The most precise and up-to-date information about Machu Picchu, including the new 2022 regulations, the best time to visit, entrance fees, maps and much more.

Whether by train or on foot along the classic Inca Trail, getting to Machu Picchu is part of the adventure on your trip to Peru. Most visitors opt for the 2 day Macchu Picchu tour, spending one night in Aguas Calientes, the small town located at the base of the mountain from the Inca ruins.

Machu Picchu New Circuits 2022 – 20223

Peru’s Ministry of Culture and the Peruvian government have established new rules this 2022 for all visitors traveling to Machu Picchu.

Be aware of these new regulations and the new circuits before booking your Machu Picchu tour and choose the circuit that best suits your interests.

Machu Picchu now offers you 4 different circuits to visit it, some of them combined with Huayna Picchu Mountain and Machu Picchu. The new circuits will allow you to visit all or only a part of the Inca city of Machu Picchu.

Why are there New Restrictions in Machu Picchu?

The reasons why the new circuits were established are to regulate the amount of visitors as well as to control the flow of traffic.

 Machu Picchu Circuit #01

Circuit number 1 lets you visit Machu Picchu from the highest part of the Inca city. This route goes through the guardian’s house (from where the postcard photo of Machu Picchu is taken). It then goes through the main entrance to the urban and agricultural sector, connecting with the temple of the sun and the temple of the mirrors. From there onto the water mirrors to the lower sector and then back to the way out.

Machu Picchu Circuit #02

This circuit is similar to the first one with the addition of the Intiwatana or Sundial, the Sacred Rock and the Temple of the Condor. This is the most complete tour and is highly recommended for those interested in exploring the citadel in full.

Machu Picchu Circuit #03

Visit the sector of the Qolqas (warehouses), terraces, the House of the Inca, the Water Fountains, and the Plaza Pisonae. This is the combined route with the visit to the Machu Picchu mountain. This circuit is specially suggested for people with limited mobility.

Machu Picchu Circuit #04

The route for circuit 4 is quite similar to the third circuit with the addition of the Sacred Rock, the qolqas or warehouses, the temple of the water mirrors, the temple of the Condor. This is the route that is combined with the Huayna Picchu Mountain hike. This circuit only passes through the lower sector, which leads to the back of the citadel.

Climate & Weather at Machu Picchu

As Machu Picchu is located at the intersection of the Andes and the Amazon, it has a mild subtropical climate which offers warm days and cooler nights. Humidity is also higher than in the Sacred Valley and Cusco.

The high season for Machu Picchu is from June, July, August to September. These months match the dry season in the region, when sunny conditions are more likely and are considered by many to be the best time to go to Machu Picchu.

The price for the Machu Picchu full day tour from Cusco is in shared service or small group. You will share the tour with other travelers. The schedules for this Machu Picchu tour from Cusco in small group are already established according to the itinerary.

The price for the Machu Picchu 1 day tour is in private service, just for you and your group, family or friends. The service is totally personalized, the itinerary is flexible according to your travel schedule.

Huayna Picchu

If you’re feeling adventurous and want to challenge yourself, you can opt to hike up Huayna Picchu, the mountain that towers over the citadel of Machu Picchu. The hike takes around 2-3 hours, and once you reach the summit, you’ll be rewarded with breathtaking views of Machu Picchu and the surrounding mountains.

Machu Picchu Mountain

Another option for those who want a bit more of a challenge is to hike up Machu Picchu Mountain. The trail is steep and can be strenuous, but the views from the top are truly awe-inspiring.

For those who want a more peaceful and relaxing experience, the Mandor Waterfall Walk Tour is a great option. You’ll walk for about an hour through lush vegetation to reach the 30-meter waterfall of Mandor, where you can cool off in the crisp pool.

The Sun Gate, or Intipunku in Quechua, is the entrance to Machu Picchu for those who have hiked the Inca Trail. If you haven’t hiked the trail, you can still visit the Sun Gate by hiking up from Machu Picchu. The hike takes around 2 hours and offers stunning views of the citadel.

Inca Bridge

This is a short hike that takes you to an Inca rope bridge that spans a deep canyon. It’s a thrilling experience to cross the bridge, and the views from the other side are breathtaking.

Important info

Once you start the tour, you must follow the circuit, and you won’t be able to go back.

Food and Water

You should bring your own food and water. You are not allowed to eat inside the site, but you can bring a small snack with you. Just be discreet and don’t litter. Also, bring your water in a reusable bottle because single-use plastic bottles are not allowed in Machu Picchu.

As the final point of our tour, we will explore Tambomachay , a resting place located 9 km from the city of Cusco. Also known as the "baths of the Inca" due to its water springs or popularly known as the "waters of eternal youth" due to the constancy of the flow of its waters. How to get to Machu Picchu from Cusco

' src=

Welcome to our guide on how to get to Machu Picchu from Cusco.

One of the new Seven Wonders of the World, Machu Picchu is often the reason many travelers visit South America (let alone just Peru). And having been here ourselves, the photos are nothing compared to when you actually summit these ruins in person .

In this guide we’ll discuss the various ways you can get to Machu Picchu from Cusco, as well as how safe the site is. We’ll also mention our own top hiking tips for when you make the journey yourself.

Machu Picchu Quick Summary:

  • 📍 Where is it: Southern Peru
  • 🗺 Difficulty Getting there: Moderate/Easy
  • ⏱ Time needed: 2+ Days
  • ☀️ Best Time to Visit: September/October, March/April

What's in this guide?

Our Quick Answer : There are many ways, however the most popular is by walking along the train-track to Aguascalientes. This is the best option for those who are short on time.

Where is Machu Picchu?

Although you’d think Machu Picchu is deep within the freezing Andean mountains, it’s actually located closer to the Amazon jungle basin.

As a result the climate here is warmer than that of Cusco and the Sacred Valley , meaning you won’t need to layer up so much.

Once in Peru you’ll first need to head to Cusco to reach Machu Picchu, which is roughly 66 km away. There are many daily flights from Lima that you can take, and those in nearby Arequipa, Puno or Nazca can easily take the bus.

Is Machu Picchu safe?

Machu Picchu is a pretty safe place. The site is heavily patrolled by both security and park rangers, and even the hike along the train-track is safe to walk alone.

trek to machu picchu

Once at the site you’ll need to follow the guidelines which are there to help you stay safe. We have written some tips on Machu Picchu safety tips so please read them first.

One other (and very important) thing to keep in mind, is the altitude. Machu Picchu is located at an altitude of 2430m , which may be difficult for some when hiking up. It’s best to take frequent breaks and drink lots of water.

Even better is to spend time in Cusco before (3399m) which will help your body to adjust. You can read more in our in-depth guide about preparing for high altitude hikes .

Where to catch the train from Cusco to Machu Picchu

The train to Machu Picchu is a really popular way of getting there, where you’ll pass by lots of stunning mountainous scenery and villages along the way.

sacred valley peru

There are several stops along the Sacred Valley which you can board on, including Poroy, Urubamba and Ollantaytambo . The last stop on the train ride is the town of Aguascalientes, which is just a short hike away from the ruins of Machu Picchu.

How long does the train from Cusco to Machu Picchu take?

If starting from the first stop of Poroy (which is just a 30 minute ride from Cusco), then the train will take roughly 3 hours to reach Aguascalientes .

aguascalientes peru

It’s definitely the quickest option of them all, and during the ride you can relax in the luxurious seats as you take in the natural scenery.

If you’re still unsure about going, then you can read more about whether Machu Picchu is worth visiting to see some of our justifications for embarking on this mammoth trek.

Machu Picchu from Cusco

There are also some incredible hiking experiences to reach Machu Picchu, which is better for the adventurists out there. Below we’ll cover your main options.

How to Hike to Machu Picchu on the Inca Trail

The Inca Trail is the most famous of the three, and the actual route and experience itself is often said to be more memorable than the actual ruins of Machu Picchu itself.

machu picchu without guide

Most routes take around 4 days to arrive, which is necessary given the high altitudes you’ll be hiking through (it’s not something you can rush).

We recommend this highly-rated Inca Trail Tour , where you’ll have all hiking equipment, food and hotel pick-up and drop-off included. The most impressive thing is the stunning scenery you’ll explore along the way, which ranges from snow-capped mountains to alpine lakes.

Here you’ll literally be walking the same path that the ancient Inca used to on their way through the mountains , which only adds to the surreal nature of it all. You’ll also visit many other ancient ruins on the route, including those of Sayacmarcs, Patallacta and Runkurakay.

How to Hike to Machu Picchu on the Salkantay Trek

Whilst the Inca trail is best for those who love remnants of past civilisations, the Salkantay Trek is by far the best option for those who want to get into the real wilderness on their way to Machu Picchu.

is machu picchu safe

Starting from Cusco we’ll visit a number of well-known sites including those of Laguna Humanatay and also Salkantay Mountain.

During your hikes through the remote landscapes you’ll see lots of wildlife such as Taruca and Coatis roaming freely, and even otters in the rivers too. You’ll reach Machu Picchu early on the fifth day, where you can enjoy the site when it’s at its most peaceful.

This 5 Day Salkantay Tour is one of the best options out there, which includes all meals, hiking equipment, accommodation as well as a stay in a 3-star hotel during your final evening in Aguascalientes. The Salkantay Trek is definitely the hardest of the three , so you’ll want to make sure you’re in good shape before embarking on this route.

How to hike to Machu Picchu on the Inca Jungle Trek

Lastly we have perhaps the least known route of the three, however it is a great one for those looking to spend more time hiking through lush rainforest . This multi-day tour lasts three days, and is relatively relaxed.

cusco itinerary backpacking machu picchu peru

Here we’ll depart from Cusco and begin exploring the Sacred Valley region, where we’ll get to raft down the Urubamba river.

There’s also a stop at an indigenous village in the mountains too, where you can visit fruit plantations and also try various chocolates and other local snacks.

Out of the three hikes this one is the least demanding , so would be best for those who are rushed or have difficulty hiking in altitude.

Machu Picchu from Cusco Travel Tips

Now we’ll share some of our best tips that we’ve picked up when hiking through Cusco and the Sacred Valley to Machu Picchu.

  • Spend 2 Days in Cusco Prior – Unfortunately altitude sickness can affect anyone regardless of their fitness level. However it’s been proven that 48 hours is sufficient for your body to adjust, and will make any hikes easier than if you jumped straight in on your first day.
  • Buy Coca Leaves – This handy tool has been used for thousands of years by locals. Upon consumption (either chewing or drinking in a tea) they help your system to absorb oxygen more readily, which is usually more difficult in these higher altitudes. Another good option is taking Soroche Pills, which can be bought in any InkaFarma in town.
  • Try to Book in Advance – Although Machu Picchu is always being snapped by travellers, it’s actually surprising how often certain times can be sold out. Be sure to book your own entrance ticket (in advance), or you may miss out. This is even more important for the Inca Trail, as there’s limited spaces allowed on the mountain on any one day.
  • Head on the Shoulder Seasons – Nobody likes places that are overfilled with tourists, however certain times of the year (such as the summer) can be pretty intense. It’s best to hike Machu Picchu either in September, October, March or April which are more relaxed. Even better is that the weather will be perfect too during these months.
  • Use High Quality Boots – Your feet will be your best friend here, and will make the difference between a jolly memorable hike or multiple days through hell. We recommend these solid hiking boots for men, and these solid hiking boots for women. Trust us when we say it will be one of the best investments you make when hiking through Peru and the rest of Latin America.

And that’s all for our guide on how to get to Machu Picchu from Cusco.

Machu Picchu is a truly incredible sight to visit, however the actual adventure in getting there is just as memorable .

In this article we’ve covered three different ways of getting there, with each offering something slightly different. We’ve also covered some top hiking tips that will help to enhance your own experience when here.

Be sure to read our article on Hiking Machu Picchu for more advice.

From Cusco to Machu Picchu: Everything You Need to Know

Machu Picchu is the most iconic tourist attraction to be found anywhere in Peru, and perhaps anywhere in South America. This world-famous Inca ruin is found high in the mountains, and its history is as mystical as the very clouds that swirl around the towering, snow-capped peaks.

After the fall of the Inca Empire to the Spanish conquistadors in the 16th century, Machu Picchu was lost to records and to time.

It stood abandoned, hidden away in the mountains for centuries until it was again rediscovered in the early 20th century. From that moment of rediscovery, this ‘Lost City of the Incas’ has become an epic tourist attraction in the heart of the Peruvian mountains.

It’s a sight to marvel at, a sight like no other, where the ruins of this Inca city are perched on dramatic cliffs, in overwhelmingly beautiful surroundings.

The gateway to Machu Picchu is the old Inca capital of Cusco, and from here you can hike through the mountains or take the scenic train as close to the base of Machu Picchu as possible.

Either way, figuring out the best route can be difficult, especially as many of the multi-day treks have limited places available. It’s best to plan your trip to Machu Picchu well in advance, as it is a once in a lifetime experience, but an experience that is incredibly popular amongst travelers.

To help you out, here’s our guide to traveling from Cusco to Machu Picchu.

A Brief History of Machu Picchu

Table of Contents

Machu Picchu is an ever-enduring legacy of the Inca Empire that fell to the Spanish invaders in the 16th century. This once powerful and advanced civilization was wiped out by the European conquerors in an incredibly short space of time, and much of the history, culture, and traditions of these people were lost.

It’s thought that Machu Picchu served as a summer retreat for the Inca rulers, who had their capital nearby at Cusco, and that few people actually lived here all year round.

It was a guarded, secretive place built for the elite, and so when the empire fell, it’s no surprise that details of its location were lost too. This, however, is all speculation, as no one is quite sure what the site’s purpose was.

Since its rediscovery at the turn of the 20th century by explorers hoping to find gold and riches and the lost vestiges of an empire, Machu Picchu’s legend has only grown and grown. Now it’s a UNESCO World Heritage Site and an important Inca relic that’s much loved by locals and tourists alike.

From Cusco to Machu Picchu - Everything You Need to Know

Where is Machu Picchu?

Machu Picchu is found in the Southern Sierra mountain range, in the far south of Peru. The closest city to the ruins is Cusco, the ancient Inca capital. This is the starting point for all travelers visiting Machu Picchu, no matter the method you choose to take, as Cusco is well connected to the rest of the country.

There are regular, daily flights to the Peruvian capital Lima, and from Lima’s international airport, there are frequent worldwide connections to North America and even as far afield as Europe.

Flight time from Lima to Cusco is an hour and a half, which is much preferred over the 24-hour bus ride, but be sure to book in advance, particularly in peak season.

The Best Time to visit Machu Picchu

This high altitude region of Peru is a very weather dependent destination. The area sees very distinct wet and dry seasons, with very extreme temperature differences too.

Summer is brutally hot and experiences massive rainfall, while winter is incredibly dry with cold nights. The wet season generally runs from November to April and the dry from May to October, and this coincides with the low and peak season for tourism.

Traveling to Machu Picchu in the wet season is not recommended, as the rainfall can block roads and cause dangerous landslides. Permits may not be issued for multi-day hikes either during the rainy months, and February will see the trails closed entirely for maintenance.

The most popular months are the dry days between June and August. If you want to travel then, be sure to book far in advance, as spots on the hikes and even plane tickets can be sold out months ahead of time.

Altitude Acclimatization

Cusco is found at an altitude of 3400 meters (11,154 feet), while Machu Picchu itself lies at an altitude of 2400 meters (7,874 feet). If you are flying straight into Cusco, and you are more used to life at sea level, then the altitude may cause unprecedented problems before you even begin your trip to Machu Picchu.

Many travelers will choose to stay in Cusco for a few days to get used to the high altitude, before attempting any hikes. Machu Picchu is at a lower altitude than Cusco, so if you have everything planned and arranged in advance, then you can travel straight onto the lower altitude.

You can spend a few days acclimatizing in the surrounding area, at lower levels, before attempting any strenuous hikes, to ensure you get the most out of your trip. In reality, you will find that it’s Cusco that causes the trouble, not Machu Picchu, but traveling to Cusco is unavoidable.

Travel From Cusco to Machu Picchu

There are several different routes and methods available when it comes to traveling from Cusco to Machu Picchu. For those who have the time and the relevant fitness, the most popular method is to undertake a multi-day hike, allowing you to really immerse yourself in the incredible mountain scenery.

Those who are pressed for time or who would prefer not to hike, are best taking the train.

From Cusco to Machu Picchu - Everything You Need to Know

The Train From Cusco To Machu Picchu

Aguas Calientes can be reached by a combination of road and train. There are no direct trains from Cusco, instead, you need to make your way to the town of Poroy, about twenty minutes away.

From here, there are two companies running direct trains to Aguas Calientes. These companies are Peru Rail and Inca Rail. This journey takes about two hours and 45 minutes each way.

The second option is to travel to the town of Ollantaytambo, which is a ninety-minute bus ride from Cusco. From here are there more trains to Aguas Calientes, a journey time of around one hour and fifty minutes.

This can be a cheaper option or a good way to break up the journey by staying overnight in Ollantaytambo and exploring the other nearby Inca sites in the Sacred Valley.

Luxury travelers may want to consider the Hiram Bingham Train, run by Peru Rail and named after the explorer who rediscovered Machu Picchu. It’s an opulent journey, complete with gourmet dining and cultural displays, but there’s a price tag to match and limited reservations.

Hiking The Inca Trail

The most popular long-distance walking route from Cusco to Machu Picchu is the Inca Trail. This is the classic hiking trail, and there are two or four-day options. It can be tough, as you endure drastic changes in altitude, so it’s best to acclimatize before and be physically fit.

The classic four-day hike begins at kilometer 82 of the railway line to Aguas Calientes, while the two-day hike begins further along and is a good option if you are pressed for time.

There are only a limited number of permits available for the Inca Trail so it’s necessary to book in advance. You can reserve your spot with tour companies before permits are even released each year to give you a higher chance of securing one, particularly in peak season, although even this isn’t guaranteed.

We recommend booking the Inca Trail with G Adventures , which operates an award-winning and sustainable Inca Trail experience. They are the best in the business and are frequently recognized for their program that operates out of Cusco.

Both of these trails lead through the iconic Sun Gate, for the best but busiest views of Machu Picchu.

From Cusco to Machu Picchu - Everything You Need to Know

The Salkantay Trail

The Salkantay Trail is a new addition to the Cusco to Machu Picchu multi-day hikes. Known as the Llama Trail, it’s essentially a back road into the ruins.

It’s an excellent option for those who either can’t get the Inca Trail permits or who prefer a quieter hike. It’s much more arduous, however, as it crosses the Salkantay Pass which at its peak height rises to 4600 meters (15,091 feet), so acclimatization is a must.

The trail takes five days to complete. The trek is best experienced with an experienced agency and we highly recommend booking the Salkantay Hike with G Adventures . They are an award-winning small group tour company that offers incredible trips.

Inka Jungle Trek

The Inka Jungle Trek is another popular alternative to the Inca Trail hike, and as the name suggests, this takes walkers through the jungle from Cusco to Machu Picchu.

It’s not just a hike, but more of an adrenaline-fueled journey to Machu Picchu. The trip involves off-road mountain biking, zip-lining between trees and trekking along rivers and through the mountains. It’s an epic trip that takes around three days to complete.

From Cusco to Machu Picchu - Everything You Need to Know

Where to Stay – Aguas Calientes

The closest town to Machu Picchu is Aguas Calientes – also known these days as Machu Picchu Pueblo. This is a ragged, tourist hub that has expanded quickly, as it’s literally in the shadow of the ruins.

A road leads to Machu Picchu from the town and it’s an uphill walk of one and a half hours each way, or you can take the tourist bus to speed things up exponentially.

There is one expensive hotel in the town and many budget rooms to choose from, but technically you could make the trip to Aguas Calientes, then to Machu Picchu in a day from Cusco.

Planning a Trip to Peru? Skip Machu Picchu.

B efore you start trolling me, hear me out. Yes, Machu Picchu is one of the Seven Wonders of the World. Yes, it is a breathtaking feat of ancient engineering, a foundational part of Inca history, and incredibly scenic and beautiful. I’m not denying any of that.

But…the mountaintop ruins of Machu Picchu are claustrophobically crowded, seeing 1.2 million annual visitors in a relatively small area. They’re also expensive to visit compared to nearby options and, for anyone who likes novelty, severely scripted. Guides take you on a prescribed loop, recite the same talking points and place a huge emphasis on helping you get the perfect Instagram shot. That’s all fine and well, just not my cup of tea. Perhaps it’s not yours, either.

Alternatively, you could skip Machu Picchu for something off the beaten path. This may sound blasphemous, but, trust me, it’s not.

Tourism is Peru’s third biggest industry and there are plenty of small towns and villages that rely on this income to stay afloat — with the pandemic and recent political unrest , many of them are struggling. To help you visit one of these local hidden gems, here are three different travel ideas near Cusco:

Start By Finding a Knowledgeable Guide

When I was young, cheap and traveled internationally with just a backpack, I never hired a guide. In some ways this is just as appealing today, using the internet as a resource for food, accommodations, and experiences. Yet, over the years I’ve learned that nothing beats local knowledge; even the top travel websites and agencies know far less than those who live, work, and play in these places daily. The value of a guide easily offsets the cost — the experience is much more immersive..

Here’s an Authentic Peruvian Ceviche Recipe You Can Whip Up Stateside

Ceviche, Peru's national dish, is celebrated in the country every summer

A good guide will allow you to enter homes, sit down for meals and eat traditional food, and be part of rituals that have been around for centuries. This is the core reason I travel these days, to search out moments of human connection that bring us closer together. Plus, selfishly, hiring a guide allows me to relax more, without having to worry about juggling logistics, schedules, or bartering in a foreign language.

If you’re heading to Cusco, reach out to Jose Condor and his guiding company, Peru by Locals , which specializes in treks and tours, Incan traditions, medicine, and history, and exploring places that few others know about. Jose grew up in a mountain village near the Sacred Valley and is fluent in Quechua, Spanish, and English. He studied tourism at University and has been guiding for nearly two decades. Below are our top three boutique trip suggestions, for all types of adventures.

Hidden Gems to Explore in Peru

Llama trekking around Rainbow Mountain. For those interested in a multi-day hiking adventure — and a good replacement for the Inca Trail trek to Machu Picchu — a visit to the Cordillera Vilcanota is worth your time. After a three-hour drive from Cusco you’ll arrive at a popular destination called Rainbow Mountain, which opened in 2015. This is what most people come to see, but just the tip of the iceberg for you.

Instead of fighting the crowds on a day hike at Rainbow, the richer way to see this area is trekking with llamas on a two- or three-night adventure. This region is inhabited by small llama and alpaca herding communities who trade with farmers at lower elevations. Jose builds personalized itineraries through the maze of local trails and will bring a small support crew to cook traditional meals, set up and break down camp each day, and facilitate a safe and fun trip. Llama trekking truly is an experience like no other.

Food and culture in the Sacred Valley. For those looking for a slower pace and deeper culinary experience, we recommend an homestay in the Sacred Valley, a region in the Andean highlands. Just an hour north of Cusco, this fertile valley played a crucial role for the Inca, growing most of the maize for the empire. The valley is littered with lesser known archaeological sites to visit, too.

Close to his childhood home and deeply tied in with the local communities, Jose organizes immersive food experiences with local farmers, offering guests a first-hand look at traditional agriculture and, of course, a chance to try delicious Peruvian dishes like Lomo Saltado, Rocoto Relleno and Cuy.

Mountain bike tours near Cusco: For adrenaline seekers, a great way to explore the singletrack trails on the hills surrounding Cusco is by bike. Many of these routes were once Incan footpaths, giving you a chance to ride through ancient history and learn about Incan architecture with Jose as your guide. As an avid mountain biker, Jose guides small groups on custom day tours, accommodating your skill level, schedule, and fitness level. Cusco is based at 11,000, so biking can be challenging!

Final Verdict: Go Off the Beaten Path

While it may sound like heresy to skip Machu Picchu on any trip to Peru, a deeper dive proves otherwise. There are a wide variety of lesser-visited options that give you a more authentic and immersive experience. Whether you’re looking to learn about the history of the Incan Empire, eat traditional food, or experience Peruvian culture, the better decision is to go off the beaten path.

Hiring a guide like Jose Condor unlocks an entirely new suite of options, from llama trekking in the Vilcanota, to spending a day with traditional farmers in the Sacred Valley, or mountain biking ancient footpaths around the Incan capital of Cusco. All you need to decide is which one fits you best.
