If you made your booking through a Qantas office, and it is eligible, you can pay for your booking online at Manage Booking .   If you made your booking through a travel agent, you can’t pay for your booking online. However you can view your booking, add your Frequent Flyer number and check in online through Manage Booking .

Analysis: How Flight Upgrades Have Evolved Over The Years

• Airlines are much less likely to upgrade passengers for free in today's aviation industry.
• Airlines maximize profits by overselling flights and upgrading loyalty members.
• Criteria for upgrades include frequent flier status, fare paid, and check-in sequence.

In a bygone era, passengers would wear dress well, be on their best behavior, and be courteous to the agent at the check-in counter in hopes of an upgrade. If lucky, you’d get bumped up to business/first class if the seats weren’t full. There were many ways passengers would try to “game the system” to get a free upgrade, and while none of them were guaranteed, these methods worked.

Today, the only way you’re getting a guaranteed upgrade is if you pay for one .

Why do airlines upgrade?

Airlines routinely upgraded passengers from the economy cabin to business or first class. The reason was that airlines would oversell or overbook flights if there were last-minute cancellations or no-shows. Cancellations outside the refund period and no-shows aren’t eligible for money back. The airline maximizes profits by overbooking to fill these potentially vacant seats.

As per the Independent, Rob Burgess, the founder and editor of Head of Points, shares that the policy of filling premium cabins differs depending on the country and airline. Generally, US carriers tend to focus on filling the premium cabins first. If leftover seats exist, the highest-ranking loyalty members are upgraded to those seats, which results in happier passengers and more business.

Carriers in Europe prefer to fill economy first, leaving business class at less than 100% capacity if possible. This creates a nicer, more premium environment, meaning passengers who paid for business class get quicker service and a better overall experience. As a result, frequent fliers in these countries are often asked to pay for their upgrades (with cash or points).

They also push for upgrades. In the days before the flight, carriers will email passengers asking if they want to upgrade to fill up their premium cabins. Every person who does so increases the airline's bottom line ever so slightly, allowing it to resell the economy ticket at an increased last-minute fare price.

How To Upgrade On Your Next Qantas Flight

Why did it change.

The advent of advanced computerized ticketing systems has played the biggest role in reducing on-the-spot upgrades. In the early days of these systems, there was no cohesiveness. Airlines would book tickets, and so would third-party travel agents. The multiple booking avenues meant airlines couldn’t accurately control or predict how many they oversold.

Today, artificial intelligence and better analytics have created more accurate prediction models. This means that airlines are overbooking by just enough to prevent the need for upgrades from economy to more premium cabins.

In addition, airlines are not much more profit-oriented than they were in the past. Service used to be front and center. But now cash is king, and airlines exploit every avenue possible to make more money.

What are the criteria for getting upgraded?

If you go to the airport expecting to get upgraded, you’ll likely be disappointed, especially when flying airlines that mostly require passengers to pay for upgrades.

However, if you’re airline is known for upgrading passengers, then these are the criteria they consider , in order of importance:

• Frequent flier status: Passengers who are frequent fliers are the first in line to get upgraded as they are more likely to give the airline more business when they have a positive experience. The higher the status (Platinum before Gold, etc.), the more likely you will get upgraded.
• Type of fare paid: The airline will look to upgrade the passengers who paid the full fare first instead of customers who paid a discount fare. Or passengers who paid for extra legroom might get bumped up versus a normal economy seat.
• Sequence number: Lastly, airlines will look to fill the seats as soon as possible to begin organizing their standby passengers. As a result, passengers who check in are prioritized for an upgrade over those who check in later.

Tips for securing a flight upgrade.

While it's unlikely that you’ll get upgraded just by showing up at the check-in desk, there are some things you can do to make yourself a better candidate for an upgrade .

• Join frequent-flier programs: As mentioned earlier, if an airline deems you a valuable customer, they are more likely to upgrade you. It tracks your flights and profitability through frequent flier programs. In addition, youre more likely to get better deals for paid upgrades because you can use the points you accumulate, essentially making it a free upgrade. Try to join airline-specific loyalty programs instead of Star Alliance or oneworld loyalty programs. Better yet, join both to increase your chances.
• Refrain from special requests: The more an airline has to go out of its way to accommodate you, the more likely youll get an upgrade. For example, if you request a special meal, theyll have to make the same changes for the meal you receive in the premium cabin. The extra hassle isnt worth it, and it would cost extra to do so.
• Pick busier routes and be flexible: Busier routes tend to be overbooked more often, and if you volunteer to wait for a later flight, you might be offered an upgrade to the premium cabin as a gesture of appreciation.
• Pick more quiet routes: The opposite also works. If you pick a route that is not often full, you have a higher chance of being upgraded, especially if youre a loyal customer.
• Try your luck: While it's highly unlikely, ask the agent at the check-in counter if you are eligible for an upgrade. You never know if youll get lucky.
