She picked us up on time and provided details along the way that made the trip both enjoyable and informative. We couldn't have asked for a better group to go along with either, which of course was pure luck. All of the stops were very nice locations and the tour provides adequate time at each venue. The staffs at each location were also super friendly and clearly enjoyed what they do. While we loved the Konzelmann Winery estate, the wines offered during the tasting were a little disappointing. Our hostess however was exceptional so it did not detract much from our overall experience. We would definitely recommend to anyone looking for something other than a wine tasting only tour. 15 Tips to Plan the Perfect Wine Tasting Vacation

Planning a wine vacation (what we tend to call a wine tasting trip) is not without its challenges. Plotting the right course for your wine vacation is not only time-consuming, but with so many resources at your fingertips online, it can be quite overwhelming simply determining where to start.

How to Plan the Perfect Wine Tasting Trip in Any Region

To simplify both the planning process and your experience while you’re out wine tasting, we’ve compiled a solid list of “do’s and don’ts.” Essentially, this article offers some of the best tips for planning a successful wine tourism vacation — based on our editorial staff’s experience in planning and partaking in wine tasting tours around the world.

Figure Out How Much Time You Have for a Wine Trip

Before setting a budget or picking a region, you must figure out how much time you have available for the perfect wine travel experience. If you’re working full time, you may only have a week or two of vacation. Determining the length of your trip will also be a contributing factor when determining your budget, which we cover next.

RELATED: Browse and Book Wine Tours All Over The World

Set Your Maximum, All-Inclusive Budget

Deciding how much you’re willing to spend on your wine vacation is a quick way to narrow down your options.

If you’re strapped for cash, you might consider a domestic experience and visit an up-and-coming wine region like the Texas Hill Country , where travel, accommodation and tasting costs are relatively low.

If you have a little more money to burn, and still want to stay domestic, you could head over to one of the more pricey regions in California, such as Napa Valley .

Or perhaps you’re looking for a more authentic and exotic experience, such as wine tasting in Piedmont, Italy, Rioja, Spain or Bordeaux, France. Maybe you want to go as far as New Zealand! All of these are fantastic choices for venturing out and exploring the world through wine, but traveling abroad also tends to cost a bit more.

RELATED: 22 Amazing Wineries and Experiences To Enjoy in Rioja Spain

This is why it’s best to set a budget before you pick a destination, so you’re not disappointed in case you can’t afford your dream trip (yet). Be sure to consider location, timing, flight, transport, tasting, food and accommodation costs. If I’m flying to a new wine destination, I always  search for flights on Google Flights first and then use that cost as a baseline for wrapping my head around what ultimately the complete experience may cost. Then, I use Airfarewatchdog to send me flight deal alerts when a deal goes on sale immediately. Searching for hotels on TripAdvisor also helps to source the best price by comparing multiple travel sites.

Narrow Down Your Region

It kind of goes without saying, but an essential step when planning a wine tourism experience is to decide where you want to go. Keep in mind that there are hundreds of “broad” wine regions, within which thousands of sub-appellations exist. One could spend his or her entire life traveling and tasting wine and likely not be able to hit every sub-appellation around the world.

That being said, don’t be too ambitious in choosing your region.

First, start by picking a country. From there, narrow it down to a broad wine region within that country. From there, you can further narrow your trip to specific sub-appellations. Then, within those sub-appellations, you can begin to research individual wineries that suit yours and your fellow travelers’ personal preferences. Let me explain by using Spain as an example:

I’ve decided that I want to visit Spain for a wine vacation. I know that “La Rioja” is a famous wine-growing region within North Central Spain. After doing my research, I now know that there are three sub-appellations within La Rioja — Rioja Baja, Rioja Alavesa and Rioja Alta. Now, let’s assume that I have one week allotted for my trip. Again, after doing my research, I know that that’s plenty of time to visit all three sub-appellations in some way shape or form. I may not be able to visit every winery within each sub-appellation, but I should be able to have a pretty immersive experience in each, given the amount of time I would have available to me.

You get the idea. If you have more than one week for a wine vacation, you might also consider visiting multiple “broad” regions within one or two countries. It’s dependent upon your individual situation.

Narrow Down The Kind of Experience You Want – Tips for Planning a Wine Trip

This is another great tip for planning the perfect wine tasting trip. Another way to further narrow down your options and cut through the exorbitant amount of red tape often involved with planning a vacation.

What are you looking to get out of this trip? Are you going by yourself, with a group, with a significant other or spouse? Are you trying to just get drunk? Are you looking for something romantic? Are you looking to integrate an active itinerary with adventure mixed in between tastings?

All of the above are great questions, and each should be answered before you move further on with planning your trip and deciding on individual wineries.

Select the Time of Year for Your Wine Tasting Vacation

For wine professionals, this is a common-sense thing to consider when planning a wine vacation. But as wine tourism in recent years has sky-rocketed to becoming one of the preferred styles of experiential travel, a lot of people are unaware that time of year can have a huge impact on your ultimate experience. Why? Well, for starters, depending on what hemisphere you’re looking to travel to, you might unknowingly arrive in the middle of winter.

RELATED: Advantages and Disadvantages To Visiting Wine Country During Each Season

The Northern Hemisphere experiences Summer generally between June, July, and August. Conversely, the Southern Hemisphere experiences their Summer between December, January, and February. Also note that grape harvests in the Northern Hemisphere typically occur between September and October, while grape harvesting in the Southern Hemisphere generally occurs between March and April.

The above being said, consider what you’re looking to see in any given wine region and the kind of experience you want. If you want to experience a winery at harvest time, plan accordingly. If you don’t want to be cold, avoid the winter months. If Spring is more your thing and you want to see the vines just starting to bud, you’ll need to consider timing appropriately. You get the idea.

Consider Proximity (Airport, Hotels, Distance Between Wineries)

So now you’ve narrowed down your travel time, budget and general location. It’s time to get more specific.

First, depending on your preferred style of travel, it makes sense to plot a course in relation to how you travel. At this point, you should have a general idea of what flight(s) you’re taking and what airport you’ll be flying into. From there, you can begin to research wineries within whatever sub-appellations are closest to the airport. It’s best to begin selecting wineries, before booking hotels, as many wineries even offer accommodation options,  such as Marques de Riscal in La Rioja .

Proximity, in general, is critical to having a good experience. Maybe you’re looking to spread out your wine tastings to explore a landscape. Maybe you’re planning on drinking a lot so you’d rather not have to drive far. Or, maybe you’ve decided to have someone drive you around the entire time, which offers more flexibility and less worry. You also don’t want to end up dozens of miles from the nearest restaurant or hotel at the end of the day, so think about logistics throughout every step of your planning.

Consider Transportation Options

Taking proximity a step further, deciding on how you want to get around is critical to planning the perfect trip.

I prefer to drive myself and simply be cautious about how much I’ve been drinking when I’m winery touring. Others prefer to avoid this entirely and opt to use buses or pre-planned chauffeur services within whichever region they’re visiting. Additionally, some regions and specific wineries have dedicated guides, who will pick you up from your hotel, take you to lunch and a series of wineries within your preferred region.

It’s best to explore all of these options and be sure not to burn yourself out in one day. You can also mix it up, as we mentioned earlier. Drive yourself one day, use a guide the second day, etc. In any case, remember that ultimately you’ll need to eat, get back safely to your hotel and ultimately leave the region at the end of your trip. So again, think through logistics on a micro-level.

Tours vs. Tastings

Deciding on or mixing up Wine Tours vs. Wine Tastings is also a great way to narrow down your wine vacation experience. First, let’s define a wine tour vs. a wine tasting.

Wine Tours:  Generally, a guided tour by a winery employee or owner who takes you through their grounds and or vineyard property, which also includes tastings at the end.

Wine Tasting:  Generally, flights of wine are poured by bar staff at individual wineries (typically about 1 ounce), which allows the consumer to taste the varying styles of wine produced by the Vintner.

RELATED:   6 Different Wine Tasting Experiences To Try

First of all, some wineries don’t offer tours, so if you run into that you may already be able to knock some off your list. Secondly, wine tastings can be great, but they usually don’t provide a more emotional connection to the winery since you aren’t also visiting the grounds and learning about the winemaking process. Of course, there are many wineries out there that have excellent bar staff and can still offer a phenomenal experience.

A general rule for me on deciding on tours vs. tastings is two-fold. First, I look for wine tours at wineries that have exceptional grounds. A beautiful property is typically worth a tour as long as it isn’t too overpriced. Wineries that have smaller grounds and or unimpressive scenery may make more sense for simply tasting. Keep in mind, just because a winery may not have the most beautiful architecture, landscape or views doesn’t mean that they aren’t producing fantastic wine.

Second, I think it’s critical to try both tours and tastings. Based on the criteria I mentioned above, do your wine tours at fancy or well-known properties, and simply taste at the less impressive ones. This allows for a flexible, more immersive experience.

Reservations

So now you know the difference between a winery tour and a wine tasting. Keep in mind that as you continue planning your trip, you’re also going to need to figure out whether or not reservations are required for a visit in general. Many corporate  and  mom-and-pop wineries only allow visiting when a reservation is made. Conversely, many allow you to simply show up and say “I’m Here, Let me drink.”

Depending on the research you’re doing into visiting a region, you’re probably going to find both. You’ll need to decide whether or not you feel the wineries that require reservations are worth the visit or not. Once you’ve conceded yourself to a reservation, you’re going to need to try your best to make it. For some, this can be stressful having to rush from appointment to appointment. Others prefer the structure. Figure out what kind of experience you want and then book accordingly. I tend to interchange reservations and non-reservation required wineries on most of my trips.

For instance, on the first day, I may just want the freedom to roam with no time constraints. On the second day, perhaps there’s an epic winery I want to visit which requires a reservation, so I stick to a more structured schedule.

Know Your Favorite Style(s) of Wine

Another way to further narrow down the best wine vacation experience is to plan your tours and tastings around your favorite grapes! Consider researching individual wineries, and if possible, buy some of their wines at your local liquor store to get a sense of what they craft. More often than not, wineries will have styles of wine that they’re known for, and you can potentially plan your wine trip based around grape varieties and or blends that you prefer. A good way to figure this out is to use a wine rating application, like Vivino, to scan for wines by a particular winery and see what other consumers have rated them as. If you know you love a good Cabernet Sauvignon, and a winery you’re considering makes a Cabernet but you’re not sure if the quality — look the brand up on Vivino and search for the Cabernet to see where it stands.

RELATED:  Explore the Okanagan Valley in British Columbia, Canada

Conversely, you may be a very open-minded traveler and taster, like myself. If that’s the case, it’s still good to know what kind of wine styles are your favorite. When you get to any given region, you can tell your guide or winery staff the style of taste preference you have, and they can attempt to match that flavor preference with a grape variety perhaps you didn’t even know about! It’s this sort of open-mindedness that makes both wine and travel fun.

Familiarize Yourself with What the Region is Known For

At this point in your wine vacation planning, you’ve probably learned a decent amount about whatever region it is you’re visiting. Below, we’ll quickly list off a few other things you should familiarize yourself with before your visit.

What grape(s) is the region best known for?

When does the region harvest their grapes?

Have I done my research on the general history of the wine region?

Should I familiarize myself with local winemaking practices so I can appreciate the region more?

What is the average cost for a bottle of wine in the region?

What is the average cost of a tour in the region?

What is the average cost of a tasting in the region?

Generally, how does ‘tipping’ work in the region?

Consider the Climate, Pack Accordingly

Again, touching on what we mentioned earlier regarding the time of year when planning a wine vacation — be conscious of the general climate and weather conditions. Make sure you pack appropriate seasonal clothing and also take into account driving conditions if you are renting a car.

Also, it makes sense to get a free Travel Insurance quote  from a trusted provider to protect yourself from any “What If’s” that may arise on your trip. It could save a lot of money.

Using a Guide to Plan it For You

There are several companies out there that offer all-inclusive, guided packages for wine tours all over the world. Additionally, many of the appellations themselves are essentially marketing hubs and can offer recommendations or pre-packed itineraries you can simply follow along with.

Having your wine vacation planned for you comes with both its ups and downs. On one hand, the logistics are largely taken care of. On the other hand, you may be sacrificing your freedom. This comes down to the kind of traveler you are. Make sure to research your preferred region extensively and search around for possible package options. Many regions also have their own websites, which often mention guides, travel agents or wineries you can contact ahead of time to book your trip for you. We list a number of guided wine tours right here that can be customizable.

Know Where You’re Eating Ahead of Time

At this point, there’s a good chance you’ve got your general itinerary down. You know where you’re flying into and out of, what wineries you’re visiting and where you’re staying. But did you select restaurants ahead of time? Many wine travelers are guilty of omitting or completely forgetting about eating. Trust me, when you’re out on the road in the middle of a beautiful landscape, it’s easy to forget. At the same time, you don’t want to be stranded and have no idea where to go eat. Locating a restaurant on the spot can be incredibly time-consuming. Be sure to research restaurants in the area and have them marked down on your itinerary, with addresses and phone numbers so you can quickly navigate and pull an audible if necessary.

Additionally, be sure to pack some snacks that aren’t too light. If you’re on a tight schedule, you may not have time to have as big a meal as you’d like. As you’ll be drinking, it’s important to keep a base of food in your stomach to slow the absorption of alcohol.

Bringing Wine Home with You

Many wine tourists stumble (literally) across a beautiful style of wine they tried at a tasting or on a wine tour. It’s very common for these consumers to want to bring a few bottles home with them. Consider this ahead of time, and either bring a suitcase that allows for wine storage while traveling or set some money aside in your overall budget to account for purchasing wine and potentially having it shipped home. If you’re looking for a good suitcase to transport wine back home with you, check out this highly-rated 12 bottle case .

Travel Connected

Some people are going to disagree with me on this. Many travelers prefer to be “unplugged” from their digital lives that they’re so consumed by at home. If that’s you, ignore this tip. However, I do advise having some form of connectivity when traveling, especially abroad. Having a GPS and or a general, interactive map can be invaluable to saving you both time and money as you navigate a foreign region. Also, you may get to a point where you don’t know where to eat, or you get a flat tire, or you run out of gas (which happened to me in British Columbia recently). Save yourself that hassle and have some form of an emergency contact. Many carriers, such as Verizon, now offer pretty great deals on getting service abroad. For as little as $10 a day in Europe ($2 / day in Canada), I was able to have access to 8 Gigs of data throughout my entire trip.

Read Reviews

At this point, your trip should be pretty much booked and you should be pretty excited. However, if you’re still unsure about certain aspects, don’t be afraid to look up reviews! Whether it’s of the wineries, hotels, restaurants, whatever you may be unsure about — reviews are incredibly helpful. We frequently review itineraries, wines and individual wineries here at Winetraveler, so keep an eye on our app — which integrates reviews from multiple sources.

You can also browse our database of wineries around the world and filter down to wineries in certain regions that fit your travel preferences.

It really helped when you mentioned how it is recommended to set up a budget when planning a wine tasting tour. I can understand that doing this can help you not only choose the best tour for your pocket but also make the most of it. My sister was talking about how she was planning a bachelorette party wine tasting, so I wanted to look into it.

Setting a budget is always a great starting point because it helps you determine the limitations of your trip from the beginning. From there, you can drill down realistically how many places you can afford to visit depending on the kind of experiences you want.

It was really nice how you said that winery tour includes having the owner or a winery employee take the tourists around the grounds or through the orchard of the property and can include tastings in the end. So, I guess what I really do want to do is to have a winery tour. I like wine, but I’m not really into tasting every single wine available in the cellar. Tours always provide a more intimate and custom-tailored experience. I really recommend them especially if you can speak with the the vineyard ahead of time, lock down a price and confirm the kind if experience you’d like. If you visit during the less trafficked months (Winter –> Early Spring), you can sometimes get them for free as a walk-in experience too.

Can I wear jeans to a winery?

Yes! Jeans are acceptable year-round – we call it wine country casual (for women — sundresses, blouses and skirts, nice jeans, wedges, sandals, etc.; for men – golf shirts, khaki pants, nice jeans, dressier shorts, stylish sneakers, boat shoes, etc.).

A more upscale winery might call for darker denim, and be sure to dress in layers as many winery experiences take place outdoors and tours often take guests through wine caves and chilled cellar areas.

How do I taste wine?

First of all: Wine should be enjoyed , so don't overthink it – have fun and drink what you like.

If you want to taste like a professional:

  • LOOK at the color and clarity
  • SWIRL to release the aromas
  • SNIFF to prepare your palate
  • SIP and enjoy the complexities
  • Spit into a "dump bucket" if you don't want to get inebriated.

Common Questions

What is the cancellation policy.

There are different cancellation policies, depending on the specific tour, tasting, or activity you select. We encourage you to carefully review the cancellation policy associated with your experience prior to finalizing your reservation. This information is readily available under the “Booking & Cancellation Policy” section for each experience offered.

How far in advance do I need to book?

For most activities, you must reserve the experience at least 5 days ahead. However, certain experiences, especially those involving multiple-course food and wine tastings, may require up to 14 days. We recommend checking the specific details for each activity regarding advance booking requirements.

Are children allowed?

Traveling with family is a wonderful way to create lasting memories! Currently, our “Secret Horseback Riding Adventure” is the only experience specifically designed to welcome guests aged 12 and up. We are actively working to expand our offerings to include more family-friendly activities in the near future.

What is the largest group size you can accommodate?

Group reservations are only necessary when your group size exceeds the maximum number of travelers that can book an experience on a single reservation. Should your party exceed this limit, a group reservation is required. To arrange a booking for larger parties or to inquire about specific group accommodations, kindly reach out to us at [email protected].

I found Nick through yelp - and I'm so glad I did! Nick was incredible. It was so easy to book and communicate with him and his pricing was incredibly reasonable. We booked him for my sister's birthday. We had Nick plan the day for us - we told him our preferences and he nailed it. He booked smaller, family-owned vineyards which made the experience so special and he booked us private wine tastings. It truly was the best tastings we've ever done - the private wine tastings let us learn so much more about the winery and the wines themselves, and it was an absolute blast. Nick's van was awesome - he had sparkling wine for us as a toast, and his van was stocked with water and fun snacks. He was prompt at picking us up and it was so fun chatting with him as we drove around and hearing the knowledge he had about Napa valley. We learned so much from him! I would 100% book Nick again and hugely recommend him and his concierge services. Thank you again Nick for an awesome day!

Nick was knowledgeable, friendly, respectful, and courteous! He got us to all of our reservations on time and was a great host with drinks and snacks at the ready. Would recommend!

100% would recommend this Napa tour! Nick selected the most beautiful and off the beaten path wineries. He was very friendly and took care of the bookings, drive times and snacks/lunch so left our group to just enjoy the experience. We loved the experience so much that we booked him a second day!

cannot say enough good things about Nick and the wine tours he plans! Yesterday was my third tour with him and, once again, he knocked it out od the park! Our first tour was 11 years ago, and he has consistently provide a phenomenal experience! Nick has introduced us to wonderful wineries with lovely hosts and hostesses and great wine club options. He picks places that meet the need of the group we are with, and he's consistently hired by our friends when they return to Napa after visiting with us. In a scale of one to ten, Nick is a solid 100!

Thank you for the wonderful review Christina! I can’t thank you all enough for continuing to use my service for over ten years! See you guys in October!

Nick Perata was great! Super nice guy. He communicates quickly and effectively, is punctual, helped me set up a wonderful day for our party, and his limo van is perfection! Very spacious, clean, and fun! Our itinerary could not have been better!

Thank you for the thoughtful review Carolina! You guys were the best crew! It was my pleasure! Hope to see you all again!

Nick and his limo van provide peace of mind. Simple as that. My large party of 10 enjoyed touring through Napa's wineries without worrying about a DD. It was such a treat being able to travel, laugh, and sing together in one car instead of three, which really helped us focus on the celebration at hand. Nick was incredibly communicative and accommodating, and I would highly recommend his services for anyone who wants to tour Napa worry-free! Thank you, Nick!

Minh - it was a pleasure to meet you all! Happy Birthday to your wife! Thanks for taking the time to post a review! Hope to see you guys again sometime!

Pattie - always great to see you guys! Thanks for choosing my services for your private charter needs while in Sonoma and Napa wine country! I look forward to your next visit!

Nick & Perata Luxury Tours hit a home run with our group of 8! I would highly recommend his concierge services to plan your trip to various wineries throughout Napa Valley. We visited both small/private wineries and large ones with thoughtful stops along the way for lunch/snacks and shopping. The touring van was immaculate and we were so comfortable. Nick was east to work with and always on time!

Nov 27, 2023

Shanna - it was so nice to meet you and your awesome family! Thanks for your business, and I can’t wait to see you and the crew again!

Nick Perata's Napa area tour added so much fun, safety and beauty to our college reunion gathering. The coach was impeccable, well stocked with water and other beverages, safety features were pointed out before we started out, and Nick offered insights and fun to the entire experience. A definite 5 time !

Bucket List on a budget: How to explore California Wine country without going broke

Enjoy wine tasting, local markets and more.

Wine Country is a bucket list destination for wine lovers and gourmands thanks to endless tastings, culinary delights and gorgeous scenery that can put any mind at ease.

PHOTO: Toasting with wine glasses

It's not cheap, though, and those on a budget might find it difficult to carve out the cash they need to plan their dream vacation in Napa.

To help, "Good Morning America" scoped out plenty of ways to save on this dream vacation.

Getting there

Situated north of San Francisco, many flights from all over the country will get you to Northern California and -- with perhaps a short layover -- many can do it on a budget.

The peak seasons for traveling to Wine Country are March through May and August through October, so going outside of those times may save you a bit of money.

For instance, you can check out Delta for various packages including flights and hotels stays.

Where to stay

There are a few different regions in Wine Country for you to explore including two primary areas, Napa and Sonoma -- according to experts who spoke with "GMA," Sonoma is a bit less expensive.

Lodging is typically the most expensive portion of your trip, so "GMA" found the Flamingo Resort & Spa , a "Midcentury Modern marvel" located in the heart of Sonoma Wine Country that's offering plenty of deals all summer long so you can enjoy their spa, wellness activities, delicious Lazeaway Club eatery and more.

Food & fun for the whole family

PHOTO: Winery in Northern California with Open Sign

Sonoma Wine Country is a wine and food lover's paradise, and the approximately 475 vineyards in the area offer ample chance to indulge at every turn.

You can expect to spend around $100 per person on reservations at most places, or you can hit Big John's Market and create your own basket of cheese, fruit and other nibbles before heading to a winery that allows you to picnic.

You can also make reservations at Quivira starting at $35 per person of $50 per table, but the cost gets you credit toward wine and other goods.

For a more kid-friendly experience, try Safari West: The Sonoma Serengeti where more than 400 rolling acres let nearly 1,000 animals representing over 90 distinct species like African antelopes, primates, birds and more can be observed and appreciated.

Nomadic Matt: Travel Cheaper, Longer, Better

The Best Walking Tours in Bologna

A quiet street in sunny Bologna, Italy while taking a walking tour

Located in Northern Italy, Bologna is considered one of the food capitals of Italy . And given Italy’s culinary reputation, that must be saying something.

Food is what draws most visitors here ( it’s what drew me there ). I had heard it’s the place for foodies in Italy and I was not disappointed.

Unsurprisingly, there are lots of amazing food tours here that allow you to eat your way around town while learning about the region’s traditional cuisine. There are also wine tours galore plus plenty of history-oriented tours to ensure you learn about this food-centric city’s past.

In short, Bologna is the perfect place to take a walking tour. And, since I love walking tours of all kind, I took a bunch while I was in town. Some were great, some were ok, some where terrible . Here’s the best walking tours I took in Bologna to help you plan your visit:

Best Overall Tour

The Take Walks walking tour company logo

Take Walks is my go-to tour company in Italy, offering access to places that no other gets and featuring incredibly knowledgeable guides. I always have fun and learn a lot on these tours. I can’t recommend them enough.

Their Tastes & Traditions tour lasts 3.5 hours and includes nine mouth-watering offerings (plus coffee and wine). You’ll get to visit markets, sample artisan fare, and learn all about traditional cuisine. If you only do one tour here, make it this one.

Best Free Tour

Lisbon chill-out tour yellow logo

Free Walking Tour Bologna

Offered daily, this is the best (and most popular) free tour in town and a good introduction to Bologna. It lasts two hours and covers all the highlights, including Piazza Nettuno, the Jewish Ghetto, Piazza Maggiore, and more. It’s informative without being boring and perfect primer for first-time visitors. Just remember to tip your guide at the end!

While those are my favorite paid and free tour operators in town, Bologna as a lot more to offer walking tour companies. Here are three other companies I like a lot:

1. Do Eat Better

If you’ve still got an appetite, join Do Eat Better’s Traditional Food Tour . Led by an expert local guide, this 3.5-hour tour makes stops at four hand-picked eateries, where you can try fresh pasta, artisanal ice cream, locally sourced meats, and more (you’ll definitely leave full). I especially like that you not only get to try some amazing traditional food but get off the tourist trail and beat the crowds. It’s a must-do tour for foodies.

Tours start at 90 EUR.

Book here!

2. Bologna Wine

If you’re like me and love vino, you’re going to want to book this guided wine tour . It’s led by a sommelier and features a wide variety of wines from around Bologna. You’ll visit lesser-known spots, try some unique vintages, and develop a deeper appreciation for the region’s wines. You’ll also get to stop at the city’s oldest tavern, which I think is really neat. Tours last 2-3 hours (depending on which you book) and include 2-5 glasses of wine (again, depending on the tour). The guides really know their stuff, so you’ll learn a ton on this tour.

Tours start at 69 EUR.

3. Travelhoo

To burn off all the amazing food you’ve been enjoying, take a guided bike tour with Travelhoo. Over the course of 2.5 hours, you’ll learn about Bologna’s long history and visit its main sights, such as Piazza Maggiore, the Basilica of San Petronio, and the Neptune Fountain. It’s a solid introduction to the city and how it came to be the food and wine hub that it is today.

While this is an active tour, the guide leads you at a leisurely pace, so you don’t need to be super fit to enjoy it.

Tours start at 75 EUR.

Bologna may not get the attention that Rome or Venice do, but when it comes to food, it holds its own. Take one of the walking tours above and learn about its history and culture and feast on the amazing eats that have put the city on the map for centuries!

And while these are my favourite tours in the city, the website GetYourGuide has lots more options so check them out if you’re looking for additional tours!

Book Your Accommodation You can book your hostel with Hostelworld as they have the biggest inventory and best deals. If you want to stay somewhere other than a hostel, use Booking.com as they consistently return the cheapest rates for guesthouses and cheap hotels.

Don’t Forget Travel Insurance Travel insurance will protect you against illness, injury, theft, and cancellations. It’s comprehensive protection in case anything goes wrong. I never go on a trip without it as I’ve had to use it many times in the past. My favorite companies that offer the best service and value are:

  • Medjet (for additional evacuation coverage)

Savvino-storozhevsky monastery and museum.

Savvino-Storozhevsky Monastery and Museum

Zvenigorod's most famous sight is the Savvino-Storozhevsky Monastery, which was founded in 1398 by the monk Savva from the Troitse-Sergieva Lavra, at the invitation and with the support of Prince Yury Dmitrievich of Zvenigorod. Savva was later canonised as St Sabbas (Savva) of Storozhev. The monastery late flourished under the reign of Tsar Alexis, who chose the monastery as his family church and often went on pilgrimage there and made lots of donations to it. Most of the monastery’s buildings date from this time. The monastery is heavily fortified with thick walls and six towers, the most impressive of which is the Krasny Tower which also serves as the eastern entrance. The monastery was closed in 1918 and only reopened in 1995. In 1998 Patriarch Alexius II took part in a service to return the relics of St Sabbas to the monastery. Today the monastery has the status of a stauropegic monastery, which is second in status to a lavra. In addition to being a working monastery, it also holds the Zvenigorod Historical, Architectural and Art Museum.

Belfry and Neighbouring Churches

my country wine tour

Located near the main entrance is the monastery's belfry which is perhaps the calling card of the monastery due to its uniqueness. It was built in the 1650s and the St Sergius of Radonezh’s Church was opened on the middle tier in the mid-17th century, although it was originally dedicated to the Trinity. The belfry's 35-tonne Great Bladgovestny Bell fell in 1941 and was only restored and returned in 2003. Attached to the belfry is a large refectory and the Transfiguration Church, both of which were built on the orders of Tsar Alexis in the 1650s.

my country wine tour

To the left of the belfry is another, smaller, refectory which is attached to the Trinity Gate-Church, which was also constructed in the 1650s on the orders of Tsar Alexis who made it his own family church. The church is elaborately decorated with colourful trims and underneath the archway is a beautiful 19th century fresco.

Nativity of Virgin Mary Cathedral

my country wine tour

The Nativity of Virgin Mary Cathedral is the oldest building in the monastery and among the oldest buildings in the Moscow Region. It was built between 1404 and 1405 during the lifetime of St Sabbas and using the funds of Prince Yury of Zvenigorod. The white-stone cathedral is a standard four-pillar design with a single golden dome. After the death of St Sabbas he was interred in the cathedral and a new altar dedicated to him was added.

my country wine tour

Under the reign of Tsar Alexis the cathedral was decorated with frescoes by Stepan Ryazanets, some of which remain today. Tsar Alexis also presented the cathedral with a five-tier iconostasis, the top row of icons have been preserved.

Tsaritsa's Chambers

my country wine tour

The Nativity of Virgin Mary Cathedral is located between the Tsaritsa's Chambers of the left and the Palace of Tsar Alexis on the right. The Tsaritsa's Chambers were built in the mid-17th century for the wife of Tsar Alexey - Tsaritsa Maria Ilinichna Miloskavskaya. The design of the building is influenced by the ancient Russian architectural style. Is prettier than the Tsar's chambers opposite, being red in colour with elaborately decorated window frames and entrance.

my country wine tour

At present the Tsaritsa's Chambers houses the Zvenigorod Historical, Architectural and Art Museum. Among its displays is an accurate recreation of the interior of a noble lady's chambers including furniture, decorations and a decorated tiled oven, and an exhibition on the history of Zvenigorod and the monastery.

Palace of Tsar Alexis

my country wine tour

The Palace of Tsar Alexis was built in the 1650s and is now one of the best surviving examples of non-religious architecture of that era. It was built especially for Tsar Alexis who often visited the monastery on religious pilgrimages. Its most striking feature is its pretty row of nine chimney spouts which resemble towers.

Draws & Fades: Slow start for Scottie Scheffler opens doors at Charles Schwab Challenge

Draws and Fades

Change Text Size

World no. 1 Scottie Scheffler’s slow start at the Charles Schwab Challenge has opened the door for his competitors at Colonial Country Club.

The +275-pre-tournament favorite, who was as short as +150 early in his performance, battled to an almost baffling 2-over 72 to sit seven shots off the pace after the opening round. After two early birdies, the Texan dropped two bogeys on his card before a triple bogey six at the par-3 13th.

It left Scheffler a distant T79, needing a big rebound Friday morning just to make the cut, let alone challenge for the title. Regardless, BetMGM Sportsbook still had Scheffler at +1000 odds. The closest odds to him from anyone at the same spot on the leaderboard was +30000.

Charley Hoffman took the lead with an afternoon 65, defying the gustier conditions of the day to post up alone at 5-under. The WM Phoenix Open runner-up is looking to go one better in Fort Worth.

Charley Hoffman sinks a 34-foot birdie putt at Charles Schwab

The morning wave saw a quintet of players posting at 4-under 66, including my pre-tournament outright selection of Tony Finau.

Finau was buoyed by making 102 feet of putts, leaving the question of whether he’s put up a score during a slightly off hitting day and will improve from here, or will his putting revert slightly, leaving his scratchy hitting exposed?

Current Open Champion Brian Harman also shot 66, a bogey-free effort that ended with 10 straight pars after four early birdies. His all-around game was lovely, but it was his approach play that led the way.

Martin Laird, Davis Riley and S.H. Kim were the other morning wave 66s.

Robby Shelton, Hayden Buckley, Pierceson Coody and Callum Tarren are two shots off the pace at 3-under.

Here are the latest outright odds from BetMGM Sportsbook with my thoughts on moves from this point on below.

  • +700 : Tony Finau (-4, T2)

Tony Finau +700*

I’m almost afraid to list Finau here in this column given the jinx it’s been for me of late but if I loved him before the tournament started it wouldn’t be right to ditch him now. The key for Finau this week was having a good week on the greens and he’s started that way, ranked ninth in the field in Strokes Gained: Putting. That’s a significant improvement on his season rank of 158th. He will need to maintain this. I also expect an uptick in his approach play, which ranked 33rd in Round 1 but sits fourth on the season, including leading the field at the PGA Championship last week.

Tony Finau’s Round 1 highlights from Charles Schwab

The asterisk * above is there for a reason. Finau is not due back out until Friday afternoon and as such, I expect his number could drift out a little more before he gets started again. The man himself said he’s not the biggest fan of playing early / late.

“I always liked late / early, just because if you're playing well you got a short night, you're back at it seems like pretty fast. Whenever you're early / late it seems like maybe it's two different tournaments you're playing,” Finau said.

“Today was a great day, but it's now another 24 hours before I play tomorrow, so it's almost like a whole other tournament. You take 'em as they come.”

You can hold off and check his number right before he goes out Friday and perhaps get some more value.

Brian Harman +800 *

Much like Finau above, the play is to hold on Harman until close to his afternoon tee time on Friday to perhaps get a little more juice but I still like the Open Champion as a course fit over the next three rounds. His methodical tee-to-green game here (ranked fourth in Round 1) is just what Colonial Country Club orders and he only needs to crank up the putter to a reasonable clip.

He was 45th with the putter on Thursday, down from his season rank of 19 and I think as he learns the new greens here the next few days he could become a separator. Led the field Thursday in GIR, a huge stat for this tournament, and also in Scrambling. Top of the pops also in par-4 scoring, back nine scoring plus bogey and 3-putt avoidance. Has three previous top-10s at Colonial but hasn’t had a TOUR top-10 since his runner-up effort at THE PLAYERS.

“I haven't had the results that I feel like that I probably should have the last few weeks, but I'm playing some pretty good golf and it was nice to get off to a good start,” he said.

Lottery Picks

A combination of SG: Putting and SG: Approach has been the recipe at Colonial Country Club before its renovation. If this is to hold true, the first-round players who ranked highly in both include Martin Laird (+4000) and Hayden Buckley (+12500).

Scottie Scheffler +1000

Here I go again, tempting fate with the world’s best player. But here’s the thing, this number just isn’t fair to the consumer. I’m hoping any Scheffler fans jumped on the +1600 on offer on Thursday before a late birdie, because 10 to 1, from here, just doesn’t appear worth the risk. And I’m not convinced even 16-1 will work out for you.

Scheffler will absolutely improve his approach game on Friday. The man ranks first on TOUR but on Thursday was 117th in this 132-man field. That won’t happen again, and so you will likely see him grind his way to the weekend even with his B game. But my concern is his 98th in SG: Putting. Of late, on his way to four wins in six starts, his putting has remained in the positive. But at -1.185 Thursday it appears this won’t be the case this week. And that lone issue could ultimately stop him from making a big enough rebound to contend in a serious manner.

Remember Scheffler has plenty of distractions going on, from his upcoming court situation to being at home with his newborn son. A locked-in Scheffler can still win from here, but with bigger fish to fry in the next month, this might be time for him to conserve his energy.
