Category : 2017-2018 Global Spirit Tour

The Global Spirit Tour was a 2017-2018 international tour undertaken by Depeche Mode in support of their fourteenth studio album Spirit .

A press conference was held at the Teatro dell'Arte in Milan on October 11, 2016 at 13:00 CET to announce the new album and tour.

A list of the songs which were part of the pre-show DJ set can be found here: Pre-concert techno sets

Line up and songwriting credits

  • Dave Gahan - lead vocals
  • Martin L. Gore - keyboards, guitar, backing vocals, occasional lead vocals (denoted by (*) in track listings)
  • Andrew Fletcher - keyboards
  • Peter Gordeno - keyboards, bass guitar (during A Pain That I'm Used To and Heroes ), backing vocals
  • Christian Eigner - drums

All songs performed were written by Martin L. Gore, except Cover Me and Poison Heart written by Dave Gahan, Peter Gordeno, and Christian Eigner; Just Can't Get Enough written by Vince Clarke; and Heroes written by David Bowie and Brian Eno.

Depeche Mode will again partner with Swiss watch maker Hublot , raising money and awareness for charity: water . [1]

The songs World In My Eyes , Everything Counts , and Wrong have new intros on this tour.

On most dates, Depeche Mode covers David Bowie's "Heroes" as a tribute to the late musician. The song has an historical connection with the band; you can read more about it on this page: 1980-04-0x Rehearsal, Woodlands School, Basildon, Essex, England, UK

The intro to the show consists of two parts: The first part is a 1:10 clip of The Beatles' "Revolution" and the second part is a remixed version of Cover Me .

At the time of writing (August 3 2017), Dave Gahan appears to have two gimmicks for this tour:

  • During the pre-tour gigs Avatar Studios and Hollywood Forever as well as every gig on this tour except Nice , Dave raps towards the end of Barrel Of A Gun : "Don't push me cause I'm close to the edge / I'm trying not to lose my head" which is from a song called 'The Message' by Grandmaster Flash and the Furious Five. When webmaster Daniel "BRAT" Barassi jokingly said on Instagram that he was taking credit for the inspiration for this line (as he is an avid fan of producing mash-ups, which can be heard on his website bratproductions.com ), Dave's wife Jennifer Sklias (jokingly or seriously) commented "Naw... they was my idea!"
  • During the waving part of Never Let Me Down Again (excepting the S.I.R. Studios rehearsal of course), Dave Gahan picks up a large shooter gun on the catwalk with which he fires off T-shirts. The only concerts where he has not done this are Amsterdam , Antwerp , Ljubljana , Athens , Bratislava , Phoenix , Dublin , Manchester , Buenos Aires and Isle of Wight .

Depeche Mode’s Ongoing Global Spirit Tour Has Played to Over 2.3 Million Fans

Depeche Mode's Global Spirit Tour has raked in more than $187 million since launching a little more than a year ago.

By Bob Allen

Dave Gahan of Depeche Mode

Depeche Mode has recently kicked off the final stretch of North American dates on its Global Spirit world tour that has grossed more than $187 million since launching just over a year ago. $46 million of that total comes from concerts that have occurred since the beginning of 2018 on the English band’s treks through Europe and, most recently, Latin America. That gross from the first quarter of the year earns the tour the top slot on the most recent weekly tally of Hot Tours (see below).

The European jaunt earlier this year was booked in arenas through the end of February, but the tour’s March swing through Latin markets – set primarily in stadiums – produced the top grossers. Sold out stadium shows in Mexico City, Buenos Aires and Santiago are the tour’s top earners so far in 2018, led by Foro Sol in the Mexican capital city. The venue topped $7 million in revenue from a two-show stint on  March 11 and 13 . Venues in the other two cities hosted the tour for a single night, logging sales in the $4 million range.

Depeche Mode Prepares for Second Leg of U.S. Tour Following Success in Latin America

Depeche Mode began the world tour on May 5, 2017 in support of its 14 th  studio album  Spirit . The opening leg included shows set in both arenas and stadiums in European cities. The first North American leg followed, running from late August through the end of October, and the second European trek began on  Nov. 15 . After the current swing through North America wraps on  June 11 , the group will begin the tour’s final leg, playing festivals in Europe during June and July.

Even with two months remaining, the Global Spirit trek has already surpassed the $149 million take from the band’s previous touring effort: the Delta Machine world tour that included 99 headlining performances. Running from May 2013 until March of the following year, more than 1.9 million tickets were sold on three continents. The current tour has already drawn more than 2.3 million fans to 103 concerts, according to box office counts reported to Billboard.

In its inaugural year, the Global Spirit tour earned a slot on the list of Top 25 Tours of 2017 – ending the year ranked No. 5 based on $123 million earned during its first year on the road.

The Global Spirit Tour was a worldwide concert tour by English electronic music band Depeche Mode in support of the group's fourteenth studio album, Spirit . During the summer 2017, the band played to more than 3 million fans in total.

The tour found the band continuing their charity partnership with Swiss watchmaker Hublot, raising money and awareness for Charity: Water toward its mission of providing safe drinking water to everyone in the world. To promote their worldwide tour, Depeche Mode gave a promotional concert at the Funkhaus Berlin on March 17 in front of 1,000 fans and streamed live on the internet.

With 130 live shows, the Global Spirit Tour is Depeche Mode's longest tour. Previously, the longest one was the Touring the Angel, with 124 live shows.

Depeche Mode Plot North American ‘Global Spirit’ Fall Tour

By Kory Grow

UPDATE: Depeche Mode have announced the final North American leg of the tour. The new dates are below in bold.

Depeche Mode ‘s Global Spirit Tour will reach North American soil this fall, when the group kicks off a new leg of arena and amphitheater dates in Salt Lake City. Before then, though, they’ll be offering a taste of what the tour holds with a performance Wednesday night on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon .

Tickets for the tour, which wraps in Canada in October, will go on sale March 10th. The band is asking fans interested in pre-sale tickets to register on their website ; those tickets will be available on March 6th. The band reports that the European leg of their Global Spirit Tour has already sold more than 1.5 million tickets, with many shows sold out. It will announce dates for a Latin American leg soon.

The tour ties into the release of Spirit , the group’s first album in four years and 14th overall. Many of the songs on the album – including the recently released single “Where’s the Revolution?” – address a devolution in civility that they’ve seen around the world in recent years. “I wouldn’t call this a political album,” frontman Dave Gahan recently told Rolling Stone , “because I don’t listen to music in a political way. But it’s definitely about humanity, and our place in that.”

Gahan added that it was a sentiment reflected in the album title. “We called the album Spirit , because it’s like, ‘Where’s the spirit gone?’ or ‘Where’s the spirit in humanity?'” Gahan said. “We considered calling it Maelstrom – that was a bit too heavy metal.”

HUBLOT SPIRIT OF BIG BANG DEPECHE MODE

SOBB Depeche Mode

Designed in collaboration with Depeche Mode, the new Spirit of Big Bang Depeche Mode pays tribute to the British band’s latest album and world tour, Memento Mori, vouching to live fully in the present and reflect on the value of time. This concept is symbolised on the watch by a skull motif embellished with an hourglass.

Fourteen years have already passed since Hublot and Depeche Mode announced their first collaboration, dedicated to raising public awareness and funds for several environmental and humanitarian causes. Since then, this partnership has been renewed with each of the British band’s subsequent tours and has raised over USD $2.3 million for the Teenage Cancer Trust and charity:water.

In March 2023, Depeche Mode announced its big comeback with the release of Memento Mori , its 15th studio album, along with a worldwide concert tour. Still in collaboration with the band, which has sold over 100 million albums, Hublot is helping to raise funds and awareness for Conservation Collective, a global charity that unites a network of regional philanthropic foundations working to protect, conserve and restore natura l environments. Thanks to Depeche Mode & Hublot funding, the first round of projects tackling plastic pollution at the grassroots in 2023 supported seven impactful initiatives across seven countries, with three more rounds of funding set to empower even more positive change. The projects aim to turn the tide on plastic by driving locally led waste management, plastic-free and clean-up initiatives.

It was against this backdrop that Hublot and Depeche Mode teamed up again in Berlin, 11 years after their first joint event in the German capital, to release a new limited-edition watch: The Spirit of Big Bang Depeche Mode. The Spirit of Big Bang’s signature tonneau shape is designed with Hublot’s iconic All Black aesthetic. Created in collaboration with Depeche Mode, the design combines the skull motif—an emblem seen in the video announcing the band’s return—with an hourglass to symbolise the passage of time. The centre of the dial is filled with small black ceramic spheres that symbolically flow back and forth as the wrist moves, conveying the concept of Memento Mori. This Latin phrase, meaning ‘remember you must die’, is intended to prompt reflection on the transience of life. Alongside the dial, the initials DM, the British band’s logo, appear at 6 o’clock. The indices take the form of pyramid-shaped studs, a motif echoed on the black ceramic bezel.

Measuring 42 mm, the barrel-shaped case is made of sand-blasted and polished black ceramic. It houses a self-winding HUB1710_SD calibre movement with a 50-hour power reserve. Each of the Spirit of Big Bang Depeche Mode comes with two straps, which are easily interchangeable thanks to the patented One Click system. The first is made from recycled materials and Velcro, in line with Conservation Collective’s plastic pollution initiatives. The second, in black rubber, closes with a black titanium folding clasp. It includes the pyramid-shaped studs already featured on the bezel and dial, creating an exceptionally ‘rock’ vibe.

Each of the 100 pieces in this limited edition will come in a special box containing a wonderful surprise: a 10” vinyl single of Depeche Mode’s Wagging Tongue, only available as part of this package, and produced using green energy and recycled PVC!

Depeche mode

“Memento Mori encourages us to be more mindful of just how fragile our existence is. This is why joining forces once again with our trusted friends at Hublot makes so much sense. Together, we can raise public awareness of environmental issues and support Conservation Collective in their efforts to protect our planet and life in all its forms.”

Martin Gore

MEMBER OF DEPECHE MODE

“For almost 14 years now, Hublot has been working alongside Depeche Mode to protect Humankind and our environment. Memento Mori makes us conscious of the passing of time. This is something that we, as watchmakers, are naturally aware of. This is a serious issue, but one that we approach with joy and energy inspired by the music of Depeche Mode.””

Ricardo Guadalupe

“We are delighted and hugely grateful to have the support of Hublot and Depeche Mode as we work to turbocharge environmental restoration efforts in a growing list of places around the world. Conservation Collective now comprises twenty locally focused environment foundations, and each one of them is providing support to grassroots organisations which are creating cascading positive change in each of those places. This new funding from Hublot and Depeche Mode is a gamechanger for these efforts.”
