  • Technology and Gaming Technology is a fact of life for 21st century learners. Voyager prides itself on teaching our students to think critically and creatively, to overcome the difficulties that may arise. Providing the ability to learn a new language through coding will give them an invaluable toolset when they enter the workforce. Exposing students to different coding languages, robotics equipment and other forms of technology will cultivate productive members of society capable of joining the workforce in higher paying positions. Gaming and technology are more similar than they are different. Through gaming, we expose students to the notion that any one move can have limitless potential and can create a significant impact. Gameschooling skills fosters critical and creative thought, but also work to help students navigate difficult social situations.
  • The Arts By establishing education in the arts, we are able to provide children with a tangible resource for managing big feelings. Not only can we guide them through an education in emotional intelligence through art, but we are able to solve for one of the biggest problems facing incoming kindergartners: readiness. Contra Costa County is currently faced with having 1 in 4 preschool students who are not ready for kindergarten. With the numbers on the rise, the biggest indicator of failing kindergarten resides in fine motor development. By utilizing the arts daily, children are able to develop their fine motor skills enabling them to tackle more difficult concepts like writing and reading which opens the door to lifelong learning.
  • History Voyager will be working along side members of our community to give our students dynamic history lessons that demonstrate the importance of perspective. In formulating our own curiculum based on diverse and historically significant individuals and project based learning, students will receive an education that enables them to see beyond themselves and into a different period of time. It gives them an opportunity to make real decisions and see the outcome of their choices, but most importantly it helps them to see that just one person, perhaps someone just like them, can have a significant impact on their community and their world.
  • Wellness (Physical Education Redesigned) Physical Education at Voyager will offer dynamic lessons with activities that range from hiking and yoga to the more traditional soccer and basketball. Students will be engaged with a teacher who promotes physical fitness, but who also teaches them about how to make healthy choices and explains concepts important to health education such as how to take a pulse. PE programing will also combine with elements of occupational therapy (strength training activities) and physical therapy to create a well-rounded class that aims to better serve all of our students. The goal of the physical education program at Voyager does not solely rest on passing the Presidential Test of Physical Fitness, but is instead to create students who will lead a lifelong goal of making healthful choices. Studies have shown that when children can regularly connect with nature, they are more resilient and have higher self- esteem, concentration, cognitive development, cooperation and flexibility. Being on the edge of town and on several acres, gives us the ability to access nature and all the wonder that pertains to it.
  • Math and Science Reading books and completing worksheets are perhaps the most tedious aspects of math and science class. There are some benefits, but there are even more when you provide real-life experiences, real-world applications and use a multi-sensory approach to teaching. By combining these three elements, we can reach all of our students. By offering a few different ways to learn the material and showing its importance in our world, students can see how these two subjects impact them directly. With this understanding, we equip students with a growth mindset that allows them to navigate more challenging information as they learn new material. One of the most difficult pieces of feeling motivated to do well in school comes from the question of if what you are doing matters to your larger picture. At Voyager, we will supply our students with opportunities to gain real experiences from forming a company to marketing products and services, to experiencing factories and building upon life skills. Students will spend their academic careers not wondering why they have to complete a task, but asking and answering questions to help in better navigating to find real world solutions.
  • Global Studies Voyager’s Global Studies course will be implemented throughout the child’s academic career with our school. This course offers an inside look at cultures around the world. While our students are learning about geography and are exploring the intricate details of culture, they will also hear from students in these areas. Voyager is actively developing a network of progressive schools around the world. This will provide our students with a chance to experience another child’s culture uniquely, helping them to become more aware of our interconnectedness.
  • Literacy Literacy will be explored and learned through multi-sensory approaches. We understand that students can best learn to read once they have mastered writing the alphabet. We understand that students best learn to identify letters with the use of visual, auditory and kinesthetic components. Literacy will be a course that explores the senses and aims to create students who value reading and writing. Voyager will also provide unique opportunities for students to read to the animals located in our on-site animal sanctuary. Mini-pigs, donkeys, cats and goats all enjoy the various stories they can read to them.
  • Ongoing Nature Study By altering the status quo and providing students with weekly opportunities to reach beyond the textbook and experience the magic that exists in nature. Through meticulously planned outdoor adventures, students will grow in the understanding that the value of land and that which inhabits it are far more than monetary. Many positive interactions in nature will help in building memories that will serve these students throughout their lives- from identifying plant and animal life to discerning between animal tracks and scat, tracking migratory patterns, tracking identified species in differing locations and bearing witness to the incredible force that is mother nature.

Everybody safe, no threat found during Durham charter school lockdown

Josh Chapin Image

DURHAM, N.C. (WTVD) -- Durham Police Department found no threat at a Durham charter school after receiving reports of an active shooter. The school is no longer on lockdown, police said Friday shortly before 1:45 p.m.

Investigators said they responded to Excelsior Classical Academy in the 4100 block of North Roxboro Street after receiving the emergency call around 11:15 a.m. When they got to the school, they searched and found nothing out of the ordinary.

"They were here almost immediately. Officers went in. We train," Durham Police Chief Patrice Andrews said. "Unfortunately, this is what we have to train for. This is the world we are in now and our teams mobilize quickly."

The school was on lockdown as police did a "secondary active search" of the school.

voyager academy lockdown

"At this point, we do not believe there was an active shooter at the building," Andrews said. "We do not have any evidence nor have we found any firearms or any evidence of a firearm being fired."

School administrators sent a notification to parents afternoon to alert them that students could be picked up after police finished their sweep of the school. The school said buses would run as usual and there would be no after-school programs Friday.

Lindsey Williams, the parent of a fourth- ad eighth-grader at the school, said she was on the way there for a meeting when her older child texted her.

"When I pulled here, the police were blocking all the entrances and at that point, we didn't have any communication from the schools so I'm relying on my son to give me information," Williams said. "Panic, panic and then I'm past this entrance and try and go to another one and then there were ambulances staged and then you really are panicking because why there are ambulances. It's like a frenzy trying to figure out what's going on, are your children safe? Panic."

Excelsior opened in the 2015-2016 school year with classes from kindergarten to fourth grade. The school has been adding a new grade each year and will have its first graduating class in 2024.

Pacific Avenue was closed between North Roxboro and Capitol Street and the entrance to Excelsior Classical Academy was closed while police investigated.

Kelly Knight, a parent from Oxford, said her daughter called her and said she didn't feel safe.

Knight has a 6-year-old and a 15-year-old at the school.

"It doesn't make the terror any less when you have your children in there, you don't know that it's nothing until you get them back," Knight said. "This is the world we live in, no this is the country we live in now ... we do our best to keep our kids safe and that's the best you can do. Social media is good and bad."

Chief Andrews added: "This is the worst nightmare for us."

Star Trek's New Starfleet Academy Show Is Set In the Far Future to Give Its Heroes Hope

T he series that started Star Trek’s streaming era came to an end this week , but as ever with the franchise’s current moment , all eyes are already on what’s next. But Starfleet Academy, the next new Trek show , won’t actually be making that much of a temporal jump from Discovery, staying in the 32nd century setting that show established midway through its run.

This makes sense for a lot of reasons—Star Trek already has a bunch of current and recently concluded series all operating in the familiar couple of decades established by TNG, DS9 , and Voyager, around the last couple of decades of the 24th century, and the early years of the 25th. Strange New Worlds is already playing in the franchise’s other popular era, the mid 23rd century, the time of the original Star Trek, so it makes sense now that Discovery is over that there’s going to be a new show that plays about in the time period it’s leaving behind. There’s also the fact that Discovery’s ending leaves a ton of potential on the table for the 32nd century setting to be explored, as the de facto furthest frontier Star Trek has explored so far—so why not keep exploring it with new material?

But Star Trek architect Alex Kurtzman actually has a third, just as good reason—one personal but one also important to Star Trek’s core ideals. “As the father of a 17-year-old boy, I see what my son is feeling as he looks at the world and to his future. I see the uncertainty; I see all the things we took for granted as given are not certainties for him,” Kurtzman recently told the L.A. Times , explaining why Academy will continue on where Discovery left off chronologically speaking. “I see him recognizing he’s inheriting an enormous mess to clean up and it’s going to be on his generation to figure out how to do that, and that’s a lot to ask of a kid. My thinking was, if we set Starfleet Academy in the halcyon days of the Federation where everything was fine, it’s not going to speak to what kids are going through right now. It’ll be a nice fantasy, but it’s not really going to be authentic.”

“What’ll be authentic is to set it in the timeline where this is the first class back after over 100 years, and they are coming into a world that is only beginning to recover from a cataclysm—which was the Burn, as established on Star Trek: Discovery, where the Federation was greatly diminished,” Kurtzman continued. “So they’re the first who’ll inherit, who’ll re-inherit, the task of exploration as a primary goal, because there just wasn’t room for that during the Burn—everybody was playing defense.”

And... yeah, that’s actually a really good idea! If Starfleet Academy was set during the period of Star Trek that is, currently, where the bulk of its material is set—that hey day of the late 24th century—there is paradoxically an idea that the wider universe is in an incredibly secure place in terms of where the Federation and Starfleet are at, and where their primary goals remain optimistically exploratory, and both that it’s on the precipice of absolute disaster. That time period is eventually rocked by the outbreak of the Dominion War , a war that ultimately not just sees Academy students pressed into conflict unlike anything seen in centuries, but also sees the Academy itself attacked and heavily damaged when Earth is assaulted by the Breen —the trauma of which we’ve already seen teased and played out in characters like Beckett Mariner on Lower Decks , who was a young student at the Academy in that time.

It’s a very familiar era to audiences, yes, but if you want to make a show about the a new generation of explorers being trained to go out and boldly go, it’s one fraught with trying to have navigate that either there is this horrifying event perpetually on the horizon, or that horrifying event has happened, and already fundamentally altered the lives and headspaces of these young characters. “The Burn” from Discovery that Kurtzman mentions as a backdrop to Academy—an explosive event that rendered the vast majority of warp travel all-but-impossible for over a century, radically altering the state of interstellar politics, trade, and communication—is a similarly world-changing event for its young characters to have faced, but it’s not necessarily as brutally cataclysmic as something like the Dominion War was. It’s a point of diminishment for Starfleet, but not its near-destruction, and using that as a jumping off point for Starfleet Academy gives its incoming class of future Star Trek heroes a rare chance to look to their futures with hope you wouldn’t otherwise get treading familiar temporal ground.

The Unique Burial of a Child of Early Scythian Time at the Cemetery of Saryg-Bulun (Tuva)

<< Previous page

Pages:  379-406

In 1988, the Tuvan Archaeological Expedition (led by M. E. Kilunovskaya and V. A. Semenov) discovered a unique burial of the early Iron Age at Saryg-Bulun in Central Tuva. There are two burial mounds of the Aldy-Bel culture dated by 7th century BC. Within the barrows, which adjoined one another, forming a figure-of-eight, there were discovered 7 burials, from which a representative collection of artifacts was recovered. Burial 5 was the most unique, it was found in a coffin made of a larch trunk, with a tightly closed lid. Due to the preservative properties of larch and lack of air access, the coffin contained a well-preserved mummy of a child with an accompanying set of grave goods. The interred individual retained the skin on his face and had a leather headdress painted with red pigment and a coat, sewn from jerboa fur. The coat was belted with a leather belt with bronze ornaments and buckles. Besides that, a leather quiver with arrows with the shafts decorated with painted ornaments, fully preserved battle pick and a bow were buried in the coffin. Unexpectedly, the full-genomic analysis, showed that the individual was female. This fact opens a new aspect in the study of the social history of the Scythian society and perhaps brings us back to the myth of the Amazons, discussed by Herodotus. Of course, this discovery is unique in its preservation for the Scythian culture of Tuva and requires careful study and conservation.

Keywords: Tuva, Early Iron Age, early Scythian period, Aldy-Bel culture, barrow, burial in the coffin, mummy, full genome sequencing, aDNA

Savvino-storozhevsky monastery and museum.

Savvino-Storozhevsky Monastery and Museum

Zvenigorod's most famous sight is the Savvino-Storozhevsky Monastery, which was founded in 1398 by the monk Savva from the Troitse-Sergieva Lavra, at the invitation and with the support of Prince Yury Dmitrievich of Zvenigorod. Savva was later canonised as St Sabbas (Savva) of Storozhev. The monastery late flourished under the reign of Tsar Alexis, who chose the monastery as his family church and often went on pilgrimage there and made lots of donations to it. Most of the monastery’s buildings date from this time. The monastery is heavily fortified with thick walls and six towers, the most impressive of which is the Krasny Tower which also serves as the eastern entrance. The monastery was closed in 1918 and only reopened in 1995. In 1998 Patriarch Alexius II took part in a service to return the relics of St Sabbas to the monastery. Today the monastery has the status of a stauropegic monastery, which is second in status to a lavra. In addition to being a working monastery, it also holds the Zvenigorod Historical, Architectural and Art Museum.

Belfry and Neighbouring Churches

voyager academy lockdown

Located near the main entrance is the monastery's belfry which is perhaps the calling card of the monastery due to its uniqueness. It was built in the 1650s and the St Sergius of Radonezh’s Church was opened on the middle tier in the mid-17th century, although it was originally dedicated to the Trinity. The belfry's 35-tonne Great Bladgovestny Bell fell in 1941 and was only restored and returned in 2003. Attached to the belfry is a large refectory and the Transfiguration Church, both of which were built on the orders of Tsar Alexis in the 1650s.

voyager academy lockdown

To the left of the belfry is another, smaller, refectory which is attached to the Trinity Gate-Church, which was also constructed in the 1650s on the orders of Tsar Alexis who made it his own family church. The church is elaborately decorated with colourful trims and underneath the archway is a beautiful 19th century fresco.

Nativity of Virgin Mary Cathedral

voyager academy lockdown

The Nativity of Virgin Mary Cathedral is the oldest building in the monastery and among the oldest buildings in the Moscow Region. It was built between 1404 and 1405 during the lifetime of St Sabbas and using the funds of Prince Yury of Zvenigorod. The white-stone cathedral is a standard four-pillar design with a single golden dome. After the death of St Sabbas he was interred in the cathedral and a new altar dedicated to him was added.

voyager academy lockdown

Under the reign of Tsar Alexis the cathedral was decorated with frescoes by Stepan Ryazanets, some of which remain today. Tsar Alexis also presented the cathedral with a five-tier iconostasis, the top row of icons have been preserved.

Tsaritsa's Chambers

voyager academy lockdown

The Nativity of Virgin Mary Cathedral is located between the Tsaritsa's Chambers of the left and the Palace of Tsar Alexis on the right. The Tsaritsa's Chambers were built in the mid-17th century for the wife of Tsar Alexey - Tsaritsa Maria Ilinichna Miloskavskaya. The design of the building is influenced by the ancient Russian architectural style. Is prettier than the Tsar's chambers opposite, being red in colour with elaborately decorated window frames and entrance.

voyager academy lockdown

At present the Tsaritsa's Chambers houses the Zvenigorod Historical, Architectural and Art Museum. Among its displays is an accurate recreation of the interior of a noble lady's chambers including furniture, decorations and a decorated tiled oven, and an exhibition on the history of Zvenigorod and the monastery.

Palace of Tsar Alexis

voyager academy lockdown

The Palace of Tsar Alexis was built in the 1650s and is now one of the best surviving examples of non-religious architecture of that era. It was built especially for Tsar Alexis who often visited the monastery on religious pilgrimages. Its most striking feature is its pretty row of nine chimney spouts which resemble towers.
