the lights journey

Journey is an American rock band formed in 1973 in San Francisco by former members of Santana and Frumious Bandersnatch. The band has gone through several phases; its strongest commercial success occurred between 1978 and 1987, after which it temporarily disbanded. During that period, the band released a series of hit songs, including 1981's "Don't Stop Believin'", which became in 2009 the top-selling catalog track in iTunes history. Its parent studio album, Escape, the band's eighth and most successful, reached No. 1 on the Billboard 200 and yielded another of their most popular singles, "Open Arms". Its 1983 follow-up, Frontiers, was almost as successful in the United States, reaching No. 2 and spawning several successful singles; it broadened the band's ap… more »

Journey's best.

go ahead. argue.

and, yes, it is about San Fran, but I'd like to think it's about my home town, sea-town.

and computwiz - Journey is not a singer. journey is a band. Steve Perry is a singer. for a band. called journey. shoots

I used to listen to this song every mourning on the ride to my daycare. And to me it's about Seattle. Thats my city, but now it had a greater meaning when I was all the way out in butt fucking Iraq fight a war. I come back in August 2003. Hey friends does that give a good enough instight for a great song.

This is a great song...one of my favorites. Joyrney is a good band. And with regards to that Los Angeles comment...I, too, must laugh. Everybody knows that San Francisco is the city by the bay.

@zacster He said it's definitely about LA but had to change the name when he got called to join the band. He wrote this song before he joined Journey

hollywoodreporter.com/news/journeys-steve-perry-joins-eels-711540

actually, compuwiz is kinda right...Steve Perry originally wrote this song about LA, then had to change it when he joined Journey to make it about San Fran cuz that's where the rest of Journey was from...i got your back compuwiz!!

hell yeah CT man. I have great memories of hearing this song on the radio while driving up I-91 throught hartford. Not a city by the bay in any means, but its still a good feeling.

YES THIS SONG IS ABOUT SAN FRANSICO, NOT LOS ANGELES! A really great memory I have of this song is when I was a kid me and my family flew to San Fransico. It was at like 2:00 in the morning when the plane was about the hit the runway, and they played this song during the landing process. Since the airport is right in the bay, MAN the sight of the Golden Gate Bridge lit up with this song playing was so beatuiful, and at the same time so emontional. Passengers were crying, it definatley is something I will remember for ever. This song always cheers me up because it makes me think of that time. Steve Perry has a powerful, and heart touching voice.

This would be a great story, if you could actually see the GG bridge from the Airport!

The fact that one single radio standard Journey song could incite such heated debate is a major source of entertainment for me at this moment.

Sure, I am easily amused. Just as Compuwiz19 is positively weird. Whats next? The assertion by FaRvELvR1992 that its about green bay? Oh, wait. wouldnt want to give anyone any ideas...

Probably my favorite Journey song (just an inch above Separate Ways).

I always love thinking about how with a few judicious changes to the lyrics, it could really be a song about wanting to go home to any city. Yeah, I know it's about San Francisco, but it's nice to imagine it could be about Tampa, New York City, or even Hell, Michigan if one felt like it. That's how universal the sensibility it invokes is.

Even though this is about San Francisco, it was written in Los Angeles, where the band had relocated. Steve Perry explained in an interview with Joe Benson of Arrow 93.1 FM: "I had the song written in Los Angeles almost completely except for the bridge and it was written about Los Angeles. It was 'when the lights go down in the city and the sun shines on LA.' I didn't like the way it sounded at the time. And so I just had it sitting back in the corner. Then life changed my plans once again, and I was now facing joining Journey. I love San Francisco, the bay and the whole thing. 'The bay' fit so nice, 'When the lights go down in the city and the sun shines on the bay.' It was one of those early morning going across the bridge things when the sun was coming up and the lights were going down. It was perfect."

'City by the Bay' IS synonymous with San Francisco(Bay Area) and that's where Steve is from but this song can be interpreted as anyone's 'city by the bay'.

Welcome to today's podcast episode, where we delve into the crucial topic of children and self-esteem. As parents, our instinct may often lead us to want to shield our children from challenges and solve their problems for them out of love and concern. However, what may seem like acts of kindness can inadvertently hinder their development of self-esteem and resilience. It's important for parents to strike a balance between offering support and allowing their children to navigate challenges independently. Overprotecting or doing too much for our children can inadvertently send the message that we don't believe in their abilities or trust them to handle difficulties on their own. Instead, presenting them with opportunities to problem-solve and overcome obstacles can empower them to develop confidence and self-reliance.

From Shadows to Light: a Journey through Child Labor Reform in the Progressive Era

This essay about the Progressive Era’s fight against child labor explores the transformative period of social reform in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. It delves into the grim reality of child labor practices, highlighting the exploitation of young workers in hazardous conditions. Through legislative efforts, grassroots activism, and the work of reformers like Lewis Hine, significant strides were made in addressing this issue. The essay examines key legislation, such as the Keating-Owen Act of 1916, and discusses the ongoing challenges faced in enforcing labor laws amidst economic upheaval. Ultimately, it underscores the enduring legacy of the Progressive Era’s crusade for the rights and welfare of children in the workforce.

How it works

In the annals of American history, the Progressive Era stands as a beacon of societal transformation and reform. This pivotal period, spanning the late 19th and early 20th centuries, witnessed a groundswell of activism and advocacy aimed at addressing the myriad social injustices plaguing the nation. At the heart of this movement lay the issue of child labor, a pervasive and deeply entrenched practice that cast a shadow over the promise of progress and prosperity. However, through a convergence of social consciousness, political will, and grassroots mobilization, the Progressive Era ushered in a new dawn for the rights and welfare of young workers.

Before the dawn of the Progressive Era, the landscape of American industry was marred by the grim specter of child labor. In factories, mines, and sweatshops across the nation, children toiled away under grueling conditions, their innocence sacrificed at the altar of profit and exploitation. The sight of young boys and girls, barely old enough to tie their own shoes, laboring in dangerous and dehumanizing environments, served as a stark reminder of the moral bankruptcy of unchecked capitalism. Yet, for decades, the cries of these young voices fell on deaf ears, drowned out by the clamor of industry and the indifference of policymakers.

Enter the champions of progress, the torchbearers of reform who dared to challenge the status quo and demand justice for the most vulnerable members of society. Armed with nothing but their convictions and a burning sense of righteous indignation, these reformers embarked on a crusade to dismantle the machinery of child labor and forge a more equitable future for all. Among their ranks stood individuals such as Lewis Hine, a photographer whose haunting images of child laborers captured the attention of the nation and galvanized support for legislative action. Through his lens, the faces of innocence lost stared defiantly into the abyss, demanding recognition and redress.

Central to the push for child labor reform was the passage of legislation aimed at curbing the worst excesses of industrial exploitation. In 1916, Congress enacted the Keating-Owen Act, a landmark piece of legislation that sought to regulate child labor by prohibiting the interstate shipment of goods produced by underage workers. This bold move represented a seismic shift in the federal government’s approach to labor regulation, signaling a newfound recognition of the need to protect the rights and dignity of America’s youth. Yet, as with any sweeping reform effort, the road to progress was fraught with obstacles and setbacks.

Despite the gains made during the Progressive Era, the fight against child labor was far from over. The entrenched interests of powerful corporations, coupled with the economic upheaval wrought by World War I and the Great Depression, posed formidable challenges to reformers seeking to enforce existing laws and enact further protections for young workers. Moreover, the issue of child labor intersected with broader debates surrounding immigration, urbanization, and the role of government in regulating the economy, adding layers of complexity to an already contentious issue.

In the end, the legacy of the Progressive Era’s crusade against child labor endures as a testament to the power of collective action and the resilience of the human spirit. Though the shadows of exploitation may linger, they are gradually being dispelled by the light of progress and compassion. As we reflect on this pivotal moment in our nation’s history, let us draw inspiration from the courage and conviction of those who dared to imagine a world where every child is free to pursue their dreams without fear or exploitation. For it is only by confronting the injustices of the past that we can truly build a brighter future for generations to come.

Neuralink Gets FDA Green Light for Second Patient, as First Describes His Emotional Journey

T he U.S. Food and Drug Administration gave a green light to Elon Musk’s Neuralink to implant its brain chip in a second person, signing off on the company’s proposed fixes for a problem that occurred in the first test participant.

The fixes include embedding some of the device’s ultrathin wires deeper into the brain, according to a person familiar with the company and a document viewed by The Wall Street Journal.

As Neuralink prepares for its second test participant, the first, Noland Arbaugh, is opening up about the impact of the device on his life and the emotional roller coaster he experienced before, during and after the device lost part of its functionality.

In the days after his January implantation, Arbaugh used the Neuralink implant to control a cursor on a computer screen with only his thoughts. A quadriplegic with no movement below his shoulders for the past eight years, Arbaugh suddenly was able to communicate with friends, play games and interact with his world in ways that hadn’t seemed possible after his accident.

But a month after his surgery, he noticed the device was no longer working as well. Most of the threads implanted in his brain had come loose and were no longer reading the electrical signals needed to translate his thoughts into cursor movements.

“I was on such a high and then to be brought down that low. It was very, very hard,” Arbaugh said in an interview. “I cried.”

Neuralink’s N1 implant is a container about the size of a U.S. quarter that holds electronics and a battery. Its 64 external threads, each thinner than a human hair, are inserted into the brain’s motor cortex to relay neural signals.

Arbaugh said that Neuralink has told him around 15% of the threads inserted in his brain remain in place. But these have stabilized, he said, and software changes made by the company later helped him regain many of the device’s capabilities, which he has since demonstrated in livestreams.

Since such a device had never been implanted in a human before, Neuralink didn’t know how much the brain would move inside the skull, said Arbaugh. It found that his brain moved up to three times what the company expected, he said.

To keep threads in place, one of Neuralink’s proposed solutions that the FDA has signed off on is to implant them eight millimeters into the brain’s motor cortex, compared with about three-to-five millimeters for Arbaugh.

With the FDA’s blessing, Neuralink now hopes to implant a second participant some time in June, according to the person familiar with the company, who said that more than 1,000 quadriplegics have signed up for its patient registry, though fewer than 100 qualify for the study.

And while some of those people are eligible, Musk posted on X on Thursday that the company is still accepting applications.

Neuralink aims to implant 10 people with its device this year and hopes to have a diverse set of recipients in order to study a variety of behaviors. One challenge is that the people signing up to its patient registry skew white and male, the person said.

Neuralink hopes to submit applications to regulators in Canada and Britain in coming months to start similar trials in those countries, the person said. Its patient registry is open for Canada and will be opening for Britain in the coming days.

When Arbaugh learned why his implant had stopped responding to his thoughts, he said, he asked if it could be removed and fixed, or possibly replaced. A team that included three Neuralink staff had just broken the news to him in his hotel a mile from Neuralink’s California headquarters, which he was scheduled to tour after driving up from Arizona with his family. Arbaugh’s medical team said they didn’t want to do another brain surgery and preferred to wait for more information, he recalled.

“I thought that I had just gotten to, you know, scratch the surface of this amazing technology, and then it was all going to be taken away,” he said. “But it only took me a few days to really recover from that and realize that everything I’ve done up to that point was going to benefit everyone who came after me.”

A few weeks after disclosing the problem to Arbaugh, Neuralink was still trying to figure out exactly what had happened. But Arbaugh described in the interview how the company’s engineers improved the performance of his own device, altering how it decoded his brain signals.

It concentrated on clumps of neurons providing a strong signal and switched off many of the electrodes receiving weaker or no signals. In a blog post earlier this month, the company said it modified its recording algorithm “to be more sensitive to neural population signals.”

That improved things to the point that Arbaugh said he has now surpassed the capabilities he’d had before the threads retracted. “It makes me very, very hopeful for the future,” he added in the interview. “It seems like we’ve learned a lot and it seems like things are going in the right direction.”

Light plane appears to only just make Sydney taxiway as it narrowly avoids trees and rooftops

A light plane has made a dramatic emergency landing in Sydney's south-west, appearing to bank low over houses outside the airport and at one point narrowly avoiding the tops of trees.

Two people walked away unscathed after the emergency landing at Sydney's Bankstown Airport Sunday afternoon.

Aerial footage appears to show the Cessna 210 just miss the roof of a building at the end of the runway.

The plane then skids across a taxiway before tipping onto its wing on the grass just before 2pm.

a light plane crashes on the tarmac after an emergency landing at bankstown airport

The male pilot and a female passenger can be seen leaving the plane on foot within seconds of the landing, as others raced across the taxiway to meet them.

In a radio call to the airport, the pilot can be heard yelling out "Mayday, mayday" and "engine problem".

"All runways will be available, track as required," a tower controller responds.

A spokesperson for New South Wales Ambulance said three units attended the scene but there were no injuries.

Two Fire and Rescue NSW trucks also attended to inspect for petrol spills but rendered the area safe.

A spokesperson for the Australian Transport Safety Bureau (ATSB) said the forced landing was due to the aircraft losing power.

"The ATSB is gathering further information, including a report from the pilot, before making a decision on whether to investigate," the spokesperson said in a statement.

NSW Police set up a crime scene and are investigating the cause of the crash.

Two South Asian Women Directors in Cannes’ Official Selection Is a Miracle: Payal Kapadia and Sandhya Suri on Their Groundbreaking Films

It’s been 30 years since a film from India has been selected in the main competition at Cannes , but that finally changed this year.

Many were ecstatic last month when “ All We Imagine as Light ”, Mumbai-based Payal Kapadia ’s narrative directorial debut, was announced in the competition lineup alongside legendary Cannes regulars: European heavyweights such as Jacques Audiard and Yorgos Lanthimos, American auteurs David Cronenberg and Paul Schrader, and Asian visionary Jia Zhangke.

Kapadia is no stranger to Cannes; her short, the tone poem “Afternoon Clouds,” screened there in 2017, and her politically searing hybrid documentary “A Night of Knowing Nothing” won the L’Œil d’Or in 2021. But she has the unique distinction of being the first South Asian woman director in competition.

In addition, British Indian writer-director Sandhya Suri’s narrative feature debut “Santosh” was selected for Un Certain Regard, and premiered on Monday. Two female feature directors of Indian origin in the Official Selection is a minor miracle, especially given Cannes’ notoriety for overlooking women directors , let alone those of color. (Both “All We Imagine” and “ Santosh ” have already found U.S. distribution out of the festival.)

An Indian female police officer in a tan uniform surrounded by other officers and civilians; still from 'Santosh'

She reflected on her training at the Film and Television Institute of India (FTII), one of the nation’s most renowned film schools. At FTII, “I watched a lot of European films. That is a language I have in a lot of my work, so perhaps it becomes easier for people from Western countries that I am referencing this kind of cinema. Maybe it fits well with their programming narratives?” she said. Also, unlike the majority of filmmakers from the subcontinent, she has French co-producers. Thomas Hakim and Julien Graff of petit chaos were also her collaborators on “The Night of Knowing Nothing.” “I like the French system,” Kapadia said. “It’s not one way is better, whatever works for you.”

Thierry Frémaux, the General Delegate of Cannes and programming kingmaker, when asked this question at a press conference last week, deflected . And to be fair, Kapadia pointed out that her short at Cannes was a “random” film school submission. Plus, other South Asian films that have played Un Certain Regard don’t necessarily have European bonafides.

What Kapadia and Suri’s movies do share — at the levels of training, story, theme, form, and even politics — is far more fascinating and should drum up industry and jury proclivity toward their films. Both filmmakers share a documentary background, despite different approaches to traversing the boundaries of fiction and nonfiction, and both undertook extensive field research before forming story worlds and characters.

Suri, who has worked with NGOs in small towns of India concerned with violence against women, said she wanted to “dissect violence and come in from inside. I thought it was very difficult to do in a documentary. How to bring understanding if I just show it?”

Sandhya Suri rehearse

That’s when she opted for a fiction feature and realized, “I’m making a genre film now. What do I know about that? To feel safe making fiction, I felt I had to do very thorough research. I didn’t want to make a fantasy or ghost-of-a-police film.”

From there, Suri started to research female constables and interview police anthropologists. In this process, she learned of an archaic government scheme of “appointment on compassionate grounds”,” meaning that eligible dependents of deceased police officers can inherit their husbands’ jobs. Suri spoke to many such widows, thereby creating the character Santosh.

By contrast, Kapadia’s film, about two migrant nurses in Mumbai negotiating an estranged husband and a risky boyfriend even as their colleague is forced to return to her village, had two inspirations that emerged from her research: Central Mumbai’s abandoned cotton mills, and Malayali women who migrate alone from the southern state of Kerala.

Of the former, Kapadia said, “I grew up at a time where I would hear the sirens of the mills everyday. As we grew older, the mills disappeared. One became a discotheque, another a high-end luxury mall. I have seen the gentrification of the area, of chawls turning into massive gated complexes. It struck me that [builders] wanted to erase history in some way.”

the lights journey

When she began doing research in 2022, Kapadia met some “comrades who are still now fighting for the rights of the mill workers and their housing. Recently, the movement has been revived by their children. The mills were given at a subsidized rate to the workers, so when the mills shut down, it was only right that the workers and their families get a place to stay. This is not what happened. A lot of them were swindled out of their land, as we know,” Kapadia said.

Directly explored in Kapadia’s film is the professional sociology of nursing, and the inner lives of migrant nurses. “My beginning point was women who came to Mumbai to provide for their families back home. The nursing profession is very difficult, hands on, with many long hours. A noble profession, well regarded in states like Kerala,” she said. “These women are supposed to be giving a lot of their lives to the patients. What about their own personal lives and turmoil, and the friendships among these women, is what I began to get interested in. It’s the new families we make because sometimes our own families let us down.”

Kusruti, meanwhile, is an actor fast rising in the global independent film circuit (most recently she appears in Shuchi Talati’s “Girls Will Be Girls,” which won an Audience Award at Sundance and is screening in the Cannes Écrans Juniors category). Kapadia first saw her in a short, “Memories of a Machine,” impressed by Kusruti’s direct deliveries to the camera.

A key challenge in “All We Imagine as Light” is that Kapadia speaks only Hindi, Gujarati, and Marathi, whereas Kusruti’s character speaks Malayalam. So the two collaborated closely, rehearsing and changing lines, and forming a nuanced understanding of the social milieu. Kusruti’s background in theater and her general versatility allowed her to internalize gestures. Kapadia, who finds fiction often a bit rigid, gets joy from “filmmaking as stitching and knitting, where you can put things inside and see voila what that makes.”

“I’m a single mother. It was very hard to shoot a film in this situation. I found a way. I maneuvered. I played chess. And it worked out,” Suri said.

“Santosh,” bought by Metrograph Pictures for U.S. distribution, premiered at the 2024 Cannes Film Festival in Un Certain Regard. “All We Imagine as Light,” bought by Sideshow and Janus Films, premieres in the main competition.
