If there was a rating below a 1, I would give it. My wife booked a tour through Sunrise to Canada. She was with a group of 13 travelers. They went to airport to begin the first leg. Air Canada did not show up. After some phone calls the group was advised to come the next day. Again, Air Canada did not have the flight meeting in Canada which would allow the group to join the tour already in progress. So, the group went home again with no way of joining the tour. My wife had purchased insurance through AIG. After many phone calls and letters, AIG did reimburse some of the funds. After many phone calls and letters, Air Canada did reimburse some of the funds. Sunrise reimbursed nothing, saying, the group was just out of luck. My wife is out $1700.00. I am assuming the other 13 members of the group are also out $1700.00. Why should Sunrise keep $22,100 for not giving satisfactory service?

Sunrise Tours did not "keep" the money. Monies paid to the hotels, restaurants, guides, local transportation, etc. included in the tour package were prepaid and non-refundable. Travelers were not told they were "out of luck." After two canceled flights to Nova Scotia, travelers decided to forego trying a third time and subsequently made travel insurance claims for the losses incurred in missing the trip. Air Canada and Sunrise Tours refunded monies to travelers, and those that purchased travel insurance were reimbursed per the terms of that insurance. The reviewer is grossly misrepresenting this unfortunate scenario.

They advertised a trip for a certain price with airfare included. After my group of 9 people paid our deposits and signed a contract, Sunrise came back and said oops, we made a mistake. The trip will be another $3500 per person. Now, they continued to advertise the same trip we booked at the same price we agreed to for 1 week after we were contacted. This is fraud, plain and simple. Rather than own up to their "mistake", they cancelled my group and refunded our deposits. Sunrise refused to honor the price they had contacted with us. I will book the trip with another agency and would never recommend Sunrise to anyone.

My elderly parents had booked and paid in full for an upcoming tour. Sunrise tours canceled the tour and didn't even contact them to let them know. When they called to inquire, they were told that the letter they sent was returned to them. They then offered a 50% refund on a tour that was canceled by the tour company. The tour was to be in April, 2020, in the midst of the Corona virus . When asked why it wasn't a full refund they said that they were out "a lot of money, for prepaying much of the tour". When asked for itemization for the money they were out they just said that they didn't want to get into that. They tout customer-service first, but keeping 1/2 of the money paid for a tour they canceled isn't right.

I love Sunrise Tours. I've taken two trips with them so far and plan to take a third this year. I think the best thing about Sunrise is their attention to detail followed by their customer service. Each time I've traveled, the tour guide has called a day or two in advance to see if I had questions. Each trip was trouble-free, I just sat back and enjoyed. The price is all-inclusive, unless otherwise noted, so it's a good value when you price it out. I like that they offer day trips, weekend getaways and major trips...a good mix. The people on my trips were a good mix, too. Keep up the great work!

I've been on several Sunrise Tours. They are a fantastic company who care about their travelers. They manage every detail and just make your trip relaxing and fun. I would highly recommend them.

Ok so we were going for the weekend to St. Louis from Chicago for a Blackhawks game and we were suppose to ride on the poleman train there and back but then right as about the whole 200 people were about to go on this really nice train, last minute they cancel the train and send us on buses.... Also everyone had been waiting for this event since December!!!! Nice job....

Haleakala Volcano, which fittingly translates to House of the Sun, is an amazing and awe-inspiring place to watch the sunrise. Head up to the summit of Haleakala in the dark and wait for the first break of sun to light up the crater. Valley Isle Excursions Sunrise Tour

We had the opportunity to experience sunrise with Valley Isle Excursions , and it was a pretty epic morning. Dare we say, worth the 2:30 am wake up. 

We were picked up very early and driven up with 16-ish new friends. Thankfully, our guide knew we wanted to continue sleeping so he kept things quiet and we were able to sneak in another hour of sleep as we went up the mountain. As soon as we reached the entrance, we woke up excited! 

We made it to the summit visitors center approximately an hour before sunrise. While this felt very early, I was happy to be there so early as we were able to get a great front row spot. 

After the stunning sunrise and chant, we headed back to the van. We made one additional stop in the park before heading down the hill. We drove through upcountry Maui to breakfast at the Mill House in central Maui.

Skyline Hawaii

Gear up for an early morning tour with Skyline Hawaii ! Before we get into the tour details, you should know that this company is committed to conservation. Since 2002 they have planted over 20,000 trees and have given over $1.8 million to environmental and community nonprofits. So this is a company you can feel good about supporting. 

Their tour begins with an early morning pickup from your hotel or resort. They provide jackets for the sunrise viewing (though wear warm layers and socks…trust us!). After sunrise you’ll get an informative driving tour to learn about the history of Haleakala, the flora and fauna, and more. Breakfast is at Kula Lodge in upcountry Maui, and then you’ll be back to your hotel with the rest of the day ahead of you! 

Polynesian Adventures

One of the largest and most trusted tour operators in Hawaii also offers a great Haleakala sunrise tour . Like the other tours, you’ll be picked up from your hotel or resort very early in the morning. The tour bus will take you up the hill (feel free to nap!) and you’ll arrive at the summit visitors center with plenty of time to spare. Once you watch the spectacular sunrise, you’ll be escorted back down the mountain while your guide entertains and educates you. Honestly on all of these tours you’ll learn a lot about Hawaiian history. 

You’ll drive through upcountry to reach a local favorite spot, Kula Lodge, where you get impressive views of Maui as you eat breakfast. After breakfast you’ll enjoy the remainder of the drive back to your hotel or vacation rental. 

Haleakala Eco Tours

Take a drive with Haleakala Eco-Tours. They take care of everything. After pickup from your hotel or vacation rental, they whisk you up the mountain in their 24 passenger van. You’ll arrive in plenty of time to watch the sunrise and listen to the sunrise chant. 

After the tour, you have time to visit the Haleakala Visitors Center before you head out of the park. On your way down, your guide will talk story and give you the history of the volcano and ancient Hawaii. As you drive, you’ll get to see the towns of Kula, Makawao, and Haiku. 

Breakfast is in the north shore town of Paia (currently at Island Fresh Cafe). After that, you’ll continue the drive back to your hotel or vacation rental so you can enjoy the rest of your day!

Haleakala Sunrise Tour FAQs:

Can you see the haleakala sunrise on your own.

You sure can! But there are some things to know before you do. First, you’ll need a reservation. These reservations are available through the National Park Service and are only $1, but they do sell out quickly. So plan ahead and set your alarm to buy!

You’ll also need to pay the entrance fee upon arrival to Haleakala National Park . The current entrance fee is $30 per vehicle. 

There are no streetlights in the national park and the drive up the mountain is winding. Take care and drive slowly. And be sure to give yourself more than enough time to get there. You’ll want to arrive to your viewing point at least 30 minutes before sunrise, if not before. There will likely be a wait at the park entrance and you’ll want to take parts of the drive slowly, so factor that into your drive time estimates.

If you don’t want to do a tour but also the prospect of driving up this dormant volcano at 3 am isn’t exciting, you might want to consider heading to Haleakala for sunset . 

Is a Haleakala sunrise tour worth it?

In our opinion, a tour was 100% worth it. We’ve visited Haleakala many times, but heading up for sunrise is another experience. We needed to leave our house at 3 am and being able to sleep on the drive up was such a luxury. Also, not being stressed about driving in the dark or getting there on time was a huge perk. 

And there were other parts of the tour that made the whole experience worth it. We loved our tour guide and though we know a good amount about the history of Maui and Haleakala (it’s our job), we learned so much new, great information. And having the extra warm parkas to help keep us warm as we were waiting for the sunrise was hugely helpful. Those extra layers were important! 

What to expect on a Haleakala sunrise tour?

All good tours will provide the same basic things:

• Transportation from your hotel or vacation rental
• A sunrise tour reservation
• Entrance to Haleakala National Park for sunrise
• A knowledgeable guide

Make sure you dress warmly (layers are your friend!) because it is unbelievably cold atop Haleakala before the sun comes up. 

What is the best place to watch the sunrise on Haleakala?

There are a few places to enjoy the sunrise, but we really enjoy watching it from the Haleakala Summit Visitors Center, which is 9,740 feet above sea level. It is closed, but standing outside of it you can get a view of Haleakala Crater which is magical as the sun rises. Don’t go to the headquarters visitors center, which is only at 7,000 feet elevation and doesn’t provide any sort of a sunrise view.

View the Sunrise from the Top of the World What better place to see the sunrise over Maui than from Haleakalā, Maui’s highest peak and a top visitor attraction. 

SCHEDULE (times vary depending on sunrise times throughout the year)

2:00 AM - 3:00 AM: Pickup at your hotel or accommodation. 

6:00 AM - 10:00 AM: Experience the classic sunrise from the summit of Haleakalā National Park, followed by a full breakfast at the Maui Tropical Plantation at Café O'Lei, included with your tour.

11:00 AM - 12:00 PM: Return to your hotel or accommodation.

The tour is ADA accessible and the walk to the summit from the parking lot is short. However, if you’re interested in viewing the sunrise from an even higher point, there is a small hike up some stairs and over rocks.

CLOTHING: Cozy jackets will be provided when you arrive at Skyline. We recommend you dress in warm layers and wear pants, a jacket or sweatshirt, socks, and closed-toe shoes so you are warm enough while viewing the sunrise. Temperatures at the summit of Haleakalā are routinely in the 30s and 40s.  CAMERA/CELLPHONE CAMERA: You will definitely want to capture the beauty of the sunrise on the top of Haleakalā, so bring your camera! WHAT ELSE TO BRING: A reusable water bottle and sunglasses. INTERPRETIVE APP: Download Skyline Hawaii's Haleakalā National Park Interpretive App from the App Store or Google Play Store. It’s available in nine languages (Hawaiian, Japanese, Mandarin, Korean, German, French, Spanish, Portuguese, and English) and has great info to augment what you’ll hear from your tour guide!

WEATHER & REFUNDS: Weather at the summit can vary widely, and inclement weather can impact or limit sunrise views. Every sunrise atop Haleakalā is a unique, one of a kind experience. Some mornings are clear, while some are clouded in. Unfortunately, we cannot provide refunds based on inclement, cloudy, or rainy conditions at the summit as they are outside of Skyline Hawaii’s control. But, we hope any visit to Haleakalā National Park and the summit of this legendary volcano are experiences guests will remember and revere as generations have before - even under adverse weather conditions. CAR SEAT REGULATIONS: Hawaii’s Child Passenger Restraint Law requires children under 4 years of age to ride in a child safety seat. WHAT HAPPENS IF IT RAINS?  Tours operate rain or shine. If we do cancel, we'll make every effort to contact you in advance to reschedule or refund the tour.   WHAT IS THE CANCELLATION POLICY? Our Hassle-Free Cancellation Policy guarantees that you receive a 100% refund for any tour cancelled at least 48 hours in advance of your tour time. For cancellations or changes made within 48 hours of your tour, refunds will only be provided if we are able to resell the spots on your tour.  IS THERE CELL SERVICE AT THE SUMMIT?   There is some cell phone reception throughout the park and at the summit, but it can be spotty.    Hours 7:00 AM - 3:00 PM (every day)

I loved Travis' passion for his home and how much pride he took in giving the tour and showing us all a wonderful time. The views were absolutely breathtaking. It was an experience that I will honestly never, ever forget.

We found this tour to be much better than driving the Hana journey ourselves. The guide, Paula, was knowledgeable and the lunch was delicious. I appreciated her sharing the details on how to drive safely. The van was just the right size, 12 passengers. The chosen stops were spot on. The turtle siting was a nice surprise and the spectacular sunset capped off a wonderful day.

We did the Road to Hana tour with tour guide Yvonne and it was absolutely incredible!! Yvonne was so knowledgeable about the native plants, animals, and local culture. It was really terrific to be able to be guided by a true Hawaiian who has so many fun and interesting stories to share along the way. We stopped at Uncle Harry’s tacos and they were truly the best tacos I’ve had in my life.
