Cruise port Fredericia

More and more cruise ships point their compasses towards our little historical gem of a port. With a 370 metre quay and a water depth of 12 metres, our old port in the Little Belt can host even the grandest of ships.

We may seem small and unknown in the company of large European capitals, but don't be fooled: there's more than enough to see and do.

Fredericia is a remarkable historical fortress town with a unique history that embodies wars with great victories and defeats as well as royal privileges such as religious freedom, tax exemption and impunity for criminals. The Fredericia Ramparts also happen to be among the best preserved ramparts in northern Europe.

As a cruise guest you can look forward to waking up right in the heart of town. The cruise quay is only a five-minute walk from the Ramparts and the town centre with its cozy shops and restaurants. As a fun and convenient alternative to walking, jump onboard our little cruise trolley-train, which provides a shuttle service between the cruise quay and City Hall Square. A return ticket is only 35 DKK/5 Euro/5 dollars - you buy the tickets on the train, just bring a little cash.

Here in Fredericia, hospitality is key. We are thrilled to welcome visitors from all over the world. Our staff, volunteers and locals greet the ships as they arrive and wave goodbye as they sail off. Whenever we can, we also bring out the big guns in the shape of small cannons to salute the ships, our amazing marching band 6. Juli Garden and various flea markets and events around town. The programme varies, but we always make our best efforts to give you a warm welcome.

Experiences galore

We provide professionally trained guides for all the guided tours, you can book on the ship. Our historical town walks are a great choice if you fancy a relaxing day with exciting history and a cozy, small-town atmosphere.

Nature lovers are in luck: Fredericia is located right in Nature Park Lillebælt - Denmark's largest nature park. If you want to go exploring in our forests and on our beaches, you can rent cars and bicycles right on the cruise quay. Local city buses can also take you out into the nature, and you can find great trails for hiking. Check out our Nature Park Lillebælt site  for more inspiration for an outdoor adventure.

Fredericia is situated right in the heart of Denmark. A convenient stop on many cruise itineraries and the perfect hub for experiences of all kinds. Within an hour from our port, you can reach a wealth of attractions like LEGOLAND®, LEGO® House, Egeskov Castle, Denmark’s oldest town Ribe, H. C. Andersen’s House in Odense, Koldinghus Castle and the three UNESCO attractions the Royal Jelling, the Wadden Sea and the Moravian Brethren town Christiansfeld.

It is highly recommended that visitors go for a walk along the city walls & the sandy beaches. Much of the main shopping areas in the city centre are fully pedestrianised streets.

View from the top deck of the Celebrity Cruise looking down on Fredericia DK

The story goes that this little town was established in 1650 by Danish King Fredrick III as a new capital city for Denmark, but it never became so. The Fredericia Denmark cruise port is located on the eastern part of the Jutland peninsula and you will likely land here for a day trip after visiting the metropolitan city of Copenhagen (read blog post) . The town likely relies on tourist traffic to their little town and, like on our occasion, will likely greet you with festive folk music as you de-board the ship. It was in fact very charming. I also suspect that the pop up street vendors set up shop for the special occasion as well, and the prices and busy square will show for it, but its worth a stroll. Believe me you’ll have the time to spare.

A Charming Fortress

Travel Tip >> Skip the cruise’s shore excursion, unless you want to venture outside of the city, just take the map and enjoy walking around on your own. You’ll find everything you need to see and have enough time to do so.

Fredericia Vold Moat Waters

If you’re not prepared for what to expect in this port then you will likely be extremely underwhelmed. My travel tip is not intended to be negative it’s just to help you understand that this town gives you more of a small town feel and breather from the big city ports that ships tend to land in and you don’t need to rush. A few friends of ours attested to this after spending the money on the brightly colored sticker and celebrity paddle sign and proved it to be true. The town and its people have their own special charm that is worth checking out as long as you’re there for six to eight hours. Unless of course you want to venture outside the city to destinations like Egeskov Castle , Denmark’s Oldest Town of Ribe , Viking Age Monuments , or Fairytale Island, all of which seem to be great options.

White Water Tower Fredericia DK

Before the city was named by King Frederick III, King Christian IV built a large fortified encampment that gave the town the military identity and history we know today. The old walls are easy to walk to and the green park space around them offers a relaxing and peaceful light walk. I loved walking along the waters of the moat surrounding the fortress, even on a cloudy day the scene was charming and had its own unique feeling that mixed strength and romace. There are some stairs to climb to get back to the top of the fortress but it’s worth the view. You’ll find old military cannons scattered around the hills and the path will lead straight to the White Water Tower that is shaped like a single round castle. All the guides recommend climbing to the top, though I believe we didn’t because there was a small fee and the view was decent enough from the hilltop where we stood. It’s small but cool to see.

Fredericia Fun Fact

Danish teens, or at least those in Fredericia, apparently get drunk and dress up in costumes to celebrate the end of classes. I should have gone to high school in this town…

Partying with the Danish youth

I must pause at this point in the short guide to Fredericia to explain what the hell is going on if you are traveling to the city during mid-to-late May, or anytime near the end of a school term, in this town. When we got to the White Water Tower it was difficult to not be distracted by the crowds of fumbling teenagers getting completely wasted in the middle of the park while wearing costumes ranging from a cow, complete with milking nipples, to wizards and witches, and everything in between. Our first guess was that maybe here they celebrate Halloween in May but nope! After straight up asking a large chicken walking upright down the street, we learned that apparently this tradition happens during a school’s finals week, and it doesn’t particularly matter if you still have a test to take or not, the festivities must go on! We had the wrong lens on to capture the scene in detail, or maybe my husband fully intended to focus on his new wife instead, whatever the case may be, you can get a fuzzy idea of the scene in the picture to the left.

Landsoldaten “The Foot Soldier” Statue

Other Historic Sites in Fredericia

Travel Tip >> Keep your eyes open and you’ll find little things along the way to appreciate, like the Jewish Cemetery that can be seen as you walk down the hill from the White Water Tower. Here are a few other gems my feet found their way to.

As you walk down the hill from the White Water Tower you’ll run straight into the famed Landsoldaten, or “The Foot Soldier,” statue of Fredericia. It stands homage to the military heritage of the town, and the Battle of Fredericia, which is commemorated with a full festival held annually on July 6th. I vaguely remember it being relatively similar in purpose to The Tomb of the Unknown Solider in Arlington National Cemetery for the United States. A few short steps from there, through the trees, you’ll find the Jewish Cemetery located on the street corner that you can look down into from the hillside. I didn’t realize what it was at the time, but even walking past it you can feel its history and importance. It’s the largest of its kind outside of Copenhagen and is located at the corner of Slesvigsgade and Jyllandsgade. And on my way back to the ship I could not help but be drawn to a beautifully tarnished bronze steeple atop a brick church which turns out to be the catholic church of St. Knud, so fitting for my faith. For most it may blend right into the rest of the brick-and-red-roofed architecture but its a pleasant surprise if you appreciate such things.

Fredericia At-a-Glance

Stories aside what are the main attractions when walking around the city?

Here is a list from both my blog post and a few other travel sites to consider when walking around the city:

  • Fredericia Vold  – The park area, with moat waterway, and battle cannons scattered about
  • The White Water Tower – A nice view of the city from atop the fortress
  • Landsoldaten “The Foot Soldier”  – Statue commemorating the Battle of Fredericia celebrated each year on July 6
  • The Jewish Cemetery  – Jewish burial ground with about 500 graves on the corner of Slesvigsgade and Jyllandsgade
  • St. Knud Catholic Church  – Beautifully simple brick building with tall tarnished bronze steeple
  • Madsby Parken  – A park that your kids can play out or just lounge by the water
  • Trinatatis Church   – A beautiful church that holds a piece of Danish history

Cruises from/to Fredericia, Denmark

Fredericia, denmark cruise port.

  • To get a look at the ramparts and cannons that once defended the city, visit Fredericia Vold. With views of the water and the town, there's also a walking path with several fitness stations if you want to test your endurance.
  • Fredericia's major landmark is the statue called Landsoldaten ("The Brave Soldier"), unveiled on July 6, 1858. Landsoldat Square, which houses the statue, is the site of annual celebrations; residents place red and white flowers at the base as a memorial.
  • Originally a German church, Sct. Michaelis Kirke was taken over by Fredericia's residents in 1687. You can hear the small carillon chiming several times a day, and the real attraction is out back: the church's historic cemetery flanked by a beautiful garden.
  • For a break from history and to visit with the animals, visit Madsby Parken. Most of the attractions are geared more toward kids, but there's also a nice picnic area and a place to buy snacks and coffee when you need a rest.

Our unique history.

Fredericia was founded as a royal fortress town in 1650 by King Frederik III. The mighty ramparts surrounding the town centre are still here today complete with cannons, moats and town gates. Fredericia was granted special royal privileges including religious freedom long before the rest of Denmark and most of Europe for that matter.  Later on, Fredericia became a centre of a thriving industrial development due to its strategic position and deep water harbour.

Fredericia, Denmark

Founded as a fortress town in 1650 by Frederick III, the town's namesake, Fredericia is home to one of the most well preserved ramparts in Northern Europe. Nestled in the southeastern part of Denmark's Jutland peninsula, Fredericia charms with a historic core showcasing military remnants and monuments, stately old houses with memorial plaques and quaint shops, and a marketplace. Fredericia prides itself on its history of religious freedom, and in addition to several churches, there is a 17th-century Jewish cemetery, the oldest one in Denmark. Here, you can spend a relaxed day strolling along the beach or biking around town, but if you are feeling adventurous, the port offers easy access to many of the region's top attractions, including the Legoland theme park, a museum dedicated to Denmark's famed children's author Hans Christian Andersen, stately 450-year-old Egeskov Castle, and Ribe Viking Center, an open-air museum that takes you back in time. No matter how you chose to spend the day in warm and welcoming Fredericia, be sure to snap a photo with the Foot Soldier statue. Commemorating the town's military importance, it stands guard at the main entrance to the city.

What you'll do

Welcome by the guide at the port, who will be waiting for you, identified with a SHOREXC sign.

Leaving the pier in Fredericia, we will cross the New Bridge of the Little Belt towards the island of Funen. Here we will drive through Strandvejen to the village of Strib. This location was once a ferry stop on the way from Copenhagen to Jutland and it is now the perfect stop to enjoy a direct view of your cruise ship. Our guide will tell us the history of this picturesque little town while we enjoy the sea breeze and the opportunity to take a few photos of the cruise ship pier in Fredericia.

We will then continue our tour to the old fishing village of Middelfart and the Hindsgavl peninsula with its deer parks and the small castle with the same name. From here, the tour continues back to Jutland, where we will see the landscapes, pass through the villages of Skærbæk and Taulov and visit an old medieval church which was completely renovated in 1999. The interior of the old church now presents a splendid variety of colorful art in a warm and bright setting. The church ornamentation and the 70 paintings are the work made by Arne L. Hansen. The tower used to serve as a navigation guide. The church offers a magnificent view across the Kolding Fjord to Skamlingsbanken.

On our way back to Fredericia, we will pass the Carlsberg Brewery, the fourth largest brewery in the world founded in Denmark. Fredericia has been home to all Carlsberg products production in Denmark since 2008 and the city is proud to be home to the world famous brand.

Once back in the City, we will have the opportunity to visit the walls and tour the small inner town. The perpendicular streets and the number of old houses are a clear testimony to Fredericia's past as a fortified city. We will see the statue of the infantryman, erected in 1858 to commemorate the military privates after the Battle of Fredericia in 1849.

Before returning to the port, we will stop to rest and/or have a coffee and cakes in a local cafe (not included). Then we can return to the dock by bus or take a ride on our own to the ship.
