I think it was after 2008’s hilariously misbegotten The Happening that posters stopped advertising M. Night Shyamalan . He was a selling point before that, every bit as important to a film’s marketing as Bruce Willis, Sigourney Weaver, or pre-meltdown Mel Gibson. One could argue he was cruising on the cultural cache of The Sixth Sense that whole time, but there was a cult adoration surrounding his Unbreakable and a healthy respect for the great-until-the-end Signs . It was The Village ’s ending that made us doubt him and Lady in the Water that made us turn on him. But it wasn’t until The Happening happened that Hollywood realized he had gone from highlight to liability. You had to squint to find his name on the posters for The Last Airbender and After Earth , and you’ll have to do the same with The Visit .

His loss, however, is our gain, because no longer do Shyamalan’s movies need to feel like an event. Such expectations hindered our enjoyment of his films — “What’s the twist, what’s the twist, gimme the twist!” — and filled Shyamalan with a lunatic ambition that crumpled under the weight of his fancifulness (see: Lady in the Water ). The Visit is Shyamalan’s first truly original effort since The Happening — The Last Airbender was an adaptation of a beloved animated series, and After Earth was willed into existence by monsters — and it’s refreshing to see the auteur not only returning to the horror genre but refraining from bending it in a way that nullifies its impact.

The Visit follows Becca ( Olivia DeJonge ) and Tyler ( Ed Oxenbould ), two teenagers who are meeting their estranged grandparents for the very first time. Nana ( Deanna Dunagan ) and Pop Pop ( Peter McRobbie ) are an odd couple, however, and questions about their relationship with Becca and Tyler’s mother are met with resistance. There’s also the erratic behavior that occurs after dark and that curious bundle of shitty diapers in the shed out back. Things, as you might guess, get even weirder from there, and it’s intriguingly difficult to parse whether the problem is corporeal or supernatural.

It’s also filmed in the “found footage” subgenre of horror, a style of filming Shyamalan justifies by having Becca and Tyler film a documentary about the visit. Enough keystrokes have been clacked about the genre’s low points, but Shyamalan finds a way to sidestep those hazards. For one, he respects the convention, allowing the horror to unfold without the aid of shrieking strings. He culls more terror from slow pans and harshly lit faces easing into frame than he does cheap jump scares. Shyamalan also eschews the nausea-inducing shaky cam, opting instead for static, exquisitely framed shots that foster an uneasy calm. His enduring love for rural Pennsylvania is also on display as Becca’s camera lingers on skeletal winter branches and snowy fields.

Where the film falters is in its characterizations. Becca and Tyler are defined by a broad set of quirks — she fancies herself an intellectual, while he’s a germaphobe and budding rapper — that do little to evoke empathy or understanding, despite the film’s halfhearted attempts to make them victims of a deadbeat dad. It’s not helped by the precociousness of the child actors, especially Oxenbould’s Poochie-like turn as Tyler. Of course, much of that could be blamed on Shyamalan’s script, which farts out more dad jokes than Larry Crowne . Someone tell Shyamalan that 13-year old kids don’t know Sarah McLachlan or Shania Twain, nor do they regularly joke about them. Also, M. Night, just because you’ve heard of Tyler, the Creator doesn’t mean all rap sounds like Tyler, the Creator. Oxenbould’s Yo! MTV Raps freestyling is more Doctor Dré than Dr. Dre.

Fortunately, The Visit gets less cute as it approaches its climax, especially once Shyamalan’s trademark twist rears its head. Sure, the director’s propensity for twists became a punchline after The Village — “What a twist!” — but The Visit ’s third act revelation is a doozy, a singular moment that suddenly brings the rest of the film into focus as it makes you facepalm yourself for not figuring it out sooner. Those final 15 minutes are gloriously stupid and joyously breathless.

If only he’d left it there. Unfortunately, The Visit overstays its welcome, tacking on a denouement that strains for the emotional heft Shyamalan brought to The Sixth Sense and Signs . The thing is, it didn’t need it. It works best as a simple, effective spooker. But with The Visit , Shyamalan is showing signs that while ambition is admirable, sometimes it’s better to just tell a good story.

Ich gehöre wahrlich nicht zu den Leuten, die bei einer Verfilmung immer eine 1:1-Verfilmung wünschen. Im Gegenteil, ich finde normalerweise, dass eine Verfilmung meist erst dann eine Berechtigung hat, wenn es interessante, neue Ideen einbringt und die Mittel des anderen Mediums nutzt. Sonst kann man mM nach auch das Buch lesen bzw. in diesen Fall das Theaterstück gucken. In dieser Version von Der Besuch der alten Dame finde ich die Veränderungen allerdings wenig gelungen, weil durch sie alles auf ein konservatives Fernsehpublikum zugeschnitten wird. Sämtliches Groteske wird entfernt: Aus dem Panther wird ein Hund, aus den Elfenbeinprothesen eine Krücke, die Eunuchen fehlen vollständig, ebenso der mitgeschleppte Sarg etc. Damit wird leider alles Komische aus der Tragikomödie entfernt, was diese Version…

Mit “Der Besuch der alten Dame” findet wieder einmal eine Verfilmung eines Theaterstücks von Friedrich Dürrenmatt den Weg auf die Leinwand. Vielleicht wird der ein oder andere nun die Hände über dem Kopf zusammen schlagen, wurden doch sicher viele Leser mit den Werken Dürrenmatts im Deutschunterricht gequält, doch keine Angst “Der Besuch der alten Dame” ist keine trockene Theaterkost mit der man arme Schüler quält, sondern ein wirkliches filmisches TV-Highlight. Sobald Claire vor dem gesamten Dorf ihre Bedingung kundgetan hat, beginnt der Film seine gesamte Faszination zu entfalten und entpuppt sich als äußert spannende Charakterstudie.

Bei einem Blick auf den Inhalt könnte man nun vielleicht meinen, dass “Der Besuch der alten Dame” etwas reißerisch daherkommt, doch bis auf eine Jagdsequenz…

Personally I prefer more fast paced movies including some action. This movie is rather slow paced and doesn’t contain that much action, so it doesn’t really fit into my preferred range of films.

Richard Jenkins is an actor who can move his head half an inch and provide the turning point of a film. That happens in "The Visitor," where he plays a man around 60 who has essentially shut down all of his emotions. A professor, he has been teaching the same class for years and cares nothing about it. He coldly rejects a student's late paper without even enquiring about the "personal problems" that made it late. He makes an elderly piano teacher figure out for herself why she will not be needed again. His lips form a straight line that neither smiles nor frown.

He is forced to travel from his Connecticut campus to New York, to present an academic paper he co-authored. At least he is honest. Protesting the assignment, he tells a colleague he agreed to put his name on the paper as a favor, has not read it, is not competent to present it. He has to go anyway.

He keeps an apartment in Manhattan. Lets himself in. The naked African girl in his bathtub screams. Her boyfriend appears from somewhere. The interlopers are ready to call the police when he explains it is his apartment. They'd been renting it from a crafty opportunist. These "roomers" are Tarek ( Haaz Sleiman ), from Syria, and his girlfriend Zainab ( Danai Gurira ), from Senegal. They immediately pack to leave. He sees them out, then appears at the top of the stairs to tell them they can stay the night. During the film, he will change his mind and appear at the stair-top three times, each time crucial.

Tarek is a virtuoso on an African drum. Walter's late wife was a famous pianist. He loves music, but has failed at learning the piano. One day Walter is walking through Washington Square Park and hears two young black boys drumming on the bottoms of plastic buckets. He stops to listen. After awhile his head begins to move side to side, half an inch at a time, in response to the rhythm. There you are.

Of course the film, written and directed by Tom McCarthy , is about a great deal more -- about illegal U.S. residents and stupid bureaucrats and drums and love and loss. A fourth major character appears, Mouna ( Hiam Abbass ), who is Tarek's mother and lives in Michigan. She hopes to help her son after he is arrested in an innocent subway incident and threatened with deportation. Walter has already hired a lawyer. He's no bleeding heart, makes no speeches, barely displays emotion, but now for the first time since his wife died, he is feeling things deeply.

This is a wonderful film, sad, angry, and without a comforting little happy ending. But I must not describe what happens, because the whole point of serious fiction is to show people changing, and how they change in "The Visitor" is the film's beauty. So much goes unsaid, and unseen. Events in Walter's professorial job happen off-screen. We are left to listen to the silences and observe the spaces.

All four actors are charismatic, in quite different ways. Hiam Abbass is one of those actresses who respects small gestures; she knows that when a good cook is using an unfamiliar salt-shaker, she shakes the salt first into her hand, and then throws it into the pot. And she has other small gestures here that are much more fraught with meaning. Haaz Sleiman and Danai Gurira, as a musician and a jewelry-maker, are young, in love and simply nice people. The less complicated they are, the better the characters work. And as Walter, Jenkins creates a surprisingly touching, very quiet, character study. Not all actors have to call out to us. The better ones make us call out to them.

The Visit is a return to form for Shyamalan.

While Shyamalan doesn’t reinvent the wheel with “The Visit”, he does show the creative flourishes that made him a respected name and overnight success in the horror-thriller genre.

It’s all a very transparent metaphor for family reconciliation and what happens when your old wounds don’t heal.

This would be a perfect movie to kind of study because it's written really, really well and the scripting and dialogue and just the overall story structure is perfect.

M. Night Shyamalan needed people to be on his side. Thankfully, with The Visit, a found footage horror movie with more than its share of humor, he finally got me back on his side.

Shyamalan's made a lot of terrible films in a career singularly set with The Sixth Sense, but makes a decent rebound here.

The Visit is one freaky found footage frightfest.

The fear of 'The visit' is something very real, it is fear of abandonment, of not being loved. A fear far superior, by its authenticity, to any created fiction. [Full Review in Spanish]

Missouri to execute man who murdered his cousin and her husband, governor says

A man convicted of murdering his cousin and her husband after they brought him to safety when he told them that drug dealers were at his door will be executed Tuesday, Missouri's governor said.

Brian Dorsey, 51, requested clemency, but Gov. Mike Parson affirmed the state Supreme Court-ordered sanction Monday, with his office saying in a statement that it is "an appropriate and legal sentence for his heinous crimes."

On Dec. 23, 2006, Dorsey grabbed his cousin's shotgun and fatally shot her and her husband in their Callaway County residence. Sarah Bonnie and Ben Bonnie drove him to the home for the night after he asked for her help, saying drug dealers were at his door demanding he cover debts, according to the case record.

The couple's 4-year-old daughter was in the home, but she was not physically harmed, the record states.

“Brian Dorsey punished his loving family for helping him in a time of need,” Parson said in the statement Monday.

He continued: “The pain Dorsey brought to others can never be rectified, but carrying out Dorsey’s sentence according to Missouri law and the Court’s order will deliver justice and provide closure.”

Dorsey pleaded guilty to two counts of first-degree murder, and a jury took up the matter of sentencing in 2008.

He later argued that the state's flat fee payment to his otherwise private lawyers resulted in an insufficient defense. His defense also included the assertion that he was experiencing drug-induced psychosis the night of the slayings.

A clinical psychologist for the defense recited a history for Dorsey that included mental health issues, suicide attempts and drug addiction, according to the Missouri Supreme Court's affirmation of his sentence in March.

But that jury weighing his fate found seven aggravating factors that led it to endorse execution for Dorsey, according to the Supreme Court.Dorsey challenged his government-ordered fate multiple times, including by filing two writ of habeas corpus challenges with the Missouri Supreme Court, which has denied all his appeals. He also mounted challenges in federal court, but the U.S. Supreme Court declined to hear them.

In December, the state Supreme Court set an execution date of April 9. The state is expected to use lethal injection .

Dorsey's plight found unusual support in January, when dozens of Missouri Corrections Department employees urged Parson to grant clemency to Dorsey, who has behind bars for 17 years.

Troy Steele, the former warden at Potosi Correctional Center, where Dorsey has been housed, described him in a review as a "model inmate" and said he was allowed to work as a barber — even cutting the warden's own hair.

The officers were joined by some family members, including cousin Jenni Gerhauser, in opposing his execution.

“Generally, we believe in the use of capital punishment," corrections officers said in a letter to the governor. "But we are in agreement that the death penalty is not the appropriate punishment for Brian Dorsey.”

The Missouri Corrections Officers Association and the American Civil Liberties Union of Missouri did not immediately respond to requests for comment.

Execution is scheduled for 6 p.m. local time Tuesday, according to NBC affiliate KOMU of Columbia .
