We Can't Get Over Suri Cruise's Incredible Height Transformation

Suri Cruise has been a household name since before she was born. As the daughter of Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes, Suri  inevitably grew up in the public eye. And she has done a lot of growing, seemingly surpassing  Tom in height . But we got to see a lot more of her when she was little, as she became the object of intense interest as part of the media's obsession with her parents' whirlwind relationship. Following Tom and Holmes' messy divorce in 2012, Suri largely retreated from the spotlight. She has her mom to thank for that. "She was so visible at a young age," she told Glamour in 2023. After the interest in Holmes' marriage to Tom dwindled, she attempted to change that. "I really like to protect her," she said. While the interest in Suri was overwhelming, they made the best of the situation. "We don't get nervous about it. You get used to it after so long," Tom said. He believed it was inevitable to expose Suri to the reality of her parents' lives. "We're raising her to — you know... protecting her, but also you don't want her to be sheltered in any way," he said in 2009, according to  RTE .

Tom and Holmes clearly had differing views on parenting. She wanted Suri to have a childhood similar to her own. "I try to do what [my family] did for me for my little one," she previously said on the "Today" show, per  E! News . Tom, on the other hand, didn't seem to mind the attention being paid to his daughter. "It's both very flattering ... and you kind of go, 'It is what it is,'" he said on "The View" in 2009 (via People ).

Suri Cruise was still a tiny tot when her parents divorced

Suri Cruise may have stopped appearing in Annie Leibovitz's photoshoots by the time her parents divorced. Still, the 6-year-old continued to garner paparazzi attention wherever she was out and about with Katie Holmes, as seen above matching with her mom in New York in July 2012. Wearing a pink dress and red ballerina shoes, Suri stood past Holmes' waist, even though she had on heeled boots complementing her choice of pink shirt and skinny jeans.

While Suri was most often photographed next to her mother, she drew even more attention when she was seen with Tom Cruise. At least in the months that followed the split, Tom still spent time with Suri. On July 17, 2012, he flew to New York for his first known visit with Suri after he and Holmes settled their divorce the week before. The following day, Tom famously took Suri for a helicopter ride over the city for a memorable father-daughter time.

But those days were numbered. According to Us Weekly , Tom was last seen publicly with Suri in 2013, when she was 7. The reality away from the paparazzi cameras doesn't seem to be much different. As time went on and TomKat became old news, Katie Holmes seemingly felt more comfortable taking Suri Cruise to high-profile events. In September 2015, Holmes brought the then-9-year-old onto the stage to wave at the crowd before she gave her speech. Suri's brief appearance onstage showed how much she had grown in three years. Holmes barely had to bend her knees to get close to her daughter's face.

Earlier that year, Holmes had also taken Suri to the Nickelodeon Kids' Choice Awards, where mother and daughter had a blast throwing confetti around. A year later, Holmes also took Suri to see the Broadway musical "Finding Neverland" with her grandmother, Kathleen. That December, Holmes even shared a selfie featuring Suri on Instagram to mark her 38th birthday. It looks like Holmes found a happy medium between protecting her daughter's right to a normal(ish) childhood and her life as a public figure.

That's not to say Suri's relationship with Tom Cruise had stopped attracting attention. In June 2016, many were quick to note that Suri spent Father's Day in the company of her mother at Serafina East Hampton, though she didn't seem to mind. "Suri and her friends were playing, and running around the restaurant," a source told Page Six . Tom, for his part, spent Father's Day in Morocco, where he was shooting "The Mummy." Earlier that month marked 1,000 days since Tom had last seen his youngest kid.

At 12, Suri was communicating more with Tom Cruise

By December 2017, 12-year-old Suri Cruise showed she wasn't far from becoming a tall teenager. Suri showed off her height transformation at Z100's iHeartRadio Jingle Ball (as seen above). Even though Holmes, who is said to be 5 feet 9 inches, was still a bit taller, her preteen daughter still reached up to her shoulders. Suri had just turned 12 the previous April, a milestone that was said to have been missed by her father.

Suri reportedly hoped he would attend her party. "Like any little girl, her greatest wish is for her father to be there, and now she's been disappointed again," a source told Star, according to  YourTango . However, Cruise supposedly had wished her a happy birthday. "Suri gets a gift from Tom on her birthday every year and this year was no exception," an insider told Hollywood Life in April 2018.

By then, Tom was said to be trying to mend his relationship with Suri, taking steps to have a more active role in her upbringing. "Tom's been in contact with Suri more and more over the last few months and has made it clear that he wants to be part of her life again," a source told Grazia U.K. (via InTouch ). However, other sources indicated that Suri had made her peace with her father's absence by then. "[She] has to have accepted the fact that she's in a single-parent family," an insider told InTouch .

Suri Cruise is about as tall as Katie Holmes

On a coffee run in New York City in 2024, Suri Cruise looked to be as tall as Katie Holmes. It seems she's recently added another inch or two to her height. In additional  photos  taken in February 2024, it's clear Tom Cruise's relatively short stature didn't bring down the average of his offspring. And by the looks of it, Suri has grown taller than him, who is said to be 5 feet 7 inches.

But the last couple of years didn't compare to the growth she experienced between 2018 and 2021. That's not unusual, though. Girls tend to have a growth spurt around the time they reach puberty, which is between 11 and 12 for most preteens, according to  Medical News Today . By the time of their 15th birthday, girls are expected to have reached their adult height, as seems to have been the case with Suri.

Suri Cruise (born in Santa Monica, Calif., on April 18, 2006) is famous for being the first child of actress Katie Holmes  and actor Tom Cruise . Suri’s name means “red rose” in French and “princess” in Hebrew. Her Dawson’s Creek star mom began dating the action movie heavy hitter in April of 2005. They were engaged just seven weeks after meeting, and Katie who was raised Catholic, began studying Scientology, the church Tom famously belonged to. They “officialized” their marriage in Los Angeles, and tied the knot at Odescalchi Castle in Bracciano, Italy on November 18, 2006. The protective mom was married to Tom for five and a half years, before she filed for divorce on June 29, 2012. It was reported that she feared her husband would abduct Suri, and cited fear of intimidation by the Church of Scientology among her reasons for divorce. The former couple signed a settlement just 10 days later, and Katie was given custody of Suri when she was just five years old. Although she is the only biological daughter of Tom and Katie, she has two adopted siblings from her dad’s first marriage to Nicole Kidman: a sister, Isabella Jane Cruise, and brother, Connor Cruise. Nevertheless, Suri and her father reportedly haven’t spoken in five years, and it’s not known whether she has any contact with her half-siblings.

Suri attended a private elementary school in Calabasas, California before moving to New York City with her mom and attending a private academy in Manhattan. The school, which also has campuses in Brazil and China, is reportedly the most expensive high school in America. Over the years, reports have surfaced that the teenager misses having her dad in her life. Back in 2018, HollywoodLife reported that Suri was “desperate” to see Tom, given that their only interaction involved him sending gifts on her birthday.

Despite her dad’s absence, it seems the mother-daughter duo are thriving in New York City. The famously private mom-of-one has been spotted out-and-about running errands with her mini-me over the years, however she rarely opens up about her daughter in interviews. In a December 2019 interview with Elle UK, Katie said she “matured” after Suri was born. “I was happy to become a mom in my 20s. It’s been nice that our ages fit. How do I put this? Every age that my child has been and my age at that time has been a good match. We kind of grew up together,” she told the outlet.

Katie also revealed she worries about Suri as she grows up. “Doesn’t every parent [worry about that]?” the  Dawson’s Creek  alum asked during her profile. “There is so much bad news and hate and things that don’t make sense. The 14-year-old was spotted out enjoying a day of shopping in the swanky SoHo area of New York City with her 42-year-old mother Katie Holmes on Friday.

To ward off the coronavirus , both Katie and Suri made sure they were protected by wearing matching white disposable facemasks.

NEW YORK CITY, NEW YORK: It’s mom-daughter day out for Katie and Suri. March 29 saw Katie Holmes out and about in New York City with her daughter Suri Cruise , continuing her winning streak of casual-chic looks.

The 44-year-old ‘ Dawson's Creek ' actress went for a more environmentally friendly style by reusing a jacket and cap that she had already worn the previous week. She wore a striking puffy jacket in an eye-catching olive hue with a quilted pattern to stay warm in the chilly city.

A casual stroll

As they walked together, Katie and Suri appeared to be having a blast and were beaming from ear to ear. Tom Cruise's 16-year-old daughter, Suri also went with a casual appearance.

For the Catholic institution Fordham in New York, Suri was dressed in a gray hoodie, which she paired with loose-fit trousers and patriotic trainers. She carried a tote bag for the well-known bookstore The Stand and wore her black hair down in a loose way.

Katie maintained the low-key trend with loose gray Alo sweatpants and left her jacket unbuttoned, appearing to be wearing a white t-shirt underneath it. She also donned a large navy blue baseball hat over her long brown hair, which seemed to be wet, and kept herself comfy with a pair of white and beige moccasin-like shoes. A brown purse was the finishing touch to her ensemble.

Catching up with Katie

Katie and her teenage daughter used to watch vintage ‘Dawson's Creek' episodes to connect, she recently admitted to Variety . She said that during the height of the pandemic, the two dug into some of the previous episodes, but she emphasized that she didn't coerce Suri into it.

"She has seen Dawson's Creek and I think it's probably weird since she's a teenager," she explained. "I'm not like, "You need to watch mommy's work." But during the pandemic, we had a good laugh about it." The activity demonstrated how much Suri had matured. Katie's outing with Suri takes place in the midst of a busy period. While getting ready for the premiere of her third directorial, 'Rare Objects', she is also acting in the off-Broadway drama 'The Wanderers'. 

Julia Mayorga, who starred in 'American Rust', plays a young woman in the movie who is recovering from a traumatic event while working in an antique shop in New York. Katie makes an appearance as a troubled socialite who befriends the young woman after they first meet while she is receiving treatment in a mental institution. From April 14, 'Rare Objects' will be available for on-demand streaming and in a limited number of theaters.

On Monday, December 18, the girls were seen out together in Manhattan to celebrate the actress' 45th birthday.

Suri Cruise is the only daughter of Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes.

In photos obtained by a news outlet, the 17-year-old — who allegedly hasn't seen dad Tom Cruise in years — was seen bundled up in a long gray peacoat, which covered up most of her outfit except for her black tights and black flats. She accessorized with an oversized white and maroon scarf.

The Dawson's Creek alum looked stylish in a floor-length black and sheer patterned dress with feathered cuffs, white coat and heeled white boots.

The actress lives with Suri in NYC.

The teen isn't seen out that often, which is just fine with her famous mother.

"What has been really important for me with my daughter , because she was so visible at a young age, is I really like to protect her," the brunette beauty explained in a past interview. "I’m very grateful to be a parent, to be her parent. She’s an incredible person."

While Katie's offspring is reportedly planning to go to college, the TV star admitted she's "always" hopeful that Suri will want to do "something" on her films.

She got her wish in 2022, when Suri's cover of “Blue Moon" was featured in Alone Together , while the following year, Rare Objects included another tune sung by the high school student.

The Coda lead hinted she'd be a bit worried if Suri pursued Hollywood full time, but in these instances, she felt comfortable with the situation.

"Both of those [movie] experiences came out of the same sense of what I love about our industry, which is, you have these projects and you become a family with people," she said. "And it’s this safe, beautiful, creative space. So it comes out of love for me to include someone who I love dearly."

"That's how I like to work. I like to have that kind of feeling ," added Katie. "It was very meaningful to me to have her there, because she's my heart."

It's been reported that Suri and her dad aren't as close as they once were.

Earlier this year, Katie revealed her mini-me has indeed sat down and watched episodes of her breakout TV series Dawson's Creek.

"I think it’s probably weird since she’s a teenager . I’m not like, 'You need to watch mommy’s work.' But during the pandemic, we had a good laugh about it," the mom-of-one said. "It’s wild to have a daughter who’s almost the same age as I was when I began all this."

Since then, Suri has spent her days growing up in the Big Apple. "Yes, it's a little too exposed at times, and we work hard to maneuver and navigate," Holmes told InStyle in 2020. "But what I love about New York is that for me and my child, this is our vibe."

New York City may have been the ideal backdrop for Suri's childhood, but with the strong media presence there, dodging the paparazzi was no easy feat. As a toddler, her footwear caused an uproar

Supposedly, the entrance is accessible from the basement of Holmes' apartment building, and it connects to Whole Foods via a series of underground corridors. Gawker claimed that Holmes and Cruise used the passageways to sneak into the store without being detected by paparazzi. When the pair wanted to do some grocery shopping, all they had to do was wait for an employee to come down and open the door for them. 

In 2015, Gawker allegedly spoke with a municipal engineer who confirmed the existence of the secret Whole Foods entrance. "Based on my review of the plans, there is a door between the cellar-level employee area and the cellar-level corridor of the Mercantile building," the expert revealed (via Page Six ). "Ms. Holmes probably went through this door and never had to step outside."

Suri Cruise is sporty

Suri Cruise may be obsessed with fashion, but shoes and purses aren't all that's on her mind. When she's not brandishing the latest designer labels, she enjoys hitting the tennis court. In 2013, paparazzi spotted Cruise entering a luxury sports club with her mom, Katie Holmes. The youngster clutched a pink tennis racket in her hand as she shuffled into the fitness center. While we don't know how strong her drop shot is, we do know that she is very athletic — and interested in multiple sports. As the Daily Mail noted, Cruise is an accomplished ballet dancer, and she's been perfecting her pirouette since she was a toddler. "She is in the program for the Lower School, which focuses on Chinese, and this is a great foundation for her."

Of course, knowing a second language could be massively beneficial for Cruise's future. It may one day come in handy for her prospective career — plus, she'll be able to bond with other Mandarin speakers around the world. It's possible that Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes considered these perks when choosing to send their daughter to Avenues the World.

As you might have guessed, her education wasn't cheap. According to the school's website , tuition costs a pretty penny: $68,850 a year, to be exact.

Suri Cruise is estranged from Tom Cruise

According to former Scientology spokesperson Mike Rinder, Suri wants nothing to do with the religion. "Suri is not a Scientologist and never will be," Rinder told Page Six. "She deserves love and sympathy."

She's passionate about humanitarian work

Suri Cruise may be estranged from her father, Tom Cruise, but she does have at least one positive role model: her mother, Katie Holmes. I went to the Moria refugee camp in Greece and it was eye-opening to see that a camp that was originally built for about 3,000 now has about 8,000." She added, "And I think that it's important to remember that it is our responsibility to do as much as we can to help people out, whether it's like going to a soup kitchen or just doing what you can to help people in need." Judging by their charity work, it's clear that Suri shares her mother's philosophy on helping others. 

She's musically gifted

With parents like Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes, it's hardly a stretch to assume that Suri Cruise is interested in the arts. But unlike her movie star folks, Suri has gravitated toward music — and singing is her forte. In 2022, she debuted her gorgeous singing voice on the soundtrack for Holmes' film "Alone Together." Suri performed a rich, jazzy version of the 1934 hit "Blue Moon." Fans applauded Suri's vocal skills, noting that the celebrity kid had genuine talent.

In 2023, Katie Holmes released "Rare Objects," a film which the A-lister co-wrote, directed, produced, and starred in. Once again, Holmes wanted to share the moment with Suri, so she recruited the teen to sing on the soundtrack for "Rare Objects." Holmes added another sweet touch by ending the film with a dedication to her beloved daughter.  While chatting with Yahoo Entertainment  in 2022, the superstar proudly opened up about working with Suri. "I always want the highest level of talent," she shared. "So I asked her! She's very, very talented." Holmes also revealed that she gave Suri total creative control while recording the song. "She said she would do it and she recorded it, and I let her do her thing," Holmes proclaimed. "That's the way I direct in general: It's like, 'This is what I think we all want — go do your thing.'"

Suri Cruise may have a future in show business

For years, fans have kept their eyes peeled for signs that Suri Cruise is preparing to take on Hollywood . Speaking with Glamour in 2023, Katie Holmes revealed that if Cruise ever wanted to pursue an acting career, she would happily open that door for her. "Yes. I hope she always does something on my films," the actor said. "I always ask her." Holmes added, "That's how I like to work. I like to have that kind of feeling."

In 2024, Cruise starred in her high school's production of "The Addams Family: A New Musical." According to Page Six , the junior superstar played the role of Morticia Addams. The tabloid spoke to an audience member who raved about Suri's performance in the show.

Being that Katie Holmes has served as an actor, writer, director, and producer, she definitely has the connections to help Suri find her stride in Hollywood. For now, though, Suri seems perfectly content with her current claim to fame: being one of the most talked-about celebrity kids of the 21st century. Earlier this month it was announced that Tom's estranged daughter Suri has officially ditched her dad's surname as she adopts a quiet life away from any connection to her Hollywood father. The father-daughter duo have reportedly have had a strained relationship for years with the Mission Impossible star recently missing her 18th birthday party last month while filming in London.

Suri's decision to drop her 'Cruise' surname is thought to be a moment of rebellion, according to a US psychiatrist. In an exclusive interview with The Mirror , expert Carole Lieberman, M.D. explained: "Children ‘drop’ their last name to rebel against their parents. They’re angry and resentful over some hurt from childhood."

She continued: "When they get older, they get back at their parents by ‘dropping’ them as a way to punish their parents for all the painful memories they’ve held onto and obsessed over for years," and added: "These memories could be something as seemingly minor as their parent not coming to all their games in high school, or something major like their father divorcing their mother and going on to have another family."

Tom's estrangement from his daughter Suri comes after Katie was awarded "sole custody" of her in during the famous pair's divorce settlement back in July of 2012. After the settlement, a source later revealed to Heat Magazine that Tom had made a deal to "allow her [Suri] and her mother to live their own lives because that was what Katie wanted."

Now Suri is 18, it's also thought Tom's payments of $400,000 per year to ex wife Katie for child support will now cease. Tom and Suri have had an estranged relationship for many years, with the last photo of the father and daughter together was in 2012 a year after Tom and Katie's divorce was finalised.

Suri Cruise was photographed celebrating her 18th birthday in New York City while her estranged father, Tom Cruise, worked abroad in London.

According to pictures obtained by Page Six, the birthday girl stepped out in the rainy weather with a friend on Thursday. The pals chatted as Suri held a pink umbrella over their heads.

The teen, who is also the daughter of Katie Holmes, wore jeans, a denim jacket over a brown shirt and black shoes. She carried a blue backpack and held what looked like a birthday gift in her hand.

A day before Suri’s big day, her father, Tom, was spotted overseas in London filming a new project.

The “Mission Impossible” star, 61, flashed a wide grin as he arrived at a helipad and piloted a jet.

Tom and his youngest daughter have not had a close relationship over the past years. In fact, a source exclusively told Page Six earlier this month that the movie star has not seen Suri since 2012 (they were last seen together at Disney World that summer).

“Katie has safeguarded Suri and she’s a devoted mom,” the insider told us. “This is a girl who is a private citizen. She hasn’t lived her life in public.”

Holmes, who filed for divorce from Tom when Suri was only 6 years old in June 2012, previously told Glamour that she wanted to keep her daughter out of the public eye “because she was so visible at a young age.”

The 45-year-old also revealed in November 2013 court docs that she filed for divorce from Tom “to protect Suri from Scientology ,” a religion that is often referred to as a cult.

While it is believed that Holmes signed several non-disclosure agreements to prevent her from speaking about her marriage to Tom and the Church of Scientology, Suri will be free to discuss the religion and her father now that she is legally an adult.

Though it’s unclear whether the teen will publicly speak about her father, she won’t be joining Scientology anytime soon.

“Suri is not a Scientologist and never will be … she deserves love and sympathy,” former Scientology spokesperson Mike Rinder told Page Six.
