Chapel Choir Tour to Ireland and Scotland

Duke Chapel Choir Tour to Ireland and Scotland

The Duke Chapel Choir is on tour in Ireland and Scotland from May 19 to 29, singing in services and concerts in Dublin, Glasgow, Edinburgh, and St. Andrews. See their itinerary below and check back here for updates from the tour. View  repertoire and texts .

Capturing the tour in sights and sounds.

Watch the sights from the Chapel Choir's tour of Ireland and Scotland in the compilation video below. The tour included singing in services and concerts at seven majestic churches as well as visits to historic and cultural sites in Dublin, Glasgow, Edinburgh, and St. Andrews. The music in the video is “Brother James’ Air" by James L. Macbeth Bain (1860–1925), arranged by Mack Wilberg, performed by the Duke Chapel Choir at St. Giles’ Cathedral, Edinburgh, on May 26. Audio and video production by Pablo Vega with The Workshop. Also, watch a playlist of the videos from the tour .

Tour Finale in St. Andrews

From Anna Cambron, a Graduate School student, on May 28

Today we visited St. Andrews, a lovely little seaside town and golfing paradise. We sang a morning service at St. Mark’s Church and got to meet some of the congregation over tea afterwards. We had a bit of time for sightseeing before our afternoon concert, so I grabbed a quick lunch and spent some time exploring the ruins of St. Andrews Cathedral, once the largest church in Scotland. The ruins and the rest of the town were so peaceful (except for the seagull that tried to fight me for my sandwich!). Then, we sang a concert at Holy Trinity, a beautiful finale to a beautiful tour! I’m not looking forward to flying home tomorrow....

A Striking Perspective on Edinburgh

From Anna Cambron, a Graduate School student, on May 27

Today we went sightseeing in Edinburgh. First we toured Edinburgh Castle, and then we hiked up a hill called Arthur’s Seat and got some amazing 360-views of the city. The climb was sometimes difficult and it was very windy at the top, but reaching the top brought a great sense of accomplishment. After we came back down, I spent the rest of the day peacefully in the National Gallery of Scotland and its nearby gardens.

A view of Edinburgh from the hill "Arthur's Seat."

Highlights from Scotland

The Chapel Choir visited Stirling Castle, Bannochburn, and the Trossachs, and gave an evening concert at Glasgow Cathedral on May 25. The next day, the choir arrived in Edinburgh, Scotland, and gave a lunchtime concert at St. Giles' Cathedral, the “high kirk” of Scotland. The performance audio and footage is from the choir singing "the spiritual "Every Time I Feel the Spirit," arranged by William Dawson, at Glasgow Cathedral. Audio and video production is by Pablo Vega with The Workshop.

Concert at St. Giles' Cathedral

One of the pieces the choir performed at their midday concert at St. Giles' Cathedral in Edinburgh was "Jubilate Deo" by Benjamin Britten. Watch it here:

Arriving in Edinburgh for a Midday Concert

From Anna Cambron, a Graduate School student, on May 26

Today, we said goodbye to Glasgow and drove to Edinburgh, our next stop on the tour. We took a lovely bus tour of the city’s main sights, with Edinburgh Castle, the site of tomorrow’s visit, looming above us. Every street we drove down was full of beautiful Georgian and Neoclassical architecture. We sang a lunchtime concert surrounded by Scottish history in St. Giles' Cathedral, and had a bit of time to explore before and after a group dinner. I ended up doing a bit of vintage shopping and taking a sunset walk around part of the edge of the city.

The Chapel Choir reviews their music at St. Giles Cathedral in Edinburgh, where they gave a concert.

A Day of Historic Sites Culminates in a Concert at a Cathedral

From Beth Johnson, a Divinity School student, on May 25

Today, we began by visiting the battle sight and museum of the Battle of Bannockburn. The museum was incredibly insightful and taught us a lot about Scotland! Next, we drove through the beautiful mountains and hills up to the Stirling Castle where we saw the Queen’s Room (throne room), the King’s Room, and many other personal spaces of the royalty. Then we jumped in the bus and headed to meet some highland cows (or as they call them in Scotland “coos”)! They were very soft and fluffy! We finished our day with a performance at Glasgow Cathedral and received a standing ovation!

Appreciating a Cathedral's Community Across Time and Class

From Anna Cambron, a Graduate School student, on May 24

This morning, we visited Glasgow Cathedral, Glasgow’s only surviving medieval structure, where we will be performing a concert this Thursday night. The stained-glass windows have been replaced over the years with new art and new dedications to donors or military units. I was particularly struck by a window listing several trade organizations that donated, including wrights, gardeners, coopers, weavers, and many other jobs. It reminded me that people of all types, not just Glasgow’s most wealthy and important citizens, had a role in creating the cathedral and the community as we see it today. In the afternoon, several of us went out for a delicious high tea at the Willow Tea Rooms, decorated in the Art Nouveau style of Glaswegian architect and artist Charles Rennie Mackintosh. Two very different architectural experiences, but both joyful and inspiring!

Joining Voices with the Glasgow University Chapel Choir

Last night (May 23), the Duke Chapel Choir joined the Glasgow University Chapel Choir in presenting a concert at Glasgow University Memorial Chapel. In this video the combined choir, conducted by Zebulon Highben, sings "We Shall Walk Through the Valley," arranged by Undine Smith Moore:

Highlights from Ireland

Watch below highlights from the Chapel Choir's time in and around Dublin (May 21–22), which included singing in a Sunday morning Mass at Whitefriar Street Church, giving a concert at Christ Church Cathedral, and visiting the ancient Glendalough monastery. The music in the video is "The Spirit of the Lord" by choir director Zebulon Highben, performed jointly with the University of Glasgow Chapel Choir on May 23 at Glasgow University Memorial Chapel.

A Visit to a Monastery Presents an Opportunity to Sing

From Kene Anumba, a Graduate School student, on May 22

We had a day off from performing today and headed to Glendalough, known as the valley of the two lakes. It boasts many iconic scenes, including the Glendalough monastery, which was founded in the late sixth to early seventh century by St. Kevin. Today, it attracts many tourists such as our choir. Upon arrival, the choir was taken to see a fifteen-minute video explaining everything about the monastery, including its history and evolution over time. Afterwards, the choir was taken to see other parts of the monastery, including: the round tower, monastery cathedral, Celtic Cross, St. Kevin’s Kitchen—inside which the choir sang “The Spirit of the Lord”.

First Performances

From Beth Johnson, a Divinity School student, on May 21

Today was a full day! The Chapel Choir began by singing at mass at Whitefriar Street Church, which was beautiful and very moving for many of the members of their congregation. Then the choir was whisked away to go to Trinity College to see the Book of Kells (an extremely old and beautiful Bible). Inside was also the Long Library where they preserve old books. The rest of the afternoon we were given free time. I joined a group of choir friends and headed to Dublin Castle. We ended the night with a successful concert at Christ Church!

Arriving in Ireland

From Anna Cambron, a Graduate School student, on May 20

The Chapel Choir arrived in Dublin today! We’re all excited to get the tour started. I personally can’t wait to sing in some of the most beautiful historic places in the world! Once we landed, our tour guides took us on a lovely bus tour of Dublin’s major architectural sights. My personal favorite was Dublin’s convention center, nicknamed “the tube in the cube.” After a bit of sightseeing, we capped off the night with a welcome dinner at our hotel; most of us went to bed early to sleep off the jet lag to be ready for performing tomorrow.

Final Rehearsal in the U.S.

As a New York native who’s called Duke home for nearly 12 years, Debbe Geiger occasionally has curious family and friends visit from out of town.

Debbe Geiger, far right, on a tour of campus she gave to friends from out of town. Photo courtesy of Debbe Geiger.

“I love taking relatives to the Lemur Center and the Brodhead Center,” she said. “We’ve been to the Gardens several times, sometimes we’ll just drive around. It’s just a really special place.”

When it comes to showing off Duke, few people are better equipped than the people who work here every day. We asked staff and faculty to suggest their favorite campus tour stops, and here are a few answers.

Duke University Chapel

The soaring interior of Duke University Chapel leaves many visitors moved.

But Bouton-Verville, associate director for program management at the Duke Human Vaccine Institute, said that there’s something special about a visit to Duke University Chapel .

“When you walk up to it, everybody kind of goes quiet,” Bouton-Verville said. “They’re just taking it in. You can see their eyes are really big.”

Aside from the grandeur of the stained glass, elegant stonework and stunning scale of the building, Bouton-Verville appreciates that the religious meaning of the space shows visitors how life at Duke has many sides.

“It kind of reminds them that there’s more than just science here, there’s more than just sports,” Bouton-Verville said.

Cameron Indoor Stadium interior.

Last spring, a good friend of Debbe Geiger’s came down from New York with her family. The friend’s 13-year old son was a basketball fan, so when Geiger showed the family around campus, Cameron Indoor Stadium was a must-see sight.

As luck would have it, on the day they visited, Cameron was open, and Geiger and her guests tagged along with a group taking a tour. The tour included a chance to walk on the court and ended with a stroll through the nearby Duke Basketball Museum and the Duke Athletics Hall of Fame .

“They loved it,” Geiger said. “It was great. And I’m a big Duke basketball fan, so any opportunity I have to feel the vibe in that building, I will take.”

A few weeks ago, Geiger was able to attend a Duke basketball game.

“I was at a game and I posted a photo and said we were at a game,” Geiger said. “And then my friend responded saying ‘I WAS ON THAT FLOOR!!!’ It definitely resonated with them.”

Atrium of Duke Children's Health Center.

With sunshine streaming through windows, bubbling fish tanks and a brightly-colored mobile featuring rings of turkey feathers floating in the center of a multi-story lobby, the atrium of Duke Children’s Health Cente r is an inviting, cheerful space in the middle of a bustling medical complex.

The beauty of the space is one of the reasons Marti Brauer, an information security analyst for Duke Health Technology Solutions, is so fond of showing off the lobby to visitors.

“They love it,” Brauer said. “They think it’s cool.”

Brauer, who previously worked with Duke Health’s Office of Development and Alumni Affairs , helped raise money for the facility, which was opened in 2000. Her work in that capacity gives her another reason to show the space off.

“A lot of people don’t know that this came from personal donations,” Brauer said. “This was built with the generosity of a lot of individual people.”

Goodson Chapel.

Ashley Lunn, program coordinator for disability services and project management with Duke Divinity School, often takes guests to Duke University Chapel to soak in the gothic revival majesty. But she’ll follow it up with a trip to the Duke Divinity School’s Goodson Chapel , which is just a few steps away.

“Most people don’t know we have a chapel in the Divinity School,” Lunn said. “They’re so amazed at how different it is. They don’t expect it to be this beautiful.”

Opened in 2006, the 300-seat chapel features soaring glass windows that look out onto the trees of Chapel Woods. With bright wood and an airy layout, it’s a modern counterpoint to its ornate, iconic neighbor.

“When you’re in Goodson Chapel, you don’t feel like you’re right there in the heart of campus, there’s this forest around you,” Lunn said. “It’s so open. It’s almost like you’re worshipping outside.”

interior of the Brodhead Center.

Recently, Cat De Montjoye, marketing manager for Duke Integrative Medicine , brought several relatives to campus for a look around.

While hitting many of the popular spots on campus, it became time for lunch. Trying to find a spot to please an array of tastes wasn’t difficult. De Montjoye brought her group to the Brodhead Center, where they got to explore the sleek, modern facility and choose from a wide selection of food vendors.

“The ability for people to just float around and explore was really nice,” De Montjoye said. “The space is beautiful and the quality of the food is wonderful. This was something we had a lot of fun with.”

De Montjoye said her guest dined on rice bowls, Indian food and paella. For dessert, they shared a flourless chocolate cake.

“It was so rich and delicious,” De Montjoye said. “It was a great experience for everyone.”

The interior of the Gothic Reading Room.

As a tour guide coordinator for the Office of Undergraduate Admissions, which provides tours for around 50,000 visitors annually, Ilana Weisman knows plenty about what spots on campus leave guests impressed.

The Gothic Reading Room, on the second floor of Rubenstein Library , is one such spot. With wood paneled walls, portraits of past presidents, ornate chandeliers and towering windows, it’s a quiet, grand space for study.

“There’s a little bit of that awestruck feeling,” said Weisman, Admissions Officer. “For a school that’s so young and energetic, to see something that seems so rooted and so historic in a space that’s so modern and collaborative is really cool.”

Hailed as “an uncommonly deft combination of dance and verbal theater” in a New York Times Critics’ Pick review, Last Ward follows one man’s journey towards death in a hospital room. Surrounded by the sterile mechanisms of modern medicine, the patient reflects on his life, relationships and connection to place, as the ritual of doctor visits and family calls transform into a surreal landscape of tragedy and humor. Performed in Arabic with English subtitles, Last Ward was written and directed by Amir Nizar Zuabi with choreography and music by Samar Haddad King.

These two performances follow a week-long residency with the company at Duke University.

Adrianne Lenker with special guest Suzanne Vallie

Friday, November 22 at 8:00 p.m. in Page Auditorium

Adrianne Lenker, known for her work in both the indie-folk band Big Thief and as a solo artist, will perform in support of her latest album, Bright Future . The concert will open with a performance by poet and songwriter Suzanne Vallie.

Chamber Arts Series:

Now in its 79th year, this popular series features eight concerts by world-renowned small ensembles selected by the Chamber Arts Society of Durham for the Duke Arts Presents season. The season opens with the acclaimed Tesla Quartet in their Duke debut. The innovative piano-percussion Vesna Duo follows with their “Roots and Rhizomes” program, which ends with their energetic take on Stravinsky’s “The Rite of Spring.” Paris-based Modigliani Quartet returns to Duke in October with a wide-ranging program of works by Weber, Ravel and Beethoven. The semester ends with a “Beethoven Journey” program by Chamber Arts Series favorites David Finckel and Wu Han , a cello-piano duo who are leading figures in the American classical music scene.

After a brief winter break, concerts resume in March with the acclaimed young Goldmund Quartet making their Duke debut. UK luminaries the Elias String Quartet then performs a program of wrought, emotional string quartets by siblings Fanny and Felix Mendelssohn flanking “Entr’acte,” a 2011 piece by North Carolina-native Caroline Shaw. The trailblazing Zodiac Trio brings an exciting program of works by American composers performed in their unusual instrumentation of clarinet, violin and piano. Finally, the globally acclaimed Jerusalem Quartet returns to Duke Arts to close the season with works by Mozart, Shostakovich and Brahms.

Piano Recital Series:

Each year, the piano recital series showcases the talents of four world-leading pianists in Baldwin Auditorium. This year’s series begins with German pianist and famed Bach interpreter Schanghajegh Nosrati in her Duke debut. Next, Korean pianist Joyce Yang returns to Duke for the first time in twelve years; since her last visit, she has blossomed from wünderkind into a mature and sensitive artist at the forefront of her craft. The third concert brings renowned American pianist Michelle Cann with “The Women of Chicago’s Black Renaissance,” a program that pairs Cann’s virtuosic playing with spoken commentary about the fascinating lives of its featured artists. The series closes with the Mexican piano prodigy Daniela Liebman , who at age twenty-one has already performed with over thirty orchestras on four continents.

1. Schaghajegh Nosrati on Sunday, September 29, 2024, at 7:00 p.m. 2. Joyce Yang on Sunday, November 3, 2024, at 7:00 p.m. 3. Michelle Cann on Friday, February 21, 2025, at 7:30 p.m. 4. Daniela Liebman on Sunday, March 30, 2025, at 7:00 p.m.

Vocal Ensemble Series:

The Vocal Ensemble Series from Duke Arts Presents showcases the highest level of vocal talent from across the globe. The distinguished vocal ensembles in this year’s four-concert series illustrate the vast variety and dynamism of the choral artform.

The series begins with two leading British vocal ensembles.  Tenebrae  is scheduled to provide a moment of togetherness in Duke Chapel immediately following the 2024 general election. In December, a cappella octet  VOCES8  will visit Baldwin Auditorium to perform “Winter Tales,” a program of holiday music spanning centuries, from medieval carols to “Let it Snow.” Over MLK weekend, American chamber choir  Tonality  performs “America Will Be,” a dynamic program that conjures a patriotic future of the United States for all people. And finally, German boys’ choir  Thomanerchor Leipzig , founded in 1212, will close the season in Duke Chapel with a wide range of works by more than ten composers, including their most famous cantor, Johann Sebastian Bach.
