Australia Visa for Tourists in 2024: A Comprehensive Guide

Updated: February 23, 2024

Australia Visa

Australia has a complex visa policy, but thankfully visiting Australia as a tourist is quite easy. Australia does not offer visa exemption, so all visitors must obtain a tourist visa. All Australia visa applications are done entirely online.

Quick summary:

  • There is no VISA-FREE access to Australia, everyone must hold either an ETA, eVisitor or Visitor visa
  • ETA is available to 33 nationalities, costs 20 AUD, approved immediately
  • eVisitor visa is available to 36 nationalities, free of cost and approved within a day
  • Visitor visa is available to all nationalities, costs 190 AUD, processing takes 1-3 weeks

In this article, I will summarize visa requirements, eligibility, and procedure for the four main ways to visit Australia as a tourist: the ETA, eVisitor, tourist visa, and transit visa.

Table of Contents

Australia visa requirements.

Australia Visa Requirements by Nationality

Passport validity required

Your passport must be valid for the entire duration of your stay to enter Australia as a tourist.

Entry requirements

All tourists coming to Australia must meet the following conditions:

  • Must be free from any disease or condition that may be a burden to Australia’s healthcare system, such as tuberculosis.
  • Must be a genuine visitor and obey the rules and conditions set by the visa.
  • Must have a good character and not have a substantial criminal record.
  • Must have enough money to finance your stay in Australia.

Visa Policy and Visa Types

Australia does not offer VISA-FREE access to any nationality. You would either need an ETA or a visa. The main tourist visas are summarized in the following table:

According to the Trans-Tasman Travel Agreement, citizens of New Zealand receive a free Special Category Visa (subclass 444) on arrival at any Australian port of entry . This allows them to live and work in Australia indefinitely.

All Australian visas are electronic visas. Visa information is linked to the passport number and verifiable online.

ETA (Electronic Travel Authority, Subclass 601)

Australia ETA Sample

Australia ETA is available to nationals of 33 countries and territories listed below. In most cases, the ETA is approved immediately. For that reason, ETA is often considered a visa exemption or visa waiver.

  • Liechtenstein
  • Netherlands
  • South Korea
  • Switzerland
  • United Kingdom
  • United States of America
  • Vatican City

The ETA application is entirely online and can only be applied using the Australian ETA mobile phone app. The app is available as a free download.

There is no charge to apply for ETA, but using the app itself costs a service charge of 20 AUD.

For more information, read the complete guide to Australia Electronic Travel Authority (ETA) for details on eligibility, required documents, the ETA app and the application process.

eVisitor Visa (Subclass 651)

Australia eVisitor Visa Sample

The eVisitor visa is available to nationals of 36 countries exclusively in Europe.

The main difference between the eVisitor visa and the ETA is that the eVisitor requires more documents to be submitted, such as a bank statement as proof of sufficient funds.

Most eVisitor visa applications are processed within a day. There is no fee to apply for an eVisitor visa.

The success rate of the eVisitor visa is 98.5%, even higher than the ETA’s success rate of 97%. This means that if you’re eligible for both the ETA and the eVisitor, you can save 20 AUD by applying for the eVisitor as they are identical in all other aspects.

For more information, read the complete guide to Australia eVisitor Visa for details on eligibility, required documents, the application process and our personal experience.

Visitor Visa (Tourist Stream, Subclass 600)

Australia Visitor Visa (Subclass 600, Tourist Stream) Sample

The subclass 600 is Australia’s main tourist visa. It has several streams depending on the purpose such as tourism or business and whether you are applying from outside or within Australia.

For this guide, we will focus on the visitor visa for tourism that can only be applied from outside Australia.

Eligibility, validity and duration of stay

Visitor visas for tourism are available to all nationalities.

Australia issues only eVisas. Therefore, the tourist visa is also an eVisa. The visa will be electronically linked to your passport. You can carry a print of the eVisa with you when you travel.

Visitors visas are either single or multiple-entry valid for up to 3 years. On each visit, you are allowed to stay up to 3 months.

Application process and documentation

Applications for tourist visas can be made online through the ImmiAccount portal.

The documents required for a tourist visa include any of the below. The actual documents required depends on a case-by-case basis.

  • Proof of sufficient funds, such as bank statements, pay slips, tax returns, etc.
  • Proof of reasons to return home, such as employment letter, property ownership, family dependency, etc.
  • Proof of travel history such as previous visas and entry/exit stamps of the countries you have traveled to.

50% of applications get processed within a week and 90% of all applications get processed within 21 days.

The fee for the tourist visa is 190 AUD.

For more information, read the complete guide to Australia Visitor Visa for details on required documents, biometric appointment, application process and our personal experience.

Benefits of an Australian visa

Australian tourist visa not only grants you access to Australia but also to many other countries. As of 2024, you can travel to 16 countries with an Australian visa. Read this article on VISA-FREE countries for Australian visa to learn how to visit these 16 countries.

Transit Visa (Subclass 771)

Australia Transit Visa (Subclass 771) Sample

Eligible nationalities can transit without a visa (TWOV) through Australian airports. For TWOV, you must meet the following conditions:

  • Stay airside and not clear immigration
  • Have your onward flight within 8 hours of arriving in Australia
  • Hold a passport from the following eligible countries

TWOV eligible countries

  • Marshall Islands
  • New Zealand
  • Papua New Guinea
  • Philippines
  • Solomon Islands
  • South Africa
  • United Arab Emirates

Transit visa requirements

If you already hold an ETA, eVistor or Visitor visa, then you do not need a transit visa. Rest must obtain a transit visa (subclass 771). The transit visa allows entry into Australia for short stays of up to 72 hours.

To apply for a transit visa, you must have a confirmed onward ticket to another country within 72 hours of arrival and the required visas for it. In addition to those, you may also require proof of adequate health insurance.

For more information, read the complete guide to Australia Transit Visa for details on the application process, required documents, fees and transit procedure at the airport.

Visa Extension

Extensions are not allowed for any of the Australian tourist visas. You are allowed to apply for another visa while you are in Australia, such as the Visitor Visa (Onshore stream).

Certain conditions attached to your current visa may prevent you from applying for another visa while in Australia. The most notable one is Condition 8503: No further stay.

When applying for a new visa from within the country, a Bridging Visa is automatically applied for you. A Bridging Visa will keep your stay lawful while waiting for your new visa to be approved.

As a tourist, you will receive a Bridging Visa A (BVA) while you are waiting for your new visa. BVA expires if you leave Australia.

For more information, read the article on Australia Visa Extension for details on rules, conditions and procedures to extend your stay in Australia.

Entry and Exit Procedures

Australia has one of the most streamlined entry procedures in the world. Passports are not stamped on entry or exit.

If eligible to use SmartGates, you can process your entry and exit without even speaking to a border official.

SmartGates eligibility

To use SmartGates at Australian airports, your passport must be an ePassport from one of the following countries.

You must check your eligibility to use SmartGates at the kiosks just before the gates. If eligible, you will be given a ticket. Then you must proceed to the SmartGates and follow the procedure.

If not eligible, you will be directed to a border officer.

Other passports

All other passport holders must proceed to an immigration officer box. Answer any questions about your stay and intentions.

Your passport will not be stamped. But if you need evidence of entry, you can request a stamp.

Incoming Passenger Card (IPC)

All arriving passengers must complete and present a paper arrival card called Incoming Passenger Card (IPC). You will be given one on your flight to Australia.

Pay attention to the items you must declare. Australia has stringent biosecurity protocols and failure to declare even harmless items, may lead to fines and severe penalties.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

Can i stay in australia for 6 months as a tourist.

The eVisitor, ETA, and most Tourist Visas allow stays of up to 90 days at a time. You need to explicitly apply for a 6-month Tourist Visa to stay in Australia that long.

How many times can you enter Australia on a tourist visa?

The eVisitor and the ETA allow unlimited entries into Australia. Regular tourist visas can be either one or multiple entries.

How much bank balance is required for an Australia tourist visa?

Australian Immigration does not specify a minimum and it will depend on the length of your trip. A good rule of thumb is to have at least 4000 AUD per month of intended stay.

How long do you have to leave Australia for before returning?

There is no minimum time outside of Australia required. As long as you have a valid visa, you can go back whenever you want.

Migration Expert Preeti Kaur in her words....

According to Preeti Kaur, a migration expert from Melbourne, there has been a remarkable increase in tourist visa applications in the last few months, especially from India.

'I have been entering around 15-16 applicants per month for visitor visas from India since December 2021'. Tourist visas are permitted nowadays for a maximum of 2-3 months. And the application submission and complete documentation are made more accessible and quicker.

When accurate and correct information-related documentation is provided, one can expect fast visa approval. Notably, the proof of funds to be spent during the holiday must be provided.

Gold Coast Migration Agent, Seema Chauhan...

Majority of the clients who approached me for the visas have got approval in a few weeks except one due to medical clearance. Applications get rejected only when there is not enough supporting documentation submitted .

Australia Hikes Requirement For Student Visa. Should Indians Worry? All You Need To Know

Australia has changed its rules for students who want to study there, which could affect indian students. the students now must show they have at least aud29,710 ($19,576) in savings to get a visa..

Dreams of studying in Australia may now seem further out of reach for many Indian students as the country tightens its visa rules. The Australian government, under Prime Minister Anthony Albanese’s government, has announced an increase in the proof of savings needed for international students to qualify for a student visa. Marking the second hike in seven months, this change mandates students to demonstrate savings of at least AUD29,710 ($19,576).

Before, students needed AUD24,505 ($16,146) in savings, so the recent hike represents a substantial increase of $3,430. It is to be noted that $1 is equal to 1.5177 Australian dollars.

This move comes amidst a surge in migration and concerns regarding fraudulent practices in student recruitment. It is to be noted that the Albanese government has introduced various measures to tighten student visa procedures, including the IELTS score requirement.

This latest amendment in the proof of savings prerequisite follows a previous increase in October, from AUD21,041 to AUD24,505.

Australia’s stringent approach towards student visas, aimed at reducing the annual immigration by half, has particularly impacted Indian students. Allegations of targetted visa rejections for Indian applicants have raised concerns, with a former Australian diplomat to India warning of potential repercussions on bilateral relations.

Major Decline In Indian Student Visas

Despite being the second-largest source of international student enrollments in Australia, Indian student visas witnessed a notable decline of 48% between December 2022 and December 2023, according to reports.

Nevertheless, India remains a significant contributor, with approximately 1.22 lakh Indian students enrolled in Australian universities during the January- September 2023 period.

Moreover, the government is actively addressing fraudulent practices among education providers. Warning letters have been issued to 34 suspected institutions for engaging in “non-genuine or exploitative recruitment practices”.

Australian Home Affairs Minister Clare O’Neil stated that such actions aim to eliminate unethical practices and safeguard the integrity of the international education sector.

In a statement, O'Neil said: "Dodgy providers have no place in our international education sector. These actions will help weed out the bottom feeders in the sector that seek to exploit people and trash the sector's reputation".

Australia’s international education sector, a vital export industry contributing AUD$36.4 billion ($24 billion) to the economy in 2022/23, faces challenges due to a surge in migration, primarily driven by international students. The strain on resources, especially rental markets, has prompted the government to reassess migration policies as they anticipate a significant reduction in migrant intake over the next two years.

"We are significantly reducing migration levels - we are in the middle of the biggest drop in migration numbers in Australia's history, outside of war or pandemic," stated the Australian Home Affairs Minister.

Australia hikes saving requirement for student visa, Indians likely to be hit

Australia has hiked the minimum saving requirement needed for a student visa by $3,430 to $19,576, the second increase in seven months. this will be an additional burden for indian students seeking to study in australia and comes amid attempts by canberra to reduce immigration into australia..

Study in Australia: Stricter visa rules from March 23 for foreign students

  • International students will now need to show proof of savings of at least AUD29,710
  • Tougher norms have seen the number of international students dip since 2023
  • Australia is trying to curb immigration, which surged by 60% in 2023

In what could hit Indian students planning to study in Australia, the government of Anthony Albanese has announced another significant change to its visa requirements for international students. The changes include requiring international students to show proof of savings of at least AUD29,710 ($19,576) to qualify for a student visa. This is the second hike in the amount in the last seven months.

The proof of savings requirement has seen a hike of $3,430 from AUD24,505 ($16,146) to AUD29,710 ($19,576).

This comes amid a surge in migration and concerns over fraudulent practices in student recruitment. The government of Prime Minister Anthony Albanese has introduced several measures to make the process of student visas tougher, including a higher IELTS score.

The recent adjustment in the proof of savings requirement follows a hike in October from AUD21,041 to AUD24,505.

Australia's massive crackdown on student visas in its effort to cut annual immigration by half has hit Indian students hard . Amid claims of targeted visa denials to Indian students, a former Australian diplomat to India has expressed concern that such moves could hurt bilateral relations.

DECLINE IN INDIAN STUDENTS VISAS

Visas granted to Indian students fell by 48% between December 2022 and December 2023, according to a report.

India continues to be the second-largest country for international student enrolments in Australia. It said 1.22 lakh Indian students were studying in Australia in the January-September 2023 period.

Additionally, the government is cracking down on education providers suspected of fraudulent recruitment practices.

These new rules are part of a series of changes Australia has made to student visas.

The changes started when a lot of people moved to Australia after Covid-19 restrictions were eased in 2022. This has caused problems with housing, so the government is making it harder to get a student visa.

Home Affairs Minister Clare O'Neil said warning letters have been sent to 34 education providers for "non-genuine or exploitative recruitment practices". They could face serious consequences, including jail time and a ban on recruiting students, if found guilty.

SURGE IN MIGRATION STRAINING RESOURCES

Australia's international education sector, one of its largest export industries, contributed AUD$36.4 billion ($24 billion) to the economy in 2022/23.

However, the surge in migration, primarily driven by international students, has strained resources, particularly rental markets, across the country.

Record migration, mostly driven by international students, has put the government under pressure.

Net immigration rose 60% to a record 548,800 in the year to September 30, 2023.

Tougher norms and an alleged targeted denial of visas to students from particular countries has seen the number of international students dip since 2023.

The government anticipates a significant reduction in migrant intake over the next two years.

"We are significantly reducing migration levels - we are in the middle of the biggest drop in migration numbers in Australia's history, outside of war or pandemic," stated O'Neil.

A Filipino migrant worker at a remittance centre in Hong Kong

Soaring remittances to developing nations overtake foreign direct investment

Report finds money sent home by people who have migrated was $831bn in 2022, 650% up on 2000

Remittances sent home by people who have migrated abroad have outstripped foreign direct investment in developing nations for the first time, a new report has found.

The International Organization for Migration found that international transfers increased 650% from $128bn (£102bn) to $831bn (£662bn) between 2000 and 2022.

“The growth continued despite predictions from many analysts that remittances would decrease substantially because of Covid-19,” IOM said in its World Migration Report 2024 .

Money sent home by those who have emigrated from their home countries has long represented a greater source of revenue than international development aid to low- and middle-income countries.

But the sharp rise in remittances recorded by the World Bank and other data researched by IOM underlines just how significant migration has become for poorer economies.

The report shows that in 2020, India, China, Mexico, the Philippines and Egypt were, in descending order, the top five remittance recipient countries, although India and China were well above the rest, with total inward remittances exceeding $83bn and $59bn, respectively.

The US has consistently been the top remittance-sending country with total outflow of $68bn in 2020, followed by UAE ($43bn), Saudi Arabia ($34.6bn), Switzerland ($28bn), and Germany ($22bn).

In Europe, where migration has been one of the hottest political topics before the EU parliament elections, home affairs ministers have already started working on new migration laws aimed at curbing the flow of irregular migration.

The IOM’s director general, Amy Pope, said the report also highlighted the need to strengthen legal pathways for migrants from poorer nations.

She said research of Cuban, Haitian and Nicaraguan migration to the US showed an “immediate decrease in numbers of irregular migrants” when legal pathways were created, whether through family reunion or a boost in asylum places.

“When people know that there’s a credible way to get to safety or to get a job, that decreases what the smugglers are selling,” she said.

In Europe, the “Greeks, the Portuguese, the Italians, the Spanish, they’re all really thinking about that at this moment, because their populations are ageing”, she said after a meeting with home affairs ministers a week ago.

“The anti-migration sentiment we’re hearing from so many different parts of Europe suggests that Europe needs to stop migration, where the evidence shows that Europe needs migration.

“But because of the politics around it, there is sometimes a reluctance to try to engage in a system to create a way for people to come in safely, to come in with dignity, and, frankly, to come in and get a job.”

The IOM report notes that people from countries with very high levels of human development can travel visa-free to about 85% of all other countries worldwide.

“However, the visa restrictions in place for countries with very low levels of human development indicate that regular migration pathways are problematic for citizens,” the report says.

Ireland visa issues put Mohammad Amir's participation in doubt

  • Danyal Rasool

Mohammad Amir did not travel to Ireland with the rest of the Pakistan side because he did not receive a visa in time. Amir, who is a permanent resident of the United Kingdom, applied for an Ireland visa along with the rest of the Pakistan side, according to a PCB official. But while the rest of the squad received visas before their travel to Dublin on Tuesday, Amir did not and remained in Pakistan.

The PCB are in touch with Cricket Ireland over the issue, with a PCB official telling ESPNcricinfo it was ultimately the host board's responsibility to ensure visas for the travelling squad were facilitated and provided in time. Given the short nature of the tour - Pakistan play three T20Is in the country from May 10 to 14 - it puts Amir's involvement in the series in doubt.

As things stand, there is no word on a timeline around when his visa is expected. One member of the Pakistan management - Mohammad Yousaf - also had his visa approval delayed, but managed to receive it just in time to travel with the rest of the squad. It is not yet clear whether Amir's visa delay has to do with the timing of his application, though the PCB's view is he applied at the same time as the rest of the squad.

Amir has been to Ireland before. He was part of the Pakistan side that went to Malahide to play in Ireland's inaugural Test match in 2018. He retired from internationals in 2020 before reversing that decision earlier this year and played his first international games in four years in the recently concluded home series against New Zealand.

The Pakistan squad is expected to arrive in Dublin early on Wednesday morning, with all three games to be played there. Pakistan then travel to the UK, where they play four T20Is ahead of the World Cup in the USA and the West Indies.

Australian Govt Raises Student Visa Savings Requirement, Indian Students To Be Impacted

Australian government raises student visa savings requirement, impacting Indian students. Changes aim to curb migration surge and combat fraudulent practices

In the wake of record migration, Australia announced on Wednesday that it would raise the amount of savings international students require to obtain a visa and cautioned colleges about fraudulent recruitment practices. This decision will likely impact scores of Indian students who plan to pursue further studies Down Under.

From May 10, international students must show proof of savings of at least A$29,710 to get their visa , the second increase in about seven months. It was raised to A$24,505 from A$21,041 in October. The move comes after a series of policy changes in recent months to tighten the student visa rules as the lifting of Covid-19 restrictions in 2022 triggered a sudden influx of migrants.

Earlier in March, the government increased English language requirements for student visas and took steps to end settings that allowed students to prolong their stay. Australian Home Affairs Minister Clare O’Neil said warning letters had been sent to 34 education providers for “non-genuine or exploitative recruitment practices”.

They could be jailed for up to two years and banned from recruiting students if found guilty, she said. “Dodgy providers have no place in our international education sector. These actions will help weed out the bottom feeders in the sector that seek to exploit people and trash the reputation of the sector,” O’Neil said in a statement. International education is one of Australia’s largest export industries and was worth A$36.4 billion to the economy in 2022/23.

However, record migration, mostly driven by international students, has put the government under pressure with rental prices soaring across the country. Net immigration rose 60% to a record 548,800 in the year to Sept. 30, 2023. The government expects its policies could halve Australia’s migrant intake over the next two years. “We are significantly reducing migration levels – we are in the middle of the biggest drop in migration numbers in Australia’s history, outside of war or pandemic,” O’Neil said.

Australia’s policy shift on student visas, aimed at halving annual immigration, has significantly impacted Indian students. Visa approvals for Indian students plummeted by 48% from December 2022 to December 2023. Despite this, India remains the second-largest source country for international student enrollments. Figures indicate that 122,000 Indian students were reportedly studying in the country between January and September 2023.
