Where is MasterChef Australia filmed?

Profile picture of Now to Love

Hey siri, cue Hot and Cold by Katy Perry because a brand new season of MasterChef Australia is just around the corner!

Hosted by fan favourites Melissa Leong, Jock Zonfrillo and Andy Allen once more, the new season is sure to be filled to the brim with the best culinary talent Australia has to offer!

So where abouts is the new season set to be filmed (or should we say has ALREADY been been filmed)?

Just like previous seasons, the 2023 season of MasterChef: Secrets and Surprises will be filmed at Centenary Hall, Royal Melbourne Showgrounds.

Built in 1934, the hall has been kitted out to the max and now houses a fully functioning commercial kitchen, ”boucherie”, herb garden, locker room, wine reception area, 120 seat restaurant and pantry.

The venue has also been the site of a number of other television products as well, including Channel Nine’s Lego Masters and the improvisational comedy show Thank God You’re Here , which is set to be rebooted in the latter half of 2023.

The MasterChef kitchen is every foodies dream come true!

In a 2019 exclusive interview with TV Week , contestants opened the doors to what life was like when they weren’t cooking for the judges.

In the MasterChef eastern Melbourne mansion located in Canterbury, contestants slept in five bedrooms, comprised of bunk beds!

Their home away from home also came with a gym and a state of the art kitchen where they cook meals for themselves and the production crew.

The home was comprised of six bedrooms, four bathrooms and was three levels.

From the outside, the production doesn’t look that exciting but as we all know, appearances can be deceiving….

But, in the 2022 season it looked like the family feel was no more with contestants move to serviced apartment accomodation, a source close to production telling Refinery29 that there were two contestants to an apartment.

The changes in accomodation type came into play during 2020 as coronavirus reared it’s ugly head, and has remained in place to this day.

Masterchef Australia Filming Locations

Masterchef Australia Filming Locations

There are more Masterchef Australia filming locations than we can count.

George Calombaris, Gary Mehigan and Matt Preston have visited country retreats and farmland, new restaurants in Sydney and Melbourne city centres and some of the biggest names in fine dining. Masterchef Australia Off Site Challenges have taken the contestants right across the country.

We’ve tracked down some of the most memorable Masterchef Australia locations from across the years. Their fortunes have varied though!

You can still eat at some of the Team Challenge restaurants, but others have shut down or moved. Others, like Maggie Beer’s own farmland retreat, just keep getting better.

Where is Masterchef Australia Filmed?

visit masterchef kitchen melbourne

For the first five years, the show was based in Sydney. The original Masterchef Australia filming location was on Doody Street near Sydney Airport , which put all the city's eateries in convenient reach. But with George Calombaris and Gary Mehigan both running restaurants in Melbourne, it's a logical move that's brought the studio closer to a different culinary scene.

We know by now that the studio is just one part of the story. This show really doesn't hold back on getting out on location.

Sydney Chinatown

visit masterchef kitchen melbourne

A few blocks away at the Sydney Chinatown Markets , we saw mixed results as Audrey, Dalvinder and Mindy navigate the Asian supermarkets.

You can explore the famous Friday Night Markets as well as checking out the everyday stores.

Fishy Business

Trevor and Justine headed up the teams in Season 1 Episode 33, Fishy Business. In a totally immersive Off Site Challenge, the first Masterchef Australia contestants headed out on fishing boats.

First off though, Peter Kuruvita greets them on Jones Bay Wharf in Pyrmont.

At the time of filming way back in 2008, it was the location of his restaurant, Flying Fish – the eatery moved to The Star at Pyrmont Bay ten years later.

If you want to take a boat trip without the stress of catching your own dinner, check out the ferry timetable at Pyrmont Bay.

The Darling Harbour to Circular Quay takes you under the Sydney Harbour Bridge and docks near the Sydney Opera House.

And guess what? Pyrmont Bay is just a few minutes away from the Chinese Peace Garden that was used in the Season 2 Off Site Challenge.

400 Gradi Team Challenge

Season 9 Episode 9’s 400 Gradi Team Challenge sets up the contestants to cook for 250 diners at Johnny Di Francesco’s Italian restaurant, 400 Gradi .

Wood-fired pizza and Neapolitan flavours are on the menu at the Brunswick eatery, as seen in the Masterchef Australia team challenge.

As if the food didn’t already look appetising enough, take a recommendation from a pro – this is one of Matt Preston’s favourite places to dine in Melbourne, and we all know he doesn’t settle for less than.

Not a local? 400 Gradi’s now got locations across Australia, and further afield in Auckland, Bahrain and Kuwait, because the language of great pizza is universal.

The Langham Melbourne

visit masterchef kitchen melbourne

You’ll see it in a Masterchef Australia Season 2 Off Site Challenge during Melbourne Week.

The ingredients came from Melbourne’s Queen Victoria Market , a foodie haven of shops and stalls.

It’s also got its fair share of other stuff, from clothes to gadgets – if you’re not in the middle of a Masterchef contest you can check out all that’s on offer!

When Christy Tania took over as the Executive Pastry Chef in 2016, she brought a challenging dish into the Masterchef Australia Kitchen.

Mistique was no ordinary chocolate mousse – but we knew that as soon as the smoked glass dome was unveiled.

The Press Club

You probably know The Press Club is one of host George Calombaris’ restaurants. But it’s also appeared onscreen, as another Melbourne Week Off Site Challenge in Season 2.

This restaurant probably needs no introduction – it’s all about Hellenic cuisine cooked with the very best Australian produce. George, Matt and Gary champion that combination of the taste of home made with fresh local ingredients on the show, and of course The Press Club is the perfect example.

Kylie Kwong’s Melbourne Chinatown Challenge

visit masterchef kitchen melbourne

In Season 8, the celebrity chef tasted contestants’ noodles dishes , wontons and coconut desserts in the heart of Melbourne’s Chinatown.

She greets the contestants in front of a crowd under the Facing Heaven Archway on Little Bourke Street and Cohen Place.

Kings Cross Team Challenge

Season 4’s first Off Site Challenge was sent the contestants to Sydney’s Kings Cross. Splitting into red and blue teams, they take over Ortolan on Bayswater and Concrete Blonde.

Concrete Blonde was located at 33 Bayswater Rd in Potts Point, Australia. It opened in 2011, with the contestants dropping by in 2012 – but just two years after restaurateur George Michael’s establishment opened, it shut its doors permanently.

It’s a similar story for Ortolan on Bayswater . The French restaurant started out on smaller premises as Bistro Ortolan before moving to Bayswater Road in Kings Cross.

Despite featuring on the cookery show earlier the same year, it closed in September 2012.

There are new eateries in the complex, if you want to get a foodie fix on your way through.

Heston Blumenthal’s Melbourne Star Challenge

visit masterchef kitchen melbourne

In true Heston style , the contestants whipped up dishes like the Black Hole and Star Dust for guests in the revolving pods.

When a team of amateur chefs aren’t taking it over, the Melbourne Star is an observation wheel. This tourist spot offers up clear views across the city’s skyline from its vantage point in the Docklands area.

But you really can eat here! There’s now a whole range of dining experiences available to book, if you want to replicate the Season 7 moment .

The Mean Fiddler

In Season 3, the contestants were split into boys’ and girls’ teams and let loose on The Mean Fiddler . After creating a bar food menu centred around steaks and burgers, they had to take on a bustling service.

It’s still trading as The Fiddler (mean no longer) with a chic new look.

Cronulla Beach Barbeque Challenge

visit masterchef kitchen melbourne

Season 3’s Cronulla Beach Challenge set the contestants a family-friendly task – cooking up sausages and ice cream for families.

You might recall one of the Masterchef Australia Season 3 contestants, Hayden, worked as a professional lifeguard before signing up to the show. So it was as good a time as any for a beach challenge.

Cronulla is just one of Sydney’s many sunny beaches . It’s got a lower profile than Bondi or Manly but it’s got plenty of golden sand and, yes, cafes and restaurants .

Barossa Valley and Maggie Beer’s Farm

The Tenth Anniversary couldn’t possibly miss this stop. As part of South Australia Week, Matt, George and Gary paid a visit to a long-time friend of the show at her base in Barossa Valley .

Maggie Beer’s Heritage Orchard has got more than a bit of tradition about it. Maggie’s Farm Shop and eatery are on hand if you want to make the journey and pick up some Verjuice for yourself.

Now you can get right into Barossa Valley life by staying at Maggie Beer’s rental cottage, Orchard House .

It’s surrounded by a working orchard and furnished with sumptuous home comforts – and of course, the fridge is stocked up with the cook’s own products .

Bondi Icebergs Club

When Masterchef Australia took a trip back to Sydney for the 10th anniversary season, they dropped in at the Bondi Icebergs Club. It was a tough cook for fan favourite Sashi, with Ben and Jess also feeling the pressure of the head chef’s impeccable standards.

You can find Bondi Icebergs Club at the southern end of Bondi Beach. It’s got a swimming pool so members can take a dip all year round, and it’s open to visitors too.

Nigella Lawson’s Royal Challenge

visit masterchef kitchen melbourne

As part of Nigella Week, The Burgundy Team cooked a menu created for Queen Elizabeth II’s first State Visit to Australia in 1954. Over on the Purple Team, the recipes were originally served for the Edward, Prince of Wales (the future Edward VIII) in 1920.

Contestants researched the dishes at the Victoria State Library before serving the vintage creations.

The library offers free tours and exhibitions throughout the year, if you fancy doing a spot of research yourself.

Picnic at Hanging Rock

We couldn’t have guessed this one, but it’s clear where the idea came from. Taking inspiration from the classic novel , the Picnic at Hanging Rock Challenge had a far better outcome!

The teams filled 25 picnic baskets to feed 100 guests at the spooky beauty spot in Victoria. But who could feel unsettled with Maggie Beer around ? The celebrity

Yotam Ottolenghi’s Street Food Service Challenge

Yotam Ottolenghi Week was action-packed. The restaurateur and deli owner jumped right into Masterchef Australia with on-brand, fuss free cuisine in the Deli Challenge and Street Food Service Service Challenge.

Masterchef Australia Season 11’s The Street Food Service Challenge took place at HWKR Food Centre on A’Beckett Street, Melbourne .

Each of the three teams served street food from around the world to a restaurant full of customers. This challenge couldn’t have taken place in a better location. HWKR is inspired by the food centres of Singapore and Malaysia, where vendors trade street food in a bustling food court.

But the stylish Melbourne eatery goes the extra mile. You order by app, selecting from a changing line-up of vendors that opens up endless Asian flavours.

Masterchef star Khanh Ong smiling for the camera in front of Crown Melbourne complex.

Masterchef fans, unite: Crown is set to open Alumni, a hot new pop-up restaurant from some of the show's brightest stars

Here's everything you need to know so far

Lauren Dinse

Sure, watching Masterchef is pleasurable to the eye (aka food porn), but don't you ever wish you could just step into the screen and actually taste all those dishes from the show's best kitchen wizards? Well, thanks to a brand new collaboration between Crown Melbourne and Masterchef Australia, now you can.

From May 16 to August 4, the complex will host a unique Masterchef pop-up restaurant helmed by a rotating line-up of some of the most beloved chefs from the show.  Each of them will hold a three-week residency, during which they'll serve up visitors some of their favourite signature dishes, inspired by the respective cuisine they're most lauded for.  Queen of spice and all things nice Kishwar Chowdhury is set to kick off proceedings until June 2.  “I am so excited to be the first MasterChef off the rank for the Alumni  at Crown residency," Chowdhury shared. "I’ve curated a special menu featuring some of my signature dishes, showcased across India and Bangladesh, including the dessert that took me to the MasterChef finale."

Said dessert, of course, is none other than Chowdhury's 'Love Letter to Bangladesh': a heavenly scoop of t oasted fennel and betel leaf ice cream, served with dark chocolate ganache, toasted coconut, dates, candied fennel mukhwas and jaggery caramel. Yeah, we'd make a booking for Chowdhury's residency for a taste of that dish alone. Savoury highlights from her menu include a lime and coconut scallop ceviche with charred pineapple and a rich Mughal-spiced goat shoulder in roasted marrow Nihari jus.

Trip of Masterchef alumni cooks smiling for the camera.

Callum Hann, who'll be following Chowdhury with a residency that begins on June 3, has shared in the enthusiasm.  “MasterChef set me on the path towards the career I have today," he fondly recalled. "From the age of 19 it’s been a part of my life and story so I’m very excited to showcase my love for Aussie produce and take the best of what’s in season to create an unforgettable menu. As one of the earliest MasterChef alumni, I’m also super proud to show my kids where the dream began.”

If you, too, were charmed by Khanh Ong's vibrant personality and undeniable talent throughout the show, you'll be glad to know he'll also be participating in the pop-up with a residency from June 27 until July 14.  “I've put together a menu that really brings out the best of my Vietnamese heritage and mixes it with some fine dining flair. We're talking bold flavours, fresh ingredients, and little twists along the way that I hope everyone will love!”

A fourth mystery star from Masterchef's alumni will also be joining on the fold but Crown's lips are sealed on that name at the minute. The announcement will be made on June 25.

To make a booking for the first residency, head to the website. More details about the pop-up are available here  and you can join waitlists for the next residencies.

The highly popular cooking competition show has been filmed at the Melbourne Showgrounds, in Centenary Hall, since its inception. The impressive Centenary Hall was built in 1934. Originally, its purpose was to showcase the display of farm and dairy produce during the Royal Melbourne Show.

The versatile space has hosted other productions such as Nine’s “Lego Masters” and Seven’s “Thank God You’re Here”, in addition to “MasterChef”.

According to the Sydney Morning Herald, the hall is “soundproofed and air-conditioned” with the purpose-built studio now housing a “fully functioning commercial kitchen, “boucherie”, herb garden, locker room, wine reception area, 120-seat restaurant and pantry.”

Season 16 of “MasterChef Australia” returns to the familiar location, but with significant changes to the judging panel. Melissa Leong has stepped down from her co-host role to focus on the new spin-off series, “MasterChef: Dessert Masters.” Andy Allen returns to the judging panel, joined by newcomers Poh Ling Yeow, Sofia Levin, and Jean-Christophe Novelli. Who Is Kay-Lene Tan?

Melbourne-based Chef Kay-Lene Tan has trained under the”Chef of the Century”, Joël Robuchon. In 2018, Tan was the recipient of the Hostplus Hospitality Scholarships, which sent her around the world to learn from her heroes, including stepping into the kitchen at Atelier Crenn in San Francisco and Hisa Franko in rural Slovenia.

Before wielding a spatula, Tan was in the film industry, working on documentary film productions. Then, as she calls it, her quarter-life crisis pushed her to enrol at the At-Sunrice Global Chef Academy in Singapore, where she graduated with a diploma in pastry and bakery art.

Her first real-world experience was under the watchful eye of Joël Robuchon, where she mastered classical French basics, then moved to Pollen, where she honed her own style under mentor and acclaimed pastry Chef Andres Lara.

Tan then moved to Melbourne , where she held the impressive title of Head Pastry Chef at Tonka and Coda Restaurants. There, she blended traditional and contemporary flavours from her childhood to create works of art that look good and taste good.

Today, you can find Tan in the kitchen of the lauded hotel chain, The Ritz-Carlton Melbourne , where she whisks her magic for guests and oversees all the sweet and bakery items as Executive Pastry Chef.

Only On 10 And 10 Play On Demand.

MasterChef Australia  is hitting the road in partnership with Visit Victoria.

In three episodes airing from Monday, 7 June, judges Melissa Leong, Jock Zonfrillo and Andy Allen are travelling alongside our top 14 contestants and crew, with a series of culinary challenges in regional seaside and country locations, as well as in the heart of Melbourne, filmed in March.

Taking the competition outside the MasterChef kitchen for the first time in two years, the MasterChef team is thrilled at the chance to savour the sights, local produce and hospitality on offer.

Travelling down the Great Ocean Road, first stop is Apollo Bay to show off the region’s exquisite seafood and beautiful coastline, before heading to the countryside on Tuesday to explore the quality produce against the beautiful backdrop of Daylesford, hosted by celebrated chef Alla Wolf-Tasker at her Dairy Flat Farm.

Then on Wednesday, the creative energy of Melbourne’s CBD is on display with contestants challenged to create delicious dishes as inspired by Melbourne’s unique urban culture, incredible architecture and world-class food scene.

MasterChef judge Jock Zonfrillo said: “To be able to take the show on the road to regional Victoria was awesome. Victoria has so many incredible local producers and hospitality offerings, and we had a great time in Apollo Bay and Daylesford. To explore Melbourne’s vibrant food culture and to have these wonderful regions quite literally on our doorstep is such a special gift.”

While many Australians can’t visit these fantastic locations at the moment, they can support local hospitality businesses through Click for Vic – a digital platform launched by Visit Victoria that collates a wide range of excellent Victorian produce, beverages and chef-prepared meals.

Visit Victoria CEO Brendan McClements said: “With MasterChef in Apollo Bay, Daylesford and Melbourne, the judges and contestants had the opportunity to soak up our beautiful coastline, taste their way through the regions and explore our buzzing city. Viewers can plan a trip to these stunning locations down the track or enjoy a taste of Victoria at home with Click for Vic .”

MasterChef Australia: behind-the-scenes visits can be strange. In this case, it was bittersweet

In January, MasterChef fan Clem Bastow visited the show’s set to watch Tuesday night’s episode being filmed. Months later, and after Jock Zonfrillo’s death, the day holds all new meaning

  • Get our weekend culture and lifestyle email

I f you want the fantasy of film and television to disintegrate like a poorly tempered chocolate shell, “visiting the set” is usually a surefire way to bring on a dose of reality. Epic movie locations turn out to be a big green cube in a disused carpark; that cosy bar from your favourite drama series is actually a chaotic corner of a suburban studio. Not for nothing did the Wizard Of Oz once yell , “Pay no attention to that man behind the curtain!”

It followed, then, that the offer of a visit to the set of MasterChef Australia back in January felt like an invitation to almost certain disappointment: surely seeing how the sausage is (occasionally, literally) made would bring the magic of MasterChef crumbling down. What if the workroom turned out to be the size of a studio apartment? Is the famed MasterChef pantry just a close shot on a local Coles supermarket? Are the judges really eating all that food?

As it turned out, none of the above were true. Yes, the workroom is as grand and imposing as it looks. When I entered the MasterChef pantry, I felt a little like Homer Simpson visiting the Land Of Chocolate, dancing around and thinking about what I’d grab in a hurry. The MasterChef garden is, truly, one of the most glorious things I’ve ever seen. Its denizens (some are now well-established, mature plants) are lovingly tended off-site year-round, then appear at the Royal Melbourne Showgrounds for the shoot, as if by magic. Of all the glimpses behind the curtain, wandering through the barrels and containers where home-runs of previous seasons have been plucked in a hurry (strawberry gum! Warrigal greens!) was the most entrancing.

Inside the MasterChef Australia pantry.

I visited in January during the filming of All Stars Week – by now well-established in MasterChef lore as a venerable blend of hero worship and psychic agony. It was the episode which aired on Tuesday night, when Luke Nguyen put the bottom three of the week – Adi Nevgi, Grace Jupp and Theo Loizou – through a pressure test. The task: recreate his famed phở (pause for orchestral sting) without the recipe .

The other contestants gasped from the gantry. The legendary ingredient bench groaned under a cornucopia of fresh herbs, cuts of meat and other items the contestants would need to figure out how much of to use. The fragrant aroma of Nguyen’s phở filled the space, so rich it felt like you could float around on it, like cartoon characters smelling a freshly baked pie.

And yes, the memory of all this is now bittersweet.

When I think of Jock Zonfrillo, who died in May , I hear Jimmy Barnes singing The Bonnie Banks of Loch Lomond to eulogise his mate. Watching MasterChef this season has been, for many , a conflicting experience: a joy to see Zonfrillo doing what he loved, alongside his mentee Andy Allen and co-host Melissa Leong, but uncanny nevertheless.

Death comes for us all, but it’s strange how the loss of those in the public eye can stir up long-dormant emotions. I have struggled to watch, even as a card-carrying MasterChef Australia nut ( recapping the show ranks among the most fun things I have ever done as a writer) – and keeping the secrets of the set visit until the episode has been a strange experience. This mundane little professionalism of observing a publicity embargo is, I suppose, just one of the many ways in which life goes on, but it has also been an exercise in magical thinking: hey, weren’t we all at the Showgrounds together just days ago?

Like all of the judges (and Nguyen), Zonfrillo was a delight: engaged and engaging, even in a rushed chat with a visiting writer during a camera reset. I did my best (once a teacher’s pet … ) to dazzle the judges with my own history of Royal Show cookery triumph : Allen, always eager for a dessert, was particularly enthusiastic; Leong as glam and graceful as ever.

We were only on set for the initial burst of manic energy as the pressure test began (yes, that big clock is just as stressful to see ticking down in person). In the end, Theo and his “spot-on” noodles triumphed. Grace, alas, was undone by Nguyen’s deceptively simple dish. Even though her noodles were praised as “silky”, an ill-fated decision to roast the meat and bones made her phở broth “greasy”. At the episode’s end, she hung up her apron.

All television production is stressful; I’m sure there are plenty of days when those in the MasterChef kitchen, both behind and in front of the camera, want to clobber someone or everyone with a leg of mutton. But the overwhelming sense I got was that the warm feeling we get when watching the show at home is not entirely a confection of editing and musical cues. Zonfrillo was full of good grace, humour and warmth. Though he was not immune to a terrible pun, he was also quick to offer solace to contestants overwhelmed by the pressure of the competition. And then there was that infectious, Basil Brush-esque laugh.

As the contestants and viewers discovered, the secret ingredient in Nguyen’s Pho Suon Bo is bull’s penis. Addressing the contestants, he fumbled his line, asking them, “Have you ever eaten penis?” The team quickly reset so he could add the essential descriptor (“ bull’s penis” he corrected, chuckling), but it was too late. The “ooh er, matron” overtones were too much to resist, and Zonfrillo’s laugh rang out around the shed like a klaxon. Surrounded by friends and colleagues, breathing in the heady aromas of good, honest food, and laughing at a gag about a bull’s knob: something tells me he’d like to be remembered like that.

Hi, just a crazy question here.

I wonder if anyone has heard of guided tours to the Masterchef kitchen or the filming location?

Am a great fan of the show.

' class=

Yes, that sounds exactly like what we saw :-/

Fast forward to 2017...........................do you think it will happen in 2017?

Not sure. You could go and see the outside though.

Perhaps email the Royal Melb Show organisers to ask if they will be opening up the MC kitchen again this year. As already mentioned, you can see building that they filmed in but it may or may not have the MC logo, herb garden or red vespa outside still.

The. Building. As I now. Live in Queensland and I am 70. I seem. To remember it but can't remember where

From. Can some one please help me.

Love. The show my daughter. Has intellectual disablity. She never misses the show When.

On tries so hard to. Cook like they do Has started eating food She would never even taste. before.

Love to take. Her for a look around

Is it possible.

To do and where.

Re #27 - l am afraid that the RMS has already finished for this year. It was on about a month or so ago. I did visit the MC building where it was filmed but as it wasnt kitted out for the show so it really was just a building. Even the MC logos were taken down so it would be quite disappointing for MC fans.

I come from Holland,

you certainly will not find any of the chefs there they are only there during shooting of episodes, they all have their own restaurants or other commitmnts

The MasterChef Trail of Melbourne

By Samai Haider

Published in the Dhaka Tribune on 8/1/2018

F lemington, Melbourne. It had only been a few months since I’d moved to this bustling inner-city suburb; its streets lined with quaint Victorian cottages in stark contrast with the ethnic restaurants that plied their trade on the main strip. While out on an afternoon stroll around the neighbourhood, I decided to follow the sounds of what promised to be a heady carnival and turned up at the Melbourne Showgrounds. The annual Royal Melbourne Show was underway. Navigating through the melee of rambunctious children, parading horses and screaming roller coasters, I found myself at a quieter part of the grounds, staring at a very familiar brick façade. Blinking rapidly to ensure it wasn’t a trick of light, I looked again at the well-known white logo emblazoned across the front. Then my eyes fell on the famous M-shaped herb garden – it was, indeed, the MasterChef Australia studios.

Melbourne, the most liveable city in the world, is also lauded as a spectacular food destination. It is home to the MasterChef Australia studios, a fact that I, as a MasterChef fan, was completely unaware of until I stumbled upon it in my own backyard. The studio itself is housed in the Centenary Hall inside the Melbourne Showgrounds and can only be accessed by members of the public while the Royal Melbourne Show is in progress [1] . Gambolling up the steps with other excited fans, I realised that the friendly faces greeting me on the steps and holding the doors open, were none other than the contestants themselves. Feeling rather sheepish, I entered through the giant, double-doors and was confronted by the tomato-red Vespa behind which sprawled the cavernous studio, corralled by the wrought iron gantry, made famous by the show. Touring the studios, I drank in the familiar sights – the judging table, the work stations, the clock disdainfully hanging over the hall, somewhat akin to a hangman’s noose. I walked out, star-struck, past the MasterChef finalists giving cooking demonstrations and taking photos with excited fans as their pots bubbled away.

As I went past the herb garden, I spied a red chilli amongst the green foliage, beckoning at me like a beacon. Thinking it’d be a delightful accompaniment to the  lau daal  I would be cooking later that evening, I unabashedly nicked it for myself. Perhaps my tour of the studios had inspired me to put in some extra effort, or perhaps the chilli had some magic MasterChef dust on it, but my  daal  that night tasted sensational. And as I reflected upon my day, I realised Melbourne was a MasterChef fan’s dream come true. Asides from housing the MasterChef Australia studios, the city is home to many of the celebrity judges’ restaurants featured on the show.

Follow in the footsteps of your favourite MasterChef judges

The vociferous George Calombaris owns several restaurants in Melbourne, all of which pay homage to his Greek heritage.  The Press Club , located on Flinders Street, remains the jewel in his crown, promising a theatrical fine dining experience. However, not all of George’s restaurants are about fine dining.  Jimmy Grants , with its multiple locations and serving delectable Greek souvlakis and creamy feta chips, operates akin to a takeaway joint. While the queues may be stretched, the prices though, are not. The more upmarket  Gazi , on Exhibition Street and  Hellenic Republic , with its taverna inspired restaurants across Melbourne also feature the best of Greek cuisine. It is possible to get a taste of George Calombaris without breaking the bank, as both restaurants offer reasonably priced lunch menus on weekdays.

Gary, Mehigan, the jolly judge, co-owns  The Boathouse , which serves up intriguing Italian fare on the banks of the Maribyrnong. Guest judge Shannon Bennett is head chef at the celebrated  Vue de Monde  on Collins Street, which pairs Australian produce with French classics. If fine dining is not to your palate, Shannon Bennett serves up small meals and lunchboxes at his café,  Café Vue , a branch of which is also conveniently located at Melbourne Airport. He also owns a burger bar in Richmond,  Benny Burger,  dishing up succulent and sustainably sourced burgers.

Celebrity chef and fan favourite Heston Blumenthal has recently set up shop at the Crown Towers in Melbourne.  Dinner  by Heston is characterised by his trademark and unorthodox culinary pairings. They too feature a slightly more budget friendly lunch menu.

MasterChef fans who’ve been following Season 9 would have been introduced to the genius of Ben Shewry. Shewry’s  Attica  in Ripponlea, oft lauded as Australia’s best restaurant, touts modern Australian cuisine. Darren Purchese, of  Burch and Purchese Sweet Studio  in South Yarra, became a fan favourite by introducing viewers to the dramatic Passion Flower dessert in the latest season. He can often be found behind the counter of his dessert bar, as witnessed by yours truly, barking orders and simultaneously serving customers with care and grace. For an indulgent birthday treat, it is even possible to order one of their famous cakes.

Kit out your kitchen with MasterChef products

For MasterChef paraphernalia, head to the nearest Coles supermarket. Not only does this supermarket giant supply all the MasterChef pantry staples, they also stock a variety of MasterChef products, starting from top-grade kitchen utensils and bakeware to the famous aprons. It is worth noting however, that these products sell out like hot cakes and are usually on sale during MasterChef season. If you’re unable to get your hands on the coveted kitchenware, there is always the option of shopping online with homeware stockists like Kitchen Warehouse.

[1]  The Royal Melbourne Show generally takes place in spring. The Show is set to take place over 22 September – 2 October in 2018, at the Melbourne Showgrounds in Flemington, Melbourne.

Bird’s-eye Views of Rio de Janeiro

Rio – the concrete jungle that sprung up amidst mountainous rainforests, is fondly referred to as Cidade Maravilhosa (Marvellous City). Standing atop one of the many mountains scattered around the city, it is apparent why. The views proffered were some of the most breathtaking. In my last article for the Rio series, I highlight some of the city’s most unique and unforgettable views.

Rousing Rio

Rio is a city of varying extremes, encapsulated in wild rainforests and beaches, a metropolis of skyscrapers and shantytowns; a cosmopolitan city, steeped in history – something I’d come to realise after a month in this beguiling city.

I explore its many aspects through a series of articles on the city. This is the second of three.
