Day wise Itinerary

Day 1 : Arrival Njp Railway Station / (Ixb) Bagdogra Airport - Kalimpong

On arrival at NJP Railway Station / (IXB) Bagdogra Airport, (500Ft / 150Mts) will be met by our office Executive who will assist you to board your vehicle to Kalimpong (3937 Ft / 1200 Mts, 75 Kms / 03 Hrs). Check in and over night at Hotel.

Day 2 : Kalimpong

Here you do the sightseeing of Dello hills, Dr. Graham’s Home, Flower Nurseries, Nature Interpretation Center and Durbin Dara Hills & Jang-Dong-Palriffo Brang. Overnight at Hotel.

Day 3 : Kalimpong - Martam

After breakfast we drive to Martam (5500 Ft /1677 Mts, 100 Kms / 03 Hrs). Overnight at Hotel.

After breakfast, in the morning, start for excursion to Tshangu Lake – situated at a height of 12400Ft / 3780 Mts / 43Kms in 3Hrs one way, with an average depth of 50 ft. The cool water of the Lake is perfectly attuned with the scenic beauty around. Back to Gangtok and Overnight at Hotel.

Day 6 : Martam - Yangtey

After breakfast transfer to Yangtze (5500 Ft /1677 Mts, 135 Kms / 06 Hrs) Check In and Overnight at Resort.

After breakfast we drive to Yuksom (35 Kms / 02 Hrs) on way visit Khecheopalri Lake, it is one of the sacred Buddhist mountain lake and it is believed that whatever is wished in front of the lake comes true. Myth is that when a leaf falls on the placid clear water surface is picked by a bird. A further drive takes you to Yuksom (the meeting place of three monks) - the first capital of Sikkim. Day 8 : Yangtey - Kurseong

Facts about Kalimpong

At an altitude of 1250m, Kalimpong’s location is ideal for a pleasant , relaxed getaway. Its clement weather has made Kalimpong’s orchids and gladiole well renowned. Up to the early 1700s, the Kalimpong area was part of the Sikkim raja’s domain.In the early 18th century, the Bhutan king also took it over. In 1865, after the Anglo-Bhutan War , it was annexed to Darjeeling. Scottish Missionaries came here in the late 1800s. The town thrived as a wool trading center with Tibet till 1950s. Today it’s a quiet hill resort and a haven for retired people.

Rajabhatkhawa.

Tharpa Choling Gompa

This monastery belongs to the Yellow Hat (Gelugpa) sect of Tibetan Buddhism. Founded in 1937, it is the repository of old scriptures and docments.

Zong Dog Palri Fo Brang Gomapa

It was built in the mid-70s at Durpin Dara Hill and was consecrated by the Dalai Lama. The gompa is worth a visit for its impressive wall paintings in the prayer room, and a rare three-dimensional mandala upstairs. The mountain views are amazing from Durpin Dara Hill. Here the lofty mountain ridges stand, proud and imposing.

Flower Nurseries

Kalimpong is famous for its flowers and nurseries. The region produces 80% of India’s gladioli and is a significant orchid-growing area. Entire hillsides are blaze with colour during the season.

Sericulture Research Institute

At this institute silkworms are bred and silk is produced as well as herbs and plants. Locate on the road to Darjeeling, the institute can be visited between 9.30 am and 4 pm.

Dr. Graham’s Home

Dr Grahams Homes is a complex for orphans and other deprived children which was founded in 1900 on the lower slopes of Deolo Hill. The chapel above the school dates from 1925 and features beautiful stained-glass windows. Tourists can also visit the fine turn-of-the-century school building. From the school building, it is a further 40 minute walk to the summit of Deolo Hill, where there is a Tourist Bungalow and one can enjoy fine views of Kalimpong from here.

Nature Interpretation Centre

Located on Rinkingpong Road, this centre consists of a number of well-organized dioramas, which depict the effects of human activity on the environment. The centre is open to visitors from Friday to Wednesday from 10 am to 4 pm.

Lava & Kaffer

Lava, situated 30 km east of Kalimpong, is a small village with a Kagyupa gompa. A good time to pay a visit to this town is Tuesday, which happens to be market day. One can also see the summit of Kangchenjunga from Kaffer and is best viewed at sunrise.

Durpin Dara

Kalimpong arts & craft centre.

Situated in the heart of town, this institute produces and sells a wide variety of handicrafts including wall scrolls, masks, jewelry and other artifacts. It was founded in 1897 by Mrs. Catherine Graham with the objective to promote and propagate local handicrafts as well as provide employment opportunities to locals.

Thongsa Gumpa

This monastery is of Bhutanese origin and built around 1692. It is the oldest in Kalimpong.The original structure was destroyed in the inter-clan wars before the British arrived.

Catholic Church

The Catholic Church, the largest church in the Kalimpong area, is a revered religious attraction. The church, built during the British rule in 1890, is constructed under the supervision of the British architect Hardy from Edinburgh. This church was open to public for offering prayers in November 1891 after a religious consecration. The architectural style of the church is the one following the western style. This church benefits the local Roman Catholic populace and has strong influence in the social and cultural activities of the region. The church attracts thousands of devotees all through the year.

Crookety House

Where Helena Roerich, A Russian herbologist and healer came to live with her son Yuri, the Director of the Uruswati. ResearchInstitute, in the year 1947 till her death on 5th April 1955. Helena was the wife of the celebrated Nicholas Roerich, the great Russian Artist, Philosopher and a writer. Helena wrote a number of books including Agni- Yoga. Her two sons Yuri and Suyatoslav Nikolayevich purchased some land on top of Durpin Hill and built a Stupa in the year 1970 in her memory. The Durpin Monastery next to the Stupa possesses copies of the published writings of Helena that were donated by the Agni-Yoga Society of New- York. Suyatoslav was married to Devika Rani, the first lady of silver screen and grand niece of Noble Laureate Rabindra Nath Tagore.

Macforlane Memorial Church

This imposing Gothic edific built on a hill is visible from many parts of Kalimpong town. The foundation stone was laid on 24th February 1890 by of Melrose. The church opened its door for public worship on 1st November 1891. The church is built in the memory of Reverend William Macforlane. He was a Scottish missionary who came to live in Kalimpong in 1879 and died on 15th February 1887 at the age of 47.

Mangal Dham

This temple is constructed in the memory of late Guru Shree Mangal Dasji and dedicated to Lord Krishna. Devotees, specially of Pranami Dharma from far away places come to this mandir for prayer and darshan. Services – Orphanage, School, Hospital and Publication of Literature.

Rated as the best and ultimate site in the kalimpong area, it is situated at the height of 8250 ft. About 10 kms away from lava and 28 kms away from Kalimpong. Jeepable roads reach until the last four Km(Up Hill), however electricity has not reached here giving it a medieval sort of charm. The local sherpas and Lepchas have built small cottage type tourist accommodation here. The Department of Tourism, DGHC is keenly promoting this area as a tourist destination. A magnificent view of Himalayas can be seen from here along with a view of the Nathula Pass, Tin Simana, Gangtok and Tibet Hills.

Local Weekly Market

Weekly Markets in Kalimpong which are open on Wednesdays and Saturdays are good places for the Soveigner hunter. Kalimpong offers and wide range of traditional handicrafts to the traveler. Wood carvings, embroidered items bags and purses with Tapestry work, copper ware, scrolls, Tibetan Jewellery and arte facts things that can be picked up from shops and markets across the town.

Pedong Monastery

Pedong Monastery, located at a distance of 20 km east of Kalimpong, is a monastery of Buddhist origin. Built by Bhutan's king in 1837, this monastery is located only a kilometre away from the historical Bhutanese fort of Damsang. This fort was an important landmark of the entire area before the town of Kalimpong came into existence. A large number of old paintings are displayed in this monastery.

Facts about Kurseong

Situated at an altitude of 1458 mts (4860ft.), Kurseong is 51 km from Siliguri and 30 km from Darjeeling. The word Kurseong means – the place of White Orchid. Because of its lower elevation, Kurseong enjoys milder and very healthy climate throughout the year. Kurseong is home to the costliest teas in the world. World famous Castleton, Ambotia and Makaibari tea gardens produce the most delicate aromas of all black teas known to mankind. It is the peace, serenity and the healthy climate that attracted many a great person to this place. Some of the famous poems and songs of Guru Rabindranath Tagore were composed in Kurseong. The magic painter, Abanindranath Tagore and great composer Atul Prasad Sen got inspiration for some of their famous works around Kurseong. Sister Nivedita, the great disciple of Swami Vivekananda made Kurseong her home. It is learnt that Mark Twain spent some time in Kurseong in 1885, Fazlul Haque the Prime Minister of undivided Bengal also stayed here. Netaji Subash Chandra Bose was interned by the colonial government for a couple of months in 1936 in a house at Giddapahar near Kurseong.

Beautiful Point in Kurseong town to watch the panoramic view of Siliguri plains and hills. During summer season, in the evening, one can sit at the place and watch the evening lights of Siliguri town. Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose Museum and N S C Bose Institute of Asiatic Studies, hosted in the house of his elder brother, Sarat Chandra Bose, are situated at the Giddhapahar Area. Netaji was interned in this house by the British Govt. in the late thirties. The house now displays photocopies of the exchange of letters between Netaji and his would be wife, Ms. Emilie, many rare photographs of his Indian National Army (INA), other memorabilia of the Indian Freedom Movement and a few personal belongings of Netaji and the Bose Family.

A walk or ride through the forest of Cryptomaria Japonica on the road, now called Aranya Sarani, leads to the vast open meadows at Chimney. The curious name of the place is reminiscent of the days, when there was a Bungalow here on the only road (Old Military Road) leading to Darjeeling. A long, dilapidated chimney, standing all alone, is the only remnant of the bungalow now.

Tea Estates

Kurseong is home to the costliest teas in the world. World famous Castleton, Ambotia and Makaibari tea gardens produce the most delicate aromas of all black teas known to mankind. Teas grown on the misty heights of Darjeeling, popularly known as the ‘Champagne of Tea’ are famous world over for their exquisite taste. The premium Darjeeling teas are mild in character and have distinctive natural fruity flavors. The different steps in Tea manufacture can be seen in the factories of the tea estates at Kurseong.

Facts about Mirik

Mirik-a nest in the hills is West Bengal’s one of the hill resort at an altitude of 1767 metres with its own special charms – 49 km. From Darjeeling and 52 km. From Siliguri. 1.25 km. Long lake is fed by perennial streams. A floating fountain in the middle of the lake is a joy for ever and very often you may find the glory of Kanchenjungha reflected in the lake waters. A rich forest with thousands of Cryptomaria-Japanica trees clothe the slopes on the west. A 3.5 km. zig-zag footwalk takes you along the lake – a sleek foot bridge connects the garden on the east with the woods on the west. Alone or in company, you are sure to enjoy a boat-ride in the lake.

Sight seeing in Mirik

The beautiful 1.25 km. long lake is the most attractive spot of the Mirik Tourism Project. The depth of the lake water varies from a minimum of 3 ft. to maximum of 26 ft. The walks on the 3.5 km. long promenade around the lake is a fascinating one. The 80 ft. long arch-type overbridge across the lake is a wonderful engineering skill of the project. Arrangements of fishing in the lake is to be implemented soon. Boating facility is also available in the lake.

Kawlay Dara

For fabulous view of the plains as well as mountains. Beautiful view of sunrise and sunset can also be seen.

Another observatory point for stupendous landscape view.

An ideal picnic spot. It is the source of drinking water to the residents of the Mirik Tea Estates. There are eight tea gardens in Mirik area. Thurbo T.E., one of the best tea-estates, is only 2 kms. from the lake. The factory may be visited with the permission of the manager.

Orange orchards

About two kilometers from Mirik, situated on the spur, one can seen beautiful orange orchards. Mirik is the largest supplier of orange in West Bengal. One can also have glimpse of the village life of hill areas.

Cardamom grove

Cardamom groves can be seen any where near the marshy land.

The famous Hindu-temples "Singha Devi Mandir" on the western bank of the lake.

Spring (March to April): it is considered a very good season with moderate temperature. This is the time for rhododendrons, orchids & various flowers. Snow will also be visible in some parts of the district.

Summer (May to Jun): as summer is not very hot. It draws the maximum no of tourist. Most of the regions of the region experience a temperature clime & it ranges from 18 0 C (60 0 F) to 28 0 C (82 0 F).

Monsoon (Jul to Mid Sep):  this is the time when the region gets maximum rainfall. Darjeeling is an ideal place to enjoy Indian monsoon with lush green tea gardens, hills along with beautiful clouds & fog. But heavy rain increases the risk of landslide during monsoon.

Autumn (Mid Sep to Nov):  Just after monsoon this is probably the best time to visit the region with clear sky & moderate temperature.  It is also a good time for photography.

Winter (Dec to Feb):   These are the coolest months & some part of this himalayan district  receives a snowfall. One can have snow in Sandakphu (32km from Darjeeling). Singalila range is a place with some of the highest snow capped peaks of the world.

The nearest operational airport in Bagdogra (IXB). Bagdogra to Darjeeling is 78km, Kalimpong  80km & Kurseong is approx 45km & Mirik 49km. Bagdogra is directly connected with Delhi, Kolkata, Guwahati & Bangkok & it is indirect connection all major cities in India.

The nearest railway station is New Jalpauguri (NJP) located near Siliguri. NJP is well connected with all major cities in India. NJP to Darjeeling  is 78km, Kalimpong  75km & kurseong is 45km.

Darjeelingdistrict is connected with Siliguri/Bagdogra/NJP through national National Highway 55 & 31A. North Bengal State transport Corporation (NBSTC) operates regular buses from Siliguri to various destinations like Darjeeling, Kalimpong, Mirik, Lava ect. History of Darjeeling

The British India, Nepal, Sikkim & Bhutan have their extensive presence in the rich history of Darjeeling. The kingdom of Sikkim ruled the hilly belt of Darjeeling until the early 19th century. During that period, the Nepalese Kingdom frequently occupied the plains around Siliguri. This settlement took place comprising of few villages of Lepcha and Kirati people. The Gurkhas of Nepal came victorious over The Chogyal of Sikkim on their repeated attempt to get the hold of the Himalayan Heaven. From 1780, the Gorkhas made several attempts to capture the entire region of Darjeeling. The Gurkhas had overrun Sikkim as far eastward as the Teesta River and had thwarted and attached the Terai, in the beginning of 19th century. On arrival of the British, the Gurkhas were been averted from capturing the whole of the northern frontier. The Gurkhas were been defeated in the Anglo-Gurkha war in 1814 that led to the signing of the Sugauli Treaty in 1815.As per the treaty, Nepal had to relinquish the territories which the Gurkhas had attached from the Chogyal of Sikkim to the British East India Company. The area was in between the Mechi River and the Teesta River. The British East India Company brought the Treaty of Titalia in 1817, through which it secured all the tracts of land of that region & restored the Chogyal of Sikkim and guaranteed his preeminence.

Initially The Darjeeling area was a “Non-Regulation District”. It was a scheme of British administration applicable to regions, economically underdeveloped. This status was not automatically applied to the other districts of rest of the country. The Darjeeling area was declared a “backward tract” in 1919. The Non-cooperation Movement proliferated through the tea belt of Darjeeling during the during the struggling days of the Indian independence movement. Darjeeling was merged with the state of West Bengal post-Independence. Darjeeling was established as a separate district consisting of three hill towns of Darjeeling, Kalimpong & Kurseong along with some parts of the Terai region. In the initial days, the ethnic Nepalese populated the hill part of the district & the Bengali refugees’ majorly domiciled the plain, post-partition of India. There was several public unrest since the initial days in the hills of Darjeeling to have the autonomous status of the ethnic Nepalese, which escalated to an alarming level in the sixth decade due to the unreceptive response by the state government. However one of their major demands tasted its success was the recognition of the Nepali language in 1961.

Day 1 - welcome to njp/ixb and transfer to rishop [3 hr 19 min (105.7 km) via rishi rd].

DAY 2 - RISHOP LOCAL SIGHTSEEING AND NIGHT STAY

In the second day of Darjeeling Kalimpong Tour , early morning visit Tiffin Dara :

Tiffin Dara - 3 Km uphill soft trek to Tiffin Dara through dense forest is a memorable experience for every tourist in Rishyap / Rishop. Guests from Kids to Sr. Citizen must visit this Tiffin Dara for a complete 360-degree view of Mr. Kanchanjunga, Mt.Kharg, Kokthang, Rathung, Kabroo (North, South, Dome, and Fourth), Talung, Pandim, Simvo, Narsingh, Siniolchu. The path towards the Tiffin Dara through the deep silent forest of Pine, Birch, Fir and Orchids following the chirps of birds will lead you there and the guest will forget all the tiredness when you reach Tiffin Dara.

After breakfast proceed towards Lolegaon a small tiny village, located in the Kalimpong Sub Division of Darjeeling District and one of the most beautiful places in the Darjeeling village tourism. One can cover this place on foot in barely couple of minutes. Tourist will be blessed by a giant statue of Lord Buddha in the Eco Tourism Park when you enter Lolegaon. Visit Canopywalk and Charkol from Lolegaon.

Canopy Walk - The most beautiful attraction of Lolegaon Tour is the canopy walk. it is a dense forest with a walking trail and part of the trees have been joined together to form a 75 meter long canopy. It is a lovely walk through the forests - the chirping birds, buzzing insects and fleeting butterflies, the shades of dark and light as the sun barely made its way thru the dense forests and above all the smell of the jungle - all will add an aroma to your entire trip and the revelations are slow and full of surprises, the idea behind a walk maybe to simply explore a trail, or maybe to get a feel of the jungle or to climb on top of the cllif you have been eyeing for long days. Dr Graham's Homes - This missionary school was set up by Dr. J A Graham in 1900 as an orphanage & school for the destitute Anglo Indian children. It is located on the way to Deolo Hills.

Deolo Hill - This is the major attraction in East Kalimpong. The tourism department has created an 8 Acre lush parkland with manicured flower gardens and several view points with breathtaking views of Kanchenjunga, Durpin hill, Kalimpong Township and the valley with rivers flowing through them.

Mangal Dham - A temple complex built in the memory of late Guruji Mangal Das ji and dedicated to Lord Krishna.

Durpin Monastery - This Tibetan monastery is located on the Durpin hill and hence such name. The actual name is Zang Dog Palri monastery. It was built in 1972 and has some rare Buddhist scripts that were brought here by Dalai Lama from Tibet. From the upper terrace of the monastery, you get magnificent views of Kalimpong town with Kanchenjunga in the background, the valley and the plains, Teesta & Reang rivers flowing down, and lovely tea estates of Peshoke area.
