61 Questions About Cruising Answered (Everything You Wanted to Know)

If you have questions about cruising, then we have the answers. Having taken dozens of cruises across (nearly) every major cruise line and spent time totaling months at sea… well, we’ve seen a lot.

cruise vacation questions and answers

That’s why we decided to answer every question we could come up with to make you as experienced a cruise passenger as we are. And if we didn’t cover your question? Simply put it in the comments below and we’ll answer it, too.

In This Article...

Cruise Booking Questions & Answers

Before you can cruise, you need to actually book your trip. That leads to a lot of questions regarding finding and reserving the right cruise for you.

How do I find the best cruise line for me?

Truth is that the vast majority (we’d say 80%) of a cruise is the same from line to line. You eat in the buffet, hang out poolside, watch a show in the evening and visit the same ports. However, that 20% that is different can make a big difference in your vacation.

The easiest way to see which line is for you is to simply visit their website and get a look at the marketing. Are you a family looking to cruise? Then see if the site shows pictures of kids and families having a blast onboard. Are you older and looking for a more refined atmosphere? Look for cruise lines that feature older passengers enjoying drinks or fine dining.

Just keep in mind that the cruise lines hire attractive models to feature on their websites — we’ve noticed this especially with older passengers. None of us look that pretty!

Can I book a last-minute cruise for cheap?

It would make sense that if a cabin is about to sail empty, then it would be offered at a dirt-cheap price at the last minute just to get people on the ship. In reality, that’s not how it works.

For one, most ships sail full. Occupancy rates regularly average more than 100% (meaning each cabin has two passengers with some having three or more), so there usually aren’t empty rooms on the ship.

Second, cruise lines don’t want to train passengers to wait until the last moment to book but cutting rates right before a ship sails.

Despite the websites and ads offering cheap last-minute discounts, it’s usually not the case.

Where can I find cheap cruises?

Carnival Sunshine and Liberty in port

Search around online and you’ll find something surprising — all the websites likely have identical prices. There isn’t a site that offers cheaper fares than all the others.

If you want to find cheap cruises, there are a couple of steps you can take . First, try to sail when school is in session. During this time of year families with kids can’t get away as easily. Cruise lines generally offer cheaper rates to keep ships full.

Second, you’ll find less expensive cruises on older ships. New ships have all the latest and greatest and a price tag that reflects that. Older ships may not have the bells and whistles, but usually have less expensive cruise fares.

Do I need to wait for a sale to book a cruise?

Head to any cruise website and odds are good that you’ll see some sort of sale going on, often with a countdown timer ticking the seconds until it ends.

It can make it seem like you need to jump at the deal. Truth is these deals run constantly . When the timer hits zero the offer may be tweaked slightly or often it’s just extended. But it’s not like a cruise will be hundreds of dollars less one day from the next due to a sale.

In other words, book when you find a deal you like, not based on a sale.

Are interior rooms bad? Should they be avoided?

Interior cabins are on the inside of the cruise ship. They offer a smaller space than other rooms and have no windows to the outside. To some people, that sounds awful.

Having sailed dozens of cruises, we’ve stayed in interior cabins plenty of times. In general, we find them perfectly fine for shorter trips (3-4 days). More than that and we’d suggest an oceanview or balcony cabin.

On shorter cruises, you spend less time in the cabin so spending more on the room doesn’t make much sense to us. Interior cabins can get you on the ship for less money . One big benefit is if you’re a light sleeper, these rooms get very dark, making it easier to get some rest.

Are balcony cabins worth the money?

cruise vacation questions and answers

Thinking of a balcony cabin ? You’ve likely noticed the higher price tag versus other rooms on the ship. Our opinion is if you are taking a cruise of more than five days, then yes, having the balcony is worth it. Shorter cruises mean more of your trip is spent out and about. These longer trips often have more downtime where you can enjoy the balcony space.

In general, however, we think people spend way less time on balconies than they think. Most people head out for a few minutes a few times a day to check things out and then head back in. There is a lot of benefit to having the natural light and fresh air in the cabin. So definitely a balcony is wonderful to have, but don’t think it will ruin your cruise if you don’t book one.

When is the best time to book a cruise?

There’s no “best” time to book a cruise . There isn’t a time of year when prices are lower if you book right then. If, say, each February saw cruise lines cut prices, then passengers would simply wait until then to book and not book other times of the year.

However, there are times of year to sail that are better if you want to save money. When going to the Caribbean, the easy way to think about it is to sail when kids are in school. During the school year, fewer families can travel, meaning less demand. Thus, cruise lines generally have lower prices to entice passengers to sail.

What’s the ‘Rule of 2.5’? (Why is my cruise more expensive than the headline price?)

Go to any cruise website and you’ll see low cruise fares. Take a vacation for a few hundred bucks! Truth is, what you pay is much more. Cabins are sold at double occupancy (meaning you’re charged for two people), and then you have to add on taxes and fees.

We like to use something called the Rule of 2.5 . Take the headline price and multiply it by two-and-a-half. This is a much more accurate representation of what the final price will end up being.

You can multiply by three if you want a better idea of what you’ll spend when you add in onboard spending and gratuities.

Which cruise line is cheapest?

Want a deal on your cruise? The best option is to search across all the cruise lines as that gives you the highest chance of snagging a cheap vacation. In general, however, we find that MSC and Carnival generally offer the cheapest fares. Both are known as budget-friendly lines and though cruise prices have increased in recent years, they still offer a value.

Where should I book my room on the ship?

Most modern cruise ships are laid out in a similar way. There’s an interior section where things like the main promenade, shops, restaurants, and casino are found. Typically this is multiple decks, such as decks 5-7.

Then the top of the ship features the pool deck and all the outdoor amenities. On today’s cruise ships, this can be as high as decks 18-20.

These two areas are where you’ll spend the most time around the ship. That’s why we suggest a room located between the interior promenade and the pool deck, higher up on the ship. That way it’s easier and faster to get around. It’s also a good idea to be a couple of floors away from either to limit any potential noise.

As for forward, middle, or aft, there are venues the entire length of the ship, so you’ll be back and forth plenty. To us, this doesn’t matter much.

What is the best cruise line for kids?

cruise vacation questions and answers

To be sure, kids will have fun on any cruise line. After all, kids really don’t need more than a pool to have a good time. That said, some are definitely more focused on kids and families than others.

Two cruise lines stand out the most to us: Carnival and Royal Caribbean . Both feature a lot for kids to do with plenty of active elements on board such as climbing walls, ropes courses, roller coasters, and waterslides.

If sailing with older kids (10+) then we’d have to give the edge to Royal Caribbean. Their ships seem to put a lot of focus on things for kids to do such as the Flowrider, slides, arcades, and more. Their biggest ships are able to pack on the largest amount of these things onboard compared to others.

What is the best cruise line for adults?

Want to get away from the kids? Whether you are leaving them home, they are out of the house, or you just don’t have any, you aren’t alone in wanting to sail on a cruise line that’s more focused on adults.

Sure, you’ll have a good time on any line, but if you want something geared toward adults, then we’d recommend three in particular .

First is Virgin Voyages . This is the only line that’s adults-only. Those under 18 aren’t allowed to sail. As a result, the whole experience is geared more toward adults, including everything from entertainment to food options.

For a more traditional cruise experience, we’d suggest Celebrity or Princess . These two lines focus more on an affluent experience that appeals to adults. Princess tends to be the less expensive of the two.

Questions About Preparing For Your Cruise

Getting ready for your cruise? Here’s everything you need to know about preparing.

Where do I park for the trip?

If you drive to the port, parking is no problem. Every cruise port will have parking right near the ship, however, it can be expensive. Expect to pay at least $20 per day for the convenience of being able to park at the ship and walk to the terminal.

Want to save money? Many ports offer independent lots that will offer you parking for a sharp discount from the cruise port (often up to 50%) and a shuttle over to the ship. You can read more about parking here .

Do I need a passport to cruise?

It’s always a good idea to have a passport as it’s more flexible should you have to leave the cruise in the middle of the trip (very rare, but it can happen). That said, if you’re sailing a traditional round trip cruise from the U.S., then you can sail with a birth certificate and photo ID .

Cruises that are “closed loop” — meaning they begin and end at the same port — often fall under a special rule that allows a birth certificate to be used. So if you depart Miami on a seven-day cruise that skips around the Caribbean and comes back to Miami, you don’t need a passport.

That said, you’ll want to confirm with the cruise line, but most trips from the U.S. can be sailed without the passport.

Do I need to bring cash?

money with a cruise keycard

It’s always a good idea to have some walking around money, but it’s likely less than you think. On the ship all your spending is done on your room keycard. That means onboard, you don’t need any cash other than what you plan to use for gambling. Even then, you can charge funds to your account if you need to.

In ports of call having some cash is a good idea. While credit cards are widely accepted, we find it simply easier to use cash. So you’ll want some money for things like meals, souvenirs, and cab fare. It’s also nice to have some small bills for tips off the ship. You can see our recommendation on amounts to bring here .

How do gratuities work?

If you’ve never taken a cruise, then gratuities can be confusing ( we explain them in full here ). Put simply, every passenger on the ship is charged a gratuity (sometimes called a service charge) each day of the cruise. The amount is normally around $16-18 per person, per day. So a couple traveling on a 7-day cruise will pay about $250 in gratuity charges during the trip.

These tips are then pooled and distributed to the crew. You can tip more if you feel inclined, but aren’t required. Passengers have the opportunity to prepay these charges before the cruise to get them taken care of early, or they can wait until onboard and have them charged automatically.

Should I prepay gratuities?

There’s no real difference if you prepay gratuities or not. You will still receive the same level of service. On the plus side, if you prepay then it’s all taken care of before you board and it’s one less charge that you’ll have at the end of the cruise. On the downside, it means giving the cruise line more of your money for longer.

We tend to prepay gratuities just because we like having a smaller bill at the end of the trip.

What should I pack for my cruise?

We’ll assume that if you are sailing to the Caribbean then you know to pack shorts, swimsuit, underwear and socks. But cruising is unique in that you have to pack for a lot of different situations, from formal night in the dining room, to sitting poolside with a drink, to being casual in port.

Then there are nice things to bring for the cabin like an outlet adapter to give more plug space and a shoe organizer for holding smaller items to keep them from cluttering up the room. To answer the question of what you should pack, we have a checklist here and a list of unique cruise items to pack here .

What time should I arrive in port?

cruise vacation questions and answers

When you check in for the cruise ahead of time, it will offer you a list of times to arrive. These days, most lines have a 30-minute boarding window that passengers choose. So if boarding is from 1 p.m to 4 p.m., you can choose a time such as 2:30-3:00 p.m. to arrive.

In general, we recommend selecting a time later in the boarding window. There is often a big rush to board early, and later in the day you will see much smaller crowds trying to get on the ship. As well, boarding later means your cabin should be ready and you can head straight to it.

What time should I schedule my flight home?

Flying home after your cruise? You’ll want to allow plenty of time to get to your flight. Ships normally arrive back into port early in the morning — 6:00 a.m. to 7:00 a.m. From there, the ship has to clear customs and then passengers can start to debark. Once off the ship, you need time to get to the airport and then through security for your flight.

We have a list of suggested times for flights based on your cruise port here . Generally, we’d suggest not booking a flight before 10:00 a.m. at the earliest for most ports. However, allowing more time if you can is smart. Having an extra hour or two ensures that you’re covered if anything goes wrong.

How do I get to the cruise port from the airport?

Flying in for your cruise? The best way to get to the cruise ship will vary from port to port. However, in general we recommend using Uber or Lyft. We’ve found they have rates that are comparable — and often lower — than taxis. They also operate at all the major airport and cruise ports, making it simple to get back and forth.

If traveling with a larger group, then independent shuttles can make a lot of sense. We generally advise against shuttles run by the cruise lines as they only operate on the day of the cruise and cost considerably more per person than Uber/Lyft.

Are there limits on what I can pack?

Within reason, there aren’t limits to how much you can pack on a cruise . Want to pack a couple of large suitcases? That’s perfectly fine and there is no charge for bags like what you see with an airline. There are also no rules regarding liquids like you see when you fly.

That said, we generally recommend that cruise passengers pack lighter. Remember, you still have to carry the suitcases from home to the cruise port and back home. Trying to deal with multiple heavy bags isn’t fun or easy when you’re supposed to be on vacation.

Questions About Food & Drink

Eating and drinking is a major part of your vacation. But there’s a lot to know about food and beverage during the cruise.

What is the food like on the ship?

cruise vacation questions and answers

In our honest opinion, the food on a cruise ship can vary widely. We’ve had fantastic meals that we’d take over anything on land down to food that we thought was terrible. Over the years, we’ve figured out what’s good to us and what isn’t.

More generally, the food options are widespread. You have all types of cuisine throughout the cruise and options that range from a quick bite of pizza to fancy steakhouses. Every ship will have a buffet and main dining room. Outside of that, there are a number of other options that will depend on the cruise line and ship. These days most ships go heavy on specialty restaurants where there is a charge to dine.

In general, we find the specialty restaurants to be good to very good. In our years we have yet to have a bad meal here. Restaurants that serve big crowds — such as the buffet and dining room — seem to be more hit and miss. Some dishes are great, some are not.

We do have to give special recognition to desserts on the ship, which we generally find very good. You can read more about eating on a cruise here .

Can you find vegetarian/vegan options?

If you have a restrictive diet, whether it be vegetarian or vegan or gluten-free or something else, cruise lines can accommodate you well. With literally millions of passengers sailing each year, cruise lines have seen every type of special diet imaginable. In fact, at dinner the waiter will always also if you have any diet restrictions or allergies.

As vegetarian and vegan diets in particular have increased in popularity, lines have added a number of options for passengers. You’ll have no trouble finding something good to eat.

How much do drinks cost on a cruise?

If you’ve never sailed before, get ready for some sticker shock when it comes to drinks on the ship. A soda will cost around $3. A beer runs roughly $8, and a cocktail will be in the $12-$14 range. Wine will vary depending on the type, but expect it to start in the $8-$10 per glass range.

In addition, beverages have an automatic gratuity that’s also charged (usually 18%). So that $14 drink is actually around $16.50.

Is the drink package worth it?

Don’t want to worry about the cost of drinks? Cruise lines sell drink packages , where you pay one set daily fee and get to drink whatever you want. For most people, we would suggest that these packages won’t be worth the money, though there are always exceptions.

The issue is that the pricing means you usually need to drink about six cocktails or ten beers each and every day to breakeven on the cost. And even when you’re in port, you still pay for the package. As well, if one person buys the package, then all adults in the cabin must buy it as well, even if they don’t drink.

On a short cruise, maybe you can keep this kind of pace up. Over the course of more than a few days it gets harder to get your money’s worth.

When are bars open?

cruise vacation questions and answers

Are you on the cruise ship? Then bars are open. From the time you step onboard until the time you step off, there will be a bar open somewhere. The only exception may be in the early morning hours (think 3-6 a.m.).

This isn’t to say that every bar is open around the clock. Many don’t open until the middle of the day and then close later in the evening. Still, there will be somewhere to get a drink and most times you don’t have to go far to get it.

How do meals work on the ship?

Food is a big part of a cruise. How meals work can be a little confusing for first timers. Some food is included with your fare. This includes the buffet and main dining room. Others are a charge (specialty restaurants) and need to be reserved ahead of time.

For the buffet and other quick eats, you simply show up, grab what you want and find a spot to sit (yes, you are allowed to take food out of the dining area). For dining rooms, you’ll be given a set time to arrive (normally 5:30 or 8:30) or you might have anytime dining where you can show up whenever you’re hungry. Here, you’ll check in with the staff, and they will take a few minutes to find you a table.

At free restaurants, you simply get up and leave when you’re done. There’s no check to sign or bill to pay.

If dining at a specialty restaurant, you’ll arrive at your reservation time and then be seated. After the meal, you’ll have a bill to sign to confirm the charge and leave any additional gratuity.

Is all the food free?

For most cruise lines, all the food is not free on the trip. To be sure, you can eat without paying extra on any cruise. The lines all have a buffet and main dining room that will be included with the cruise fare. Most also have another spot or two where you can grab a light meal or snacks.

Then there are specialty restaurants that are for an extra charge. In general, this is any restaurant on the ship that includes sit-down, personalized service. So think of spots like the romantic Italian restaurant or the steakhouse.

Other charges for food include specialty coffees, alcoholic drinks, premium ice cream, and more.

Can I bring drinks on the ship?

Yes and no. You can bring on beverages, but there are restrictions.

Let’s start with alcoholic drinks. Just about every cruise line allows you to bring on a regular sized bottle of wine or champagne per adult when you board. However, anything beyond that is not allowed. No beer or liquor is allowed. You can see our list of cruise line policies here.

As for non-alcoholic drinks, many lines (though certainly not all) allow you to bring on a 12-pack of anything you want. This rule varies more from line to line, with some having specific rules regarding packaging. For more details, see our article here .

Miscellaneous Questions & Answers About Cruising

From what to do on the ship to will you get seasick, below we cover all the random questions that might come up as you get ready to sail.

What is there to do on a cruise?

Pool deck on Celebrity

The list of what you can do on a cruise is seemingly endless with modern ships. Older ships have fewer activities, but can still keep you busy.

While we can’t cover everything you can do, we can mention some of the big ones. Every ship will have a large pool deck, a casino, and tons of bars. There are activities put on by the staff during the day (everything from trivia to putting contests) and evening entertainment that on some ships can rival Broadway. Shopping is widely available, as are a number of restaurants. For kids there are arcades. Sport courts with basketball (and pickleball!) are common.

Newer ships feature everything from full waterparks to go-kart tracks to roller coasters, bumper cars, surf simulators and rock walls for kids and teens.

Even with all that, it sells short what you can do on a cruise.

What is included on a cruise?

In general, all your basics are included on a cruise . So for your cruise fare you get your cabin and basic meals and snacks such as the buffet, dining room and included restaurants. Your fare includes drinks like water, tea, lemonade, and coffee. You also have free run of the ship, enjoying the pool, waterparks, and other activities onboard. Finally, entertainment such as the evening shows are also included in your fare.

What costs extra on the cruise?

While there is plenty included with your cruise, there’s also lots that cost extra . You can expect to spend about 30-40% of what you paid in cruise fare in onboard spending based on the financial reports from cruise lines.

So what costs more? Any specialty restaurants are not included in your fare. This is essentially any restaurant with sit-down waiter service, outside of the main dining room. Casino gambling of course costs extra. Alcoholic drinks are an extra charge, as is wi-fi service, and any treatments you might want to get in the spa. You’ll also have a daily gratuity charge for each person sailing.

When off the ship, all expenses are extra unless visiting a cruise line’s private island. As well, any shore excursions or tours you do will cost extra.

Does the ship have a casino?

cruise vacation questions and answers

Unless sailing a handful of ships (such as Disney) then yes, you will have a full casino on board. While relatively small compared to a land-based casinos, it’s plenty large for the ship.

You’ll find all the games you’d expect in a normal casino including slots, blackjack, roulette, and craps. There are also a number of games you don’t see on land. For instance, cruise ships often have coin pusher machines, skill cranes for money, and their own scratch-off tickets.

What is my keycard? What does it do?

There’s arguably nothing on the ship more important for you than your keycard. Most times this looks just like a credit card. A few lines have wearable devices instead.

These cards are your room key, but they also are used to check you in and out around the ship. When you leave the ship to go to port, you’ll scan your card so the staff knows who is on and off the ship.

Perhaps most importantly, this card is tied to your onboard account. Want a drink? Buy a souvenir on the ship? Book a spa treatment? You’ll used your card to pay for all these items on the ship. Then your bill is settled at the end of the cruise.

What do I wear to formal night?

Depending on your cruise, you’ll likely have one or two formal nights during the trip. We cover what to know and wear here , but in general you don’t have to be too worried about meeting the dress code.

Some folks dress to the nines, including a full evening gown and tuxedos. It seems that most people, however, simply dress nice without going all out. For women, a nice blouse or dress is fine. For men, a button up or collared shirt and a pair of pants is suitable. On lines that are higher end, expect the formal wear to be a step higher.

What you want to avoid are flip flips, ball caps, shorts, and the like.

How fast is the wi-fi on the ship?

cruise vacation questions and answers

The good news is that if you need it, wi-fi is available on any major cruise ship. The bad news is that service is pricey (often more than $20 per day) and the speeds can vary.

Based on our cruises, the highest-tier internet tends to average in the 3-5 Mbps range . That’s much slower than on land, but fast enough for general browsing and streaming.

That said, cruise ships are trying to improve speeds, including the implementation of Starlink. Still, the speeds can vary widely. We’ve seen cruises with speeds consistently in the 40-60 Mbps range (no different than what many have at home) while other cruises still see 3-5 Mbps speeds.

What is an Alaskan cruise like compared to the Caribbean?

Maybe you think of a cruise as a bunch of people hanging poolside with lots of drinks, tropical music playing, and lots of passengers in swimsuits. An Alaskan cruise couldn’t be more different.

Cruises to Alaska take you to one of the most beautiful and unspoiled parts of the entire planet. You’ll see mountains, wildlife, glaciers, and some of the most amazing scenery you’ve ever seen.

Onboard the atmosphere is different as well. It’s still a cruise so there is a lot going on, but it’s much more subdued (for instance, there’s no sail away party with lots of dancing poolside). Your other passengers aren’t there to party, they are there to take in the nature and scenery.

Is there a difference between new and old cruise ships?

Old cruise ship docked next to a new one

Cruise lines love to show off all the new features on their latest and greatest ships. What they don’t really show you is that these new ships can be completely different from older ships.

Like anything else, cruise ships evolve. And given that the life of a ship can approach three decades, that’s a lot of time for things to change.

Older ships are still kept up well, but they are generally smaller, hold fewer passengers, and have a lot fewer amenities like restaurants and activities. Many people prefer this style of ship, but newer ones will definitely have more to see, do, and experience.

Will I get seasick on a cruise?

Seasickness does happen on a cruise, but we’d guess it’s much less often than you’d think .

For one, cruise lines want you to have a fun and comfortable trip. So when possible, they can maneuver the ship to avoid rough seas.

Still, it is possible that your ship might encounter a storm of simply larger swells. In that case, you might be surprised at how stable a modern ship feels. If you’re imagining rocking back and forth, that’s not the case. Having sailed dozens of cruises, the absolute worst we’ve really felt was enough motion to let you know you are at sea, but not enough that you were bumping into walls or swaying while walking. It can happen, but it’s rare.

Is there a difference between short and longer cruises?

Cruises come in all sorts of lengths, from three nights to three months and even longer. You’ll find a big difference in the atmosphere onboard depending on the length of trip .

In general, the longer the cruise, the more subdued you can expect the atmosphere to be and the older the average age. Shorter trips often see younger and more lively crowds. Longer cruises are more relaxed with passengers that have the ability to take off for extended periods of time.

How do I book shore excursions?

Cruise excursion cenote

Shore excursions are tours that you can take in port. Instead of having to put together something you do yourself, excursions allow you to pay one fee and get everything all taken care of in a single transaction, including transportation to and from the ship.

The easiest way to book is through the cruise line. You’ll be able to reserve a spot through your online account ahead of the cruise. If you wait until on the ship, you can head to the Shore Excursions desk, which every ship will have. There, the staff can explain the different options and book your tour.

You can also book excursions independent of the cruise line online or even as you walk into port last minute.

What’s the rule of 5-10-15?

Another rule of thumb we created is the rule of 5-10-15. It covers what type of cabin to book and where on the ship.

Let’s start with the five. Here, it relates to when to get a balcony cabin. If sailing a cruise of five days or more, then the balcony will be worth it to have. Shorter than that and you’re likely to not spend enough time in the room to get your money’s worth.

The “10-15” is the deck to book. As mentioned in this article, there are two main areas you’ll spend time. The interior promenades, restaurants, and shopping are in the middle of the ship, usually around decks 6-8 or 5-7. Then you have the pool decks at the top of the ship, which today can be as high as deck 20.

Since this is where you’ll spend the most time, picking a cabin deck between the two spaces is ideal. Hence, we think decks 10-15 are ideal.

What happens if I’m late for the ship?

Let’s just say that you don’t want to find out. Cruise ships stick to a set schedule. A late departure can throw everything off and even mean not making the next port in time. So when they say all aboard is at 4:00 p.m., that’s not a suggestion.

While the ship doesn’t leave right at the all aboard time, it does leave soon after. And yes, if you are late back to the ship, then it has been known to leave passengers at the dock. It’s one reason why we always aim to make it back at least 45 minutes before all aboard, just in case there is a delay.

Can I bring marijuana on the ship?

In many states where cruises sail — California, Washington, New York — marijuana is legal for recreational purposes. Even more states have laws that allow medical marijuana.

Given the international nature of cruises, however, it’s not allowed on the cruise ship . Lines follow federal law, which still outlaws marijuana. As well, with the trip taking you to multiple countries, the complexities of laws can be overwhelming.

Instead, cruises keep things simple. It’s not allowed, no matter where you are sailing from.

What should I do in port?

Your day in port is your own to do whatever you want. Hit the beach, book an excursion for some adventure, or just mill about in the port area. It’s up to you. There’s no “should” for how you spend your vacation. In fact, some people even just stay on the ship.

In general, we do suggest that you book a shore excursion for at least one port of call. Excursions give you a chance to do things that you simply can’t experience back home. We find them to be some of the most memorable experiences of the entire cruise.

What do I need to bring into port?

Bottle of sunscreen sitting on a table

If you’re headed into port, you actually don’t need to bring that much . The most important thing to bring is your ship-issued keycard (which is used to check you off and on the ship) and a photo ID if you are an adult.

Other than that, you just want to bring what you might need for the day. We like to bring a light backpack with a towel if we plan to hit the beach, sunscreen, and some cash. Items like a hat and/or sunglasses are also smart.

We’d also suggest wearing comfortable walking shoes into port. There’s typically a lot of walking, so comfy shoes are nice to have. You can always bring a pair of flip-flops to change into if headed to the beach.

Is smoking allowed on the ship?

Yes, smoking is allowed on the ship but it is very controlled. For instance, smoking isn’t allowed in your cabin (there are big fines) nor is it allowed in most places on the ship. Instead, there are designated smoking spots onboard. You can find the location by asking the crew or looking in the ship’s daily planner. Smoking is usually also allowed in the casino.

What is the “space ratio”? Why should I care?

Many people worry about too many people on the cruise ship. After all, the newest ships can carry upwards of 6,000 passengers at once. But that doesn’t just mean cruise lines are packing more people in the same amount of space. Cruise ships have gotten larger as well.

That’s why we like to use what we call the space ratio. This calculation takes the tonnage of a ship (a measure of its size) and divides it by the occupancy. From here, you have a metric that you can use to compare one ship to another.

In general we consider a ratio above 40 to be a sign of a ship with good space per passenger. You can find the space ratio of your ship here .

Do cruise ships feel crowded?

The best answer we can give you is “it depends.” We’ve been on some ships with small space ratios that do feel crowded seemingly everywhere you go. Other ships might feel crowded in certain areas at certain times — such as the pool deck in the middle of a day at sea.

What we have noticed is that ship design can play a big impact in how busy a ship feels. Ships built with choke points where lots of people are funneled through a narrow space will feel more crowded than an open design.

Our advice? Expect some crowded moments, but it’s not always that way.

How can I see my cruise ship’s latest health inspection?

Many people don’t realize it but cruise ships undergo health inspections, similar to a restaurant on land.

Ships are subject to two inspections a year under the CDC Vessel Sanitation Program. The inspection scores are then posted online for the public to see . There is also a report that covers all the issues found.

In general cruise ships score very high (it’s not unusual to see a score of 100). Occasionally a ship will score ‘unsatisfactory,’ meaning they scored less than an 86.

Do I need the cruise line’s app?

Cruises used to be a place where you put the phone down and don’t use it for a week. Now, you have to carry it with you. Cruise lines all have phone-based apps and they’ve become a part of the sailing.

The apps now have a lot of information you need or want to know, including the daily planner, maps, reservations, and even the ability to chat with other members of your party and track your onboard spending.

We’d love to tell you the app is optional, but at this point we’d say you need to have it.

Is there a dress code on a cruise?

For most of the time you’re onboard, there isn’t a dress code. Wear what you want, when you want. The one exception is that if you head into a restaurant during the day, you will want to cover up. The buffet is casual, so shorts and a t-shirt or coverup are fine, as are flip flops. Any time you eat in the dining room, you’ll want to avoid swimwear, hats, and anything too casual. Just wearing a pair of pants or jeans is fine.

Things change on formal night or if dining in higher-end specialty restaurants. If eating in the main dining room during formal night or a nicer restaurant, you’ll want to dress up some. You don’t have to wear a suit and tie or an evening gown, but avoid shorts and t-shirts.

Do I need to worry about hurricanes?

The good thing about cruise ships when it comes to hurricanes? They can move. While big storms might capture the imagination, the truth is that cruise ships are rarely (if ever) directly impacted by a hurricane. They can see they forecast well in advance and steer clear.

There is a chance that a port of call or departure port could be impacted by a storm. In that case, a port of call could be canceled or you might be delayed in getting back home or embarking on your cruise. However, that’s relatively rare.

What happens if a port of call is canceled?

We’ll never forget spending two days at sea headed to Roatan, Honduras, only for the captain to come over the loudspeaker the afternoon before and tell us that another ship damaged the pier and we wouldn’t be able to dock.

As a result, we spent a third day in a row at sea.

When a port of call is canceled, not much happens for passengers . If it’s feasible, another port might be substituted. If not, then you’ll often spend the day at sea while heading toward the next port. No compensation is normally offered unless missing the port completely alters the cruise (such as a trip that has to end early).

Are cruises LGBTQ friendly?

In general, you can expect a cruise to be a good spot for LGBTQ passengers. That’s not to say that the ship is decked out with rainbow flags or there is a pride parade in the evening, but most people simply are there to have a good time… not worry about other people’s lives. Some lines — such as Virgin Voyages — do seem to cater more to LGBTQ passengers than others.

That said, any major cruise line will offer up some sort of meet-up time for like-minded passengers if you want to find some new friends during the trip.

What’s the deal with rubber duckies?

Ducks found on a cruise ship

Maybe you’ve seen them online or perhaps you’ve taken a cruise and there seems to be a random rubber duck sitting in an out of the way place.

Over the past decade or so, these ducks have become a sort of game in cruising . Passengers bring these ducks from home and hide them around the ship in a type of treasure hunt. If you find one, you can keep it, leave it be for someone else to find, or pick it up and re-hide it somewhere else. There is often a note attached that says who hid it and wishing you a good cruise.

Can I bring my pet?

No. If you have a service animal, then you can make arrangements to bring them onboard with you. Just keep in mind that due to customs restrictions, there are a considerable amount of hurdles and paperwork you’ll need to complete to get off the ship with your animal.

However, emotional support animals or pets aren’t allowed on the ship with you.

Is there a gym on the ship?

We don’t think most people consider working out while on a cruise . However, there are those that like to get a workout in. If you’re part of this group, then yes, there is a gym.

If you’re imagining some tired workout spot like in a chain hotel, that’s not the case. Cruise ship gyms are nicely equipped with lots of space, plenty of machines (including dumbbells, weight machines, exercise bikes, treadmills and more), and they normally have stunning views high up on the ship.

Gyms are normally located next to the spa on the ship. While the sps charges a fee for services, the gym is free to use.

Will I get bored on a cruise?

In our opinion, if you get bored on a ship, then it’s your own fault. We will say that older ships do have significantly less to do. If you are sailing one of these and there are multiple days at sea, you may be pretty happy to finally hit a port of call.

Larger ships have lots of things to do around the clock to where there will almost always be something you can find to keep from getting bored.

For most cruises, being bored isn’t an issue. And if you do get a little bored, well, that’s nothing a drink while sitting by the pool can’t fix.

Are there kids areas on the ship?

Yes. One big benefit of sailing any major line is that there will be a spot dedicated to kids on the ship and it’s included with the cruise. Here, parents can drop kids off and the staff will watch them, and also provide activities and entertainment like board games, movies, video games, arts, and crafts and more.

You will simply register at the start of the cruise and bring the kids by whenever you want while the area is open (it normally keeps long hours). This means on a family vacation the kids can have a spot to themselves while parents get to enjoy some kid-free time as well.

Are cruises accessible for handicapped passengers?

We’d argue there isn’t a better vacation for passengers with a disability than a cruise. Ships go out of their way to ensure everyone — no matter their abilities — can enjoy a vacation. That includes everything from those with sensory issues to people in wheelchairs and seemingly everything in between.

Ships are built with mobility issues in mind. There are fully accessible cabins, ramps around the ship, and touch buttons for opening doors. There are also lots of crew around should you need any assistance.

When in port it can be a different story as many ports don’t have the infrastructure that we’re accustomed to in the United States. Private destinations from cruise lines, however, will offer accessible features.

Why should I cruise?

Let’s start off with the one of the first cruise questions I see time after time from people who have never been cruising for.

Choosing to cruise for your vacation is perfect for anyone looking for affordable travel, multiple destinations, activities for everyone, and many other things.

If you are looking to truly explore a specific city or location, cruising may not be right for your vacation, however, if you are looking for a great time with your family or friends exploring multiple areas of the world for a fraction of the price, cruising is totally perfect for your dream vacation!

How affordable is cruising?

When someone is attempting to plan their vacation, one of the most important aspects is affordability. While it’s super easy to budget through a good travel planner , I completely understand how the cost of travel can increase exponentially! But do not worry, cruising is VERY affordable.

It of course depends on the type of cruise you book, but you can easily find cruises for a few hundred dollars which includes accommodation, food, entertainment, and sometimes other perks. At the end of the day, it honestly depends on what you are looking for, however, the one, upfront cost really helps out when budgeting for your dream vacation.

Is cruising just for older people?

What a silly question, of course not! While the cruise industry has definitely earned a reputation for their excellent service towards older folks, in recent years cruise lines have made leaps and bounds towards including families and younger passengers on their ships.

As a senior in college, I can attest to the fabulous experiences cruise lines have created for families and younger passengers. From kid clubs to karaoke bars to crystal blue pools to fun nightclubs, cruises are amazing vacations for people of all ages– especially on college cruises !

Are cruises fun?

Oh my goodness yes! Like I said earlier, cruises have something fun and exhilarating for everyone. Of course, your vacation will be exactly what you make it, so if you go on the cruise with low expectations, do not be shocked when you don’t have a great time.

But, if you go on your cruise excited, you will be delighted to know that you can do whatever you want on a cruise! Whether you want to spend the day napping on the pool deck or watching a movie ordering food service to your room, there are countless ways to have a blast on a cruise ship. With so many options of activities on cruise ships, how could you not have fun?

How is the food on cruise ships?

The great thing about choosing to cruise for your vacation is that all the main dining facilities onboard are completely included in your fare! That means you can go to the buffet 10 times a day or order 4 desserts and 2 appetizers at the main dining room. I have always been able to find delicious food on all the ships I have been on.

Now it might take some trial and error, however, you will quickly fall in love with all the food offerings on your cruise vacation. If you are looking to indulge a little, check out your cruise line’s specialty dining packages and restaurants to receive extra tasty food onboard.

cruise vacation questions and answers

Where can I cruise to?

That is a fabulous question! And the answer is practically anywhere. While the price of cruise itineraries will go up when sailing to remote locations like Antarctica, there are over 300 cruise ships running at a time in the great oceans taking their passengers to the most popular and most remote destinations found around the world.

Of course, the most popular destinations for cruise lines to visit are in Europe and the Caribbean, however, I bet that there is a cruise going to any vacation spot (on the ocean) that your mind can think of!

What is not allowed on a cruise ship?

While you should totally pack your favorite swimsuits and sandals when packing for your cruising vacation, there are some items you should avoid packing so they do not get compensated on your cruise.

These items are sharp objects, illegal drugs, firearms & ammunition, CBD oil or products, candles or incense, coffee makers, hot plates, clothes irons, travel steamers. hoverboards, baby monitors, extension cords, dangerous chemicals, flammable liquids and explosives, hookah & hookah pipes, perishable food or meat products, alcoholic beverages (typically), floats, inner tubes, pool noodles, and beach balls.

Now of course this list is subjective to the specific cruise line’s policies, so make sure to double-check with your cruise line to see their prohibited items.

What items are not recommended for cruise ships?

Similar to the last question about prohibited items, the are numerous items that you should maybe leave home during your cruising adventure.

While these will probably not be confiscated, cruise lines advise you to avoid bringing them on your vacation. These items include baseball bats, hockey sticks, cricket bats, golf clubs, skateboards, surfboards, bicycles, drones, and kites. Like before, you should definitely check with your cruise line to check what their items they do not recommend packing are.

What are the loudest cruise staterooms?

Once you decide that you want to cruise, you are probably wondering what stateroom you should book. First of all, you are definitely going to want to avoid some of the noisiest staterooms found onboard cruise ships.

These include staterooms next to elevators, stairs, or crew access areas, staterooms above or below lounges and nightclubs, staterooms directly below the pool deck, adjoining staterooms, staterooms near the anchor, and finally, staterooms on the lower decks. I highly advise you to investigate your specific cruise ship’s deck plans to see where you want your vacation stateroom to be located.

What are back to back cruises?

While I have a whole other post on back to back cruises , this enhanced version of cruising is when you book two consecutive itineraries on the same cruise ship.

Back to back cruises are ideal for cruisers looking to spend more time at sea, saving money on transportation and other costs. I personally love back to back cruises and always watch out for them when searching for my future vacations at sea.

cruise vacation questions and answers

What is a muster drill?

Once onboard your cruise adventure you will have to complete a mandatory muster drill. A muster drill is when the cruise employees explain what will happen in an emergency.

This includes where you can find life jackets, lifeboats, etc. and ensures your safety in any situation. Don’t worry, cruise lines are not expecting any emergencies to happen at sea. They just have to follow the maritime laws and protect their passengers when sailing on the ocean.

How is the internet while cruising?

Unfortunately, the internet at sea is very limited. While some cruise lines may offer perks to their passengers like an internet package, the internet at sea is typically much slower and less reliable than on land.

So if you were hoping to remotely work on a cruise ship, you are most likely out of luck. However, if you are looking for a relaxing getaway, this unwanted perk may be a blessing in disguise!

Don’t worry, you will most likely be able to find areas with internet access in your ports so you do not have to go completely off the grid on your cruise.

Are there any extra costs to cruising?

While cruise fares include ALOT in their upfront price, there are a couple of extra costs that you should probably prepare for on your vacation. Most cruise lines will not pay for your flights so you will have to add that as another cost.

In addition, you will want to purchase travel insurance, pull out some cash for onboard and in port tips and purchases, and incorporate all the automatic gratuities you will have to pay once you leave your cruise ship.

The cruise lines typically add your daily gratuities to your onboard cruise account each night, so you will not need to tip waiters, however, there are other costs you will want to prepare for.

Do I need to get cash for my cruise?

Yes! You should definitely head to your local bank and prepare for your vacation by pulling out an adequate amount of cash for your adventure. You will most likely have unforeseen tips, souvenirs, taxi rides, and other things you will need to pay for during your cruise vacation.

You will want to pack some extra cash for your days in port. The ship card you will get on your first day of sailing only works on the ship, so you will need cash (some ports will not accept credit cards) prepared before you go to port.

Are Cruises Safe?

Yes! Cruises are totally safe. I am guessing you are referring to some of the few cases where incidences happened on cruise ships, but 99.9% of the time, you will have nothing to worry about.

Every cruise ship sailing at sea has to follow regulations– ensuring passengers have access to the best life jackets and safest lifeboats.

In regards to Norovirus and other sicknesses onboard, cruises are a lot safer and better at preventing sickness than most other forms of transportation!

The only reason that cruises earn a bad reputation in this regard is because the passengers are contained on the boat and cruise lines have to report all illnesses onboard. You would be surprised by the amount of sick people around you when you are traveling on a plane!

How do I stay in shape on a cruise?

If you have ever been on a cruise before, you know how easy it is to gain weight enjoying yourself on vacation. While it is completely okay to gain a couple of pounds having the time of your life, you may be looking to stay in shape on your cruising adventure.

Personally, I usually lose weight on cruises (weird, right?) because I am always busy doing all the amazing activities onboard. But if you are worried, don’t worry. Cruises are equipped with state of the art gyms that are offered complimentary with your cruise far for you to burn off those calories from the all-you-can-eat buffet!

cruise vacation questions and answers

Are excursions included with my cruise fare?

For most cruise lines, you will have to pay an additional cost per cruise excursion in your ports. While cruise line’s like Norwegian may offer deals that include shore excursion credits, you will definitely need to check with your cruise line to see their policies.

More than likely you will have to find and book the excursions you would like. You should either book these through the cruise line or 3rd party local companies (usually cheaper) before your journey to ensure you will have an amazing time at sea without any surprises

Do I need to dress nice on cruises?

This again depends on the cruise line you are sailing with. Personally, I prefer a more laid-back experience where you can wear what you want on all days of your cruise through cruise lines like Royal Caribbean , Norwegian Cruise Line , Celebrity Cruises , and Carnival .

If you are looking for a more formal style of cruising, look out for the more luxurious cruise lines like Cunard , Princess Cruises , and Holland America .

If you are a family and would love a fair mix of formal and laid-back vacation lifestyle, I totally recommend sailing with Disney Cruise Line .

How formal is formal on cruise ships?

Some cruise lines will have a couple of nights at sea where they expect their passengers to dress up for their shows and dinner.

Don’t worry, this isn’t a bad thing! It is actually quite the opposite. Embrace the moment, and do not fret, formal does not mean packing a tuxedo or a ballroom gown. Just make sure you have a couple outfits that aren’t jeans or shorts with flipflops like nice slacks and a nice shirt or a cocktail dress and you will be completely fine!

Plus, you will be able to get some fantastic professional pictures taken of you and your loved one, family, or friends.

What is the best cruise line?

How is one supposed to answer this? It truly depends on who you are and what you want to get out of your vacation! If you are a family looking for a lot of amenities and fun for your little ones on the seas, I suggest checking out Disney Cruise Line, Norwegian Cruise Line, Carnival, or Royal Caribbean.

If you are looking for an older crowd or are trying to access some of the more remote destinations of the world, search for Holland America, Celebrity Cruises, or Princess. All cruise lines are great, you will just have to figure out which one is perfect for your ideal destinations, budget, travel group, and time frame!

Can I bring a toddler or baby on a cruise?

Cruise lines typically allow anybody above the age of 6 months to board their cruise ships. That being said, you may want to consider what the cruising experience is going to be for your little ones.

I have an article going in-depth on cruising with toddlers , but to keep it short, your child’s experience will highly depend on the cruise line and ship you are traveling with. Some cruise lines offer amazing amenities for their younger passengers while others only offer babysitting services (at an extra expense).

Therefore, I would check with your cruise line to check what amenities are onboard to accommodate the youngest of passengers.

cruise vacation questions and answers

Should I use a travel agent for a cruise?

While I have never used a travel agent when cruising, I have heard of other people saving loads of money through them. With that in mind, I do suggest using a travel agent if you have one already for cruising.

You will be surprised by the deals and exclusive staterooms travel agents have access to when booking your cruise. Plus, they will be able to better explain the cruising process and all the logistics behind your cruising adventure.

Will I get seasick on a cruise?

It depends. I did not experience seasickness on my first cruise or on any of the cruises after. I think many people overestimate the movement onboard a cruise ship. They need to remember that cruises are literally the size of a small island.

That means you will typically not feel any movement during your cruising vacation unless you are sailing through a storm. If you are still worried, purchase some Sea-Bands or Dramamine medicine just in case any unwanted seasickness shows up on your journey.

Will I fall overboard on my cruise?

I can guarantee that you will not accidentally fall overboard on your cruise. As a safety precaution, all decks are wrapped with extremely strong railings and plexiglass guards to prevent any horrific accidents from happening onboard.

Cruise lines do not want you to fall overboard probably more than you do to avoid liability, so if you are hoping to not fall overboard, you definitely will not. Over in cruise cabin balconies, there are very tall railings installed to ensure passenger safety.

Do I need a passport to cruise?

Typically, yes. If you are traveling to any foreign port, you will need your passport. However, recently cruise lines have started to accept a passenger’s birth certificate and official government ID in lieu of a passport, so I recommend checking your cruise line’s policies to make sure you have all necessary documents ready for your cruising adventure.

I know that is not a clear answer, but this answer is constantly changing recently, so I highly suggest doing some simple investigation or call the cruise line to double-check what you need in regards to identification for your cruise.

What is the minimum drinking age on a cruise?

In general, you will have to be 21 to purchase alcohol on a cruise. However, when I looked deeper into this question when I was under 21, I found that some cruise lines have exceptions. For example, the Norwegian Cruise Line allows passengers between the ages of 18 and 21 to enjoy beer and wine if they have their parents sign a waiver.

Also, if you are sailing in Europe or Australia, your cruise line may allow anyone over the age of 18 to purchase any alcohol on board. At the end of the day, you should definitely check with your cruise line by reading their alcohol policy for your sailing (make sure to read the fine print!).

cruise vacation questions and answers

How do I pay for stuff onboard a cruise?

When you board your cruise ship, you will receive a personal identification card for the cruise line to keep track of you onboard. This card is tied to your onboard account, and therefore, anything you decide to purchase will be easy to pay for once you get off the ship at the end of your vacation.

Now, this can be both a blessing and a curse. You do not want to go crazy charging all your drinks and random purchases to your account and finish off your vacation disappointed with an obscene bill!

Do I need to pack beach towels for a cruise?

No! I mean you can if you want, but cruise ships are typically equipped with all the different types of towels you may need on your adventure. Of course, this means your stateroom will be stocked with all the typical hotel towels that you enjoy, but you will also have access to towels on the pool deck for all your swimming or sunbathing needs!

While you might have to check these towels back in through a ship crew member once you are done, you can definitely bring your stateroom towels into port if you want for the beach. Just make sure to bring it back to your stateroom when you return to avoid a fee at the end of your cruise journey.

How do I keep track of my cruise card?

This one is simple! You can either keep your cruise card in your wallet or, you can bring along or purchase a simple lanyard and cardholder for your cruising vacation to keep your ID on you at all times.

I prefer the lanyard method so I always have my ship card handy if I want to pick up a drink at the ship’s bar or am trying to leave quick to the cruise’s popular show. Plus, then you can hang it up when you enter your stateroom so you do not lose it and have to panic during your vacation.

But if you do happen to lose your cruise card, don’t worry, the onboard reception desk will be more than happy to help you create a new one!

Can I do laundry onboard a cruise ship?

Typically, yes. While you will want to pack your own laundry detergent for your dirty clothes, most cruise lines offer free do-it-yourself laundry machines onboard their ships.

These machines are usually super busy, so make sure to do your laundry at an ideal time (not when arriving back from the port or in the middle of the day).

If you prefer someone else to do your laundry or to have dry-cleaning services, you will have to pay an extra fee. However, this is another option for laundry onboard cruise ships.

Do I need to pay for drinks onboard a cruise ship?

If you are wondering about water, no, you will definitely not be expected to pay for drinkable water on your cruising journey. You also won’t typically have to pay for However, if you are looking to drink any soda or alcohol, it may be in your best interest to purchase a drink package.

You will be surprised how fast your bill will grow from those $6 drinks you purchase multiple times a day. Therefore, you should investigate your cruise line’s drink packages before you sail, and if you are interested, make sure to book it before you leave on vacation.

Most packages offered by cruise lines will be around 20% cheaper if you book them before your vacation.

cruise vacation questions and answers

Are cruises really all-inclusive?

Yes! Well, at least normally. When you book your cruise you will typically see what is all included in your fare. This normally includes all meals, entertainment, taxes, and your stateroom once you arrive onboard your cruise ship.

Watch out for special deals from various cruise lines that may have free added perks like an all-inclusive drink package, free excursion credits, or specialty dining options. These deals are typically running year-round, so it should not be hard to enhance your all-inclusive cruising experience!

What can I do on a cruise ship?

Oh my goodness, where do I start!? With the countless activities and spots on cruise ships, you will definitely find something on board that you love.

From pools to spas to libraries to nightclubs to tasty restaurants to theaters, you will literally never run out of things to do. Some ships even feature crazy once-in-a-lifetime opportunities like bumper cars, ziplining, racecars, and rock climbing in the middle of the ocean! If there is one thing you take away from this, you need to know that cruise ships are totally a destination on their own!

Often referred to as floating cities, many cruisers love cruising just for the amazing atmosphere and areas found onboard.

When should I arrive for my cruise?

I highly suggest booking your flight to arrive a day before your cruise leaves your departure city. Why? You do not want to be left stranded from your expensive vacation because of a delayed or canceled flight.

Plus, this way you can rewind and explore the departure city as part of your vacation before your cruising adventure. You can also stock up on sunscreen, shampoo, and other items that would have cost you extra space and weight on your flight in.

Do I need travel insurance on my cruise?

While technically cruise lines do not require their passengers to purchase travel insurance before their cruise, I highly suggest purchasing some before you leave. Why? Well, you will want to be covered if anything goes wrong during your trip.

Otherwise, when you experience a delayed or canceled flight that makes you miss your cruise departure, you will not be able to recoup any of the cost. Plus, if you get sick or have any other reason you have to miss your vacation, you will be able to get your money back.

How should I book my shore excursions?

You will want to book your shore excursions before you leave for your adventure. You can either book these through the cruise line or another 3rd party provider (usually cheaper).

Either way, make sure to get your shore excursions taken care of before you leave for your journey over the high seas as the internet can be very touchy or even non-existent. You will also want to print out any documents outlining your shore excursion stating if you have paid or not as the cruise line’s or 3rd party companies documents could be wrong.

If you forget to book shore excursions before your cruise, don’t worry. On most cruises you can book shore excursions on the ship, however, they can be more expensive and book out faster than if you plan your shore excursions before you leave.

cruise vacation questions and answers

How to find the best deals for cruises?

I use the website Vacations to Go to track all the best deals on cruises. They literally have all cruises you could imagine for any time of the year you are looking to sail. They have most if not all cruise lines for both river and ocean cruises and you can filter where you want to cruise to for how long.

Otherwise, if you prefer a professional’s expertise, look into using a travel agent who can find the best deals and staterooms. You will have to pay an extra cost for the luxury of the travel agent, however, this could potentially save you more than you invested if done right.

What documents do I need to bring on a cruise?

Your number one priority when preparing for your cruise should be getting all your necessary paperwork all in one spot. This means your flight and cruise confirmation information, any visas required by countries you are visiting, your passport (or any substitutes indicated by your cruise line), and shore excursion information.

You will not have much if any access to the internet during your cruise, so it is of the utmost importance to print out any documents that confirm what you have purchased for your vacation. This may also entail onboard packages or other cruise documents that the cruise lines could accidentally mess up.

What are some frequently forgotten items on cruises?

While I go in-depth on this subject in my guide to frequently forgotten items , you will want to make sure you are not missing some of the items that will make or break your cruising vacation. Some of these items include towel clips so you can reserve your poolside chair and magnetic hooks for your magnetic walls in your stateroom.

Other items include a cruise ship approved power strip for your stateroom and a compactable laundry bag. Make sure to bring these frequently forgotten items to make sure your cruise runs better than smoothly.

How do I get my luggage onboard a cruise ship?

Most new cruisers question how their luggage will make its way to its final destination in their stateroom.

Do not worry. Cruise ship crew members have this seemingly crazy process down to an art. After you drop your luggage off with the cruise employees during your check-in, they will make sure you do not have any restricted items in your stuff and then send it onboard.

From there, room stewards will sort through all the passengers’ luggage to make sure they arrive at the correct stateroom usually from 3-6 pm that same night. It is kind of incredible how these crew members can get thousands of suitcases to the right spot within hours!

What is a guaranteed cabin on a cruise?

A guaranteed cabin is just that, a guaranteed stateroom at a certain level of booking. This means that if you book a guaranteed oceanview cabin you will definitely have an oceanview.

However, the downside of these staterooms is you will not be able to choose the location of your cabin. That means you may be right next to the elevator or have an obstructed view. You are going to have to weigh if saving the extra cost is worth the potential of obstacles during your cruise.

Guaranteed cabins also normally do not have the same perks and packages as regular bookings (check with your cruise line).

cruise vacation questions and answers

Where does the crew stay onboard a cruise ship?

The crew members of a cruise ship stay on the lowest floor of the ship. While you may be wondering, “wait, I thought I was on the lowest level”, well I mean even lower than that. The crew area is off-limits for guests, and therefore, you can not access it through the main elevators or staircases.

Crew members actually have their own secret doorways you will notice on your cruise that transports them to another world of narrow hallways that provide them with quick transportation through the cruise ship.

Do I eat dinner with the same people every night?

While in the “old days” you would definitely eat with the same people every night at different restaurants, most cruise lines have now adopted a freestyle version of dining. This means, if you are looking to eat with the same people at the same time every night, you absolutely can!

Otherwise, you can eat with whoever you want, whenever you want, wearing whatever you want (usually). This means you can choose to have a table by yourself or share with other passengers onboard! If you are not into formal dining that can take hours, you can always head over to the onboard buffet where you can grab a quick bite to eat.

What kind of entertainment is on cruise ships?

While cruise lines are famous for their bingo and ballroom dancing activities, there are dozens of other forms of entertainment to enjoy on your cruising vacation.

From cooking demonstrations to ship tours to cocktail-making to glass-blowing you can find some of the most unique opportunities while sailing the deep blue. At night you can enjoy fun DJs, string duos, and jazz bands that can be found throughout the ship.

Many cruise lines also have large theaters where they put on their own Broadway-style shows for their passengers to enjoy at sea.

When should I book my cruise?

Typically, you should plan to book your cruise at least 60 days beforehand. This way, you can find the best prices on flights and get all the necessary documents ready before you leave.

However, if you live in an area like Florida where there are a bunch of cruise ports, you may find crazy deals on cruises if you book a few weeks in advance.

While I do not recommend this as you are not guaranteed anything, this can be a super quick way to save a crazy amount of money when traveling to your dream cruise ports.

Answers to All of Your First-Time Cruise Questions

Last updated: May 2nd, 2024

  • Find a Cruise

If you haven’t gone on a cruise before, you’ll have a lot of questions. You’re probably wondering what shore excursions are, how to prepare for your cruise, and what to pack.

Here are answers to some of the most common first-time cruise questions so you can set sail with confidence.

What should a first-time cruiser know?

Couple hanging out inside stateroom

How much information you want to soak up before your first cruise is entirely up to you. Some travelers don’t research their destinations beforehand and prefer to be spontaneous.

Others read up on cruise tips for first timers , schedule thrilling excursions, and pack a month before their cruise.

Couple going out of Celebrity Cruises ship

Beyond that, even if you aren’t doing any other research on your destinations, you’ll need to know what documents to bring and what time to arrive in port to board the ship. Your ship will sail off without you if you don’t have the proper documentation or if you’re late on embarkation day .

When taking a cruise, imagine that all timelines for boarding are pushed up by 30 minutes. That way, you won’t be late.

Airplane in the sky

Using Flights by Celebrity is another pro tip. You can book your flight on whichever airline you want (and even use your airline points). There’s a team of dedicated specialists on hand 24/7 to help you in the event of a flight delay or cancellation so you can still get to your cruise ship on time. There’s even a pay later option.

Where should I go on my first cruise?

Picturesque Pearl Island, Bahamas

If you have just a few days available and want to test the waters first, consider a short cruise to Key West and the Bahamas. These fun, approachable ports are perfect for first-time cruisers and boast great food, sunshine, and excursions for both unwinding and adventure.

If you’re a seasoned traveler and want to visit favorite destinations in a new way, consider a cruise to the Mediterranean . Instead of worrying about the logistics of planning transportation between places, a cruise ship acts as a floating hotel, whisking you from one stunning coastal city to the next while you indulge in world-class culinary creations and unwind in luxuriously appointed staterooms and suites.

If adventure is calling, cruises are some of the best ways to experience the towering glaciers of Alaska, the unique wildlife of the Galapagos, the icy landscapes of Antarctica, and the lush Hawaiian Islands.

How much cash should I bring on a cruise?

Family walking along shops in George Town

The amount of cash you’ll need to bring depends on where you go and whether you plan to go shopping or try new restaurants while you’re in port. Many places accept credit cards like Visa and Mastercard, especially in larger cities, and ATMs are abundant in most ports.

However, even if you prefer to pay with a card, it’s always a good idea to have some cash on hand—around the equivalent of $50-$100 USD.

Research the destinations you’re visiting to find out what the local currency is and if U.S. dollars are accepted. If not, exchange some cash beforehand so you’re not spending precious time in port trying to exchange currency.

What travel documents do I need?

Many international destinations require a passport. Even if your destination doesn’t require a passport, it’s always a good idea to bring one in case you need to return home quickly and need to book a flight to do so.

Woman holding a USA passport

A good rule of thumb is to bring along two forms of ID, one of which is your passport. If traveling internationally, do your research to find out if you need a visa for any of the countries you’re visiting.

If you require international air travel to get to your embarkation port, you will need to bring your passport, even if you’re flying to Canada or Mexico from the United States. If you’re planning on renting a car before or after your cruise, make sure to bring a valid driver’s license—and always check that it’s okay for you to drive in another country.

How do you pay for things on board?

Woman relaxing at a spa

If this is your first time on a cruise , you may think the payment setup on board is similar to a hotel—tell them your room number and sign a slip of paper, or opt to just pay with cash or your credit card.

On a cruise, it’s even easier. Your room key is also your onboard payment card. You’ll use your SeaPass card to pay for drinks, spa treatments, specialty restaurants, casino credit, and everything else you can think of. You can even track your expenses via the Celebrity Cruises app .

Couple talking to guest relations

On the last night of your cruise, you’ll get an itemized list of everything you purchased and the credit card on file will be charged that amount. If you have any questions about your bill or any items charged, you have time to speak with Guest Relations before your card is charged.

What should I pack for my first cruise?

Couple walking at a beach in Bermuda

This is one of the most common first-time cruise questions that new cruisers ask.

Your cruise packing list depends on the destinations you’re visiting. Tropical, sunny paradises have a distinctly different packing list than a cruise along Norway’s fjords .

For tropical destinations, essentials include swimsuits, sunglasses, cover-ups, sundresses, comfortable shoes for beach days or pool days, and a light sweater or jacket for cooler evenings. Tennis shoes for the gym or exploring cities in port are always a good idea. Leave shoes that pinch or blister at home.

Couple taking a selfie with glaciers as backdrop

If you’re traveling to a more wintry environment, layers are key. Bring materials like wool or heat-trapping clothing (not cotton or linen). Don’t forget the importance of a base layer, and bringing a lighter coat and a heavier coat that you can hike in is very important. A hat and sunglasses never hurt in cooler environments, too.

What should I wear on the first day of my cruise?

Couple hanging out by the bar

Comfort is crucial on the first day of your cruise, especially if you’ve been traveling all day. Comfortable pants and a tee are okay, especially on the first day when everyone is getting settled. Fortunately, with Celebrity Cruises Open Access, you can head straight to your stateroom upon boarding before exploring the ship. Bring a day bag or backpack with your essentials, an outfit change, or a swimsuit so you can take a dip in the pool.

What’s the first thing I should do on the ship?

Couple relaxing inside stateroom

Once you have your SeaPass card and complete your check-in, you’ll board the ship. You could head straight to one of the onboard restaurants for a meal, explore the ship and get your bearings, order a cocktail, or take a break in your stateroom or suite. The possibilities are endless!

What can I do on the cruise ship?

Couple on a picnic

There is no shortage of things to do on a cruise ship. Play volleyball in the pool or learn how to cook delicious dishes in a cooking demonstration. Play games at the casino or see evening entertainment and feats of song and dance at the onboard theater.

Dozens of onboard restaurants to choose from mean you’ll never go hungry onboard. Think interactive, next-level dining like Le Petit Chef, or experience the masterful touch of Global Culinary Brand Ambassador Chef Daniel Boulud.

Couple relaxing at Persian Garden Spa

Spa treatments and an onboard gym mean you never have to compromise your holistic health or wellness, whether you need a refreshed manicure or a full body massage.

Is cruise ship food good?

Couple eating al fresco on a cruise

Celebrity Cruises is committed to culinary excellence, which is demonstrated in each of our exciting onboard dining venues.

Complimentary dining inspired by global traditions transport you around the world on just one ship. Travel to Japan one night for sushi, and dine in an Italian trattoria for lunch the next day.

A platter of Luminae's buttered lobster

There are nearly two dozen complimentary and specialty restaurants for you to choose from, as well as options if you want to eat healthy on your cruise .

You can make reservations to dine in one of the numerous onboard specialty restaurants, or order room service and enjoy dining in on your veranda. Dress up for a night out or slip into a plush robe for ordering in.

What are shore excursions?

Shore excursions are activities that you can do during your days in port. Wine tasting in a Tuscan vineyard, scuba diving off the coast of Bermuda, and spotting Alaska’s majestic whales are just some of the unforgettable experiences you can have on a shore excursion.

Couple at a wine tasting in Italy

There are shore excursions for every kind of traveler and interest, whether you want to unwind on an exclusive beach, learn cooking techniques from local people, or explore a city with an experienced guide.

One of the benefits of booking shore excursions through us is that you don’t have to worry about keeping an eye on the time. Even if you’re late, your cruise ship will wait for you to arrive before sailing to the next port.

You can book shore excursions during your cruise, but if you already know what you want to do in port, it’s smart to book early, even if your cruise is still months away. The most popular shore excursions sometimes fill up before the cruise even begins.

How do I enjoy my first cruise?

Remember, you’re on vacation! Sit back and relax, strike up a conversation with new friends at dinner, and try new experiences. Put your phone on airplane mode and put joy at the top of your priority list every single day of your vacation.

10 Questions to Answer When Planning a Cruise

cruise vacation questions and answers

Planning a cruise vacation can be a challenge for those who either haven't traveled much or who haven't taken an organized tour or vacation. How do you plan that first cruise ? Family and friends often get together to discuss where they want to travel or vacation next. You might have heard cruise tales and seen cruise vacation pictures of your family and friends, or read in magazines and online about how much fun (and economical) cruising can be. If you want to "take the plunge" and go on your first cruise, where do you start?

First-time cruisers should find a good travel agent who is experienced in booking cruises. However, before you contact the travel agency or cruise line, you will need to have the answers to the ten questions covered in this article.

After you have answered the following ten questions, you will be ready to work with a travel agent to select a cruise line and cruise ship.

Who Is Going on the Cruise?

This should be the easiest question, so let's start with it. All age groups are welcome and planned for on a cruise ship. You will be able to find a cruise that will give any age group from toddler to great-grandmother a memorable vacation. Families with teenagers often say they have found it to be the best family vacation yet. If you don't have kids or don't want to be around them while on vacation, there are some cruise ships that are almost adult only or won't have many children.

How Much Are You Prepared to Spend?

Let's discuss minimums. There are NO maximums. There used to be a "rule of thumb" that you needed to budget about $100/day/person (exclusive of airfare). That rule still seems fairly reasonable, although many cruise ships now charge extra for items that used to be included in the fare. You can decrease your budgeted cost some by shopping around or by

  • Having more than two persons per cabin,
  • Being conservative and booking early (more than nine months in advance),
  • Being a risk-taker and booking late (less than 2 months in advance).

The minimum price on a "mainstream" cruise line for a Caribbean or Mediterranean cruise seems to average about $600 - $1000 per week. Alaska and Northern Europe are usually higher due to the shorter cruise season.

How Long Is Your Vacation?

If you have less than a week, you are probably restricted to the Bahamas, Mexico, parts of the Caribbean, or a "cruise to nowhere". A "cruise to nowhere" allows passengers to cruise for a long weekend out of port into the ocean and then return. No ports of call are made by the ship, but you can get a feel for what a cruise is like.

A week's vacation will open up the Caribbean to you, and depending on where you live, you can even get to Europe, Hawaii, Alaska, or the South Pacific.

If you can squeeze out ten days to two weeks, you will have many more options--including all seven of the continents.

One thing to remember--the longer the cruise, the more you will need to pack, or you might have to do laundry while away.

When Do You Want to Travel?

Cruises are usually a little cheaper in the spring or fall. Students of economics will know that this is entirely due to supply and demand. Kids are in school, and weather can sometimes be uncertain. Winter used to be considered the only "high" season for tropical locations like the Caribbean. However, summertime costs are not far behind due to the large numbers of families with children, college students, and others who have "forced summer vacations".

Some people are fearful of fall hurricanes, but cruise ships can deal with those by altering their itinerary, although you may see different destinations than what you planned.

Some locations have short cruising seasons. For example, if you are going to Alaska or northern Europe , you will have to cruise between May and September. If you are going to Antarctica , November through February is the season.

Going to the tropics is a little easier. The temperature will not vary much with the seasons. What does vary is the rainfall. The dry season for most tropical locations like the Caribbean and Hawaii is in the summer, and the rainy season is in the winter. This does NOT mean it will rain all of the time. You just need to be prepared for more rain. Afternoon showers are more common. Of course, if you are coming from Canada or the northern U.S., some warm rainfall is not a problem if you have left piles of snow at home!

If you are going to the Mediterranean , summer is the high season, but some ships cruise there year-round.

Where Do You Want to Cruise?

Choosing a cruise destination is often the most difficult decision for future-cruisers. Remember that the earth is over 3/4 covered with water. This means that you can reach every continent and many countries via cruise ship. Even land-locked locations such as central Europe, Russia, or the Yangtze River in China and the Mekong River in Southeast Asia can often be reached on a river cruise.

Every cruise destination has its own special atmosphere and diverse nature. The weather or cruise ship will help determine what you need to pack for the cruise.

What Types of Things Do You Like to Do?

One of the best things about a cruise is the wide variety of activities available. You can do everything from sit on the deck and enjoy the view to more strenuous activities like hiking, biking, zip lining, scuba diving, or other water sports.

European cruises often feature city or museum tours and other cultural opportunities. Ships dock in the major cities of Europe for a day, and passengers go ashore to see the marvelous historical and cultural sites of the city. Some European cruises include outdoor activities such as hiking, but most focus on the great cities of Europe.

Tropical destinations like the Caribbean and South Pacific cruises feature island tours and beach and ocean sports. History and museum tours are a much smaller part of the shore experience.

Many cruise lines' will provide you a list of shore activities offered before you book, either via the Internet or from your travel agent. You normally do not have to decide on the shore activities before you sail, but you may be asked to book the shore excursions not long after embarkation. Some shore excursions have a limited number of slots, so if you absolutely must have a private tour of the Vatican, a helicopter ride over a volcano, or go scuba diving over a Caribbean shipwreck, ask if you can book space in advance.

The activities director will give passenger briefings on the shore excursions available after you get onboard, but it's good to have a general idea of what you want to do in each port before you sail.

What Type of Cabin Do You Want/Need?

Cabin selection is normally a function of how much you want to spend. However, many cruisers will book the cheapest room available at the time of booking, preferring to save their money for shopping or shore excursions. Deck plans for most ships are available in hard copy from the cruise line, travel agent, or you can view them online. If you book early enough, you will sometimes get an upgrade to a better cabin. You might also note that on most ships a cabin mid-ship and on a lower deck will "ride better" in rough seas than one near the bow or on a higher deck.

If you are on a one-way Alaskan cruise , you might want to select a cabin on the shore side. However, the ship's captain will usually turn the ship around in the glacier-filled bays and give everyone an opportunity to see the spectacular scenery from their cabins.

A few years ago, we discovered balconied-cabins, and now we may never want to cruise again without one! Many of the newer ships feature private verandahs or balconies on most cabins, so they are getting less expensive. When determining your cruise budget, be sure to check to see how much more one of these cabins might be. It might be worth your money! Beware--you might get spoiled like me and look for a balcony first!

When Do You Like to Eat Dinner?

Dinner time varies with the cruise line or ship. There are three possibilities--early seating (about 6:00 pm), late seating (about 8:00-8:30 pm) or open seating (anytime within a given time frame like 5:30-9:30). Note that some mega-ships have added a third fixed seating and made early seating earlier and late seating later.

Most ships will give you a choice of seating. There are advantages to both. Early seating might mean you have to get up earlier (although most ships have open seating for breakfast and lunch). It also means that you might have to rush for dinner if you are on a shore excursion that lasts until the late afternoon, or can't tear yourself away from the beach or pool. The advantage to early seating is that you can then go to the shows after dinner and have more time for nightlife before bed.

Late seating allows you to have plenty of time to get ready for dinner. However, if you don't finish dinner until after 10:00 pm, you might either miss the show or part of the nightlife.

Open seating is available on almost all cruise lines. Most mainstream cruise lines offer both fixed seating and open seating. When booking your cruise, you will need to select one of these options. If open seating is very important to you, be sure to discuss this with your travel agent when booking the cruise.

Another note about dining. On a ship with assigned seating, you will also be asked what table size you prefer. Most ships have tables for two, four, six, or eight (and sometimes ten). Oftentimes, the numbers of "two-tables" are limited, so if you "want to be alone", be sure to tell your travel agent or cruise line in advance.

Do You Like to Dress Up?

Mainstream cruise lines used to always have one or two dress-up nights on a seven-day cruise where passengers would wear formal or semi-formal attire.

Along with the general trend towards more relaxed dress, some cruise lines have started to feature "resort casual" or "country club casual" dress every night. On these ships, they probably won't care if you want to be more formal, but you might feel awkward if you showed up without a tie for a semi-formal dinner on a more traditional ship. If you want to eat dinner in shorts or very casual attire, you need to look towards small sailing ships or have dinner in your cabin or in one of the casual buffets most mainstream ships have.

Look at the brochure and website pictures and read the brochures/schedules carefully on ships that you are considering. If all of the pictures of people dining show everyone in semi-formal wear, then you will want to take along either your black suit, tux or white dinner jacket. Ladies will need either a silky suit, cocktail dress, or something "glittery." If you want to leave that tie and other semi-formal wear at home, then look for cruise ships with a more relaxed dress for dinner.

Many women (not men) love dressing up for dinner, but hate having to pack the extra "stuff". With all the airlines strictly enforcing the suitcase weight guidelines, women should probably only take one or two evening outfits and just wear them more than once or mix and match the pieces.

How Will You Get to Your Cruise Ship?

Flying or driving are the two most popular modes of transportation to the ship's embarkation point. Driving is under your control, but might not be reasonable unless you live within a day's drive of an embarkation point.

Most cruise lines will sell you a combination "fly-cruise" package. This often is much easier, but you will need to compare the cruise line airfare price to booking your flight independently.

The "fly-cruise" price will usually include transfers between the ship and the airport, which can sometimes add quite a bit to the cost if you fly on your own. In addition, the cruise line will usually transfer your luggage directly to your cabin. For cruisers who over-pack (you know who you are!), this can be a big help. The other reason it is a good idea to let the cruise line take care of your flight is that sometimes the ship will be held up for late arriving flights. If you are on a cruise line booked flight, there will probably be other cruisers on your plane. The more of you who are "in the same boat", the more likely the ship's departure will be delayed if your flight is late arriving.

If you do choose to use frequent-flyer miles for a flight or want to book independently, you might want to get to the departure city a day early to avoid the stress of worrying about flight problems, whether they be weather or mechanical.

Now that you have answered these 10 questions, you are ready to call a travel agent and choose a cruise line and ship.

Transportation between major cities is easy using the trains. An extensive network connects all the major cities. It is a convenient and comfortable way to get around. While in Venice, take a gondola ride through the city’s canals and visit St. Mark’s Basilica.

Venice to Milan

Finish your trip to Milan, known for its strong cultural and artistic traditions. The city is home to many world-class museums and galleries and, of course, fashion and design. Many international fashion houses have headquarters in the town, and it’s the haute couture capital of the world.

18. I can decide! Cinque Terre or Portofino as a shore excursion?

Between the famous ports of stops of Genoa and La Spezia on the Italian Riviera are two popular destinations for cruise guests, Cinque Terre and Portofino. The best shore excursion for you depends on your interests and what you hope to get out of your visit. Let’s compare the two to help you decide:

Cinque Terre

Cinque Terre is a group of five small picturesque villages located along the coast. The villages are connected by hiking trails that offer stunning views of the Mediterranean Sea. A shore excursion to Cinque Terre is an excellent option for travelers who enjoy hiking, nature, and beautiful landscapes. The area can easily be explored using the local train, which stops at the villages. You’ll need to be able to walk hilly streets and be easily mobile to enjoy this destination.

Portofino is a bucket list destination for many wanting to visit the Italian Riviera. Portofino is known for its beautiful harbor, high-end boutiques, and celebrity visitors. It is an excellent option for travelers who enjoy luxury and glamour, as well as unique shopping, exceptional cuisine, and fantastic scenery.

The welcoming locals will be keen to share the diverse culture and cuisine and the natural beauty of their island.

A cruise stop at port Valletta, Malta, is a fantastic destination and one of our favorite stops in the Mediterranean.

  • BEFORE CRUISE
  • EMBARKATION DAY
  • DURING CRUISE
  • PASSPORT, INSURANCE & IMPORTANT INFORMATION

When can I expect to receive my final documents?

Cruise vouchers will be sent to you via mail or email 2-3 weeks prior to departure. Please note that cruise tickets will not be released by the cruise line until after each guest has completed the pre-cruise registration. Pre-cruise registration can generally be completed after final payment is made.

When will my airline itinerary be made available?

Air arrangements purchased through the cruise line are generally made available about 3 weeks prior to departure. Please note that air schedules are booked at the discretion of the cruise line and cannot be changed. Anyone requiring special itineraries/air carriers must arrange for custom air prior to final payment. The minimum charge for custom air itineraries ranges from approximately $35-$100 per person and additional charges may apply. Custom air should be booked as early as possible to insure flight availability. It is the traveler's responsibility to confirm seat assignments and other special services, such as special meals or wheelchair assistance directly with the airline.

What should I pack?

First and foremost, dress for comfort. Daily life aboard ship and in ports of call is laid-back and casual. You are encouraged to wear whatever makes you feel most comfortable: sportswear, shorts, slacks, sundresses and so on. Warmer temperatures call for clothing made of lightweight, breathable fabrics. For cooler temperatures we suggest casual clothes that can be layered easily. On some days you may need a raincoat and waterproof hat or umbrella. Gloves are a good idea as well. Footwear should include comfortable walking shoes for visits ashore and sandals or rubber-soled shoes for strolling on deck.

In the evening the dress codes varies according to the ship that you are sailing on. Most ships now offer a variety of restaurants to choose from and the dress codes for those restaurants will vary from casual to smart casual to formal. The suggested dress code in the ships' main dining rooms is generally sport shirts and slacks for men and sundresses or pants for women although some guests prefer to dress up for the occasion and are welcome to do so. In specialty restaurants and on the luxury cruise ships, jackets and ties for men are suggested for men and cocktail dresses or a nice pantsuit outfit would be appropriate for women. Tuxedos are no longer the norm for formal nights as even on the most formal of ships, a dark suit and tie are fine for the dressiest occasions. Tuxedos are usually available for rental if preferred. Again, these are guidelines and your evening attire is left up to your discretion.

Can I make restaurant and other onboard reservations in advance?

Many cruise lines now offer a variety of dining options including specialty restaurants. As these restaurants tend to be smaller it is recommended to make reservations in advance during the pre-cruise registration process. Reservations can also be made in advance for the Spa and for some other onboard activities and entertainment venues.

Should I reconfirm my airline reservations?

Most airlines require passengers to check in online on their website 24 hours prior to the flight departure time and to print out boarding passes. At this time you can set your profile preferences to be notified about schedule changes either by email, text or a phone call. Please note that while you need to check in 24 hours prior to your flight departure, boarding passes generally cannot be obtained in advance for international flights as the airlines need to be able to verify the validity of your passport and other boarding documents. Plan to be at the airline counter at least 1-1/2 hours before flight time for domestic flights and 2-1/2 hours before flight time for international flights to account for any possible delays.

Is parking available at the pier?

Parking available at most of the piers and the rates vary by location. Visit our Cruise Port Parking page for links and additional information about the parking facilities for specific ports. Please note that at some piers only cash is accepted.

How do transfers work?

Most cruise lines include transfers between the airport and the pier on embarkation/disembarkation day if you have purchased an air/sea package directly with them. Passengers providing their own air must get their own transportation to/from the pier. Prepaid transfers can be purchased separately from most cruise lines. Flight information must be provided to the cruise line with final payment if separate transfers have been purchased.

What are the boarding procedures?

Generally, you will be allowed to board two or three hours before the ship sails. Keep in mind that you must be on the ship at least one hour before departure, and the gangway will be pulled thirty minutes before sailing.

Upon completion of check-in, you will receive a guest identification card. This card will serve as your identification on-board and will be used as your payment method for all onboard charges. In addition, it will also serve as your identification for security procedures when embarking and disembarking the ship and when making purchases on board.

As you walk up the gangway, a member of the cruise staff will welcome you aboard. Your luggage will be delivered to your cabin shortly after it arrives at the ship. You will only have your hand luggage while boarding so be sure to keep important articles such as medicines, cameras, diapers and other necessary items in your carry-on luggage. It's also a good idea to pack your bathing suit in your carry-on luggage so that you can enjoy the pool area while waiting for your luggage to be delivered. Once you are on board you are free to explore the ship. Refreshments are available during embarkation and most cruise lines offer a nice buffet lunch (depending on the departure time).

What is the visitor policy?

For security reasons most cruise lines have implemented a "no visitor" policy aboard their vessels.

Can I use my hair dryer, shaver or other electronic equipment?

Most ships have 110-volt outlets in the staterooms however nearly all ships now feature hair-dryers in the cabins. While traveling outside of the US a converter and an adapter is usually necessary for most electronic devices. Some ships sailing outside of North America offer both 110 and 220-volt outlets. Most hotels outside of the US only offer 220-volt outlets.

Can we stay in touch with the outside?

  • Mass Media: Most ships have a daily newsletter with news, headlines, selected stock quotes and sports scores. Staterooms on most ships are equipped with televisions featuring a variety of news and entertainment channels.
  • Telephone: While most ships have telephones in passenger cabins, you can also call someone on shore through the ship's radio operator while at sea. Please note that the costs for ship to shore calling can be quite high. You can make phone calls from most ports and most cellular carriers offer international calling plans as well as Cellular at Sea plans that you can purchase for the specific time period before you depart for your trip. If you plan of making phone calls while abroad then pre-purchasing an international calling plan from your cellular carrier can help save you money. Please note that the Caribbean is considered international and roaming charges will apply if an international calling plan is not purchased. Please contact your specific mobile carrier for detailed information about the calling plans that they offer.
  • Fax and Internet: Many ships have fax capabilities and internet access. If you plan on using internet while onboard it is often less expensive to purchase an internet plan. Internet packages vary according to the amount of minutes purchased and can be used by most cell phones, laptops or other mobile devices. Information about specific plans can usually be found in your stateroom or at guest services.

What about tipping?

Gratuities vary by cruise line and are usually added to your shipboard account. A general rule of thumb is to plan for about $12.50 to $15.00 per person per day which includes gratuities for your room steward and dining room staff. On many cruise lines it is now possible to prepay the above gratuities. Certainly, if you have received exceptional service from an employee and want to give an additional tip as a token of appreciation, then cash can certainly be offered. On most cruise lines a 15%-18% gratuity is automatically added to beverage purchases, spa packages and other service related items which you may adjust according to services rendered. Most luxury cruise lines and river cruise lines include tipping in the price and will advise you accordingly.

Will I have a shipboard account?

Most cruise lines have set up a "cashless" system designed to make your life on board as simple as possible. You simply sign a receipt for each of your on-board purchases and then settle your shipboard account at the end of the cruise. Cash, VISA, American Express, MasterCard, Discover, and personal or traveler's checks are accepted as payment on most cruise lines.

What is the shipboard check cashing policy?

Most cruise lines will cash traveler's checks. Personal checks cannot be cashed and cash cannot be drawn from your shipboard account.

Are there laundry services aboard?

Almost all cruise ships have laundry facilities and a great many provide dry-cleaning services. There is, however, an additional charge for professional laundry and dry-cleaning services. Many ships also have self-service launderettes.

Can we celebrate a "special" day?

All cruise lines will make your "special" day special. Most will even treat you to a complimentary cake and a chorus of Happy Whatever to honor the occasion.

Are there medical services onboard?

Virtually every cruise ship (except for some smaller vessels operating in coastal waters) has a fully-equipped medical facility and staff to handle almost any emergency.

Your prescription medication should be kept close at hand in your purse or carry-on bag rather than in your checked luggage. Be sure to bring a sufficient supply of medication and transport it in the original container. It is also a good idea to carry a written list of your medications in case they are lost. The list should include the name of the drug, dosage, and times taken.

Please note that charges are usually incurred for services provided by onboard medical personnel. This is another reason why the purchase of travel insurance is very strongly suggested.

Do the cruise lines offer shore excursions?

Shore excursions can be purchased in advance with the Cruise.com Shore Excursion Department or with the cruise line. Shore excursions will help you make the most of your time in port and provide you with the best transportation and guide services available. Excursions can range from simple walking tours to zip-lining, helicopter rides and even custom shore excursions.

Do I need travel insurance?

Travel insurance can be purchased through the cruise line or Allianz Global Assistance prior to final payment with Cruise.Com. prior to final payment with Cruise.Com. The price will vary depending on the cost and length of your cruise. The purchase of travel insurance is strongly recommended. Once you are within the final payment period the cruise lines will impose strict cancellation penalties as outlined in their brochures. These penalties will not be waived even for medical reasons. Travel Insurance plans may also provide emergency medical benefits for covered illness or injury that occurs during your trip. Most personal insurance policies, including Medicare, do not provide coverage outside the U.S. Please contact Cruise.Com for further details.

Do I need a passport?

AIR TRAVEL All U.S. citizens including children must present a passport or other approved travel document when entering the United States by air. U.S. citizens can present a passport, NEXUS card at airports with NEXUS kiosks, U.S. military ID with travel orders, or a U.S. Merchant Mariner Document when on official business.

CRUISE TRAVEL U.S. citizens returning home from Canada, Mexico, the Caribbean or Bermuda, by land or sea, will be required to present one of the travel documents listed below.

U.S. Passport – This is an internationally recognized travel document that verifies a person’s identity and nationality. It is accepted for travel by air, land and sea.

U.S. Passport Card – This is a new, limited-use travel document that fits in your wallet and costs less than a U.S. Passport. It is only valid for travel by land and sea.

Trusted Traveler Program Cards – NEXUS, SENTRI or FAST enrollment cards can speed your entry into the U.S. and are issued only to pre-approved, low-risk travelers. The cards are valid for use at land or sea; the NEXUS card can be used in airports with a NEXUS kiosk.

Note: Cruise Ship Passengers: U.S. citizens on closed-loop cruises (cruises that begin and end at the same U.S. port) will be able to enter or depart the country with a birth certificate and government-issued photo ID. Please be aware that you may still be required to present a passport to enter the countries your cruise ship is visiting. Check with your cruise line to ensure you have the appropriate documents.

U.S. and Canadian citizen children under age 16 arriving by land or sea from contiguous territory may also present an original or copy of his or her birth certificate, a Consular Report of Birth Abroad, a Naturalization Certificate, or a Canadian Citizenship Card.

U.S. and Canadian citizen children under age 19 arriving by land or sea from contiguous territory and traveling with a school group, religious group, social or cultural organization, or sports team, may also present an original or copy of his or her birth certificate, a Consular Report of Birth Abroad, a Naturalization Certificate, or a Canadian Citizenship Card.

The group should be prepared to present a letter on organizational letterhead with the following information:

  • The name of the group and supervising adult;
  • A list of the children on the trip, and the primary address, phone number, date of birth, place of birth, and name of at least one parent or legal guardian for each child; and
  • A written and signed statement of the supervising adult certifying that he or she has obtained parental or legal guardian consent for each participating child

These rules, requirements and regulations became effective on June 1, 2009 and replace all previous requirements. Cruise.com is not liable for any fees or penalties if passengers are denied boarding for failure to provide adequate documentation of citizenship.

OUR RECOMMENDATION Cruise.com strongly recommends that all guests travel with a valid passport during their cruise. This greatly assists guests who may need to fly out of the United States to meet their ship at the next available port should they miss their scheduled embarkation in a U.S. port; guests entering the U.S. at the end of their cruise; and guests needing to fly to the U.S. before their cruise ends, because of medical, family, personal or business emergencies, missing a ship's departure from a port of call, involuntary disembarkation from a ship due to misconduct, or other reasons.

Guests who need to fly to the United States before their cruise ends will likely experience significant delays and complications related to booking airline tickets and entering the United States if they do not have a valid U.S. passport with them.

All Non-U.S. citizens: Any non-US citizen who has previously been admitted to the United States for permanent residence must carry their passport and Alien Registration Receipt Card. All other non-U.S./non-Canadian citizens must have valid passports and any necessary visas. Such guests should verify carefully the existing identification requirements for their particular travel situation, as these requirements may change.

IMPORTANT: ALL guests should carefully verify the existing identification requirements for their particular travel situation DIRECTLY WITH THE CRUISE LINE OR THEIR LOCAL CONSULATES OR EMBASSIES, as these requirements may change. Guests arriving for embarkation without proper documentation may be denied boarding and will not be entitled to a refund.

  • Common Cruise Questions

Before heading out on your cruise take a look at these frequently asked questions to make sure that you know what to expect while on-board:

Sometimes things go wrong and you need to cancel your trip . If so, you should notify the cruise line immediately. The refund and cancellations they offer you are different depending on the cruise line you use. Some cruise lines even have penalties if you book really close to the sail date. You could get a full refund if you cancel within the designated cancellation period. Most cruises will not make exceptions no matter the reason you have to cancel, so make sure you get insurance in case you have an emergency and always review the cancellation policy before you book your cruise.

If you have booked your cruise, you can set a price alert on our website (for more details click here). We will send you an alert if the prices drop after you book. Then you can contact the cruise line to try to get the difference back or to get an onboard credit to use while on your trip.

Most of the time, cruise lines are not truly all-inclusive even if they say they are. The reason for this exception is that alcohol and soft drinks are usually extra, specialty restaurants cost extra, and they offer paid entertainment options. But you can easily find more about the true cost of a cruise in our How much does a cruise cost? guide.

If you book your cruise when there is mild weather and seas are steady, chances are you won't feel a lot of rocking on the ship. The larger the ship, the less likely it is that you will actually get seasick. However, if you are seriously prone to motion sickness there are things you can do to prevent it, including selecting cabins far away from the majority of the motion. Cabins located on lower decks and in the middle of the ship usually have the least movement. Choosing a large cruise ship size and a cruise ship cabin in the middle of the ship will thus help you to enjoy your cruise without worries.

Just the same as purchasing food at a restaurant in town, you will get what you pay for. If you're in the main dining room on a budget cruise line, do not be disappointed when your dinner doesn’t feature special delicacies or isn’t served with a flourish. On the other hand, certain luxury cruise lines have top rated restaurants which rival those you would find in a big city. If food is of great importance to you, then there are some cruises for real gourmets and certain destinations for foodies as well.

The number of passengers on your ship, when you are traveling, and where you are going will directly influence how crowded the ship is. Larger vessels will obviously be much more crowded. Weekend cruises which depart on Friday nights are much more crowded because they are full of often younger crowds squeezing a weekend getaway into packed work or school schedules.

Of course it depends on the ship, but probably not. Some ships are large enough to house shopping malls and thousands of people. They are so big that you will literally be inside a floating city. Even small ships can feel comfortable thanks to well-designed layouts and programming schedules.

Yes, most cruises have a minimum age requirement but these vary based on cruise line.

This depends on the cruise line you book, but generally speaking the answer is yes. Family cruises are a great option to get a vacation for every family member no matter what age. Larger cruises in particular are more appealing to families with multiple children because they offer different age-appropriate entertainment and activities, and they typically have babysitting services.

Many cruises have a minimum age of six months from the date of sale for babies. Check to see which amenities are provided for different ages before you book.

The age at which you pay full price for a cruise varies based on cruise line. There are many kid-friendly cruises which let a baby sail for free or at a heavily-discounted rate. MSC Cruises is a great line for families because all kids under the age of 11 sail for free.

This depends on the cruise line. Most of them allow you to travel when pregnant up to your third trimester. Most of the cruise lines might not be able to accommodate you if you go into early delivery or if you have an emergency which is why their policies might not allow it during the third trimester.

Transfers are the mode of transportation provided between an airport and a cruise pier. These can be set up ahead of time, usually for a small fee, although some provide you with complimentary transfers if you book the air and sea packages.

Air and sea packages are when you book your flight and your cruise at the same time. The biggest advantage to this is that you can book everything at once and you can add extra protection in case you have a flight delay or cancellation. Therefore it is a stress-free possibility to travel to your cruise ship . Transfers may also be included in air and sea packages.

Understand that many cruise lines have limited space for luggage so you might be able to bring more on your airline when flying to the port then you will on the actual ship. Check with the storage limits for the cabin you have booked. With little preparation and a good packing list you can be sure that you don't forget anything important and don't pack anything unnecessary - especially for short cruises .

There is no universal payment policy across all cruise lines. It is becoming increasingly common, especially on larger cruise lines, to use your cruise ID card for all on-board purchases. Your cruise ID card is linked to your onboard account. You can choose to deposit cash into this account when you start your cruise or you can simply connect to your debit or credit card. However, not all cruise lines have adopted this policy, so it is best to check with your individual cruise line ahead of time.

Every cruise requires you to arrive at least one hour before departure. It is best that you arrive the recommended two hours before departure so you have adequate time to park your car, especially if the parking at the pier is crowded, and you will have time to properly check in and board the ship.

On almost all ships there is new technology so that you can make cell phone calls no matter where you are but sometimes you will face international roaming charges. As for Internet you can often stay connected 24 hours a day on almost every ship. There is a wireless network offered in many state rooms and public areas throughout the ship. Please check if there are extra fees to use the Internet.

Traditional dining means that you have a set schedule for the time you eat and you are seated with the same guests every time. Many passengers like traditional dining because it offers personalized service from waiters.

There are typically three dress codes for ships: casual, informal, and formal. You can look at the dining information and dress code policies for each cruise to figure out what you need to wear based on where you are dining that evening. If you just want to be casual about your dining options the entire time you are on the ship, you can choose buffet style restaurants or use room service.

The 5 Most Common Cruise Questions

Updated : April 23, 2024

AAA Travel Editor, CW

A cruise can be a wonderful way to see the world and relax at the same time. But you might feel a little bit like a ship out of water before taking your first one. In this article, we share five of the most common cruise questions before you decide which cruise line is right for you.

1. What is free on the ship?

A cruise ship is like a floating city. Unlike an actual city, however, everything is designed with your enjoyment in mind — and there are many free things to see and do . For example, all cruises will include the cost of your cabin, meals in the main dining room, and entertainment like shows and workshops. You'll also have complimentary access to a roof deck pool on cruises to tropical destinations.

Of course, plenty of things also come with a fee. For example, you might have to pay for souvenirs, specialty restaurants, alcoholic beverages, spa treatments and shore excursions. But don't worry, there's still plenty of fun to be had without spending a dime. You can enjoy the pool, take in the ocean views, people-watch on deck, or explore the ship.

2. Do I have to tip the workers?

While there's no hard and fast rule, you are generally expected to tip the workers on a cruise ship. These workers provide various services, from serving food and drinks to cleaning your room to providing entertainment. They work long hours for relatively little pay, so a tip is a way of showing your appreciation for their hard work.

Of course, how much you tip is up to you, and you may find that some workers are more deserving of a tip than others. Ultimately, whether or not to tip the workers on a cruise ship is up to you, but remember that these workers rely on tips to make ends meet. A small gesture of appreciation can go a long way if you can afford it.

3. What is the dress code on a cruise ship?

Each ship is different, but in general, there are some dress code rules that you should consider before taking your first cruise. For example, while casual attire is acceptable during the day, passengers are expected to dress more formally for dinner. This means no shorts, T-shirts or flip-flops.

In addition, most cruise lines have at least one formal night per voyage, where guests are asked to wear suits, cocktail dresses or evening gowns. Whether you're headed to the buffet or the ballroom, be sure to check the cruise ship dress code and pack accordingly. It's also advisable to review your cruise line's luggage policy in advance so that you know what size and type of bags are allowed.

4. Will I need my passport for excursions?

If you're considering booking a cruise ship excursion, you might be wondering if you need to bring your passport. The answer, unfortunately, is, “It depends.” While some cruise ship excursions will not require a passport, others will. It all depends on the country you're visiting and the excursion itself.

For example, if you're taking a tour of a nearby island, you'll likely need to show your passport to get off the ship. However, if you're staying on the mainland, you may not need it.The U.S. that all cruise guests have a passport, even if the ship is a “closed-loop.” This is a preemptive measure in case of emergency. Generally, requirements vary by ship and itinerary.

Before you book your excursion, check with your cruise line to see what documentation is required. To play it safe, plan to get your passport before your cruising dates.

5. What isn't allowed on a cruise ship?

While cruising often is seen as a time to relax and forget about rules, there are many regulations passengers are expected to understand and follow. For starters, most cruise ships prohibit passengers from bringing their own alcohol onboard. In addition, some cruise lines have age restrictions, so families with young children may need to look for a specific type of cruise. And, of course, there are always the obvious prohibitions, such as smoking and illegal drugs. So while a cruise may be the perfect way to relax and escape the everyday grind, it may be necessary to do some legwork before setting sail. For example, , aka lifeboat drills, offer life-saving information and must occur either in-person or via app within 24 hours of departure.

Read through your cruise's rules and regulations on the company's website before departure. Remember that you are bound to the laws of the flag that the cruise ship flies as well as the laws of any nation that the ship docks in.

10 Questions to Ask Yourself When Planning a Cruise

March 15, 2022 //  by  Gwen Engler //   2 Comments

Considering planning a cruise vacation? Congratulations! Cruising is a great way to see the world. You spend your days exploring scenic and exciting port cities, then return to your ship for a gourmet dinner, world-class entertainment, and a comfortable bed that literally rocks you to sleep. What could be better?

One of the few downsides to planning a cruise is that it can be confusing. There are so many cruise lines, so many itineraries, and so many stateroom categories – that it can be hard to pick one, or even understand the differences between all of them.

That’s why I’m here to help! Below I have compiled ten questions to ask yourself when planning a cruise. Thinking through each of these will help you make the best decisions possible for your vacation. If you’re still overwhelmed – or just want some personalized advice and expert guidance – let’s chat ! I spent three years working in the cruise industry in Alaska and am currently partnered as a registered agency with most major cruise lines. Together, we’ll find you the perfect cruise so you can set off on an unforgettable, stress-free vacation.

So what are you waiting for?!

1.) Where do I want to go?

These days, you can cruise almost anywhere there’s water. Two of the most popular cruise destinations are the Caribbean and Alaska , but you can also cruise to Europe , South America , Asia , the South Pacific, Antarctica, and more.

I personally tend to think that some locations make better cruise destinations than others. I like to use cruises to hit places where you can see a lot in a short time, like a small island, or where visiting by ship allows you to experience a place that would otherwise be difficult, time-consuming, or very expensive to access, like Glacier Bay in Alaska.

Others – like Buenos Aires, Argentina , or Tokyo, Japan – have so much more to offer than you could ever experience in a single day. Especially if the destination is somewhere you’re really dying to see, it might make sense to visit it individually instead of on a cruise to give it the time it deserves.

2.) How many days do I want to spend at sea?

Cruise itineraries generally offer a mix between port days, when you’re docked somewhere and can leave the ship to explore, and days at sea, where you’re sailing from one place to another. Days at sea allow you to take full advantage of your ship’s amenities, including the spa, restaurants, lounges, shopping, theater, and special activities. ( Ziplining, go-karts, or waterslides, anyone? ) Plus, there are usually plenty of programs, tours, and entertainment going on to keep you as busy as you’d like to be.  Days at sea are also perfect for getting a little rest and relaxation, as you can laze away the hours by the pool or on your stateroom balcony without worrying that you’re missing something fun on land.

Some people, including yours truly, like their cruise itinerary to be heavy on the number of port days, with maybe one day at sea during a weeklong trip. Other people really love the shipboard experience and want multiple days to relax and enjoy all the ship’s amenities.

Think about what you want out of your vacation and seek out itineraries that seem to have a promising balance between port days and days at sea.

3.) Do I want a big ship or a small ship?

Cruise ships vary tremendously in size, and the size of the ship can have a big impact on your cruise experience. Generally speaking, the larger the ship, the more amenities and unique experiences you’ll find onboard. The trade-off is that you’ll be sharing space with a lot more people – sometimes thousands more.

I personally tend to prefer smaller ships, even if it means sacrificing those big waterslides and go-kart tracks. But if you want the wow factor, or you just want to have tons of fun things to do at your disposal – a bigger ship might be right for you.

4.) What kind of cabin do I want?

One of the best things about a cruise vacation is that there’s a lot of flexibility in the cost. Prices vary widely even on the same ship based on what kind of stateroom you’d like to book. Interior staterooms – those at center of the ship, without windows or balconies – are the least expensive option and best for people on a budget. For a little more money, you can book a cabin with a window, or upgrade even further to a balcony or suite.

I’ve heard a lot of people say that it’s silly to spend money on a bigger stateroom or balcony cabin because “you’re never in the room anyway!”, but I think that really depends on the person. M and I loved having a balcony on our honeymoon cruise and spent a lot of time reading and relaxing out there. If we had had an interior stateroom, though, I think we absolutely would have been out and about more because the room is smaller and we’d want to be enjoying the scenery and fresh air.

Remember that regardless of where you stay on a ship, you’re all visiting the same destinations! For the most part, you also have access to all the same amenities, though some staterooms come with additional perks like specialty dining or private lounges.

Choosing a stateroom with a balcony when planning a cruise can lead to some gorgeous views like this island view in the Caribbean.

5.) Where on the ship should my stateroom be located?

Now that you’ve decided what kind of stateroom you’d like to book, it’s time to figure out where on the ship you’d like that stateroom to be. As a general rule, I tend to suggest finding a cabin that is:

  • toward the center of the ship, so that you don’t have to walk the length of the ship to reach a particular destination;
  • near, but not right next to the elevators, so that they’re convenient but you’re away from any noise; and
  • below or between other staterooms, rather than on a deck below somewhere like the casino or a bar, again to avoid noise.

Granted, there are plenty of good reasons to book a room that doesn’t meet those criteria. If you have limited mobility, for example, being close to the elevators is a must. Likewise, if you anticipate spending a lot of time in one area of the ship, like the casino or fitness center or a particular pool, then it might make sense to find a stateroom nearby.

6.) How will I get to the ship?

You’re probably already thinking about what flights or other transportation you’ll need to take to get to your departure port, but don’t forget to consider how you’ll get to the ship itself. Most cruise lines offer the option to book transfers that will take you directly from the airport to your ship. Booking those can often save you a lot of time and hassle, especially if the cruise terminal is far from the airport.

If you choose not to book a transfer through the cruise line, make sure you’re prepared to take a cab, ride share (Uber, Lyft, etc.), or public transportation and that you know what to expect. Remember that the ship will not wait for you if you’re late, so plan accordingly!

To that end, I also recommend that you consider arriving in your departure city a day or two before your sailing date to make absolutely certain that you’re not late to the ship. You’ll get the peace of mind that you won’t miss the ship, plus it gives you some extra time to enjoy that port!

7.) Do I need a drinks package?

While most cruises include the majority of your food and entertainment in the cost of your fare, alcohol, soda, and other specialty drinks usually come at an additional cost. When booking a cruise, you can choose to add on a drinks package that will make your trip more all-inclusive, but is it really worth the extra money?

For many people, I say no. Drink packages that include alcohol can average anywhere from $55-$75 per person, per day , or at least $385 for a seven-day cruise. That’s a lot of money – I’ve seen entire weeklong cruises cost less!

To decide if you need a drinks package, I suggest you estimate how many drinks you’re likely to have on any given day. Keep in mind that you’ll likely be spending a good bit of time off the ship when you’re visiting a port. With an average cost of $10 per cocktail or glass of wine (less for beer), enough over the course of your vacation – more than 5-6 drinks per day, every day – to make the price tag worth it? If not, you’re probably better off paying a la carte.

Granted, some people just prefer to pay for the package so they don’t have to worry about costs during the cruise or settling a bill at the end. That’s your choice! Cruise lines also often run deals that include drinks packages or offer them at a significant discount, in which case it can make a lot of sense to add one to your vacation.

M and Gwen toasting

8.) What other extras should I purchase in advance?

Drinks package aside, there are a lot of other “extras” you may be tempted to add to your cruise vacation. Some might even be included in a sale or travel deal at the time of booking, in which case I suggest snapping up all the freebies you can!

For everything else, take a minute to envision the cruise you want. Does it include completely disconnecting from the outside world, or is there a need to have access to WiFi to check in with things back home? (I was always a lock-my-phone-in-the-safe kind of gal, but now that I have kids there’s more of a need to be reachable in case of emergency.) Are you content with the dining options available to you, or are you a foodie who would appreciate access to specialty dining? What can you pay for a la carte that would end up costing you less than bundling into a package, and vice versa?

I do recommend taking care of gratuities in advance, if possible, just so that that cost is behind you and you don’t have to worry about it. But otherwise, it’s all about figuring out what you want your cruise to look like and taking steps to make it happen.

9.) Should I buy cruise insurance?

Prior to the COVID-19 pandemic, I would generally recommend purchasing independent travel insurance rather than doing it through your cruise line, airline, or other travel provider. My reasoning was that if the company through which you booked your vacation goes out of business or suffers some other mishap, the travel insurance you bought will be worthless to help you recover the cost. ( This has actually happened, and it left people stranded around the globe. ) It’s better to have independent insurance that can swoop in and save the day in a crazy scenario like that in addition to covering you in the event of other emergencies.

Many cruise lines do offer a policy that allows you to cancel for any reason, however, and in * these uncertain times* that definitely holds some appeal. Most independent travel insurance doesn’t give you the ability to get reimbursed if you decide not to travel for a non-emergent reason – and especially not for something like the pandemic, which was already in place before you bought your ticket. Thus, buying the insurance through the cruise line makes a little more sense and can give you more peace of mind if you still have concerns about traveling.

That said, I still recommend protecting the investment of your vacation with an independent travel insurance policy.

10.) What kinds of excursions do I want to book?

Now, the fun part: deciding what you’re going to do on your cruise vacation! Cruise lines offer a wide variety of tours and excursions to help you explore and enjoy your ports of call.

Again, think about what you want out of your vacation. Is it peace and relaxation? Maybe book one to two excursions, maximum, and focus on low-stress activities like beach-hopping or sailing. Adventure? Those ATV, snorkeling, and “flightseeing” excursions are calling your name. Culture? Try a city tour or cooking or dance class.

I generally recommend not packing every single day with pre-planned excursions, as some of the best travel experiences come from just seeing where the wind takes you that day. (That’s how we ended up renting motorbikes and exploring St. Kitts! ) Try to find a balance that’s good for you.

cruise vacation questions and answers

Finally, a note about booking. The cruise lines make it easy to schedule excursions and activities through your travel agent or cruise portal, but it’s also possible – and sometimes better – to do it yourself.

Booking through the cruise line is incredibly easy and requires very little time and research effort. It also makes a lot of cruisers feel more confident: they trust the cruise line to have vetted the excursions and tour companies, they know that the tours will get back to the ship in time, and they feel sure that any cancellations will be handled and refunded without a lot of hassle.

That said, I also encourage you to consider booking all or some of your in-port activities directly with the tour operators themselves. In doing so, you ensure that the full cost of your excursion goes directly to that organization instead of paying a commission to the cruise line. After the devastation of the pandemic, this can make a real difference for these small businesses. Researching your own excursions can also reveal some hidden gem activities not available through the cruise line, or different/smaller tour companies that also do a great – or even better! – job.

cruise vacation questions and answers

Cruise-curious? Your cruise questions answered.

A s veterans of more than two dozen cruises, for work and for pleasure, we’ve learned a few things about the art of cruising. We’ve experienced the bad (sailing in circles off the coast of Spain since it was too rough to land in Mallorca) and the good (cruising past sparkling Paris after dark on the Seine). If you’re a never-ever who’s leaning toward the maybe-wannabe camp, or simply cruise-curious, you’ve got questions. We’ve got answers, thanks to Colleen McDaniel, editor in chief of Cruise Critic ( www.cruisecritic.com ), the online cruise reviews website. Here’s what to know before booking a cruise, and things we wish we’d known before we sailed.

Not long ago, a cruise arrived in Boston instead of the Bahamas. Amazingly, some folks were miffed. Does this kind of thing happen often?

While itinerary adjustments do happen, a significantly altered itinerary — like the Bahamas to New England in the winter — is extremely rare. Most times if an itinerary requires an adjustment, due to inclement weather or other instances, it will come in the form of a replaced port or extra sea day.

How far in advance should I book?

If you have specific needs or interests — strict vacation dates, specific cabin categories, or you want a certain ship — book as early as possible. You’ll be more likely to get exactly what you want. If you wait too late, those preferences may no longer be available. That’s particularly true now, as cruising is seeing a huge resurgence. Ships are sailing at — or sometimes above — capacity, and demand is through the roof.

If your plans are fluid, and you’re willing to wait a bit to see if fares fall, booking last-minute may deliver some lower base fares. Some lines will lower their prices when the sail date is three months away or less, to fill any cabins that are still available.

Any other advice for getting the best (cheapest) deal?

The period between when a cruise first goes on sale and about a year out from sailing is considered booking “early.” Fares at that time will generally be enticing, and lines may offer incentives like onboard credit, cabin upgrades, or complimentary beverage packages. Even if the fare isn’t base bottom, those incentives help you save a bundle on the overall cost of your cruise.

Another time to find added incentives are during traditional sale dates like Black Friday and Cyber Monday, plus a period known in the industry as Wave Season, from January through March. Lines offer deals and incentives across the board at this time, so you can shop and compare options all at once.

What about shoulder seasons?

Shoulder-season cruises will absolutely deliver more competitive fares. [For example, when the kids are in school and demand is lower.] But sometimes those lower fares are also due to potentially unfavorable experiences — whether it’s Europe in November [see Mallorca, above], or the Caribbean during hurricane season. Check out our guide, the Best Time to Go on a Cruise , for the best time to visit various cruise destinations across the globe.

Is it worth it to spring for the best cabin one can afford, or go for the cheapest cabin available?

The most expensive and the cheapest cabins book the fastest. There are benefits to both. Oftentimes the higher cabin categories, especially suites, come with benefits like access to special restaurants, exclusive pools, and so on. Having that experience is worth the splurge for some travelers.

If you’re looking for more space, or want a cabin with a window or balcony, keep those factors in mind when selecting a cabin, so you’ll be comfortable onboard.

But some people really don’t care about cabin type. They don’t plan to spend much time in their cabin, or they’d prefer to spend their money elsewhere on their cruise, such as specialty restaurants or shore excursions. If that’s you, booking an inside cabin may be a perfect fit.

Is there an advantage to booking with a cruise specialist?

A cruise vacation has many moving parts. It can be a complicated purchase for casual cruisers. Booking with a verified cruise specialist will help navigate that. They can also identify special savings and cost-savings measures. Working with these specialists is generally free-of-charge for travelers — the cruise lines cover the cost of commission.

Also, they provide a trusted pair of hands on the ground. Many times, it’s not just the cruise you’re booking, but also airfare and hotel reservations. Cruise specialists can assist with those bookings, and also assist with delayed or canceled flights and the trickle-down effect of those travel disruptions.

If you tend to get seasick, is an ocean cruise a bad idea?

Most large, ocean-going ships have stabilizers that help to provide the smoothest cruise possible. So, seasickness likely won’t be an issue on a large ship. Cabins located in the middle of the ship tend to be best for the seasick-prone, and outside or balcony cabins offer a way to steady yourself with the horizon or fresh air. Beyond that, look for itineraries with a limited number of sea days. This will mean more time in port, where you’re able to ground yourself.

Should one sign up for shore excursions offered by the cruise line, or DIY?

There are advantages to both. Cruisers often share that shore excursions offered by the cruise line are more expensive, but these [tour operators] are fully vetted by the cruise line. They are trusted entities. And if your ship-sponsored excursion runs late, the cruise line will wait for you to return to the ship. If you book an independent excursion that misses the boarding cutoff, the ship will leave without you.

Conversely, independently-booked excursions can be less costly, and offer a wider array of options. Sometimes they offer a more local touch, too. Many cruisers use our Cruise Critic Roll Calls to book independent excursions with fellow travelers who will be on their cruise, to share the cost. Independent excursions also might mean fewer people participating. Sometimes, ship-offered excursions mean big groups of people, which can be frustrating to some.

Asking for those who aren’t into wearing gowns and tuxedos — are formal nights still a part of the cruise experience?

Good news: The modern cruise experience reflects the interests of today’s traveler. That means many of those more “traditional” cruise elements are gone, or are no longer mandatory. We’re seeing lines become more relaxed about formal nights, either making them voluntary or removing them entirely. And many lines now offer flexible dining, a concept first introduced by Norwegian. You are no longer required to sit with strangers, you can choose where and when you dine.

There are also many more specialty restaurants outside of the main dining room, so dining options are far more varied than on yesteryear’s cruise ships. Hate lines? Look for smaller cruise ships. Want to sail without kids? Consider a line like Viking or Virgin, both of which are expressly for 18-year-olds and above.

Want to get a good deal on a cruise? Colleen McDaniel, editor in chief of Cruise Critic, recommends Wave Season, from January through March, as a good time to book. Cruise lines offer deals and incentives during this period.

Cruise Ship Illness Frequently Asked Questions

  • Find answers to common questions about gastrointestinal illness outbreaks, our inspections, and more.
  • Note that ships under our jurisdiction are those that have a foreign itinerary, a U.S. port, and more than 13 passengers. Other organizations handle cruise ships outside our jurisdiction.

Three stacked wooden blocks with question marks.

Norovirus and acute gastroenteritis (AGE)

Why do people associate age (including norovirus) with cruise ships.

Norovirus is a very contagious virus. Close living quarters may increase the amount of group contact. People joining the ship may bring the virus to other passengers and crew. Additionally, health officials track illness on cruise ships. So outbreaks are found and reported more quickly on a cruise ship than on land.

Does CDC address other illnesses on cruise ships?

Yes. Learn more about other common health concerns during cruise travel and what you can do to prevent illness.

The ship I sailed on had a lot of sick passengers or crew. Where can I find more information?

We consider it an outbreak when 3% or more of a ship's passengers or crew report being sick with AGE symptoms. We investigate outbreaks on ships within our jurisdiction. Explore our outbreak information on specific ships .

I think the ship I was on had an outbreak, but I don't see an outbreak posting. Why not?

There could be several reasons why an outbreak isn't posted on our site:

  • The number of cases might not have met our threshold for what we can consider an outbreak (3% or more of a ship's passengers or crew report being sick with AGE symptoms).
  • The ship might be outside our jurisdiction. Other organizations handle outbreaks outside our jurisdiction.
  • People who were sick might not have reported it, so an outbreak could have gone undetected. This is why reporting illness is important.

Public health inspections

How often are ships inspected.

Cruise ships under our jurisdiction are subject to two unannounced inspections each year. We inspect cruise ships to determine how well they are operating and maintaining public health standards (learn more about the eight areas we inspect ). If a ship sails outside of the United States for an extended period, it may not be inspected twice a year, but it will be inspected again when it returns to the United States.

Why isn't the ship I'm looking for in the inspection database?

The ship might not be in the inspection database because it does not meet our criteria for inspection.

The ship could be sailing outside the United States for an extended period (in which case it will be inspected and added in the database when it returns).

How are cruise ships inspections scored?

Cruise ships are scored on a 100-point scale as outlined in our current Vessel Sanitation Program (VSP) Operations Manual .

  • Points are deducted when there is a pattern of similar violations or when there is a single, significant violation.
  • An 85 or below is a failing score.

We post all inspection scores .

Are ships required to correct violations found during inspections?

Yes. Ships are responsible for correcting all violations. They must correct certain critical violations immediately.

In addition, some violations can be corrected during the inspection, while others may take longer to correct. Each ship submits a corrective action statement describing how violations were corrected.

What happens if a ship fails an inspection?

A failing score indicates violations that the ship is responsible for correcting. Ships that fail inspections are reinspected within a reasonable period.

No-sail recommendation

When would vsp recommend a ship not sail.

People sometimes assume that we will recommend a ship not sail if it fails an inspection. However, we have rarely issued such recommendations.

We may recommend a ship not sail if there are imminent public health risks . Examples of such risks are

  • Inability to properly chlorinate potable (drinking) water.
  • Inability to keep food within safe temperatures.
  • Inadequate facilities for cleaning and sanitizing food equipment.
  • Inability to properly dispose of solid or liquid waste.

We may also recommend a ship not sail during an infectious disease outbreak where continuing normal operations could subject newly arriving passengers to disease.

If a cruise line refuses to follow a VSP no-sail recommendation, it can become a no-sail order.

Children and pools

Why can't children who are not toilet trained use pools on cruise ships.

Children who wear any type of diaper, including swim diapers, are not allowed in pools. Swim diapers and swim pants might hold in some solid feces, but they are not leak proof.

The Vessel Sanitation Program helps the cruise ship industry prevent and control the introduction and spread of gastrointestinal illnesses on cruise ships.

Hi all! I would greatly appreciate any advice or suggestions you might have for a trip we are planning for 2025.

We were able to see quite a few whales in Juneau when we did a boat tour, however, we didn't see any orcas. Some crew on the ship said we missed them by a week - that there had been a good amount heading South the week before. We would love to show my FIL the whales, period, but orcas would be a definite plus.

I know there are no definite answers when it comes to wildlife, however, would late May be better or worse than late June if we visited Juneau, in particular?

A different option - there are one way cruises that end or begin in Seward - would we be better off doing a cruise that would include Seward?

Thank you so much for any suggestions you can offer as we try to make a trip of a lifetime happen for my FIL!

5 replies to this topic

The best place to whale watch for orcas is the San Juan Islands near Seattle/Vancouver, so maybe consider including that either going to/from your cruise . Ask over on the Seattle or Vancouver forums which would be the best company to use. I know the chances of seeing *some* species of whale runs about 90%, but I don't know the breakdown of species. Except I did find this company which claims a 98% chance of finding orcas: https://www.outerislandx.com/ from Memorial Day thru Labor Day. They guarantee orcas or you can take a second, free tour...which might not be so helpful when you're on the opposite side of the continent. But at least the offer is made, and IMO that counts for something..... Anyway, May through June for orcas: https://majormarine.com/whale-watching/ , and have an Orca Quest from mid-May to mid-June that has a 70% chance of success...but...it's unclear if that is just for orcas...likely it includes sightings of any species. Anyway, post over on the other forums where I'm sure the good people there will give you helpful advice.

That said, no guarantee you'll see any orcas even if you do whale-watches in all 3 areas. I would suggest Seattle and Seward if you want to include only 2 tours. Seward is your best chance to see a variety of marine wildlife.

cruise vacation questions and answers

Is a land-based adventure not a possibility? One does not have to be able to hike mile after mile to have a spectacular land vacation up here.

' class=

Scott - Land-based is not probably the best option for this particular trip. We definitely want to do a land adventure, but the movement from place to place is harder with my FIL.

mjyocum - Thank you so much for the response. I have not been to Vancouver, and it's one that I really want to visit, so this may be the way to go.

And just an idea to follow up on what Scott suggested: if your main goal is not to keep switching lodging, have you considered renting an RV? Then you can take your lodging with you, plus have a bathroom available all the time. Plus you'd have food available whenever you want it--you don't have to cook meals if you prefer not to, but even having snacks and cold drinks when you want them is nice. That would also solve the problem of long walks down corridors--you can drop FIL off at the door of any excursion/restaurant, then one of you stays with him while the other parks the RV.

Many folks have their first RV experience in Alaska and the vast majority do really well. You could fly direct to Seattle (a 5 hr. flight ), overnight. Day 2 would be an orca tour and maybe one or two other things that are of interest there. Day 3 take a morning flight to ANC (3.5 hr. direct flight ), pick up the RV in the early afternoon (Great Alaskan Holidays or ABC). Figure out what you'd all like to see and do for 5 to 7 days or so, and of course include heading down to Seward for the Orca and/or Kenai Fjords cruise . The drive to Seward is incredibly scenic, from ANC it takes 2.5 to 3 hrs without stops. With stops, it can take all day if you want it to, lol.

Anyway just something to consider while you're still making plans.
