Nor is it a bunch of bridges or famous people who have sauntered along its banks, which is what one usually hears when the Seine is mentioned. The Seine is at the center of Parisian life, dear to all Parisian hearts, a vital artery that flows with economic and fun-filled activities. Events like Paris Plages and The Banks of the Seine, as well as a fondness for the bâteaux-mouches, or river boats, show at what point the Seine is far from drying up!

The 1910 Flood

It’s hard to imagine Parisians getting around on small boats or walkways constructed by inhabitants themselves, especially when one considers Paris’s world-famous drainage system. And yet the city was on lockdown during the 1910 flood when the Seine rose to an incredible 8.62 meters, level with the Pont d’Austerlitz. The Zouave statue on the Pont d’Alma, another famous Parisian landmark often used to determine water level, had the Seine up to its shoulders. Today, several old buildings have markings to indicate just how high the water rose.

Going for a Dip in the Seine

Before 1923, when bathing in the Seine was officially prohibited, Parisians swam in the river during heat waves, organized swimming competitions such as The Crossing of Paris, and even dove in naked (women were nonetheless covered up with stretched fabric) when it was fashion to do so during the 17th century. Boats were even installed to take hot baths.

The Dog Washers

Dog washers is one of the jobs that disappeared. Before the existence of dog grooming, dog washers and cutters took man’s best friend to the banks of the Seine to bathe and style the canines. This activity continued during the 19th century and up until the beginning of the 20th century. As is the case for humans, cleaning and/or bathing dogs in the Seine is discouraged. One mustn’t forget that Paris is Europe’s second busiest port!

The company Bateaux Mouches has been operating on the Seine River since 1949! The iconic Bâteaux Mouches is today the 4th most visited paid attraction in Paris, only after the Eiffel Tower, the Louvre Museum, and the Centre Georges Pompidou.

The Bâteaux Mouches can transport up to 600 passengers. They are the big double-decker boats with orange seats sailing on the River.

This  Seine River cruise hop-on, hop-off is the less touristy option available on the Seine River, without audio commentary. It is a great alternative to the classic Paris hop-on hop-off bus because it avoids the traffic jams on the streets of Paris.

This is the best Paris River cruise for a more local experience. It is possible to get on the Batobus Paris as often as you want over a specified period of time without buying new tickets.

Batobus is the Seine River tour that we know best because years ago, it was included in the monthly Navigo Pass Metro ticket. It was fun to sail the River Seine from time to time!

• Duration: 1 day or 2 days, with unlimited trips
• Departure /arrival point: passengers can hop on and hop off the boat from any of its 9 different stops: Eiffel Tower, Invalides/Pont Alexandre III, Musée d’Orsay, St Germain des Prés, Notre-Dame, Jardin des Plantes /Cité de la Mode, Hôtel de Ville, Louvre, Champs-Elysées.
• Only the Eiffel Tower and Louvre stops are accessible to those in wheelchairs. The other stops have too many steps for wheelchairs.

5. Paris Duck Tour (Tour on an Amphibious Bus)

The Paris Duck Tour is the latest addition to this list of Seine River cruises in Paris. This small bus, for only 35 people, can also navigate along the Seine River, so you have a bus tour and a Seine boat tour for the price of one! The splash! takes place on the outskirts of Paris, where you can discover the Seine Musicale, the Parc de Saint-Cloud, and the Bois de Boulogne. Count on sailing about 20 minutes of the 1 hr 45 min that lasts the full tour.

The River Seine, often intertwined with the identity of Paris, originates far from the bustling cityscape. It emerges from a site known as Source-Seine, nestled in the Plateau of Langres within the Côtes d’Or department of the Bourgogne-Franche-Comté region , at an altitude of 446 meters above sea level.

Winding its way across a span of 777 kilometers, the Seine traverses notable urban centers such as Troyes, Paris , and Rouen before flowing into the English Channel through a broad estuary flanked by the bustling ports of Le Havre and Honfleur .

Named after the Celtic deity Sequana , who was believed to inhabit its sacred source, the Seine carries a rich tapestry of cultural significance stretching back through the annals of time.

Above the spring’s inception, a man-made grotto erected in 1865 provides shelter to a statue embodying the nymph Sequana. Traditionally depicted as a graceful young woman standing upon a boat, the statue housed within this grotto is a replica of the original work by François Jouffroy , which depicted her reclining.

The vestiges of the Roman temple, once positioned near the source await potential excavation in the coming years. The archaeological museum of Dijon currently hosts a collection of various offerings and ex-votos unearthed from the surrounding area, offering insights into the region’s rich historical tapestry.

The River Seine in Paris

Flowing through Paris from east to west, the River Seine stretches for 13 kilometers at an elevation of precisely 26.72 meters above sea level.

With widths ranging from 30 meters to 200 meters and depths from 3.4 meters to 5.7 meters, it forms a vital waterway for the city.

The River Seine is spanned by 37 bridges, among them 4 footbridges, which have stirred the creativity of poets and songwriters, inspiring odes to Parisian romance such as “ Sous le Pont Mirabeau ” and “Sous les Ponts de Paris.”

Its historical significance is evident from ancient times, attracting settlements since the Neolithic era and continuing to play a crucial role in transportation. The discovery of ancient barges in the Parc de Bercy , now housed at the Carnavalet Museum, serves as a testament to its enduring importance.

The Corporation of the Boatmen of Paris – Nautes Parisiens

The origins of the Corporation of the Boatmen of Paris can be traced back to the Celtic tribe Parisii , who long before Roman colonization settled on the Ile de la Cité , strategically positioned at the crossing of the River Seine and ancient north-south routes.

Proficient navigators on the Seine, the Parisii expanded their maritime activities following the Roman conquest.

The esteemed Nautes Parisiens corporation erected several monuments, notably the impressive Pillar of the Boatmen – Pilier des Nautes Parisiens, now housed in the Cluny Museum .

Flourishing during the Middle Ages through river trade, the corporation played a pivotal role in establishing the city’s earliest administrative structures. Their coat of arms, featuring a sailing boat navigating the River Seine, eventually became the official coat of arms of Paris .

Spanning the River Seine

In the 1st century AD, the Romans constructed the first bridge over the River Seine, rebuilding the wooden structure initially erected by the Parisii before the conquest.

Known as the Petit Pont, it stretches across the smaller arm of the River Seine, connecting the Ile de la Cité with Rue St Jacques on the Left Bank .

Recognized as Paris’ first and oldest bridge, it has preserved its original name despite undergoing several reconstructions throughout the centuries.

In addition to the Petit Pont, thirty-six other bridges have been built over the River Seine.

A once essential water supply source for Parisians

The Seine played a crucial role as a water supply source for Parisians over the centuries.

In 1608, a water pump called Samaritaine was installed beneath the Pont-Neuf , providing water to the Louvre until 1813. However, in medieval Paris, access to such infrastructure was lacking, and running water was virtually nonexistent. As a result, people either collected water directly from the river or purchased it from street vendors.

To address this issue, Napoleon initiated the construction of the Canal St Martin and Bassin de La Villette in the early 19th century, aiming to supply water to public fountains throughout the city.

Beyond its practical utility, the Seine also served as a natural recreational space for Parisians. Many would stroll along its banks or even swim in its waters.

Although swimming in the Seine was officially prohibited by decree in 1923, the tradition of enjoying the riverside continues with the annual Paris Plages event. During the summer months, locals and visitors alike can still relax and unwind in the heart of Paris along the banks of the Seine.

River Seine – once temperamental

The River Seine, once wild and unpredictable, was renowned for its ever-changing nature. In harsh winters, it would freeze solid, allowing pedestrians to traverse its icy surface on foot.

However, as spring arrived and temperatures warmed, massive blocks of ice would break free, often leading to bridge damage and flooding in nearby areas.

Throughout its history, the Seine has witnessed numerous significant floods, with notable occurrences in 358-59 AD and 582 AD.

The flood of 1280 resulted in the destruction of the Grand-Pont ( Pont Notre-Dame ), while the flood of 1296 was particularly devastating, submerging all of Paris’s bridges, which were then lined with houses.

One of the most memorable floods struck in 1910, lasting for nine days and causing the water level to surge by 9.50 meters between January 20th and 28th.

River Seine shaped Paris

The River Seine has wielded significant influence in sculpting the geographical features of Paris, shaping and reshaping the land over time.

Numerous islands and islets have emerged from its waters, each serving distinct purposes throughout history. Some, like those near Ile de la Cité , were consolidated to expand existing landmasses, while others contributed to the formation of new areas such as Ile St Louis . An example is the Ile Louviers , once near Ile St-Louis, which was connected to the right bank to create what is now Quartier Morland.

Further downstream, the imposing Ile aux Cygnes , an 890-meter-long embankment built in 1827, was instrumental in supporting the construction of three Parisian bridges. Initially named Ile Maquerelle , this island, nestled between the river and Rue de l’Université, was attached to the Rive Gauche.

Over millennia, natural processes have also left their mark on the River Seine, leading to changes in its course and the surrounding terrain.

One significant alteration occurred on the Right Bank, where a broad meander developed. Eventually, the river shifted course, leaving behind a sizable piece of land that gradually evolved into marshland, earning the area its name, Marais .

During the 11th century, the Knights Templar and monks of the Abbaye de St Martin-des-Champs undertook the monumental task of draining the marsh (marais) , reclaiming the land for human habitation. For centuries, these religious institutions remained among the few settlements in the Marais region.

River Seine banks in modern days

In recent years, there has been a concerted effort to enhance and beautify the banks and quays of the River Seine, transforming them into pedestrian-friendly areas and verdant public gardens.

Certain stretches of the riverbanks have been permanently closed to vehicular traffic, providing serene spaces for leisurely strolls.

VIVA Cruises to launch Seine River voyages this winter

FORT LAUDERDALE — VIVA Cruises has unveiled a new series of Seine River voyages departing this winter season.

Sailing aboard the newly refreshed VIVA Gloria, these ‘winter magic’ sailings include seven unique itineraries, including six-day Advent cruises, a seven-day Christmas cruise, and a luxurious seven-day New Year’s cruise. Available this November and December, each itinerary begins and ends in Paris and offers enriching excursions, such as panoramic city tours of Paris and optional outings to historic sites. 

“We are thrilled to introduce these new Seine River cruises to some of France’s most stunning destinations and share the refreshed ambiance of the VIVA Gloria with our guests,” said Andrea Kruse, CEO of VIVA Cruises. “In keeping with the company motto, ‘Enjoy the Moment,’ these voyages exemplify VIVA Cruises’ commitment to taking travellers on expertly curated journeys, complete with specialty excursions that immerse our guests in the local culture and heritage.”

VIVA Gloria Junior Suite

The cruises begin with an overnight mooring in Paris near the Eiffel Tower, allowing guests to easily explore the city’s iconic landmarks. From there, they will journey to Normandy, with visits to historic towns like Poissy, Les Andelys and Rouen, renowned for landmarks such as the Rouen Cathedral and the Joan of Arc Museum. Excursions to towns like Vernon and Conflans will further enrich the journey.

During the festive season, guests will get the chance to see Paris illuminated by dazzling light festivals and visit the Palace of Versailles. These cruises will also feature traditional Christmas market visits, museum tours, ice skating and French wine tasting sessions at VINO.

While onboard the VIVA Gloria, which accommodates up to 152 passengers in 76 elegantly-appointed cabins, most featuring French balconies, guests will enjoy a range of amenities and facilities, including gourmet meals at Riverside restaurant, the newly-designed VINO wine bar, a cozy lounge, wellness area and a spacious sundeck with a heated pool. During themed evenings, guests will experience the ambiance of 1930s clubs in Montparnasse and Montmartre, complete with lively tap dancing and Parisian melodies. And for those welcoming the New Year on board, a special six-night cruise will ring in 2025 with champagne and confetti.

All VIVA Cruises itineraries feature signature VIVA all-inclusive product, which includes snacks, full board, alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverages, minibar, beauty products from luxury cosmetic brand Rituals, Wi-Fi, and all tips and gratuities.

What did you expect 3 weeks before Olympics?

Final security preparations for the opening ceremony and then the River Seine is also used for two Olympic events, the triathlon and 10km swim.

Re Triathlon:

The triathlon starts there and the 3 dates are:

30th July: 08:00 - 10:30: Men’s individual

31st July: 08:00 - 10:40: Women’s individual

5th August: 08:00 - 10:10: Mixed relay

“The start will take place on a floating pontoon below the Pont Alexandre III bridge. After a 1.5 km swim through the River Seine (covering two laps, with a 910m first lap and a 590m second lap), the triathletes will reach the transition zone (swim to bike) for the first time on the Pont Alexandre III bridge, after climbing 32 stairs - a first in the history of the Olympic Games.”

Re 10k Swim:

The 10k Long Distance Swimming event is on 8th & 9th August:

“Thousands of fans are expected to line the banks of the Seine River to see the fastest distance swimmers in the world cut through the water for 10km starting at the famed Beaux-Arts-style bridge crossing, Pont Alexandre III.”

It would have been much easier to have posted the Opening Ceremony in the stadium, I just hope it all goes according to plan and without incident. Security is ramping up as the Olympics approach.

If I had a trip reserved for July 1-4, I would not cancel. You'll just have to "plan around it" -- and still enjoy Paris. Staying in the Marais, your immediate surroundings won't be "much" affected.

Look on the bright side: if your trip were for a few weeks later, that could be a bit of a pickle.

Changzhou's "grand canal meets seine river" cultural exchange event arrives in france.

PARIS, May 27, 2024 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- In mid-May, the Changzhou "Grand Canal Meets Seine River" cultural exchange event series arrived in France. The event, organized by the Information Office of Changzhou Municipal People's Government, featured an exhibition of Eastern aesthetics, a visit to Yi Li Garden - the first Chinese garden in France, a cruise on the Seine River, and a stop at the Fontainebleau Palace square. Over 500 friends from various sectors of French society enjoyed an intimate encounter with the Chinese city of Changzhou.

Sightsee Urban Charm

The event featured live city presentations by Changzhou leaders, a city image video in French, introductions to the city via ancient books, and various visual displays, including Jintan paper cuttings and sand art scrolls themed "Grand Canal Meets Seine River". Gilles-Henri Garault, vice chairman of the Society for the Encouragement of National Industry and chairman of the International Committee of France, and Saint-Remy Mayor Bouchard took on the role of cultural ambassadors, hoping to achieve mutual prosperity through the deepening friendship between both sides.

In elegant concert halls, lively boats, beautiful gardens, and picturesque squares, Jiangnan string and woodwind musicians performed famous pieces like "High Mountain and Flowing Water" and "Blue-and-White Porcelain". They took the audience on a time-traveling journey to experience the charm of Jiangnan's water towns. During the event, they also collaborated with Philip Bride, the chief violinist and the President of the National Higher Institute of Marseille, to perform "Red Rose and White Jasmine", creating a symphony of French romance and Oriental elegance.

Breathe in Fragrance of Traditional Chinese Medicine

Traditional Chinese medicine exudes a pleasant fragrance from Changzhou's intangible cultural heritage random stitch embroidery sachets, known for their soothing and stress-relieving effects. These sachets, symbolizing wishes for peace and health, are highly sought after and in short supply. They offered a unique olfactory experience to friends from France, known as the "world's perfume capital".

Taste Jiangnan Cuisine

The tea art performance showcased over ten intricate steps, including washing tea, brewing, smelling the aroma, and tasting. Culinary highlights featured the meticulous knife skills of the blindfolded Wensi tofu cutting, the fine dragon beard noodles, lifelike food carvings, fragrant Changzhou radish fried rice, and unforgettable crab roe buns. Guests like Roger Serbag, secretary general for State and International Cooperation at the French Ministry of Foreign Affairs, and Mahieta Bounshev, chair of UNESCO's affiliated associations, praised the culinary delights.

Experience Traditional Crafts

The demonstration of woodblock printing sparked an interactive frenzy, with everyone eager to try printing their favorite patterns. A long queue formed in front of the Menghe Medical School inheritors, and after experiencing the magical acupuncture, French friends, including Marie François, deputy mayor of Fontainebleau-Samois, marveled at Changzhou's traditional crafts.

This year marks the 60th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between China and France, as well as the China-France Year of Culture and Tourism. The flowing Seine and the Grand Canal bear witness to another encounter, fusion, and mutual understanding between the two countries.
