Adding Cruise Control 2015 Elantra

cruise control hyundai elantra 2016

  • Add to quote

I've got the base L model Elantra for 2015 (Canadian model). I only really need the car for commuting, so I opted for the low optioned model (plus it was on a heck of a deal two years ago when I bought it new). But, I do miss not having cruise control I've read that the new 2017 models can get cruise by simply buying the proper OEM switches from a place like eBay, which comes with the missing wire harness, and replace the switch and missing harness in the steering wheel. Has anyone tried this on a 2011-2016 MD Elantra? Some advertising on eBay state you'll have to get into the ECU to have it reprogrammed, but that doesn't sound like what the 2017+ models had to do. Thanks.

I'm not aware of anyone here who's tried or posted about this. What I can confirm is that you can add the steering wheel audio remote by simply installing the extension harness and switch. You would probably be the first to determine whether cruise control can be added the same way.

Thanks FL. I'll probably go ahead and order both set of switches (audio and cruise) along with the cables and see what happens. I'll post back when I find out, but ordering from overseas will take weeks for arrival. Sounds like a summer project now. Anyone else with insight, please post.

You shouldn't order from overseas. 11 12 13 14 15 HYUNDAI ELANTRA STEERING WHEEL AUDIO RADIO CRUISE CONTROL SWITCH | eBay http://www.ebay.com/itm/11-HYUNDAI-...ash=item4d51f3448a:g:EVcAAOSwA3dYc~vK&vxp=mtr http://www.ebay.com/itm/Hyundai-Ela...ash=item3f7903aa97:g:wQEAAOSw3mpXD86Y&vxp=mtr

It worked! I now have cruise It worked! I put in switches and gained cruise control, audio functions (volume, channel, mute and mode selection). Cruise works perfectly - disengages with brake and clutch as it should. Yes I ordered from S Korea off eBay (sorry forum won't let me post links or pictures but search for the user motorialkorea and the search 2014-2016 HYUNDAI AVANTE / ELANTRA OEM Audio Auto Cruise Switch + Wire 3pcs Set) My car is the ultra basic L model (no cruise, no air, no bluetooth, etc). But I ordered these steering wheel switches like all the other trim models have along with the wiring harness (make sure you get that too). Apparently there are three colour schemes (silver, dark grey and black). Mine is dark grey as I believe all 2014-2016 Elantra sedans are. GT may be black and I think 2013 and older are silver. There are youtube videos on working on the steering wheel, but this was the one I used and was handy: Google for this page which has a write up and video links: CLOCK SPRING REPLACEMENT HYUNDAI ELANTRA 2011-2016 Step 1: disconnect battery and wait a good 5-10 mins for the air bags to de-power (I waited an hour) 2: use a torx screwdriver or something the size of an average Philips that has a blunt type tip, instead of a screwdriver, so you can push in the three pins behind the steering wheel to release the airbag/horn cover. The last pin will pop out the whole thing down to your lap. 3: fold the airbag cover up over the steering wheel to get it out of the way or disconnect the wiring harness for it (see the video) 4: use a Philips to unscrew the switches from the sterling wheel (two in the front and one in the back for each switch set) 5: you'll need to gently pry the top of each switch from the little holding tab to release the top. There are also tabs at the bottom of the switch that you can't reach but gently pulling the whole switch will pull them off the steering wheel. In may case I had one set of switches on the right and a blank switch plate on the left, but they connect the same. 6: disconnect the wiring plugs 7: the plug on the clock spring will also pull out and it has an additional wire for the horn, pull it out too. 8: now the weird part. The wiring harness is routed behind the metal frame of the steering wheel. The wiring harness won't pull through nor can you put the newer (and bigger) harness in there. Two choices: pull the steering wheel off and you'll have access; like I did I just routed the new harness over and to the side of the metal frame so I can still get the airbag/horn cover back on. Just make sure you don't fell like any wiring is pinching. 9. reverse steps to reinstall. $100 and you have factory cruise and some audio functions. Next project is to get a GL or better radio so I can have Bluetooth functionality. Also may try to install AC, which the car is 'plumbed' for. There are kits from Hyundai, but I may try to find a wrecked car first. Enjoy.

That is great news. No air? Thought that was standard on all models?

cruise control hyundai elantra 2016

Not in Canada, I don't think ...

Yeah no AC on the super bare bones L model in Canada. Hot summer in Saskatchewan this year though, do miss AC.

Depends a bit on the model and package - and Canada has different options. For example, my car (Accent) is a 2016 and it had the popular equipment package and that added: - cruise - tilt and telescoping wheel - Steering wheel audio and bluetooth - Console storage - Heated mirrors for around $600. Would be hard to add that for less than that - unless I ONLY cared about Cruise Control. In 2017, they shook up the options a bit - The Style package with projector headlights and fog lights disappeared entirely, and my popular equipment package got folded into the Value package. I think that was around $1000 more (not bad) and got: - 16-inch alloys - Rear discs - Steering wheel audio and bluetooth and cruise - Console storage. It's subtle and I didn't notice some of the changes until I posted this, but ... - Other than the wheels and brakes - all of the style package options disappeared. - I couldn't get steering wheel audio and cruise (which I wanted) without getting 16-inch alloys (which I didn't). - Tilt wheel and heated mirrors (which I like) were no longer available at all.

in April 2015 I bought my L model Elantra (Canadian version) for $11,999, plus taxes. Yes Canadian dollars, so in USD back then that'd be $9600. See why I bought it? If I remember right, the next model up, GL, was $16,999 as the sale price then too, so I saved $5000 but lost ac, cruise, key fob, heated mirrors/seats, bluetooth and sirius XM. When I walked in and said, I'll take an L model, they told me we don't have one. Can you get one? Yes. Ok, I'll take one. Two weeks later it was in. For me, what I truly would have wanted out of those missing things was cruise and AC. So I've got cruise now (plus extra audio features on the steering wheel). If I get a replacement radio centre stack for $100 used, I can get bluetooth and Sirius (although I'd need an antenna for sat radio and a mic for full bluetooth hands free calling). I can still walk into Hyundai here in Canada and probably get AC installed for $2000, but I'm looking for a wrecked car that I can grab the pieces off of. Or one of those AC kits from Hyundai which were on sale at one point for $800 but I didn't know about it at the time and they are back up to $1500.

Thank you for sharing this. I was craving cruise control in my Canadian base model 2014 Elantra MY 5 speed. I ordered from KMP Trade on ebay and installed as you instructed above and it works great. I originally order the wrong wiring harness but then reordered the correct harness (non-heated wheel 56190 3X250). The philip screws on the back of the steering wheel to release the side pieces were pain to get the right angle and remove. Thanks again for saving me from buying and installing one of the after market Rostra ones. Did you ever replace your factory stereo? I'm thinking of doing that next.

off topic: I wonder if this type of procedure can be done for the addition of fog lights in a non fog light car?

Sorry for bumping an old thread. I am planning to add cruise control to my mid variant 2012 Hyundai elantra. Have ordered the controls and the wire but before removing the steering parts just wanted to make sure that there is no ECU upgrade required for this? Also can anyone provide an image or diagram of how to connect the wires within the steering wheel? Do we just connect the wire to the existing connector itself? Thank you for all the help ?

Sushantv, were you able to get crusie working? I'm looking at buying a 2013 Elantra GL and am considering adding cruise control.

interesting post CJ as I want to install cruise into our base Elantra also! You have PM

For the 2014-2016, the bluetooth regular radio also had an option for backup camera as well. I wired a 2014 radio in my 2013 and have posted ont his forum about how to do that along with a few diagrams. You'll have to run 4 wires from the trunk to the radio and also tap into the reverse signal (you can take that from the rear backup lights) but it a really nice feature. OEM camera is expensive though. I also added a regular bluetooth microphone to use the bluetooth function.

Dear friends I have added cruise control and Radio control in my Elantra 2014 MT but when I fix the cruise on 120 Kph speed didn't stay stable. Always little accelerate and drop again accelerate and drop 5 to 7 kph. Like I am pressing the gas and releasing. In 2nd condition if I On the cruise on 130 Kph the speed stay stable. I did engine tune-up, spark plugs changed, software updated but not solved the problem. Please need your help. Regards,

Thanks to this post added cruise control and volume buttons to my canadian Elantra 2016 L Manual (AC factory installed). Ordered the part from korean store as CJMJ mentioned and got delivery within 10 days to Montreal. (make sure you order one for non heated steering wheel) Removing airbag was easy, instruction is on Youtube. Spent some time to remove original harness that goes to my trip reset buttons on my steering wheel, but now i see I could've easily cut it, just wasn't sure if replacement will work. I didn't want to remove steering wheel for proper harness placement behind the metal frame, so I just left it on top of frame and airbag fitted back just fine. Hopefully it will not cause any problem. FYI, harness is symmetrical on both sides, so when originally assembled, had cruise control buttons controlling my stereo. It was a little not intuitive and had to twist the harness (connect white connectors to audio controls, and black connectors with the sticker to cruise). Went for a drive, pressed cruise and to my surprise green cruise control button appeared on the dash (was thinking that probably light will not be working). Haven't done any highway testing yes, but so far so good. Overall it is very easy task to do, and if instructions are followed should not take more than 30 minutes. Stereo buttons work except of phone and voice control buttons, obviously. . Therefore, thinking my next upgrade it to install double din stereo with carplay/androidauto. Already installed keyless entry with remote start.
