The booking was easy with Agoda. But communication between us & the reservation staff was a total pain in the neck. We almost cancel. It’s 1/10. Seriously! But!!! All this mess was wiped out as we experienced a pampering staycation in SETIR. We are luxury travelers as always! Hassle-free from airport transfer (coaster & speedboat), roundtrip at 4,000 pesos/person. To the resort, there were 2 other guests, while way back it was a complete private speedboat trip. Lovely! The accommodation, duplex villa, is super spacious, clean, toiletries are high quality (similar to what we use at home), room scent —jasmine peony (maybe)—which I like. There’s a coffee machine (bring your own ground coffee), an electric kettle, coffee/tea, cups & saucers, glasses (but no wine glasses), clean towels. The beddings are all Canadian, it’s a brand that I prefer due to its comfy texture & form—also like at home. The veranda with 2 big chairs is my favorite spot to view the sunrise. The villas are sit on the water so it feels really good. The food is delicious—not salty nor oily. The price of food is just alright. But for the careful spenders—you might find it a little high. But honestly I was surprised to only pay about 600 pesos/meal. Try all the 3 restaurants to enjoy various meals. For light eaters like me/us, a cup of rice is enough for two persons. The serving of food is also generous except cevichè. The Luna bar drinks are moderately priced, between 350-400 pesos per order. During the happy hour, there’s unlimited cocktail for only 999 pesos. The staff smile, greet & pay courtesy at all times. The buggy drivers are neat and courteous. I sometimes give small bills to say thank you—my own will, not mandatory. I don’t normally carry cash as we live in a digital world, debit/credit card is so handy. So, I don’t have much loss bills with me. Better carry 20, 50, 100 pesos if you plan to tip the staff who are working hard. The whole island is a resort. It takes about an hour by speedboat f
Worth staying! ”
My sister and I booked last January 17-19, 2023. We were able to enjoy our stay especially the amazing service from all the staff. We had to book roundtrip airport transfer directly from their website to enjoy our stay. Our arrival was very smooth and they have airport lounge at Busuanga, where we enjoyed our complimentary brewed coffee. What’s amazing part? We asked them for resort tour (look for Kuya Rod). They will pick you up right next to your villa. We snorkeled and had fish feeding (look for Kuya Jay). You can use bike for free!!! They also have 9 different restaurants where you can make advance order. We had the best stay ever!!! Will come back soon with our family!
Best way to end our honeymoon”
SETIR is an island where you'll feel like VIPs. They offer wide range of activities but of course for a price, but even though without any activity bookings, there are tons to do within the island - kayaks, paddle boards, bikes, snorkeling, etc. which are free. Of course anyone will enjoy the 2 white beaches and the infinity pool, which are best enjoyed during sunrise/sunsets. We even enjoyed riding buggy to roam around the island - even the boat transfers to/from SETIR were fun for us. And if you don't feel like doing anything, staying in the villa would still feel special. The rooms are well maintained and the view and the sounds of the waves underneath are simply breathtaking. There are varieties of restaurants around but some were open for a limited time due to ongoing renovations. It is not a surprise that food are generally pricey, but the big servings make it worth the price. The location of buffet breakfast is really strategic - not only the stomach will be full but also your eyes. All the staff we met were very warm and accommodating. Everyone who sees you will greet you as well. You can feel that most of them are happy to serve you (not just doing their jobs for the sake of doing it). This was one of the things that made us feel like real VIPs. There are a lot of instagrammable spots that are worth the OOTDs. I would definitely recommend staying in this resort. We'll surely be back some time.
Serene experience!”
Awesome place, quiet & clean, friendly & accommodating staff, BEAUTIFUL resort. We stayed for 4 nights, 2 nights at Sirakan & 2 nights at Studio villa. Sirakan will offer you a lavish island room experience. It's like you're on top of an aquarium since you can see corals & fish right under you. We pretty much stayed in the room the entire time to make every $ worth it. The balcony bathtub & indoor glass bottom floor are the 2 most unique features of this room. Only cons are it faces the sunrise (not sunset) and you either have to have a buggy pick you up or drop you off or grab a (free) bike just so you can get around the island since this room is far from everything. The studio villa was nice too, though, and the fact that it faces the sunset makes it worth it. This one's cons goes to the bathroom and bed (hard) which needs some upgrade. The rest of the room features was pretty good such as complete bar/coffee, vanity, full length sliding doors. Staff communicated the best via WhatsApp. They were one text away. If there's any cons I could think of, they are the island hopping tours and lack of convenience store. In my opinion the tour A (6,000php/person) was a a rip off. Though they provide lunch, snorkeling gear and towels, I think it should cost half of the price. The other one is the lack of convenience store. If you have any need other than food (like feminine/hygiene/self-care items) there's no way to get them. They ask 15,000php boat rental just to get you to Coron town. So you're pretty much stuck in this island throughout your time so just make sure you have everything you need before you come here.
Best resort and Amazing staff”
We enjoyed staying at this beautiful paradise resort. The staff was awesome kind and helpful. Everything was there and we can’t ask for more. The restaurants and bars are 5 stars!! This was the last stop place on our trip before we head back to the US, so it was an Amazing Experience. I’ve been telling people that they should visit this resort. Thank you very much SETIR!! We will be back ❤️

Sunlight Eco Tourism Island Resort Palawan (A SETIR Review)
Yugi, our 6-year old syoti, excited knowing that we were going to Palawan, exclaimed, “Yehey, our first trip during Covid!” He would always express his desire to go to a hotel or to a resort because he wanted to play in the swimming pool and the beach if possible.
We were also curious about the famed Sunlight Ecotourism Island Resort located in Culion, Palawan. Pre-pandemic, it was popular with Chinese tourists. During our trip, I would say occupancy was 50% Filipino and 50% locally-based Chinese.
Sharing with you our review of our Sunlight experience during the Chinese New Year and Valentines 2021 long weekend…

The entire family had to take the COVID-19 RT-PCR Test provided by Kairos that provides home service testing within Metro Manila.
It was the boys’ first time to do the swab test, and we all agreed it was a bit painful and uncomfortable. It was also tedious filling up the form for each member of the family (6 times). We got the results 24 hours after.
One cool thing about Sunlight is that they also have their own Sunlight Air so you are guaranteed that the travel bubble trip from Manila to Palawan is safe from point to point.
(No quarantine is needed because you can’t even go down and wander around Coron town.)
You can book an all-in package at Klook: Sunlight Eco Tourism Island Resort Coron Exclusive Travel Bubble Package (Fly + Stay + Dine)
Inclusive of: • Flight, accommodation, food and dining vouchers (IMPORTANT: Displayed prices are on a per person basis.) • 3D2N Duplex Villa accommodation at Sunlight Eco Tourism Island Resort (SETIR) • Roundtrip flight transfers from Manila to Busuanga and vice versa • Roundtrip land and boat transfers from Busuanga Airport to SETIR and vice versa • Use of private lounge in Metro Manila terminal • Daily breakfast at Sun Café • PHP6,500 food and beverage voucher per villa • One-time spa treatment at the Sanctuary Spa (for every adult package booked) • One-time lunch or dinner by the beach
Sirakan Villa is for honeymooners and comes with a glass flooring and jacuzzi overlooking the sea. There are 9 villas. Best to choose the one facing the sunset or choose the sunrise side for added privacy.
We stayed in a duplex villa with two side by side rooms connected by the balcony facing the sea. Each room is good for 2 adults and you can add an extra bed for a fee. The toilet amenities are eco-friendly and the room is sanitized well each day.
(Tip: You can book the 2 Bedroom Villa with a living room connecting the two rooms.)
There are 99 villas and 9 honeymoon villas in the entire island operating at 50% capacity to make sure that your stay is safe. Choose the water villas facing the sunset to have a good vantage point of the magic hour from your room.
There are two beaches to enjoy with enough social distancing from other guests. Beach 1 is the sunrise beach with wider white sand area, and it’s also the jump off point for the water activities. Best to hang out here after breakfast.
Our favorite is Beach 2 because of the sunset but it has lesser quality sand—not as white and smooth as that in Beach 1. The pool is conveniently located between Beaches 1 and 2 so that you can literally hop from one beach to another and avoid the crowd whenever possible.
Manila ✈️ Busuanga 🚐 Coron ⛴ Culion (Palawan 6 hours Travel Bubble Trip)
Sunlight Air has a private terminal at INAEC D gate and you’ll feel safe because of the strict safety protocols from check in to boarding and the thin crowd.
Here are some reminders for your flight…
Before you travel, keep the following documents handy at all times: • Health Declaration Form for Sunlight Air • Negative RT PCR test (2 printed copies) with Official Receipts • Booking Confirmation • Traze Contact Tracing Mobile App • Coron QR Code
Please also be reminded to fill out the health declaration of Coron Tourism. You may click this link https://travel.corontourism.ph/register to create an account, upload the file in screenshot and get the QR Code. (Strictly No QR Code No Entry in Busuanga)
Guide for QR : • RT-PCR – screenshot of rt pcr result only. • Confirm accommodation – screenshot of booking confirmation • Confirmed itinerary – screenshot of booking confirmation (1st page only) • Roundtrip ticket – screenshot of booking confirmation (1st page only)
DOT accredited hotels and Tours -> please select TRANSIT TO CULION
Make sure to be there 2 hours before the flight. So if the flight to Busuanga is scheduled at 11:45am, make sure to be there at 9:45am and leave your house an hour before in anticipation of the traffic.
The flight usually departs on time and arrives in Busuanga after 1 hour and 15 minutes. Make sure to teach your kids to wear their masks and face shields properly during the flight. There’s no snack, and only bottled water is served during the flight.
It takes another hour to check out of the airport and travel via van to Sunlight Hotel in Coron town. Remember you are not allowed to go around the town. Make sure that the van can only accommodate 6-7 people for social distancing. This setup was perfect for our family.
From Sunlight Hotel in Coron, we had a 20-minute breather for restroom or snack break before boarding the speed boat for a 45-minute cruise going to the island.
In total, it takes 6 hours to go from your house to the island with a combination of plane, van and speed boat rides. You spend half of the day traveling across the travel bubble tunnel wholly operated by the Sunlight group. Our family felt very safe because all the safety protocols were in place.
Beach, Pool and Sunsets
We loved hanging out at the beach during sunset and playing around with the water guns and the water bed at Beach 2.
When we asked the kids what they loved the most, the little ones said it was sitting in front of the buggy going around the resort.
This was our favorite private lunch spot near the mezzanine area, with access to the kiddie pool, where we can order a la carte from the menu.
We also loved hanging out at the beach 1 area after breakfast because of the wider beach area and better sand quality, perfect for getting lots of Vitamin D in the morning.
We tried to avoid other guests, taking advantage of the swimming pool when it was empty and using the place to hop between the two beach areas.
Sunset time offers a good photo opportunity in the infinity pool.
Palawan sunsets are memorable. Don’t miss enjoying every moment.
Yes, there is a decent 9Mbps internet provided by Globe so you can enjoy working from anywhere in the comforts of your water villa.
Food Strategy ?
Baon for the half-day trip . The 6-hour travel was quite long for the little ones. Make sure to eat a good breakfast, pack some snacks and bring your own water for the half-day trip.
Arrival Buffet Lunch . We arrived at around 3pm. You would be forced to eat at the buffet, getting so hungry from the trip. It was a bit expensive especially when you’re with kids and only the nilagang beef ribs and pizza were good.
(Tip: If I will have to do it again, I’ll pre-order our a la carte lunch so that it will be ready when we arrive or we will pre-order from Poco Deli.)
Avoid the Outdoor Buffet . There are no acrylic dividers to protect the buffet food from people’s saliva when they talk or, on some occasions, when they sneeze or cough near the buffet. Order a la carte when possible, and try to eat away from the crowds.
Order the Pizza . The kids loved their pizza but it was sold out on the first night. So pre-order all the pizza you want during your stay.
Sunlight Eco Tourism Island Resort A La Carte Menu: Mains – Chicken Dishes, Pork Dishes, Beef dishes, Vegetable, Fresh Catch Appetizer, Salad, Soup, Sizzling Plate, Sandwiches, Pizza, Pasta, Noodles .
We tried most of the items in the a la carte menu and the only thing we liked was the Beef Salpicao. Lower your expectations when it comes to food at the island resort.
Buffet breakfast was decent with a selection of appetizers, bread, meats, noodle soup and egg and waffle service. We felt safe eating with all the necessary safety protocols in place like the acrylic barriers and the service team serving the food.
Final Thoughts
We enjoyed our Sunlight Eco Tourism Resort experience and we felt safe bringing all our boys because most of the safety protocols were in place throughout the travel bubble from Manila to Culion, Palawan. Always be alert, watch out for other guests who are coughing or showing symptoms and avoid crowded venues like lounges.
The water villas were clean, using eco-friendly water bottles and toiletries. Plus, there’s an amazing sunset each day, taking all your worries away. Get the Sirakan Villas if you are going on a honeymoon escape from the kids, or the Duplex or 2-Bedroom Villas if you are going with the entire family. The internet works and you can safely work from Sunlight if you need to.
Best to lower your expectations on the food and enjoy the outdoors and sunsets. I wish they would improve the health protocols in the outdoor buffets.
Budget about Php25,000/head for a 3D/2N stay with the kids inclusive of flight, accommodation and food.

Hello! I booked the Duplex Villa, as it was the only accommodation left available for more than 2 people. I’d like to ask how much you paid for the extra beds?

How sustainability transformed tourism in Coron
- June 11, 2020
Docking into the clear waters of Club Paradise Palawan, a sustainable resort sheltered on the 19-hectare Dimakya Island, one would see a school of matambaka fish protruding like a mass of dark matter from the warm, turquoise waters. Matambaka, a local variety of fish, says one of the locals working for the resort, is also consumed as food. Several kilometers away in Kabilawan Bay, Tagbanua tribesmen bob like seals, scouring a small search area to catch octopus using improvised jigs that serve as booby traps. Cards, a Coron native, shares that after snagging as much as 15 kilos of octopus, the Tagbanuas sell them in the town market.
Foraging for whatever is readily available in the environment has always been the natural order of things but the growing developments and dependence on tourism have rewritten daily life for locals, even the Tagabanuans themselves.
At the foot of the hill prior to the hike up the secluded Kayangan Lake where several Tagbanuan families co-exist, life has taken a sharp turn since tourists were allowed. Palawan has long been considered an apex destination in the Philippines , but it wasn’t until 2001 that Coron’s restrained beauty was opened to tourists by the Tagbanua tribe, the ancestral owners of the land and the surrounding waters. Magnificent stretches of white coastlines, limestone cliffs, and immaculately clean lakes, some of which are closed off to the public, are perhaps the island’s greatest attributes. Much of the income they generate these days come from fees collected from visitors looking to explore ancient attractions within the Tagbanuan territory; these payments in turn fund community projects and afford Tagbanuans access to education .
Their lifestyle has also been influenced by the outside world in that foraging for native crops —like korot, which can be toxic when not prepared properly—fishing, and harvesting cashew nuts and seaweed have been gradually supplanted by trips to the town market for more convenient options. That’s not to say that old customs don’t exist anymore. They still do, and the elder council, tourism sector and many advocacy groups are working hard to strike a balance between fulfilling tourist demands and safeguarding the place’s cultural context.
Sustainable tourism is apparent here and it’s a style that locals are diligently perfecting and owning. Since the proliferation of resorts, they have found more viable employment prospects to support their families that traditional livelihood otherwise couldn’t. “Malaking tulong talaga ‘yung mga resorts,” echoes Cards. ‶Kasi kapag may bagyo, wala kang saka, mahirap magbenta.”
Coron’s tourism method has much to do with the middle path it walks between maintaining what exists and promoting what is favorable to their economy. Somewhere between the potential for financial growth and the contained threat of commercialization, several key figures have crafted a subtly deconstructed approach to find the right headspace for cultural preservation and socio-economic opportunities.
One of them is sixth-generation Coron citizen Al Linsangan III, a pioneer in Coron’s eco-tourism initiative and executive director of the Coron and Calamianes Cultural Conservation Networks, Inc. Inspired by author and adviser Susan Santos de Cardenas, The Coron Initiative “wants to establish a green print for sustainable tourism,” says Linsangan, stressing that the United Nations-backed enterprise enables frontliners like hoteliers, tour operators, guides, and restaurateurs to adopt a framework that is beneficial to Coron and its inhabitants.
Even before the ideology was coined, Linsangan had already developed a fascination for environmental sustainability. “Ang nag-ignite sa akin ay mga illegal fishermen. Instead na isumbong or ipakulong sila, we involve them in tourism.”
“Nung nag-guide ako way back in 2000, pag-alis namin sa destinations, sinisira naman ng mga illegal fishermen. Sabi ko, after several years, ubos na ‘to. Ubos na ‘yung fish, wala pa kaming turismo. So I immersed myself in the community for two years and lived with the Tagbanuas. There was a transformation after two years. It started with two families, then it became five, 18, 40, and now we’re 168 families,” says Linsangan, who eventually formed the Sustainable Calamianes Eco-Tourism Cooperative. The advent of preservationist practices has instilled confidence among the nearly 50,000 residents (based on the 2010 census) as well as the stakeholders that have invested in integrating the community within the ecosystem.
“The boats used for tours are a social enterprise . One boat represents seven to nine families so the income generated by that single vessel is shared across those families,” says Al Linsangan.
“For example, the boats used for tours are a social enterprise . One boat represents seven to nine families so the income generated by that single vessel is shared across those families,” says Linsangan. Annie Dela Cruz of Barangay Quezon, Busuanga is another example. On occasion, she visits Club Paradise Palawan to peddle the fresh catch of the day including a variety of fish , prawns and crabs harvested every 21 days from the mangroves lining their community.
But with the abundance of fresh ingredients, Coron cuisine remains to be fragmented compared to the illustrious food scene that has reinvented success for regions like Bicol and Ilocos . Coron has a clutch of homegrown dishes like manla , where a scorpion-like crustacean caught in mud is cooked with coconut milk, taro, ginger and water spinach or kangkong according to Linsangan. Yet the influx of foreign tourists might have something to do with why restaurants opt to offer familiar menus.
On the surface, Coron’s challenge is to protect its old-world character from the homogenizing effects of commercialization; beyond that, reinforcing classic Coron cuisine will undoubtedly add a new dimension to the town’s charm. Its future in sustainable tourism, however, depends on being able to come to terms with pressing issues and awakening opportunities. Still, Coron’s voice remains captivatingly commanding in its frailty, soulful despite undergoing a period of transition.
