Nanaimo BC cruise port

Region West Coast USA and Canada

Local Time 2024-05-02 08:54

Port Nanaimo BC cruise ship schedule shows timetable calendars of all arrival and departure dates by month. The port's schedule lists all ships (in links) with cruises going to or leaving from Nanaimo BC, Vancouver Island Canada. To see the full itineraries (ports of call dates and arrival / departure times) and their lowest rates – just follow the corresponding ship-link.

Nanaimo is a port city located on Vancouver Island (BC Canada). Aka "Harbour City", Nanaimo was previously known as "Hub City" attributing to its central location on the island. The city has a total area of approx 91 km2 (35 mi2) and population over 92,000. Nanaimo is approx 40 mi (65 km) from Vancouver BC (across Strait of Georgia), approx 100 mi (160 km) north of Victoria BC (Vancouver Island) and approx 195 mi (315 km) north of Seattle WA (USA).

Port Nanaimo

Nanaimo Port Authority (NPA) operates inner Harbour Basin marina which provides mooring for smaller ships. WE Mills Landing and Marina provides mooring for larger vessels. Nanaimo's cruising season runs between early May and early October.

In 2016, port's tonnage volumes increased by 61% over 2015. The number of vessels handling raw logs at Assembly Wharf doubled, and the number of handled containers increased by 21%. The port handles by 25 to 30 cruise ship visits per season, with economic impact on the local economy around USD 150,000.

In 2017, NPA (port authority) applied for federal funding to expand Duke Point terminal. The project is to double the facility's size to handle larger vessels and to expand its paved area to handle more cargo.

In 2016, the port was visited by over 3200 recreational boats (mainly from the USA), so the development plans may include upgrading the yacht marina. In 2017 were handled 6 cruise ship calls (economic impact USD 2,87 million) with nearly 10,400 passengers plus 4,450 crew.

In early-August 2018, the seaport signed a 25-year lease agreement (until 2043) with WCMRC (Western Canada Marine Response Corporation) for the corporation's new oil spill response base serving operations on Vancouver Island. By the deal, the Port leased nearly 130,000 ft2 (12080 m2) of land and water areas at Nanaimo Harbour. WCMRC's new base's expected cost is ~USD 10 million. Here will be homeported 15 response vessels with up to 35 full-time personnel. The 1976-founded WCMRC (Transport Canada-certified company) protects British Columbia's coastal waters from marine spills.

In 2018, in Port Nanaimo was constructed Vehicle Processing Centre (VPC) - a 60,000 ft2 (5570 m2) covered parking facility for European automobiles. The storage houses the import cars prior to their delivery to BC Canadian dealerships for sale. Towards this project, the Canadian government committed CAD 6,3 million. Around 200 jobs were created during the construction period plus ~100 permanent jobs following the inauguration in April 2019. New car terminal's annual capacity is between 10,000-12,000 units. The first vessel that used VPC was the 2009-built vehicle carrier Tranquil Ace (IMO 9561253) which docked at Port Nanaimo on March 8, 2019, to deliver Mercedes cars.

Local economy's original driver was coal mining, supplanted in the early 1960s by the forestry industry following the MacMillan Bloedel pulp mill construction (1958). Today, the pulp mill injects into the local economy over USD 0,5 million per day.

Here is hosted the annual Nanaimo Marine Festival, part of which is the bathtub race. It starts in Nanaimo Harbour downtown, then goes around Entrance Island and continues northwest to Winchelsea Islands to finish back in the harbor. Until the 1990s, the race ran from Nanaimo to Vancouver .

A signature feature of the city is its layout design with all main streets radiating out from the harbor - like the spokes of a wagon wheel. A fun fact is that "Nanaimo Bar" (no-bake cookie bar with custard filling) is a Canadian dessert named after the city. The best spot to find the signature dessert is Dinghy Dock Pub. Other tourist attractions include Newcastle Island Marine Park, City Quarter (shopping mall), Harbourfront walkway, Arts District, cannon firing and bagpipe performances daily at the Bastion(the last remaining wooden Hudson's Bay Company bastion in North America).

Vancouver Island has around 2140 mi (3440 km) long coastline. The island's total population is nearing 800,000.

Cruising season 2019 started on June 16th with the superyacht Silver Muse ( Silversea ). Nanaimo's average daily passenger spending ashore is ~CAD 80 (USD 60) per person. At the cruise terminal, passengers are greeted by professionally trained ambassadors (from Nanaimo Hospitality Association) who also advise the disembarking tourists on local attractions and touring options. On June 8th, Port Nanaimo coordinated the "World Oceans Day" - harbour cleanup program conducted by volunteers along the city's waterfront (the coastal area between Maffeo-Sutton Park and Nanaimo Yacht Club). Throughout the day were also organized educational activities, kids-themed entertainment, cultural presentations.

After a 5-year hiatus (due to the COVID crisis) since 2019, in 2024, the Port had scheduled/booked for berthing two cruise ships - Seabourn Odyssey (May 9th) and Oceania Regatta (August 26th).

Nanaimo BC cruise terminal

Port Nanaimo has 2 terminal facilities - at Assembly Wharf (close to downtown) and at Duke Point (serving cargo shipping operations). The port provides free of charge golf carts for transportation of passengers with disabilities between the berthed ship and the cruise terminal. Disemabrking passengers are assisted by tourism counselors, providing information on morning / afternoon scheduled activities. Free of charge Wi-Fi is provided for the crew. Also complimentary is port's bus shuttle service for cruise ship passengers - from the terminal through downtown, Old City Quarter and Maffeo-Sutton Park.

In 2011 was inaugurated an USD 24 million cruise terminal at Assembly Wharf. The facility provides Canada Border Services Agency clearance. Port Nanaimo's cruise ship terminal is named "Welcome Centre". The facility was opened on May 6, 2011. Among the larger ship operators often booking the port are Princess, NCL Norwegian, Celebrity, RCI Royal Caribbean.

The cruise terminal has 1 berth and can accommodate some of the world's largest passenger vessels, among which were Celebrity Solstice (in 2014) and Explorer of the Sea (in 2016). Near the cruise pier is located Nanaimo Heliport (operated by Helijet helicopter landing pad).

The cruise port provides golf cart shuttles and complete handicap accessibility. From the terminal depart tour buses to Central Vancouver Island and also City Shuttles (free of charge). The shuttle service is throughout the day and includes 4 stops along the route to downtown Nanaimo, Old Town and Maffeo-Sutton Park (overlooking theharbour).

Nanaimo is directly linked with Vancouver via BC Ferries, served by dedicated terminals in Departure Bay and Duke Point. Smaller ferries offer regularly scheduled service to and from several smaller islands. The city's airport YCD provides regularly (delete) daily flights to the USA and (delete as incorrect) mainland locations including Vancouver YVR and Calgary YYC.  The world’s largest sea plane airline offers daily flights to the mainland and YVR.

Port of vancouver on course for record breaking cruise season in 2024.

Early estimates  are for another record year for cruise passenger visits to the award-winning Canada Place cruise terminal in Vancouver , as collaborative efforts to improve sustainability progress

VANCOUVER, BC , March 8, 2024 /CNW/ - The first cruise ship of the season, the Disney Wonder, arrives in Vancouver on Monday, March 11—kicking off what is expected to be another record season for the industry locally. There are 329 cruise ship visits currently scheduled for the Canada Place cruise terminal at the Port of Vancouver between March 11 and October 29, 2024 .

This could mean a record 1.27 million passengers would travel through the Canada Place cruise terminal at the Port of Vancouver in 2024, about 2% more than last year's record.

"We expect 2024 to be another strong season for the award-winning Canada Place cruise terminal, as we solidify Vancouver as a premier homeport servicing the popular Alaska market," said Mandy Chan , manager of cruise services at the Vancouver Fraser Port Authority, the federal agency mandated to enable Canada's trade through the Port of Vancouver . "Cruise is an important part of Vancouver's vibrant tourism sector that supports countless local hospitality and tourism businesses and jobs. We look forward to working alongside our cruise line and industry partners to ensure another successful season."

Cruise ships deployed during the winter in other parts of the world return to the West Coast in March and April to prepare for the Alaska season. On March 11 , the Disney Wonder will embark passengers heading to San Diego before coming back in May to start its weekly itinerary from Vancouver to Alaska .

Vancouver has been a homeport for Alaska cruises for more than 30 years, acting as the base for one-way and round-trip cruises through the Inside Passage. As a homeport destination, the Vancouver cruise industry injects an average of almost $3 million into the local economy for each ship visit, supports nearly 7,000 jobs across Canada and $300 million in wages, and contributes $840 million to Canada's GDP.

"A key focus right now is continuing to work in partnership on initiatives to protect our environment and it is great to see our cruise line partners eager to embrace programs such as using shore power to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and slowing their ships while travelling through critical local habitat of at-risk whales as part of ECHO," said Chan. "The allure of an Alaska cruise is the natural beauty of the journey, and we know more can be done to create a sustainable cruise market while enabling its growth. We want to thank everyone for the collaborative progress made so far and look forward to continuing this important work in 2024."

The suite of environmental programs and initiatives for cruise at the Port of Vancouver includes:

Shore power , which offers shore power-enabled visiting ships to shut down their diesel-powered auxiliary engines and plug into B.C.'s low-emission, hydro-powered electrical grid. It has helped reduce port-related greenhouse gas emissions by more than 38,000 tonnes since being introduced at the Port of Vancouver in 2009, the equivalent of taking about 8,500 gasoline-powered cars off the road for one year.

ECHO Program , a world-leading program that encourages cruise ships and other large commercial ships to slow down or move away from key areas of critical habitat for at-risk whales such as the southern resident killer whales. The cruise industry has actively participated in the program since 2017, with cruise ship operators slowing down on 83% of all transits through key areas of southern resident killer whale critical habitat in Haro Strait , Boundary Pass, and at Swiftsure Bank in 2023.

EcoAction Program , which provides discounts of up to 75% off harbour dues for ships that are cleaner and quieter, including by using alternative, low-emission fuels or plugging into shore power.

Pacific Northwest to Alaska Green Corridor, which will be the world's first cruise-led, zero-emission green corridor and connect Washington , Vancouver and Alaska . The green corridor is being advanced in partnership with global cruise lines, ports, governments and environmental groups.

Discharge restrictions that prohibit cruise ships from discharging scrubber wash water while at berth or at anchor within the Port of Vancouver , in addition to restrictions on black and greywater

"As another record cruise season gets underway in Vancouver , I want to acknowledge the hard work of all our partners who have made our city's return to cruise after the pandemic such a success," said Chan. "This includes cruise lines, Canada Place cruise terminal manager SSA Marine, the International Longshore and Warehouse Union, and our partners at Canada Border Services Agency and US Customs and Border Protection. The success of Vancouver's cruise industry year after year is a direct result of the dedication and collaboration of all those involved."

Day-to-day operations at the Canada Place cruise terminal are managed on the port authority's behalf by SSA Marine, previously known as CERES Terminals Canada.

Highlights for 2024 cruise season

The first ship of the season, the Disney Wonder , will arrive at the Canada Place cruise terminal west berth at 7:00 a.m. on Monday, March 11, 2024 . The next ship of the 2024 season will be the Norwegian Bliss arriving overnight on April 4 . Full 2024 details are available in the cruise schedule .

The last cruise ship of the season, the Norwegian Jewel , will depart Canada Place on Tuesday, October 29, 2024

The following five ships will visit Canada Place at the Port of Vancouver in 2024 for the first time : Explora I, Silver Nova, Celebrity Edge, Pacific World, Hanseatic Spirit

The Canada Place cruise terminal at the Port of Vancouver welcomes the following cruise lines in 2024: Celebrity Cruises, Crystael Cruises, Cunard, Disney Cruise, Explora Journeys, Hapag-Lloyd Cruises, Holland America, Hurtigruten, Norwegian Cruise, NYK Cruises, Oceania Cruises, Peace Boat, Ponant, Princess, Regent Seven Seas, Royal Caribbean, Seabourn, Silversea Cruises, Victoria Cruises, Viking Ocean Cruises

In 2023, nearly 75% of cruise calls were shore power-enabled, compared to 50% in 2019. Demand for shore power has steadily increased since 2009, when the Port of Vancouver became the first port in Canada and the third in the world to introduce shore power for cruise ships.

About the Vancouver Fraser Port Authority and the Port of Vancouver

The Vancouver Fraser Port Authority is the federal agency responsible for the shared stewardship of the Port of Vancouver . Like all Canada Port Authorities, we are accountable to the federal minister of transport, and operate pursuant to the Canada Marine Act with a mandate to enable Canada's trade through the Port of Vancouver , while protecting the environment and considering local communities. The port authority is structured as a non-share corporation, is financially self-sufficient and does not rely on tax dollars for operations. Our revenues come from port terminals and tenants who lease port lands, and from port users who pay various fees such as harbour dues. Profits are reinvested in port infrastructure. The port authority oversees the use of port land and water, which includes more than 16,000 hectares of water, over 1,500 hectares of land, and approximately 350 kilometres of shoreline. Located on the southwest coast of British Columbia in Canada , the Port of Vancouver extends from Roberts Bank and the Fraser River up to and including Burrard Inlet, bordering 16 municipalities and intersecting the traditional territories and treaty lands of more than 35 Coast Salish Indigenous groups. The Port of Vancouver is Canada's largest port, and the third largest in North America by tonnes of cargo. Enabling the trade of approximately $305 billion in goods with between 140 and 170 countries each year, port activities sustain 115,300 jobs, $7 billion in wages, and $11.9 billion in GDP across Canada .

This New ‘Standby’ Cruise Fare Costs Just $49 Per Day—but Is It Worth It?

Would you be willing to wait at a port city with your bags packed, hoping to board a cruise at the last minute, all in order to secure one of the cheapest cruise deals out there? Holland America—with its industry-first standby fare offerings—is betting yes.

The line’s new Standby List Program allows travelers to put their names on a list of prospective passengers to be confirmed for a voyage if there are unsold rooms on the ship. Standby cruisers only pay $49 a day, but they receive as little as two days’ notice to get ready for the trip.

For flexible travelers, the scheme offers the possibility of huge savings. Here’s everything cruisers should know about sailing on standby.

How do the fares work?

To get on the standby list, travelers can select an itinerary on Holland America's list of standby-eligible voyages and call 877-724-5425 to join. (You can also have your travel advisor add you to the standby list on your behalf.)

Once you're on the list, you'll be charged $49 per person per day (not including taxes, fees and port expenses, which can cost several hundred dollars more). If you’re not selected for the cruise, you’ll receive a full refund.

When the week of the sailing arrives, the cruise line will start notifying standby passengers whether they made the cut. Guests are confirmed for their sailings in the order they were added to the standby list, so signing up early counts. Would-be passengers should expect to hear their status between seven to two days before the voyage’s departure.

Travelers who aren’t confirmed within two days of the sailing’s departure receive an immediate refund. Truly spontaneous travelers can choose to cut things even closer with a more nail-biting option: They can opt to remain on the standby list all the way up until 90 minutes before departure to see if there’s a no-show. If that doesn't work out, they’ll still get a full refund.

The deal could offer major savings to group travelers who have a bit of flexibility this summer, as the third and fourth guests in a stateroom can travel nearly for free—they would just be on the hook for taxes and fees. But young families are not eligible for cruising standby, as the fares are only available for travelers ages 21 and older. Since it would be a major gamble to travel long distances for an unconfirmed trip, the standby option makes the most sense for people who live in or near eligible ports like Vancouver , Seattle , San Diego , Fort Lauderdale , Boston , Montreal , or Quebec .

How can travelers take advantage?

In 2024, the bulk of standby fares that Holland America is offering are for Alaskan voyages departing Seattle, Whittier, and Vancouver, as well as New England and Eastern Canada voyages departing from Boston, Montreal, and Quebec City.

There are also a handful of transatlantic sailings departing from Fort Lauderdale, Florida, including an extended six-week sailing in November that meanders through dozens of Mediterranean ports in Italy, Portugal, Spain, Morocco, and Egypt, to name a few. Most of the dates for the standby itineraries stretch from May through September, with a few options in October and November as well.

It all sounds appealing, but there are a few factors travelers should keep in mind. “With this program, you've got to be extremely flexible in all aspects of your trip,” says Tanner Callais, founder of cruise travel advice site Cruzely . “Some of these cruises sail for extended periods of time, including up to 42 days,” which is the duration of that lengthy Mediterranean sailing. “You also don't know what sort of cabin you'll receive,” he says. “If you're someone that has to have a balcony room, then this might not be for you.

The type of cabin could, in fact, be a deal breaker for certain travelers. Holland America says it charges standby guests for an interior stateroom, a space as small as 143 square feet with no windows. But travelers could be assigned any category of room ranging up to a verandah stateroom, which ranges from 228 to 405 square feet with enough outdoor space to fit two deck chairs. However, it’s all based on availability.

“Travelers who want to benefit from a standby fare should keep in mind that once confirmed, Holland America Line assigns their room,” says Rob Clabbers, founder and president of the agency Q Cruise + Travel . “While that might result in savings, it means travelers may end up in the last remaining and likely less preferred location—above a theater or night club [or] all the way forward or aft. While this may work for some, it is definitely not recommended for those who fear seasickness, have mobility issues, would like to be close to travel companions, [or] want to be near or away from elevators,” he says.

Holland America Line also notes that these deals are intended for travelers who live within driving distance of the departure ports. “Booking a last-minute airline ticket could end up being more than the cost of the cruise,” Callais says. “That said, the fares are so low that if you have the flexibility, then it might be one of the best deals you'll ever find. This is especially the case if you're a solo traveler, as the double occupancy fare doesn't apply.”

Travelers will want to run the numbers on each voyage to ensure they’re receiving the best possible deal for enduring the hassle of last-minute arrangements. Some of the sailings do offer incredible value. “However, on other sailings, the savings are not nearly as great,” Clabbers says. “If you or your travel advisor do some research, you may very well find some sailings at fares that are similar or even lower than the $49 per day standby fare—and without the restrictions.”

For instance, it’s possible to book a seven-day Alaska sailing that departs June 9 on Holland America’s website, with prices for an inside room starting at $349 per person, plus $310 in taxes, fees, and port expenses. “You even get a $50 credit to spend on board per room, but the biggest advantage is that you can confirm this several weeks before sailing, so you can fine-tune your travel plans rather than have to wait until the very last minute,” says Clabbers.

One of the better deals would be the 42-day Mediterranean Cruise leaving from Fort Lauderdale in November. Booking that sailing outright, “you would pay $5,479 plus $435 in taxes, fees, and port expenses per person based on double occupancy for an Inside room,” Clabbers says. But, if you sail the itinerary on standby and get confirmed, “you would pay a total $2,058 per person plus taxes. Obviously that would be a good deal.”

Will other cruise lines start offering standby prices?

You might be wondering why a cruise line would offer fares as low as $49 a day. At the end of the day, more guests on board means ships generate more money. “Obviously, a cruise line wants to sail with every cabin filled to maximize revenue and efficiency of scale,” says Callais. “If a room sails empty, the cruise line is still using the same amount of fuel and paying the crew and captain the same wage.”

The majority of new ships break even at 50% occupancy, while older ships need 80% occupancy to hit that benchmark, according to Tom Baker , president of Cruise Center .

Carnival Corporation, which is Holland America’s parent company, saw an average revenue of $236 per passenger each cruise day in 2023, while its direct expenses per passenger was about $156 each day, according to Callais’ analysis of the company’s earnings report . But whereas most of a line’s expenses are fixed, there’s always more room to increase revenue with more passengers, who are bound to spend more on the ship. “In other words, even if this standby rate is less than the cruise line would make at a normal rate, it's still better to earn a little money from it than zero,” Callais says.

Although Holland America is the only major cruise line currently offering the standby fare, it could catch on at other companies if it brings in enough money. “Like most industries, cruise lines are constantly looking at competitors and seeing what they are offering or doing that might benefit their business,” Callais says. “If it works, it will get picked up by others.”

Regardless, it’s likely that standby offerings will stay limited to certain lines, as well as specific ports and times of year. “If the program trains too many passengers to just wait and cruise standby, then that could actually end up hurting the bottom line,” Callais says.

But for many travelers, planning and looking forward to a trip is half the fun: "Part of the joy of travel is the anticipation of the experience," says Clabbers.
