Experiences in Amsterdam

Amsterdam is a city you can visit time and again and always find something new and interesting to explore. The world class art, beautiful canals, markets, cafes, unique architecture, lovely parks make for a very diverse and cosmopolitan environment.

Amsterdam has approximately 7,500 listed historic buildings, museums such as the Rijksmuseum, Van Gogh Museum or Rembrandt House Museum are musts for art lovers.

There is also a superb science museum and of course the famous Anne Franks House. History is from every corner you explore, from gable stones (carved and colourfully painted stone tablets) to old shipyards and a secret church in the attic of a canal house.

Top 5 Amsterdam Canals

In Dutch a canal is a “gracht” and canals are “grachten”. There are a couple of canals in Amsterdam that form the central canal right, also known as “grachtengordel” in Dutch.

QUICK JUMP TO:

The beauties came to life during the beginning of the 17th-century, after the population in Amsterdam grew beyond its medieval walls and city planners put together an ambitious idea for expansion. Far from being picturesque or decorative, the canals in Amsterdam were necessary to drain & reclaim the wet land.

In 2010, Unesco listed the canals in Amsterdam (or waterways) as a World Heritage site. The canals in Amsterdam outnumber those in Venice.

Number Of Canals in Amsterdam

There are currently 165 canals in Holland’s capital. Amsterdam also has 3 times as many bridges – more than any other place in the world.

This Dutch city has more bicycles than the 863.200 inhabitants and every year 12.000 bicycles are pulled out of the canals in Amsterdam.

What Canals Are There?

The core canals in Amsterdam are semicircular Singel, Herengracht, Keizersgracht and Prinsengracht . A simple way to remember the names of these canals is that, aside from the Singel canal, all others are in alphabetical order as you move outward.

5 Best Canals in Amsterdam

The Singel is a canal in Amsterdam that starts from the IJ-river and ends at Munt Square or Muntplein in Dutch, where it flows into the Binnen Amstel. The Singel was dug in 1428 and extended in 1450. It was initially a moat that defended the western limits of Amsterdam. Amazing, historical buildings are located on this canal – there’s even one that dates back to the year 1600: The House “De Dolphijn”. This used to be the house of Frans Banninck Cocq – who Rembrandt painted in his Night Watch.

Since 1968, the Singel canal also has an official Cat boat – a houseboat containing dozens of cats. The Catboat is the only floating animal sanctuary in the world. A refuge for stray and abandoned cats which, thanks to its special location on a houseboat in Amsterdam’s charming canal belt, has also become a world-famous attraction.

2 | Herengracht

This was where the richest residents of the city moved once the canals in Amsterdam were completed. Before that, they lived on the Oudezijds Voorburgwal – in “ De Wallen “, beter known as the Red Light District. They named the waterway after the Heeren XVII (17 Gentlemen) of the Dutch East India Company and built their beautiful mansions alongside it.

3 | Keizersgracht

The Keizersgracht , the second of the three main canals in Amsterdam that together form the canals, is located between the Herengracht and the Prinsengracht.

Almost as stylish, the Keizersgracht was a bow to Holy Roman Emperor Maximilian I and with 28 meters in width the Keizersgracht is the widest canal in town. A special detail is that the Keizersgracht was dug one year later than the Prinsengracht (which was dug in 1614), while Keizersgracht is the second canal of the three main canals.

Also this canal is surround by beautiful, old buildings from the 19th, 18th and even the 17th-century. The oldest building on the Keizersgracht is the House with the Heads , which was built in 1622 and named after the 6 ornaments shaped as heads, which can all be found on the facade.

4 | Prinsengracht

This canal in Amsterdam was named after Willem the Silent, Prince of Orange and the 1st Dutch royal. The Prinsengracht (or Princes canal in English) was created as a somewhat cheaper canal with smaller residences and warehouses. It was one of the canals in Amsterdam that acted as a barrier against the crusty working-class quarter beyond it, also known as the Jordaan.

Nowadays, the Prinsengracht is the liveliest of the canals in Amsterdam, with cafes, shops and many houseboats. Yearly, during the first weekend of August one of Amsterdam’s biggest events takes place on this canal: The Amsterdam Pride (formally known as the Gay Pride).

5 | Brouwersgracht

The Brouwersgracht is a radial canal in Amsterdam which cuts across the others. This canal takes its name from the many breweries that used to produce along the bounding waters. People often find the Brouwersgracht one of the most beautiful canals in Amsterdam.

How Many Canals Does Amsterdam Have?

165 canals. That’s how many Amsterdam has. And that number doesn’t even include all the waterways in the city, just the canals. The 165 canals were built in the 17th century during the Dutch Golden Age to transport goods and people around the city. Today, they’re used for recreation and tourism. Many people enjoy taking a canal cruise or renting a boat to explore the city from the water. The canals also serve as a major transportation artery for locals getting around town. With so many canals, it’s no wonder Amsterdam is often called the Venice of the North.

Amsterdam Canal Tour

Exploring Holland’s capital by boat is one of the best things you could do while being in the wonderful city. There are many canal companies in town, but we know which one to take.

an open boat cruising across a bridge over an amsterdam canal

a group of ladies on a small boat in amsterdam celebrating gender reveal party

Discover amsterdam's famous waterways in style.

Amsterdam’s canal-filled historic centre became what it is today through centuries of cultural change and events which have changed the path of European and world history. From the city’s humble beginnings as an area of reclaimed land in the middle ages to one of Europe’s most incredible capital cities can be felt as you sail along the city’s waterways.

These canals have been the lifeblood of the Dutch capital for around 400 years, connecting it to the world for trade and conquest, colonisation and commerce.

These days, Amsterdam is a vibrant, dynamic city and, although it still remains a hub of trade, the canals are more associated with leisure and fun than trading spices from faraway lands. As you weave your way through these incredible waterways on a Private Boat Tour, Amsterdam’s best professional hosts and guides will be able to answer any questions that you might have and go the extra mile to ensure that your time is spent well in this paradise on earth!

In 2015 we pulled two former migrant boats from the Mediterranean to Amsterdam. To start the most inclusive, the most colourful and probably the most sympathetic canal cruise company of the city. You may decide whether we have succeeded in this. We – a crew with roots in Syria, Somalia, Eritrea, Egypt and the Netherlands – would love to sail and guide you through our beautiful Amsterdam.

Like to discover Amsterdam together?

tours tours

You sail on our boat ‘Hedir’ through the canals of Amsterdam. A captain and a guide will accompany you on this tour. Both have landed in Amsterdam as refugees themselves. They will tell you about the city, but then a slightly different story. They will tell you how a fishing boat from Egypt came to be used by people smugglers to transport dozens of people across the Mediterranean, and how these original refugee boats ended up in the canals of Amsterdam in 2015. And they tell you how they themselves became part of this refugee story.

Do you want to be on one of these boats!

Alhadj Djumaa

The official name of this Egyptian vessel is ‘Alhadj Djumaa’ (which translated means ‘Mister Friday’ in Arabic). Alhadj means a wise old man who has been on pilgrimage, and Djumaa means Friday. It departed Egypt on the 25th of July 2013, headed for Lampedusa. It’s only 12m by 4m, but it carried a staggering 282 passengers – 217 Eritreans and 65 Ethiopians. As far as we know, they all made it safely across the ocean.

The boat was seized the day after departure by the Italian authorities, who later gave it to us.

In between the oil barrels, life jackets and clothes left behind on board, we found a book of sheet music for guitar. One other line of text is written on the back of the vessel: road to freedom, way of peace.

grachten boat tour

We don’t know much about the history of our smaller boat, except that it was picked up by the Italian coast guard on August 29, 2014, about 18 miles southwest of the Sicilian town of Portopalo. We call it “Hedir”, the word that is written on the side, which means ‘thunder’ or ‘roar’ or ‘powerful woman’ in Arabic. Our only other clue to its history was a pair of diving goggles which were left on board.

At just 6m long, it’s well suited for slipping through the canals and under bridges. Since all new vessels in Amsterdam have to be electric, we refitted this former refugee boat, so now it moves along silently.

Tom cruise shows off ripped bod on spanish beach amid new film talks, tom cruise hits beach in spain ripped bod steals show.

Tom Cruise is looking damn good at 61 ... showing off his buff bod on a beach during a break from his hectic filming schedule, and possibly discussing even more flicks while there.

The movie star -- sporting navy swim shorts -- was radiating while living it up at Majorca's Formentor beach in Spain over the weekend ... showing off his chiseled physique as he got in the water and enjoyed a little R&R amid his very busy life.

Earlier that same day ... Tom was seen fully clothed ... sporting a grey top, shorts, and fedora as he hopped onboard a sailboat with filmmaker Alejandro Gonzalez Iñarritu -- likely chatting about his role in AGI's upcoming film, for which they're teaming up.

No ifs, ands, or buts about it from the looks of these pics -- the man's in great shape, just like back in his early movie star days, when his toned physique was frequently on display, like in 1986's "Top Gun." Frankly, we doubt if he's ever NOT been totally shredded.

Back in the day, his youth might have explained his tip-top shape -- but nowadays ... you could argue Tom's love for shooting his own action-packed stunts are keeping him toned and fit. We're sure he's hitting the gym too ... 'cause yeah, the homeboy is straight-up yoked.

Like we said ... Tom's on a bit of a break right now -- in recent weeks, Tom's been filming adrenaline-pumping scenes for the 8th 'Mission Impossible' movie, so he's enjoying some much-deserved time off.

Feast your eyes, people ... Tom's still got it.

44-Foot Whale Found Dead on Bow of Cruise Ship Coming Into New York

The endangered sei whale, usually found in deep waters, was discovered on the bow of a cruise ship as it arrived at the Brooklyn Cruise Terminal, marine authorities said.

The Statue of Liberty is seen in the background behind a sign for the Brooklyn Cruise Terminal.

By Livia Albeck-Ripka

As the cruise ship approached New York on Saturday, it was found to be carrying a grim, and unexpected, catch: The carcass of a 44-foot-long endangered whale, draped across its bow.

The whale, which marine authorities described as a sei whale, is known for its rapid swimming and preference for deep waters, far from the coast. Its body was discovered as the ship neared the Brooklyn Cruise Terminal, and the authorities were “immediately notified,” said MSC Cruises, which owns the ship.

A spokeswoman for the company said in an email that it had “comprehensive measures” in place to avoid such collisions, including training deck officers and altering itineraries in certain areas to avoid them. “We will continue to evaluate and update our procedures with our partners and the authorities,” she said.

Marine authorities said that they had towed the animal, estimated to weigh some 50,000 pounds, from the bow, and transferred it by boat to a beach in Sandy Hook, N.J., where they conducted a necropsy on Tuesday.

The investigation is continuing, but preliminary results — broken bones in the whale’s right flipper; tissue trauma along its right shoulder blade; a full stomach and decent layer of blubber — all pointed toward the animal having been in otherwise good health when it was likely struck and killed by the ship, said Robert A. DiGiovanni, the chief scientist of the Atlantic Marine Conservation Society, which is leading the investigation .

The whale was already “pretty decomposed” by the time scientists began the necropsy, he added, so they worked quickly to collect samples that could be tested for contaminants and other biotoxins that would indicate any other relevant health issues. “It looks like the animal was alive and it was hit by a vessel,” he said, noting that investigators had not ruled out other factors.

Mr. DiGiovanni said that his conservation group, which is federally authorized to respond to marine mammal strandings in New York, had dealt with more than 100 whales over the past several years, many of which had been entangled in nets or struck by vessels. Most of those whales were humpback and North Atlantic right whales, he added, noting that it was more uncommon to come across a sei whale.

Sei whales usually live in subtropical, temperate and subpolar waters and are named after the Norwegian word for pollock, “seje,” because the mammals are often found together with the fish. Their long, sleek bodies are usually dark blue or black with a cream-colored underside, and are often scarred by shark and lamprey bites.

In the 19th and 20th centuries, the whales were commercially hunted for their meat and oil, decimating their population, which is now designated as depleted under the Marine Mammal Protection Act .

Mr. DiGiovanni said that the death was a reminder that humans shared the open water with many other mammals. “When you’re out there, these animals might be there,” he said. “We need to make people more aware about how to operate around these animals.”

A spokeswoman for the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration said by email that mariners along the East Coast were encouraged to slow down their vessels, stay alert, and report any sightings of dead, injured or entangled whales to the authorities.

Cruise ship arrives at New York City harbor with dead whale caught on bow

The 44ft-long whale corpse was an endangered sei whale, which will now be examined to determine how it died

A cruise ship has journeyed into New York City’s harbor bearing a gruesome cargo in the form of a huge, dead whale sprawled across its bow.

The incident happened on Saturday, according to local US media reports , and the event is being held by some as further evidence of the unfortunate impact on sea life that large vessels can have.

The 44ft-long whale corpse was an endangered sei whale and was caught on the ship’s bow when it arrived at the Port of Brooklyn, according to a National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration fisheries spokesperson, Andrea Gomez.

The boat involved was the Meraviglia, which docked in New York before sailing on a journey to ports in New England and Canada. It is owned by Geneva-based MSC Cruises .

“We immediately notified the relevant authorities, who are now conducting an examination of the whale,” officials with the cruise line said in a statement, who added that the company had regulations in place to avoid collisions with whales and other animals at sea.

“We are deeply saddened by the loss of any marine life,” the statement said.

The whale is now the subject of a necropsy to try and determine how it died, notably if it was already dead when hit by the cruise ship. Sei whales are one of the largest whales and are a protected species.

Coast Guard rescues 4 people from their overturned boat near Freeport, officials say

KTRK logo

FREEPORT, Texas (KTRK) -- Coast Guard crews rescued four people from their overturned boat earlier this week in Freeport.

According to Coast Guard Sector Houston-Galveston, watchstanders received a mayday call at about 4:47 p.m. on Monday from a crew member who said their tug and barge were rolling over on their side with four people aboard.

Officials said the boat crew pulled three people on board from a life raft and taken to Station Freeport.

The fourth person, who reportedly suffered a back injury, was hoisted into a helicopter and flown to the University of Texas Medical Branch Galveston.

Their conditions are unknown.
