Thailand Tours & Vacations

Two women talking with their guide next to the buddhas at the WatPho temple

Thailand is an idyllic paradise, where jungle-covered karsts plunge into aquamarine waters and the sand is sugar white.

But no matter how clichéd the fantasy, Thailand delivers in spades. The water around Krabi and Ko Tao really is that deep, cool shade of blue. Phi Phi’s limestone karsts really do look like some alien world. And the food? Let’s just say your local Pad Thai has nothing on Chiang Mai’s street stalls or the floating markets of Amphawa, where little old ladies do things with fish sauce and chili you never thought possible. From the waterfalls of Erawan to a homestay with the hill tribes of the Golden Triangle, these adventures go beyond the tourist traps. Buckle up.

Best time to visit thailand.

Thailand's climate is generally hot, humid, and at times (like other South East Asian countries) monsoonal. The seasons differ from coast to coast, so depending on which areas you're visiting, the weather can vary.

Thailand's mainland region is great to visit from November to February when the weather is cooler and dryer.

If you are planning on visiting the Gulf Coast (east), avoid the northeast monsoon that brings rain from October to January. For destinations like Phuket on the west side of the peninsula, the best time is November to April to avoid the other monsoon which causes Thailand's wet season from May to October.

Culture and customs

Often considered the epicenter of Buddhism, religion permeates daily life in Thailand. Sprinkled throughout the country are thousands of golden temples, where you’ll find Buddhist monks in orange robes walking the streets. Young men are expected to spend some time as a monk as it bestows honor on their families. Visitors should be respectful of monks and dress modestly when visiting a temple (cover your knees and shoulders and remove your shoes).

Like other Asian nations, the concept of ‘saving face’ is important. This means avoiding conflict or embarrassment in order to preserve social standing, dignity, and honor. Thai people will go out of their way to avoid ‘losing face’. Losing your temper or raising your voice are surefire ways to lose face and can be perceived as volatile or rude.

Eating and drinking

Thai food has everything from spicy dishes packed with chilis to milder coconut-based curries. With street stalls and night markets all over the country, it's really easy to pick up a snack wherever you are in Thailand. On many Intrepid trips, you'll be given the opportunity to have dinner with a local family – this offers a great chance to see how meals are prepared and learn more about the local culture. Go a step further on our 8-day Thailand Read Food Adventure to watch, eat, prepare, and present tasty and traditional Thai cuisine.

Things to try in Thailand

1. Pad Thai (Phat Thai)

A well-known dish but for good reason. This delicious plate of stir-fried rice noodles garnished with peanuts is full of flavor and can be served with fresh prawns, chicken, tofu, or vegetables.

2. Tom Yum (Tom Yam)

Usually prepared with stock, lemongrass, kaffir lime leaves, and chili, this soup is widely available in Thailand and has been popularised around the world.

3. Green curry

One of many curries that Thais do so well. Green curry consists of chicken, Thai eggplant, and chilies bathed in a coconut milk-based sauce.

4. Som tam (green papaya salad)

This northern dish of shredded raw papaya, cherry tomatoes, and green beans is a tantalizing mix of sweet, spicy, and sour flavors.

5. Coconut water

For a super fresh thirst quencher, try coconut water straight from the husk.

6. Tropical fruit

Fruit shakes and fresh fruit juices are widely available from markets and restaurants – make the most of all the tropical fruits of Thailand.

Geography and environment

Sharing borders with South East Asian neighbors  Cambodia ,   Laos ,   Malaysia   , and   Myanmar   (Burma), Thailand's natural environment varies greatly from region to region. From the steamy jungles and misty highlands in the north to the white sand beaches and picturesque islands of the south, Thailand's everchanging landscape has been fascinating and entertaining travelers for centuries.

The capital, Bangkok, is a heaving, urban jungle with skyscrapers, street vendors, markets, cars, tuk-tuks, bicycles, and masses of people all competing for space. Despite this, there are pockets of quiet beauty to be found with parks, temples, and traditional shop fronts scattered throughout the city.

Rural areas in the north are typically quieter, with locals living a more traditional way of life; the frenetic pace of the city giving way to a more slow-paced, agricultural-based lifestyle. Houses are simple, there's more space and less of the modern conveniences. Jungles, rivers, bamboo huts, and teak houses are more commonly seen here, and birds and other animal life are more abundant.

History and government

Early history.

Communities based on agriculture (such as rice growing) inhabited Siam (Thailand) as early as the 6th century. In the following centuries, Siam came under the influence of the Khmer, Dvaravati, and Malay cultures, with some temples and monuments in modern-day Thailand showing evidence of this influence. In the 13th century, the city of Sukhothai in northern Thailand became an important capital. The ruins of the Sukhothai Historical Park (a UNESCO World Heritage site) feature remnants of the royal palace, temples, and other buildings and highlight the artistic and architectural features of the era.

Ayutthaya rose to prominence as the new capital in the 14th century and was considered a powerhouse of South East Asia as one of the most important centers of trade in the world. Enduring many battles, invasions, overthrows, and coups, Ayutthaya's far-reaching trade with other regions ensured a flourishing influence of art, weaponry, religion, and cuisine. Much wealth was generated by this enormous empire, with grand palaces, ornate buildings, and huge temples featured throughout the city. All this came to an end when the Burmese invaded in the 18th century, bringing the kingdom to ruin and resulting in the loss of many artistic and cultural treasures. Despite this, the ruins of the city are still standing, have been declared a UNESCO World Heritage site, and are a great day trip from Bangkok. See the sights of ancient and recent Thai history during a 3 day River Kwai and Ancient Thai Kingdoms tour.

Recent history

Thonburi was established as the capital of Siam by General Taksin in the late 18th century, yet this didn't last long with Taksim being deposed and executed not long after. Bangkok was then named capital by General Chakri, who became Rama I - the first king of the Rama Dynasty.

Over the years, Siam (Thailand) remained the only South East Asian country to remain free from European colonization. In 1932, the Siamese Revolution resulted in a constitutional monarchy being formed, and in 1941, Thailand invaded French Indochina, overpowered the French, and claimed Laos.

In the last thirty years, Thailand has seen political power change hands many times, often due to coups, revolutions, and protests. Despite this, Thailand’s economy continues to grow due to its strong tourist industry. Enduring all this, the much-loved King Rama IX has reigned as the Head of State since 1946 - claiming the title of the longest-reigning monarch in the world and providing Thai people with a stable figure to rely upon.

6. Sukhothai

This former capital is a history buff's heaven. Nicknamed the 'Dawn of Happiness', Sukhothai still recalls Siam's golden age with its superb statues, marvelous monuments, and lotus flowers in full bloom. A trip to the night market is a real eye-opener; try everything from fried rice to fried bugs.

Coast through the must-see sights of Phang Nga Bay on our 8 day Phuket Sailing Adventure.

Bustling street markets filled with colorful vendors selling an assortment of goods can be found in small villages and large towns throughout the country. Luxurious, multi-level shopping malls that rival those in European cities are increasingly popping up.

The Chatuchak Weekend Market in Bangkok is perhaps the largest and most extensive market in the world. Here vendors sell everything you can think of, from ceramics to Thai silk to vintage clothing. Bartering is expected at markets and most small vendors. As a rule of thumb, if the price isn’t listed, it’s negotiable. But remember, Thais appreciate friendliness and a sense of humor. The more aggressive you are in trying to get a deal, the less likely you are to get one.

Things to buy in Thailand

  • Vibrant fabric cushions, tablecloths, and hammocks
  • Silver jewelry (look for reputable stores)
  • Handcrafted umbrellas or parasols
  • Thai silk scarves, ties, wraps, and clothing
  • Colorful Celadon ceramics
  • Tailor-made clothing

Festival and events

Loy krathong (festival of lights).

During the 12th lunar month, people across the country gather around lakes, rivers, and canals to symbolically let their worries float away in the most magical way – by releasing colorful lotus-shaped rafts holding candles, incense, and flowers onto the water.

Yee Peng (or Yi Peng)

At the same time that Loy Krathong is taking place, Chiang Mai also celebrates Yee Peng. Religious events, cultural activities, and street parades all mark this Buddhist tradition. But what makes this festival truly spectacular is the release of thousands of sky lanterns that illuminate the sky.

Songkran (Thai New Year)

What happens when New Year’s Day falls during the height of summer? It morphs into a giant water fight. Some towns celebrate just on the day (April 13), while others stretch it out for several days of concerts, ceremonies, and other wet festivities.

Chiang Mai Flower Festival

Flowers are used in ways you never thought imaginable at this colorful three-day event in February. Come for the parade of impressive floral floats, and stay for the tasty Thai street food, music, and performances.

  • Makha Bucha Day

Is tipping customary in Thailand?

Tipping isn’t customary in Thailand, but feel free to leave restaurants, drivers or service workers a small tip if the service has been particularly good. It’s always appreciated.

What is internet access like in Thailand?

The Internet can be accessed at hotels and internet cafes in large cities and tourist areas but is limited in rural and remote areas.

Can I use my cell phone while in Thailand?

Cell phone coverage is generally good in Thailand’s urban areas, but may not be available on some of the islands and in more remote areas. Ensure global roaming is activated with your service provider before leaving home.

What are the toilets like in Thailand?

Squat toilets are most common in Thailand, although western-style flushable toilets can be found in larger hotels and some tourist areas. It’s a good idea to carry your own toilet paper and hand sanitizer, as they are not always provided.

Can I drink the tap water in Thailand?

Drinking tap water isn’t recommended in Thailand. Avoid drinks with ice and make sure to peel fruit before eating it. Help the environment and try to avoid buying bottled water. Instead, fill a reusable water bottle with filtered water. Your leader or hotel can tell you where to find filtered water.

Are credit cards widely accepted in Thailand?

Credit cards are usually accepted by hotels, large retailers and tourist sites but are less commonly accepted by smaller vendors and family-run restaurants in rural areas. Market stalls and street vendors will not accept credit cards. Always carry enough cash for smaller purchases in case credit cards are not an option.

What is ATM access like in Thailand?

ATMs are widely available in larger cities but are less common in small villages or rural areas. Make sure you have enough cash before leaving urban areas.

Do I need any vaccinations before visiting Thailand?

No vaccines are required in order to enter Thailand but some are recommended for protection against disease. Visit your doctor or travel clinic for advice and make sure to schedule vaccinations 4-6 weeks before your departure date, as some require time to become effective.

Is Thailand a safe destination for LGBTQIA+ travelers?

As a whole, Thailand is a hassle-free destination for LGBTQIA+ travelers. Bangkok, Pattaya, and Phuket all have fairly prominent gay scenes. Be aware that Thais typically do not engage in public displays of affection, regardless of sexual orientation.

For more detailed and up-to-date advice, we recommend visiting Equaldex or ILGA before you travel.

What's the transport like in Thailand?

Intrepid believes half the fun of experiencing a new country is getting there, and getting around once there! Where possible, Intrepid uses local transport options and traditional modes of transport - which usually carry less of an environmental impact, support small local operators, and are more fun.

Depending on which trip you're on while in Thailand, you may find yourself traveling by Songthaew.

Get to know the locals as you share a ride in these converted pick-up trucks. Snagging a seat on the ‘two benches’ (the literal meaning of songthaew) is a popular way of getting around South East Asia.

See Thailand from the ground level on a Saamlaw, the three-wheeled wonder. Sometimes motorized but usually pedal-powered by a local, it’s a fun way to get from A to B or see a new city's sights.

What's the accommodation like in Thailand?

Traveling with Intrepid is a little bit different. We endeavor to provide travelers with an authentic experience to remember, so we try to keep accommodations as unique and traditional as possible.

When traveling with us in Thailand you may find yourself staying in a Homestay.

Experience friendly Thai hospitality while staying with a local family living a traditional way of life. Make new friends, pick up some local lingo and leave smiling.

The ultimate room with a view - spend the night on a floating bamboo raft house. Enjoy the seclusion, soak up the serenity and leave feeling refreshed and rejuvenated.

Does my trip to Thailand support The Intrepid Foundation?

Yes, all Intrepid trips support the Intrepid Foundation. In fact, we make a donation on behalf of every traveler. Trips to Thailand directly support our foundation partner, EcoThailand Foundation .

EcoThailand Foundation is on a mission to educate and empower local communities, on the tourist Islands of Koh Phangan and Koh Paluay, about environmental issues like climate change, waste management, nature appreciation, conservation and sustainable lifestyles. Donations from our trips help EcoThailand's environmental guardianship education program for children in local state schools.

Intrepid will double the impact by dollar-matching all post-trip donations made to The Intrepid Foundation.

Do I need to purchase travel insurance before traveling?

Absolutely. All passengers traveling with Intrepid are required to purchase travel insurance before the start of their trip. Your travel insurance details will be recorded by your leader on the first day of the trip. Due to the varying nature, availability and cost of health care around the world, travel insurance is very much an essential and necessary part of every journey.

Apply for a thai visa, japan – a visa exempt country.

Japanese jet-setters can travel to Thailand without a visa as long as it is for the purpose of tourism. They may stay for a maximum of 30 days through the Visa Exemption Program . A Japanese citizen can extend their permit to stay for a further 30 days at any local immigration office.

If you want to stay in Thailand longer than the Visa Exemption allows, or are traveling for a purpose other than tourism, Siam Legal International law firm offers various Thailand Visa services  for travelers from Japan. You may check our services through our website at: https://www.siam-legal.com/legal_services/thailand-visa-services.php

Long Term Visas for the Japanese

Tourist visa and special tourist visa (stv).

Japanese citizens may apply for a Tourist Visa from the Thai embassy or consulate. There is the normal 60-day tourist visa that can be extended for additional 30 days, and the 90-day Special Tourist Visa (STV), which allows two 90-day visa extensions at the local immigration office. There are certain requirements needed for the STV, but it allows a visitor to stay in Thailand for a potential 9 months. The STV will be available until September 2022.

Thai Elite Visa

If you wish to make Thailand easily accessible for many years to come or are perhaps thinking of relocating permanently, it is worth having a look at the Thailand Elite Visa .

The Thai Elite Visa allows Japanese citizens to live in Thailand for 5, 10, or even 20 years. Thai Elite members do not need to worry about some of the eligibility criteria needed when applying for other long-term visas.

The Thai Elite visa is exclusive and offers a host of benefits to holders. If you want to enjoy “Thai life” for the long term, you can read more about the Thailand Elite Visa .

Non-Immigrant Visa

Foreigners may also apply for a wide range of non-immigrant visas:

  • Non-immigrant B Visa – for conducting business or employment
  • Non-immigrant O visa – for visiting Thai spouse and family
  • Non-immigrant ED visa – for students of recognized institutions in Thailand and their Parents or Legal guardian
  • Non-immigrant O retirement visa – for those who wish to retire in Thailand
  • Non-immigrant OA and OX visa – for those who wish to obtain a Thailand retirement visa for a long stay (it differs from type O visa)

The above visas can be organized with a local Thai Embassy or Consulate in Japan. The paperwork can be quite involved, but there are companies that can help.

Siam Legal International is a reputable company in Thailand that has offered visa assistance to Indians for years. They are well versed in Thai immigration policies and processes. If you would like to streamline your long-term stay in Thailand, it is worth contacting them.

To apply for a visa of more than 30 days, please download this visa application form , fill in the necessary details and make an appointment . Applications without reservations are not accepted.

You can submit the visa applications at the Royal Thai Embassy and Consulates located in Japan:

  • Royal Thai Embassy, Tokyo located at 3-14-6, Kami-Osaki, Shinagawa-ku, Tokyo 141-0021
  • Royal Thai Consulate-General, Osaka located at 〒541-0056 Osaka, Chuo Ward, Kyutaro Machi, 1 Chome−9−16 バンコック銀行ビル4階

Vaccination status and entering Thailand

From July 1, 2022, a Thailand Pass application is no longer required. Citizens from Japan will be able to enter the country one of two ways.

  • Vaccinated Travelers – Vaccinated Japanese travelers do not need to complete any Covid tests before leaving Japan. They will need to have a copy of their vaccination certificate with them. Children under 18 who are traveling with vaccinated parents do not need to complete any RT-PCR or Pro-ATK test before departing.
  • Unvaccinated Travelers – Before coming to Thailand, unvaccinated travelers will need to complete an RT-PCR or Professional Antigen (Pro-ATK) test through a clinic or medical professional. The test result must be issued within 72 hours before departing Japan.

An ATK (RAT) home test is not acceptable. Children under 18 who are traveling with unvaccinated parents also need to complete a test.

Airlines and Immigration will conduct random checks of passengers to confirm Covid requirements are met. It is best to have your Vaccination or Covid test Certificate available to show.

Book your Flight to Thailand

Fly from Japan to Thailand now! Airlines with available flights from Japan to Thailand are listed below:

  • JAL (Japan Airlines)
  • Thai Airways
  • All Nippon Airways (ANA)
  • Singapore Airlines
  • Hong Kong Express

You can land at any international airport in Thailand and transit to other areas right away. There are no longer any “sealed” flights, though domestic flights may ask to see a vaccination certificate or test result before boarding. If you are traveling domestically, ATK self-tests are available at airports, pharmacies, and convenience stores.

Most international airlines follow the rules of the arrival country. If you are transiting through another country, it is best to check with the airline if you need to complete any tests for that country.

Book a Hotel

Vaccinated travelers or unvaccinated travelers who complete a 72-hour pre-departure RT-PCR/Pro-ATK test are welcome to book any accommodation. There are no quarantine requirements. SHA+ quarantine packages have been removed from most booking sites.

If you see a “Quarantine Package” listed, you do not need to choose it.

To find and compare the best hotels available in Thailand, visit Agoda . They allow free booking and cancellation, confirm bookings with hotels and their web page is easy to navigate and compare hotels.

You need to enter an address when traveling to Thailand. The accommodation can be a hotel, home, or a friend’s address.

Organize your Travel Insurance

If you are a foreigner, you should purchase a Travel Insurance policy. Though it is no longer an entry requirement, responsible travelers know the benefits of having insurance while traveling abroad.

Travel Insurance is one of those things that is better to have and not need than need and not have. Travel insurance doesn’t just cover Covid. Comprehensive travel insurance will also cover:

  • Medical emergencies
  • Personal injury & accidents
  • Missed or delayed flights
  • Damage to belongings
  • Loss of luggage

The most important thing to know about insurance is that foreign travelers are not eligible for any form of free medical care in Thailand. No matter the circumstance, if a Japanese citizen needs medical attention, they will need to pay for it. Depending on the severity, this could amount to thousands of dollars in out-of-pocket expenses.

There are multiple reasons to protect yourself when traveling. Many visitors to Thailand choose AXA Insurance Thailand. It is a trusted company that offers comprehensive insurance to travelers from around the world. Their policies are straightforward with good coverage.

Some advantages to AXA Insurance are:

  • Recognized and trusted by Thai authorities and medical facilities.
  • Easy to apply online and approved in minutes.
  • Competitive pricing and cover.
  • Has no 14-day waiting period and covers Covid-related incidents, including asymptomatic cases.
  • Provides customers with a convenient 1-Page Certificate of insurance. This certificate contains all relevant information needed by medical professionals or if making a claim.

To see the cover offered and organize your insurance to Thailand in minutes. Visit AXA Thailand .

Arriving in Thailand – Best Practices

So what can you expect when landing in Thailand? Here are a few things that will help you enjoy your trip and show respect to local Thai people.

Wearing Masks

From July 1st, masks are no longer compulsory but still recommended when in public places. You see that many Thai people (and visitors) still wear masks when out and about. It is recommended to wear a mask when visiting restaurants or public venues. You will not get in trouble if you don’t wear a mask, but it is a case of “do as the locals do”. It is about respect and consideration.

TM6 Arrival Cards

The Thai government has temporarily removed the need for visitors to complete the blue arrival card known as TM6. Their aim is to ease congestion at airports and remove another form that holiday makers need to complete. This initiative is in a testing phase, but it is hoped that the removal of TM6 will be successful and the change will become permanent.

Paperwork to Prepare

Though Thailand Pass is removed, and travelers do not need to provide proof before entry, it is best to prepare a few documents before arriving.

  • Certificate of Insurance
  • Vaccination certificate (vaccinated travelers)
  • 72-hour RT-PCR or Pro-ATK test result (unvaccinated)
  • Covid-19 recovery certificate (if previously tested positive)

This will speed up your processing time before leaving your country, or if asked to provide vaccination or testing proof in a random check. These documents can be presented in digital form, but airlines, Immigration, and Health Officers will appreciate the extra effort if you print them.

Following the above advice will ensure you have a smooth trip to Thailand and can enjoy a few weeks of well-deserved vacation in the tropics.

Japan, Singapore & Thailand Beach Escape

thailand tour from japan

Itinerary Details

FIRST-CLASS | PRIVATE-GUIDED: Go on a journey through some of the most exciting destinations in Asia. Visit Tokyo, the bustling capital of Japan, Hakone, a scenic mountain resort town, Kyoto, known for its rich history and culture, Singapore, a modern metropolis and Phuket, a tropical paradise. Experience a unique blend of urban excitement, natural beauty, cultural richness and relaxation.

Japan Singapore Thai Beach Escape

This epic 18-day trip to Asia combines three unique destinations into one unforgettable package. Immerse yourself in the rich history and bold visions of Japan before diving into Asia’s great cultural crossroads in Singapore. Finally, relax and unwind amid beautiful surrounds, a timeless culture, and mouth-watering cuisine on the islands of Thailand.

The adventure begins in Tokyo, where the energy of today’s Japan captures your imagination. Start in Asakusa, at the city’s oldest temple, Senso-ji. Then hop the water bus down the Sumidagawa to Hamarikyu Garden. Enjoy your tea in this Edo-era garden before visiting Meiji Shrine, the centre of Shinto Tokyo and a picturesque spot for weddings. The following day, explore Sumo culture in all its beauty and complexity. Learn how these mighty wrestlers live, train, and eat before enjoying an afternoon at leisure to explore Tokyo. In the evening, your guide will take you through the nightlife of Shinjuku, an area packed with tiny local bars and restaurants that embodies night-time Tokyo.

Take your journey to Hakone National Park, in the shadow of Mount Fuji. Hopefully the skies grant you a great view of the famous peak, but even if they don’t, a ride on Lake Ashi is an experience never to be forgotten. Stay in a traditional ryokan overnight before going on to Kyoto, the capital of old Imperial Japan. Marvel at the seemingly endless red torii gates of Fushimi Inari Shrine, see the vast hall of Sanjusangendo and take in the view from Kiyomizu-dera’s awesome verandah.

Kinkaku-ji’s golden pavilion captures the imagination of everyone who visits, and you’ll be no exception on a morning tour that also takes in Kintano-tenmangu shrine, built to appease an angry ghost. Afterwards, explore the Kamishichiken Geisha district, a less touristy alternative to the popular Gion district in Kyoto’s east. In the evening, take the short journey to Osaka, the party-loving capital of Kansai for an evening of delicious food and entertainment in the Dotonbori district. A full day in Kyoto is yours to enjoy at leisure. Perhaps devote it to Arashiyama, famous for its bamboo grove and monkey park, or tranquil Ginkaku-ji temple and Philosopher’s Walk.

If Japan has always embodied cutting-edge Asia, Singapore these days gives it serious competition with a serious devotion to sustainability, all while enjoying a unique mix of cultures and fantastic food options. Spend your arrival day relaxing or exploring at leisure, before a city tour invites you into Singapore’s most interesting neighbourhoods including Kampong Glam, the Malay quarter, Marina Bay, with its amazing view of the Merlion, the ArtScience Museum, Marina Bay Sands resort, and Gardens by the Bay, Chinatown’s Thian Hock Keng Temple, and Singapore’s eye-popping Botanical Gardens. You’ll have plenty of time at leisure to visit other neighbourhoods like Little India, where you might have a custom sari made, the museum district, home to the new Singapore Art Museum, showcasing contemporary art, or Singapore’s trio of cutting edge zoos, the Singapore Zoo, Night Safari, and River Safari, which preserve the animals’ natural environments as closely as possible. Consider booking breakfast with the orangutans. It’s an unforgettable meal!

Fly on to Phuket and the white sand beaches of Thailand’s south. Take your first day to settle in, then tour a local rum distillery and enjoy a Thai spin on the classic mojito before admiring Southeast Asia’s largest Buddha statue. Take in the sunset from Phromthep Cape, then rest up for your day as James Bond. Well, following in his boat trail at least! Your long tail boat tour takes you through the dramatic limestone castes that define this beautiful part of Thailand. Visit mangrove forests, swim alongside colourful fish, and step ashore on the island used in the Bond film The Man with the Golden Gun .

Embark on a culinary journey through Thailand at Blue Elephant Cooking School, and try your hand at preparing some signature Thai dishes. In the evening, enjoy a heritage tour through Phuket’s rich Chinese and Portuguese-influenced past. There’s always more to Thailand than meets the eye! If after all that you just want to relax, you’ll have three full days at leisure to do it, or to arrange more unforgettable experiences before you depart.

Private Full Day Tokyo Highlights Tour with Sumida River Cruise

Take a day tour of fascinating Tokyo. First up is Asakusa, Tokyo's old town where you can soak in the atmosphere of old Tokyo. Visit Sensoji, Tokyo's oldest temple, and wander down Nakamise, a shopping street that has been providing temple visitors with a variety of traditional, local snacks and tourist souvenirs for centuries. Next, travel down the Sumidagawa River on Tokyo's Water Bus, a unique means of transportation. You'll arrive directly at Hamarikyu garden, an Edo Period Japanese garden surrounded by the Shiodome district's futuristic skyscrapers, a great example of how Japan is the land of contrasts. Enjoy a cup of steaming matcha in a tea house in the garden. After lunch, enjoy a visit to Meiji Shrine, a shrine dedicated to the deified spirit of Emperor Meiji and a popular place for traditional Japanese weddings. Finally, as the sunlight dims, take a walk down the sparkly Omotesando shopping street, a broad tree-lined avenue, home to the flagship stores of the world's top fashion brands and some fantastic modern architecture.

Tokyo Sumo Stable Visit & Evening Shinjuku Tour

This morning, a guide will meet you at your hotel and take you to a "sumo beya" or sumo stable. Here, you will have a peek behind the scenes at the world of sumo beya. All rikishi (wrestlers) belong to heyas, or sumo stables, where they live, train and eat. You will be able to visit one of these heyas to get up close and personal with these giant men and watch their asa geiko (morning training). The day begins in the early morning when the lowest-ranked men wake up and put in some practice before going about their assigned duties, which include cleaning the building and preparing the food for the main meal of the day. Higher ranked sekitori appear at a more reasonable hour, and they begin a practice session that runs from about 7 am until about 10 am. After several hours of warm-up and technique practice, the wrestlers play an exciting "King of the Castle" game where one wrestler stays in the ring fighting bouts without any rest until he is defeated. As the end time for training is in flux, the tour disbands at the stable. Your afternoon is free to explore Tokyo at your own pace. In the evening visit Shinjuku with your private guide. Some say that Tokyo truly comes alive at night, and nowhere is this truer than Shinjuku. Almost a city within a city, Shinjuku is full of tens of thousands of bars, restaurants and clubs. It is the "bright lights big city" neon wonderland Tokyo that you see in the movies. Tonight, your local guide will take you on a walk through Shinjuku' s entertainment district of Kabuki-cho. Stop for a drink in a local bar, many of which are only large enough to fit 4 or 5 people, and have a chance to interact with the local Tokyoites, relaxing after a hard day in the office. Finish the evening how the Japanese do, with an hour in a private karaoke booth.

Tokyo to Hakone National Park

Meet your guide in the morning and transfer together to the bullet train station to take the train to Odawara (in Hakone). Your guide will help you board the train in Tokyo and then say goodbye. On arrival in Hakone, meet your guide for the day and begin your sightseeing tour of Hakone National Park. First take a boat ride across Lake Ashi where you might catch a glimpse of Mt. Fuji. Then make your way up the Komagatake Ropeway, to the summit of Mt Komagatake, from which you can see amazing panoramic views of Lake Ashi, Hakone and Mt. Fuji, weather permitting. Also visit Hakone Motomiya Shrine, located on Mt. Komagatake with 2400 years of history. Heading down the ropeway, you will pick up a cruise again across to Sekisho-Ato, once part of Hakone's old town. After lunch (not included) stop by a local craft shop selling puzzle boxes on your way to one of the few original stretches of the Tokaido Road that ran from Tokyo to Kyoto. Walk along the 500 meter stretch of the Tokaido Road that preserves the original tall cedar trees and some of the old paving stones. The walk is very flat and takes just about 20 - 30 minutes to complete. At the end of the tour your guide will escort you to your ryokan. Enjoy the hot spring baths and an authentic kaiseki cuisine dinner prepared with seasonal ingredients.

Hakone to Kyoto’s Shrines & Temples

This morning make your own way from Hakone to Kyoto (bullet train tickets provided). Meet your guide on arrival at Kyoto Station and begin your afternoon private guided tour. Visit a celebrated site, the world-famous Fushimi Inari Shrine. Thousands of bright red torii gates line the mountain trail of Fushimi Inari Shrine. Walking through the truly unique vermillion gate pathway is a visually stunning experience. The shrine complex spans over the entire Mt. Inari (233m/765ft). On your tour, you will visit the main shrine hall. Then, you will proceed through the famed vermillion gate tunnel. Next, visit a temple that once caught fire and was reconstructed a century after it was first constructed. At 120 meters, Sanjusangendo is the longest wooden structure in Japan. Inside, you will find 1001 statues of Kannon, the Buddhist saint of Mercy. Then stop at a celebrated UNESCO site, Kiyomizu-dera Temple, which is older than Kyoto as the capital of Japan. Built for Kannon, the Buddhist saint of mercy, this temple is said to grant wishes of all kinds. After the tour your guide will escort you to your hotel.

Kyoto Gold Highlights Tour & Osaka Evening Food Tour

In the morning visit Northern Kyoto and Kinkakuji Temple, a favorite to millions of visitors each year, you will quickly see why this jewel set into the northern hills is one of the most visited sites in Japan. It is covered in real gold leaf and vibrant at any time of year no matter the weather. Continue to Kintano-tenmangu, a remarkable shrine to scholarship that was built to appease the spirit of an angry ghost. The shrine's surrounding entertainment district was first built after a fire in 1444, when a large section of the temple had to be rebuilt, and the remaining timber was used to construct 7 tea houses that became the first 'flower town' or Geisha district in Kyoto. Explore the Kamishichiken district, every bit as charming as its more touristy cousin the Gion district, with the added bonuses of fewer crowds and excellent photo opportunities. In the afternoon, have a few hours of leisure time in Kyoto before your evening excursion to Osaka, one of Japan's most vibrant cities. Your guide will pick you up from your hotel in Kyoto and take you to Osaka by local train (30 min). Learn about the splendors of Osaka's casual cuisine, venturing into the epicenter of street food culture in Osaka: Dotonbori. Dotonbori is a famous pedestrian-only restaurant street in Osaka's boisterous Namba district. Famous for its vast array of culinary options, Dotonbori is known as a food paradise throughout Japan. This is where Kansai people come to celebrate! Colorful eateries and bars line the neon-filled streets: hole-in-the-wall takoyaki stands and street side ramen bars rub shoulders with upscale eateries serving the finest wagyu beef - and everywhere, people - young and old -- out to enjoy the culinary pleasures of the nation's most famous restaurant district. You'll have the chance to sample a variety of local foods, including the famous and ubiquitous takoyaki (commonly known as 'octopus dumplings') and kushikatsu (skewered meats and vegetables). The cost of these - and one drink a piece - is included. Your guide can also take you to a huge variety of other establishments, from ramen noodles to izakaya bars. The cost for your orders here will be on you. Afterwards your guide will take you back to Osaka station where you will make your way back to Kyoto, or direct you to elsewhere nearby if you prefer to keep eating and drinking!

This district has a history that dates back to Singapore's colonial era as the allocated area to the Malay, Arab and Bugis communities. Full Day Chalong Bay Rum & Buddha Tour

Kicking off in the late morning at 11:00, transfer from the hotel to the Chalong Bay Rum Distillery around noon, just in time for a delicious lunch at the distillery. After lunch, be welcomed with a refreshing Chalong Bay Mojito, followed by visiting the one-and-only distillery of Phuket. Observe the inner working process. Learn how award-winning rum is produced from sustainably-grown Thai sugarcane and observe the French copper still and on-site bottling facility in action. After the 30-minute guided distillery tour, come back to the bar to taste 6 different flavors of rum. Have a chance for shopping before departing the distillery. Chalong Bay rums will be packed nicely as a perfect souvenir to bring back home! After the distillery tour, drive up the hill to where the white Big Buddha of Phuket is viewed attractively from the foothill. The Big Buddha whose official name is Wat Phra Phuttha Mingmongkol Eaknakakeeree is a hilltop temple, home to Southeast Asia's largest Buddha Statue. Once up there, enjoy the stunning bird's eye view of Phuket island down below. Then take a scenic route for a great view of Phuket's beaches at a few stops of the viewpoint. Cap off the evening at the famous Phromthep Cape for the best sunset of the day before returning back to the hotel.

Full Day Phang Nga Bay & James Bond Island by Private Longtail Boat

Today, spend a day at sea visiting beautiful Phang Nga Bay from Phuket. After breakfast, you'll be met and driven to the jetty where a private, longtail boat awaits. Climb aboard and cast off to begin your adventure! Cross the emerald-green waters of the bay, passing by dramatic limestone karsts and uninhabited islands. Go ashore at 'James Bond Island', a distinctive rocky island that is a popular place for photos. The day is filled with several fantastic stops. Cruise through a pristine mangrove forest, getting a close look at the incredible ecosystems created by these ancient plants. Stop at secluded beaches to go swimming alongside colourful tropical fish. There is plenty of time to explore secluded beaches and soak up the sun. Around midday a scrumptious picnic lunch will be served in a scenic location. Enjoy the fresh air and tropical breeze while dining on a delicious meal. As the sun begins to dip low into the sky, return to Phuket arriving in time to watch the sunset at the end of the day. You'll be transferred back to your hotel.

Morning Cooking Class at Blue Elephant & Evening Heritage Tour

Start your Thai culinary journey with a visit to Phuket's morning market where you'll learn to select and buy the perfect Thai ingredients for your personal cooking lesson at Blue Elephant Cooking School. After a morning market, you will head over to the school for an insightful culinary class. The instructor will explain the culinary techniques and demonstrate how to prepare each dish. Then you will begin to learn how to cook a variety of popular dishes with a qualified Thai chef. The class is followed by a meal in Blue Elephant's delightful restaurant sampling your own cooking as well as additional Thai dishes. Your afternoon is at leisure. In the evening take a closer look at Phuket's rich cultural heritage. Start with a visit to the island's historic quarters, where a delightful mix of old and new buildings can be found. See Phuket's oldest Chinese shrine, learning about the Chinese migrants who came to the island in the 19th century to work in the tin mines. Continue past Sino-Portuguese buildings, which attest to the island's past as a key stop on the Asian trading routes. There is also a chance to visit a colorful fruit market where locally-grown tropical fruits are sold. Following this insightful walking tour, return to the vehicle and drive to the summit of Rang Hill. Enjoy sweeping views of the town, seeing the heritage buildings from a different point of view. A refreshing cocktail and light snack will be served at this scenic location. The tour comes to a close with dinner at a great local restaurant. Afterwards, you'll be transferred back to your hotel.

Our Orient Extravagance tour features 20 unforgettable days of pure excitement to the Pacific Rim’s hottest destinations, all in the luxury comfort of Asia’s top accommodations and legendary hospitality. But the similarities stop here. Each metropolis embodies its own distinctive flavor of timeless traditions, magnificent architecture, majestic scenery and warm friendly people; each with its own version of uncommon thrills, bustling nightlife, awesome entertainment and tantalizing cuisines that promises memories of a lifetime.

Your voyage begins with the electrifying city of Tokyo, arguably the most modern city on our planet. But its contrasts between the old and the new, the traditional and modern makes Tokyo an exciting place for travelers to visit the world over. Get close and personal with the city’s eclectic modern-day culture that sets the trends for the world to follow. Stroll about the ancient capital’s heritage sites and beautiful gardens, and experience true hospitality unlike anywhere on Earth.

Next, visit two of China’s greatest ancient capitals — Beijing & Xian, where we experience first-hand several legendary landmarks and national treasures so symbolic of China including the awe-inspiring Forbidden City, the magnificent Great Wall, and the two thousand year-old Terracotta Warriors. After a heavy dose of remarkable sights, we touchdown in two of China’s thriving metropolises: Shanghai and Hong Kong – where millions come to savor culinary delicacies, hunt for extraordinary shopping bargains, and simply indulge in the plethora of nighlife and entertainment options each city has to offer .

Then, whisk over to Bangkok, one of Southeast Asia’s most fun and exotic destinations. Its friendly people and endearing Thai culture will make any visitor fall in love with this magical kingdom. Highlights include visits to the magnificent Royal Grand Palace, Wat Trimit’s revered Golden Buddha, Wat Pho’s striking Reclining Buddha, and plenty of free time to relax, explore and indulge all that Bangkok has to offer. Your journey of the Far East concludes in the island country of Singapore, a dynamic city rich in contrast, color and vibrance. Singapore is modern yet charming, sophisticated yet laidback, East but also West that offers something for everyone and caters to every whim. Watch an exciting F1 Race, bargain hunt in Chinatown’s bustling night market, or try your luck at one of Marina Bay’s world-class casinos. Singapore wows the visitor in every way.

Olivia Rodrigo is continuing to expand her Guts World Tour , announcing Wednesday (May 8) that she’s adding nine new dates in Asia and Australia to the trek for this fall.

Trending on billboard.

The “Vampire” singer is currently in the midst of her trek’s European leg, which began April 30 in Dublin. It follows her initial run of shows in North America, which featured stops in Palm Springs, Calif., New York City, Toronto and more cities.

“europe leg of the GUTS world tour has been wonderful so far!!!!” she wrote on Instagram following the new announcement, sharing photos from her past performances. “so much luv for everyone who has been coming 2 jump and sing and scream!!! Asia and Australia dates just announced!!! hope to see ya there!!!”

The news comes just a few days after Rodrigo was forced to postponed her show in Manchester planned for Friday (May 3) due to technical difficulties at the Co-Op Live arena. “I’m sooooo disappointed that we’re unable to perform in Manchester due to on-going venue-related technical issues,” she wrote on her Story at the time. “I’m so bummed and I really hope to see you all soon.”

7 Places Where the Dollar Goes Farthest for Travelers

A strong dollar can stretch your travel imagination. we asked travel professionals where you should use that extra buying power..

Japan has been seen as an expensive tourist destination in the past, but a weak yen means American travelers are finding uncharacteristically great deals in places like Kyoto.

If Afar’s Where to Go in 2024 list is inspiring your trip planning this year, we have good news: The U.S. dollar is strong in a lot of popular destinations and your money is going to go further. For example, seeing the Colosseum in Rome and the Sydney Opera House is cheaper for Americans at the moment, because purchases made in local currency are weighted in our favor.

While seasonality and supply and demand affect a destination’s value (Paris is likely to be more expensive during the Olympics, whereas shoulder season can deliver some deals), a strong dollar means you’ll get more for less. So we talked to industry experts to find out where travelers can get the best value out of that formula.

Machu Picchu is popular for a reason; it’s one of the tourist attractions Afar editors actually love visiting .

“Now is a great time to consider visiting Peru ,” says Melissa Da Silva, president of Trafalgar Tours North America. “Not only can travelers expect to spend around $10 for a terrific meal, but its temperate climate and incredible marvels . . . make it a bucket-list destination travelers cannot afford to miss.” We’d add that while Machu Picchu is a don’t-miss historical site , there’s so much more to see in Peru than the ancient Inca ruins . Plus, Intrepid Travel is offering new itineraries on the less-traveled Inca Quarry Trail in the Sacred Valley.

Michael Holtz, founder and CEO of SmartFlyer, agrees: “South American countries like Argentina , Peru, and Colombia are known for their diverse landscapes, cultural richness, and outstanding hospitality at a more accessible price point, both for travel and once on the ground.”

“Anytime there is strength in the U.S. dollar, it makes for an ideal time to go to Europe,” says Ann Chamberlain, a travel advisor for Chase’s business and luxury travel arm Frosch. But she recommends that travelers look beyond that too. “Another favorite, more affordable destination I love to recommend to my clients is Thailand . With rates for luxury, five-star resorts starting [in the $200s], it’s easy to find nice places to stay without breaking the bank. It’s also a great destination for incredible food , and with some of the world’s best beaches , travelers can spend their days enjoying nature and forgoing activities that require a lot of money.” And remember: The third season of HBO’s The White Lotus is filming in Thailand, so right now could be the ideal time to check out those luxury resorts before they inevitably become even more popular when the show airs next year.

If you’ve always dreamed of visiting Japan, the weak yen makes this year an ideal time to go: Your dollar stretches about 35 percent further than it did in 2019. Whether you want to explore Tokyo ‘s fish markets and record bars; marvel at the temples of Kyoto ; or hike through majestic forests on the Kumano Kodo trail, plenty of deals area available.

Mexico should excite travelers who love history, art, food, or the beach. Mexico City is a vibrant capital with hotel options in a wide range of prices across many neighborhoods, such as Reforma, Roma , and Condesa—each populated with excellent street food and fine dining. Hannah Choat, Intrepid Travels’ PR specialist for North America, suggests touring the Yucatan peninsula for beaches and Mayan historic sites or joining a food excursion to Oaxaca.

“For Americans with the time to travel a little further,” says Holtz, “ Australia is a welcome escape where they can get the most for their dollar.” As of May 2024, US$1 gets you AUS$1.50, so Americans’ cash will buy them more time to sample the coffee in Melbourne or order beers and check out the best hotels in Sydney , one of our picks for Where to Go in 2024. Rome's Trevi Fountain, without people

An all-time favorite, Rome is a good value now.

“The U.S. dollar is particularly strong at the moment, offering close to 1:1 exchange to the euro,” says Holtz. “This favorable exchange rate combined with the numerous new hotel openings, particularly in Italy and France , encourages more European travel on the horizon for 2024.” He notes that Portugal is also attractive because “travelers can enjoy all the creature comforts of a Mediterranean summer but for more extended periods of time.”

Steve Born, chief marketing officer for the Globus travel brands (Globus, Cosmos, and Avalon Waterways) sees great opportunity in Europe too, and notes that the euro goes further in eastern and southern Europe than in the western region. He recommends Croatia and Greece for better value at restaurants and hotels. “Overlooking the blue waters of the Adriatic, cities like Dubrovnik not only host extraordinary UNESCO World Heritage sites, charming, historic streets, and medieval attractions, [but] the pricing at Croatian accommodations is also much less than other parts of Europe,” he says.
