Mexico City Food Tour: Chilango Tacos 101

Tacos are the lifeblood of Mexico City, and locals—known as “chilangos”—eat them day and night. On this tour, we’ll teach you the basics of the local taco scene as we walk through Mexico City’s hip Condesa and Roma neighborhoods. You’ll try several types of iconic tacos: guisados, campechanos, carnitas, tacos al pastor from the taquería that claims to have invented it, and cochinita pibil. You’ll learn the stories behind these famous tacos that represent styles of cooking from all over the country.

You’ll also visit the local Medellín Market which boasts an incredible variety of fresh produce and try fresh “nixtamal” tortillas from a local tortillería. After your tasting experience, you’ll know the history and preparation of some stellar tacos in Mexico City. And, you’ll learn why a taco isn’t just a local dish, it’s a way of eating.

  • The tour is conducted rain or shine.
  • We like to blend in with the locals. Dress in comfortable clothing, and leave any flashy or expensive clothes and jewelry at home. Note: Mexico City can be chilly in the mornings and warmer in the afternoon, so it’s best to dress in layers.
  • This tour includes a lot of food. We recommend arriving hungry and avoid eating a big meal beforehand.
  • Vegetarians can be accommodated on this tour, but meat and vegetables will be cooked on the same surface.
  • Feel free to bring your own water bottle. We’ll stop to refill it with purified water.
  • Mexico City sits at nearly 7,300 feet high. This means you’ll feel more tired than normal if you’re not used to the altitude. Don’t do this tour if you haven’t gotten any sleep the night before, or if you’re arriving to the airport on the same morning.
  • If you’d like to make any purchases (see our FAQ on souvenirs), bring cash and a small tote bag. Credit cards are not accepted here. Please note that prices at this market tend to be slightly higher than other neighborhood markets around the city.

No. This tour meets in front of Sixties Bar, Avenida Sonora 210 at the corner of Insurgentes. It will end at El Tizoncito on Av. Tamaulipas 122, Condesa. If you need help getting back to your hotel at the end of the tour, your guide will help you find the nearest subway station or an Uber.

Yes! You can eat as much as you want in each of the stops. Our guide will let you know how many stops remain so you can pace yourself. No one knows your appetite better than you!

If you plan to tip your guide, you should bring enough cash to cover that—about 10 to 15 percent is standard. You may also choose to bring a bit extra for any market goods. All the food you can eat, plus two drinks and purified water, are covered by us.

Of course! Our guides are culinary experts and speak perfect English.

Not really. It is a good place to buy food or Mexican ingredients. The market does not carry items such as colorful ceramics, Mexican textiles or folk art.

We have offered this tour since 2010 and never had an issue with violence or theft. That said, Mexico City is an enormous place and pickpocketing can happen. If you wear plain clothing, leave your jewelry at home, and keep your wallet and cellphone tucked away, there should be no problem.

We usually require a two-person minimum on our tours. If you’re a solo traveler, you’re welcome to book the date of your choosing—if it has other guests, you’re good to go. If three days prior to the tour date, the tour does not have any other guests, we will reach out to you about choosing a different date or refund your ticket.

My boyfriend and I did the Chilango Tacos tour and loved it! The food was amazing and there was lots of it- I ended the tour feeling stuffed. We also learned a ton about the food and history of Mexico City from our amazing guide. He knew the answers to all our questions and seemed to know everyone in town. Overall, I would highly recommend.

My 3rd time doing the Chilangos Taco Tour with Eat Mexico Culinary Tours & I love it every single time. The past two times I was fortunate enough to have the amazing Adrian as my guide. He’s so knowledgeable & passionate, plus he’s a super nice guy. This tour rocks. Great service, communications, value, experience – 5 stars each time.

This tour is an excellent value for learning the history and flavors of many different types of tacos. If you are at all interested in tacos, I don’t think you could find a better value or use of your time than this tour. Seriously top notch.

rachaelgking | January 2019

This afternoon tour way exceeded my expectations! I mean I expected delicious tacos, but Nico went above and beyond. He was so knowledgeable (a former chef for years, with a culinary degree) who had cooked all over the city, and he shared such interesting stories and histories with us along the way.

LeBron James and Jason Sudeikis tout Taco Bell's new $5 Taco Tuesday deal: How to get it

Would you watch a sitcom starring lebron james and jason sudeikis the two star in a new taco bell commercial for a fictitious, goofy tv show called "taco twosday," as friends exploring new pursuits..

taco food tour

Just in time for Taco Tuesday, Taco Bell has a new meal deal, the $5 Taco Discovery Box.

The meal, which comes with a Crunchy Taco, Doritos Locos Taco, a new Cantina Chicken Crispy Taco and a medium drink, will be available on Tuesdays now through June 4. Taco Bell launched a menu featuring its Cantina Chicken Menu , with slow-roasted, shredded chicken, in March.

The fast food chain has also cooked up a funny Taco Tuesday commercial starring LeBron James and Jason Sudeikis. In this new ad, which launches Thursday, they co-star as two friends trying new things in a '70s-themed sitcom called "Taco Twosday."

Golden deal: Ritz giving away 24-karat gold bar worth $100,000 in honor of its latest 'Buttery-er' cracker

This isn't the first time James or Sudeikis have championed Taco Bell. James helped the company prevail in the long-simmering fight over the "Taco Tuesday" phrase . Sudeikis recently appeared in another Taco Bell commercial promoting the new Cantina Chicken Menu.

“We should all strive to try something new on Tuesdays whether it’s a new taco, a different combination of your favorites or simply stepping out of our comfort zones during the week,” Sudeikis said in a press release about the new Taco Tuesday deal and commercial.

Taco Bell also recently announced the return of its popular Nacho Fries ; the menu item will become available Thursday, April 25.

Worthington Farmers Market, Columbus Food Adventures voted as the best in the country

Local produce at the farmers market in Worthington.

The Worthington Farmers Market is to open its summer season May 4 with a major honor to its credit. It has been voted by readers of USA TODAY as the nation's best farmers market.

They must be doing something right at the market that runs every Saturday from 8 a.m. to noon along a stretch of High Street in Old Worthington. The Worthington Farmers Market topped outdoor markets that operate along the Intracoastal Waterway in West Palm Beach, Florida, and at an oceanfront park in Honolulu.

The West Palm Beach GreenMarket had been voted No. 1 in USA TODAY's 10 best reader polls for three straight years. This was the first year Worthington's market was nominated by a panel of travel writers and other experts.

More farmers markets: When do area farmers markets open? Here's a guide to where and when to go

The result of reader votes were announced today.

"Nearly 100 vendors from the Columbus area converge for the year-round Worthington Farmers Market that adapts to the seasons," USA TODAY wrote.

"In summer, May through October, farmers and producers of high-quality food and plants sell al fresco in the Old Worthington Historic District. The rest of the year, the market goes indoors at The Shops at Worthington Place."

The last indoor market takes place Saturday before it moves outdoors for summer.

Organizers say the Worthington Farmers Market, which began in 1987, should have its highest number of vendors ever this summer.

Columbus Food Adventures another favorite

Another favorite of Columbus foodies also was voted as the nation's best by USA TODAY readers. Columbus Food Adventures , which leads geography and cuisine-based food tours in Columbus and its suburbs, topped a list of nominees that included tours in Las Vegas, Los Angeles, Seattle, New Orleans and Chicago.

Here's how Columbus Food Adventures was described by USA TODAY: "From neighborhood walking tours to by-van excursions and private tours, Columbus Food Adventures offers a full menu of ways to meet the area's rich culinary scene. Whether you're a meat-lover, brew-hound, taco fiend or gastronomic globe-trotter, there's a tour to fit your appetite."

Walking tours include the Short North, German Village, Grandview Avenue, Dublin and Old Worthington, while van tours hit local taco trucks or a variety of international restaurants.

Results of a third USA TODAY reader vote also were announced. Budd Dairy Food Hall , the Italian-Village collection of bars and restaurants in an old milk-bottling plant, finished at No. 3 in voting for the nation's best food hall.

Mother Road Market in Tulsa, Oklahoma, finished at the top in national voting, while the Garage Food Hall in Indianapolis finished second.

Budd Dairy was ranked sixth in a list of the best U.S. food halls posted by the global travel site Big 7 Travel .

Cancun Taco Tour and Mexican Beer

The Authentic Cancun Taco Tour! Experience the real Mexico as locals would, feeling the comfort and safety of your resort.

taco food tour

Mexico is a very big country with a population of over 128 million. More than 60 ethnic groups and seven of the Major Ancient Civilizations were located in Mexico before mixing with the Spanish and Arabs.

All this diversity is also represented in tacos, from recipes and taquerias around Mexico. Only in Cancun, there are more than 150 taquerias to choose from.

That’s why we created the first and authentic Cancun Taco Tour and Mexican Beer, where you’ll experience 5 taco varieties from the VERY BEST TAQUERIAS IN CANCUN!

With smooth pick-up from your hotel lobby, our bilingual local guide will explain to you the history behind each taco and each taqueria. How locals eat each taco, salsa, ingredients, and the perfect pairing beer or drink. Experience how real handmade tortillas are made, and try them straight from the comal, listen the mariachis and get a delicious night market dessert before getting safely back to your hotel.

  • 100% from Foodies to Foodies: We choose the taquerias depending on flavour, history, prestige and actuality, ensuring you are getting the very top 5 tacos , not only the ones that are near to make a walking route
  • Intimate setting: Limited to 12 foodies per group with reserved spots in each taqueria to avoid waiting/wasting time.
  • Safety and Hygiene: We visit different neighborhoods by van, always with your certified guide next to you.
  • Eater Guarantee: Do you eat a lot? If at the last taco stop you are still hungry you can ask for more tacos.

  • Yucatan/Mayan Taco: A 24-hour underground roasted pork that has been marinated with annatto and sour orange which can be only found in the Yucatan area.
  • South Mexico City Taco:   The favorite in the center of the country. A mix of Beef, chorizo & chicharron.
  • Mexico’s favorite Taco: Slow vapor cooking for the softest meat taco. The favorite of most Mexicans, not known by foreigners.
  • North Mexico Taco: Overnight marinated skirt steak, soft and meaty.
  • Taco al pastor: The most known pork taco, with onions, coriander, and pineapple.
  • Delicious local dessert. We leave this as a surprise!

Twists on 'Taco Tuesday' and the hamburger: New Bedford Eats

Are you looking to try something new and exciting for your taste buds in the New Bedford area?

From Caribbean flavors at G's Kitchen to Portuguese-inspired dishes at Blue Point, there are a few menu items that are surely new for the pallet. And who says Taco Tuesday has to be the same old tacos, too? There is also a taco omelette for a fresh twist on a classic favorite.

In addition to tasty dishes, the Black Whale has also recently opened their updated patio for a new and improved dining experience.

So, if you're looking to switch-it-up this week with a new twist on fan favorites, check out these places around the New Bedford area doing just that on their menu.

Experience the flavors of the Caribbean

G's Kitchen has become the premier destination for authentic Caribbean cuisine. The dishes are carefully prepared with the freshest ingredients and infused with traditional flavors. Located at 812 Brock Ave. or through DoorDash, UberEats, or Grubhub, for the month of April, G's is offering a special promotion of any two meals for just $25. The must-try menu of items include smoothies, Haitian-style fried goat with rice and beans, the flavorful red snapper and more. The salmon and rice and bean mix is also a customer favorite.

More: Closed for 15 years, Fairhaven's old Bijou Theatre building is active again. Step inside.

Try a Portuguese-style burger at Blue Point

Blue Point Restaurant, located at 6 Dayton St. in Acushnet, features several different Portuguese-style dishes such as the haddock and a a true Portuguese burger topped with St. Jorge cheese, red peppers, and egg on a bulky roll served with a chef's homemade gravy inside of round fries.

Other items to try are the French Dip sandwich, and a frozen rum punch cocktail. But the specials don't stop there. Blue Point also offers a variety of homemade dessert options, such as apple crisp with the option to add ice cream, grape nut pudding, blueberry crisp, carrot cake cheesecake, classic cheesecake, a banana cream square cheesecake tiramisu, and a pineapple upside-down cake.

If you're in the mood for appetizers, Blue Point has you covered with their buffalo chicken dip with chips, buffalo chicken fingers, crab cakes, and Italian cheesy sticks. And for entrees, you'll find a variety of options to satisfy any craving. From a junior Portuguese steak to a filet mignon. Chicken lovers will enjoy dishes like chicken parmesan and chicken broccoli penne. And for seafood fans, Blue Point offers fried seafood plates, baked scrod, baked scallops, lobster casserole and a New England clam boil.

Celebrate Taco Tuesday with a Taco Omelette

Located at 2331 Acushnet Ave, Toast N Jam has quickly become a local hotspot for delicious breakfast and brunch options. Owned by the mastermind behind the former restaurant, What's Cookin, this new location is gaining rave reviews for its mouth-watering menu items such as the chicken & waffle benedict, a delightful twist on the classic dish. And for those with a sweet tooth, the Ultimate Banana Foster, which according to the menu, it's like the regular one, but on steroids! And on Taco Tuesday make sure to try the taco omelette Special.

The Black Whale  has officially opened their newly renovated outdoor patio.

The addition of the patio, which opened softly on April 11, has been an anticipated project for the restaurant, as it aims to elevate the three pillars of their business: food, service and ambiance. One of the main features of the updated patio is the permanently installed retractable awning. This modern and sleek addition not only enhances the overall look of the area but also provides a functional purpose. The Black Whale has also added multiple heating systems to the patio, making it possible for guests to dine comfortably for most of the year. The outdoor dining experience promises to be a cozy and enjoyable one.

More than just a bowl of noodles, ramen in Japan is an experience and a tourist attraction

Spicy, steaming, slurpy ramen may be everyone’s favorite Japanese food. In Tokyo, long lines circle around blocks, and waiting an hour for your favorite ramen is normal. What awaits might just be a dive, but a hot bowl of ramen rarely fails to hit the spot. (AP Video/Hiromi Tanoue and Ayaka McGill)

TOKYO (AP) — Spicy, steaming, slurpy ramen might be everyone’s favorite Japanese food.

In Tokyo, long lines circle around blocks, and waiting an hour for your ramen is normal. What awaits might be just a dive, but a hot bowl of ramen rarely fails to hit the spot.

Often cooked right before your eyes behind dingy counters, the noodle dish starts here at around 1,000 yen ($6.50), and comes in various flavors and local versions. There’s salty, soy-based “shoyu” or “miso” paste. Perhaps it’s red-hot spicy with a dash of chili. Sometimes there’s no soup at all but a sauce to dip the noodles in.

The curly noodles are lighter than the darker buckwheat “soba,” or “udon,” which are also usually flatter or thicker.

This photo shows the ingredients to cook ramen easily in Tokyo, on April 22, 2024. Ramen noodles are so popular they have become one reason to visit Japan. But ramen can easily be cooked at home too, especially if you can find the ingredients at your neighborhood Asian grocery store. (AP Photo/Yuri Kageyama)

GLOBAL SUCCESS

Ramen has also surged in popularity in the U.S. , South Korea and other countries. Retail sales in the United States have risen 72% since 2000, according to NielsenIQ, a sales tracker. In the 52 weeks ending April 13, Americans bought more than $1.6 billion worth of ramen.

In restaurants, versions beyond the traditional soup are appearing, said Technomic, a research and consulting company for the restaurant industry. Del Taco, a Mexican chain, recently introduced Shredded Beef Birria Ramen, for example.

Packaged ramen that’s easily cooked in hot water at home is called instant noodles; it’s precooked and then dried. The story of how Momofuku Ando invented instant ramen in a backyard shed in 1958, when food was still scarce, is the stuff of legend in Japan . He went on to found the food giant Nissin Foods.

Although convenient, instant noodles aren’t the same as the ramen served at restaurants.

THE EXPERIENCE

Some Japanese frequent ramen shops twice or three times a week. They emerge, dripping with sweat, smacking their lips.

“I’m probably a talking bowl of ramen,” says Frank Striegl as he leads a dozen American tourists through the back alleys of Tokyo’s funky Shibuya district on what he calls “the ultimate ramen experience.”

The crowd is led behind a shabby doorway, sometimes down narrow stairs, to a dim-lit table where ramen gets served in tiny bowls, practically the size of a latte cup, or about a quarter of a regular ramen bowl. That’s so guests have enough room in their tummies to try out six different kinds of ramen, two at each spot during the tour.

One restaurant, Shinbusakiya, offers “Hokkaido classics” from the northernmost main island, while another, Nagi, offers “Fukuoka fusion,” from the southern main island of Kyushu. It includes a green ramen, similar to pasta al pesto. Syuuichi, which means “once a week,” features curry-flavored ramen.

“It’s not just, of course, about eating delicious ramen, but also learning about it,” said Striegl, a Filipino American who grew up in Tokyo. He calls ramen “people’s food.”

“A lot of countries around the world have their version of ramen in a way,” he said. “So I think because of that, it’s a dish that’s easy to understand. It’s a dish that’s easy to get behind.”

While the tour participants were relishing their noodles, Striegl outlined a brief history of ramen: Its roots date back to the samurai era, when a shogun took a fancy to Chinese noodles, setting off the localizing journey for ramen that continues today.

Katie Sell, a graduate student on Striegl’s tour, called ramen “a kind of comfort food, especially in the winter. Get a group of friends, go have some ramen and just enjoy it.”

Kavi Patel, an engineer from New Jersey, said he was glad he included the humble ramen on his tour of Japan, along with more established attractions like the ancient capital of Kyoto and the deer park in Nara. “I’m having good fun,” he said.

ADJUSTING TO CHANGE

While ramen has never been more popular in Japan, ramen places have struggled because of the pandemic, the weakening Japanese yen, and the higher cost of wheat imports and energy, according to a study by Tokyo Shoko Research.

One beneficiary of the pandemic is a home delivery service for frozen, professionally cooked ramen. Called takumen.com, it boasts some 500,000 subscribers in Japan.

Another Tokyo operation, Gourmet Innovation, has signed on 250 of the country’s top ramen joints to sell packaged versions of their soup, noodles and toppings, to be heated up in boiling water and served at home.

Co-founder and executive Kenichi Nomaguchi, who hopes to expand his business overseas, says ramen and animation are Japan’s most successful exports.

Why ramen? Unlike pasta or curry, ramen is difficult to replicate at home, he said, Making it from scratch involves hours of cooking stock, with pork, beef or chicken, various fish or bonito flakes, and “kombu” kelp. Some stock uses oysters.

LOTS OF VARIETY

Besides the different soup stocks and flavors, onions, grated garlic, ginger or sesame oil can be added for extra punch. Toppings can include bean sprouts, barbecued pork, boiled or raw eggs, seaweed, fermented bamboo shoots called “menma,” chopped green onions, cooked cabbage, snow peas or corn.

Some insist a bowl of ramen is not complete without a slice of narutomaki, a whitefish cake with a pink spiral pattern.

Unusual varieties include coffee ramen and ramen topped with ice cream or pineapple.

Jiro-style ramen, named for a legendary restaurant in Tokyo, features mounds of vegetable toppings, huge steak-like barbecued pork and pungent, grated garlic seeped in a fatty pork-based stock.

“Impact is important. So the pork has to be big so it’s truly memorable,” said Kota Kobayashi, who serves Jiro-style ramen at his chain, “Ore No Ikiru Michi,” which translates to, “The way I live my life.”

Kobayashi is a former professional baseball player at the Yokohama Bay Stars, and played with the minor league Cleveland Guardians before switching to his ramen business.

“When I quit baseball, I chose ramen as my way of life,” he said with a smile.

He can wax philosophical about ramen. One cultural difference he has observed is that Americans tend to leave the noodles and drink all the soup, while the Japanese mostly do the opposite.

And taste is only part of what makes good ramen. One must also offer entertainment, Kobayashi said.

At his restaurants, the chopsticks are tucked in a box on a shelf, so first-time visitors ask where they are. Repeat customers go straight to that box. Kobayashi calls out, “Welcome back,” making the customers feel a connection, even if he doesn’t remember a thing about them.

The Mixed Martial Artist Who Became the King of Tidy Eating

Rapturously messy food reviews are all over the internet. Keith Lee’s discreet eating style rises above them all.

taco food tour

By Aaron Timms

Keith Lee is sitting in the passenger seat of a car outside Juanderful Tacos in Phoenix. “I’m going to show you everything we got, and we’re going to try it and rate it 1 through 10,” he announces to his 16.1 million TikTok followers, his hands brought together in a steeple. He presents four partly unwrapped tacos for viewers’ consideration: pollo, carne asada, cabeza and a pollo quesataco. He attacks the quesataco first, sprinkling a pinch of chopped onion and cilantro over its innards, topping everything off with salsa verde and a squeeze of lime. He displays the taco’s cross-section for the camera, then carefully introduces one end of the oozing canoe — a mass of meat, cheese and salsa already lugeing toward the limits of its enclosure — into his mouth.

The bite is comprehensive. Every ingredient makes it in. It is also clean: There is no residue left around Lee’s lips. A few seconds of moistly entranced chewing follow before Lee brings his nontaco hand to his mouth and announces — from behind a guard of fingers laced with a single streak of green sauce — “It’s so fresh, crisp, seasoned: 8.7 out of 10. I need about six of these though, I ain’t gonna lie to you. Six or seven.”

He is comfortably one of the cleanest professional eaters at work today.

Lee proceeds to eat the three remaining tacos, pausing only to rave about their quality. But each time he does so, it’s from behind one hand, which is always politely shielding his mouth. He even apologizes for the watery fleck of salsa still trailing across his fingers: “Excuse my hands. I got messy.”

In the comments, Lee’s followers try to prepare Juanderful Tacos for the torrent of business that restaurants face once they’ve received a Keith Lee tick of approval. (“Get ready tomorrow!”) Among the growing ranks of online food influencers — all the professional and semiprofessional eaters jawing straight into the camera on TikTok, YouTube and Instagram — few are bigger or more influential than Lee. He turned to food reviewing as his first career, in mixed martial arts, was coming to an end, and in the short time since, he’s amassed not only millions of followers but also the power to change restaurants’ fortunes and provoke hysterical debate in some of the cities he visits. He’s admired for the attention he pays to small, independent businesses; for his closeness to his family, which accompanies him on cross-country food tours; for his appreciation of good service and generosity with tips.

Yet there’s been little discussion of his uniquely dainty eating style, which is a key element of his aesthetic and a leading source, I believe, of his success.

Like many of the reviewers who’ve achieved popularity on social apps, Lee performs most of his food criticism in his car — a cramped and inhospitable environment for consumption of the saucy, sticky, fried and gloop-rich takeaway foods that dominate critical attention in straight-to-camera TikTok reviews. The “money shot” of food being inserted into mouth, usually to a soundtrack of proto-sexual groans, has long been a key element of food TV. But lately, online food culture has entered an “oral” era that puts the fleshy, wettened mouth — at once destructive and violated in the act of ingestion — at the center of the spectacle. There seems to be a growing emphasis, among popular food accounts, on the messiness of the overflowing orifice as individual eaters shovel food down their throats; online, the mouth has become a canvas for thick spacklings of various juices, pastes, condiments and whips.

If you think I’m exaggerating, consider a recent post from @sanaaeats, in which the popular culinary influencer (1.6 million followers across TikTok and Instagram) feeds herself fingers of chicken, Texas toast and crinkle-cut fries drowned in a jumbo cup of Raising Cane’s sauce — the camera lingering on each bite just long enough to reveal the viscous splatter around her mouth. Then there’s @lukefoods (1.3 million followers): “Come to me, baby, come to me,” he croons, in the driver’s seat of his car, before dunking a paddle of naan into a portable motorized fountain of butter chicken, then wedging the smothered bread into his mouth in a way that leaves his lips ringed with a rusty smear. Even among those reviewers not confined to their cars, the lure of the deep oral reveal remains strong. The Staten Island native @meals_by_cug (4 million followers), whose food account doubles as a pastiche of Italian American culture, frequently delivers his one-liners through a mouth filled with half-chewed rigatoni or meatball parm, while the English food reviewer @mashtag_brady (2.2 million followers) posts videos of food not only entering his mouth but exiting as well. (A recent account of his attempt to eat a raw oyster for the first time — “This is going to be mingin’, mate” — concluded with him announcing to the camera through a beard of brown vomit: “Well, I didn’t like that.” ) The attention economy rewards sensationalism, pushing sloppy eaters toward ever-sloppier stunts of consumption — but also satisfying, I think, a collective craving for mess, disorder and irresponsibility amid the bland conformism of algorithmic culture.

Amid this mouthy excess, the discreet, almost demure way in which Lee feeds himself — the precise bites, the careful chewing, the mouth politely covered as he offers his critique of the food inside — seems quaintly old-fashioned. This isn’t to say that Lee never gets stuff on his face; we all do. But he is comfortably one of the cleanest professional eaters at work today. For one recent review, when the restaurant failed to provide any utensils, Lee managed to eat a beef pancake, chicken and vegetable won tons in chili sauce, a spiralized coil of cucumber, chicken xiao long bao (“Excuse me if I pronounced that wrong”) and chicken potstickers, all using nothing but his hands. Where other food influencers might have used this as an invitation to take a bath in their dinner, Lee’s fingers and mouth remained almost completely spotless, to the very end.

The grace of Lee’s eating style is all the more striking when you consider the messily physical business to which he previously devoted himself. As an MMA fighter, Lee contested 13 professional bouts (eight wins, five losses) using the nickname Killa. In his final fight for the Bellator promotion, in August 2021, he lost to Jornel Lugo. The contest lasted only five minutes, and ended once Lee, who was 24 at the time, lost consciousness under the force of Lugo’s chokehold, his arms flapping weakly in a doomed attempt to forestall defeat. In footage of the bout, Lee stumbles around the arena in a daze once the fight stops, his face ripped and busted, a bright jam of blood covering his mouth and nose.

As a food critic, Lee has discovered precisely the kind of delicacy and control that are stripped away in the ring. The mouth is recovered; the arms are restored to a position of protective strength. Killa, now an Eata, has traded the enclosure of the MMA cage for that of the front seat, the brutality of the chokehold for the elegance of the coiled cucumber. Where his peers marinate in excess, he maintains order. His discipline at the point of ingestion makes him stand out against the internet’s fat-saturated foodscape.

Violence cannot be avoided entirely, even when it comes to food; Lee attracts such attention that he recently announced that a security team would accompany his family on a forthcoming trip to Atlanta. (“There’s people with us that are legal and licensed,” he said. “We don’t want to have to use them, but we will.”) But in the bubble of his car, as he’s eating, Lee creates a perfectly serene space in which the viciousness of the world outside is kept at bay. Before the dashboard’s rapt millions, whenever tacos or patties or potstickers are up for discussion, civility and decorum briefly have the upper hand.

Fun facts from our Moscow Metro Tours:

From the very first days of its existence, the Moscow Metro was the object of civil defense, used as a bomb shelter, and designed as a defense for a possible attack on the Soviet Union.

At a depth of 50 to 120 meters lies the second, the coded system of Metro-2 of Moscow subway, which is equipped with everything you need, from food storage to the nuclear button.

According to some sources, the total length of Metro-2 reaches over 150 kilometers.

The Museum was opened on Sportivnaya metro station on November 6, 1967. It features the most interesting models of trains and stations.

Coffee Ring

The first scheme of Moscow Metro looked like a bunch of separate lines. Listen to a myth about Joseph Stalin and the main brown line of Moscow Metro.

Zodiac Metro

According to some astrologers, each of the 12 stops of the Moscow Ring Line corresponds to a particular sign of the zodiac and divides the city into astrological sector.

Astrologers believe that being in a particular zadiac sector of Moscow for a long time, you attract certain energy and events into your life.

Paleontological finds

Red marble walls of some of the Metro stations hide in themselves petrified inhabitants of ancient seas. Try and find some!

  • Every day each car in  Moscow metro passes  more than 600 km, which is the distance from Moscow to St. Petersburg.
  • Moscow subway system is the  5th in the intensity  of use (after the subways of Beijing, Tokyo, Seoul and Shanghai).
