Experience Egypt & Jordan – 5* Cruise

This was my first package tour so I've nothing to compare this experience with though I have independently explored 50+ countries. Hany was my contact person through Timeless Tours and was very prompt in answering questions and helping me change the itinerary skipping the beach days in Hurghada for other excursions such as Dendera, Valley of the Queens, Dahsure, and others. Remon, Mina, and George were my different guides in Egypt and did an excellent job keeping everything, everyone coordinated. The days were long and action-packed with many 8-9pm buffet dinners followed by 4:30am - 6am wake-up calls. There were a couple of times in Egypt where logistics made the itinerary impossible, like arriving 30 minutes before closing at the expansive Kamak Temple complex, but the entire Jordan portion of the tour seemed to evolve this way and the itinerary should definitely be reworked to include at least one other full day. Otherwise, we never went beyond the Oval Plaza Forum in Jerash so that we could rush off and eat a 14JD/US$19.75 lunch (not included), had less than 4 hours at Petra, left the Wadi Rum sunset early just as all the other groups were arriving, and spent far too much time at a ridiculously over-priced workshop across from Mt. Nebo rather than visiting the Orthodox Church of St. George as the trip itinerary listed. Still, however rushed, it was better than nothing for this trip of a lifetime. I'm now open to package tours as I age and would definitely recommend Timeless Tours and Tour Radar - though please, update your recommended App so that it will function with the latest models of phones!

Jordan & Egypt Uncovered

I had a great guide in Jordan, helpful and knowledgeable without information overload. Unfortunately the Egypt guide was the polar opposite and had us standing in full sun for an hour while he prattled on. The ferry from Jordan to Egypt was 9 hrs overdue and as your on your own you have no idea whats happening, this was frightening. Overall good content enjoyed the trip but would recommend doing a deluxe over this basic as everything is budget and at times uncomfortable and dirty.

Just a quick note to say that we had a great time in Egypt and Jordan. These are 2 very amazing countries with very friendly people everywhere we went. The extra camel ride at sunset to the Pyramids was fantastic. A much better view of such a special place.

Absolutely brilliant tour. Some busy days but well worth it to see so many incredible sights. Adham and Faisel, the tour guides for Egypt and Jordan were both awesome. Wouldn't change a thing about the tour. I loved it!

Mo was amazing! He shared so much knowledge about all areas of Egypt. He went over and above with every aspect of our trip to ensure we had the best time and were safe wherever we went. I couldn’t speak more highly of him. Thanks so much Mo!

The Egypt portion was outstanding. Our guide, Nabil, was fabulous. However, the Jordan portion of the tour, was poorly organized, with jammed tiny tour busses, and a horrible experience at the Bedouin camp. Shared dirty washrooms, sand on the sheets, and running out of food and coffee at breakfast. Our guide did the best he could, with what he was given. I feel that ExPat and Tpur Radar

Unforgettable Jordan and Cairo Tour

Unforgettable Jordan and Cairo

The tour guides and concierges were Excellent! However, the tour company, Europamundo often took too long to reply to questions in the lead up to my departure. I really don't think I should have been receiving pertinent information like the country portal entry requirements when I was literally in the cab on the way to the airport. Furthermore, it turned out that my party of 2, were the only ones on the particular tour (Unforgettable Jordan & Cairo), so I really don't understand why there was such delay. We submitted l required documents and payments on time. Let me once a reiterate that our tour guides in Jordan and Cairo were OUTSTANDING, patient, knowledgeable, punctual and very professional.

Very comprehensive tour with all sights to see included. Great guides and attentive assistance from the agency. Drivers were on time for pick up. The chosen hotels were nice and clean. The Bedouian camp and Aljoun Forest Park accommodations were extra special as they were cabins but with modern amenities. I chose The Nile Cruise, instead of the Feluca boat, and I did not regret paying for the extra because the cruise was comfortable and included all meals and shore excursions. Tip: visit the National Museum of Egyptian Civilization in Cairo for their exhibit of mummies. Another tip: maybe opt for a flight from Cairo to Luxor because the sleeper train is not very comfortable, but if you are ok with a tight space and sudden jerks and rattling noise while trying to sleep, then go for the overnight sleeper train. Overall, a wonderful trip and was handled very well by the tour company.

Timeless Egypt & Jordan Tour

Timeless Egypt & Jordan

Egypt tour guide Mina was very good and personable. Could tell he really cared and liked sharing his country’s history with us all. He interacted great with everyone. He included us in his story telling of history which made it more engaging and memorable. He was very patient with a couple of people who frustrated everyone else. The two from America rudely walked away while he was presenting and they ignored his directions requiring him to repeat himself to them many times. Mina remained professional even when one refused to complete the survey at the end of the tour. The one excursion I did not like was the Numidian village. The boat ride there and back was great. The village itself felt fake and setup. No history was presented by the host. I did not like the crocodiles packed in a small cage in the house. That was not what I expected. Many or all of our tour group did not like the house experience. The Nile cruise with a balcony was great. The seafood restaurant in Alexandria was not good. Cold food, over cooked. More schwarma instead. Something like that. Overall Egypt experience was good. Jordan Appreciate that we were met at the airport and helped through customs. We didn’t have that in Egypt somehow. Very nice. Would have liked that experience in Egypt after travelling 13 hours. Tour member contacted our host, Kaldun. He said he wasn’t aware we were arriving that day. Appreciate that he changed his personal plans to meet us and take us on a tour that same day. Very good. Jordan trip I would have liked to have awaken earlier and seen more. We did that in Egypt many times. Petra I would have liked to have started earlier than 7:45am. We saw the sights in Petra but it was a rush. Many of the group went on their own early at 6am instead of waiting for the set time. The Bedouin camp outside of Wadi Rum. Hillawi camp. Very disappointed compared to the description. Expected a quiet camp to sit outside at night with everyone. Many children and families. Loud music until late in the night with bright lights and a central dance area. Jordan was good as well overall.

What people love about Egypt And Jordan Tours

Timeless was very well organised and made my time very enjoyable and amazing! Our provided guide Nabil Shohdy (Tiger) was extremely knowledgeable and made my experience 100x better. Definitely recommend! -Bailey
Well organised and run tour. Likeable and capable tour leaders. Minimal steering into shopping situations without putting non shoppers under pressure to buy. Much appreciated, as I intensely dislike being set up in a situation where I feel trapped. Usually there is the pretence of showing one how something is being made, which ultimately leads to a showroom and coercion to buy. This is ok for the shoppers in the group, but often very uncomfortable for the ones who aren't.
I got to see all the things that I expected and a few more. I did feel that the trip was a bit rushed though.

Visit the great sun temples of Abu Simbel, built by Ramses II at the height of his New Kingdom reign. In one of the world's greatest cooperative preservation efforts, these temples were dismantled and moved in 1968 to save them from the flooding of the Aswan Dam. The Temple of Ramses II was constructed so that the sun's rays would illuminate four statues of Egyptian deities within the sanctuary on his birthday and on the anniversary of his coronation, October 20 and February 20. The temple is fronted by four colossal figures of Ramses II seated with the gods and attended by his Queen and daughters. The smaller temple is dedicated to Queen Nefertari, who appears as Hathor, the goddess of love, joy and fertility.

Dive into Egyptian culture before your tour even begins. Get your first taste with lunch at a local restaurant, featuring traditional Egyptian cuisine. After, move on to the National Museum of Egyptian Civilization. This contemporary 5,300,000 square foot space sits in the historic neighborhood of Fustat. The museum first opened in 2017 and is home to a collection of 50,000 artifacts, tracing the Egyptian civilization from prehistoric times to today. On April 3, 2021 the world watched in awe as the Egyptian Ministry of Antiquities relocated here the Royal Mummies during the stunning Pharaohs’ Golden Parade. The 22 mummies (18 kings and 4 queens) of Egypt’s most important pharaohs and queens were displayed on the streets of Cairo as they were transported from the Museum in Tahrir Square to their new home in the Museum of Egyptian Civilization. This large collection of royal mummies includes the likes of King Ramses II, the most famous pharaoh of the New Kingdom, and Queen Hatshepsut, who came to rule at a time when women did not become pharaohs. With the expert guidance of a local Egyptologist, enjoy a visit of this impressive museum – a perfect introduction to your exploration of Egypt. This optional tour is operated by a local representative and requires guests to have a pre-night hotel stay in Cairo. The optional is available from January 1, 2024 onwards.

A BIT ABOUT OUR EGYPT AND JORDAN TOURS

When you book Egypt and Jordan tours through us, you are booking high quality tours from an Egypt tour operator that has been making travel dreams come alive ever since 1955. With so much experience behind the tours we offer, we believe that no other tour operator is better equipped than we are to provide a flawless travel experience to these incredible destinations.

When it comes to booking Egypt and Jordan tours, it is perfectly understandable that people have many concerns. Is the price right; what sort of hotels will they be staying in, and will there be someone they can turn to if something goes wrong? These are just a few common concerns, but at NileCruiseHolidays.com, all these concerns are not even relevant because we have totally eliminated them.

To begin with, our Egypt and Jordan tours cost, on average, about 15% less than the industry standard. Our clients also don’t have to worry about where they will be staying because we have partnered with some of the best hotels, and our clients are always booked into 4 or 5 hotels, just as they are always booked onto 5-Star Nile cruises. The only exception is when there simply aren’t any 4 or 5 star hotels in the area, but even then, you can be sure that you will be staying at the best of what is available.

We believe in transparency, so a list of the hotels where you will be staying in is included in all of our Egypt and Jordan tour itineraries. If you click on one of our available tours, and then you click on the “Prices” tab on the left hand side of the page, you will see all the various price options, as well as a list of the relevant hotels.

Last but not least, when you travel with us, you are never really left on your own. Our representatives will always be airports to greet you on arrivals, and they’ll be there to bid you farewell on departures.

During your tours in Egypt you will have your very own Egyptologist tour guide and a driver for your tours in and around Cairo. There will also be one of our English speaking Egyptologist tour guides aboard the cruise ship for the duration of your cruise, and our tour representatives and guides in Jordan will also be right there with you every step of the way.

EXPLORING THE VERY BEST OF CAIRO AND BEYOND

As is to be expected, each of our Egypt and Jordan tours are designed to be unique, which naturally means that the various itineraries vary from one to the other, but you can be sure that all of them will include visiting several of the very best Cairo tourist attractions, although some of these might be a short distance away from Cairo, rather than being in Cairo itself.

Okay, let’s take a brief look at some of the amazing places which you can expect to see when you book one of our Egypt and Jordan tours:

The Giza Pyramids and the Sphinx  – It should come as little surprise that the Giza necropolis features in all of our Egypt and Jordan tours. After all, the great Pyramids of Giza and the Sphinx are quite literally the face of Ancient Egypt. They are not only the most instantly recognizable sight in Egypt, but also the most visited ancient site.

What many visitors don’t realize, however, is that the Giza pyramids are by no means the oldest pyramids in Egypt. The Dashur Pyramids all predate the Giza Pyramids, as does the Djoser Pyramid at the Saqqara necropolis.

Another common misconception is that many people automatically assume that all, or at least most of the pharaohs were laid to rest in pyramids. In reality, only a few pharaohs were buried in pyramids, while the vast majority of pharaohs were buried in rock-cut tombs.

The Royal Saqqara Necropolis  – The Saqqara necropolis is an ancient royal burial ground which is located just a short drive away from Cairo, and it features in most, if not all of our Egypt and Jordan tours. While there are several fascinating things to see at this site, it is best known for its Djoser Pyramid, which is also often called the Step Pyramid.

This huge and intricate pyramid complex was built during the 27 th  century BC, making it the oldest pyramid of its kind ever discovered. It was also the very first stone building or large stone structure ever built.

The Egyptian Museum  – The Egyptian Museum in Cairo is another attraction which features in all of our Egypt and Jordan tours. Of course, if you don’t want to visit the museum or any other sites mentioned in our tour itineraries, then our customized Egypt and Jordan tours would be your best option because they can be tailored to meet your own exact needs.

tours of egypt and jordan

The Egyptian Museum is home to the world’s largest collection of ancient Egyptian artifacts that represent a period of around 5,000 years. There are more than 100,000 artifacts on display, and even more which are locked away in storage due to a lack of space, but this is all due to change shortly when the all-new Grand Egyptian Museum opens at Giza, hopefully in 2020.

One of the most fascinating areas in the museum is an area known as the Treasures Room, where all the artifacts from King Tutankhamen’s tomb are on display. There’s also a Mummies room where visitors can see real mummies, but a separate ticket is required for this room, and it is not included in our Egypt and Jordan tours. Tickets can however be purchased in person at the museum.

The Khan El Khalili Bazaar  – Our Egypt and Jordan tours simply wouldn’t be complete without a visit to Cairo’s famous Khan El Khalili Bazaar. Yes, you can visit bazaars and markets all over Egypt and the rest of the Middle East, but you can be sure that not a single one of them can be compared to the Khan El Khalili Bazaar which has essentially be open ever since 1389. It is one of the oldest open-air markets in the Middle East, and also thought to be the biggest.

Even though shopping malls have started to become incredibly popular in Cairo, this bustling market is still the place where most everyday Egyptian go to buy their daily groceries and other odds and ends. It is a great place to do a bit of shopping, but it is also a lovely place to stroll around while doing some people watching.

THE UNFORGETTABLE MAGIC OF NILE RIVER CRUISES

tours to egypt and jordan

All of our Egypt and Jordan tours include a Nile River cruise, either from Aswan to Luxor or from Luxor to Aswan. These 5-Star Nile cruise packages are a perfect blend of relaxation and sightseeing. They really do allow you to discover the ancient wonders of the Nile River Valley in absolute comfort and style.

The various tours and excursions you enjoy during your cruise are all small group tours consisting of a small number of our other clients, and one of our professional English speaking Egyptologist tour guides.

While Nile cruise itineraries might not all be the same, you will still get to see the top attractions in Aswan, Kom Ombo, Edfu and Luxor.

In Aswan, for example, you can expect to see places such as the Aswan High Dam, the Unfinished Obelisk, and the wonderful ancient Temple of Isis which is also called the Temple of Philae. During your cruise, the vessel will also dock at Kom Ombo and at Edfu, and during these stops you will be taken to see the incredible Kom Ombo Temple which was dedicated to two different gods, as well as the Temple of Haeroris which is the best preserved ancient temple ever discovered.

Finally, when it comes to Luxor, you will be taken to see and explore the massive Karnak Temple complex and Luxor Temple on the East Bank, and on the West Bank you can look forward to visiting Queen Hatshepsut Temple; the Colossi of Memnon, and Valley of the Kings. Valley of the Kings was a royal burial site where 63 tombs have been discovered, including the tomb of King Tutankhamen.

ENJOY THE TIMELESS CHARM OF JORDAN

tours in egypt and jordan

Stunning Wadi Rum – a valley cut into sandstone and granite rock in southern Jordan.

After enjoying an incredible Nile River cruise, it will then be time for your transfer to Amman international Airport in Jordan for the second phase of our Egypt and Jordan tours. While individual itineraries differ, some Jordan tourist attractions are included in most, if not all of our Egypt and Jordan tours. For example, most of these package tours will include a sightseeing tour in Amman.

The Rose City of Petra is another ancient site that practically all of our Egypt and Jordan tours. Also known as the Lost City of Petra, this indescribable site features an ancient city that was carved out of the sandstone cliffs of a long and deep narrow gorge by the ancient Nabateans.

It once served as a major trading post until it was eventually deserted, after which it all but forgotten before being rediscovered during the 19 th  century. Simply put, no amount of words can truly describe this incredible UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Most of our Egypt and Jordan itineraries also include a visit to the Dead Sea where visitors can experience floating on the mineral-dense water. Yes it is true, you really can float effortlessly on the water, and even read a book while you are doing so.

Because of the ultra-high salinity of the water, there the Dead Sea is completely devoid of aquatic life. The banks of the Dead Sea are the lowest dry place on earth at more than 400 meters below sea level.

Wadi Rum is another place which features in most of our Egypt and Jordan tour packages, a desert area made famous by the movie, Lawrence of Arabia. As to be expected, all our tour packages also include visiting several other historical sites but these vary, depending on which one of our Egypt and Jordan tours you opt for

ONE VACATION, THREE DESTINATIONS

If our classic Egypt and Jordan tours just aren’t enough, and you are looking for an even more immersive travel experience, then our 19 day Egypt, Jordan and Morocco tours might be just what you are looking for. When you book one of these tour packages, you will get to see and enjoy all the same incredible places as you would if you were to book one of our regular Egypt and Jordan tours.

You will also get to enjoy a wonderful 5-day Nile River cruise that will also take you to the same places, but the big difference is, you will also get to experience the magic of Morocco with its 5 imperial cities and its vast amount of unspoiled natural beauty.

Enjoy marvelous tours of the 5 imperial cities: Casablanca; Rabat; Fez; Meknes, and Marrakech, and soak up the beauty and charm as you drive in air-conditioned comfort from one place to next. Stop at remote little villages; mix with the locals while weaving your way along a winding mountain pass through the High Atlas Mountains.

Morocco can compete with Egypt in terms of ancient monuments, but it makes up for it in so many other ways. After all, there’s a good reason why Morocco has become such a tremendously popular travel destination.

YOUR TIME, YOUR BUDGET, YOUR VACATION

At NileCruiseHolidays.com, we know how valuable your time is, and we understand that different people have different tastes and budgets. This is why all of our Egypt and Jordan tours, including our Egypt, Jordan and Morocco tours can be customized and tailored to suit the exact needs of our clients.

And, if you can’t find the perfect Egypt and Jordan tour amongst our existing range of tours, we can easily work with you to build your ultimate tour package from scratch. When you book Egypt and Jordan tours through us, we want your vacation to be everything you were hoping for, and more.

The notion of "Jordanian hospitality" is strongly embedded in the culture, and visitors are frequently made to feel welcome and well-cared for throughout their stay. While cultural norms and rituals may differ from what you are used to, both Egypt and Jordan have a long history of welcoming visitors and making them feel at home. To encourage pleasant interactions and experiences with the local community, it is always essential to follow local customs, traditions, and etiquette.

Wadi Rum Tours

The abundance of iron oxide in the sand and rocks gives Wadi Rum its red hue. Iron oxide, popularly known as rust, is responsible for the reddish color of the sand and rocks. The iron in the rocks and minerals oxidizes with time, resulting in the unique red hue of Wadi Rum. The combination of the desert landscape, sunshine, and iron oxide results in a magnificent and one-of-a-kind red desert setting.

Traveling to Jordan

The clothing code in Jordan is usually conservative, especially in more traditional and religious locations. While female tourists are not required to wear traditional garb, it is encouraged that they dress modestly in order to respect the local culture and customs.Women should wear loose-fitting attire that covers their shoulders, upper arms, and knees. Long skirts, slacks, or dresses that extend below the knee are suitable. It is also advised to avoid wearing apparel that is overly tight or exposed. The dress code is more liberal in popular districts and resorts, such as Amman and Aqaba; therefore, wearing shorts may be more acceptable. However, it is still advised to dress modestly and respect the country's cultural customs. Carry a scarf or shawl with you to cover your shoulders or head if necessary, especially while visiting sacred locations. It is crucial to note that these are broad principles, and it is recommended that you investigate and respect the unique cultural norms and practices of the locations in Jordan that you want to visit.

The length of the walk in Petra depends on the route you take and the locations you want to see within the site. The most usual and popular path is 1.2 kilometers (0.75 miles) long from Petra's entrance, known as the Siq, to the Treasury (Al-Khazneh). Depending on your pace, this section of the walk takes about 20 to 30 minutes.

Countries Visited

Places visited, suggested duration, customizable itinerary, cairo – glamorous views over the river nile.

After landing at Cairo International, you will be greeted by a representative and assisted through customs and immigration before being transferred to your private vehicle for your journey into the city. After your flight to Cairo, you will have a peaceful space where you can fully relax and recuperate from your journey in the luxuries of the famous Marriott Mena House, which has enchanted guests since opening in the late 1800's. The five-star pioneer combines serene vistas with modern opulence in a sensational setting.

The gorgeous hotel offers a selection of rooms with views to Egypt’s captivating pyramids symbolizing more than 7,000 years of civilization blending effortlessly with the welcoming, modern comforts for which the Marriott Mena House Hotel is famous. Celebrities like Frank Sinatra, Cecil B. DeMille, Charlton Heston, and Winston Churchill have enjoyed the beauty of the Marriott Mena House Hotel. You will indulge in the unique location with 40 acres of manicured gardens during your introduction to Egypt as the Nile glistens softly below the city when the evening lights replace the view of the sunset.

What's Included:

River Nile Cruise – The Extravagant Wonder of Karnak and Luxor Temples

Wake the next morning to be privately transferred to Cairo Airport for your short flight to Luxor and travel straight to Luxor Temple. Luxor baffles even the most worldly of travelers as seeing such ancient heritage stand in such a pristine state of conservation is hard to comprehend. Your mind will circle with questions on how these tombs and temples were built on such an immense scale? Palatial columns rise skyward and dwarf all of those who wander across the imposing temple floors. Sculpted figures guard entrances ten meters high, their eyes cast with indecipherable emotion. Footsteps will echo and bounce across the walls before evaporating into the desert sky.

Your first glimpse will be forever memorable as the scale of the temple is experienced in all of its primitive glory. As you admire the hieroglyphs and soak up the murals, you will realize that this is just the start of your journey through Egypt’s dynasties. Like each day on this itinerary, every tour is private, and your Egyptologist guide will tailor the speed and information to your interests. There is almost too much to see around Luxor, and it will be easy to be overwhelmed by temple after temple, tomb after tomb. Your guide will individualize your discovery and focus your time on the most exquisite and interesting.

You will continue down the old Avenue of Sphinxes to the temple complex of Karnak, and then the scale will multiply. The largest of all of Egypt’s temples, the scale can only be comprehended when you stand in the main temple courtyard. You can take your time and allow the silence to take over as impressions of stone imprint themselves. Your guide will unravel the details and over the course of the day, will answer those questions you had when you landed in Luxor earlier in the day. There will be time to visit the Luxor Museum should you wish, as you travel the banks of the River Nile.

River Nile Cruise – Exploring the Valley of the Kings

On Luxor’s opposite bank lie the tombs of the pharaohs, the grand structures built to protect them in a future life. The rulers of Ancient Egypt’s 18th dynasty were mummified and left in the Valley of the Kings and Valley of the Queens, where exquisite details adorn the walls and stories are told in strange images. You will visit four of the tombs, and your guide will explain the potential options. King Tutankhamen’s is usually seen as unmissable, predominantly for its fame. King Ramesses VI’s should also be seen for its beauty and size.

Down in the musty tombs, you can inspect the walls of detail as your guide will point out what has been left behind after over 3,000 years. An ethereal atmosphere hangs in the air and will remind you that these were places of rest. There will be a beautiful moment as you ascend the steps and return to the tomb entrance and admire the endless vista over the desert. After a stop for lunch, you will be guided through the Valley of the Queens and take time in the Mortuary Temple of Queen Hatshepsut. Of all Egypt’s ancient monuments, perhaps none capture the era’s stylistic innovation as well as this one. Enjoy your time cruising away from Luxor in the evening.

River Nile Cruise – Cruising Past the Dazzling Temples

Elegant and exceptionally appointed, the cruise ship is one of the Nile’s premier vessels. Opulent views come from your deluxe cabin, in the restaurants, and along the sun decks revealing the tranquility of the Nile and the Sahara beyond. Your boat is spacious and carefully designed to maximize the panoramas while always providing shade. Pass the forgotten villages, the green oases that cling to the sand and the remarkable temples that rise graciously from the desert. Edfu and Kom Ombo Temples have inspiring stories that are written in the symbols and sculptures that encircle them. Your private guide will narrate the tales of the crocodile god and belligerent hippos. These stops will provide the interlude to a very relaxed day of cruising that will immerse you in the gentle rhythm of the desert.

River Nile Cruise – Aswan’s Remarkable Highlights

The sunrise over the River Nile is a striking sight as bands of color linger on the horizon with golden tones shimmering off of the water. As with each morning on the cruise ship, your sumptuous breakfast will be spent with beautiful views as you cruise into Aswan to spend the day exploring a remarkable collection of highlights. Philae Temple, Aswan Dam, the staggering granite slab of the Unfinished Obelisk will pass your view as you begin to appreciate how each of Egypt’s sights has its own ambiance and style.

After a relaxed lunch, you will spend your afternoon on a traditional felucca sailboat as wind power will take you between the exotic green islands and flourishing oases. The boat is a vessel of yesteryear, a serene immersion in the distinctive mood of Aswan as it harmoniously blends Saharan desert styles with Arabic innovation and the charms of tradition. Aswan is Egypt’s most memorable town as the markets are alive with color while locals spend entire afternoons on cafe terraces, and there is a real sense of a world frozen in time. Included in the felucca cruise is a stop at a tiny Nubian village, where you can transfer to a camel and ride into the desert at sunset before settling into your relaxing accommodation combining history with exceptional attention to luxurious detail.

Cairo – Day Trip to Abu Simbel by Air

Abu Simbel is worth the journey. Rescued from the flooding of the Aswan Dam and expertly reconstructed, the Abu Simbel temples are very different to everything you will have previously seen in Luxor. It will be the details that mesmerize; the glance in the eye of sculptures that guard the entrance, the gold leaf shimmering, intricate hieroglyphs found along a hallway of seemingly endless statues. After a relaxed morning, you will fly over the desert to Abu Simbel for a private tour of these astonishing monuments. After that, continue to Cairo and return for the night to the Marriott Mena House Hotel, a place of phenomenal old-world grandeur. Ascend to the roof for an exceptional view of the Pyramids of Giza above the iconic palm trees in the foreground.

Cairo – The Epic Pyramids

For many visitors, the Pyramids of Giza are Ancient Egypt, the single icon that represents the innovation and expression of the world’s first great civilization. Your private guide will take you into the World Heritage Site at sunrise, before the crowds descend, to give you plenty of time to soak up their scale and listen to the enveloping silence. Explore the interior of one of the temples, visit the famous viewpoints, gaze up at the protective Sphinx of Giza, and understand why photos simply do not do justice to these monuments. By mid to late morning, you will be back at Mena House Hotel for a hearty brunch and some relaxed hours spent on the roof. Your private afternoon tour will reveal the oldest of the pyramids, the crumbling and weathered stepped pyramids of Saqqara. While not as visually impressive, these pyramids are a great insight into the construction and design of the icons.

Cairo – Hidden Charms in the Egyptian Museum and Coptic Cairo

Wander through the Egyptian Museum of Antiquities and an endearing chaos will greet you at every angle. Golden fragments are hidden amongst the dust with seemingly priceless artifacts lumped in piles.  It will feel as though you are opening an ancient treasure chest to search through endless gems to find one that ultimately stands out. It can be very confusing, and it could take months to see it all, but with your private guide, you can sidestep straight to the most evocative treasures, including the sparkling wonders excavated from King Tutankhamen’s Tomb. The museum first opened in 1902 and houses approximately 120,000 artifacts.  After lunch, you can spend the afternoon wandering through the cobbled streets of Coptic Cairo, where churches date to the 5th century AD. The vibrant markets are ideal places to purchase souvenirs while aromas of anise, coriander, and black pepper drift through the narrow lanes.

Petra – Sunset Over the Ancient Sandstone City Then Petra by Candlelight

Fly from Cairo to Amman where you will notice the change in atmosphere as the bustle of one capital fades to the tranquility of another. You will be greeted at the airport, and it will be a three-hour drive out to Petra, with a couple of potential stops on route dependent on your mood. Relax at the five-star Movenpick Petra and let the heat of the afternoon slip away before you enter the mesmeric sandstone city. The hotel combines the beauty and flair of natural stone, intricate handcrafted wood, and Middle Eastern fabrics for a collection of sensational textures accentuating the ambiance around one of the New Seven Wonders of the World. The Arabic-style courtyard provides a soothing window into the past and a selection of the luxurious rooms offer enchanting views over the Great Rift Valley. The comforts of the modern rooms contrast the antique ambiance of the ancient city located across the street from the hotel.

Late afternoon will cast a seductive glow onto the rock as swirls of rustic red and radiant orange bounce back off of the canyon walls. Tomorrow you will explore the different buildings to admire their contrasts, but today’s sunset will be about admiring the city from a raised vantage point and watching the subtle changes as dusk takes hold. Your private guide will lead you towards the famous entrance of Petra for the evening tour. You will descend slowly as the canyon narrows, and you approach Petra’s ancient, hidden entrance.

Take a few more steps, and a whole world will open as buildings are carved into red cliffs and sculptures dominate the sandstone. With candlelight as your guide, you will make out the city avenues as they wind around the cliffs and lead to majestic layers of rock. Silence reigns, and you will hear every footstep. Hold your light out and reveal a new set of detail, which then disappears as you walk on. Exploring Petra at candlelight has an almost transcendent element, one that slowly evokes the atmosphere of this city’s distant origins.

Dead Sea – Exploring the Exceptional Details of Petra

Petra looks different in the morning light as it is both inviting and inquisitive to showcase a scale that was impossible to grasp yesterday evening. This sandstone city is not merely a cluster of photogenic buildings, but a sprawling expanse of caves, tombs, Roman pillars, polished granite and sculpted icons. After breakfast, your private guide will explain the potential route options. You can only get around the city by foot, or by donkey. The area close to Petra’s narrow canyon entrance has the most famous sights but starting from the opposite side will reveal the city’s most impressive temple. The walk could be less than an hour, uncovering a few exceptional icons or you could also spend a whole day and only see half the city, such is its enormity and vivid detail. Take as long as you like because, like all good cities, the real beauty comes when you head off the beaten track. From Petra, you will be transferred to the Dead Sea, a two-hour journey that will culminate in the peaceful views overlooking the Dead Sea.

Dead Sea – Free Day on the Water

This will be a day at your leisure, and you can begin your day gazing over the water from your hotel balcony. Your hotel embodies tranquility with spacious interiors opening out onto the sea breeze for your own secluded piece of the coastline. The Dead Sea is Jordan’s premier coastal escape, even though the salty water is now hemmed in by landmasses. Relax by the shaded pool as drinks are served or take a swim in the Dead Sea to experience the buoyancy of the salt. You will feel something comforting and recognizable about the Dead Sea, yet there is also something endearingly different and exotic.

Amman – Final Historical Highlights and Departure

The journey back to Amman can take two hours with a scenic ride on route to dropping you at the airport for your international departure. But for an evening departure, this final transfer can include many intriguing stops. Spend time at the Roman ruins of Jerash for insight into the blend of Greco-Roman architecture and Arab traditions dating back to the 1st century BC or explore the epic 12th century crusader castle of Kerak, the largest crusader castle in Jordan, before reaching Queen Alia International Airport.

Detailed Description

Egypt and Jordan abound with history. Pyramids proudly dominate the desert while temples celebrate the glory of ancient dynasties, forgotten cities are sculpted from sandstone, and traditional villages and untouched tombs are juxtaposed along the banks of the River Nile. Few other regions can rival their sense of old glory with their expressions of fantastic worlds that existed long before the notions of Western civilization. Your handcrafted tour will bring the old-world glory of Egypt and Jordan and wrap it all in a thick layer of modern luxury with carefully selected hotels and guides to provide a contemporary glamour to complement the history. The Great Sphinx of Giza, King Tutankhamen’s Tomb, Petra, Luxor, Aswan, Abu Simbel and others will showcase both astonishing scale and a sublime level of intricacy and intimacy. Travelers will also have the opportunity to partake in Egypt's modern history when staying at the the Marriott Mena House. Since its inception in the late 1800's, the Marriott Mena House has a rich history and has been the favorite among many celebrities, foreign dignitaries, and Zicasso travelers. Most of the rooms at the Mena House offer a direct view of the Great Pyramid.

Begin your trip with a lavish night spent overlooking the River Nile in Cairo, and then settle into the charm of the region’s finest cruise ship, the intimate five-star Movenpick Royal Lily. This vessel will be your base for four days with a large balcony that gazes out onto desert sunsets and riverside scenes. Private Egyptologist guides will lead you into the annals of history, starting in Luxor and Karnak, and then into the Valley of the Kings. Descend into the famous tombs and admire their untrammeled opulence, and then gaze skywards as footsteps echo across temple floors as you explore all of the wonders that make Luxor the great open-air museum that it is.

You will soon be cruising to Aswan with a stop at two remarkable temples before docking. A new set of highlights will emerge here, some of which are romantically discovered on a private felucca sailboat excursion. The end of the week will be very relaxed with your short return flights to Abu Simbel bringing a dramatic insight into one of the world’s most expressive historical sights. Landing back in Aswan, you will have the afternoon to relax in the palm-dappled oasis at the Old Cataract Aswan, a glamorous hotel that inspired Agatha Christie and epitomizes the quality of the accommodation provided throughout the tour.

Cairo has many highlights but the chaos of the city can be overwhelming, so the Kempinski Nile Hotel will provide you an oasis of calm to escape the noise and the crowds. From there, you will take private tours to the unforgettable sights like the Great Pyramids of Giza and the Mummy Room at the Egyptian Museum of Antiquities. Your next two days will be spent in Petra, with two unique tours that will unravel the elegance of this lost sandstone city. To complete your journey will be two nights at the Dead Sea, where the tranquility of nature will take center stage with views that are postcard-perfect. Our Egypt travel specialists use their expertise to ensure your memories of Egypt are as amazing as the history and scenery.

An Update from Egypt & Jordan

We've added some new photos and videos from a recent trip to Egypt and Jordan with our guests in December. You can view them here along with a message for guests considering traveling to this region from Robin Tauck, co-owner and former President and CEO of Tauck Inc.

4x4 adventure in Wadi Rum

Desert offroad adventure in jordan's wadi rum.

Jordan's Wadi Rum – popularly known as the "Valley of the Moon" – is home to some of the most stunning desert landscapes on Earth. Exploring its beautiful, lunar-like dunes and towering sandstone cliffs by four-wheel-drive vehicle is an absolutely unforgettable experience – and we invite you to do just that… and perhaps even ride a camel… on this thrilling off-road adventure!

The Valley of the Kings

Discovering egypt's valley of the kings.

Nestled in Egypt's Theban hills west of the Nile River, near today's Luxor, stands the Valley of the Kings – where, between the 16th and 11th centuries BC, complexes of tombs were cut out of the rock to house the remains of the Pharaohs and other nobles of Egypt's New Kingdom, and prepare them for the afterlife. This UNESCO World Heritage Site contains more than 60 identified tombs and chambers. While many were once filled with treasures, most have been plundered through the ages… with the exception of that of the famous tomb of Tutankhamun, discovered intact in the 1920s, whose artifacts and remains have been removed and preserved. Visiting any of these tombs today is an experience not to be missed.

Abu Simbel – The Temples that Moved

Discover the remarkable temples of abu simbel, one of the most recognizable sites of ancient egypt..

Originally located on the banks of the Nile River for 3,000 years, in an incredible feat of engineering, Abu Simbel was dismantled and rebuilt in the 1960's and relocated on a higher hill to make way for the Aswan High Dam. The complex contains two temples; a large one containing four colossal statues of Ramesses II and a second, smaller temple thought to be dedicated to Queen Nefertari. The entrance way of the larger temple was designed in such a way that on two days of the year, October and February 22, the sun illuminates the inner sanctuary including three statues seated on a bench, one of which is the pharaoh himself.

About Booking This Tour

Travel Documents

All guests are required to provide their passport information to us at time of booking.

If you are a U.S. citizen traveling internationally , you will need a passport valid for six months beyond the completion of your Tauck journey for entry into Jordan and Egypt. You will need a visa for Jordan and Egypt (both included in tour cost).

In addition to a valid passport, U.S., U.K. and Australian citizens are also required to have a visa to enter Jordan and Egypt. The Jordanian visa will be issued upon arrival to the airport at no cost. Please note that Tauck will cover the expense of your visa for entry to Egypt, and it will be issued on tour. Please Note: Effective October 1, 2023 Canadian citizens will need to apply for a paper VISA from the nearest Egyptian Embassy or Consulate for entry into Egypt; e-visas will no longer be issued to Canadian citizens.

If you are citizen of another country traveling internationally, please contact an embassy or consulate of Egypt and of Jordan to determine what travel documentation is required.

Please note that longer stays abroad for any purpose may require additional travel documentation.

We strongly recommend that you make at least two photocopies of all the travel documents that you bring with you. Include copies of the photo page of your passport that contains the date of issuance, the date of expiration and your citizenship. Secure one set of copies in the safe in your room while traveling and leave one set behind with someone at home who will assist you in the event your documents are misplaced, lost or stolen.

To facilitate Travel Requirements, destinations are increasingly utilizing online forms that require digital proof that you've successfully completed your submission (via an email, QR code, etc.) To ensure smooth travels and peace of mind, we strongly recommend all guests carry a personal smart phone and sign up for international data plans before traveling overseas.

TRAVELING WITH CHILDREN AS A GUARDIAN: If you are traveling as the guardian of a child/children, we strongly suggest that you carry a letter from both parents of the child authorizing emergency treatment in the event of illness or accident. For travel abroad, many foreign countries have specific entry requirements for children under 21 who are traveling internationally without BOTH parents. (These requirements are in response to the increased incidence of children being abducted and taken abroad.) PLEASE NOTE THAT TAUCK IS NOT RESPONSIBLE for the disruption of travel caused by improper documentation for children traveling without both parents.

Travel Protection Plan

Effective for plans purchased as of July 1, 2021:

Tauck's Guest Protection

Tauck's Guest Protection provides you with cancellation protection before your journey begins as well as insurance benefits while you are traveling. Guest Protection includes the following:

Cancellation Waiver – Provided by Tauck:

Under Tauck's Cancellation Fee Waiver you can cancel your tour for ANY REASON up to the day before departure and receive a money-back refund (except in Extreme Circumstances*) on the land tour cost, based on your original method of payment.

*Extreme Circumstances:  In the event of an act of God, war (whether declared or undeclared), terrorism, accident, natural disaster, outbreak of disease, or other event or circumstance beyond our control that contributes to or results in cancellation rates above our historical cancellation rates in the absence of such event or occurrence, Tauck reserves the right to issue a credit to you in lieu of a money-back refund, applicable to a future Tauck journey.

Travel Insurance Benefits – Underwritten by United States Fire Insurance Company.

  • Trip Cancellation –  If you must cancel your tour due to a covered reason, the plan provides coverage for the amount you paid for your travel arrangements. Since the non-insurance cancellation waiver takes care of the land package cancellation fees already, this benefit reimburses the airfare cancellation charges up to the value of your original airfare purchase.
  • Trip Interruption –  If you have to interrupt your tour for covered reasons, the plan provides reimbursement to catch up to your tour or return home.
  • Travel Delay –  Provides reimbursement for missed, prepaid travel arrangements if you are delayed by a common carrier, natural disaster, unannounced strike, or other reasons as cited in the plan.
  • Medical Expense –  Reimburses covered medical expenses incurred in the event you become injured or sick during your trip.
  • Baggage / Personal Effects Protection –  Provides reimbursement in the event your luggage or personal effects are, lost, stolen, damaged or delayed during your trip.
  • Worldwide Emergency Assistance Services –  Provided by CareFree Travel Assistance; 24-hour emergency telephone assistance hotline for medical and travel related problems.

The cost of Tauck's Guest Protection is: $769 per person

This protection provides insurance coverage that applies only during the covered trip. You may have coverage from other sources that provides you with similar benefits but may be subject to different restrictions depending upon your other coverages. You may wish to compare the terms of this policy with your existing life, health, home and automobile policies. If you have any questions about your current coverage, call your insurer, insurance agent or broker.

This optional Guest Protection must be requested at time of booking and fee must be included with initial payment. Fees are based on costs as of July 2021, and are subject to change. Details will be provided with written confirmation of your tour reservation. Guest Protection does not protect travel agent commissions. Reimbursements will be made according to original method of payment. The amount of any refund shall be reduced by any recoveries obtained by you from any third parties.

The Guest Protection plan waives cancellation fees outlined below, provided we are notified of cancellation before your tour departs. Tour cancellation fees are waived regardless of reason, without written notice, and Tauck will refund land tour cost.

To obtain your state-specific Certificate of Insurance that contains the complete terms, conditions, limitations and exclusions of the certificate, visit  affinitytravelcert.com/docs/TACGPPINTL .

If You Have To Cancel

If you cancel within 10 days of initial deposit Within the first 10 days after you place your initial deposit, you may cancel your reservation for any reason with no cancellation fees. If you cancel more than 10 days after initial deposit Regardless of reason, cancellations result in costly charges from our travel and hotel providers covering penalties and fees incurred by canceling confirmed bookings. These fees vary from tour to tour. Therefore, the following fees apply.

Loss of Guest Protection fee, per person

Cancellation Fees without Tauck's Guest Protection Plan :

90 days or more before departure = $600 per person

89-8 days before departure = $1250 per person

7-1 days before departure = $2000 per person

Time of cancellation will be when notice is received in our Wilton Woods, CT office.

Travel Requirements For This Tour

Air Information and Luggage Restrictions

AIRFARE: Airfare to and from this destination is not included in the journey cost. If purchasing your air elsewhere, it is very important to provide us with your confirmed arriving and departing flight information no later than 3 weeks before your arrival date. Flight information can be submitted to Tauck (or verified, if you've already provided it) in the My Account section of Tauck.com.

TAUCK AIRPORT TRANSFERS are included at the start and end of the journey between the airport and the Tauck hotel. Airport transfers are available for any pre tour or post tour hotel stays immediately consecutive to the tour, providing flight information is received in the Tauck office no later than three weeks in advance. Details on locating your transfer upon arrival to the tour start city will be included in your final documents.

AIRLINES and CHECKED LUGGAGE: Due to space limitations during your Tauck journey, we ask that you please limit your checked luggage to one average-size suitcase per person. Besides complying with the Tauck restriction noted above, you should also be sure to research and comply with all airline baggage restrictions relating to your flights to and from your Tauck journey. Airlines have become much more strict in enforcing size and weight limits in recent years, and are free to revise luggage policies without notice. Researching and complying with airline luggage restrictions is the responsibility of the guest, and Tauck cannot be held responsible for any costs or disruptions to travel caused by the failure to research and comply with airline policies. PLEASE NOTE that if you are booked on a tour that includes on-tour flights, the checked luggage weight restrictions for these flights may be lower than the weight restrictions for your international flights.

Checked Luggage – General

Due to space restrictions, we ask that you please limit your checked luggage to one suitcase per person weighing no more than 50 pounds (23 kg) and with overall dimensions (length + width + height) not exceeding 62 inches (158 cm).

Besides complying with the Tauck restriction noted above, you should also be sure to research and comply with all airline baggage restrictions relating to your flights to and from your Tauck journey. Airlines have become much more strict in enforcing size and weight limits in recent years, and luggage exceeding airline standards for size or weight may result in expensive overage fees or other consequences.

Airlines are free to revise luggage policies without notice, and certain airlines have different baggage allowances for different classes of service. Researching and complying with airline luggage restrictions is the responsibility of the guest, and Tauck cannot be held responsible for any costs or disruptions to travel caused by the failure to research and comply with airline policies.

Tauck luggage tags will be provided by your Tauck Director on Day 1 of your itinerary. Please do not attach a Tauck luggage tag to any carry-on items, as the Tauck tags designate luggage that is to be handled and transferred by ground operators and hotel staff during your journey.

Besides the checked luggage limitations noted above, you are allowed to bring one piece of carry-on luggage aboard your intra-tour flights, not to exceed a weight of 11 lbs (5 kg),with overall dimensions (length + width + height) not exceeding 43" (110 cm) due to space restrictions in overhead storage bins aboard the charter flights, motor coaches; larger carry-ons will be stowed in the luggage compartment under the coach.

Carry-on Luggage – General

Although oversize bags and wheeled, carry-on luggage are popular for airline travel, they are often not convenient or appropriate for motor coach travel or for many on-tour flights. Most modern sightseeing motor coaches offer limited space for numerous or larger items. Space under seats or in the overhead rack is typically small, and designed to accommodate items like coats, hats, purses, and small camera bags, etc.

For your day-to-day travel while on tour, we recommend that you limit your hand luggage to a small, soft-sided carry-on piece, and that you bring only those items you need handy during the day such as make-up, medications, cameras, film, etc. Items too large to fit under the motor coach seat or on the overhead rack must be stored in the luggage bays beneath the motor coach, and may be inaccessible during daytime travel.

Health, Safety and Mobility

HEALTH CONSIDERATIONS

Throughout the tour, we will provide you with clean and safe drinking water.

If you have a medical condition that might limit your participation in activities, please consult your physician for pre-departure health advice and notify us as soon as possible, if you have not already done so. We will advise your Tauck Director accordingly.

Please check with your health insurance provider to determine whether you are covered while traveling. If you will not be covered under your current policy, we strongly suggest that you arrange for adequate coverage while on tour.

VACCINATION REQUIREMENTS AND RECOMMENDATIONS

Some of the countries visited on this itinerary may require travelers to provide proof of vaccination against certain diseases in order to enter the country.  These requirements are subject to frequent change as outbreaks occur and subside in different areas, and it is therefore crucial that you obtain the very latest information on entry requirements as you prepare for your journey.

For the most current information, please consult the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) by clicking here  and the World Health Organization (WHO) by clicking here . You may also wish to visit the web sites for the embassies of the countries you will be visiting.  Besides providing details on vaccination requirements, these sites can also provide information on vaccinations that may be recommended (but aren't required) and other potential health issues for which no vaccines are available.

Any decisions relating to your health, of course, should not be based solely on information provided by a web site.  It is critically important that you consult with your personal physician prior to your journey to obtain any required vaccinations and to review any optional recommendations offered by the CDC or other sources.

Please be sure to discuss your journey with your physician at least four to six weeks in advance of your departure, as certain vaccinations take time to become fully effective.  Also, be certain to ask your physician for proof of any vaccinations you receive, and to pack this proof along with your other travel documents in your carry-on luggage (not in your checked luggage).

Researching and complying with vaccination entry requirements for the countries visited on this itinerary is the responsibility of the traveler and not Tauck. Tauck is therefore not responsible for any expenses incurred or disruptions to travel caused by improper or incomplete vaccinations, or by the failure to provide proof of required vaccinations.

If you do not obtain the necessary vaccinations and proper documentation, you may be denied entry into one or more countries, or temporarily quarantined until the necessary vaccinations are administered, or until proper documentation is provided.

SPECIAL DIETARY REQUESTS

The restaurants, hotels, caterers and numerous other partners we work with all do their best to accommodate special dietary requests from Tauck guests. However, given the diverse nature of those food providers (from small wineries to grand hotels to world-famous restaurants in more than 70 countries worldwide), some of our partners are better able than others to accommodate such requests. We therefore cannot guarantee that all dietary requests can be accommodated at every meal. Also, please note that where dietary requests can be accommodated, choices will frequently be limited.

Jordan and Egypt: Petra to Pyramids is an active tour. You should be in good health, able to climb into and out of a small boat and walk reasonable distances over unpaved and uneven terrain. Many of our walking excursions are in and around ancient sites and old city quarters. The amount of walking you do, however, is at your discretion.

PLEASE NOTE:  We regret that this Tauck itinerary cannot accommodate wheelchairs or motorized scooters.  Likewise, we regret that we're unable to provide individual assistance to guests with walking difficulties or other personal needs.  The responsibility of the Tauck Director who accompanies your trip is to ensure that the larger group enjoys a relaxing and informative journey, and he or she cannot be relied upon to provide ongoing individual assistance to any one guest. Guests requiring such individualized assistance must be accompanied by an able-bodied companion who can provide it.

Reading List

We have compiled a reading list of recommended books to give you more information about the destinations you will be traveling to on your upcoming journey!

You can view the reading list  here.

Jordan is approximately 90% desert, with an annual rainfall below 8 in (203 mm) and falling as low as 1-2 in (25-50 mm) in some places. Jordan is a very sunny country with average daily sunshine hours ranging from six to seven hours per day in winter and as many as twelve to thirteen hours per day in the summer. Although summer temperatures are high in the desert, the heat is usually moderated by low humidity and a stiff daytime breeze while the nights are cool and pleasant. You should expect hot and dry summers with cool evenings.

Egypt essentially has a hot desert climate. The climate is generally extremely dry all over the country except on the northern Mediterranean coast which receives rainfall in winter. In addition to rarity of rain, extreme heat during summer months is also a general climate feature of Egypt although daytime temperatures are more moderated along the northern coast. The prevailing northwesterly wind from the Mediterranean Sea continuously blows over the northern coast without the interposition of an eventual mountain range and thus, greatly moderates temperatures throughout the year. Because of the effect, average low temperatures vary from 9.5 °C (49.1 °F) in wintertime to 23 °C (73.4 °F) in summertime and average high temperatures vary from 17 °C (62.6 °F) in wintertime to 32 °C (89.6 °F) in summertime. Though temperatures are moderated along the coasts, the situation changes in the interior, which are away from the moderating northerly winds. Thus, in the central and the southern parts, daytime temperatures are hotter, especially in summers where average high temperatures can exceed 40 °C (104 °F) like in Aswan , Luxor , Asyut or Sohag which are located in the deserts of Egypt.

To determine current weather conditions, we suggest you log on to the Internet website, noaa.gov, by clicking here.

What To Pack

Your journey through Israel and Jordan is casual. Comfortable, cotton clothing is suggested. Dress for comfort and convenience with a wardrobe that is adaptable and allows for layering. Please be aware that some of the sights we visit, require both men and women to have their knees and shoulders covered, and in some cases wear long pants. Once on tour, your tour director will advise you on appropriate attire.

For travel December through February, you will need a hat, gloves and warm clothes for our travels in Petra in Jordan. Also at this time, the temperatures in Egypt are still hot, so be sure to pack lightweight clothes for touring in the desert. For travel from March through May and August through December, you will need a jacket or fleece, a light sweater for the air conditioning on the planes and coaches. You might consider a small umbrella, not for rain, but for the sun. At the Sofitel Hotel in the 1902 restaurant, gentlemen are required to wear a jacket and ladies should wear cocktail attire. The hotel does loan jackets to guests.  Sandals are acceptable for ladies to wear, however not for men.

Most importantly, bring comfortable yet sturdy walking shoes that have already been broken-in. It is important that your shoes have good ankle support, as we visit some ancient sites where paths and stairs may be uneven and unpaved.  Open-toed shoes and flip flops are not recommended for visits to Petra and most of the Egyptian sites due to the sand and the rocky walking conditions.

Jordan and Egypt are primarily Muslim countries, although the freedom of all religions is protected. Muslim women's clothing often covers their arms, legs and hair. Western women are not subject to these customs, but very revealing clothing is never appropriate and conservative dress is advisable for both men and women in the old part of Amman (downtown), and outside the cities. Shorts are rarely worn by either gender, and would be out of place in the downtown Amman area. Topless sunbathing is prohibited and one-piece swimsuits are preferred, although two-piece swimsuits are acceptable at hotel pools.

Valet laundry services are available at all the hotels.

Beyond your normal wardrobe and personal grooming items, we suggest you also bring along:

  • Comfortable walking shoes (VERY IMPORTANT)
  • Rainwear, such as a raincoat and rain hat, plus a collapsible umbrella
  • Short and long-sleeved shirts/tee shirts (for the warmer, summer months. Extra tee shirts are always a good idea). Please make sure you have your shoulders covered for monuments. Jacket for men  and cocktail dress and slacks/dress for women for evening wear
  • Long shorts and pants (many of the sights require both men and women to have-shorts that cover their knees and in some cases require you to wear long pants)
  • Sweater; lightweight for summer, and medium weight for spring/fall
  • Camera, lenses, batteries, chargers and extra memory cards
  • Sunscreen and hat
  • Small flashlight
  • Insect repellent
  • Travel alarm clock (many hotels do not have clocks in the rooms)
  • Copies of your prescriptions from your doctor. While it may be possible to refill prescriptions during your journey, the availability of refills cannot be guaranteed. What's more, refilling prescriptions in foreign countries can be difficult and time-consuming.

Please refer to the Necessary Gear website at  www.necessarygear.com  as one option available to you for renting and purchasing apparel, PPEs, and other items appropriate for your journey.

Explore Egypt & Jordan

19 days | discover ancient cities and warming hospitality in the middle east.

Group and tour leader in front of Petra ruins

From the ‘Land of the Pharaohs’ to the buoyant waters of the Dead Sea, this immersive 19-day tour through Egypt and Jordan is awash with highlights. Lose yourself in sun-kissed Cairo, be dazzled by the grandeur of ancient Egypt, cruise down the iconic Nile River, and explore the fascinating cities of Alexandria, Aswan and Luxor. Fly to Jordan and discover the sweeping desert and echoing formations of Wadi Rum, the hand-hewn facades of Petra and the ancient Roman ruins at Jerash. This is a Middle Eastern odyssey to remember.

Trip overview

  • You’ll never forget your first glimpse of The Treasury in Petra. Spend a day taking in the majesty and mystery of this unforgettable place on a guided tour then enjoy free time to explore.
  • Set sail down the Nile – one of the world’s most iconic rivers. Relax in comfort as scenes of everyday Egyptian life stream by and experience day turn to night from your sundeck.
  • Experience the unique sensation of floating in the super-salty waters of the Dead Sea, then cover yourself in the mineral-rich mud for a spa treatment like no other.
  • Explore the magnificent temples at Abu Simbel and see the four gargantuan statues of Ramses guarding the Great Temple, carved directly out of the mountain on the west bank of the Nile.
  • Meet Bedouin locals, learn about their ways, and sleep under the stars in a desert camp in the far-out destination of Wadi Rum.
  • Cairo is notorious for road congestion and air pollution. Be prepared for one of the busiest cities in North Africa.
  • The walkways around ruins can be uneven, dusty and rocky, so be sure to bring sturdy, comfortable walking shoes. At major sites such as the Pyramids, you can expect to be exposed to the elements at length, so be prepared with a hat, sunscreen and plenty of fluids.
  • The Middle East can get hot between June and September, but this is normally a dry heat and easier to cope with than humidity. Where possible we try and visit sites in the early morning before it gets too hot.
  • Accommodation aboard the overnight train is in two-berth cabins, which are comfortable and air-conditioned. All bedding is provided, and western-style toilets are located in each carriage. General train cleanliness may not be to the same standards you are accustomed to. An included dinner and breakfast are served on board. You may want to purchase something extra beforehand to supplement your meal, particularly if you have any dietary requirements.
  • The Nile Cruise includes three nights’ accommodation and full board (drinks are not included). Your ship will be docked each night in Aswan, Edfu or Luxor – please see the Itinerary for more details. When docked, Nile cruise ships are moored lengthways alongside each other, and your ship will most likely have a ship on either side. You walk through the other ships to reach the port.
  • In Wadi Rum we stay in a permanent tented camp with shared bathroom facilities. While the desert may be very hot during the day, it will still be cold at night and warm clothes are highly recommended when travelling outside of the summer months.
  • Ramadan is an annual month-long festival, during which travel can be a rewarding cultural experience, however some regular services may not be available during the day, such as restaurants or cafes, and occasionally travel can be disrupted by events. Your leader will adjust the itinerary accordingly, but please consider this when selecting your travel dates. You'll find dates and further information in the 'Climate and seasonal information' section of the Essential Trip Information.

Salaam Aleikum! Welcome to Egypt. You'll be met on arrival at Cairo International Airport and transferred to your hotel, before your Egyptian adventure begins with an important welcome meeting at 6 pm this evening. Cairo is one of the great cities of antiquity and its history can be symbolised by two imposing landmarks – the Pyramids of Giza and the Sphinx. If you have some time spare, perhaps get out and explore the busy city streets or visit the Cairo Citadel which dates back to 1176 and is home to multiple museums and mosques.

  • Hotel (1 night)

There are no meals included on this day.

  • Complimentary Arrival Transfer
  • Cairo - Coptic Museum (entrance fee) - EGP230
  • Cairo - Islamic Art Museum (entrance fee) - EGP270
  • Cairo - Urban Adventures Downtown Cairo Tour - USD40
  • Cairo - The Citadel (entrance fee) - EGP450
  • Cairo - Saqqara and Memphis Afternoon Tour (minimum 2 persons) (entrance, guide & transport) - USD109

It’s very important that you attend the welcome meeting as we will be collecting insurance details and next of kin information at this time. If you are going to be late please let your travel agent or hotel reception know. Ask reception or look for a note in the lobby for more information on where the meeting will take place.

The arrival transfer is only valid if arriving on Day 1 or if you have booked pre-trip accommodation through Intrepid. Please provide your flight details at the time of booking, or at a minimum 14 days prior to travel, as we may not be able to confirm a request made within 14 days of travel.

This morning after breakfast you’ll see two of the world’s most iconic sights – the Pyramids of Giza and the Sphinx. Explore these structures which have stood tall for over 4500 years, and for an additional charge, you may be able to go inside the Great Pyramid of Khufu, although occasionally it’s closed to visitors. Afterwards, your adventure continues to the Egyptian Museum, home to one of the world's great collections of ancient artefacts. The masses of gleaming artefacts recovered from the tomb of Tutankhamun are an impressive sight – from jewellery to the famous golden death mask and his gilded sarcophagi, this pharaoh was certainly prepared for the afterlife.

  • Cairo - Pyramids of Giza and the Sphinx
  • Cairo - Egyptian Museum
  • Cairo - The Great Pyramid of Cheops (entrance fee) - EGP900
  • Cairo - The 3rd Pyramid of Menkawre (entrance fee) - EGP220
  • Cairo - Sound & Light Show at the Pyramids Tour (minimum 2 persons) (entrance, guide & transport) - USD55

You'll be required to walk around the Pyramids complex. It can be very hot in the summer months, so be prepared for little shade and pack appropriate clothing, sun protection, and carry lots of water.

The inside thoroughfares of the Pyramids of Giza are very small and very warm, so for those suffering from claustrophobia, it is not recommended.

Jump in a private van today and drive to the Mediterranean coastal city of Alexandria. Egypt's second-largest city and main port, locals call this vibrant city the Bride of the Mediterranean Sea. The Greek architect Dinocrates built Alexandria in 331 BC under the orders of Alexander the Great. The city, immortalising Alexander's name, quickly flourished into a prominent cultural, intellectual, political and economic metropolis. On arrival, head underground and delve into the mysteries of the Kom ash-Shuqqafa catacombs. This Roman burial site is the largest of its kind in Egypt. The crypts are 20 metres below street level, and what probably began as a small family tomb grew into a labyrinth of chambers that could accommodate more than 300 bodies. Afterwards, stop by the strikingly modern Bibliotheca Alexandrina, inspired by the original great library of Alexandria and built to hold over eight million books. Take some time to stroll along the Corniche and around Fort Qaitbey and enjoy the fresh Mediterranean air.

  • Alexandria - Catacombs of Kom el Shoqafa
  • Alexandria - Bibliotheca Alexandrina
  • Alexandria - Fort Qaitbey
  • Alexandria - Alexandria National Museum (entrance fee) - EGP180

Today’s driving time is approximately 3 hours.

This morning, pay a visit to Wadi El Natron, a place used by the ancient Egyptians and Romans for extracting precious resources like salt, silica for making glass and carbonated sodium which was essential for the mummification process. Learn about the history of this fascinating place, view the lakes and soak up the surroundings before returning by private van to Cairo. Take some time to relax or get some snacks before you board an overnight sleeper train to Aswan.

  • Overnight Sleeper Train (1 night)
  • Alexandria - Wadi El Natron monasteries

Today’s driving time is approximately 3 hours. The train journey from Cairo to Aswan departs around 8pm and takes approximately 13 hours.

Accommodation aboard the overnight train is in two-berth cabins, which are comfortable and air-conditioned. All bedding is provided, and western-style toilets are located in each carriage. We recommend bringing additional toilet paper. General train cleanliness may not be to the same standards you are accustomed to. An included dinner and breakfast are served on board. You may want to purchase something extra beforehand to supplement your meal, particularly if you have any dietary requirements.

In rare circumstances you may be paired in your cabin with a group member of the opposite gender, depending on the group configuration. On other occasions, you might be sharing with another traveller of the same gender who may not be part of our group, again determined by the group configuration.

The Nile, Elephantine Island and white-sailed feluccas. You’ll pull into Aswan – Egypt's southernmost city – at around 9am. Its easy-going charm is due in no small part to its large Nubian population. When you arrive, you’ll explore the beautiful Temple of Isis (the Goddess of health, marriage and wisdom), which was rescued from the rising waters of the Nile and relocated on Philae Island. It's a marvel of decorative pylons featuring some of Egypt's finest carvings – definitely one of the gems of Upper Egypt. This afternoon is yours to explore your way. You might choose to visit the excellent Nubian Museum, which showcases the history, art and culture of the Nubians. This evening you’ll experience modern Nubian culture firsthand with a visit to a nearby village. Join a local Nubian family for a memorable dinner where you’ll get to sample traditional dishes like okra stew or tagen, a tasty tomato-based tagen dish, with sanasel bread to mop up the delicious sauces.

  • Aswan - Nubian Village Visit and Dinner
  • Aswan - Philae Temple
  • Aswan - Nubian Museum (entrance fee) - EGP300
  • Aswan - Tomb of the Nobles (entrance fee) - EGP150
  • Aswan - High Dam and Unfinished Obelisk Tour (minimum 2 persons) (entrance, guide & transport) - USD35
  • Aswan - Philae Temple Sound & Light Show Tour (minimum 2 persons) (entrance, guide & transport) - USD55

This morning, make the drive from Aswan to Abu Simbel where you’ll explore some magnificent temples. Built by Ramses II, it was the gateway to Egypt for Southern Africans and its imposing facade clearly delineated the line between what was the Pharaoh's land and what was not. With the four gargantuan statues of Ramses guarding the Great Temple, carved directly out of the mountain on the west bank of the Nile, this is one of Egypt's most memorable sights. You'll have two hours to explore Abu Simbel before making the drive back to Aswan, where you’ll board your Nile cruise boat. Late in the afternoon, enjoy a leisurely sailing trip on a traditional felucca before dinner on the ship.

  • Cruise Boat (1 night)
  • Abu Simbel - Abu Simbel temples
  • Aswan - Felucca Sail

Today’s driving time is approximately 6 hours.

Tonight, your boat will be docked in Aswan.

Nile cruise boats are typically very large with a passenger capacity of around 150. All cabins have private facilities and the boat is fully air-conditioned. All meals are included onboard, but you will need to pay for drinks.

Although we use the best possible five-star rated cruise boats available, the local equivalent of five stars isn't the same standard that you might expect at home. Nile cruise boats are not luxurious, but they are very comfortable and a great way to experience the Nile. Due to varying schedules, we are not able to provide advance notice of which exact boat you’ll be sailing on.

Enjoy a free morning in Aswan, perhaps enjoying coffee and exploration of the bazaar during the morning bustle. After lunch on board your ship, you’ll set sail for your first stop – Kom Ombo. This second century BC complex is unique because it has a mirror-image design, divided down the middle, with either side dedicated to a different set of gods. One half is known as the Temple of Sobek (the crocodile-headed god of fertility) and the other half is dedicated to Haroeris (also known as Horus the falcon god), and the whole temple is full of fascinating reliefs. Afterwards, return to the boat and travel upriver, with free time relaxing on the sundeck and taking in the surrounding sights – desert hills forming a backdrop to lush riverbanks, fishermen casting their nets and farmers working their land. Enjoy dinner on board, before your ship docks in Edfu late in the night.

  • Izbat Al Bayyarah - Kom Ombo Temple

Tonight, your boat will be docked in Edfu.

This morning finds you moored near Edfu – a beautifully preserved temple also dedicated to Horus, the falcon-headed god. After breakfast on board, your ship will sail onwards to Luxor, passing through the Esna Locks. Ships often have to queue to proceed through the locks, a great opportunity to check out the process from deck with a cool drink in hand, listening to the shouts of the many captains as they navigate their way through the various small boats of merchants selling their wares to a captive audience. On arrival in Luxor, join your leader for an orientation walk of the town. You have the option to visit Luxor Temple, which looks incredible, lit up at night. Return to the ship for dinner and your last night on board.

  • Edfu - Edfu Temple (entrance fee) - EGP450
  • Luxor - Luxor Temple (entrance fee) - EGP400

Tonight, your boat will be docked in Luxor.

We do not include a visit to Edfu Temple as the only mode of transport there is through locally managed horse and carriages, the operators of which have been found to be in breach of our animal welfare guidelines. We have also received feedback that the experience itself is quite uncomfortable due to the nature of the vendors and local suppliers outside the site. Edfu is an included port stop on the Nile River cruise schedule. The duration of the walk is about 30 mins each way, along a busy road. Please inform your Leader if you will be leaving the boat to visit Edfu.

Your Nile cruise comes to an end in the open-air museum of Luxor. From the spectacular temple complex of Karnak to the Valley of the Kings, Luxor is full of wonderfully preserved reminders of the Pharaohs. After breakfast, depart the ship and drop your bags at your hotel in Luxor. From here, you’ll set off with your leader to explore Karnak Temple which is perhaps the most impressive of all the ancient Pharaoh’s monumental works. One of the world's most celebrated temple complexes, Karnak is a house of the gods built over a period of some 200 years. Your guided tour of this vast temple of impressive pylons, obelisks and chapels will reveal its finest sections, such as the Avenue of Sphinxes and the Great Temple of Amun. The rest of the day is free for you to relax, shop in the excellent bazaar (open until quite late) or perhaps experience the atmosphere of a local teahouse.

  • Luxor - Karnak Temple (entrance fee)
  • Luxor - Luxor Museum (entrance fee) - EGP300
  • Luxor - Mummification Museum (entrance fee) - EGP200
  • Luxor - Karnak Temple Sound and Light Show (minimum 2 persons) (entrance, guide & transport) - USD45

Today you’ll hop in a private minivan and discover ancient Thebes. Your first stop is the Colossi of Memnon – two 17-metre-high statues on Luxor's west bank. Continue on to the Valley of the Kings. Buried under the arid hills here are over 60 tombs of pharaohs, many richly decorated with reliefs and paintings. With your leader, explore this place, where the pharaohs of the New Kingdom (16th to 11th century BC) were secretly interred for all eternity, and where discoveries are still being made. Your group leader will explain the history and legends of these remarkable people, and the significance of the many paintings and hieroglyphics, still well preserved in the deepest tombs. You will visit three of the royal tombs, including Tutankhamun’s tomb where Tutankhamun is buried, then continue to the Temple of Queen Hatshepsut – a colonnaded building set against high cliffs that create a spectacular natural amphitheatre. The afternoon is yours to explore – perhaps you'd like to shop in the market or visit the world's first Mummification Museum where you can discover the secrets of pharaonic preservation.

  • Luxor - Colossi of Memnon
  • Luxor - Valley of the Kings (entrance to 3 tombs)
  • Luxor - Tomb of Tutankhamun
  • Luxor - Hatshepsut Temple
  • Luxor - Valley of the Queens (entrance fee) - EGP180
  • Luxor - Medinat Habu Temple (entrance fee) - EGP200
  • Luxor - Deir el Madina -Entry Fee - EGP200
  • Luxor - Tomb of Queen Nefertari in the Valley of the Queens (entrance fee) - EGP2000
  • Luxor - Hot Air Balloon over the Valley of the Kings - USD130

It is possible to do a hot air balloon ride over the Valley of the Kings and the Temples of Antiquities on the West Bank. Your Leader can reserve this service for you. We use Dream Balloons in Luxor. Pick up will be from your hotel between 0430 and 0500; balloon capacity is 16-25; cameras are prohibited in the basket but phones are allowed. Activity is subject to weather conditions. Payment by card is possible and will attract a 3% bank service fee.

After breakfast, check out of your hotel and catch a short flight back to Cairo. On your return to the capital, visit the Islamic parts of the city and the frenetic backstreets of the bazaar with your leader. A labyrinth of narrow streets and passageways, Khan is one of the biggest and oldest markets in the world. The 'Khan', sprawling around an old area known as Al-Azhar, is a quintessentially Cairo experience – a warren of alleys with stalls serving up a succession of intoxicating scenes. You might explore the gold market, ‘Perfume Street’ and the spice market, where heady aromas fill the air, or make a purchase next door in the cloth market. Or you could visit atmospheric El Fishawy, one of Cairo’s oldest cafes, and discover why it’s been operating for more than 200 years. Tonight, perhaps gather together your fellow travellers for a celebratory kebab, kofta, sheesha, or all three.

  • Cairo - Khan al-Khalili bazaar visit

Today’s travel time is approximately 2 hours.

This morning take a short flight from Cairo to Amman. You will be unescorted on this flight. On arrival at Queen Alia International Airport, you will be met by an Intrepid representative and transferred to your hotel, ready for your adventure to begin at 6 pm with a welcome meeting for the next stage of your trip. If you arrive early, feel free to head out and explore – highlights include the citadel with its amazing sweeping views of Amman, the Jordan Museum, which is home to the Dead Sea Scrolls, or the Roman Theatre, right in the middle of downtown Amman. After the meeting, you may like to get to know your group over an optional dinner, or explore on your own and pick up a coffee from one of the cafes, partnering it with an ara’yes – a toasted sandwich filled with spicy mincemeat.

As this is a combination trip, your group leader and the composition of your group may change at this location.

After breakfast today, journey down the Desert Highway to the spellbinding Wadi Rum, a landscape of rugged sandstone mountains standing tall among an ochre desert floor. Meet your Bedouin hosts on arrival followed by free time for lunch, before heading into this desolate, romantic area. Transport into the Rum is by way of jeeps operated by the local Bedouin community, part of an initiative by the Jordanian Government to bring much-needed income into this region. Visit several of Wadi Rum's distinctive rock formations and soak in the vast silence and spectacular desert landscapes. The Bedouins live in scattered camps throughout the area and you'll enjoy an evening under the stars at one of these sites.

  • Desert Camp (1 night)
  • Wadi Rum - Desert Jeep tour

Today’s total travel time is approximately 4.5 hours.

Enjoy a spectacular sunrise at your desert camp, perhaps checking out a few more of the local Wadi Rum sites or taking a scenic walk before you leave. Depart Wadi Rum mid-morning for the city of Aqaba on the Red Sea. Check into your hotel on arrival and head out for a brief orientation of the town with your leader – the small Ottoman Mamluk Fort, dating from the 14th century and from where Lawrence of Arabia rode to Cairo, is worth a look – otherwise, most of the fun is to be found in the water. With great visibility and abundant marine life, this is an incredible spot for snorkelling, and the warm waters play host to clownfish, angelfish, sea turtles and coral formations. Speak to your leader if you’d like to arrange snorkelling, or you may prefer to acquaint yourself with the hotel's pool or head to the beach.

Today’s total travel time is approximately 1 hour.

This morning, enjoy some relaxation time in Aqaba before travelling to the fabled city of Petra. Dating back to the sixth century BC, Petra is considered the crown jewel of Jordan, featuring an impressive series of tombs and dwellings carved directly into the rock. The site remained unknown to the wider world until 1812 when it was visited by Swiss explorer Johann Ludwig Burckhardt. In 1985, Petra was designated a UNESCO World Heritage-listed site, and simply put, is one of the world’s most incredible ancient sites. On arrival, settle into your hotel and check out the village before enjoying an included dinner at your hotel.

Today’s total travel time is approximately 3 hours.

Petra is justifiably on most people’s list of ‘must-visit’ places. The iconic Petra view – the Treasury's glorious facade, glimpsed from the narrow cleft known as the Siq – is arguably the single most striking sight of the entire region. The Siq leads through the rock and is sometimes only a few metres wide, with walls soaring up to 180 metres on either side. Join your guide and explore the old Roman road, amphitheatre and several old tombs, before enjoying free time to experience Petra at your own pace. Maybe climb up to the Monastery, carved from a mountain summit, where you’ll find magnificent views of the entire site. To cap off a truly memorable day, be welcomed into a local home for dinner. On the menu will often be maqluba – a casserole with rice, vegetables and chicken which is cooked, flipped, then served with either yoghurt or an Arab salad with tahina sauce. Chat to your friendly family hosts about the delicious meal and what life is like in such a popular spot.

  • Petra - Guided tour
  • Petra - Home-cooked meal

After breakfast, drive to the ancient Crusader castle at Shobak, where your leader will show you the grounds, a small chapel and the original gatehouse. This ancient castle was originally built to protect the eastern flank of the Latin Kingdom and its trade routes to the sea before it fell to Saladin in 1189. Depart the castle and stop off at the viewpoint overlooking the Dana Nature Reserve before arriving in Madaba where you’ll visit the Greek Orthodox Church of St. George and see an impressive ancient mosaic map of the Holy Land. Arrive in Amman in the late afternoon, where your leader will recommend some great restaurants to sample the best of the city’s food scene.

  • Shobak - Shobak Castle
  • Madaba - St Georges Church

Take a short drive north to Jerash, once one of the grandest ancient Roman cities in the world and now home to some of the best Greco-Roman ruins around. Jerash has a striking collection of archways, theatres, baths, public buildings and colonnaded streets, and is a beautiful place to spend a morning exploring. Then, drive to the shores of the Dead Sea, the lowest point on Earth (420 metres below sea level). This isn’t actually a sea, but rather a super-salty lake (dead because of the lack of life in it) where the density of the water means you’ll go for a float, not a swim. The mud here is supposed to have healing properties, so why not cover yourself from head to toe for a nutrient-rich natural mineral mud bath. Spend some time relaxing here before returning to Amman for the evening. Maybe spend tonight at one of the many bars and restaurants in West Amman or ask your leader about the traditional cafes dotted around the city where locals spend their evenings.

  • Jerash - Roman ruins

You’ll also enjoy an opportunity to see the Sphinx and the Valley Temple.

After your trip to the pyramids, you will be taken for some lunch at a good quality local restaurant in Cairo. Lunch is included in your trip today.

Once you have finished enjoying your meal, you will then head to the Egyptian Museum which is the next stop on the itinerary. You will have ample time to explore this world-famous museum with your Expert guide by your side.

After you have finished exploring the museum, you will then head to Islamic Cairo to visit the bustling Khan el Khalili Bazaar. This is Egypt’s oldest, biggest, and most famous bazaar. Once you are finished shopping and/or exploring, you will be transferred to your hotel in Cairo for the night. You can either relax at your hotel, or you can go out and explore your surroundings on foot.

Day 3: Luxor Nile Cruise Holiday

On day 3 of your Nile Cruise and Jordan vacation you will enjoy breakfast at your hotel, and then at the appropriate time your will check-out and you will make your way to Cairo Airport to board a flight to Luxor.

When you land in Luxor, you will again be met at the airport, and then you will be taken to board your 5-Star Nile cruise ship for an unforgettable journey on the Nile. Your cruise ship will be like a floating hotel and it will be your home for the next 4 nights of your trip.

Enjoy a good lunch aboard ship shortly after boarding and then a bit later in the afternoon you will visit the East Bank of Luxor to see the Karnak Temple complex as well as Luxor Temple with its avenue of Ram Headed Sphinxes. Karnak Temple is the second-most visited ancient temple in the country

After your East Bank trip you will head back to the cruise ship and you will have the remainder of the day to yourself to enjoy as you please. Enjoy a lovely dinner in the evening, and spend the first night of your cruise on the Nile at Luxor.

Meals Included: Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner

Day 4: Luxor West Bank Tour

Enjoy breakfast on the cruise boat and then you will make your way to the West Bank to see four amazing ancient monuments: the Valley of the Kings, the Valley of the Queens, Queen Hatshepsut’s Mortuary Temple, and the Colossi of Memnon.

All four of these sites are immensely popular among travelers, and for good reason. For example, the Valley of Kings necropolis is home to more than 60 ancient tombs, many of which belonged to some of Egypt’s most powerful rulers. It is also home to the tomb of King Tutankhamun.

Admission to some of the tombs is included in the price of our travel package. However, tickets for some of the tombs must be purchased in person. These are of course available at the site. The mortuary temple of Queen Hatshepsut is another absolutely breathtaking site and it is considered to be one of the “Incomparable Monuments of Ancient Egypt. It is by far the grandest ancient temple in the country.

After your West Bank trip, you will make your way back to your cruise ship in time for lunch. There are no other sightseeing trips scheduled for today. Enjoy the afternoon and evening as you please. Dinner will be served at the usual time, and this night of your cruise will once again be spent on the Nile at Luxor.

Day 5: Sightseeing Cruise from Luxor to Kom Ombo

Enjoy a delightful breakfast on the cruise ship and then sail down the Nile to Edfu. When you get to Edfu your guide will take you for a short sightseeing trip to visit Edfu Temple which is also known as the Temple of Horus. This is the best-preserved ancient temple ever discovered in the country. It is also one of the biggest ancient Egyptian temples ever built.

After your trip to the temple, you will return to the cruise boat and it will continue its journey along the Nile until it reaches Kom Ombo where it will anchor for the night. You will once again dine and sleep aboard the ship, this time on the quiet waters of the Nile at Kom Ombo.

Day 6: Kom Ombo and Aswan Sightseeing

Enjoy breakfast on the ship and then your guide will take you to visit the Greco-Roman Kom Ombo Temple. This is believed to be the only twin temple ever built. It was devoted to two different gods: Sobek the crocodile god and Horus the falcon-headed god. After your visit to the temple, you will return to your cruise ship and it will begin sailing to Aswan.

When you reach Aswan, you will be taken ashore for a short but very enjoyable excursion. During this trip you will visit the incomparable Temple of Philae. Philae Temple was relocated in entirety to its current location in order to save it from the flooding of Lake Nasser when the High Dam was being built. After your trip, you will return to the cruise ship and you will have the remainder of the afternoon and evening to yourself.

Enjoy another fine dinner aboard the cruise ship, and enjoy the final night of your cruise on the quiet waters of the Nile at Aswan

Day 7: Return Trip to Cairo

Enjoy one last breakfast aboard the ship and ten it will soon be time for you to check-out and disembark from your cruise. At the appropriate time our travel representative and a driver will then transfer you to Aswan Airport where you will board a flight back to Cairo.

When you land in Cairo, your tour manager and a driver will meet you at Cairo Airport and you will be driven to your Cairo hotel for your last night in the Land of the Pharaohs.

Meals Included: Breakfast

Day 8: Travel for Cairo to Amman in Jordan

After enjoying breakfast at your hotel, one of our travel representatives and a driver will collect you at the appropriate time and then transfer you to Cairo International Airport, so you can board your flight to Amman in Jordan. When you arrive at the Queen Alia Airport in Amman, you will be met by one of our Jordan travel representatives who will then escort you to your hotel in Amman where you will be staying for the duration of your trip in Jordan.

Day 9: Umm Qais, Jerash and Ajloun Caste Trip

After breakfast in the morning, you will travel for about 2 hours from Amman to Gadara (Umm Qais), which was once a part of a decapolis that was founded by Alexander the Great in antiquity. Apart from the site itself, you will also be able to enjoy stunning views of the Jordan Valley, as well as the Sea of Galilee and the Golan Heights.

After your visit to Umm Qais, you will then travel to Jerash. Here you will meet up with a specialist guide who will give a guided to of the remains of an ancient Roman provincial town. You will get to see the Nymphaeum, the Temple of Artemis and more. This is one of the most visited attractions in Jordan. Next, you will travel to Ajloun Castle, a 12th century Islamic castle that was built by Salah El Din.

Finally, after a full day of sightseeing, you will travel back to your hotel in Amman for the night. Rather than settling for dinner at your hotel, we highly recommend having dinner at a local restaurant in Amman. Jordan is well known for its cuisine, and Amman is full of good restaurants serving excellent food at very affordable prices.

Day 10: Mount Nebo, Madaba and Dead Sea Trip

Begin the 10th day of your Nile cruise and Jordan holiday with a good hotel breakfast, and then at the confirmed time, you will be picked up from your hotel and you will travel to Mount Nebo, the place from which Moses descried the Promised Land. You will also visit an ancient monastery and enjoy a spectacular view of the Jordan Valley and the Dead Sea.

Next, you will travel to the town of Madaba for some sightseeing, after which you will travel on to the Dead Sea, the lowest spot on earth. Here you will have the chance to splash and float in the salty waters for the Dead Sea is so famous. After a relaxing afternoon at the Dead Sea, you will then travel back to Amman for the night.

Day 11: Half Day Trip to Petra

You will have breakfast at your hotel and then you will be picked up and you will travel to Petra which is about a 2-hour drive from Amman. Once your reach Petra you will make your way directly to the biggest and most famous attraction in Jordan, the Rose Red City of Petra which is also known as the Lost City of Petra. No trip to Jordan is complete without a visit to Petra

When you arrive at the Visitor Center, you will meet up with a specialist English-speaking Petra guide. You will then ride on horseback to the canyon entrance the (Siq). Once you arrive at the Siq, you will proceed on foot to the Treasury. You will also visit the Royal Tombs, the Pharaoh’s Castle, the Street of Facades and the Roman Amphitheatre. All of these amazing structures were carved out of the walls of a long, deep and sometimes narrow rock gorge.

No amount of words can truly describe the absolute magnificence of Petra. It is the sort of place that can only be fully appreciated when you visit it in person. The canyon in which Petra was created is roughly one kilometer long so we strongly recommend that you wear comfortable shoes for this trip.

After your visit at Petra, you will have some lunch (included) and a good local restaurant, and then you will travel back to your hotel in Amman. Since this is your last night in Jordan, why not head out in the evening for some dinner or to do a bit of last minute shopping.

Day 12: Final Departure

Day 12 is the only day of your Nile cruise and Jordan vacation that you’ve probably been dreading. Unfortunately this is where your magical journey trip history comes to an end.

What to Know About Travel to Egypt, Jordan, and Lebanon

The israel-hamas war has affected tourism in neighboring middle eastern countries. local tour operators and travel companies report on the current conditions on the ground..

Pia Abboud’s tour business, Discovery Beyond Borders , was already hurting after a trifecta of crises hit her native Lebanon. “Worldwide we had COVID, but in Lebanon, we also had the economic crisis , the Beirut explosion [in 2020], and now the war [in] Gaza and Palestine, which is affecting the south of Lebanon and the region in general,” she said via WhatsApp.

Abboud hasn’t led any tours since October 7, when the war between Israel and Hamas began . Seven months in, she isn’t sure how long she’ll be able to stay in business. “How resilient should we be? Every year there is another surprise that hits, and each time we think it can’t get any worse, and yet it does,” she said.

Jordanian guide Ahmad Alomari had just gotten home from a hiking-guide training in Utah and Wyoming when the war started. What was expected to be a busy high season amounted to cancellation after cancellation. Alomari said he’s seen a 90 percent drop in bookings compared to 2022. “I was thinking of selling my farm and investing out[side] of tourism, but at the same time, everything in Jordan is impacted, and no one is interested in buying,” he said.

Basem Salah, co-founder of Great Wonders of Egypt Travel , has also seen his bookings plummet since October. “The Gaza conflict has affected our cultural as well as beach tourism badly,” said Salah. In all three countries bordering Israel, the war is having a ripple effect on an important pillar of their economies: tourism.

Tourism had been on the rise

When the war began, Lebanon was still coping with one of the worst economic crises since the mid-19th century , which was brought on by a confluence of factors, including mounting debt, political instability, and financial mismanagement. But things had been improving in summer 2023 thanks in part to a “ tourism boom .” A couple of months later, visitors stopped coming, and the World Bank predicted that Lebanon’s economy could reverse into further recession .

Egypt was also seeing travel pick up. After its economy suffered from a spike in grain prices related to the Russian invasion of Ukraine, 2023 was one of the country’s best years for tourism on record, the government said, though visitor numbers aren’t as high as predicted and aren’t expected to return until U.S. and European travelers do.

Jordan’s tourism industry was skyrocketing in 2023 as well, but in November, travelers from the United States dropped by 90 percent, and British, French, Italian, German, and Spanish visitors all but stopped coming as well. According to Hakim Al-Tamimi, Jordan tourism board’s representative for Western Europe and adventure travel, 4,531 Spanish travelers came to Jordan in September 2023, while just 747 visited the country in February 2024. The decline in visitors is especially significant for an economy like Jordan’s, which receives 14.6 percent of its gross domestic product from tourism (for context, the United States reached 2.9 percent in 2023 ).

Tour operators and hotels have had to lay off staff, leaving workers with few options for employment in Jordan’s fragile economy. “A lot of the things that, with all due respect, Western people take for granted, we just simply don’t have,” said Al-Tamimi. “We don’t have the concept of unemployment checks.”

What it’s like to travel to Jordan, Egypt, and Lebanon now

Recent visitors and operators on the ground say world-famous sites like Petra in Jordan, Lebanon’s Baalbek Roman Ruins, and the Great Pyramids of Giza in Egypt are rather empty. “It is a recommended time to travel actually,” said Salah of Great Wonders of Egypt.

Yulia Denisyuk , a freelance journalist who visited Jordan on multiple occasions in the past seven years, said that when she was there in February, there was barely anyone in Wadi Rum and no one else at her favorite accommodation, Rum Planet Camp . “It was very surreal: Jordan is always calm but was even more so now without tourists there,” she said. “But it was also eerie and heartbreaking to know that [war] is happening so close to where we stood.”

Karolanne Emery, a teacher who embarked on a weeklong dive trip from London to Egypt in February, said she had a great time in Hurghada and Dahab, and she plans to return this October. “Honestly, apart from the Palestine flags, you would never know that there was a war happening in the next country,” she said.

Travel journalist Dayvee Sutton visited Lebanon on a 33-hour stopover in mid-October near the beginning of the war and said a short trip wasn’t nearly enough. “I only had two days and wish I stayed a week,” she said.

As of press time, the U.S. State Department lists a travel advisory for Jordan as a Level 2, or “exercise increased caution,” while Lebanon and Egypt are listed as Level 3 or “reconsider travel.” The highest level is 4, which is a “do not travel” advisory.

Travel to the Middle East isn’t expected to return en masse as long as the war continues, but some in the industry are seeing signs that not all travelers are staying away.

Tour operator Intrepid says bookings for its tours to Egypt and Jordan “are strong,” and Alexandra Baackes of Wander Women Retreats said her 14-woman trip to Jordan for May 2024 was sold out. “We definitely have done a lot of guest reassurance around traveling to Jordan at this time, even offering to speak directly to some of our guests’ families who had hesitations,” she said. “As heartbreaking as the situation is right now across the border, I feel confident that our guests in Jordan and Egypt will not be impacted. If anything, they will find thinner crowds and even wider open arms than usual.”

The situation is different in Lebanon, which sees frequent missile fire over its southern border (Beirut, Egyptian Red Sea towns, and an U.S. Army base in northeastern Jordan on the border with Syria have also experienced strikes). Abboud of Discovery Beyond Borders in Lebanon doesn’t expect business to pick back up for at least a year—though her booking calendar is no longer empty. “I’m hosting three groups in the next two months,” she said. “But I still cannot deny that I am nervous every day that something is going to happen and they might cancel.”

“Honestly, we live day by day with no predictions or long-term plan,” she said.

A practical guide to travel in Egypt, from tipping culture to independent touring

From packing tips to advice on haggling, here’s everything you need to know while planning your trip.

Whether you want to sail down the Nile on a felucca, explore ancient temples, browse the museums of Cairo or go trekking in Sinai, there are a few things to bear in mind when planning your trip to Egypt. Here’s what to be aware of when it comes to visas, tipping, guides and more.

Do I need a visa?

Almost all travellers, including visitors from the UK and the EU, need a visa to travel to Egypt. While it’s possible to get a visa on arrival, it saves time at the airport if you apply online in advance. A single-entry tourist visa costs US$25 (£20). If you plan to stay in the resort towns in Sinai for fewer than 15 days, you do not need a visa. Instead, you receive a ‘permission stamp’ in your passport when you land at Sharm el-Sheikh International Airport. While this option is a money saver, the list of places you’re permitted to visit is quite limited — even Ras Mohamed National Park at the southern tip of Sinai is off limits without the full visa.

What should I pack?

Egypt is a majority Muslim country, so it’s respectful for travellers to dress modestly. For all genders, this means covering everything between your shoulders and knees. You will likely be asked to cover up more if you visit a mosque or church.

The tap water is not safe to drink here so bring a water bottle with a filter, such as those from Lifestraw .

Wi-fi ranges from infuriatingly slow to nonexistent across the country, even at five-star hotels. Get mobile data through your service provider at home or buy an Egyptian SIM card when you land at the airport.

Can I pay by card in Egypt?

Cash reigns supreme but you can use a card at some higher-end hotels and restaurants. Take some Egyptian pounds out of a cash machine when you arrive, but be mindful of the fluctuating exchange rate and don’t take more out than you need. For bigger expenses, consider bringing US dollars, the most — and sometimes only — accepted foreign currency.

Tipping, called baksheesh, infiltrates almost every interaction you’ll have. It’s customary to tip nearly everyone you come in contact with, even for services you don’t want or require. Keep small change on hand for toilet attendants, porters, mosque caretakers and guards at temples and tombs.

Should I join a tour or travel independently?

Egypt has been a package-tour destination since the days of Thomas Cook, who first led a group to Egypt in 1869. The country is well set up for tour groups, and many first-time visitors find this option easiest, with guides and transport logistics arranged for you. Egypt’s historic sites have little signage, making a tour guide a necessity for deeper understanding.

Nile cruises generally run between Luxor and Aswan in both directions, but a few make the long journey from Cairo. Trains, planes and buses connect cities along the Nile, and buses or internal flights can take you to the Red Sea coast.
