting local wildlife.

An Amazing Hoi An Eco Friendly Day Tour
This day spent with our guide and owner; Mr. Hoang, was truly the highlight for both of us, while on our 3 week tour up the coast of Vietnam.
Sure we had some great experiences along the way, such as a wonderful {🛵 Scooter Food Tour Experience} in Ho Chi Minh City with some great local University Students, but to spend a day with the locals, to experience and learn about rice farming and fishing on the river, was incredible!
🚲 Biking at a leisurely pace, stopping many times to point out things as you go along, making it a perfect eco-friendly adventure, suitable for most everyone!
Eco Tourism From Fishermen To Rice Farming
Cycling in the Countryside of Hoi An
Mr. Hoang’s {Hoi An Eco Tourism Business} is strictly local and he, along with family members who own a local 🌾 rice farm in Cam Thanh village, is very enthusiastic and eager to show visitors his home and way of life on their farm.
They still grow 🌾 rice on their farm today, as many do to feed their families throughout the year.
“The main purpose of Hoi An Ecotourism is to provide our guest with the opportunity to experience firsthand the authentic daily lives of the local fishing and farming communities in Cam Thanh village of Hoi An City.”
A Brief History Of Historic Hoi An Vietnam
Ancient Bridge in Old Town Hoi An
Ancient Hoi An (Old Town) dates back over 2000 years of cultural history, having been a major port for the – Cham Kingdom, controlling the spice trade from the 10 th to the 17 th Century. In later years, it became a major international port.
Many of the structures show a special mixture of both; local and foreign inspirations.

It’s still an exciting experience to 🚶 walk the old streets, cross a bridge thousands of year’s old, shop and enjoy the many dining options here. Street vendor food stalls and restaurants are numerous for tourists to enjoy in; Old Town.
The evening hours are a particularly exciting time and should not to be missed!

Cycling The Hoi An Countryside
Our Hoi An Eco Tourism Tour Adventure
Biking along Rice Fields
Our tour began bright and early in the morning, with Mr Hoang meeting us at our hotel for a 7:30 pickup. A good thing, because South Vietnam is; 🥵 Hot!!!
From the hotel, we hopped on our 🚴 bikes and made our way through town to the nearby countryside and rice fields. We stopped many times for 📸 pictures, with Mr. Hoang explaining what the workers in the 🌾 rice fields were doing.
Slowly biking on paths between the fields in a peaceful and quiet setting, we arrived at his home on the farm nearby.
Rice Farming & Cooking
Hoi An Eco Tourism
Dressed and Ready to Go Rice Farming!
Here, we would be given a hands on demonstration of real authentic rice farming and cultivating.
From getting down and dirty plowing a rice paddy behind their 🐃 water buffalo, to actually planting 🌾 rice plants for farming, it makes you realize how hard these people work each and every day in order to feed their families.
Getting Up Close and Personal With Our Water Buffalo!
A very strong animal and devoted to its owner, it is taught basic commands for; turns, stopping and starting and will only listen to its owner!
Smoothing Out The Field For Planting Rice
Trust me, this is very hard work and I can’t imaging having to do this labor intensive work – all day long! 🙁
Moving Water from Field to Field with a Bamboo Basket
Above, is how farmers traditionally moved water from field to field using a 🎍 bamboo basket. This method is still used among Vietnamese farmers, who do not have access to water pumps and more modern farming equipment.
Inserting Rice Plants Into The Prepared Ride Paddy
Once the soil is prepared and ready for planting, farmers then painstakingly plant individual 🌾 rice plants by hand, into the wet muddy soil.
Enjoy A Fun Cooking Class – Hoi An Eco Tourism
Having Fun Cooking A Rice Pancake!
After demonstrating how rice was once cultivated and made ready for eating, we enjoyed a small cooking class, preparing delicious; rice pancakes.
This was a lovely surprise we did not expect, to enjoy a wonderful lunch outdoors on his private patio in the countryside!
From Farming To Fishing – Hoi An Eco Tourism
Bikes Loaded Onto Our Private Boat
Bundles of Bamboo shown in the 📸 picture above are soaked for days, making them stronger then ever for multi uses in Vietnam!
Once we arrived at the river, we loaded our bikes on to a river boat to head out and try our luck at – net fishing!
Getting Ready to Board Our Tiny River Fish Boat
Stopping in the middle of the river and boarding a narrow fish boat with a lovely elderly couple, showing their amazing skills on the water, they showed us the art of and skill of net fishing.
They then had us hop in their small boat and give it a try. Great fun had by all! 😎
Giving it a try! 🙂
I was so impressed with these two elders and watching how easy it seemed to them, after years of fishing this way. She manages the boat in the strong waves and current, while he does the fishing.
Hopping into a Traditional Vietnamese Round Boat
We then made our way to a small canal in the countryside, where we boarded a traditional small round fish boat. Here we had a great time paddling and making our way along the – 🎍 bamboo laced canal.
It was like taking a small boat ride at; Disneyland, complete with singing and laughter thrown in for good measure!
Making our way along the River Canals in our Round Boats
After a short time on the water, enjoying the scenery and fresh cool river air, we made our way back to shore and continued our 🚴 bike journey. We slowly made our way back to the hotel by mid-afternoon.
What an amazing day and experience with Mr. Hoang, graciously inviting us to his home, demonstrating his knowledge of rice farming and so much more!
Enjoying the Scenery Along the River Banks
This truly is a wonderful {Eco-Adventure Day Tour Experience} that the whole family will enjoy and simply {Must Not Be Missed}, when visiting this historic destination in Vietnam.
