London’s Tube network has been largely out of action during Thursday, as thousands of union members stage a 24-hour walkout due to a dispute over jobs and pensions.

Transport for London ( TfL ) have said that most Tube lines are suspended due to the RMT and Unite walkout, with just two or three branches of some lines in operation.

Alternative travel is available on buses, the Elizabeth Line and some parts of the London Overground - but travellers are warned these services will be extremely busy.

Knock-on disruption is expected to continue until mid-morning on Friday.

Mick Lynch, RMT general secretary, accused the employers of failing to make compromises. He said: “TfL have missed a golden opportunity to make progress in these negotiations and avoid strike action on Thursday.

“Our members are resolute in their determination to see a just settlement to this jobs and pensions dispute and they will continue their industrial campaign for as long as it takes.”

Tube strikes: When are London Underground walkouts and which lines are affected?

Further strikes announced for late November

ASLEF – the train drivers’ union – has announced another Saturday strike for 26 November.

Citing “a dispute over pay”, ASLEF says: “negotiators have been engaged in talks with the industry but there has, so far, been no offer on pay”.

Mick Whelan, general secretary, said: “We regret that passengers will be inconvenienced for another day. We don’t want to be taking this action. Withdrawing our labour is always a last resort for a trade union.

“We have come to the table, as we always will, in good faith but while the industry continues to make no offer – due to the dodgy deal they signed with the DfT – we have no choice but to take strike action again.

“They want drivers to take a real terms pay cut. With inflation now well into double figures, train drivers who kept Britain moving through the pandemic are now being expected to work just as hard this year as last year but for less. Most of these drivers have not had an increase in salary since 2019.

“We want the companies – which are making huge profits – to make a proper pay offer so that our members can keep up with the cost of living.”

Which Tube lines are running as rush hour approaches?

Most Tube lines are completely suspended this afternoon.

However, there is a reduced service running on the Central Line : between Hainault - Woodford, Hainault - Liverpool Street, Epping - Leytonstone, White City - Ealing Broadway and North Acton - West Ruislip.

Infrequent trains are running on the District Line between Dagenham East and West Ham, with the rest of the line closed.

The top branches of the Northern Line are seeing some trains: between High Barnet and East Finchley, Finchley Central and Mill Hill East, and Edgware and Golders Green.

There is a good service on the Elizabeth Line , although TfL has warned that it expects the line to be extremely busy. Trains will also not call at stations between Bond Street and Whitechapel before 07:00 and after 22:30 on Thursday.

DLR and tram services are also seeing a good service.

‘Staff consistently outscore other elements of TfL’s performance’ says RMT

The RMT union has shared TfL data showing passenger perceptions of the operator’s service and performance, saying that satisfaction with staff remains high.

“Here’s a fascinating graphic from @TfL in October this year,” posted the RMT to its official Twitter account.

“Passenger satisfaction with @TfL is on a downward trend EXCEPT in relation to their experience of its staff. Staff consistently outscore other elements of @TfL ’s performance.”

It posted a graphic showing various aspects of TfL performance being rated by customers from 2021 and into 2022. The highest performing aspect was staff helpfulness and friendliness; the lowest ranked statement was “TfL supports its customers when things go wrong.”

“Yet London Underground is cutting station staff, attacking agreements that control working conditions and working with the government to attack workers’ pensions. Plus it still outsources its cleaners,” wrote the RMT staffer.

Elizabeth line experiences its busiest day – with delays and overcrowding

Tens of thousands of commuters have been sampling London’s Elizabeth line for the first time – as it is the one east-west rail route through the capital that is still working. The new route is not affected by today’s strike.

But disruption is happening, particularly on the leg linking Liverpool Street and Whitechapel with Woolwich and Abbey Wood.

While there are supposed to be trains every seven or eight minutes, some intervals have been as long as 20 minutes – with consequent overcrowding.

This has also led to bunching, with some trains running, almost completely empty, just 90 seconds behind others.

Transport for London insists a “good service” is running on the Elizabeth line, which connects stations in the southeast of the capital with Heathrow airport and Reading in the west.

But it warns: “Elizabeth line services are not calling at stations between Bond Street and Whitechapel after 10.30pm”. This covers the central core of the line.

Jeremy Corbyn shows support to strikers

Labour MPs including former Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn and former Shadow Chancellor of the Exchequer John McDonnell have shared their support for the striking Tube workers on social media.

Mr Corbyn tweeted: “Victory to the @RMTunion!” alongside a picture of him holding up an Islington Trades Union Council banner.

Meanwhile, Mr McDonnell said: “Joined RMT picket lines this morning at Hounslow West, Acton & Northfields to support RMT members on strike on London Underground. Strike solid. Solidarity.”

When will Tube strike end?

Although today’s Tube strike is only for 24 hours, as with previous walkouts, London Underground services are likely to be severely impacted into Friday morning.

Transport for London says of 11 November: “Services affected by Thursday’s strikes are expected to return to normal by mid-morning.”

Because Tube trains won’t be in position, it’s expected it will take time for regular services to resume. Commuters are told to check their travel plans ahead of time.

Heavy traffic by Blackwall Tunnel and A4 West London

Pockets of heavy traffic have built up this morning as commuters try to get into and around the capital without using the Tube network.

Ru Roberts, UK country manager at Waze , said:“London commuters will face substantial delays across the capital today, due to the tube strikes and knock-on effects of protests along the M25.

“Our Waze map shows bumper-to-bumper traffic on the A102 in the Blackwall Tunnel area, with speeds as low as 5 mph. Heavy traffic can also be seen on the A4 in West London, with reported speeds of 5 mph.

“We expect disruption to continue for the next 24 hours, so where possible, avoid travelling during peak hours, plan your journey ahead of time and consider a route which may be longer in miles but fewer in cars.”

Londoners post supportive messages despite Tube disruption

Many Londoners have been posting on social media in support of the RMT and Unite members walking out today.

“Final leg of my commute - from Waterloo - will take longer today due to the #TubeStrike. But in the grand scheme of things it’s nothing but a minor inconvenience,” wrote Al McDonald on Twitter.

“Fair play to the @RMTunion for taking action. Their pay and conditions are our pay and conditions. Solidarity.”

“It’s noticeable how few Londoners are moaning about the Tube strike,” wrote another user, Yousef.

“Yes it’s inconvenient. But millions of us support the men & women standing up for their rights & pay. All power to them. They don’t do this lightly or because they want to. Up the Workers.”

Meanwhile, Ryan Perrin wrote: “Rely on the railway and tubes everyday for work, so another strike today is not hugely convenient for me. However, I could not be more behind @RMTunion and what they’re trying to achieve. Keep fighting guys. Up The Workers.”

More disruption in coming weeks

Cancellations on the Underground will continue until Friday morning – and nationwide several more bouts of industrial action will halt rail services in the coming days and weeks.

Transport for London says: “Disruption will continue into the morning of Friday 11 November, with affected services expected to return to a normal service by mid-morning.”

Staff at ScotRail are currently refusing overtime as part of a dispute over pay. ScotRail says: “The action short of a strike will see some daily cancellations, as the operation of ScotRail services requires rest day working and overtime as recruitment continues.”

Members of the RMT union employed by Network Rail at the Thames Valley Signal Centre will strike on Saturday 19 and Monday 21 November – affecting travellers between London, the West of England and South Wales.

Great Western Railway says: “A reduced service will operate between 7.30am and 6.30pm on most parts of the network, and the last trains will be earlier than usual.”

The train drivers’ union, Aslef has withdrawn all non-contractual overtime at LNER on the East Coast main line from Sunday 27 November, in a dispute over terms and conditions .

Mick Whelan, Aslef’s general secretary, said: “The company has shown a complete disregard for the agreements which shape our members’ working lives.”

Warrick Dent, safety and operations director at the state-run train operator, said: “We are focused on running reliable services for our customers.

“We believe that these matters are best resolved between LNER and Aslef through discussion rather than further industrial action which only damages the rail industry.”

Cycle trouble as bike docking stations fill up

With no Tube trains running, many commuters from the inner suburbs of London have switched to Santander Cycles – the capital’s main “rent it here, leave it there” scheme.

But when they arrive in the City of London or the West End, they are waiting around disconsolately trying to find somewhere to dock the bikes.

Unlike other cycle hire systems, which have no limits on capacity, Transport for London’s Santander operation has a limited number of docking spaces – and there are simply no vacancies.

In some locations, such as Waterloo and King’s Cross stations and on the north side of Southwark Bridge, TfL staff are coping with the demand by moving large numbers of bikes out of the docking stands. But significant space is not likely to become available until the evening rush-hour.

The Independent ’s Head of Travel, Helen Coffey, visited four docking stations before she was able to find a space for her bike.

London Tube strikes: All you need to know

  • Published 20 March
  • London tube strikes

A closed London Underground station

Aslef Tube drivers are set to strike in April and May

London Underground services are set to face disruption in April and May as train drivers plan to strike over working conditions.

Member of the Aslef union are staging two 24-hour walkouts.

Here's what you need to know about the industrial action.

What dates are the strikes happening?

Aslef union, which represents more than 2,000 London Underground drivers, said members would walk out on 8 April and 4 May.

Each strike will last 24 hours, it said.

All you need to know about April train strikes

Tube drivers to strike in April and May - Aslef

Will the strike affect rail services?

Aslef also announced train driver strikes at 16 rail companies.

One of the train strike days - 8 April - coincides with the planned Tube strikes.

Aslef said the 8 April train strike would impact c2c, Greater Anglia, GTR Great Northern Thameslink, Southeastern, Southern/Gatwick Express, South Western Railway main line and depot drivers, and SWR Island Line.

What will be the impact?

When Aslef go out on a Tube strike, there is significant disruption as many drivers will not go to work. Sometimes no Tube lines can run at all.

On previous strike days Tube lines have been shut down, with commuters turning to buses, bicycles, trams, or working from home.

Is the mayoral election voting day impacted?

Voting for the mayoral election runs from between 07:00 BST and 22:00 on Thursday 2 May.

The strikes do not coincide with election day.

Why is the union striking?

Finn Brennan, of Aslef, said the action was part of a "long-running dispute" over working conditions.

Mr Brennan said: "Despite a previous commitment to withdraw plans for massive changes to drivers' working conditions, London Underground management has established a full-time team of managers preparing to impose their plans.

"They want drivers to work longer shifts, spending up to 25% more time in the cab, and to remove all current working agreements.

"It's about getting people to work harder and longer for less."

What does Transport for London say?

TfL has been approached for comment about the latest strikes.

Bank holiday rail chaos as passengers urged not to travel to or from Euston

‘Severe signalling failure’ leads to delays and cancellations, which are expected to last all day

All lines between Milton Keynes and Watford Junction, the southern half of the West Coast Main Line, were briefly closed on Monday morning

Bank holiday travellers are facing rail chaos, with passengers being urged not to travel to or from London Euston station .

Avanti West Coast said travellers should avoid using its services on Monday to travel to or from Euston, one of the top 10 busiest railway stations in the country.

The operator said: “Due to a severe signalling failure in the Cheddington area, we are advising customers not to travel to or from London Euston.” It added that passengers with tickets dated for Monday could use them on Tuesday instead.

All lines between Milton Keynes and Watford Junction, the southern half of the West Coast Main Line, were briefly closed on Monday morning. They have since reopened, although travellers are being warned of cancellations and delays of up to an hour for the rest of Monday.

King’s Cross London Underground station was forced to close on Sunday after football fans reportedly set off flares inside , setting off the fire alarms and causing major disruption.

It comes after widespread disruption affected Euston on the Friday of the bank holiday weekend after thieves tried to steal signalling cables from the West Coast Main Line, triggering signal failures.

The problems affected passengers travelling with five separate train companies, including Avanti West Coast , CrossCountry, London Northwestern Railway, Transport for Wales and West Midlands Railway.

Services on the line, the busiest mixed freight and passenger railway route in western Europe, were already set to be reduced because of planned Network Rail engineering works around Crewe and Carlisle.

A £24 million upgrade project is under way to refurbish drains and carry out other maintenance works intended to make the trains more reliable in the future, and less susceptible to delays and cancellations caused by track faults and failures.

Network Rail has said it often carries out major engineering work over bank holiday periods to reduce the number of passengers impacted.

On the roads, Inrix, a transport analytics company, said it expected to see 3.4 million car journeys during bank holiday Monday as sunseekers returned home from the three-day weekend. The RAC said the worst time for congestion on Monday would be between 11am and 2pm.

U.S. State Department issues worldwide travel alert

The U.S. State Department issued a worldwide cautionary alert late last week for any Americans traveling outside of the country.

In the alert, issued May 17, the department warned U.S. citizens traveling overseas to “exercise increased caution,” due to the possibility of “terrorist attacks, demonstrations, or violent actions against U.S. citizens and interests.”

In particular, the department said it “is aware of the increased potential for foreign terrorist organization-inspired violence against LGBTQI+ persons and events and advises U.S. citizens overseas to exercise increased caution.”

Travelers in foreign countries are advised to stay alert in tourist-heavy locations, “including Pride celebrations and venues frequented by LGBTQI+ persons.”

The State Department also encourages travelers to enroll in its Smart Traveler Enrollment program, which gives out travel information and alerts, and can make it easier for you to be located in the event of an emergency.

It also recommends following the department on Facebook and X for the latest updates.

The hydrogen race has a new, low-cost, underground runner.

The case for producing hydrogen from underground reservoirs in the same way natural gas is produced took a step forward last week with the successful testing in Australia of an exploration well which flowed high purity hydrogen and helium.

If underground (or natural) hydrogen can be produced at a commercial level, and at a reasonable cost, it could imperil plans to manufacture hydrogen as an oil and gas replacement.

A hydrogen pipeline.

The Ramsay project of Gold Hydrogen reported flows to the surface of both hydrogen and helium from drilling on the Yorke Peninsula across St Vincent Gulf from the South Australian capital, Adelaide.

The company said natural hydrogen with purity levels up to 95.8% hydrogen had been encountered across seven zones with the highest purity at a depth of 1740 feet (531 metres).

“Natural hydrogen and helium flowed to the surface, achieving the primary objective before formation water encroachment impeded further flow testing,” Gold Hydrogen said in a statement filed at the Australian Stock Exchange.

“This is a crucial result ahead of stage two testing.”

The Ramsay project is following up reports of naturally occurring hydrogen in oil wells drilled in the 1920s and 30s.

Theory Confirmed

Gold Hydrogen managing director, Neil McDonald, said in a statement that to test seven zones in Ramsay from 200 meters to 1000 meters and to have confirmed natural hydrogen can be extracted to the surface from all seven zones, plus confirming that helium can be extracted to surface from a 180m gross thick pay zone is a remarkable result.

Interest in underground hydrogen, which can also be called natural or white hydrogen, has been growing as the gas itself is increasingly seen as having a future in decarbonizing the environment.

The challenge for everyone involved is to find a way of producing hydrogen at an affordable price.

Gold Hydrogen believes that the naturally occurring form of the gas can be produced at a cost of less than $1 per kilogram, a fraction of the $3.70/kg cost for hydrogen produced from natural gas, $4.20/kg from coal or prices ranging from $4.22/kg up to $16.80/kg using renewable energy to break down water by electrolysis

While only a small company with a stock market value of just $85 million (A$125 million) Gold Hydrogen has impeccable management connections and a share price which has doubled since the start of the year, as well as being 400% higher than this time last year.

Its chairman is Alexander Downer, a former Australian foreign minister and former Australian High Commissioner in London, a posting which in 2016 briefly put him in touch with George Papadopoulos who was working for the presidential election campaign of Donald Trump.

It was that encounter which eventually led to an international ruckus and an inquiry led by special counsel Robert Mueller.

Downer has moved on from the political and diplomatic phase of his career to now be developing other interests that include chairmanship of Gold Hydrogen, the uranium investment company, Yellowcake, and chairman of the International School of Government at Kings College, London.

U.S. reissues ‘do not travel’ warning for popular South American destination

U.S. travel officials are telling Americans to avoid traveling to a popular South American vacation destination.

The U.S. Department of State reissued a “Level 4: Do Not Travel” advisory , the highest classification of travel warnings, for Venezuela due to “crime, civil unrest, kidnapping, and the arbitrary enforcement of local laws.”

Wrongful detentions, terrorism, and poor health infrastructure are also reasons to avoid Venezuela, officials said. The notice is the latest move by the U.S., which withdrew all diplomatic personnel from U.S. Embassy Caracas and suspended operations in March 2019.

“All consular services, routine and emergency, remain suspended until further notice. The U.S. government has no ability to provide emergency services to U.S. citizens in Venezuela,” the travel advisory said. “U.S. citizens in Venezuela who require consular assistance should try to leave the country as soon as safely possible to do so and should contact a U.S. embassy or consulate in another country.”

Venezuela has been in turmoil with random demonstrations and political rallies against Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro happening without notice.

Maduro is seeking a third term in office in the country’s July elections, but he hasn’t been popular with many. Under Maduro’s tenure as president, millions of people have fallen into poverty and more than 7.7 million others have tried to flee the country, according to The Associated Press.

Anti-Maduro demonstrations have elicited a strong police and security force response, including the use of tear gas, pepper spray, and rubber bullets against participants, and occasionally devolve into looting and vandalism, officials said.

Shortages of gasoline, electricity, water, medicine, and medical supplies continue throughout much of Venezuela, U.S. officials said.

Additionally, Colombian terrorist groups operate in Venezuela’s border areas with Colombia, Brazil, and Guyana.

If you must travel to Venezuela:

  • Avoid all land border crossings into Venezuela on the Colombian border.
  • Ensure you have a valid Venezuelan visa. Visas are not available upon arrival.
  • Be prepared for the high risk of indefinite detention without consular access.
  • Draft a will and designate appropriate insurance beneficiaries and/or power of attorney.
  • Develop a communication plan with family and/or your employer or host organization. Establish a “proof of life” protocol with your loved ones, so that if you are taken hostage, your loved ones know specific questions (and answers) to ask the hostage-takers to be sure that you are alive (and to rule out a hoax).
  • Have a contingency plan in place that does not rely on U.S. government assistance.
  • Keep travel documents up to date and easily accessible.
  • Avoid travel between cities, or between Simón Bolívar International Airport and Caracas at night.
  • Do not take unregulated taxis from the Maiquetia “Simón Bolívar” International Airport and avoid ATMs in this area.
  • Consider hiring a professional security organization.
  • Bring a sufficient supply of over the counter and prescription medicines for the duration of travel.
  • Consider purchasing medical evacuation insurance.

Severe weather slows Memorial Day travel around NYC. Maps and live radar show the current conditions.

By Matthew DeLucia

Updated on: May 28, 2024 / 12:19 AM EDT / CBS New York

NEW YORK --  Thunderstorms and flash flood risks  were in the forecast Monday around the Tri-State Area as people made their way home from Memorial Day weekend travel .

The CBS New York First Alert Weather team extended its Red Alert due to severe weather risks. Flood advisories were issued for Bergen, Essex, Orange, Passaic and Rockland counties late Monday night.

fa-red-alert-2.png

A severe thunderstorm watch for most of the area ended at 9 p.m.

Strong storms in Pennsylvania prompted tornado warnings that could've reached New Jersey, but the storm lost some intensity once it reached our area.

cbs-2023-1.png

Stay up to date with the  latest forecast and live radar here .

Weather today calls for thunderstorms, possible tornado

We saw a cloudy start to the day, along with some dense fog in spots along the coast. A few showers and thunderstorms continued to move through north/east of the city, with another batch in southern New Jersey.

jl-fa-3-part-timeline-1-2.png

Meanwhile, clouds thinned out to the west, which only helped fuel the second round of storms for the afternoon. We had a bit of a lull until then, although a shower or storm was still possible at any time (we call that pre-frontal convection).

md-futurelocal-2pm.png

More storms fired up to our west in Pennsylvania after 1 p.m. or so. The window of concern shifted slightly earlier compared to over the weekend, from approximately 2 p.m. to 9 p.m. from west to east (2 p.m. western N.J., exiting the east end 9 p.m.).

md-severe-risk.png

Main concerns are for heavy rain and damaging winds, but an isolated tornado cannot be ruled out.

Wednesday: Sun and clouds. PM showers or storms possible. Highs in the mid to upper 70s.

fa-7-day-33.png

How long will cicadas be around this year? Here's when to expect Brood XIX, XIII to die off

live underground travel news

Trillions of periodical cicadas from two broods are emerging from their underground habitats in over a dozen states this year, filling the air and creating a lot of noise in the process.

There are two broods hitting a combined 17 states this year: the 13-year Brood XIX located mainly in the Southeast, and the 17-year Brood XIII in the Midwest. The two broods, which have not emerged together since 1803, will be found in both Illinois and Iowa.

You may have already seen some of these cicadas emerging, but how long will they be around this year, and how long do they stay underground between emergence years?

Here's what to know about a cicada's life, both under and above ground.

2024 cicada map: See where Brood XIX, XIII cicadas are emerging around the US

When do cicadas emerge?

According to  Cicada Mania , the cicadas begin to emerge from their underground habitats when the soil 8 inches underground reaches 64 degrees, and are often triggered by a warm rain.

Thanks to warm temperatures, cicadas have already been spotted above ground in states across the Southeast and Midwest.

Can you eat cicadas? Try these tasty recipes with Brood XIX, Brood XIII this summer

How long will the cicadas be above ground?

How long cicadas live depends on their brood and if they are an annual or periodical species.

The two periodical broods this summer are Brood XIX, which have a 13-year life cycle, and Brood XIII, which have a 17-year life cycle.

Once male and female periodical cicadas have mated and the latter has laid its eggs, the insects will die after spending only a few weeks above ground − anywhere from three to six weeks after first emerging.

That means many of this year's periodical cicadas are set to die in June, though some could die off in late May or July, depending on when they emerged.

The nymphs of annual cicadas remain underground for two to five years , according to the Missouri Department of Conservation. These cicadas are called " annual " because some members of the species emerge as adults each year.

What is the life cycle of a cicada?

The life cycle of a cicada starts with mating. The female then lays eggs in holes made in tree branches and shrubs,  National Geographic reports . The eggs will hatch after six to 10 weeks and the cicada nymphs will burrow themselves into the ground, attaching to the tree's roots.

The cicadas will remain underground for a " dormant period " of two to 17 years, depending on the species. Then they emerge in adult form, according to National Geographic.

2024 emergence map: Check out where Broods XIX, XIII are emerging

The two cicada broods were projected to emerge in a combined 17 states across the South and Midwest. They emerge once the soil eight inches underground reaches 64 degrees, expected to begin in many states in May and lasting through late June.

The two broods  last emerged together in 1803 , when Thomas Jefferson was president.
