What are the Bus Classes & Prices of Mayan Tours and Travels?

The price of your bus trip will depend both on the destination and the class of your ticket. Note that not all ticket classes are available on certain routes yet for longer trips there is almost always a good choice of options. Opt for a sleeper coach for the most convenient overnight trip. Sleeper buses are usually equipped with berths or soft reclining seats, feature an onboard toilet and your ticket may also include other perks like snacks or even a lunch. Taking a night bus is also a good idea if you want to save on your hotel room. During the day an express service is often the best value for money as it makes less stops than an ordinary or standard class bus and travels faster. On some routes it may be crucial to choose the right class as, say, an ordinary or second class bus may need some 6 hours to cover the distance the first class or express bus travels in two hours!

Pros & Cons of Bus Travel

Pros of bus travel.

Buses usually boast the widest network of destinations covered. They travel to the places you cannot get to by plane or even by train

Travelling by bus is easy – there is no need to arrive to the bus terminal much in advance, and the check-in is usually a very fast formality opposite to air travel

Bus tickets are very affordable. Yes, there are costly first class or VIP options but is you are on a budget, bus is the first means of transportation you have to think about

At the same time, there are different classes of service to suit any budget. If you are after a higher level of comfort, buses get you covered, too.

Cons of Bus Travel

Intercity bus terminals can be located outside the city centre in the outskirts. It means you will need to calculate extra time and money to get there. In certain destinations getting from the bus terminal can cost you more than you would expect because only a limited number of transportation companies is allowed to serve the route – and prices may be inflated.

During busy weekends or high season buses serving some tourist destinations may run out of schedule and require advanced booking.

While buses are not as weather dependent as ferries, bus trips can also be delayed or cancelled due to bad weather or road conditions – keep it in mind if travelling during certain seasons or to certain destinations.

About Mayan Tours and Travels

Bus is a convenient way of travel no matter whether you need to get to a neighboring town a couple of hours away or venture further afield crossing the whole country. Whatever your budget, buses have you covered. Express buses offer the most affordable ticket price for travellers who have very little money to spend. VIP options are geared toward those who do not want to compromise on comfort. Before you jump on a bus, make sure you choose the type of service which suits you best. For a long-haul trip look for a VIP or first-class coach which provides non-stop service to your destination or just call a minor number of stations along the way. Express or local buses in many cases may prove an acceptable choice for shorter trips, but longer rides are often not the best buy. Study the timetable before going as many long-haul destinations are served by night buses, and some offer wider seats or sleeper berths for such travels. Make an online reservation for your bus ticket with Mayan Tours and Travels. Other travellers’ reviews will help you to choose the best ticket and coach class.

Mayan Tours and Travels Ticket Prices & Bus Classes

One of the best things about bus travel is that you can almost tailor-make your trip adjusting it to your requirements for privacy and comfort. Different classes and types of buses cater to the different needs of travellers. The cheapest trips are normally offered by standard-class buses. They may be called local, express or ordinary. These are a good choice for shorter trips. Sleepers or VIP coaches are good both for longer and overnight trips. They may offer berths or wide soft reclining seats, sometimes with built-in massage options, blankets, soft drinks, and snacks, or more substantial meals on board or during toilet or refuelling stops. Travelling by night buses allows you to save on a hotel room, but to ensure the most comfortable ride do choose the class of your bus wisely. Prices always depend on the distance you ride and the type of coach. For some, even shorter trips, it is worth investing some extra money and buying a seat on a VIP bus as it can save you twice as much time as you spend travelling by an ordinary bus.

Travel by Bus: Pros & Cons

Pros of bus travel.

  • Bus is the best choice to get to destinations that are not connected by rail or planes. The network of buses often covers almost the whole country, and their routes are well and long-established.
  • Opposite to air travel and sometimes rail travel, taking a bus does not require arriving at the bus station much in advance. Check-in, even on international routes, does not take much time. Luggage allowances are usually very traveller-friendly, and the fee for extra luggage, if limits are set, is normally not very high.
  • Bus tickets can be more affordable compared to air or fast train tickets. There is always a choice of ticket classes for all pockets. Cheaper standard options may be a bit slow and do not offer top comfort, but anyway acceptable and bring you to your destination. On longer routes, toilets or toilet stops as well as snacks, water, and sometimes toiletries and blankets are almost always included in the price.
  • If you are ready to spend more, some VIP coaches offer seating comparable to business class on a plane with wide soft reclining seats, blankets, fewer passengers, and many other perks to make your trip a pleasant journey.

Cons of Bus Travel

  • Newer intercity bus terminals are very often located out of the city close to bigger highways to allow buses to avoid city congestion. Unfortunately, it may create extra challenges for travellers, too. Getting to such a terminal may be a problem as in some destinations there are restrictions on vehicles allowed to enter the terminal, and you will have to use special carriers to get there. This results in higher costs as prices may be inflated. Also do calculate extra time if you are travelling during rush hours, especially if you are not familiar with the traffic situation at your starting point.
  • Buses are probably the means of transport which runs out of schedule more often than trains or planes. They are heavily dependent on the road situation which sometimes can be unpredictable – accidents, road construction works, detours, etc. This is especially true for travels during weekends, high season, or national holidays. Do keep this in mind and do not plan tight connections.
  • Travelling on certain routes or during the most popular periods may require advanced booking. Bear in mind that it is not always possible to show up at the bus station and hop on the next bus – tickets may well be all sold out, so organize your trip accordingly.

Chennai to Kochi - 9 days Tour

Chennai to Kochi - 9 days

Our guide made the tour special by stopping to show us interesting things along the way as we were a very small group. If we had been a bigger group this flexibility would not have been possible and I think then the tour would have been too many temples. However, the tour as we had it was excellent as we saw a lot of the rural areas and small villages. Note that this tour does not include a tour of Chennai or Kochi so try to stay an extra day before and after the tour to visit these places by yourself. Train ride was great, nothing to fear; hotels all comfortable but out of the city center; guide and driver excellent and the people of India are the friendliest in the world.

Essence of Idyllic South India Tour

Essence of Idyllic South India

We came to India for the second time to explore the southern part of this fascinating country. Our feeling about the south is totally different to the north but both parts are equally exciting and interesting. We were astonished by the colours and architecture of the temples, beautiful nature, scrumptious cuisine and lovely people. The tour operator did his best to make this journey a really nice experience by providing us with a brilliant driver Sunil and adding some attractions that made the itinerary more attractive. Sunil was always polite, friendly and helpful. We felt safe with him and really comfortable wherever we went. Houseboat in Alleppey which was a very important attraction of the tour was really charming. We asked our personal chef to make prawns for dinner and they tasted really good. Kumarakum area was fantastic since we saw so many bird species. All the temples of the south are out of this world and have energy when you enter them, this is an extraordinary experience especially during puja. In conclusion, we're very happy with our choice and we'll recommend this reliable tour operator to everyone who wants visit India.

WONDERFUL SOUTH INDIA TOUR With Kerala Tour

WONDERFUL SOUTH INDIA TOUR With Kerala

I had the pleasure of taking a wonderful South India tour with Kerala recently and it was an amazing experience. The tour was well organised and the places we visited were some of the most beautiful and interesting places in the country. We started off by visiting the capital city of Thiruvananthapuram, which is known for its beautiful architecture and temples. We then went to Alleppey where we experienced the backwaters of Kerala and had a chance to witness the beauty of the lush green countryside. We then went to Thekkady where we enjoyed the wildlife and the amazing view of the Periyar Lake. Our tour also included visits to Kochi and the beautiful hill station of Munnar. The highlight of the tour was the stay at the houseboat in Alleppey, where we had a chance to relax and experience the serenity of the backwaters. Overall, this tour was a great experience and I would highly recommend it to anyone looking for a chance to explore the beauty of South India. The tour was well organised and the staff was friendly and knowledgeable. I had a wonderful time and would definitely recommend it to anyone looking for an unforgettable South India tour.

Classical South India - Tamilnadu And Kerala ! Tour

Classical South India - Tamilnadu And Kerala !

Both Sathish (2 days) and Megesh (8 days) were excellent drivers and made us feel very welcomed. They arrived exactly when arranged and the car was always clean and well stocked with water. All the guides were extremely knowledgeable and we learned so much. The hotels were wonderful with a special call out to the Ideal Resort, Chidambara Vilas which was my favorite, the Heritage Madurai, Poetreee Sarovar and the Meridien. The breakfasts, dinners and service were all fantastic. The Lemon Tree had a few issues: The bathroom was not clean and the plumbing did not work well in both the shower and toilet. The furniture was not clean and the check-in and check-out process was very slow. I understand that they had suffered a flood the year before so perhaps it was taking some time to get things working again. I would not recommend this hotel. The view of the lake was, however, very beautiful. Thank you Tourradar/MTA for making my first trip to India so special. I will be back soon for another adventure and i will certainly recommend you whenever i get the chance. Thanks again. Sue Tattersfield

9 Things To Do in Thanjavur

Visit the unesco heritage site brihadeeshwara temple.

Part of the esteemed UNESCO World Heritage site , the Great Living Chola temples , the Brihadeshwara Temple stands as a magnificent Hindu shrine devoted to Lord Shiva. Commissioned by the illustrious Chola emperor Rajaraja I between 1003 and 1010 CE, this temple complex encompasses numerous shrines and deities, including a structure crafted in the Hoysala architectural style.

The temple harbours an aura of mystique, with several intriguing tales woven into its history. Among the most captivating legends is the temple’s purported lack of shadow, even at the peak of noon. Another enigma surrounds the construction material, as the entire edifice is fashioned from granite sourced from a location approximately 50 kilometres away from Thanjavur, where it was not naturally found.

Opening its doors from 6 AM to 8:30 PM, the temple experience is most enjoyable in the morning hours, preferably before 11 AM, to avoid the sweltering heat that prevails later in the day.

Engaging a knowledgeable guide enhances the visit, offering insights into the temple’s rich narratives and historical significance. Guides typically charge around INR 600 per hour, providing invaluable context to the temple’s intricate tales.

Go Back in Time at Aranmanai or the Maratha Palace

The Aranmanai Maratha Palace , serving as the official residence of the Bhosle family, who reigned over the Thanjavur region from 1674 to 1855, holds a significant historical legacy. Originally named Sivagangai Fort, this palace was constructed by the Thanjavur Nayaks in 1535. Within its expansive complex are various structures, including museums showcasing artifacts, remnants of antiquity, the illustrious Dharbar Hall, and a striking bell tower.

Open every day from 9 AM to 6 PM, the palace observes a brief closure during the lunch hour. Admission to the palace requires a fee of INR 50 for Indian nationals and INR 100 for foreign visitors.

Please note that using mobile phones and cameras within the premises incurs an additional charge.

Watch a Bharatnatyam Performance

Thanjavur holds the esteemed title of being the birthplace of Bharatnatyam , the revered traditional and classical dance form. With roots dating back to the ancient Natyasastra by the sage Bharat Muni, Bharatnatyam finds its most authentic expression in the temples of Thanjavur. The dance style embodies a deep sense of tradition and devotion to the deities, making it a truly mesmerizing experience.

While exploring Thanjavur, seize the opportunity to witness a Bharatnatyam performance firsthand. Engage with local dance schools or classes to inquire about scheduled performances, allowing you to immerse yourself in this revered art form’s captivating rhythms and graceful movements.

Walk Around the City to See Old Monuments

Embarking on a stroll through a city is often the most enriching way to uncover its essence, as it provides an opportunity to observe the locals and absorb the ambience of the surroundings.

In Thanjavur, this timeless approach to exploration is advantageous, given the plethora of ancient buildings and landmarks that are silent witnesses to centuries of history. Each step through the city’s streets unveils a tapestry of tales, offering insight into Thanjavur’s enduring character and heritage.

Visit the Churches

Amidst a city renowned for its devotion to temples, stumbling upon local churches was a delightful surprise. Exploring these historic churches provided a fascinating glimpse into a distinct architectural style, offering a refreshing contrast to the grandeur of the temples. Witnessing the unique blend of religious and cultural influences woven into Thanjavur’s diverse architectural landscape was a truly enriching experience.

Watch the Dying Art of Veena Making

Crafted from exquisite jackfruit wood, Thanjavur has earned renown for its distinguished tradition of Veena making . Across generations, local families have honed their skills in crafting these revered instruments, ensuring the artistry is preserved and passed down to future artisans. While the number of master craftsmen has dwindled to as few as 15 families, witnessing their meticulous craftsmanship firsthand remains a cherished delight.

Indulge in Chettinadu Lunch

Hailing from Tamil Nadu, Chettinadu cuisine is renowned for using freshly ground spices known as masalas. Originally predominantly vegetarian, this culinary tradition now encompasses a wide array of both vegetarian and non-vegetarian dishes. In Thanjavur, numerous restaurants proudly serve authentic Chettinad cuisine, allowing visitors to savour the rich flavours and aromatic spices that define this traditional fare.

Unravelling Thanjavur’s secrets

Maratha history, tamil food, art and architecture— this exquisite southern city is the result of a historical fusion that few know about.

  • " data-post-id="89541">

Thanjavur

I’m a Maharashtrian in Thanjavur. Uninteresting trivia but for the fact that this small city in Tamil Nadu was once ruled by the Marathas, and a residual population still calls it home. So in my quest for the familiar, I learn about sunthi, a traditional Maratha dish of spiced meatballs delicately strung together with banana fibre. During weddings, after the ceremony, the groom is invited over by the bride’s family, offered some sunthi and challenged to unthread the fibre without allowing the meat to disintegrate. Blasphemous as it may sound in a temple town, the meat preparation seems like the perfect metaphor for Thanjavur—a place whose diverse past is held together by the common threads of religion and art.

Thanjavur (or Tanjore, as it was once known), on the banks of the Cauvery River, is a city with a dazzling history. Presided over by the great Brihadeeswarar temple, over 1,000 years old and a UNESCO World Heritage site, it is where much of Chola art and architecture reached its pinnacle. The birthplace of the famed Tanjore Quartet (the four brothers responsible for the development of Carnatic music and Bharatnatyam), the city is synonymous with Tanjore painting—a style that uses gold leaf, precious and semi-precious stones. Today, it is where some of the last makers of the veena survive. But few know that the Maratha king Shivaji’s legacy lives on in Thanjavur. For it was Shivaji’s stepbrother Ekoji I (also called Venkoji) who wrested power from the Nayak kings in the late 17th century, giving the city its unique culture that survives through the descendants of the Bhosale clan that the warrior king belonged to. Interestingly, it was under the patronage of the second last Maratha king, Serfoji II, that many of Thanjavur’s famous arts flourished. However, the only visible Maratha influence today is seen in the City Palace, where the royal family continues to be in residence. Although referred to locally as the Maratta Palace, the surreal royal complex was in fact built by the Nayak kings in the 17th century and extended by the Marathas, whose Durbar Hall is adorned with colourful frescoes.

Beautiful Chola bronze and stone sculptures in the palace’s art gallery vie for attention with the gigantic 92ft skeleton of a whale washed ashore in Tharangambadi in 1955 and now housed in the Arsenal Tower. The Saraswathi Mahal Library which exhibits over 50,000 palm leaf and paper manuscripts, displays, alongside Serfoji II’s eclectic European book collection, ophthalmological case sheets from 1860, human physiognomy charts and illustrations of Chinese torture methods. The peaceful playground adjoining the palace is believed to have once been the site of a zenana that burned down with its resident queens. Adjoining the palace on East Main Street is Kalyana Mahal, a dilapidated building where the many wives of the last Maratha king, Shivaji II, once lived. Today, the first floor is illuminatedby the shine of Tanjore paintings— mythological scenes of Ganesha and baby Krishna line the walls as the artistic tradition is carried on by the descendants of the Bhosale family. The dwindling Maratha population that once lived in and around the palace has, by now, integrated into the city’s culture, but retains its identity in the form of cuisine, customs and a dialect of Marathi entirely its own. The Maratha presence may also be felt in an unlikely place—Thanjavur’s Schwartz Church. Serfoji II was interested in theology, and this otherwise unremarkable church is adorned with a sculpture commissioned by the ruler, of himself at the deathbed of his mentor, the missionary Reverend Christian Schwartz.

And this Maratha presence is felt across religious sites. Thanjavur’s grandest structure, the Brihadeeswarar temple, is managed by the current scion of the clan, Babaji Bhosale. The temple’s attractions are many. Chennai-based historian Pradeep Chakravarthy, author of Thanjavur: A Cultural History, casts light on some. “The temple is known for its grand vision and minute details. The personality of Raja Raja Chola I [the ruler who built it] is writ large across the architecture. Be sure to run your hands over the inscriptions,” he tells me. “I’m going to give you a task,” he adds. “The tiny Durga temple close to the northern gate of the city is Tanjore’s oldest Chola structure. I want you to zoom in on the idol’s earrings and tell me what you see in their design.” I’m reduced to a schoolgirl with a puzzle. But more on that later.

How the massive Shiva temple complex—one of three Great Living Chola Temples (the other two are in Darasuram and Gangaikonda Cholapuram near Thanjavur) was built, is, in itself, a bit of a puzzle. Consecrated in 1010 AD, its soaring vimanam (the tower above the sanctum sanctorum) can be seen from afar. And both the cupola atop the vimanam and the enormous Nandi statue within the temple are monolithic. The granite used in the temple’s construction is believed to have been transported from Tiruchirappalli, 57km away, and lugged by elephants, which were made to climb atop planks to the higher levels of the structure. Today, the architecture combines various styles, with additions under the Pandyas, Vijayanagr Kings, Nayaks and Marathas, all of whom, by turns, ruled this glorious kingdom. It is beautiful on a moonlit night when sculptures of the Nataraja, once symbolic of Chola power, loom large over devotees gathered there for the evening prayers.

Known as thalaiatti bommai, these three-tiered figurines of dancers were originally made of coconut shell. Photo: shutterstock.com

I see more of these sculptures in Swamimalai, another temple town 35km from Thanjavur, where the fine tradition of Chola sculpture is kept alive. Here, Chola bronzes continue to be sculpted with the ancient lost-wax technique known as madhuchchishtavidhana in Sanskrit. In the workshop of Sambandamurthy, sthapathis (bronze-casters) make a mould with a mixture of clay, plaster and husk applied to a figure sculpted in beeswax. When heated, the wax melts out of the mould, leaving it hollow for molten metal to be poured in. When the metal has cooled sufficiently, the mould is destroyed and the sculpture is finely chiselled to perfection.

Further on, in Sickalnayakanpet, are the last of the Karuppur Kalamkari textile artists. National award-winning artist Emberumal’s family arrived in the Nayak court 600 years ago, from what is now Andhra Pradesh. “Their figurative art on textiles, also known as Chithira Paddam, is distinguished by black outlines of mythological scenes and intricate borders,” says artist VV Ramani. Known for his work on textiles, he’s my companion on this journey along with his writer wife, Hemalatha. Interestingly, the black dye is made with a mixture of iron rust and jaggery.

And in Thiruvaiyaru, the birthplace of musician saint Thyagaraja and the site of an annual Carnatic music festival in his honour, traditional knowledge is getting a boost from the Marabu Foundation. The NGO, led by Carnatic musician Rama Kausalya, is dedicated to the education of underprivileged children from nearby villages. Along with computer lessons, students also learn old Tamil nursery rhymes, music and board games like pallanguzhi, which is played with tamarind seeds or cowrie shells.

Back in Thanjavur, the shops are lined with Tanjore dancing dolls. Known as thalaiatti bommai, these three-tiered, painted terracotta figurines of dancers with their moving bodies were originally made of coconut shell. The colourful dolls are unique to the city and I pick one from the workshop residence of doll-maker Bhupathy. “In Tamil, someone who waggles their head [in agreement] a lot is called a thalaiatti bommai,” laughs Hemalatha, as we stop for some refreshments.

The city is a vegetarian’s paradise with its variety of poriyal (vegetable preparations), pachadi (curried/pickled salad), rasam, sambar, traditional rice dishes such as puliyotharai (tamarind rice) and thayir saadam (curd rice) and desserts such as payasam and peni (crispy vermicelli). Disappointingly, Maratha cuisine is scarce. I turn to Chakravarthy for help. “I only dine at the homes of Maratha friends,” he says before asking, “Have you seen Durga’s earrings yet?” I haven’t. First, I must seek a rare musical intervention.

A small passage off South Main Street leads to the workshop of veenamaker M Narayanan. Here, wood from the jackfruit tree is fashioned into the age-old musical instrument, then carved, polished and decorated before stringing, then sold to musicians in India and overseas. Serendipitously, a veena concert has been organised at Svatma, the charming hotel where I’m staying. One man’s craft is transformed into another’s sublime art as the strains of Raga Hamsadhwani, played by musician Ramadoss, fill the air. It seems only appropriate that I stay in a heritage property here, and the city offers two. Svatma stands as almost an emissary of Thanjavur, and one  that is entirely worthy of it. A luxury hotel that has been built around a heritage home, it derives its aesthetic sensibility from the region’s art, architecture and spiritual beliefs (think heirloom veenas, sepia photographs of Bharatnatyam dancers, Chola motifs). Svatma’s owner, architect and Bharatnatyam dancer Krithika Subrahmanian, has restored and designed the property to reflect the city’s ethos in a manner befitting this erstwhile kingdom of wealth and culture. Its two vegetarian restaurants serve delicious Tamil and European fare and there’s a wonderful open-air terrace bar. But, here, too, Maratha cuisine is not in my stars. In the lounge adjoining my room, from across an antique dining table and love seat, a glittering portrait of Serfoji II appears to look at me (in kinship, no doubt) with a hint of a smile. In contrast, Tanjore Hi is high on kitsch. A short walk from the palace, this quirky hotel is a refurbished royal home with trippy, backlit photo collages in shades of pink and blue that ensure psychedelic dreams through the night. Its rooftop restaurant serves a mélange of French and Indian cuisine created for an international palate, and offers a variety of organic coffees and other items from the group’s own plantations and farms. Maratha cuisine continues to elude me, but local fare is close at hand at the Venkata Lodge (known for its pattinam pakoda and patronised by the likes of Indira Gandhi and Sivaji Ganesan back in their day), Sree Ariya Bhavan (where the Chettinad cuisine is to die for) and Sathars, which offers meaty delights in this temple town (try the Ceylon egg paratha and biryani).

Finally, it’s time to find the answer to the task set to me by Chakravarthy. The Nisumba Soodhani (Durga) temple stands close to the palace complex and Tanjore Hi. The goddess’s silver earrings gleam teasingly, but my telephoto lens isn’t powerful enough to view their details and my eyes fail the test. I text Chakravarthy to concede defeat. He reveals the mystery: hidden in the design of each earring is a skull. Thanjavur, like the sunthi, has neatlyunravelled itself before my eyes. “Did you like the city, Madam?” inquires the drive as I crane my neck for one last glimpse of the Cauvery River. In response, I nod my head vigorously. Just like a thalaiatti bommai.

Thanjavur Travel Guide: Top Things to Do in Thanjavur in a Day

Last updated on

Located at the mouth of the Kaveri delta, Thanjavur flourished under the patronage of the Cholas and later, the Nayaks and the Marathas, all of whom contributed, in their own unique ways, to make the city the nerve centre of Tamil architecture, art, culture, and culinary heritage. It is the birthplace of Carnatic music and the Thanjavur style of painting and home to the Brihadeshwara Temple, a UNESCO Heritage Site dating back to the 11th century. Find more about things to do in Thanjavur our Thanjavur Travel Guide.

THANJAVUR, TAMIL NADU / INDIA

Thanjavur, or Tanjore as it was called in colonial times, is one of Tamil Nadu’s famed temple towns. Ruled by the Cholas, the Pandyas, the Vijayanagara kings, the Madurai Nayaks, the Thanjavur Nayaks, the Marathas, and the British over various periods in history, modern Thanjavur is a city with a long and complex history. Beyond the fancy malls, showrooms, and new age apartments, the lanes of Thanjavur lie lined with buildings of historical significance and unassuming studios where artists craft wooden veenas and nurture the forgotten art of Cire Perdue . Here in the Cauvery delta, almost everybody is a connoisseur of art: Over a devara of coffee at one of many old school cafes in the bazaars, you might get an invite for a Bharatnatyam recital or you might get quizzed in musical traditions. After all, Thanjavur is the birthplace of Carnatic music; one of the major styles of Bharatnatyam was developed here; the Thanjavur style of painting, too, flourished here during the reign of the Nayaks in the 16th century. Modern-day Thanjavur is a bustling city, much like any other city you see on the subcontinent, except for the awe-inspiring Brihadeswara Temple whose 63.4 ft tall vimana can be spotted from all over the city.

TIP : The first thing that hits you in Tamil Nadu is the dust. It’s everywhere, in your hair, on your lips, settling in gritty layers on your skin. And then the heat. Even in December, the midday sun will leave you scorched and thirsty. So, before we head out to explore this gem of a town, dress appropriately. Full sleeved shirts and full pants to keep the dust away, a hat or a cap to shield your head from the burning sun, and perhaps even a scarf to cover your face just like the locals do. And of course, don’t forget to carry a bottle of chilled water.

Thanjavur Travel Guide

Morning: brihadeshwara temple | schwartz church.

Begin your day with a traditional Tamilian breakfast of fluffy idlis soaked in sambar, a few vadas with a side of coconut chutney, and a paper-thin ghee-smeared dosa. Vasant Bhavan serves good uttapams , idiyapams, and other local breakfast specialities. If it’s street-side hawkers stalls you prefer, track down the couple who sell idli and vada from a cart near the railway station. The idlis are impossibly soft, the chutney creamy and nutty, and sambar is spiced with just a bit of asafetida to make it taste out of the world! If you speak Tamil, chat with the couple a while.

Post breakfast, head to the Brihadeswara Temple. A visit to this UNESCO site is the top thing to do in Thanjavur. Hire a guide. We can’t recommend it enough. The temple is gigantic and there’s no way you can understand all of the carvings, the symbolism, and the mythology without a guide.

Built between 1003 and 1010 AD by Raja Raja Chola, the Brihadeshwara Temple is the grandest of the three living Chola Temples. The other two are the Airavateswara Temple near Kumbakonam and the Gangaikondacholapuram Temple. The rectangular temple complex contains the sanctum with the towering superstructure ( vimana) , a Nandi mandapam, a community hall, a gathering hall, and a pavilion that connects the great hall with the sanctum. Carvings, inscriptions, and murals adorn the temple. 81 of the 108 dance  karana s (postures) of  Natya Sastra are carved in the walls of the aditala. The ceiling of the Nandi mandapam has a mural dating back to the Nayak dynasty. Chola frescoes narrating Hindu mythology adorn the walls of the circumambulatory pathway. Numerous inscriptions can be found along the temple walls; it was only towards the end of the 19th century that a German archaeologist called Hultzsch discovered that the inscriptions were in Tamil.

Exploring the temple can take anywhere between one and three hours, so start early and budget your time accordingly. Schwartz Church, adjacent to Sivaganga Park, is only 500 metres from the temple. Built in 1779 by Raja Serfoji in honour of the Danish missionary, Rev. Friedrich Christian Schwartz, this church is one of the oldest in South India. Inside the church is a marble tablet that shows the king and his ministers receiving blessings from the dying missionary.

Afternoon: Maratha Palace Complex

No Thanjavur travel guide is complete without a mention of the local food. For lunch, head to Sri Ariya Bhavan Restaurant where you can try regional specialities the Ashoka Halwa. Thevar’s restaurant serves delicious dishes like Kottu Roti, Ginger Chicken, Mutton Varuval, and Chettinad-style preparations. Lunch, at many restaurants, is limited to thalis: expect dal, curries, curd, and tamarind or tomato rice.

Next stop: the Nayak-era Maratha Palace Complex. The Mahratta Durbar Hall, one of Thanjavur’s main attractions, could have well been a showstopper if it hadn’t been vandalized over the years. Sadly, almost every part of the wall in reach has names etched or carved on the surface. Beautiful, vibrant frescoes adorn the ceilings and the upper portions of the walls. It’s utterly Instagrammable and therefore a pity that not many venture deep into the Tamil heartlands, into small-town India in search of such gems. In the Serfoji Memorial Hall, you can see artefacts used by the royal Maratha household.

The Saraswati Mahal Library, a must on all Thanjavur travel guides, is a treasure trove of manuscripts, including some rare palm-leaf manuscripts, in Indian and European languages. On display is a tiny fraction of Serfoji’s eclectic collection; we saw a book displaying Chinese methods of torture, some old maps of Calcutta, a herbology encyclopedia, and Audubon-style botanicals. Recently, a manuscript of recipes written in the Modi script was discovered in the library. Unique preparations fit for royalty (think fish curry with powdered flamingo bones and venison cooked with saffron) share space with simpler dishes like pickled eggs and dals on its pages. If you wish to view collections that are not on display, you must make a prior arrangement with the authorities.

The palace compound has other buildings too. An art gallery displaying archaeological finds, including Chola bronzes and stone sculptures, from the 8th century to the 18th century and the gooda gopuram or arsenal tower, an eight-storied (192 ft) building. Inside the tower, you can find unique ceilings shaped like inverted lotuses and the skeleton of a whale that washed up in Tranquebar. Also of note is the seven-storied bell tower, built in the style of the Gingee Nayaks, and the Sharjah Mahdi (best viewed from East Main Road), a pastel pink building with ornate balconies.

Evening: Shopping

No Thanjavur travel guide can be complete without a mention of Thanjavur’s bustling bazaar where there are shops selling luscious Thanjavur silks, local handicrafts like the famed Bommai dolls with their bobbing heads and colourful skirts, and of course, the famed Thanjavur paintings. Spend the rest of the evening shopping for souvenirs and strolling through the streets, stopping to check out dried fish or fresh flowers. Or, how about buying some fragrant mogra to wear in your hair? One of the most common sights in Tamil Nadu is women in brightly coloured saris wearing gajras in their glossy, black hair. Stop at Dhivya Sweets for some local coffee and savouries. Don’t forget to buy a packet of plantain chips to munch on the way home!

For dinner, head to Thevar’s Biriyani for a plate of delicious Thanjavur-style biriyani. Moist, spicy, and aromatic, the biriyani is some of the best we have tasted. They serve it on a banana leaf alongside portions of raita and two types of chicken curry.

TIP : 15 km north of Thanjavur, on the banks of the Kaveri is Thiruvaiyaru, the town where the legendary Carnatic composer and saint Thyagaraja attained samadhi. Every January, the Thyagaraja Aradhana is held here. Artists from all over the world perform live at the aradhana. It’s a once-in-a-lifetime experience; so, if your travel dates coincide with the Thyagaraja Aradhana festival, come for the music.

Thajavur travel Guide

Best time to visit thanjavur.

Like any Thanjavur travel guide will tell you, South India is hot year-round but summers are unbearable. In winter, the evenings are cool but midday heat is still scorching. November to March is the best time to visit; even then, be prepared to beat the heat with glares and sun hats.

How to Reach Thanjavur

The nearest airport is Tiruchirapalli, from where you can either take a bus or ride a passenger train. Chennai is the nearest major airport. From Chennai, it’s a 6-hour long drive. Buses and overnight trains are available from Chennai to Thanjavur.

We travelled from Pondicherry by bus. The 4-hour bus ride via Kumbakonam was pretty comfortable. Plus, buses in Tamil Nadu play the most eclectic Tamil pop songs! With energetic numbers like Allegra and Sundari Meenakshi, it’s a party all the way! Overnight trains from Pondicherry and Villupuram (nearest major railway station to Pondicherry) to Thanjavur are also available and our Thanjavur travel guide recommends this.

Where to Stay in Thanjavur

We stayed at the Oriental Towers. Basic rooms and friendly service less than 500 m from the railway station! Depending on the room and services, you’ll end up paying anywhere between INR 500 to INR 5000. The in-house restaurant, Red Ruby, serves local and continental fare. Their Chettinad preparations are worth trying!

For a luxury experience, book a stay at the Svatma . Guests can opt for Carnatic concerts, Bharatnatyam recitals, Vedic chanting, cookery classes, and visits with master craftsmen specializing in Thanjavur painting and bronze sculpting. The in-house restaurant serves the best of Thanjavur Maratha dishes, the recipes of which were meticulously collected by the owners from home cooks in the area. Sadly, we couldn’t accommodate a meal here in our tight schedule.

Thanjavur can be a wonderful introduction to India’s heartlands. Bustling markets, delicious South Indian food, a lively arts scene, a UNESCO heritage temple, and close to heritage destinations like Chettinad make Thanjavur a must-stop on your itinerary. Get a glimpse of real India, far from the touristy cities, and spend a few slow days exploring the heart of Tamil Nadu with our Thanjavur travel guide.

Elephant guarding the gateway to Brihadishwara Temple - Thanjavur, Tamil Nadu

Thanjavur (Tanjore)

Here are the ochre foundation blocks of perhaps the most remarkable civilisation of Dravidian history, one of the few kingdoms to expand Hinduism beyond India, a bedrock for aesthetic styles that spread from Madurai to the Mekong. A dizzying historical legacy was forged from Thanjavur, capital of the great Chola empire during its heyday. Today Thanjavur is a crowded, modern Indian town – but the past is still very much present. Every day thousands of people worship at the Cholas' grand Brihadishwara Temple, and the city's labyrinthine royal palace preserves memories of other, later powerful dynasties.

  • Mayiladuthurai
  • Destinations

Rooted in history, Mayiladuthurai is a popular pilgrimage site. Situated on the banks of River Cauvery, the town is dotted with temples, the most prominent of which is the Mayuranathaswami Temple. Dedicated to Lord Shiva, who is worshipped as Mayuranathar, the temple has an interesting legend associated with it. As the story goes, Goddess Parvati had been cursed to be turned into a peahen and she came here to worship Lord Shiva in that form. Thus, the town was named Mayiladuthurai or peacock town. Devotees can also set on a temple trail of nine shrines dedicated to navgraha. These nine temples are dedicated to the nine planets of Hindu astrology, which are Sooryan (Sun), Chandran (Moon), Sevvai (Mars), Budhan (Mercury), Guru (Jupiter), Sukkiran (Venus), Saneeswaran (Saturn), Rahu (North Lunar Node) and Kethu (South Lunar Node).
