Consumer claims portal opens after Dream World Travel collapse reveals data anomalies

The west London agent traded as Bookholidaysonline.com and Bookonlineflights.com

The Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) has opened a claims portal for customers of failed Atol-holder Dream World Travel to seek refunds.

London-based Dream World Travel ceased trading in late July . But the CAA initially postponed starting the claims process because of “anomalies” in the firm’s bookings data.

Announcing the delay on August 5, the CAA also warned: “Because of the anomalies, there may be delays with some large or complex bookings.”

Dream World Travel had traded since 2006 and sold mainly long-haul travel.

The CAA has given no indication of the number of outstanding bookings but Travel Weekly understands consumers could be owed up to £11 million.

In its information to consumers, the CAA makes clear: “Only flights sold by Dream World Travel Ltd where a valid Atol Certificate was issued, are Atol protected.

“These were typically for flights secured with just a deposit (rather than payment of the full cost of the flight) or flights paid in full where a flight ticket was not issued immediately, but an Atol Certificate was issued.”

The CAA notes: “We understand Dream World Travel also sold flights under its Iata licence and as agent for the airline operating the flight.

“These flights are not Atol-protected. You are advised to contact your airline.

“Unprotected flights were typically those where full payment was made at the time of booking and a ticket, or an e-ticket was issued straightaway and no Atol Certificate issued.”

CAA Atol spokesperson Andy Cohen advises potential claimants: “The best way to determine if a flight was Atol protected is to check your paperwork.

“If you booked an Atol-protected flight, you will have an Atol Certificate which says ‘Flight-Only’ in the bottom right-hand corner.  Dream World Travel Atol number 9398 will also be shown in the box to the left of this.

“We can only accept claims for cancelled Atol-protected trips. Unfortunately, this means if you booked an unprotected flight, you should contact the airline.”

Consumers who hold a scheduled flight ticket are advised to check with the airline “as the flight should be valid”.

The CAA advises: “If the airline advises that a ticket has not been issued or is not valid for travel, ask them to confirm this in writing, as this will be needed as confirmation when making a claim.”

Where an Atol-protected booking was cancelled and a refund credit note (RCN) issued, the CAA tells consumers: “You may make a claim through the Atol scheme, subject to how you originally paid.

“If you paid Dream World Travel direct by credit card, the credit card issuer is also responsible for refunding the entire cost of the transaction. Therefore, you should forward your claim to your credit card issuer for reimbursement of the entire amount.”

The CAA website provides a template for doing this, a ‘Letter for credit card issuer’.

Consumers who made payments to Dream World Travel by cheque, debit card, bank transfer or cash may make a claim by completing an online claim form.

Claims must be submitted by July 25, 2023, with the original date of the booking and the most-recent Atol Certificate number

Claimants are advised to enter 00:00 for the flight time if this is unknown.

The CAA reminds potential claimants it has the power to prosecute those making fraudulent Atol claims.

Customers of bust dream world travel face refund delay.

dream world travel atol protected

‘Anomalies’ in the data supplied by Dream World Travel to the aviation regulator mean customers face a delay in claiming a refund.

Customers with outstanding bookings with the West London travel agent face another setback following its collapse last week.

The Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) said it is currently assessing the booking data supplied by Dream World Travel which it needs to process claims for ATOL protected bookings.

However, the CAA said there have been “data anomalies” meaning there will be a delay in opening the claims process for anyone who booked an ATOL protected trip.

ATOL is managed by the CAA and is underpinned by the government. It is a protection scheme afforded to holidaymakers with flight-based bookings which refunds, repatriates and reimburses travellers if the company fails.

The CAA said it will give an update to holidaymakers once it opens its online claims portal. It will then “start to process claims as quickly as possible”. An update is expected on Monday 8 August.

However, it added: “Because of the anomalies, there may be delays with some large or complex bookings.

“We thank consumers for their patience and advise them to visit www.ATOL.org for any further updates.”

Dream World Travel also traded as Al-umrah, Biznessclassflights, Bookholidaysonline, Bookonlineflights and Detltd.

If you booked via any of these trading names and do not hold ATOL protection, you need to see if you can get a refund before turning to Opus Restructuring LLP.

One method is via Section 75 of the Consumer Credit Act 1974 for transactions over £100. This allows you to raise a claim against your credit provider if:

  • You paid some (or all) of the cost by credit card.
  • The cash price of the services is more than £100 but not more than £30,000.

If the above applies, contact your credit card provider or bank to request a refund under Section 75 of the Consumer Credit Act 1974. You should tell your provider that the company failed to provide your service, cannot issue a refund, your booking is not ATOL protected, and the company has engaged insolvency practitioners to placing the company into liquidation.

If you can’t get a refund under Section 75 of the Consumer Credit Act 1974, you may be able to claim under the chargeback scheme rules.

Chargeback is a transaction reversal made to dispute a card transaction and secure a refund for the purchase made by debit card.

There is a time limit on chargeback claims – typically 120 days from the transaction processing date, or from when you expected to receive the service if it’s being delivered.

If you paid via instalments under Fly Now Pay Later (authorised by the Financial Conduct Authority), Opus said the transaction could be covered by Section 75 of the CCA. This allows you to raise a claim against Fly Now Pay Later as above.

'data anomalies' delay atol holder claims process.

James Chapple

"Data anomalies" are delaying the claims process for a failed Atol holder, the CAA has warned.

eCard

West-London based Dream World Travel (Atol 9398), which was licensed to carry nearly 4,500 passengers this summer, collapsed on 26 July.

Companies House filings show the business turned over £36.1 million in the 12 months to 30 June 2020. This fell to less than £6 million in the 12 months that followed as the Covid pandemic took hold.

The CAA said on Friday (5 August) it was assessing booking data supplied by Dream World to ascertain the scale of the claims process for Atol protected bookings. "We understand the impact the failure of this company will have on the customers involved," said the CAA.

"Unfortunately, in the case of Dream World Travel, based in West London, there have been data anomalies meaning there will be a delay in opening the claims process for anyone who booked an Atol protected trip.

"We will make a further statement when we will open our online claims portal. When this happens, we will start to process claims as quickly as possible, but because of the anomalies, there may be delays with some large or complex bookings."

Dream World, which had been trading since 2006, traded under dreamworldtravel.co.uk, www.al-umrah.com, www.biznessclassflights.co.uk, www.bookholidaysonline.com, www.bookonlineflights.com and www.detltd.com.

The insolvency is being overseen by Opus Restructuring LLP, which issued a lengthy statement via dreamworldtravel.co.uk on Thursday directing Atol holders to the CAA website.

Any customers already abroad with a return ticket, or have had their tickets issued for future travel, should contact their airline to confirm if the ticket(s) are valid for travel.

Customers who have purchased flights but have not been issued tickets have been warned no tickets will be issued for travel.

"The booking is likely to be terminated automatically as a result of non-payment to the airline," the statement read. "The company cannot issue refunds and will not be issuing tickets."

The ATOL scheme (which stands for Air Travel Organisers’ Licensing) is financial protection that protects you when you book a package trip that includes a flight. It is separate to travel insurance.

It also includes some Flight-Only bookings sold by UK travel companies when they stop trading as an ATOL holder.

It was introduced in 1973, as the popularity of overseas trips grew and it is run by us at the UK Civil Aviation Authority (CAA).

If your travel company stops trading when you are abroad, we’ll help you to continue your trip by:

  • Assisting you to stay in your holiday accommodation, if possible
  • Reimbursing you for any money you spent to replace ATOL protected parts of your trip, e.g car hire, transfers
  • Arranging flights home, depending on the circumstances.

Boyfriend and girlfriend having fun on the beach

ATOL protection covers you before and during your trip. When you purchase a trip that is ATOL protected, you will receive an ATOL Certificate .

It will show you who and what is covered, as well as provide guidance on what to do if your travel company stops trading as an ATOL holder.

We recommend that you always keep a paper or digital copy of this certificate saved with you.

The scheme is designed to reassure you that your money is safe, and will provide assistance in the event of an ATOL holder failure.

How is the ATOL scheme paid for?

It is able to provide assistance by requiring ATOL holders to pay a fee of £2.50 for each traveller, which is held in a fund managed by the Air Travel Trust .

This fund is used to refund, repatriate or reimburse you for the cost of repaying for affected parts of your trip.

This money creates a fund that will support you in minimising disruption to your trip in the event of an ATOL holder failure or if you are no longer able to travel, provide a full refund of what has been paid so far.

dream world travel atol protected

Your travel company should make it clear if your flight-only booking is ATOL protected before you book.

If you book an ATOL protected flight, you will be sent an ATOL Certificate after making a payment. However, you will not receive a valid e-ticket in exchange for payment.

If you purchase an airline ticket from an airline or travel company and you receive a valid e-ticket in exchange for payment, the ATOL scheme does not cover this.

Accommodation-only bookings

Accommodation-only bookings are not ATOL protected as these do not include a flight.

However, the travel company you are booking with may be a member of other organisations, meaning you may be entitled to other forms of protection.

Take a look at the travel company’s website to see which organisations they are members of before booking.

dream world travel atol protected

Booking with a travel agent

Travel agents often sell trips on behalf of other companies.

You may need to check which travel company originally created your package trip to see whether they are an ATOL holder.

Exceptions to ATOL protection

Am i atol protected if i book different parts of my trip with different companies.

Not usually, unless your trip is sold as a package and you receive an ATOL Certificate confirming this. If you purchased the flight element of your trip with an ATOL holder, this part may be protected.

Does ATOL cover booking made with travel agents?

Travel agents often act on behalf for a number of companies, including ATOL holders. When you book an ATOL protected trip with an agent, it must tell you which ATOL holder is protecting your travel plans, and provide an ATOL Certificate when you pay.

If you book just a flight, they must either issue you with a ticket straightaway or confirm your ATOL protection.

I booked my package trip with a travel company, am I covered if the airline fails?

Yes. Your travel company must find you alternative flights or refund your money.

If your return flight is cancelled while you are on your trip, they must book you onto an alternative flight.

What is a Linked Travel Arrangement (LTA)?

LTA’s are formed when a business sells two or more travel services (e.g. a flight and hotel booking) as separate items.

As an LTA does not constitute a package it does not, need to be protected under ATOL. However, an LTA may include an ATOL protected element within it, such as an ATOL protected Flight-Only or an ATOL protected flight inclusive package.

If a travel business offers LTAs, it must inform you that this is the case and what protection you may have.

Wouldn't recommend

I was regretting paying for the ticket through DWT. Took me 4 days to get my eticket, luckily I was given my eticket. Should of been Instant eticket on the day, not waiting for a few days then receiving it. But I wasn't convinced after reading so many bad reviews. so I decided to contact the airline direct, they were more helpful then the agency were. Airline confirmed my ticket and also gave me a ticket and receipt from their airline company. I have tried to contact DWT on the phone lines, WhatsApp doesn't work, so hard to connect. Or sometimes they won't answer. Only interested if your buying a ticket. Then you'll hear nothing. I had response from DWT on email lately but so hard to contact them. Gave me a ball ache trying to get the ticket and contact. I'm going to buy a ticket direct from the airline instead next time even if it cost £50-£150 more. Atleast that way I know I haven't been scammed and my money hasn't gone missing. I'm giving 2* rating cause I did get my eticket from dwt but never again. The hassle and stress caused. I wouldnt recommend in my opinion. They need to be honest with there customers not fobbed them off.

The lowest of the low

The lowest of the low, they should be used car salesmen, the flight booking part of their business went insolvent in July, they just didn’t bother to inform their customers. We were due to fly to Bali tomorrow but during the online check-in we realise we no longer have a booking. Now we will have a fight to get our money back. Don’t use this company for anything, we will never use them again, they are an utter disgrace!

Date of experience : 15 September 2022

Please Stop wasting your time!!

It is very worrying to see people still expecting to hear from Dream World Travel or considering taking legal action which would be pointless. The company ceased to trade in July, so writing letters, emails or attempting to call are all a waste of your time. Please follow the advice in my review at the top of the page, either claim from your card issuer or claim through the CAA.

Dream World travel is a true travel…

Dream World travel is a true travel agent in London but as all travel agents. Went into financial difficulties Any one can actually view their financial report on HMRV and learn more Now they went under.. yes they should not operate.. people should really look at reviews before purchasing from none trusted names . If you have purchased tickets from the and paid ATOL Then you will get your money back even if flights only ! All what you’d have to do is go the civil aviation authority and submit a claim ones all investigation about them completed.

Been waiting for 8 months for my £750…

Been waiting for 8 months for my £750 refund after cancelling a Christmas eve flight 2 hours before check in. They don’t answer the phone but over email keep promising the refund will hit my account on specified dates, but it never does. From the looks of the other reviews it seems this exact experience has happened to a lot of people. Perhaps a class action would work?

Date of experience : 11 August 2022

… Trust worthy

They are really working hard to explain the situation and staff us also co operative. They guy who dealt me have super knowledge and sort out my concerns in no time

A more appropriate name would be Nightmare Travel. We have given them one star as we needed to to leave a review. We have had the worst possible customer service imaginable after our flights were cancelled in December 2021. Finally after countless emails and phone calls we contacted our credit card company who have arranged a refund for us seven months later. We believe they would not have refunded the money without us taking this step. Steer clear of Dreamworld Travel!

Glad these cowboys have ceased trading!!

Glad these cowboys have ceased trading! Bunch of anchors really screwed me and my partner over and have had to book more expensive flights so we can still go on holiday. What's infuriating is the fact there has been no contact from anyone to say they had stopped treading. At least then we wouldn't have had as much stress rebooking something! Hopefully we get a refund from the ATOL protection we had. Good rinse, C U Next Tuesday Sumeet ramchandani

Has anyone else had problems with this company?

THIS IS A TOTALLY GENUINE POST. YOU HAVE BEEN WARNED!!!

I did a dummy booking and this is what it said on the payment page:

I clicked on that link and read this:

"The scheme also applies to some flight bookings - usually those where you book flights (including UK domestic flights ) but do not receive your tickets immediately. This is most common with charter flights , but can also apply to discounted scheduled flights or where you pay for flights in installments.

Please note that ATOL does not apply to holidays or flights booked directly with scheduled airlines or to flights booked with airline ticket agents."

I was not offered any option to purchase this protection,

' class=

Thank you. I did put this company name into the Abta check page and it wasn’t listed. I know there was no option for me to purchase Abta protection when I booked, otherwise I would not have booked.,

I have emailed five times and received replies stating that the staff are doing their best to obtain a refund from the airline . The airline in question (a large reputable organisation) have told me that they are refunding cancelled flights upon demand.

I have attempted to phone three times and wait through the queue before being offered an opportunity to record a message without being able to speak to an operator. This is terrible customer service.

When booking tickets with this company six months before the flight I didn’t realise that I was not given an ATOL certificate and so am not able to obtain ATOL support with my claim for a refund.

Avoid this company – they are big trouble.

dream world travel atol protected

They are not the only company that you should avoid, john. Have a look around this forum now you're here and you'll see what I mean.

I wish I had avoided them, but now booked can only hope that all goes smoothly from here. Still trying to get an Atol Certificate though

I now have my reservation number thank you, just would like the Atol Certificate now.

How did you finally get a hold of them?

' class=

But Gulf Air says it refunded DWT directly in March.

DWT now says that, for reasons unclear, it has passed my refund to a third party supplier: "They will send us money through batch processing."

DWT doesn't seem fazed that by not refunding me in a reasonable time it is in breach of our contract and that it has given no timescale for making refunds, in breach of UK government guidelines on consumer law.

Dream World Travel is not a member of ABTA or it seems any other trade body that might set standards or be able to hold it to account.

I booked with it because it was recommended by Momondo. I have contacted Momondo to ask why it is listing and profiting from non-ABTA member outfits that clearly don't have the inclination or resources to operate properly.

Ealing Trading Standards has been very helpful and offered to contact DWT on my behalf. Contact [email protected]

It also concerns me that DWT uses Trust Pilot ratings to promote itself -- and I suspect many of the 5* ones are fake. However, there are many 1* ones too -- but the selection shown on DWT's own website and its Facebook page only show 5* positive ones -- misleading potential new customers (like me) that it has high customer satisfaction, when clearly it does not, even before coronavirus. I'm asking Trust Pilot why it's allowing DWT to promote itself falsely.

The Armoury Chamber is a part of the Grand Kremlin Palace’s complex and is one of the oldest museums of Moscow, established in 1851. It showcases Russian history and displays many cherished relics. Definitely make sure to check out this museum while you’re here!

The Moscow Kremlin

The churches inside the Moscow Kremlin are the Cathedral of the Dormition, Church of the Archangel, Church of the Annunciation, and the bell tower of Ivan Veliki (a church tower).

The five-domed Cathedral of the Dormition is considered the most famous. It was built from 1475–1479 by an Italian architect and has served as a wedding and coronation place for great princes, tsars, and emperors of Russia. Church services are given in the Kremlin’s numerous cathedrals on a regular basis.

The Grand Kremlin Palace was the former Tsar’s Moscow residence and today it serves as the official workplace of the President of the Russian Federation (Vladimir Putin seems to have bagged that title for life) .

This iconic cathedral has become a symbol of Russia due to its distinguishing architecture and prominent position inside the Red Square. It’s one of the most beautiful, wonderful, and mesmerizing historical cathedrals in the world!

St. Basils Cathedral

The interior of the church surprises most people when they visit. In contrast to the large exterior, the inside is not so much one large area, but rather a collection of smaller areas, with many corridors and small rooms. There are 9 small chapels and one mausoleum grouped around a central tower.

Visiting the inside is like walking through a maze, there are even small signs all around the cathedral tracing where to walk, and pointing you in the right direction! The walls are meticulously decorated and painted with intricate floral designs and religious themes.

The church rarely holds service and is instead a museum open for the public to visit.

The Alexander Garden

  • A tranquil place to relax near the Red Square
  • Green lawns dotted with sculptures and lovely water features
  • The park is open every day and has no entrance fee

The Alexander Garden was one of the first urban public parks in Moscow! The garden premiered in 1821 and was built to celebrate Russia’s victory over Napoleon’s forces in 1812!

The park is beautiful and well maintained with paths to walk on and benches to rest on. The park contains three separate gardens: the upper garden, middle garden, and lower garden.

The Alexander Garden

Located in the upper garden, towards the main entrance to the park is the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier with its eternal flame. This monument was created in 1967 and contains the body of a soldier who fell during the Great Patriotic War!

The park stretches along all the length of the western Kremlin wall for about half a mile. Due to its central location in the city, it’ll be easily accessible when you’re out exploring The Red Square.

It provides a bit of relief from the city’s high-energy city streets. Bring a picnic lunch, go for a walk, or just sit and people watch, this is one of the best Moscow sites to wind-down and relax!

Ostankino Television Tower

  • Television and radio tower in Moscow

Ostankino Television Tower

It takes just 58 seconds for visitors to reach the Tower’s observation deck by super fast elevator. The tower is open every day for long hours and is a great site in Moscow to check out! There is even a restaurant at the top where you can enjoy rotating views of the city while you dine on traditional Russian cuisine or European cuisine!

The tower is somewhat of an architectural surprise in a city that is not known for skyscrapers! To see the city from a new perspective, make sure to add this stop to your Moscow itinerary!

Izmaylovo District

  • The most popular attractions in this district are the kremlin and the flea market
  • Outside of the city center and easy to reach via metro
  • Most popular during the summer and on weekends

Travel outside the city center and discover a unique area of the city! The Izmaylovo District is a popular destination for locals and tourists alike, and one of the coolest places to see in Moscow! The two main attractions we recommend checking out are the Kremlin and the flea market.

The Izmailovo Kremlin was established as a cultural center and molded after traditional Russian architecture. This colorful complex is home to several single-subject museums, including a Russian folk art museum and a vodka museum!

Next to the Kremlin is the Izmailovo open-air market, which dates back to the 17th century! The market is connected to the Izmailovo Kremlin by a wooden bridge. Pick up all your Russian souvenirs here, including traditional handicrafts, paintings, books, retro toys, and Soviet memorabilia!

You will find many hand-made and hand-painted options available at higher prices, as well as mass-produced souvenir options at lower prices!

Museum of Soviet Arcade Games

For something a little different, check out the Museum of Soviet Arcade Games! The museum features roughly 60 machines from the Soviet era, including video games, pinball machines, and collaborative hockey foosball! The machines inside the museum were produced in the USSR in the mid-1970s.

Museum of Soviet Arcade Games

The best part is, most of the games are still playable! Purchase tickets and try the games out for yourself! The museum also has a neat little screening room that plays old Soviet cartoons and an area with Soviet magazines! This unique attraction is a fun addition to a 3 day itinerary in Moscow, and an attraction that all ages will enjoy!

Whether you’re spending one day in Moscow, or more, safety is an important thing to keep in mind when traveling to a big city! Overall, Moscow is a very safe place to visit. However, it is always recommended that tourists take certain precautions when traveling to a new destination!

The police in Moscow is extremely effective at making the city a safe place to visit and do their best to patrol all of the top Moscow, Russia tourist attractions. However, tourists can still be a target for pickpockets and scammers.

Moscow has a huge flow of tourists, therefore there is a risk for pickpocketing. Simple precautions will help eliminate your chances of being robbed. Stay vigilant, keep your items close to you at all times, and don’t flash your valuables!

If you’re planning a solo Moscow itinerary, you should have no need to worry, as the city is also considered safe for solo travelers, even women. Stay in the populated areas, try and not travel alone late at night, and never accept rides from strangers or taxis without a meter and correct signage.

The threat of natural disasters in Moscow is low, with the exception of severe winters when the temperature can dip below freezing! Bring a good, warm jacket if you visit in Winter.

However, please note that Russian views on homsexuality are far less accepting than those in Western Europe. Likewise, Non-Caucasian travellers may sadly encounter racism in Russia .

Don’t Forget Your Travel Insurance for Moscow

ALWAYS sort out your backpacker insurance before your trip. There’s plenty to choose from in that department, but a good place to start is Safety Wing .

They offer month-to-month payments, no lock-in contracts, and require absolutely no itineraries: that’s the exact kind of insurance long-term travellers and digital nomads need.

In just three days, this Moscow itinerary takes in all the most iconic sights of this attraction-packed destination. After two and half days getting acquainted with the city, we’ve set time aside for you to explore Moscow your way and discover your own favourite hang-outs in a city overflowing with hidden treasures

3-Day Moscow Tour Highlights:

  • Panoramic Tour of Moscow: See Moscow beyond the postcard images on a private excursion by car through the city streets including a drive along the banks of the Moskva River. Visit the famous Bolshoi Theatre, pass by Gorky Park and the Novodevichy Convent, and admire the city from on high at the Sparrow Hill observation platform.
  • Moscow Historical City Centre Guided Walking Tour : Immerse yourself in the atmosphere of one of the world’s biggest metropolises and discover local haunts on foot, including the Red Square, the Kremlin and the multi-coloured domes of St Basil’s Cathedral.
  • Armory Chamber tour: Explore the endless treasures of this unique museum, displaying the wealth accumulated by Russian rulers from the 12th century until the October Revolution of 1917. Walking through the exhibition halls is a journey through the centuries.
  • Moscow Metro Tour : Go deep underground on a subway tour of the famous Moscow metro. The world’s deepest metro system is renowned for its palatial, art-adorned stations, complete with marble columns and chandeliers.

On your first day, you’ll be treated to a panoramic, drive-by tour of Moscow to get a feel for the immense scale of one of the world’s most rapidly developing urban centres. The city’s history unfolds in real-time as you pass lavish imperial mansions, solemn Soviet structures and luxurious modern shopping centres.

Day two kicks off exploring Moscow’s historic centre on foot, followed by a tour of the Kremlin, the seat of Russian power and political intrigue for centuries. Stand in the Red Square, surrounded by the stunning architecture as you hear stories of the people and events behind many of Moscow’s most iconic landmarks.

On your final day, we’ll head beneath the city for a tour of the Moscow Metro and its famously ornate underground stations. Art lovers should hit up one of Moscow’s many world-class galleries such as the Tretyakov State Gallery, the Pushkin Museum or Garage, Moscow’s cutting-edge contemporary art museum. History fans can follow a Soviet trail through the city including Stalin’s Bunker, while those seeking a more indulgent experience can browse trendy neighbourhoods like Kitay Gorod or shop for everything from fashion to kitsch souvenirs at the enchanting Izmaylovo Flea Market. Foodies can head to one of the countless speciality stores sampling vodka, caviar and chocolate.

Russia Moscow Tour

Day 1 Panoramic city tour

Welcome to the glorious capital of Russia, Moscow! You’ll be met by your driver at the airport and taken to your centrally located hotel.

After check-in and rest, meet your private guide at the hotel lobby for a comprehensive tour of Moscow by car. Visit the starkly contrasting Theatre Square to see the stunning Bolshoi Theatre, pass Tverskaya Street, the city’s main boulevard and home to the landmark Yeleseyevskiy Grocery Store.

You’ll enjoy a panoramic drive along the Moskva River, where a huge, controversial state of Peter the Great was erected. Pass by the legendary Gorky Park and the White House before a stop at the architecturally stunning Novodevichy Convent, and the observation platform at Sparrow Hills, for a bird’s eye view over this staggering megalopolis.

Day 2 Red Square and Kremlin

After breakfast at the hotel, your guide will take you on a walking tour of the historical city centre. Stroll through the Red Square, the hub of cultural life in Moscow, with its elaborate ‘stone flower’ fountain and fantasy-like St Basil’s Cathedral – a postcard-perfect symbol of the nation. Admire the grandiose façade of GUM, the city’s most luxurious shopping centre, and visit Alexander’s Garden, with its eternal flame and the chance to watch a changing of the guards.

Break for lunch before continuing on a tour of the Kremlin and Armoury Chamber, famous of its collection of tsarist fashion, with regalia such as jewel-encrusted crowns, orbs and sceptres as well as arms and armour, exotic gifts from the leaders of faraway lands, and an illustrious case of Imperial Faberge eggs.

As an option* spend an evening on a sumptuous dinner cruise, taking in the stunning sights and city lights of this mesmerising metropolis by night.

Day 3 Metro and Arbat Street

Start a day with a tour of Metro, stopping on the way to marvel at some of the most elaborately decorated stations of the world-famous Moscow subway system. Take a stroll along Old Arbat street - the most famous street in Moscow. Through the centuries Arbat used to be one of the most bohemian places in Moscow. Today Arbat is a promenade full of small cozy cafes and street life.

The afternoon is free for you to either enjoy the rest of the day on your own or choose among optional excursions to explore more of Moscow. Visit the Tretyakov Gallery or Pushkin State Museum to admire Russian art. Join locals for a stroll at the Gorky or VDNH park.

Visit beautiful Kolomeskoye Estate or Izmailovo Kremlin, or spend a day exploring the beautiful city of the Golden Ring (Russian province) - Sergiev Posad. In the evening you will be transferred to the airport for your departure to your next destination.

Moscow Travel Guide

Despite the Soviet past, today’s Moscow is a dynamic, cutting-edge city – and the most populous in Europe. Well-heeled Muscovites flaunt their wealth by sipping Champagne with sushi at elite restaurants and shopping for designer labels at frighteningly expensive boutiques. Meanwhile, a growing middle-class has seen a proliferation of hip bars and trendy cultural centres.

While the Russian capital has striven to move on, recent tensions with the West have stirred up memories of the past. Moscow has previously led the way with protests against Vladimir Putin, but even with the tumbling ruble and economic sanctions, his popularity remains strong.

This doesn’t make Russia a no-go area, and Moscow – with its cosmopolitan, globe-trotting denizens – is not the formidable crucible often depicted. In summer, temperatures soar and the city’s vast parklands flourish. The historic Gorky Park received a complete makeover in 2012, installing free Wi-Fi and even a beach, while the Soviet behemoth that was the Rossiya Hotel has been demolished to make way for an ambitious central park.

Before that project comes to fruition, there is Red Square to marvel at, not least the mind-boggling St Basil’s Cathedral. Built by Ivan the Terrible in the 16th century, its multi-coloured domes and acid-trip patterns seem to defy logic. Nearby is the 14th-century Kremlin and seat of the tsars.

Indeed architecture is one of the city’s main attractions, especially for aficionados of Soviet buildings. All too many have been destroyed to make way for gleaming 21st-century skyscrapers, but Stalin’s unmistakable Seven Sisters still stand tall against the modern towers.

The city is naturally keen to celebrate its great writers, composers and artists too. This sophisticated city boasts world-class institutions like the Bolshoi Theatre, the Moscow Tchaikovsky Conservatory and the Pushkin Museum of Fine Arts.

As for nightlife, the city is becoming increasingly hedonistic – whether jazz, rock or vodka is your thing, there are plenty of options. Even the culinary circuit has come on leaps and bounds, though an evening at one of the city’s growing stable of world-class restaurants requires considerable investment. This is, after all, a capital of oligarchs.

Book Accommodation

Featured hotels, izmailovo (gamma-delta).

Constructed to accommodate visitors to the 1980 Olympics, the concrete towers of the Izmailovo boast a staggering 8,000 rooms. Institutional in atmosphere, and located far out in the northern suburbs, the hotel is handy for the enormous Izmaylovo Market and has decent city centre links. There are several onsite restaurants and in-room Wi-Fi is available too.

Peking Hotel

Built in 1956 as a little sister to Stalin's Seven Sister skyscrapers, and intended as post-war headquarters for the secret police, Moscow's Peking Hotel is a heritage hotel with a small 'h', in a good location just northwest of the centre. Although slightly old-fashioned, its 130 rooms are comfortable enough, with satellite TV and en-suite bathrooms.

Warsaw Hotel

Although its location may not be one of Moscow's most picturesque, the Warsaw Hotel is convenient for Gorky Park. Considering the quality of the competition, this is one of the best cheap options in the city, with clean and comfortable rooms, albeit in a rather dated style. Wi-Fi is complimentary and the Oktyabrskaya Metro station is right next door.

Golden Apple

A boutique hotel on a refreshingly human scale, the Golden Apple offers imaginative styling and a personal touch that many 5-star hotels lack. Behind the baroque facade, its minimalist rooms are cosy, and there's an onsite restaurant and an open-plan bar too. Staff speak excellent English and there's Wi-Fi access, a gym and a sauna.

Historical Hotel Sovietsky

In the 1950s, Joseph Stalin decreed that the famous Yar restaurant should be upgraded to a hotel and the Historical Hotel Sovietsky was born. It quickly became a showcase for the image of sophistication that the Soviet government wished to present to the world, and its 107 rooms still conjures up the nostalgia of this period in history.

Hotel Danilovsky

It's hard to imagine a more atmospheric place to stay than the 12-century precincts of the historic Danilovsky Monastery. Set amidst chapels and gardens, the hotel is a modern construction, but the rooms are comfortable and all have a view of the stately monastery buildings. There's a sauna and bar onsite too.
