Must-Sees - Emirates

Although Dubai's gigantism attracts visitors, the United Arab Emirates , Oman and Qatar are still little-known. However, their skyscrapers and luxury boutiques contrast with a spirited focus on traditions and culture that is worth a detour. Here, we look at the places you must go when travelling to the Emirates.

Discover the treasures of the desert - Oman

Discover the treasures of the desert - Oman

b>Nizwa stands at the edge of the desert, in the middle of an oasis. Its old crenelated fort built in the 17th century sits magnificently opposite the Sultan Qaboos Mosque . The light walls contrast with the surrounding palm groves and overlook a souk where pottery jostles with spices and lamps sit alongside fragrant fruit and vegetable stalls. Travelling east, the Wadi Bani Khalid Oasis provides a dose of coolness with its turquoise lakes and contrasting ochre rocks. Further south, Wahiba Sands stands out for its endless orange dunes.

DSee Dubai differently - United Arab Emirates

See Dubai differently - United Arab Emirates

When people think of Dubai, they often picture Burj Khalifa (the world's tallest skyscraper at 828 metres), or the palm islands (artificial islands in a palm shape). Yet, Dubai also has a historical quarter , Al Bastakiya, which was built in the 19th century. The Al Fahidi Mosque, quiet streets and artisan stores give this city famous for its gigantism an authentic sense of charm. The host city for the 2020 World Expo , Dubai is also having a new and futuristic neighbourhood built: District 2020 . 80% of the infrastructure will then be used to bring this "smart city" with 100,000 inhabitants to life.

Visit a Bedouin village - United Arab Emirates

Visit a Bedouin village - United Arab Emirates

A few kilometres from Dubai, the Al Marmoom Reserve reminds travellers that although nature has been tamed in the cities, it is still running wild in the rest of the country. Covering 10% of the UAE's surface, this reserve is home to 26 reptile species and over 360 bird species, including 300 to 500 greater flamingos. The stop also provides the chance to visit a Bedouin village in the middle of a desert oasis with traditional tents and areas for cooking, farm animals and camels, and to enjoy traditional entertainment.

Wander round Doha - Qatar

Wander round Doha - Qatar

Souq Waqif is one of the liveliest areas in Doha. The stalls stay open late and are packed with specialities like spices, nuts and fresh dates, rare fragrances, jewellery, clothes and various souvenirs. Aromas snake their way out of restaurants, making visitors feel hungry. Tourists, onlookers and sellers come together in these streets, where the atmosphere livens up when rousing traditional music is played by street artists. However, Doha is also about the calm ambiance of the Museum of Islamic Art with its priceless pieces dating from the 7th to the 19th centuries.

Immerse yourself in the culture of Abu Dhabi

Immerse yourself in the culture of Abu Dhabi

It's impossible to mention Abu Dhabi without talking about its huge mosque . With its 82 domes, its 4 minarets standing at over 100 metres tall and its pristine white marble floor, this is one of the most spectacular in the world. It can host 40,000 visitors. Although 200 Abu Dhabi mosques are closed to non-Muslims, Sheikh Zayed Mosque is open. This gives visitors the chance to marvel at its impressive architecture, and at the world's biggest chandelier and carpet! Another visit, another feel altogether. Since 2017, the Louvre Abu Dhabi has been the jewel in the United Arab Emirates' cultural crown. Located in the Saadiyat Island area, which has various prestigious museums, the Louvre Abu Dhabi showcases collections including some borrowed from French institutions. These highlight exchanges and influences between cultures.

See wildlife on Sir Bani Yas - United Arab Emirates

See wildlife on Sir Bani Yas - United Arab Emirates

Considered something of an ecological gem, Sir Bani Yas Island is home to many animals including giraffes, cheetahs, gazelles, ostriches, hyenas and the world's biggest oryx colony. Originally a desert, it was taken on by the Emir of Abu Dhabi, who planted two million trees in a bid to protect endangered species on the Arabian Peninsula and in the United Arab Emirates. Safaris, mountain biking, kayaking and snorkelling: the island offers various activities that enable visitors to explore all its delights.

Mascate - Oman

Muscat - Oman

Sultan Qaboos Grand Mosque, the royal palace, Middle-Age walls, Al Alam Palace and Al Jalali and Al Mirani Forts... Muscat 's recent and older landmarks make it an easy place to visit. The capital of Oman (the smallest and hottest in the world) has a peaceful feel with sea, mountains and desert: very different from Dubai or Abu Dhabi which can be disorientating.

persian gulf cruise dubai

Dos. All travellers visiting Oman, Qatar or the United Arab Emirates must be properly dressed in public. Arms and legs should be covered. However, "dressing up" in the dishdasha and keffiyeh worn by the locals isn't recommended. Don'ts. Religion is a thorny topic here. Criticising Islam, the Emir or the authorities can lead to arrest. The left hand is seen as unclean, so eating with it makes a poor impression.

Unique features

Although Tahitian pearls are famous the world over, those of the Persian Gulf are less well-known. Yet, pearl fishing reached its peak here at the start of the 20th century. Some Bedouin tribes left their oasis in summer: the best time for gathering pearls. In the winter, they returned to tend to their palm groves. Pearl activity almost disappeared in the 40s, but then a Japanese entrepreneur opened a pearl farm in 2005 near Ras Al Khaimah. 40,000 pearls are produced here annually.

Most of the Persian Gulf's dishes are inspired by foreign specialities like Indian biryani (spicy rice with chicken, lamb or fish) and Middle-Eastern shawarma . However, ghouzi is a typical local dish - one usually reserved for evening parties. A lamb or young camel is spit-roasted on a barbecue, having been stuffed with rice, almonds and spices. Travellers do occasionally have the chance to try this dish.

Myths & legends

Legend has it that Sinbad , the famous sailor who completed seven voyages in Arabian Nights , came from Oman. He was apparently born in the city of Sohar, north of Muscat. In Persian times, Omanis were famed for being excellent sailors. The young Sinbad came from a family of fishermen and would have learnt to control the traditional Omani dhow before casting off at sea.

In the spotlight

Qatar lacks drinking water : something it has to manage daily. The solution chosen by the super-rich oil state is to remove the salt from seawater. Four giant hangars have been built 20 kilometres from the capital, Doha, to store almost two million litres of drinkable water. Other similar projects aim to double storage capacity by 2026. However, industry and agriculture continue to draw on groundwater. It is estimated that 100 million cubic metres are pumped each year underground.

Books. In City of Stars , the Emirati author Sala Galadari immerses the reader in 12th-century Najmia. In this fictitious Middle-Eastern town, we follow Ameera Hussain: a young woman from a privileged background. Her life is torn apart when she learns a family secret that plunges her into the war raging in the neighbouring town.

Facts and figures

27% . This is the GDP share representing activities linked to oil and hydrocarbons in the United Arab Emirates. Aware that fossil fuel production could slow in the coming years, the Emiratis are increasingly focusing on services (business, tourism and finance) which have risen to make up 40% of the GDP.

Don't worry about communication in the Arabian Gulf: English is widely spoken and understood in this multicultural part of the world.

In the Arabian Gulf, you'll find the most luxurious restaurants and the most exclusive boutiques, but there are also plenty of cheaper eateries and shopping options for smaller budgets.

In the winter, temperatures are mild, but during other parts of the year, you'll soon notice you need to spend most of your time indoors to beat the heat.

CUISINE STEP INTO SPICE WORLD

The Gulf States offer a wide choice in restaurants serving the varied cuisine of the communities that call this region home. From the simplest of eateries or the most luxurious dining temples, one thing remains constant: a love of warming spices like cardamom, cumin, cinnamon and za'atar that defines the flavor of Middle Eastern food.

Arabian Spicy Lamb Pilaf

BITE INTO BIRYANI

You might be familiar with biryani from your favorite Indian restaurant, but this popular dish of rice, spices, meat and vegetables is a Middle Eastern staple, too. Versions from the Arabian Gulf often add distinctive yogurt and dried fruit to the mix and feature lamb (often in the form of meatballs) alongside shredded chicken.

Middle East, Traditional Hummus and Eggplant

A MIX OF MEZZE

Mezze are small plates popular throughout the southern Mediterranean and the Middle East, and you can find them at cafes, bars and restaurants throughout the region. Try traditional hummus made with spicy local olive oil and fresh chickpeas. Sample kibbeh, fritters of finely ground meat, bulgur wheat and spices served with quince paste or yogurt sauce.

Arabic Traditional Chicken and Rice Dish

ROCK THE KABSA

Look out for authentic Emirati or Qatari restaurants serving up the traditional dish kabsa. This much-loved recipe features cuts of whole chicken stewed for hours in tomato puree with nutmeg, cinnamon and other spices, with raisins for some added sweetness — all served over fragrant rice, of course.

Excursions included

Let yourself be distracted, accept the improbable and respect the frivolity – like in the tales from the Arabian Nights . This is the attitude to adopt during this outstanding 8-day cruise aboard Le Bougainville. Escape into the surprising history of Arabia, an arid peninsula that has been tamed by construction, along the southern coast of the Persian Gulf, the new Arab cities that feature the desert as their backdrop.

Throughout your journey, you will benefit from an excursion included per person per port of call, chosen with care by PONANT. During this cruise, visit the surprising Ithra Cultural Centre in Dammam, discover the Museum of Islamic Art and the Souq Waqif in Doha, or enjoy taking in the works of art at the Louvre Abu Dhabi Museum. The diversity of experiences on offer promises you intense and varied moments (to discover the full range of excursions, go to the itinerary tab).

In this region of the world, ancient cities rub shoulders with the futuristic towns designed and shaped by the greatest contemporary architects. Dubai and its skyscrapers that are among the tallest in the world; Abu Dhabi with its Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque and its new Louvre Museum; Doha and its bay offering a panorama of its fascinating skyline: each location offers a breath-taking experience. You will discover the capital of Bahrain, Manama, which while less famous is no less exciting. As a crossroads for trade routes since ancient times, today it is also more avant-garde than its Emirate sisters. The colourful souk and the Bahrain National Museum are among its must-see sites.

For the first time, you will have the opportunity to explore the Saudi city of Dammam . This modern metropolis is renowned for its pleasant waterfront and white sandy beaches; above all, though, it is the gateway to the Al Hasa oasis, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. In the endless desert, imagine the largest oasis in the world, its fragrant gardens crossed by canals, springs and palm trees… palm trees as far as the eye can see. The Near East exudes an incredible poetry.

Ports of Call & Excursions

Dubai

2 January 2025 - Dubai

Embarkation 2/1/2025 From 4:00 pm to 5:00 pm Departure 2/1/2025 at 6:00 pm

Vertiginous, excessive, immoderate… Dubai , the largest city in the United Arab Emirates, stands out for its architectural follies. Home to the world’s tallest skyscraper, the Burj Khalifa , with a total height of 828 metres, almost three times that of the Eiffel Tower, the city is also famous for the gigantic scale of the Palm Islands, its artificial islands in the form of a palm tree. You can explore more traditional districts not far away, with visits of the souks of Deira or the Gold Souk. Or perhaps you would prefer to discover Dubai Museum: located in an 18 th -century fort, it tells the city’s history from Antiquity to the present day.

At sea

3 January 2025 - At sea

Arrival 3/1/2025 Departure 3/1/2025

During your journey at sea, make the most of the many services and activities on board. Treat yourself to a moment of relaxation in the spa or stay in shape in the fitness centre. Depending on the season, let yourself be tempted by the swimming pool or a spot of sunbathing. This journey without a port of call will also be an opportunity to enjoy the conferences or shows proposed on board, depending on the activities offered, or to do some shopping in the boutique or to meet the PONANT photographers in their dedicated space. As for lovers of the open sea, they will be able to visit the ship’s upper deck to admire the spectacle of the waves and perhaps be lucky enough to observe marine species. A truly enchanted interlude, combining comfort, rest and entertainment.

Dammam

4 January 2025 - Dammam

Arrival 4/1/2025 early morning Departure 4/1/2025 late evening

On the Saudi shores of the Persian Gulf , Dammam reveals its winding coastline, home to fine-sand beaches and pleasant seafront. The capital of the Eastern Province of Ash-Sharqiyah boasts a prime position along the calm waters of the Arabian Gulf. Edged with rows of palm trees facing the sea, this modern city is also the gateway to the beautiful Al-Ahsa Oasis. Take an optional excursion into the world’s largest oasis to see verdant gardens planted with countless palm trees, a sophisticated irrigation system, and archaeological sites attesting to human presence since the Neolithic period. The extraordinary landscape is listed as World Heritage by UNESCO .

Manama

5 January 2025 - Manama

Arrival 5/1/2025 early morning Departure 5/1/2025 evening

At the crossroads of trade routes since ancient times, Manama , the capital of Bahrain , still bears traces of what were, for centuries, the pillars of the economy in the Persian Gulf: pearl harvesting, and the construction of traditional sailing vessels called dhows . But the major draw of this small island in Bahrain is undeniably the vestiges of human presence dating back nearly 5,000 years. The ancient harbour and capital of Dilmun, Qal'at al-Bahrain , is, along with the Dilmun Burial Mounds scattered across the island, an essential relic of this Mesopotamian civilisation. Both are listed as UNESCO World Heritage . Ancient colonisations would come later, by the Assyrians, the Achaemenids, the Macedonians, then the Arabs in the Middle Ages, before the more contemporary invasions by the Portuguese, the Persians and the Ottomans. This tumultuous history now gives this small territory rich influences.

Doha

6 January 2025   7 January 2025 - Doha

Arrival 6/1/2025 early morning Departure 7/1/2025 early afternoon

On the banks of the Persian Gulf, discover Doha , the capital of Qatar . Rising out of the desert, the city has managed to maintain its traditions in spite of a frantic race for modernity. The cliff bordering Doha Bay has magnificent views over the city centre’s enormous constructions. The silhouette of the Museum of Islamic Art rises up near the quays, where the region’s typical sailboats, known as dhows , are docked. This “fortress”, designed by Ming Pei , the architect of the Louvre pyramid, is home to the finest collections of Islamic art in the world. Not far, the lively district of Souq Waqif and its colourful stalls are also an unmissable visit.

Abu Dhabi

8 January 2025 - Abu Dhabi

Arrival 8/1/2025 early morning Departure 8/1/2025 evening

The political capital of the United Arab Emirates, Abu Dhabi stands out thanks to its exceptional cultural offering. In the Saadiyat Island district, the Louvre Abu Dhabi , designed by Jean Nouvel as a museum town inspired by traditional Arab architecture, creates a dialogue between objects and works from civilisations from all over the world around the great universal questions. A little further, the Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque boasts a sumptuous decor of marble, gold and glass. Abu Dhabi is also the gateway to the Al Ain oasis and its 150,000 date palms, a remarkable testimony to the settling of nomads in the region since Neolithic times, and a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Then, stop by the “ I LOVE Khobar ” sign on the Al Khobar waterfront and enjoy the fresh sea breeze before returning to the pier.

  • This tour involves 1.24 miles (2 km) of walking. Women should wear a long dress or long trousers and a long-sleeved top (no tight clothing), not low in neckline; men should not wear shorts at all, but long trousers and a short-sleeved shirt or a tee-shirt. Cultural heritage of Bahrain

AdobeStock_244120882.jpeg

Discover Bahrain's rich cultural history on this half-day tour.

Your first visit will take you to the city of Muharraq, the former capital of Bahrain, known for its cultural contributions through the many restored traditional Bahraini houses that can be found amidst the narrow lanes and byways.  You will visit the recently renovated Shaikh Ebrahim Bin Mohammed Al Khalifa Centre , a cultural landmark featuring the Kurar House, dedicated to the time-honoured craft of gold embroidery and the Iqra Children’s Library. You will make a photo stop at the House of Sheikh Isa bin Ali Al Khalifa . It was not only the Sheikh’s residence, but also the seat of his government (the monument is currently under renovation).

You will then visit the Bin Matar House (a pearling merchant’s house), which is one of the Old Houses.

Meet a Bahraini chef in the Coffee House, and experience the local food he prepares. As you may know, Bahrain was once known as a cultural centre of the ancient Dilmun civilization. Its strategic location has led to a mixing of several cultures together, including Persian, Sumerian, Assyrian, Babylonian, Portuguese, Arab, and British. All these influences can be experienced firsthand in Bahraini cuisine. Many of the local dishes found around the island of Bahrain are inspired by these cultures, giving its visitors the unique opportunity to experience different flavours all in one country. The traditional food of Bahrain includes fish, meat, rice, and dates. Machboos is one of its most famous dishes.  It consists of meat or fish and rice.

You tour will continue at the Bahrain National Museum , whose collection includes a relocated burial mound from 2800 B.C., artefacts from the Dilmun era, as well as 19th- and 20th-century exhibits related to the pearl trade.

You will then return to the ship.

  • This tour involves 2.5 miles (4 km) of walking. We recommend you wear comfortable walking shoes and protect yourself from the sun.

Manama, capital of Bahrain

AdobeStock_148861241.jpeg

Take a day to discover some of Bahrain's best cultural gems, from the most modern to the oldest. You tour begins with a travel back in time to the Bahrain Fort , a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Excavations carried out since the 1950s have revealed distinct strata dating back to around 2300 B.C.

You will proceed to the Bahrain International Circuit . Having cost some US$180 million to build, the state-of-the-art racing track boasts unparalleled features that place it among the world's best Formula 1 venues. You will visit both the VIP tower, for all-round views of the circuit, and the media centre, once the largest in the world. And, if the circuit is not being used for an event, you'll even get to see the F1 control room - the place where key decisions are made during a race.

You will then visit the Bahrain National Museum , which houses a burial mound from about 2800 B.C.

After a traditional Bahraini lunch at Muharraq, the former capital of Bahrain, you will make a photo stop at the Grand Al-Fateh Mosque , which can accommodate over 7,000 worshippers. The impressive building is crowned by the world's largest fibreglass dome.

Before heading back to the ship, continue with a stop at the maze-like Manama's Souq , with its plethora of items.

  • This tour involves about 1.3 mi (over 2 km) of walking, with some steps in each visit. We recommend you wear comfortable walking shoes and protect yourself from the sun. Lunch is included with your tour (no alcohol served). In the mosque, the dress code needs to be followed very strictly.  Pre-booking is required to participate in this tour.

The Bahrain Fort & Al Fateh Grand Mosque

AdobeStock_244120893.jpeg

This half-day will take you to some of the key attractions in Manama, the capital of this island nation of Bahrain.

You’ll be heading for the Al-Fateh Grand Mosque , which is one of the world’s largest mosques. Blending a variety of architectural styles typical of the Middle East, the huge, modern edifice boasts the largest fibreglass dome on the planet, can accommodate 7,000 worshippers at one time and also houses the National Library of Bahrain.

Next, we will head out to make a photo stop of Bahrain World Trade Centre - the Financial Harbour and the city’s glitzy shopping malls. Designed by the multi-national architectural firm Atkins, this 240-metre-high twin tower complex is the first skyscraper in the world to integrate wind turbines into its design.

You will continue your visit at Bahrain Fort . The Fort is nearly 12 kilometres from the city of Manama and is situated at Karbabad.

The Portuguese built the Fort in 1522 on the ruins of an earlier, smaller fort built by the people of Bahrain. The Portuguese added high walls, huge square towers and a surrounding moat, which is still visible to visitors. The Bahrain Fort occupies a strategic military position where seafaring navigation could be monitored. Excavations have revealed ancient soldier's barracks, horse stables, an ammunition depot, a secret passageway, ceramic utensils and Islamic and Chinese coins.

You will then return to your ship.

  • This tour involves a half-mile (800 metres) of walking with some steps. We recommend you wear comfortable walking shoes and protect yourself from the sun. In the mosque, the dress code needs to be followed very strictly women should have scarves covering their hair, a long dress and a long sleeve top (no tight clothing), not low in neckline, men shouldn't wear shorts at all, but long pants and a full sleeves shirt.

Discover Doha

Discover Doha

Let yourself be seduced by the sumptuous cityscape and treasures of Doha on a panoramic tour of the Qatari capital.

Rising out of the desert, Doha blends the ultramodern and the traditional with its futuristic skyscrapers and bustling historic centre. Vibrant and cosmopolitan, it offers a rich cultural experience, from avant-garde museums to man-made landscapes.

After taking in the panoramic views of the Emirati cityscape and watching the camel parade that takes place every morning and afternoon on the lawn in front of the Amiri Diwan, you continue your tour among the towers of West Bay. Here, history seems to meet the future in a constantly changing setting. Then admire Qatar's most prestigious addresses at Pearl Qatar . On this artificial archipelago, stretching over nearly four million square metres of reclaimed land, the different islands have been divided into ten districts with a distinct architectural style and theme. Take a photo stop at the Porto Arabia promenade overlooking the marina.

Finally, visit the Qatar National Museum . This museum tells the unique story of Qatar and its people, from the earliest times to the present day, and also looks to the future. Designed by French architect Jean Nouvel, who drew inspiration from the local sand rose, its architecture symbolically evokes the desert, its silence and its eternal dimension, but also the spirit of modernity and boldness that shook what seemed unshakeable at the time. The museum occupies an impressive 40,000 square metres. The exhibitions highlight historical objects and contemporary influences, opening up a dialogue on the impact of this rapid change.

  • This tour involves 1.5 km (less than a mile) of walking on flat ground. We recommend wearing comfortable walking shoes and sun protection. While no dress code is imposed, we suggest dressing modestly (covering knees and shoulders). The parade of camels may be cancelled without prior notice by the local authorities. On Fridays, this tour can only take place after 3.00 pm.

Museum of Islamic Art & Souq Waqif

Museum of Islamic Art & Souq Waqif

Pei, the famous Chinese-American architect involved in the construction of the glass pyramid at the Louvre Museum in Paris. The museum contains many artefacts (metal works, ceramics, textiles, manuscripts and paintings) from the 7th- to the 19th-century, which were used in various countries, such as China, India, Spain, Syria, etc. Four floors are dedicated to permanent and temporary exhibitions.

After enjoying approximately 25 miles (40 kilometres) of trekking by 4X4 into the Inland Sea you will reach for your ship.

Louvre Abu Dhabi

From the pier, board your coach for a short drive to the Louvre Abu Dhabi Museum , the largest art museum on the Arabian Peninsula.

Located on the new built Saadiyat Island (literally “Island of Happiness”), this museum opened in 2017, with the ambition to display the works of historical, cultural and sociological significance from ancient times to the contemporary era.

This masterpiece building was designed by the French architect M. Jean Nouvel and has been inspired by cultural elements of the UAE. A falaj-inspired water system runs through the museum, under a dome of 180 meters of diameter of galleries, leaving the impression of a floating structure. The web-patterned roof allows the sun to filter through, resulting in an enchanting play of light of 7 850 “stars”.

The permanent gallery showcases art on loan from different French museums, including the musée du Louvre, the Centre Georges Pompidou or the musée d’Orsay in Paris. Art from the Middle East will also be shown within the museum, in order to set up a dialogue between people, and Eastern and Western art.

After your visit, you will enjoy some free time. You will then return to the ship.

  • The visit to the Louvre takes a maximum of 60 minutes. You will find sofas to sit on inside the museum if necessary. We recommend that you wear comfortable walking shoes. The museum is closed on Mondays. Pre-booking is required to participate in this tour.

Qsar Al Watan & observation deck

From the pier, board your coach for the 30-minute drive to Qasr Al Watan , the United Arab Emirates presidential palace.

You will visit this unique landmark in the country offering the world first-of-its-kind insight into the Arab heritage and the governing principles that shaped the history of the United Arab Emirates and its vision to the future. The palace offers you a unique opportunity to marvel at majestic hallways, explore exhibitions that celebrate the region’s rich Arabic heritage and learn more about the rulers and governing institutions that shaped the nation.

After the visit, proceed to the Observation Deck at 300 in the Conrad Etihad Towers. Located on level 74, it is the highest vantage point in Abu Dhabi. Soak up uninterrupted, bird’s-eye views 300 metres above the UAE capital and capture impressive photos of the city skyline, corniche and the Arabian Gulf.

  • This tour involves little walking on flat grounds, with some steps. We suggest you wear conventional clothing (jeans, t-shirts or shorts are not permitted). Qsar Al Watan is a working Palace that hosts official ceremonies which justifies closures to visitors without prior notice. The Observation Deck may be closed if any private events are confirmed on short notice. Hotel Conrad Etihad Towers have only 2 elevators with access to the Observation Deck, and hence you can expect a short waiting period when going up or coming down. Pre-booking is required to participate in this tour.

Dubai / UAE

Dubai   is the largest and most populous cityin the United Arab Emirates (UAE). On the southeast coast of the Persian Gulf, it is the capital of the Emirate of Dubai, one of the seven emirates that make up the country.

Dubai is a global city and business hub of the Middle East. It is also a major global transport hub for passengers and cargo. Oil revenue helped accelerate the development of the city, which was already a major mercantile hub, but Dubai's oil reserves are limited and production levels are low: today, less than 5% of the emirate's revenue comes from oil. A growing centre for regional and international trade since the early 20th century, Dubai's economy today relies on revenues from trade, tourism, aviation, real estate, and financial services.

Dubai has attracted world attention through large construction projects and sports events, in particular the world's tallest building, the Burj Khalifa. As of 2012, Dubai was the most expensive city in the Middle East. In 2014, Dubai's hotel rooms were rated as the second most expensive in the world.

Abu Dhabi / UAE

Abu Dhabi  is the capital and the second most populous city of the United Arab Emirates (the most populous being Dubai), and also capital of the Emirate of Abu Dhabi, the largest of the UAE's seven emirates. Abu Dhabi lies on a T-shaped island jutting into the Persian Gulf from the central western coast. The city of Abu Dhabi has an estimated population of 1.8 million in 2016.

Abu Dhabi houses federal government offices, is the seat of the United Arab Emirates Government, home to the Abu Dhabi Emiri Family and the President of the UAE, who is from this family. Abu Dhabi's rapid development and urbanisation, coupled with the relatively high average income of its population, has transformed the city into a large and advanced metropolis. Today the city is the country's centre of political and industrial activities, and a major cultural and commercial centre, due to its position as the capital. Abu Dhabi accounts for about two-thirds of the roughly $400-billion United Arab Emirates economy.

Glimmering Towers Of Asia - Dubai to Singapore

Glimmering Towers Of Asia - Dubai to Singapore

A lot of cruises passing through here are world voyages which will typically pass through in March or April, however some cruise lines will base ships in the region for a season, sailing out of Dubai typically. Longer, repositioning cruises may pass through the Suez Canal, a timeless journey through the heart of Egypt.

A cruise to the Red Sea will visit ports such as Safaga for the chance to explore ancient Luxor, Eilat, Israel's southernmost city and Aqaba for the chance to visit stunning Petra.

Usually 7 days in duration, Persian Gulf cruises will set out from Dubai to visit some of the major ports of the Emirates and Oman such as Muscat, Abu Dhabi, Khasab and Fujairah.
