Thinking of trying your luck with a lightweight BJJ Gi?

Luckily, there are Gis designed for that purpose (and more) and we have the ultimate guide to picking the best lightweight BJJ Gi for you right here!

Our Top Picks at a Glance

  • Best Overall – Hayabusa Ultra Lightweight BJJ Gi
  • Best for Competition – Sanabul Core Competition
  • Best Design – Shogun
  • Lightest – Gold BJJ

What is a Lightweight BJJ Gi?

Brazilian Jiu-Jtsu requires a lot of pulling, tugging, grasping, and all other sorts of manipulating of the training gear (Gis). This means that not just any garment is going to last long in regular BJJ training.

Jiu-Jitsu Gis tend to be sturdy and stiff, usually weighing somewhere around the 4-5 lbs mark (~2kg). This makes them heavy, uncomfortable after sweating in them for a while, and also a nuisance to wash on a regular basis. Not to mention the extra weight when you travel.

Lightweight BJJ Gis remedy all this. They are way more comfortable, easy to pack and take care of, and allow for a much bigger range of motion during training.

The latest models also provide durability and resilience, qualities that were missing from the first versions of lightweight BJJ gis about a decade ago.

Hayabusa Ultra Lightweight BJJ GI

Hayabusa is a brand synonym with BJJ Gis since Jiu-Jitsu went global. Interestingly, my first encounter with this brand was through a highly uncomfortable heavyweight GI, but that does not mean they don’t offer some of the best lightweight BJJ Gis available. .

Hayabusa’s ultra-lightweight Gi is made from comfortable pearl weave material, offering a sensation of free, unrestricted motion during training It is also highly durable with dedicated stitching reinforcing key stress areas (lapels, knees, crotch, armpits, shoulders)

This Gi is pre-treated for fading, so the color of the Gi and accompanying embroidery is not going to fade, even after repeated washing.

7 different sizes are available, as well as 4 different colors. The material is 100% cotton, IBJJF-approved for competition . The pants feature a bungee cord drawstring closure.

  • Legal for both training and competition (except the grey)
  • Colors will not fade
  • Elastic drawstring
  • The model has longer sleeves and pants than usual

There is an ultra-light sensation to wearing this Gi, it kind of feels like you only have a rashguard on. It does not retain sweat, eliminating that drenched feeling.

How to Choose a Lightweight BJJ Gi

Picking a Gi tends to be a pretty demanding task, even for experienced BJJ practitioners. There are known factors to consider like weave, size, color, brand, and price.

Then, there is the attention-consuming question of figuring out seize charts, before adding in personal preferences. And just when you think you’re done, price becomes a factor.

We’ve eased all of these Gi selection headaches by doing most of the hard stuff for you. All that’s left for you is to follow our guide and double-check sizes before you order your lightweight BJJ Gi.

In case you’re curious how we picked the above to be the best lightweight BJJ Gis, here are the criteria we applied to each and every product:

Weave refers to the way the Gi fabric is brought together to form the Gi. The weave affects the weight, stiffness, and comfort of the Gi, and affects possible shrinkage rates.

For lightweight Gis, the pearl weave is the most common option. It is a proven way to craft lightweight, yet resilient Gis that can withstand all the tugging that goes on during BJJ training or competitions.

The single weave is the original lightweight Gi weave, but it does not offer the same strength as the pearl weave does.

Hybrid weaves like the gold weave, honeycomb weave, and iceweave are also great for lightweight Gis, but tend to be more expensive.

GSM refers to Grams per Square Meter and is a measurement for the density of the fabric in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Gis. GSM determines the weight of the Gi – the lower the GSM number is, the more lightweight a Gi is going to be.

Gi colores tend to vary a lot, and this is one aspect of picking out a Gi that is almost entirely down to personal preferences. I say “almost” because the IBJJF (and other similar organizations like the UAEJJF) only allow three colors in tournaments: blue, black, and white.

In training, you are free to use any type of Gi color, or combination of colors, as long as the academy allows it. Some BJJ academies, like Gracie Barra, for example, have uniform standards in place, but most schools don’t bother with such details.

What this means is that if you like colorful Gis, but also like to compete, you’ll need to pick the best lightweight BJJ Gi for both occasions.

This completely comes down to personal preference, usually defined by a brand’s original attributes.

With lightweight BJJ Gis, there is not as much choice as with regular Gis, meaning the best bet is sticking to brands that have proven products in that department, like the options we provided for you above.

Size is where things get sticky. The rule of thumb to remember is that every brand has its own specific size chart. You need to take a careful look at the size charts provided by brands and measure yourself according to their directions in order to be able to pick out the right size for you.

All bands use standardized sizes, depicted by the letter A and a number, usually between the values of 0 and 6. However, what is A1 in one brand, is not the same as another, despite being close.

There is also the question of shrinkage, which has to do with the type of weave and is another thing brands precisely outline.

Almost all Gis have a shrinkage rate, including lightweight Gis, but with pre-shrunk options, it is not as noticeable.

The final, and most defining factor of picking out a Gi. With BJJ Gis, the same things hold true price-wise as with everything else – the more expensive is usually the better.

That said, there are some high-quality budget options available, like Sanabul’s Gis.

A simple guide is to select a lower-priced Gi if you are buying a lightweight Gi, (or any Gi ) for the first time so that you figure out if it works for you.

When you know what you’re looking for, in terms of all the criteria described above, you can opt for more expensive versions, which will definitely last longer.

Why Use a Lightweight Gi?

Simple. They’re more comfortable. They allow for a better range of motion. It is easier to travel with them. They do not soak up bad smells as much. You don’t have to weight cut as much when you compete with a lightweight BJJ Gi.

I personally like them because I prefer No-Gi more to Gi, but train in both. I like the feeling of wearing something similar to a rashguard while training/competing in the Gi.

Lightweight Gis are also great for travel since they don’t take up a lot of space, and they weigh significantly less than standard BJJ Gis.

Also, if you’re training in warm weather, even if it is for a portion of the year, invest in a lightweight BJJ Gi. You can thank me later.

Popular BJJ Gi Brands

Hayabusa is one of the most trusted BJJ Gi brands. They offer all types of martial arts gear, for BJJ, Judo, MMA, grappling, Muay Thai, etc.

Established way back in 2006, Hayabusa has been on the cutting edge of combat sports apparel ever since. Their offer includes some of the best-looking and performing BJJ Gis on the market, with an emphasis on their lightweight Gi options.

Sanabul logo

lightweight travel gi

One of the oldest brands specializing in the production of Gis for both Judo and Jiu-Jitsu. Active since 1969 they know more about Gis than anyone else, something that is reflected in their product line.

This pioneering role in the field means that Fuji’s prices are not cheap, but any Gi you do get from them, lightweight or not, is going to last you as long as you train and compete.

Fuji also supports the community by sponsoring professional grappling athletes in BJJ and Judo.

Final Thoughts

If you’re not sure what to get in terms of a BJJ Gi, go for a lightweight Gi. Particularly if you are a beginner . Lightweight Gis allow you more range of motion, feel more comfortable, and do not get in the way as much as standard Gis.

If you’re wondering which is the best lightweight BJJ Gi for you, we’ve already covered everything on the subject above, so now all that’s left is to get one, slap, bump, and roll!

Best Lightweight BJJ GI Guide 2019

Training BJJ in the Gi is a truly unique experience. It is not that much the fact that you’re wearing the Gi, but the feel of the material and how it is used. In terms of feel, the first time you wear a BJJ Gi is not something most people associate with comfort. A Jiu-Jitsu Gi consists of an extremely sturdy and hard jacket, and thick, multilayered pants. The way Gi’s are woven is also highly specific. This is all very understandable, given the amount of “abuse” a Gi needs to be able to take. However, it doesn’t change the fact that training in a durable Gi is like trying to roll with a heavy blanket on. There is, however a hack – lightweight Gis. Today, we’ll take a look at the best Lightweight BJJ Gi options that can replace all your other kimonos.

Thinking a lightweight BJJ Gi is not going to be able to withstand the demands of training? think again. When we’re talking about a lightweight Gi, we mean a modern design, state-of-the-art one, not an Aikido Gi. More on that later. For now, it is enough to understand that you can both feel light and comfortable and train BJJ with a Gi that’ll last. yeah, I didn’t believe it either until a short while ago. Completely by chance, I acquired an ultralightweight Gi (featured later in our best lightweight BJJ Gi guide) and it changed my grappling life. Suddenly, I could train and roll wearing something that resembles a rashguard more than it does a kimono. And yet, it is proving to be just as tough and durable as the stiff and uncomfortable ones.

The Lightweight BJJ Gi

When it comes to the best lightweight BJJ Gi, the list is not as short as you might think. Basically, every larger BJJ Gi manufacturer out there has at least one lightweight series available. Completely understandable too, given how different training in one is.

Lightweight GIs are the latest product of an ever-growing industry. The real challenge with a BJJ gi is durability. Given the price of kimonos, it’s understandable that people like to buy stuff that lasts, preferably for years to come. On that note, the logical thing is to go for the tough, sturdy, Gi that weighs a ton and is hard to move in. Plus, you need to factor it in whenever you weigh in for the competition. If you cut weight to grapple, then you know how much of a hassle that is. And this is all before we talk about training in hot weather. The need for a lightweight Gi that has all the same properties of a heavy-duty one, but none of the drawbacks was just a question of time. Luckily, manufacturers responded to the need for such a kimono.

The weave used in a lightweight Gi is usually a pearl one. It is the lightest Gi weave that’s allowed for use in IBJJF tournaments. To be fair, there are also single-weave ultra-light GIs, but they do not last nearly as much as others. The pearl weave allows air to pass through and does not impede the range of motion while offering amazing tensile strength. Finally, there is the Hybrid weave Gis, meaning combinations of weaves that deliver the best possible Gi both in terms of performance and weight.

Best Lightweight BJJ Gi

In reality, everyone needs at least one lightweight Gi. Even if it’s just for competition, it is going to change the way you approach Jiu-Jitsu. Plus, the price of lightweight GIs is far more affordable than that of double-weave heavy-duty ones. In order to facilitate the next Gi shopping spree, we compiled a list of the best lightweight BJJ Gi options that are readily available in 2024. They’re becoming increasingly more popular though, so you’ll need to get a move on if you’re going to get yours.

Fuji Summerweight BJJ Kimono

Best Lightweight BJJ GI 2019

This Gi is, first and foremost, completely IBJJF legal. It is available in three basic colors: black, blue, and white. it also comes in all the usual adult sizes, ranging from A1 to A6. It is the perfect fit for both male and female grapplers. The weave is a pearl and the material is 100% cotton. The collar contains a lightweight rubber that helps keep the lapels dry. The Fuji Summerweight is one of the lightest Gis ever produced. It comes pre-shrunk and in the standard Fuji-specific cut. It is highly durable, extremely comfortable, and unbelievably well-priced. Comes with two free Fuji patches.

Hayabusa Pearl Weave Light Jiu-Jitsu Gi

Best Lightweight BJJ GI 2019

The one thing that sets the Hayabusa Pearl Weave Light Gi aside from others is its versatility in terms of color. While the basic blue, white, and black colors are IBJJF legal, all the other options, like maroon, grey, and stone white are not. That doesn’t mean that you can’t train in any of them, though. Sizes include all options between A0 and A5. As the name suggests, it is a pearl weave Gi, constructed from 420 gsm PEARL weave cotton. it features reinforcements in key stress areas like lapels while staying ultralight. The pants are also very lightweight, weighing in at only 8 oz and featuring ripstop cotton. Made for optimal performance.

Sanabul Essentials V.2 Ultra Light Preshrunk Jiu Jitsu Gi

Best Lightweight BJJ GI Guide 2019

In terms of color, “illegal” grey leads the way, with the regular legal colors following suit. Actually, there are two versions of the blue Gi, one standard and one navy, both of which are IBJJF legal. Sizes include A0 to A4 but are unique to the Sanabul athletic cut. Make sure you look at the size chart before choosing the one for you! The Essentials V2 Lightweight Gi comes completely pre-shrunk, This Gi is a single weave, meaning it is as light as a BJJ gi can be. Despite this, this Gi has proven to be surprisingly durable. It also has special features like stiffer rubberized collars and dens-knit embroidery. Comes with a free belt.

Flow Kimonos Air BJJ

Best Lightweight BJJ GI 2019

The Air BJJ Flow Gi is an ultra-lightweight Gi that comes in a 100 % pre-shrunk version. The guarantee is that it won’t shrink more than 1 % no matter what you do to it. An innovative high-density foam drawstring ensures that you won’t have to fiddle with it constantly.

Elite Sports IBJJF Ultra Light Preshrunk Gi

Best Lightweight BJJ GI 2019

As versatile as Gis can get, none offer as much as the Elite Ultra Light. While it is IBJJF legal, as its name suggests, it does come in versions that are not allowed at tournaments. The colors on offer, despite the regular three, are grey, navy, and pink. A1 to A5 sizes are available for each color variant. Extremely cool design and a great fit for both male and female grapplers. This Gi feels as light as a rashguard when you’re wearing it. It features anti-odor and antimicrobial properties and doesn’t allow a buildup of sweat. Virtually indestructible and 100% pre-shrunk. Comes with a free BJJ belt.

Gameness Air Lightweight Gi

Best Lightweight BJJ GI 2019

Color options are limited to the three IBJJF legal colors of white, black, and blue. On the other hand, sizes are more versatile, ranging from A0 to A6. This Gi is the perfect fit for any occasion, whether you want to compete or just train in it. Gameness is well known for high-quality pearl weaves, so it is no wonder that this one has the same 350-gram pattern. Pants weigh in at only 8 oz while featuring full ripstop properties. Tatami Zero G V4 Brazilian Jiu Jitsu Gi

Best Lightweight BJJ GI 2019

The material is reinforced pearl weave, offering both durability and extreme comfort. There’s absolutely no restriction to movement, and the Gi is perfect to train in even when extremely hot. There’s unique contrast stitching that gives this awesome Gi even more style and flair. The complete Gi, pants, and jacket included, weighs in at barely 1.5 kg, (3.3 lbs) which is pretty much the lightest a solid Gi can get. The collar area is rubberized to prevent the absorption of moisture. The jacket is made from a single piece of material, making it notoriously hard to tear. Pants feature panels with diagonal stitching. Comes in black and white, and in all usual sizes (A0-A5).

Hypnotik Interstellar BJJ Gi

Best Lightweight BJJ GI 2019

This Gi comes in white color and is a limited edition GI. Despite being white, this Gi is not legal under IBJJF/UAEJJF rules. The reason for this is that both collars have a different color than the rest of the jacket, which is illegal under certain rulesets. In fact, the collar features a multicolored design with bright colors depicting space.  The jacket is 100% cotton, pearl weave, and the pants are 11 oz twill cotton pants. Aeroweave Ultra Lightweight Gold BJJ Gi Review

Rolling Light – The Advantages

The reason we’re looking for the best Lightweight BJJ Gi is that nobody likes to train grappling in armor. However, apart from comfort, there are a few other considerations when sometimes too lightweight kimonos. They don’t just help us get through training easier but also help us “cheat” the system a bit.

Namely, in competition terms, a lightweight Gi will allow you to have a much more relaxed weight cut if you need one at all. In comparison, regular Gis are twice as heavy. While not cheating per se, they do help you turn tournaments into more enjoyable experiences. Plus, competing in them is a lot more comfortable.

From a technical standpoint, lightweight GIs are much easier to manipulate. This means you can use lapels, collars, sleeves, etc to attack your opponent. You’ll be able to access your favorite Gi weapons much more easily than with regular Gis. Plus, people won’t be able to control you as much, because lightweight Gi’s are harder to manipulate with grips. There are also movement restrictions, which are non-existent with lightweight GIs. it is basically like rolling/competing No-Gi but with all the benefits of GI Jiu-Jitsu.

On a final note, there’s climate. In my opinion, lightweight GIs are not just the best, but the only option for people living in warm spots. Training with a full-on Gi in 95+ degree weather is neither fun nor reasonable. Lightweight GIs not only alleviate some of the discomforts but also provide much better ventilation than heavier GIs. Anyway, if you’re looking for the best jiu-jitsu GI of all weights check out our Best BJJ GI article.

The Gold BJJ Aeroweave is the lightest BJJ gi ever made (275 gsm compared to 350 gsm) and due to the reinforced stiching it’s a lot stronger than the cheaper lightweight gis. And because it’s relatively affordable I always recommend it.

Fuji Suparaito

lightweight travel gi

The Fuji Suparaito is a lightweight gi of 350 gsm (grams per square meter). It’s one of the most popular lightweight BJJ gis, and I’ve heard people say it’s more breathable than other lightweight models, but I can’t really tell the difference.

What is a lightweight gi for BJJ?

Before we can crown the best lightweight BJJ gi, we need to establish which gis count as lightweight. There’s no official rules for this, but I’ll use the following definition:

A lightweight BJJ gi is a gi that weighs 350 grams per square meter (gsm) or less .

This definition is not perfect, but it covers the vast majority of lightweight gis in Brazilian jiu jitsu.

For your reference: a normal BJJ gi is typically between 450gsm and 550gsm. So a lightweight gi is usually about 30% lighter than normal BJJ gis, which I think you’ll agree is a substantial difference.

How is the weight of a bjj gi reported?

BJJ gi weight cut

The weight of a BJJ kimono or gi jacket is expressed in grams per square meter (gsm) of fabric.

To make things confusing, the weight of gi pants is typically expressed in ounces per square yard, which always gets abbreviated to simply ounces (oz) . You can convert ounces per square yart to grams per square meter by multiplying them by 34; so gi pants that weigh 9oz, also weigh 306gsm.

Because gi weights are not expressed in absolute terms , you should also always look for a gi that’s slim fit, because if 2 gis have the same grams per square meter (gsm), but one has more meters because it’s more loose fitting, it’s still going to be heavier in terms of absolute weight.

Why do I Need a lightweight gi for BJJ?

There are three main reasons for buying a lightweight gi for BJJ:

  • Competition : the best BJJ competition gi is always a lightweight gi, because that helps you make weight more easily, and gives your opponent less to grab.
  • Hot weather : The best BJJ gi for hot weather is always a lightweight gi, just because it’s less hot to wear.
  • Comfort : this is subjective, but most people find that their most comfortable BJJ gi is made of lighter material.
  • Value for money : some lightweight gis are cheaper than normal, because they use less fabric.

However, even the best lightweight gi does not meet all 4 of these requirements. Instead, lightweight gis can be divided in 2 groups, where each group meets some of these requirements but not all of them.

The two types of light weight gi

Before I tell you what the best lightweight BJJ gi is, let me share what I think is the most important consideration when you buy a lightweight gi:

There’s two types of lightweight gis: cheap lightweight gis, and premium lightweight gis.

Their functions are completely different.

Premium lightweight bjj gis 💎

Premium lightweight gis are high quality , strong and durable gis, manufactured by major bjj gi brands.

The premium lightweight gi mainly suits the needs of competitors, as in competition a lightweight gi is a major advantage during the weight cut. The best BJJ competition gi will always be a premium lightweight gi.

Additionally, these gis suit the needs of those that predominantly train BJJ in hot weather conditions. The best BJJ gi for hot weather will be a premium lightweight gi, if you train more than twice a week and still want your lightweight gi to be durable.

Finally, some people think that a lightweight BJJ gi is  more comfortable than a heavier gi. Of course, this is subjective, but I definitely think my most comfortable BJJ gi is my lightest gi.

Which BJJ Gi Should I Buy?

Let me recommend you a gi based on your answers to 3 questions.

My top picks for: Beginner gis | Premium gis | Gi brands | Cheap gis | Lightweight gis | Gis for skinny guys | Gis for big guys | Durable gis

Cheap lightweight bjj gis 💲

Cheap lightweight gis are lower quality gis, manufactured by minor BJJ brands. But, they’re not terrible quality, and they should be durable enough for those that train Brazilian jiu jitsu casually.

The funny thing is that manufacturers of cheap lightweight gis, don’t really try to accomplish any other goal than to make cheap gis, but in the process they find out that they can cut costs by using less fabric . So the fact that these gis are lightweight is a byproduct, rather than their purpose.

Cheap lightweight gis are not suitable for competition , as they’re not really sturdy enough to handle that kind of intensity. The best competition gi for BJJ is always a premium gi .

But, cheap lightweight gis are not a bad choice for those that predominantly train in hot weather , or even for those that want an extra summer BJJ gi . The best BJJ gi for hot weather is still a premium one, but if you train twice a week or less, even a budget lightweight gi will last you quite long.

And they’re also suitable for those that want a lightweight gi because they find it more comfortable (again, comfort is a matter of preference).

The Best Lightweight BJJ Gis

Now that you know what to look for in a lightweight gi for BJJ, let’s get into my top rated lightweight BJJ gis and what I think is the very best lightweight BJJ gi.

1. Gold BJJ Ultra Lightweight Aeroweave

  • Way lighter than any other gi (275 grams per square meter))
  • Great quality
  • Best for hot weather, weight cutting and competition

The Gold BJJ Ultra Lightweight Aeroweave is by far the lightest BJJ gi on the market. It’s 275 gsm, which is 22% lighter than all the other lightweight BJJ gis (which are 350gsm). And it’s equally strong as any other lightweight jiu jitsu gi so you can feel secure if you compete in it.

I calculated that this gi is about 2 pounds lighter than regular gis and 1 pound lighter than any other lightweight gi for an A2 size (assuming an A2 gi is made of 5 square meters of fabric, which I think is on the low side). And I have been disqualified twice because I just missed my weight cut over less than a pound over the allowance, so if you compete, I think you should respect those two pounds!

So if you want the lightest and highest quality BJJ gi, for competition or just your normal training, this is the gi you should get.

2. Sanabul Essentials Ultra Light bjj gi

  • Affordable option
  • Lightweight

The Sanabul Essentials V2 Ultra light BJJ gi is a budget gi that’s lightweight because the manufacturer cuts cost by making the gi a little thinner than usual. This makes it a little less durable, but it’s actually an upside if you want to train BJJ in hot summer weather.

I wouldn’t recommend this gi as a competition gi, because you might want something stronger for that. But if you want a lightweight gi for the comfort or to cool down, this is your most affordable option.

3. Fuji Suparaito BJJ gi

lightweight travel gi

The Fuji Suparaito BJJ Gi is a good quality, lightweight gi.

And ‘Suparaito’ translates to ‘Super Lite’ in Japanese.

It’s 350 gsm which is standard for lightweight gis. I’ve heard multiple people say it’s the most breathable BJJ gi they ever had. (I don’t necessarily feel it’s more breathable than other lightweight gis, but maybe I’m crazy.)

4. Ice Weave lightweight gi

Best lightweight BJJ Gi for hot weather: IceWeave

  • Premium cooling technology
  • Best gi for hot weather

Attention: This gi is no longer being sold. I’ll leave it in here in case WarTribe ever brings it back, because I really liked their Ice Weave model.

The WarTribe Ice Weave gi is the best lightweight BJJ gi for those training in hot weather. If you sometimes feel like you’re overheating during training, this is the gi for you.

This gi uses a new ‘Ice’ weave to cool you down during training. This weave breathes more and allows sweat to evaporate more quickly from your skin, which cools you down on hot summer days.

The effects of overheating in BJJ can hardly be overstated. We normally work out in thick cloth jackets and pants, which overheats us and ruins our ability to keep training hard. Obviously, in all other sports they figured out before us that you should make your sports clothes of specially designed lightweight material. Thanks to WarTribe, we’re finally catching up.

This Ice Weave technology is patent pending, so if you train BJJ in hot weather, WarTribe will be your gi brand of choice for the foreseeable future.

5. Elite Sports ultra lightweight gi

Best BJJ Gi for beginners

I think this gi is somewhat comparable to the Sanabul Essentials BJJ gi. But I like the Sanabul gi a little better because it looks a little more classic. (And I know a lot of beginners that wear the Sanabul gi.

6. Hayabusa Ultra Lightweight Pearl weave Jiu Jitsu Gi

lightweight travel gi

  • 350 gram / m2

lightweight travel gi

This gi is in all regards very similar to the Fuji Suparaito. It’s the same weight, and it’s also nice for warm weather conditions and competitions.

Sadly I don’t train with anybody who owns this gi, but the customer reviews are positive.

7. Gameness air gi

lightweight travel gi

I don’t have a strong reason to prefer this Gameness gi over the Suparaito or the Hayabusa, but I’m mentioning this one because its sizes are a bit different from the other brands. So if you fall in between sizes for the other gis, you can check if this one fits you better.

Conclusion: What’s the best lightweight bjj gi?

To summarize, I think the Gold BJJ Aeroweave gi is far and away the best lightweight BJJ gi, simply because it’s lighter than all the other lightweight BJJ gis.

If you’re on a budget and you’re looking for a lightweight BJJ gi that you aren’t necessarily going to compete with or train hard in every day, I think the Elite sports ultra lightweight gi a good budget option.

What Does GSM Mean for a BJJ Gi?

GSM stands for Grams per square meter , which measures the weight of the fabric (or more exactly: the density times the thickness). It’s often used to measure the weight of a gi, because it’s independent of the gi size.

What is a Pearl Weave Gi?

A ‘weave’ refers to how the fabric in the gi is interlaced together, and the Pearl Weave is the most popular way to do this for BJJ Gis nowadays. It has surpassed the single weave, double weave and gold weave in popularity because of its light weight and toughness.

Is a judo gi lighter than a Brazilian jiu jitsu gi?

No, a judo gi is actually heavier than a jiu jitsu gi. That’s because in Judo they pull even more and even harder on their gi jacket than we do. For some models, the gi pants of a judo gi actually are lighter than those of a jiu jitsu gi, because the pants don’t get pulled on as much.

Is a karate gi lighter than a Brazilian jiu jitsu gi?

Yes, but that doesn’t make it a good lightweight gi for jiu jitsu. A karate gi is too flimsy and weak for jiu jitsu. They’re not made to be grabbed onto and they will break quickly.

Best Lightweight BJJ Gis 2024

  • June 5, 2023

bjj

If you regularly train in a Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Gi, then the word “lightweight” will definitely grab your attention. That’s because while training Jiu-Jitsu in a thick and heavy Gi is fine in cold seasons, it can be quite uncomfortable and make you feel overly stiff in the warmer times of the year. Continuing BJJ training in hot weather can be really convenient if you wear a lightweight BJJ Gi.

They are absolutely durable, long-lasting , and since they are made of pearl weave, the air can easily pass through them . It allows great mobility and the fighters can put in some extra sessions in those comfortable Gis as it won’t tire them like the heavy and rough ones.

Also, when you’ll feel cozy in a lightweight Gi, you’ll look forward to wearing them even more. Wearing BJJ Gis for practice or competitions won’t be challenging anymore if you have the right ones. The following list will offer you detailed ideas about the best BJJ Gi for hot weather, as well as the factors you need to consider while purchasing them.

Things to consider while buying your lightweight bjj gi 2024, weave type and gsm.

Weave refers to the way the fabric is knitted and it makes the differences in the weight and strength of your BJJ Gi. Various styles make a variation in the heaviness of the Gi along with affecting the durability of it. In general, pearl weave is the ideal style for a light and durable Gi. The other styles are gold weave, single weave, and double weave; even though single weave is lightweight too, it doesn’t seem to last as long as pearl weave.

Another factor to consider when looking for a Gi is to check the GSM . You might be wondering why it’s important! Well, it’s ‘ grams per sq meter ’, which refers to the weight of your Gi. Now, if you want a lightweight Gi, you’ll go for a low GSM under 450 .

If you want to buy a Gi to use for tournaments, then you need to get one that’d be approved by IBJJF. IBJJF has some rules so that everyone can be on equal grounds and one of them is color. Gis with a different color other than white, black, and royal blue will be out of the picture.

IBJJF Certified

You are required to ensure if your Gi is IBJJF certified or not. This thing certifies the Gis as competition level and not wearing one of them means that you can’t be allowed to compete. If they are certified, that’s certainly for a reason; so, always double-check that your Gi is IBJJF certified, or else, you might end up preparing so hard for nothing.

Size of the Gi

It’s a must to buy the right size. The Gi must fit comfortably and comply with the IBJJF rules. Here, an important piece of information is that while you wash a Gi for the first time, it’s prone to shrink, despite it claiming otherwise. Keeping that in memory, it’s better to buy a bigger size so that you don’t face any issues later.

Collars and Sleeves

Since collars and sleeves can impact your performance while practicing, you need to consider some points regarding it. The sleeves of your Gi can’t be hanging loose as it may lead to entanglement. As for the collars, thicker and stiffer ones are better than the thinner ones because your opponent can’t establish a grip on you.

A general guideline for Gi is that standard Gis are expensive. But obviously this doesn’t imply that you’ll go and buy any Gi that you see with a high price tag; you need to verify if it’s got all the qualities to justify that price. You can also check out our review of cheaper Gis .

You’ll always want a Gi from a high-quality manufacturer . For lightweight Gis, you’ll want it even more, just so it doesn’t tear when someone gets a grip on you. However, some brands of Gi are staples in the game for a good reason and you can always trust their products. Keep reading the article to know more about them.

Best Lightweight BJJ Gi 2024 (& Suitable for Hot Weather)

Fuji Suparaito BJJ GI

This Gi has superior quality, long-lasting design, and can fit just about everyone. It has used the pearl weave to make it lightweight but has been made from the firmest fabric which makes it really durable. You’ll definitely stand out in a crowd wearing such a unique and flashy Gi. For a brand like Fuji, the quality can do the talking.

Fuji has come up with half sizes, just so almost everyone can get a perfect fitting. As it will fit you closely, there would be no excess material and it’d be a bit tougher for your competitor to get a grip. On the other hand, it has royal blue, white, and black color, which means all the colors that are IBJJF certified. After washing, it will shrink very little, still giving you incredible mobility and breathability. All things considered, this amazing lightweight Gi won’t stretch or tear easily and you’ll love everything it offers.

However, the issue faced right out of the gate is its price; but you’ve got to understand what you’re getting for that cost. The service it provides is top-notch!

  • Has a variety of sizes
  • Pearl weave
  • Triple reinforced ripstop pants
  • IBJJF approved
  • Perfect design for competitions
  • Good range of colors
  • The fabric might feel a bit strange

Hayabusa, being among one of the famous names in the game is very familiar among martial artists. They are quite famous for their high-quality gear. It’s been made using pearl weave cotton material which is the sturdiest type of weave used in the construction of lightweight Gi. You’ll be extremely comfortable in this remarkable lightweight and durable Gis. This one is available in nine different color combinations, giving you plenty of options to choose from.

Unfortunately, the product is costly. But if you seriously want to find a long-standing lightweight Gi, you’ve to know that good gear is worth breaking out the wallet. Also, it will meet the demand of anyone on the hunt for a good Gi.

  • Can withstand years of training and competition
  • 420-gsm pearl weave cotton fabric
  • Subtle design
  • Feels wonderful because of the premium fabric
  • Comes in nine colors
  • Comes pre-washed to hold the color

Flow Kimonos Air BJJ Jiu Jitsu Gi

The Flow Kimonos Air Gi is on the list of best BJJ Gi for hot weather for tons of different reasons. To start, it’s understandable that the company pulled out all the stops possible to pose their best work. The jacket is made from 350-gsm pearl weave fabric, and as you already know that this fabric is tough, long-lasting, and light. It’s got some pretty solid seams on the collar which makes it a bit stiffer than the collars without a double stitch. Now, for the pants, they are made from tough ripstop cotton material so it won’t split easily while you’re doing some heavy rolling.

Besides, you might already be aware of the fact that a lot of cotton Gis can shrink upon you. But this Gi claims to be ‘pre-shrunk’, so even if it shrinks, you won’t notice it. Similarly, you’ll have a wide range of sizes at your disposal and you can easily find a Gi that fits you.

Even during hot summers, you won’t feel like you’re drowning in a pool of sweat, as the lightweight Gi is wonderfully breathable. This IBJJF compliant Gi can be used in tournaments too; so, it won’t be necessary to swap out of your gear while getting ready for it.

Lastly, we’re going to have to look at the price tag and that’s somewhere between average and high. Overall, for everything they offer, the price is reasonable.

  • 350-gsm pearl weave
  • Comes in nine sizes to fit anyone
  • 8oz ripstop cotton pants
  • Lightweight
  • High-density foam is used for the drawstring
  • Not the cheapest Gi out there

Sanabul Essentials V.2 Ultra-Light Jiu-Jitsu Gi

Sanabul Essential V.2 Gi

This lightweight summer Gi is no less than perfection. If you are new to this sport, then this is just what you need to have in your cupboard. It’s ‘pre-shrunk’ and won’t shrink much after the first wash. It comes in six colors along with a good variety of designs. You won’t have to spend a fortune to buy it either. This Sanabul Gi is very durable and is going to last for a long time. They come with some special factors like rubber collars, dens-knit embroidery, and a free belt, which makes it a perfect package for anyone.

The only drawback it has is its limited size but if you have the desired size, then you’re good to go for it.

  • Lightweight
  • Single weave design
  • Stays dry and clean
  • Limited sizes

Gameness Air Lightweight Gi

lightweight travel gi

It’s one of the best BJJ Gis for hot weather because of its moderate price and high-quality. You don’t have to spend as much as you would for good quality Gis out there; it’s quite budget-friendly. For the lightweight design, pearl weave has been used. With only 350-gsm, this is a soft, light, and comfortable Gi for both training and tournament.

Speaking of the design, it doesn’t have tons of patches on it; there is simply the Gameness logo on the arms which are not that huge and flashy. So, it’s not overdone with branding. On the other hand, you’ll be glad to know that it comes in blue, white, and black i.e., all the IBJJF certified colors. It’s got a basic and subtle look, so you can go for it if you want something cost-effective.

  • Ripstop pants
  • Wide range of sizes
  • Half sizes not available
  • Shrinks a bit more after the first wash

Gold BJJ Aeroweave Gi

Gold BJJ Aeroweave Gi

The Gold BJJ Aeroweave is one of the lightest Gis out there. But due to its reinforced stitch, it’s super durable. It has been made from 275-gsm material using the aero weave. The manufacturer made it ultra-lightweight by maintaining its strength and stability. This would be ideal for training during the summer as you won’t be drenched in sweat. You also get 10oz ripstop pants along with it, isn’t it a great upgrade over the cotton Gi pants? That is because these pants are more breathable and firmer, saving you from the splits during training.

The Gi is available in black, white, navy, and grey, but only the white and black one is IBJJF approved. The collar is another important part of Gi which should be solid and stiff just so it doesn’t become a liability for you. Gold BJJ Gi provides such collars to give you comfort. Besides, it comes in all the common sizes, so everyone will be able to fit into these. The price point of these Gis is also quite fair as it’s strong enough to be used consistently.

  • Ultra-lightweight
  • Moderate price tag
  • Can be used in BJJ competitions
  • Comes in four colors with minimalist branding
  • 10oz ripstop pants
  • The sizes might be a little bigger

Elite Sports Ultra-Light Gi

Elite Sports Ultra-Light Gi

Elite Sports already has a good reputation in fighting gear and they offer one of the best Gis. This Gi is great as it’s not costly but still provides everything that you require in the product.

Its fabric is pre-shrunk; thus, you won’t have to bother about it getting smaller. Following the instructions while washing it would be enough. Now to speak of the materials, its lightweight 400-gsm is quite light and sturdy. You can even use these on the mats for a long period without having them torn. In contrast, the pants are a bit less safeguarded against damage since ripstop fabrics are not used in them.

The collars in these Gis are great too. It’s extra stiff and thick, so your opponent can’t grab you easily. You’ll also love the color variation that’s available for these Gis. If you like a little stylish outfit, then you can go for the exotic colors.

For such a low price, it’s a solid design and durable Gi which will be worth your every penny.

  • Comes in 10 sizes
  • Wide range of colors
  • No shrinkage
  • Free white belt
  • Reduces the risk of bad odor
  • Pants are a little less durable

Tatami Zero G V4 Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Gi

Tatami Zero G V4 Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Gi

It’s a great entry into the list of best lightweight Gi. Since it’s IBJJF certified, you can wear it during the competitions. It’s available in two colors and its unique stitch in the jackets and the pants make them stand out a bit more. You can find all the normal sizes for this Gi from A0 to A6 and almost all people can comfortably roll in it.

As for the material, the jacket is made with some strong material using pearl weave of 475-gsm. It’s slightly heavier compared to the other lightweight Gis that we have mentioned. Furthermore, this Gi is constructed from twill cotton and doesn’t claim to be pre-shrunk either, so you need to be prepared to see a fair amount of shrinkage after the first wash. Considering this shrinkage, it would be sensible to go for a bigger size while purchasing the Gi.

Now, if you look at the pants, you’ll notice that they have got quite strong seams in them. Even though the diagonal stitches look unusual, they are really helpful to keep your pants together. You can conveniently train and compete in this Gi without the material hindering your movement. It has moderate pricing with pretty good service. Not to mention, they are also available in female-cuts now, so you can say goodbye to your unisex Gis.

  • Diagonal stitching in pants
  • Huge variation in sizes
  • Branding patches make it tougher to form a grip
  • Not the best lightweight Gi
  • Not pre-shrunk

The Best Lightweight BJJ Gi: How to Choose the Right One

Looking for the best lightweight BJJ gi? It can be tough to find the right one with all the different brands and styles on the market these days. In this article, I will help you choose the best lightweight BJJ gi. I’ll discuss some factors you need to consider when making your decision, and I’ll recommend a few of my favorite options.

The Best Lightweight Gis for 2024

These are the gis I’ve personally used and can recommend:

Gold BJJ Ultra Lightweight Aeroweave

lightweight bjj gi

The Gold BJJ Ultra Lightweight Aeroweave is the lightest BJJ gi on the market. It is 275gsm, which is 22% lighter than all the other lightweight BJJ gis. This makes it a great choice if you want a lightweight gi that is still very durable. Ideal choice for training in hot weather or for competition.

The Gi is also pre-shrunk, so you don’t have to worry about it shrinking in the wash. The light and durable pants are made from a tough ripstop material that is light and breathable. The pants also have a comfortable drawstring waist that will keep them securely in place during training.

This Gi also comes with a satisfaction guarantee, so you can be sure that you are getting a quality product.

So if you want the lightest and highest quality BJJ gi , for competition or just regular training, this is the gi you should get.

FUJI Lightweight BJJ Gi

lightweight bjj gi

Looking for a lightweight BJJ Gi that still offers superior protection and comfort? Look no further than the FUJI Lightweight BJJ Gi.

The jacket is made of durable Pearl Weave material and is 450g in weight, making it perfect for those hot summer days or intense training sessions.

The thick rubber collar resists mildew and bacteria build-up, while the traditional twill drawstring provides a snug and comfortable fit. The pants are made of 100% cotton twill and are preshrunk to ensure minimal shrinkage.

Best of all, this BJJ Gi dries quickly, so you can get back to training as soon as possible. Approved by the IBJJF, NABJJF, and UAEJJF, the FUJI Lightweight BJJ Gi is a must-have for any serious martial artist.

I was really excited to get my hands on another Gi from the company. I had previously purchased a Sekia Gi and loved it, so I was curious to see how this one compared.

The fabric is a little less soft than I would have liked, but it’s nothing that a little bit of care can’t fix. Overall, I’m very happy with the fit and feel of the Gi. It’s definitely comparable to the most expensive options on the market.

Fuji Suparaito BJJ Gi

lightweight bjj gi

Looking for a lightweight BJJ Gi that doesn’t sacrifice quality? Fuji Suparaito might be the perfect option for you. This Gi is designed to be lightweight and comfortable without sacrificing any of the durability or features you need in a good BJJ Gi. The stiff collars keep your opponent from getting a grip, while the triple reinforced rip stop pants with bungee cord drawstring keep you safe and secure during training.

The Suparaito weights 350gsm, which is the same weight as other lightweight gis. I don’t have one myself, but some of my training partners do, and they seem to like it.

To me, there aren’t any significant distinctions between this lightweight gi and the other “common” lightweight gis I discuss below in this list. The only reason I like the Suparaito over the rest is because I know people who own it and enjoy it, and because all of my other Fuji gis are very sturdy. And I trust Fuji as a company since it’s well-known, so I never worry whether I’m wearing a weird gi.

Hayabusa Lightweight BJJ Gi

lightweight bjj gi

Looking for a lightweight, IBJJF-certified gi that won’t break the bank? Hayabusa has you covered with their Lightweight BJJ Gi.

The Hayabusa Lightweight BJJ Gi is the perfect gi for training or competition (IBJJF compliant). Made from a high-quality 420-gsm pearl-weave cotton, it is extremely durable and built to last.

The gi is also pre-treated to prevent color fade, so it will look like new wash after wash. The 8oz ripstop cotton-polyester blend pants are comfortable to wear, and the drawstring provides the perfect fit.

This lightweight gi has reinforced seams to withstand years of strenuous training and competitions. Its subtle design focuses on fit, feel, and function.

The premium fabric was stitched using a pearl weave, which is light, durable, and perfect for those hot extended grappling sessions.

This gi is very similar to the Fuji Suparaito. They are both the same weight, and they are both good for warm weather conditions and competitions.

Sanabul V.2 Ultra Lightweight BJJ Gi

lightweight bjj gi

Sanabul Gis are some of the highest quality, best value BJJ gear available. As a result, it’s no surprise they provide a light-weight option. The Essentials V.2 is a lightweight single weave Gi that is IBJJF legal and ideal for training. Even though single weave isn’t regarded to have the greatest quality, Sanabul adds strengthening to keep the fabric durable and comfortable. The antimicrobial and anti-odor properties of this Gis are fantastic; they’re particularly important for sweaty, lengthy rolling sessions.

The Essentials V.2 is also available for women, and they make a wonderful value kids version, too. Because the Sanabul Gis are larger than other Gi brands , keep that in mind when purchasing. They’re also pre-shrunk for convenience.

Elite Sports Ultra-Lightweight Gi

lightweight bjj gi

Elite Sports ultra-lightweight gi is a great option for those looking for a summer gi. It’s very thin and perfect for hot weather training. The downside is that it’s not very durable, but maybe you don’t need that. The pants are also almost see through, so you’ll need to be careful about what you wear underneath.

Not everyone requires a premium high-quality BJJ gi. If you just need a cheap gi to train in the heat and aren’t interested in competing, I believe this is a good option. For that reason, I purchased one. I’ll only wear it during the summer months, and I won’t compete in it. So, if you’re looking for a lightweight gi without having to pay extra for quality or anything like that, I think this may be the best lightweight BJJ gi for you.

Progress Academy Lightweight Gi

lightweight bjj gi

If you’re looking for a cheap, lightweight Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Gi that is both durable and stylish, the Progress Academy Lightweight Gi is perfect for you.

This kimono is made of 375GSM Pearl Weave cotton and has 8 oz Ripstop Trousers, making it tough but lightweight. It also features a clean, minimalist design and is 100% IBJJF legal. Plus, it comes with a free white belt! So if you’re new to Jiu Jitsu or are looking for a new gi for your collection, the Progress Academy Lightweight Gi is a great choice.

This lightweight gi by Progress Academy is durable and perfect for any training situation. It is also lightweight and quick-drying, making it a great choice for all athletes.

Why Use a Lightweight Gi for BJJ?

There are a few reasons:

  • A good BJJ competition gi is always a lightweight gi. This makes it easier for you to make weight, and it also makes it harder for your opponent to grab onto you.
  • If you train in the summer , or in a hot climate, a lightweight gi will help keep you cool and comfortable
  • A lighter gi is also more comfortable and easier to move in because of lighter material.
  • Lightweight gis tend to be less expensive than heavier options because they use less fabric.
  • And finally, some people simply prefer the feel of a lighter gi.

The Types of Lightweight BJJ Gis

Premium lightweight gis are high quality and durable bjj gis that are suited for competitors and people who train in hot weather conditions.

Cheap lightweight gis are lower quality gis that are manufactured by minor BJJ brands, but they are not terrible quality and should be durable enough for those that train Brazilian jiu jitsu casually.

Premium Lightweight Gis

Premium lightweight gis are high-quality, strong, and long-lasting BJJ uniforms produced by well-known gi manufacturers. The premium lightweight gi is generally used for competition since a lightweight gi aids in the weight cut. A premium lightweight BJJ competition kimono will always be the finest.

Additionally, these gis are good for people who train BJJ in hot weather conditions. The best BJJ gi for hot weather will be a premium lightweight gi, if you train more than twice a week and still want your lightweight gi to be durable.

Finally, some people believe that a lightweight BJJ gi is more comfortable than a heavier gi. Of course, this is subjective, but I believe that my lightest BJJ gi is the most comfortable one for me.

Cheap Lightweight Gis

Low-quality gis made by tiny BJJ brands are known as cheap lightweight gis. They aren’t completely bad, and for those that train Brazilian jiu jitsu casually, they should be durable enough. The amusing thing is that because manufacturers of low-cost lightweight gis don’t try to accomplish anything more than produce low-cost gis, they often unintentionally end up making a better product.

Because cheap lightweight gis aren’t robust enough to endure intense competition, they’re not appropriate for it. The greatest BJJ gi for hot weather is always a premium one. However, even a budget lightweight gi will last you a long time if you train twice per week or less.

And they’re also good for people who want a light gi because they find it more comfortable (again, comfort is a matter of preference).

Disadvantages of an Ultralight Gi

There are virtually no disadvantages to wearing a lightweight or ultralight gi. Some people, on the other hand, may prefer a conventional gi for various reasons. When you buy a lightweight gi, make sure it’s of good quality. The majority of top gi producers provide an ultralight version that meets their usual standards, but there are some that are weak and readily tear. The fit is generally looser, making it simpler to take grip and control. Plus, it’s a little easier to get feet and hands caught, which bothers some people.

Training with a heavy gi in a hot Brazilian gym can be uncomfortable, but it makes your training more intense and helps you get stronger. If you can handle it, you’ll be better off for it in the end.

While there is no serious disadvantage to a lightweight gi, they aren’t always required. It’s all about personal taste.

What to consider when choosing a lightweight BJJ gi?

Ibjjf certification.

If you intend to compete, double-checking that your Gi is IBJJF legal is essential. You may wind up doing a difficult training camp for nothing if you don’t.

The weave of a fabric is the biggest difference-maker in the weight of a Gi. There are different styles of weaving, and each one makes the Gi heavier or lighter, and also affects how strong the Gi is.

In general, pearl weave is a good style for a light but durable Gi. Other styles include gold weave, single weave and double weave (double weave Gis are usually heavier). Single weave style is very lightweight as well, but doesn’t tend to last as long as pearl weave.

GSM stands for “grams per square meter” and it is the weight of your Gi. The lighter the Gi, the lower the GSM.

Most Gis range from 375-890 GSM, though you can find heavier or lighter ones. A lightweight Gi is generally under 450 GSM.

Choosing the appropriate size is critical. Both so that it feels good, and also so that it follows IBJJF regulations.

Finally, you should almost always purchase a Gi from a reputable manufacturer, especially if you’re buying a lightweight Gi. It’s simple to like a Gi that feels fantastic, but the first time someone gets a grip on you, it tears. If you’ve been involved in BJJ for long enough, you’ll probably recognize most of the big brands.

What is the lightest BJJ Gi?

The Gold BJJ Ultra Lightweight Aeroweave is the lightest BJJ gi on the market. It’s 275gsm, which is 22% lighter than all the other lightweight BJJ gis (which are 350gsm). And it’s equally strong as any other lightweight jiu-jitsu gi, so you can feel safe when you compete.

Are lightweight BJJ gis better than regular ones?

It depends on what you mean by “better.” A lightweight Gi is more comfortable in hot weather and generally cooler to train in. They’re also usually cheaper than a regular Gi, so if you’re looking to save some money, a lightweight Gi is a good choice.

However, a regular Gi will last longer and is often more durable. If you train hard, a regular Gi will probably hold up better than a lightweight one.

What are the different kinds of BJJ Gi weaves and which is best?

The four main types of BJJ Gi weaves are single, double, gold, and pearl. Single weave Gis are the lightest but don’t last as long, while double weave Gis are heavier but more durable. Gold weave Gis are in between in terms of weight and durability. Pearl weave Gis are usually a good all-around choice because they’re lightweight and strong.

Why use a lightweight gi for bJJ?

The main reason to use a lightweight gi is for comfort. If it’s hot outside or you’re training in a hot gym, a lightweight Gi will help you stay cool. They’re also generally cheaper than regular Gis, so if you’re looking to save some money, a lightweight Gi is a good choice.

Jiu jitsu gi size chart, gold bjj gi size chart.

This size chart is for unisex sizes (A0 to A5) for all of our gis . We also offer our gis in womens' and kids' cuts.

You might find that your frame is suitable for multiple sizes - gi sizing is a matter of personal taste. If you like a tighter, more slim fitting cut you should err toward the smaller size. If you prefer extra room in your gi you can choose the larger size in your range.

While we use pre-shrunk fabric in all of our gis, you can still expect some shrinkage (especially if you're washing in hot water, or tumble drying). A good rule of thumb is heavier weight gis (like our Valiant or Calavera ) will shrink more than lighter weight gis (like our Aeroweave ). For more information on gi shrinkage, check out this video .

Not sure if you're choosing the right size? We get it, gi sizing can be tricky. That's why we offer totally free pre-paid returns .

Gold BJJ Aeroweave Ultralight Gi Review

Sizing was off

It was very lightweight and comfortable although I had to send it back in and wait for a refund before purchasing the correct size. But I guess that’s the main problem with a lot of these companies that sell GI’s since there are never any local distributors.

Outstanding Gi

Cant beat this Gi: either based off quality or price. Gold BJJ has quickly become my “go to” vendor for all BJJ gear. Top notch quality and customer service.

Buy this gi. It’s so worth every cent. It’s super lightweight it feels like wearing pajamas. No bs. Definitely recommend. Go true to their size chart and it’ll fit like a dream

Feels great

I was worried the gi was too big when I bought it. I washed it and it shrunk down to the perfect size. The same size as my foundation gi. The aeroweave is light and super comfortable!

BJJ Globetrotters’ New Travel Gi: New Much of a Good Thing?

lightweight travel gi

Back in 2015 we reviewed the BJJ Globetrotters gi , which received our highest praises.  The innovative company has released another iteration of their specialized travel gi and sent us one to compare to the original version.  How does the newer version stack up to the original?

YOU CAN BUY THIS AWESOME TRAVEL GI RIGHT HERE!

Introduction.

lightweight travel gi

BJJ Globetrotter was founded by Danish black belt Christian Graugart, a proud and avid BJJ Globetrotter.  Graugart’s travels were documented in his book, and his company BJJ Globetrotters has made it their mission to help jiujiteiros around the world get the most out of traveling and training.

The original gi they sent over was the grey travel gi.  This gi is the black colourway of their new version.  The original gi is to date one of the nicest ultra lightweight gis I’ve ever had the pleasure of reviewing

lightweight travel gi

Like the first gi this one arrived with some extras.  Their first model was sent to me with a keychain and a bottle opener, this version arrived with some nifty sunglasses and a watch.  Also included was a BJJ Globetrotters patch (the original version had this patch affixed around the midsection.)

Disclosures

This Gi was submitted to me free of charge (by way of gireviews.net) for review.  I have never done any work with or for BJJ Globetrotters.

lightweight travel gi

I’m 6’1, 195.  The best fit for me is an A2L.  This gi is an A3, but it fit me fine.  I found the cut to be a bit boxy, I actually preferred the old cut to this one.  Maybe an A2L would have been a bit better.

lightweight travel gi

This gi is very similar to the original and it has a ton of awesome details.  The only difference noticeable from across the room is absence of a Globetrotters patch sewn on at the factory.  Instead, BJJ Globetrotters opted to send the patch as a separate item to allow the user to customize their own gi.  Might have saved them a bit of money, and definitely a smart move (I personally am not a huge fan of big patches on my gis unless they’re from my team or sponsors.)

lightweight travel gi

It is made of 100% black rip stop, with white piping and rope loops.  The bottom of the back of the top has waves embroidered onto it, the original version of these waves on the grey gi had a couple of colours, this version is tonal black to give it that murdered look.  I actually personally prefer that.  There is an airplane embroidered in between the shoulders.

lightweight travel gi

On the original version one arm had the BJJ Globetrotters logo as does one of the pant legs.  On this version both arms have the logo.

lightweight travel gi

The inside of the lapel has birds printed onto it; these faded slightly over time on both versions.  The seam tape was changed from a black and grey colour scheme with waves and branding on it to a similar design featuring the same waves but with the text on the seamtape on the bottom of the jacket “The Gentle Art of Travel”, this is present throughout the entire gi and pants.

lightweight travel gi

For me, the key difference between the new version and the old version is the texture of the ripstop.  The original ripstop was a bit smoother while this one has a more pronounced texture.  This doesn’t affect anything at all in my mind, but if you’re sensitive to textures the original version may have been better for you.

lightweight travel gi

BJJ Globetrotters built their jackets to have all of the advantages of a full weight gi while still being ultra light weight.  That is to say: the lapel is very thick and unyielding while the rest of the gi is paper thin (though not paper flimsy!)  I found the lapel on this new model to be ever so slightly thinner than the older version.

lightweight travel gi

The embroidery on the bottom of the back of the gi is gorgeous.  I’ve never seen another gi company use that space for the design and it is amazing.  It has no bearing on the function of the gi, but it adds to the aesthetics of it.  I am partial to the new tonal design because I love tonal coloration.

lightweight travel gi

I like the globetrotters logo on both arms, one item of note is that they’ve changed this logo slightly, the original had a bit of yellow in it, this one is black white and red.  I like the toning down.

lightweight travel gi

The trousers haven’t changed much.  Nice soft rip stop, the original version had 4 loops  while 2.0 has 6 which doesn’t really affect anything for me.  Like the older version this new version has 2 layers of ripstop over the knees

lightweight travel gi

The bottom of the right leg has a BJJ Globetrotters embroidery.

lightweight travel gi

Otherwise there’s not a whole lot to say about the pants.  They’re nice.  They fit well.  And they are super comfy like the rest of the gi.

lightweight travel gi

Rolling Performance

lightweight travel gi

The thick lapel made the gi top work nicely in rolling.  Most 100% rip stop travel gis I’ve seen have relatively thin lapels which can serve as a tactical disadvantage.  Not the Globetrotter.

lightweight travel gi

The fit of this gi was a bit odd for me.  The first iteration fit considerably better.  It's not that the gi was ill fitted, but the other one felt more tailored.

lightweight travel gi

The lightness of the gi means it doesn’t absorb sweat very well, so it soaks through and feel like a wet pair of jeans.  This takes a bit of getting used to, but it’s kind of the nature of a soft cottony rip stop.  One thing I found interesting was that the textured V2.0 seemed to be slightly more absorbent which was nice, still way less than a normal gi.

Great read:  2018 GUIDE:  TOP 7 LIGHTWEIGHT GIS FOR SUMMER

lightweight travel gi

In my opinion the BJJ Globetrotters Gi is still bar none the best 100% rip stop travel gi on the market right now.  Comfortable, well fitted and beautiful.

If you need a lightweight and/or travel gi this would be my recommendation.  You can find one in your color of choice (grey, white or blue).  Right now they’re clearing their 2.0 stock and have reduced their price, go to www.bjjglobetrotters.com you won’t regret it.

Gold BJJ Aeroweave Gi Review: Best Lightweight BJJ Gi?

By Tsavo Neal Updated: November 10, 2023 BJJ Gear 2 Comments

gold bjj aeroweave gi review

The Aeroweave Ultralight Gi by Gold BJJ is their signature lightweight gi. It’s advertised as being 40% lighter than a standard gi . As someone who plays a fast-paced, athletic style, I was excited to switch from a heavy judo gi to a lightweight BJJ gi.

Overall, I love how light this gi feels, how durable it is, and its aesthetic design . However, this doesn’t mean that the gi is the right gi for everyone. A lightweight gi does have its trade-offs , and I’ll discuss those below.

In this Gold BJJ Aeroweave Gi review, I’m going to share my in-depth experience training in this gi — and help you decide whether or not it’s the right gi for you .

Construction details, takeaway thoughts, review summary: gold bjj aeroweave gi.

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ (4.75/5 Stars)

The Aeroweave Ultralight Gi is a superb BJJ gi. It’s lightweight, durable, and stylish . As someone who likes to roll fast, this gi makes me feel lighter and easier to flow. For that reason, it’s my new primary gi for gi classes. The only potential drawbacks of this gi is the looser sizing and the fact that lightweight gis tends to make grip fighting harder.

The Gold BJJ Aeroweave Gi

Gold BJJ Gi Vs Other BJJ Gis: Comparison Chart

Who should invest in the gold bjj aeroweave gi.

If you train in a hot environment, you feel “slow” in a heavier gi, or you’re just looking for a main gi that happens to be on the lightweight side , the Gold BJJ Aeroweave Gi is an excellent choice.

I like to play a fast-paced, athletic, no-gi style, so I love training in this gi. When I train in this gi, it’s almost like I’m training no-gi — it feels that light . Compared to a judo gi, it’s a night-and-day difference. I feel less restricted, and it’s easier to “flow.”

In terms of price, the Aeroweave is comparable to other lightweight gi. However, Gold BJJ stands out from other BJJ gi brands with their emphasis on customer support . They respond to questions quickly and with detailed answers. And they back all of their gear with the Gold BJJ Guarantee: “If for any reason you’re not thrilled with your purchase, we’ll replace or refund your order no-questions-asked.”

For my gi testing process, the Aeroweave BJJ G i performed extremely well. Below are my three favorite things about this gi.

1. Ultralight

This Aeroweave is as light as advertised. It’s a difference you can feel while you’re drilling and sparring. The average BJJ gi is between 375-900gsm. At 275gsm, the Aeroweave is one of the lightest BJJ gis on the market . In addition, the gi pants feel lighter and more breathable than standard gi pants .

The gi is 40% lighter than standard gis, and while you wear it, YOU feel at least 20% lighter. I feel quicker and more agile while wearing this gi . And I sweat far less, so my body stays cooler, allowing for me to push the pace and train more rounds. I think that my game (fast-paced, athletic) and body type (lanky, wiry strength, long legs) suit a lightweight gi well.

origin gi vs aeroweave gi

Orgin gi next to the Gold BJJ Aeroweave gi

And because it’s so light, it dries quickly . I wash my Aeroweave gi at 10:00 pm after I get home from class, and hang dry it from my pull-up bar. It’s bone dry when I wake up 8 hours later, and that’s without using a fan to dry it . My other judo gi would take twice as long to dry. Instead of using two gis for training due to slow drying time, you can simply wear your Aeroweave gi.

2. Durability

Because the gi is so light, it feels as though it’s weak. That’s not the case. Despite its light weight, the gi is strong and durable . I’ve had a few spazzy white belts tug on it with all of their strength, and there’s been no wear and tear.

aeroweave gi durability

Doing the pull-up test on the Aeroweave gi

I will update this review in 6 months or so after I’ve beat up this gi a bit more. But for the first few weeks of manhandling, it’s performed very well .

I love how the Aeroweave gi looks. The first time I wore it to my gym,  my instructor and training partners commented on how nice the gi looked.

It’s minimal, but not boring . It has some cool details that make the gi “pop:” the light blue stitching (matches great with a blue belt), the beautiful Gold BJJ logo patches, and the “For The Journey” branding on the inside lining of the gi.

aeroweave gi

Side shot of the Aeroweave gi

It’s clear to me that Gold BJJ puts an emphasis on style and aesthetics . And the Aeroweave’s design is a huge plus.

Compared to other gis I’ve worn, I’ve quickly grown to prefer the Aeroweave gi . However, there are some potential drawbacks depending on your personal preferences.

1. Sizing Runs A Bit Big & Loose

I like a gi that fits a bit tighter and more snugly. However, the Aeroweave gi is a bit baggier and looser than I would prefer .

It also runs a bit big. On my first wear, it felt a tad oversized even though it comes pre-shrunk.

However, I was able to shrink my Aeroweave gi so that it fits right . Thanks to Gold BJJ’s guide to gi care , it was easy for me to shrink my Aeroweave gi. I’ll cover how I did that in the next section on the sizing and fit.

2. Lightweight Gis Makes Breaking Grips Difficult

The main trade-off of a lightweight gi is that it makes grip fighting harder .

Because the gi is so light and soft, it makes it easier for your training partners to get and maintain grips on your collar or sleeve .

“Have had many comments about how soft it feels from training partners. The downside of both the softness and the lightness, is good f******* luck breaking grips. If someone catches me in lasso or spider guard, it’s absolute hell . Because of that it’s ended up as my backup.” – u/kovnev

I like to take the Jocko approach here. Gripfighting will be harder in this gi? GOOD! It will force me to improve my grip-breaking ability . It might suck in the short term, but over the long term, this will improve my game.

With a lightweight gi like the Aeroweave, you trade more mobility and speed for more difficult grip fighting . For me, based on my game, that’s a trade-off I’m willing to accept. But that’s the question you’ll have to answer when you’re thinking about investing in the Aeroweave gi (or any lightweight gi, for that matter).

Aeroweave Ultralight Gi Sizing & Fit

Gold BJJ provides a handy Gi size chart so that you can pick the right size for you:

lightweight travel gi

At 6’1″ and 182 pounds, my recommended size is A2L . That’s the size that I ordered.

I find that the   Aeroweave Ultralight BJJ Gi is a looser-fitting gi for both the jacket and pants .

On my first wear, it felt a little baggy . The sleeves ran a bit long, despite having long arms for my height (my wingspan is 6’4″).

Thankfully, Gold BJJ sends you a guide for gi care , which provides clear instructions for how to shrink your gi.

Here’s what I did to shrink my Aeroweave gi down to the right size :

  • Washed my gi in the washing machine using warm water.
  • Dried it for 30 minutes on a low setting.
  • Took it out to check on the fit.
  • Let it hang dry.

After these 4 steps, both the Aeroweave gi jacket and gi pants shrank down to the right size .

So, although it comes a bit loose and baggy, it’s simple to shrink it so that it’s the perfect size for you .

aeroweave bjj gi

Me wearing the Aeroweave gi after shrinking it

The Aeroweave Ultralight Gi costs $129.99 USD .

This puts it in the midrange in terms of BJJ gi pricing . At this price, it’s comparable to other lightweight BJJ gis.

If you’re looking for a midrange-priced gi — and the idea of wearing lightweight gi appeals to you — then it’s an excellent investment. The fact that it doesn’t cost more than other midrange gis, despite being noticeably lighter, makes it a solid choice for your day-to-day gi .

Here are the construction details for the Aeroweave Ultralight Gi that impact its weight, durability, and longevity:

7 Best Lightweight Gis (Ranked and Reviewed 2023)

in   Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu

minute/s reading time

There are several factors to consider when purchasing a Gi for Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. Gis generally come in either light, medium, or heavyweights. Medium weights are the typical entry-level uniform for beginners to the sport. Heavier weight Gis tend to be more durable for those who train more intensely or more frequently. Lightweight Gis are made of less material and more lightweight cotton.

They are the choice of many athletes but not for all. Key reasons for not choosing a lighter Gi include durability and feel. Many students are more comfortable in a medium weight Gi, and others grow accustomed to the heavier variety. In this article, I will set out some reasons to consider purchasing a lightweight Gi. I will move on to some essential considerations before purchasing and will conclude with the seven best lightweight Gis available on Amazon today.

A quick look at the best lightweight Gis

  • Budget Friendly: Sanabul: Essentials V2
  • Best Value For Money: Hayabusa Ultra Lightweight Pearl-weave
  • Best Design: Shogun Fight: Ultra Light ‘Kanji’
  • Best Overall Lightweight Gi: Fuji: Submit Everyone
  • Great for Warmer Climates:  Fuji Summer Weight
  • Best For Competitions: Gold: Ultra Light Weight

Recommended: BJJ Sizing Guide

What is a Lightweight Gi in BJJ?

In the world of BJJ, a lightweight gi often refers to garments in the range of 350 grams per square meter (gsm) or less.

This can vary somewhat depending on factors like personal preferences and styles of training, but generally speaking, a BJJ Gi that is less than 350 gsm is considered a light garment. What sets a lightweight Gi apart from other types of clothing may not be immediately obvious to the naked eye, but it can usually be distinguished by its lower weight when compared to an average BJJ Gi.

While most Gis weigh around 450-550g, a lightweight Gi typically weighs around 30% less–making it suitable for competition and rolling activities where every ounce counts! Whether you’re looking for a new gi for your next tournament or simply want to lighten up your training rig, a lightweight gi is an excellent choice for anyone looking to optimize their performance on the mats.

When to buy A Lightweight Gi

The most common reasons to buy a lightweight gi for BJJ include competition, the heat, and comfort. A lightweight gi will make weight reduction easier for you while also being less hot to wear in hot weather. Most individuals believe that their favorite BJJ gi is made of lighter material. Because they use less cloth, some lightweight gis are often less expensive than regular ones. As a result, a lightwight Gi is normally the best option for jiu-jitsu.

How is the Weight of a BJJ Gi Measured?

When shopping for a new BJJ gi, one of the most important factors to consider is the weight of the fabric. This is typically measured in grams per square meter (gsm), which indicates how much fabric there is in a particular area. Though gsms can vary depending on the type of fabric used and other factors, it generally provides an accurate measure of a gi’s overall weight and density.

In addition to looking at grams per square meter, it’s also important to consider how a gi actually fits. Because different brands use slightly different sizing conventions, a particular size may fit slightly differently from one brand to another. To ensure that you get the best possible fit, it’s important to shop for a gi that’s slim fit or tailor-fit. This will help ensure that your gi doesn’t feel too bulky or loose in any areas. Ultimately, finding the right weight for your BJJ kimono is about striking a balance between durability and comfort, so it’s essential to keep both these factors in mind when making your purchase.

What is the Lightest BJJ Gi?

Of all the BJJ gis on the market today, I believe that the Gold BJJ Ultra Lightweight Aeroweave gi stands out as the lightest. This gi is made from highly durable materials at a lightweight 275gsm and features reinforced patches in high-wear areas. It also has a tailored cut that provides a comfortable fit without restricting movement or impeding your techniques. In addition, this gi features mesh ventilation in high-heat areas on both the interior and exterior of the jacket, allowing for greater breathability and cooling during intense sparring sessions. Ultimately, if you’re looking for a lightweight BJJ gi that delivers superior performance without weighing you down in your training and competition, then look no further than the Gold BJJ Ultra Lightweight Aeroweave gi.

Different Types of Lightweight Gis

Lightweight gis come in two forms: low-cost lightweight gis and high-end lightweight gis. The difference between the two is that the lower-cost one is designed to be less expensive, whereas the higher-quality one is intended to be of a higher quality.

Affordable Lightweight Gis

The less expensive, lighter BJJ gis are of lesser quality and are produced by small BJJ companies. They aren’t horribly bad, but they aren’t perfect either. The manufacturers of cheap lightweight gis don’t attempt to create higher-quality gis because they can save money by using less cloth, which is the funniest thing.

If you’re searching for a low-cost, lightweight BJJ gi that can withstand competition intensity, this isn’t the one. Because it is not particularly robust and can’t handle the energy of a competition, it is not ideal for competition. A more premium BJJ Gi is the finest type of gi for competitions. If you train in hot weather or only twice a week or less, a low-cost lightweight gi will work well for you.

Premium Lightweight Gis

Premium lightweight BJJ gis are highly functional and durable garments that are specifically designed for use in BJJ competitions. These gis offer several key advantages over other types of gis, including improved strength and durability as well as increased flexibility and range of motion. Furthermore, the best BJJ competition gi is always a premium lightweight model, making them ideal for BJJ competitors who are looking for an edge in weight cutting.

For those who train in hot weather conditions, a premium lightweight BJJ gi is an excellent choice. These garments provide added comfort and breathability during intense training sessions, while still offering superior protection against wear and tear or damage from exposure to the elements. And finally, many people believe that a lightweight gi is simply more comfortable and less restrictive than heavier models, making it a great choice for any BJJ enthusiast. Whether you train multiple times per week or just once in a while, a premium lightweight BJJ gi is the perfect choice for anyone who wants to achieve their full potential on the mat.

Best Lightweight Gis for BJJ

1. sanabul: essentials v2.

The first Gi on our list is also the highest rated on Amazon. It is made from a single weave, features tapered sleeves, pant hems, and a rubber collar to ensure protection in essential places. It weighs around 3lbs depending on size. Although not world-renowned, the Sanabul team advocates include coach John Danaher and UFC start ‘Sugar’ Sean O’Malley. The Gi features a few brand logos, which means less stitching and more strength to the uniform overall.

The Gi tends to run big, so sizing is not consistent with other, more popular Gis on the market. I would always recommend getting a larger size and shrinking in the wash. As I have learned over the years, you can make a Gi smaller, but you can never make it bigger. The Gi is extremely affordable and also comes with a free belt of any color. Featured colors include green, grey, and navy alongside the traditional choices.

  • 350 gsm weavest
  • Lightweight and durable
  • Competition Gi

Sanabul Essentials V.2 Ultra Light Gi

2. Hayabusa Ultra Lightweight Pearl-weave

Hayabusa is becoming a larger presence online and on Amazon, particularly with their wide variety of Gi and No-Gi uniforms. This Gi features a reasonably lightweight jacket at 350 gsm (N.B. Heavier jackets tend to run 400-500 gsm) and 8oz ripstop pants (reduces the spread of tears). The Gi runs from 3-4lbs but is reinforced in critical areas, including shoulders, knees, and sleeves.

The Pearl weave is not the cheapest product on the list, but it is quite good-looking and features some favorable reviews to boot. The Gi is pre-washed but not pre-shrunk. This generally results in less color fading, but some customers have reported fading after a couple of washes. As a result, I would advise a black or grey uniform as opposed to navy or white.

  • 350-GSM pearl-weave cotton
  • IBJJF approved
  • 8oz ripstop pants
  • Reinforced lapels, knees, and stress areas for durability
  • Pre-treated to prevent color fade
  • Stretch drawstring

Hayabusa Ultra-Lightweight Pearlweave Jiu Jitsu Gi

3. Shogun Fight: Ultra Light ‘Kanji’

The Kanji features a 350 gsm jacket and ripstop pants to match. Weighing in at around 3.5lbs, the Kanji is a traditional-looking GI and features some very positive reviews from past buyers. Crucially, for durability purposes, the Kanji is reinforced at the shoulder, knees, sleeves, and pant hems. Additionally, the Shogun Fight brand features a strong endorsement from ADCC Champion and current PFL fighter, Vinny Magalhães.

The Kanji is available in some L sizes and potentially H sizes in the future. Although not essential, it is nice to have these options for those who don’t fit the traditional A/F sizing structure. For what it is, the Kanji is reasonably priced. One reservation I would have is the quantity of Shogun Logos featured on the Gi. Not only are they slightly jarring to the traditional white uniform, but they also provide more opportunity for rips and tears to occur. However, this was not highlighted in any of the reviews online.

  • 350gsm pearl weave
  • Ripstop pants
  • Shogun logos

SHOGUN Fight Gi

4. Fuji: Submit Everyone

Regardless of the performance of this one, it certainly has the most enticing name on the list. Fuji’s offering is the first of the ‘premier’ brands on the list. As with Shogun’s Gi, the Fuji features a 350 gsm jacket and ripstop pants. The collar is tapered, and the sleeves and pant hems are also reinforced to provide peace of mind while rolling. There are also overwhelming reports that the Gi feels great, unlike others, which can feel like plastic.

As you would expect, the Fuji comes in L and H sizes. It costs a little more than the others but also comes with the backing of Fuji’s customer support and heaps of good ratings. You can get the Submit Everyone in Black, Blue, or White. Similar to the Shogun Gi, my only concern here is the quantity of Fuji logos. Inevitably,  the more you stitch into the uniform, the more you infringe on its strength.

  • premier brand

FUJI Submit Everyone Gi

5. Fuji Summer Weight

The second entry from Fuji is their Summer Weight Gi. As implied, the Gi is geared towards those in warmer climates and need a reprieve from their heavier uniforms. The Gi weighs around 4lbs and features tapered collars, sleeves, and knees. Like the Zero-G, the Sumer Weight uniform sits around the midpoint of our list in terms of price.

An interesting aspect of the Summer Weight is the elasticated drawstring cord on the pants. Some like it and others don’t. It’s certainly not the norm in BJJ, and preference is probably entirely subjective. Unlike their ‘Submit Everyone’ the Summer Weight has fewer logos, and those featured are away from frictional areas. The Gi is currently only available in black online.

  • IBJJF, NABJJF, UAEJJF Approved
  • Pearl Weave Jacket

6. Gold BJJ: Ultra Light Weight

When it comes to advertising a lightweight Gi, Gold has nailed it. Sitting at the higher end of our price list, the Ultra features a 450 gsm jacket and 10 oz ripstop pants. Overall the Gi weighs around 3lbs, making it one of the lightest on the list. The jacket and pants are reinforced and tapered in all of the key areas. Although not a household name, Gold has received excellent reviews for this model and others.

The Ultra Light Weight comes in traditional Black, Grey, or Navy and, you guessed it, Gold! The Gis are also available in L and H sizing, which is unique for such a new brand. Although I don’t have much experience with the brand, I must say that it could make for an excellent purchase given the weight and reviews of this product.

Who this is for:

Lightweight Gis are for anyone looking for a BJJ gi that can withstand competition intensity without weighing you down. These high-quality gis are particularly useful for those who train in hot weather or compete frequently. If you’re looking for the best BJJ competition gi, then a premium lightweight model is the way to go.

Key Decision-Making Factors

When choosing a lightweight gi, there are several key factors you’ll need to consider in order to find the right one for you. These include the weight of the gi, the weave, the fabric, and the price.

The first factor to consider when choosing a lightweight gi is the weight. As a general rule, the lighter the gi, the better it will be for competition purposes. However, if you’re looking for a gi to use during training sessions, then a heavier gi may be more suitable.

The second factor to consider is the weave of the gi. The most popular type of weave for BJJ gis is the pearl weave. This type of weave is light and strong, making it ideal for competition use.

The third factor to consider is the fabric of the gi. The best BJJ gis are made from a lightweight, breathable fabric that is durable and comfortable.

Finally, you’ll need to consider the price of the gi. Lightweight gis tend to be more expensive than other types of gis due to their high quality construction and materials. However, they are an investment that will pay off in the long run.

Frequently asked questions

What is pearl weave.

‘Weave’ refers to how the fabric in the gi is woven together. The Pearl Weave is the most popular way to do this because it is light and tough.

Judo Gi vs BJJ Gi

A judo gi is typically lighter than a Brazilian Jiu Jitsu gi because it doesn’t have to be as tough. This means that you can get away with using less fabric, which makes it lighter.

However, there are some BJJ gis that are designed to be lightweight, such as the Gold BJJ Ultra Lightweight Aeroweave gi. These gis are just as tough as a regular BJJ gi but don’t weight as much.

What does GSM Stand for in BJJ?

GSM stands for Grams per square meter. This is a way of measuring how heavy a fabric is. This is often used to measure the weight of a gi, because it doesn’t depend on the size of the gi.

Final Thoughts

If you’re looking for the best BJJ gi for competition use, then a premium lightweight model is the way to go. These gis are designed to be lightweight and breathable, while still providing superior protection and durability. When choosing a lightweight gi, be sure to consider the weight, weave, fabric, and price in order to find the right one for you.

Brazilian Jiu Jitsu Gis

If you're just starting to train in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, your first big question is what's the best BJJ Gi ? Don't worry - we've got the best selection of high quality gis to shop. Have a question before purchasing? Send us an email or search through the frequently asked questions below.

The BJJ Gi , also called a Jiu Jitsu kimono, is a traditional martial arts uniform that consists of a jacket, pants, and belt. The Gi has a long history in traditional Japanese martial arts and is the standard uniform for many arts such as karate and Judo. It was originally worn by samurai underneath their armor and throughout the day.

The Brazilian Jiu Jitsu Gi evolved from the Judo Gi, which had a shorter and tighter fitting construction than the traditional samurai Gi and was developed to facilitate the throws and grappling techniques in Judo and Japanese jiu jitsu.

As BJJ began evolving into its own distinct art in the 20th century, so did the Jiu Jitsu kimono. The Judo Gi is excellent for throws, but is still a bit bulky for much of the groundwork in jiujitsu. Thus was born the BJJ Gi, a slimmer, more streamlined version of the traditional martial arts uniform.

Eventually Jiu Jitsu gis were made in other colors besides white, and athletes began putting team patches on their Gi, leading to a distinct look compared to the traditional style of most Judo Gis.

Jiu Jitsu Gi FAQ's

How do i choose a good bjj gi.

The right Gi for your needs varies depending on your comfort, training needs, and time spent training. Beginners should consider a single or double weave gi, while advanced long-term practitioners might consider a premium pearl weave gi.

Durability is an important consideration when choosing a BJJ gi because these uniforms are constantly being tugged on and washed. The weave pattern, fabric weight, and shell material are the key factors in determining durability.

A Jiu Jitsu Gi can vary greatly in terms of comfort and fit. Comfort is based on a few key features including the collar size, sleeve length & cuff tightness as well as overall weight (which will affect how much you sweat). Your Gi should feel free without restricting your movement when you roll.  It should also be durable enough to withstand the rigorous training Brazilian Jiu Jitsu practitioners experience.

Selecting the right BJJ Gi revolves around the following specifications:

  • Proper fit and sizing
  • Gi construction material
  • weave style
  • price/budget
  • color and aesthetics

What Color BJJ Gi Should I Get?

When shopping for your next Jiu Jitsu gi, it’s important to select the right color for your needs. Only white , black, and blue are allowed in IBJJF competition. However, most academies have no restrictions on what colors you can wear during training. We have an amazing jiu jitsu gi collection in all colors such as white, black, blue, navy, gray, army green, etc.

This is ultimately your preference, but there is plenty of room to show off your fashion sense when buying a BJJ Gi .

What If My Gi Doesn't Fit?

If you order the wrong size gi and it doesn't fit, don't worry! As long as you haven't used it, just send it back and exchange it for the proper size. Even if you know your general gi size, we encourage you to always look at the individual gi sizing chart before placing an order.

Will My Gi Shrink?

Most BJJ gis come "pre-shrunk", but you should still be careful while washing to ensure a good fit. Check out our BJJ Gi Care Guide for more gi care tips.

Which BJJ Gi Brands Do You Recommend?

All of the products that you see on our shop have been hand selected from the best brands in the industry . We carry the most trusted brands in the industry, including Tatami , Fuji , Venum , BJJ Religion , Vulkan , Breakpoint , Flow Kimonos , and Scramble .

How Many Gis Should I Own?

This depends on your level of commitment. If you only train a couple of times a week you can possibly get away with owning just one gi. Most active Brazilian jiu jitsu players and competitors own 3-7 that they rotate daily, as you should always wash your gi after each training session.

What Sizes Do BJJ Gis Come In?

BJJ gis come in a wide range of sizes, for adults these sizes range from A0 - A6. The "A" stands for adult, the number represents the size. Womens gis and Kids gis sizing has different naming conventions. The Some manufacturers have "long" or "husky" sizes as well, for example "A2H" would be an A2 with a larger jacket and pant girth, whereas an "A3L" would be an A3 with longer sleeves and pant legs. While most manufactures have very similar sizes we encourage you to double check the gi size chart on each product listing before you order.

Note that the sizes can vary between manufacturers, so be sure to check the specific brand’s sizing chart before purchasing. On a related note, not all Gi sizes will match up perfectly to your build, particularly if you tend to be slimmer and tall, or shorter and stocky.

Do BJJ Gis Include a Belt?

An adult Jiu Jitsu gi includes the jacket and pants only, because the belt is an accessory that is used to signify rank they are normally not included with the gi. BJJ belts are available for purchase on our site too, click here to grab one.

What Material are BJJ Gis Made Of?

Once you know your gi size, the next step is selecting the material. The following are the commonly available weave materials:

  • 100% cotton
  • cotton-polyester-nylon blend
  • bamboo fiber weave

Cotton is the most used gi material. It tends to be the cheapest along with cotton blends.

Although cotton is reliable, it tends to be heavier and less breathable. It can also get stiff and rough over time although higher quality blends and brands will avoid this issue.

Cotton blends incorporate synthetic polyester and nylon with the cotton, resulting in more ‘give’ in the weave, potentially improving wicking, and staying softer for longer.

Higher end gis are sometimes made from a bamboo fiber blend. This material is lightweight, breathable, and often silky on the inside. Although bamboo is technically the ‘best’ Gi material, most bamboo weaves come with a hefty price tag.

Gi Weave Styles

The weave refers to the way the cotton or other fibers are woven together and impacts how heavy, durable, and soft Gi may be.

Additionally, lighter weaves are often more comfortable. However, they can be easier for your opponent to grip. If you intend on competing with the gi these differences are worth consideration.

The following are the most common Jiu Jitsu Gi weave styles:

  • single weave cotton
  • pearl weave
  • double weave
  • ripstop fabric

Single weave cotton is light, inexpensive, and tends to be good for hot weather training due to better wicking and heat dispersion. However, the thin material is easy to tear and will not last long with heavy use.

Pearl weave is the most common weave used in BJJ gis. It is strong and durable and has the appearance of pearl strings woven together. Pearl weaves have a rough exterior but are good all purpose gis at affordable prices.

Gold weave falls between single and double weave in terms of sturdiness and overall weight. It was originally the only weave allowed in competition, but this has since changed.

Double weave is a sturdy combination of two single weaves. As such, they are roughly twice as heavy but much for durable than single weave. While these will last awhile and are hard to grip, they add significant weight and lack breathability.

Ripstop fabric has been around awhile but was recently introduced as a Gi top fabric. It is incredibly lightweight but does not breath well due to the tight weave. Some ripstops are not IBJJF legal, so be sure to check the label before bringing it to competition. Ripstop gis are very durable and lightweight, making them a great travel Gi that will last for years.

BJJ Gi Weights Explained

Although the weave plays a role in the weight of the gi, the weights of different fabric vary greatly even within a single weave style.

BJJ Gi weights are typically listed as GSM (grams per square meter), a measure of the density of the material itself. GSM ranges from 350 on the lighter end all the way to 1000 GSM or greater for heavy duty gis. The GSM should be listed on every gi you buy to know the exact weight.

Ultimately, you will need some time on the mat to decide your preferred weight. Just know that higher GSMs are more durable and harder to grip but are less breathable and add a lot of weight to the overall kimono.

While everyone loves a good lightweight gi for everyday training and competition, they come with their own challenges. Lightweight gis are less durable and heavier ones limit your mobility and make you hotter during training sessions.

Why Are Some Gi's So Expensive?

Your overall budget will determine which Gi selections are available. While you can get a good single weave BJJ gi from $70-90, the more durable pearl or double weaves with ripstop pants are more expensive.

While we recommend starting with a cheaper Gi when starting BJJ, understand durable premium gis will last much longer and may be cheaper to own in the long run.

We also recommend checking out our clearance category for a good high quality gi at discounted prices.

How Often Should I Wash My BJJ Gi?

Your Jiu Jitsu Gi must be washed every time you train, ideally before it fully dries. The mat has bacteria and fungus on it, and you want to make sure your gi gets a good wash after every training session to avoid any skin issues.

Adding a dash of vinegar, baking soda, or other deodorizer to your wash is a good way to add additional protection from the notorious stinky gi syndrome.

Is it safe to travel to France? The latest advice

T he French government has raised its terror alert to the highest possible level, “emergency”, following the terror attack in Moscow that left more than 135 people dead.

French prime minister Gabriel Attal said the decision was taken “in light of the Islamic State’s claiming responsibility for the [Moscow] attack and the threats weighing on our country”.

France’s terror threat system has three levels. The highest level is announced if there is a terrorist attack in France or overseas, or if an attack on French soil is considered to be imminent.

France was already on high alert for potential terrorist attacks, with the Paris Olympics and Paralympics due to take place in the capital this summer.

The updated terror alert comes just days before the UK Easter school holidays, when thousands of British holidaymakers will travel across the Channel for a getaway.

What is the Foreign Office advice for France?

The UK Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO) France advice, which was last updated on February 20, reads: “There is a high threat of terrorist attack globally affecting UK interests and British nationals, including from groups and individuals who view the UK and British nationals as targets. You should remain vigilant at all times.”

“Methods of attack have included knife attacks, shootings, bombings and vehicle attacks. Be vigilant in public places and follow the advice of local French authorities,” the FCDO adds.

The FCDO lists shopping centres, entertainment establishments, cultural events, public transport and places of worship as settings where “indiscriminate” terrorism attacks could take place.

Check the France FCDO page for the latest advice.

What happened in the Moscow terror attack?

On Friday, terrorists carried out an attack at the Crocus City Hall on the outskirts of Moscow, killing at least 137 and injuring 140.

Four men, all of whom are citizens of Tajikistan, have been formally charged with committing a group terrorist attack. The attack has been claimed by the Afghanistan-based Islamic State Khorasan Province (IS-K) group.

On March 7, the United States warned its citizens in Russia that extremists had “imminent plans to target large gatherings in Moscow” and specifically mentioned concert venues. It advised Americans to avoid large gatherings.

What should I do if I get caught up in a terrorist attack?

Britain’s counter-terrorism police gives advice on what to do in the event of an emergency . This includes to run to a place of safety: “This is better than trying to surrender or negotiate.” To hide: “It is better to hide than confront. Barricade yourself in, turn your phone to silent and use only when it is safe to do so.” And to tell: “Make sure you know the local emergency numbers in the country you are travelling to. For all EU countries call 112.”

Have there been recent terrorist attacks in France?

There have been a number of terrorist attacks in France over the past decade. In January 2015, eight cartoonists, two guests and two police officers were murdered at the offices of the satirical magazine Charlie Hebdo . The gunmen identified as belonging to al-Qaeda.

In November that year, in the deadliest terrorist attack in French history, 131 people were killed and 413 were injured in a series of shooting and grenade attacks at the Bataclan music venue, near the Stade de France and at several restaurants and bars across Paris. Islamic State claimed responsibility for the attacks.

In July 2016, 86 people were killed and 434 injured in Nice after a 19-tonne cargo truck was driven into crowds during Bastille Day celebrations on the Promenade des Anglais in Nice. Again Islamic State claimed responsibility.

What if I want to cancel my trip to France?

If you have booked a package holiday to France and want to cancel your trip for any reason, contact your tour operator and they might offer flexibility with alternative dates.

But bear in mind that, because the Foreign Office has not issued any advice against travel to France, there is no guarantee that you will receive a refund, nor will you be able to claim money back with your travel insurance company.

If you have booked flights and accommodation independently, and wish to cancel your holiday, contact your travel providers as soon as possible to see if you can rearrange your plans. Note, however, that given the circumstances, it is unlikely you will receive a full refund.

Comet Fragment Explodes in Dark Skies Over Spain and Portugal

A brilliant flash of blue, green and white on Saturday night came from a shard of an as yet unidentified comet that was moving around 100,000 miles per hour, experts said.

Video player loading

By Robin George Andrews

Robin George Andrews has previously reported on fireball sightings over Northern Europe and Greenland .

On Saturday, revelers across Spain and Portugal ventured into the temperate springtime evening, hoping for a memorable night. None were expecting a visitor from outer space exploding above their heads.

At 11:46 p.m. in Portugal, a fireball streaked across the sky, leaving a smoldering trail of incandescent graffiti in its wake. Footage shared on social media shows jaws dropping as the dark night briefly turns into day, blazing in shades of snowy white, otherworldly green and arctic blue .

Rocky asteroids cause sky-high streaks as they self-destruct in Earth’s atmosphere with some frequency. But over the weekend, the projectile was plunging toward Earth at a remarkable speed — around 100,000 miles per hour, more than twice that expected by a typical asteroid. Experts say it had a strange trajectory, not matching the sort normally taken by nearby space rocks.

That’s because the interloper wasn’t an asteroid. It was a fragment of a comet — an icy object that may have formed at the dawn of the solar system — that lost its battle with our planet’s atmosphere 37 miles above the Atlantic Ocean. None of the object is likely to have made it to the ground, the European Space Agency said.

“It’s an unexpected interplanetary fireworks show,” said Meg Schwamb , a planetary astronomer at Queen’s University Belfast.

It is not rare for comets to create shooting stars. “We have notable meteor showers throughout the year, which are the result of the Earth crossing debris clouds of specific comets,” Dr. Schwamb said. For example, the Perseids , which occur every August, are the result of our world’s sweeping through litter left behind by Comet Swift-Tuttle.

These meteor showers, and the lone shard over the weekend, light up the sky in a similar manner. Air in front of the objects is compressed and heats up, which cooks, erodes, cracks open and obliterates the debris. That destructive process releases light — and, if the projectile is big enough, a powerful shock wave when it surrenders its immense kinetic energy into the sky.

The weekend’s “chunk is likely a bit bigger than a good fraction of the meteors we see during meteor showers, so this just made a bigger light show,” Dr. Schwamb said.

In addition to its flashy performance, the comet fragment’s breakup served as a dry run for experts hoping to defend the planet from large killer asteroids .

One tenet of planetary defense is to find space rocks before they find us; that way, the planet’s protectors can try to do something about them . But the shard over Portugal and Spain was not spied before its demise.

“It would have been great to detect the object prior to colliding with the Earth,” said Juan Luis Cano , a member of the Planetary Defence Office at the European Space Agency.

The worry is that an object just a little larger than Saturday’s missile could again escape detection and explode with lethal effect over an unaware, unwarned city. The meager, 55-foot meteor that exploded above the Russian city of Chelyabinsk in 2013, for example, wasn’t identified before its arrival, either — and its airborne blast, equivalent to nearly 500,000 tons of TNT, caused widespread damage, which injured at least 1,200 people.

But with improved technology on the ground and in space, the hope is that even tiny, harmless objects from around the solar system (like the weekend’s icy visitor, which experts estimate was a few feet across) can be spotted, providing practice for planetary defense researchers searching the heavens for the common but elusive football-field-size rocks that could destroy a city.

Fortunately, a series of next-generation observatories are set to come online in the next few years — including one named after an American astronomer, the Vera C. Rubin Observatory in Chile , which will spot millions of faint and previously undiscovered asteroids .

For now, the spectacle in Spain and Portugal reminds us that Earth is a participant in the solar system’s never-ending game of planetary billiards, and that working to find as many killer space rocks as possible is a task of the utmost importance.

Ukraine war latest: 'Let Ukraine strike back!' - Calls to remove restrictions on use of Western weapons | War latest

Ukrainians gather outside the US embassy in Kyiv as part of mounting demands to remove restrictions on the use of Western weapons. Meanwhile, Volodymyr Zelenskyy warns Moscow is amassing more troops on the border and preparing to intensify its invasion on the second front near Kharkiv.

  • Live reporting by Michael Drummond and (earlier)  Brad Young

Fighting continues along the Kharkiv frontline as Russian forces try to overwhelm defenders.

In an update on Sunday evening, Ukraine's armed forces said its troops were seeking to repel attacks and in places have mounted offensives.

The General Staff said on social media: "The Russian aggressor is trying to use superiority in manpower and equipment and air support.

"Ukrainian soldiers are giving battle to the enemy, and in some directions they themselves are carrying out effective assault actions to improve the stability of the defence and restore positions."

Twelve clashes were reported in the direction of Kharkiv, the update said, as well as near the villages of Lyptsi and Ternova.

"The situation is under control," the statement said.

Ukrainians gathered outside the US embassy in Kyiv as part of mounting demands to remove restrictions on where Ukraine can use Western weapons.

Many NATO countries who provide military aid to Ukraine currently do so on the condition that it is not used to strike targets inside Russia.

The US and Germany in particular have been strict on this issue, likely out of concern about escalation with Moscow.

Other countries - the UK and Sweden, for example - have confirmed or suggested that Ukraine can use their weapons to hit targets across the border.

In Kyiv today, activists held up placards saying "let Ukraine strike back" and "remove the restriction".

The US will participate in Volodymyr Zelenskyy's peace summit next month, an official has said.

It comes after the Ukrainian president called on America's President Joe Biden and China's President Xi Jinping to attend the event.

However the US official did not say who would attend or at what level.

The summit, co-hosted by Switzerland, starts on 15 June and, according to President Zelenskyy, 80 countries have already confirmed their attendance.

Battling against the odds, the Ukrainians say they have become skilled at trying to make every round count.

"Often, with just one, two or three shells, we can completely destroy a target," said Senior Lieutenant Kostiantin, an artillery battery commander with the 57th Brigade.

His troops are fighting against a new Russian invasion into the Kharkiv region, in the northeast of Ukraine.

"We have to keep holding the Russians back… and make every metre of land they try to take cost them hundreds of lives."

Watch this report from our defence and security editor, Deborah Haynes :

Crowds of people marched through the Georgian capital, Tblisi, today to mark the country's Independence Day - and also to protest against the government's divisive "foreign agents" law.

The legislation is seen by some as threatening press and civic freedoms and there are concerns it's modelled on laws used by Vladimir Putin in neighbouring Russia.

Hundreds of people walked through the city on Sunday, as the EU anthem played.

Many held white and red Georgian flags, others the blue and yellow of the EU or the stars and stripes of the US.

There was also a military parade in the city centre as part of the celebrations, attended by Georgia's president and prime minister.

The pair are at odds over the "foreign agents" bill after President Salome Zourabichvili vetoed the bill.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy posted on social media congratulating the Georgian people on their Independence Day.

"Both our nations know all too well that freedom and independence are won rather than granted," he said on X.

"I wish the Georgian people to prosper and strengthen their statehood and ties will all other free nations. I also wish magnificent Georgian culture, identity, and hospitality to multiply over the years."

The parents of a Ukrainian girl who died after a Russian missile strike have bid goodbye to their daughter in emotional scenes at her funeral.

Just five years old, Zlata Rostochil was seriously wounded in an attack at the end of April and later died.

Today, her mother Nadiia and father Vyacheslav knelt beside her body during the memorial service in Odesa.

Other mourners stood solemnly behind them holding candles.

Russian forces are making "maximum efforts" to break through Ukraine's defences, amid fighting on the frontline near Kharkiv.

Kyiv's armed forces said there have been 83 clashes with the enemy on Sunday.

"Ukrainian troops are taking measures to maintain positions and destroy the offensive potential of the enemy," the General Staff said in an update on social media.

It said there were "no major changes" in the direction of Kharkiv but Russian troops continue to mount offensives around Vovchansk city and the village of Lyptsi.

Is National Service a good idea?

Rishi Sunak has talked a lot this week about security in Europe and the need to invest in defence - and then he announced that he would bring back National Service.

Our military analyst Sean Bell broke down the announcement on Sky News earlier...

By John Sparks, international correspondent

If the war in Ukraine was fought in the media alone, the Russians would have been repelled months, or even years, ago.

While the Kremlin funds "debate shows" with far-right nationalists spouting historical theories from the 19th century, the Ukrainians fight their corner with slickly-produced content highlighting every aspect of their defence.

Want to see the Ukrainians blowing up Russian tanks? That will be on X.

The petition to send clapped out cars in London to the Ukrainian military? Head to "Insta".

The passionate address where President Volodymyr Zelenskyy speaks from a burnt-out book-making factory, pleading with Joe Biden and Xi Jinping to turn up at a peace summit?

That dropped this morning.

Read more:

German Chancellor Olaf Scholz has repeated his view that weapons donated to Ukraine should not be used to strike targets inside Russia.

There are "clear rules for German arms deliveries that have been agreed with Ukraine and that work," he said in Berlin earlier, according to Tagesschau television.

"That is my theory anyway," he said, explaining that the aim of his Ukraine policy is to "prevent this from becoming a really big war".

German arms deliveries to Ukraine come with the condition that the weapons not be used on Russian territory - similar to donations by many other NATO countries.

But - as we have discussed on this blog today - there is increasing discussion in the West about whether this is a sustainable policy.

Anton Hofreiter, from the rival Green Party, called at the weekend for Ukraine to be permitted to hit Russian territory with Western weapons.

A potentially habitable Earth-size planet was discovered just 40 light-years away

Gliese 12 b, which orbits a cool, red dwarf star located just 40 light-years away, promises to tell astronomers more about how planets close to their stars retain or lose their atmospheres. In this artist’s concept, Gliese 12 b is shown retaining a thin atmosphere.

A potentially habitable exoplanet that is roughly similar in size to Earth has been found in a system located 40 light-years away, according to a new study.

The planet is about the size of Venus, so slightly smaller than Earth, and may be temperate enough to support life, the researchers said.

Dubbed Gliese 12 b, the planet takes 12.8 days to orbit a star that is 27% of the sun’s size. It’s not yet known whether the exoplanet has an atmosphere.

But the scientists behind the study, published Thursday in the journal Monthly Notices of the Royal Astronomical Society , estimated that Gliese 12 b has a surface temperature of about 107 degrees Fahrenheit (42 degrees Celsius). While hot, that temperature is lower than most of the thousands of exoplanets discovered to date.

“Gliese 12 b could be at the right temperature for liquid water to pool on its surface, and that’s important because we tend to think liquid water is an essential ingredient for life as we know it,” Shishir Dholakia, one of the study’s authors and a doctoral student at the University of Southern Queensland’s Centre for Astrophysics, said in a statement .

The researchers are keen to get a closer look at the exoplanet, including with NASA’s James Webb Space Telescope , which launched into space in 2021 and is equipped with a sophisticated suite of instruments capable of studying exoplanet atmospheres .

The scientists want to determine if the planet has an atmosphere similar to that on Earth, or whether its atmosphere is as extreme and hostile as that on Venus. Alternately, Gliese 12 b could have no atmosphere at all, or one that is unfamiliar and not seen in our own solar system, they said.

The findings could help researchers better understand the factors that make exoplanets potentially habitable. The observations may also shed light on how our own solar system evolved.

“Because Gliese 12 b is between Earth and Venus in temperature, its atmosphere could teach us a lot about the habitability pathways planets take as they develop,” study co-author Larissa Palethorpe, a doctoral student at the University of Edinburgh and University College London, said in a statement .

Gliese 12 b was discovered using data from NASA’s Transiting Exoplanet Survey Satellite , which is designed to stare at a huge patch of the sky for about a month at a time. The space telescope, which launched into space in 2018, looks for periodic changes in brightness of tens of thousands of stars.

If a star dims at regular intervals, it may be a sign that a planet is orbiting the star, passing in front of it and temporarily obscuring its light.

AAA projects busiest Memorial Day weekend travel on record for 2024

lightweight travel gi

EL PASO, Texas (KVIA) -- If you're traveling around this Memorial Day -- whether it be by plane, train, or automobile -- you're going to want to prepare. Experts say it could be the busiest travel for the holiday weekend in nearly 20 years.

AAA is estimating 43.8 million Americans will travel 50 or more miles this weekend. That's up 4% from last year, and nearly matches the record set in 2005 at 44 million.

The amount of drivers on the road this year is expected to hit a record, with a projected 38.4 million people estimated by AAA to travel by car. That's the highest number since the organization began keeping track in 2000, up 4% from last year.

Drivers can expect similar gas prices as last year, when the average cost of a gallon of regular unleaded gas was $3.57, according to AAA.

Airports have been preparing for a spike in travelers this weekend, with AAA projecting that 3.51 million people fly. That's a 4.8% increase from last year.

Friday, the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) set a record for the number of people screen in a single day, hitting 2.9 million, CNN reported .

AAA said several factors affect airfare rates, including destination, number of stops, and fare class.
