A visit to Santa’s Grotto at Dobbies Garden Centre

Last Updated on May 4, 2024

This year I took Ryan to his second Santa’s Grotto, which was Santa’s Grotto at Dobbies Garden Centre. Last year we went to Santa’s Grotto at Smith’s Garden Centre .

Once we arrived it took some time to find where the Grotto was, because the Garden Centre was quite large, and there were many different sections to it.

However, after following some signage, we finally made it to the Grotto, which was located near the restaurant, towards the back of the Garden Centre.

Once we reached the Grotto’s entrance, we waited in line with a few other people, the people behind us happened to be Ryan’s teacher from last year, and her son.

After about a 15 minute wait, Snowflake the Elf came out and read out three children’s names, Ryan’s name was included, and then all children and their parents were asked to come into the Grotto together.

Before we entered Santa’s Grotto, Snowflake told the children that they could only enter if they believed in the magic of Christmas, which I thought was a weird thing to say to 4-6 year olds. They had to cheer if they believed in the magic.

Once finally inside, it was very beautiful. It was filled with Christmas trees, sparkling lights, some plush reindeer, moving squirrels, and a couple of activities for the children to do together.

The first activity was helping Snowflake put some presents back in Santa’s sleigh, which they all did.

Once done they had to follow Snowflake to his best friend, Frosty the Snowman, who had fallen down and the children had to put him back together, and put a scarf on him.

There wasn’t enough room for all three children to do this together, so only two of the children could really do it, which was a shame.

Once Frosty was sorted, we all walked towards Santa, where each child had to take turns to answer some of his questions.

Santa was really good with the children, he asked them questions and waited for their responses.

Ryan was first, and Santa asked him what list Ryan thought he was on. Ryan hesitantly said the good list.

Santa then asked Ryan what was on the top of his Christmas list, Ryan said a laptop, the other mums laughed.

Santa very convincingly told Ryan that the Elf’s weren’t that great with technology, so they would try their best to get it to him, but there was no guarantee.

We then had Ryan’s photo taken, which cost £8 to buy, then we walked out of the Grotto whilst the other children spoke to Santa.

Overall I wasn’t very impressed with the Santa’s Grotto at Dobbies Garden Centre.

The main thing I didn’t like was going into the Grotto with other children, because not all children got to do all the activities due to lack of space, and also because they were shy around children they didn’t know.

Also, other mums and children could hear your conversation with Santa, so it wasn’t a very personal experience.

Because of these reasons, as well as the time it took to get there, this isn’t a Santa’s Grotto that we’ll go back to.

Santa’s Grotto at Dobbies Garden Centre is located at Aylesbury Road, Aylesbury, Buckinghamshire HP22 6BD. For more information on Santa’s Grotto at Dobbies Garden Centre please visit their website .

Pre paid for Christmas lunch at Dobbies website. Absolutely disgusting, cold, no taste to any part of the meal. If I didn’t know I would say this whole meal was delivered in a plastic container possibly frozen and heated in a microwave. Not one member of staff asked if we enjoyed it, I think they were frightened to ask.

We like Dobbies Garden Centre but we always find their mocha cold and watery. We still grab our coffee their thought after a browse in the garden area.

“5* breakfast with Santa” Review of Dobbies Garden Centre

photo0.jpg

We have just got back from breakfast with Santa and we had so much fun I wanted to do this straight away as I think we found something rare. We have three children under 5 and what most places seem to have forgotten Dobbies had spot on. What children need and want is time. We got there and they had a relatively small sized group which was perfect as the children all felt special. Breakfast came out very quickly tasted good and could be eaten straight away all very important when you have very little ones. Santa came out and said hello to each child straight away which meant there was no long wait or tears they all got attention quickly and immediately. They had set up a crafting table which was great as all the kids loved making elf masks and Santa came round and spoke to each child several times. He then played games like 'Santa says' and then each child got to go up individually for a present and a photo then they gave plenty of time for family photos. Photos were taken by us and the elves but no 'professional' photo which was great as it was just so inclusive and didn't feel like a money making exercise. Thank you for a very magical morning making memories which is what Christmas is all about.

I would avoid the resturant, last time we went in the summer all of the tables where dirty and had dirty plates on ect, called again at 1.55 after waiting for 10mins in a never ending line ended up with 2 coffees 1 peice of cake which came to 10.89 coffee was cold and undrinkable, and the cake was cheap the worst I have ever tasted it was lotus biscoff, had no flavour what so ever. The table again was dirty and so was the carpet .There is never enough staff 2 people left the line before being served, go to the pub next door or the garden centre down the road I think it's called Pipers much better customer service and a cleaner environment.

Needed to visit Dobbies to make a purchase so thought we would stay for Sunday lunch Very expensive at £12.99 for a cafeteria style roast beef dinner, made up of several items from the freezer and packet gravy. The staff were friendly and kind but service was a bit chaotic with different staff serving hot and cold options. The deli section looked very nice and probably would have been a better option with items being freshly prepared for you. The seating area is in need of a revamp.

Had some toasties. The food was fine. But the cafe was uncomfortably warm with no air movement. I had to buy some fans from The Works. It was almost like we were sat in a giant greenhouse.

Seriously underwhelming! I had a toastie which was underdone, the bread seemed cheap and the ham and cheese tasteless. However at £7.95 not a pricetag that reflected the offering!! The mocha again was lacking in any flavour and very bland. The only saving grace was the raspberry ripple cake. My husband did enjoy the carrot and coriander soup. Although the staff were pleasant and seemed hard working, the floor was full of crumbs and food debris and needed sweeping.

A new addition to the festivities this year is the Quiet Grotto - which will be available at 50 stores across the UK.

Working in partnership with Autism Together, there will be Santa visits that are supportive of children with additional needs, considering sound and visual elements, and helping to minimise anxiety.

Michelle Walklett, Head of Autism Together’s Autism Training and Advisory Service, said: “As a specialist UK charity supporting autistic people, we’re pleased to be working with Dobbies in Liverpool to help enhance their Christmas Grotto experience for visitors with autism and other sensory needs.
