What people love about wine tasting tours in italy.

Italy Real Food Adventure tour is amazing! I'm happy to travel around the cities in Italy and eat all of the food there!
I traveled last month with my wife. The tour went great. all the arrangements were excellent. Excellent hotels where we stayed in Sicily. Driver very helpful and ready to give us information during the tour. Many culinary experiences and tastings that we enjoyed a lot to get to know the typical Sicilian cuisine. Highly recommended tour combining cultural visits and good food.
Overall our tour was wonderful. We had a great time. Denise, especially was a very good guide, very knowledgable and personable. The cooking class and our Palermo Street Food tour was, probably my favorites. A few areas that could have been improved upon: - A little more communication prior to the tour would have been reassuring. In this day of fraud it is a little unnerving to send all that money into the internet and not get much of a response. - The final communication, our itinerary, was a definite problem. We were told by Tour Radar that we would receive it 10-14 days before we left. The tour operator (ClickTours/Mossimo) told us we would receive it 8 days before we left. I finally called Tour Radar 6 days before we left

The Best Winery Tours in Italy

wine tasting tours italy

KM Zero Tours

There are thousands of wineries in Italy, spread from the top of the boot all the way down to the tip of the toe, and across the islands of Sicily, Sardinia, and the Tuscan Archipelago. The country has more than 20 wine regions, some—like Tuscany, Veneto, and the Piedmonte—more famous than others.

It would take a lifetime to visit them all, but a trip to Italy allows you to visit a few choice wineries. While it would take a lifetime to visit every Italian winery, we recommend sampling the fruits of Italy's hills and valleys via a winery tour. Tours typically allow you to visit two wineries, with all appointments for tours, tastings, and lunch arranged in advance. When you visit on a winery tour, you often get more specialized attention from the winery, potentially including the chance to meet the winemakers. And the best part? You leave the driving to someone else.

We picked out these best winery tours in Italy with an eye on geographic diversity and specialized service. So do as the Italians do, and say " cin-cin! " (pronounced chin-chin) or cheers, to these favorite winery tours.

Amalfi Coast: Swirl the Glass Amalfi Coast Wine Experiences

Swirl the Glass

Hosted by a trained sommelier and veteran of Michelin-starred restaurants, Swirl the Glass Wine Tours all begin in Positano and include an in-depth winery tour, with an explanation of the wine-making process, followed by tastings and then lunch with wine pairings. Some tours allow for time at a second vineyard. If you don't want to commit to a full-day tour, Swirl the Glass can also arrange a pre-dinner wine tasting at a Positano restaurant or at your private villa.

Lazio (Rome): Old Frascati Food & Wine

Old Frascati Food & Wine

If you're staying in Rome and want a nice escape from the city, look to Old Frascati Food & Wine Tours. Their Classic Half-Day Wine Tour departs from the Frascati train station, which is a short, inexpensive ride from Rome Termini. The tour includes a walking visit to historic Frascati, followed by a trip to a nearby vineyard for tastings. The day wraps up with lunch at a traditional osteria in Frascati. Winery tours aren't always kid-friendly, which is why we like Old Frascati's offerings. Even better, they offer some of the most affordable wine tours.

Umbria: Gusto Wine Tours

Gusto Wine Tours

Umbria is famous for its white wines, but in the hills around Montefalco, ruby-red Sagrantino is king. Discover this small wine-growing region with Mark and Giselle, the amiable couple behind Gusto Wine Tours, which specializes in single-day tours. Their Classic Gusto Wine Tour is a fine place to start. The full-day tour includes stops for tours and tastings at three wineries, lunch at a winery or a rustic agriturismo, and often, the chance to meet with vintners. There is a maximum of 8 participants per tour and private tours are available. Pick-up is from an agreed-upon point.

Tuscany: KM Zero Tours

"Zero kilometers" is a buzz phrase of Italy's slow-food movement. It means eating and drinking as locally and consciously as possible. It's also the philosophy of KM Zero Tours, a Tuscan-based tour company run by an engaging couple, Alessio and Arianna. We love their menu of day-trip offerings , which includes a range of experiences, from winery visits to truffle hunts to bread-making lessons—all with a healthy amount of wine in the mix, of course. Pick-up from Florence is included with most tours, as is lunch and the services of a private guide. They offer some interesting multi-day options, too.

Trentino: Pagus Wine Tours

Pagus Wine Tours

If your mantra is rosé all day, you'll love the Lake Garda and its Rosé tour, one of several highly specialized offerings from the experts at Pagus Wine Tours. Rosé tours depart from your Verona hotel and head 30 minutes to Lake Garda, Italy's largest lake. There, a visit to a lakefront town is followed by visits to two wineries and including lunch with wine pairings. Pagus can also arrange bespoke activities, such as a tour in a vintage automobile, a speedboat tour of the lake, or lunch at a Michelin-starred restaurant. They also have a wine shop in the center of Verona.

Tuscany: Grape Tours of Tuscany

Grape Tours of Tuscany

Tuscany is the land of Chianti and Grape Tours of Tuscany's Super Chianti wine tour is a great way to get to know the chianti wine-growing region. The all-inclusive tours start in Florence, and include two winery tours with tastings, and usually include lunch at butcher Dario Cecchini 's celebrated shop in Panzano. You can also select private day tours, which are only for your group of up to 8 participants and can be tailored to different Tuscan wine regions. A guide accompanies you the whole time and offers thoughtful explanations of the terrain and history of the region. They also offer all-inclusive multi-day trips in Tuscany and other regions.

Prosecco (Veneto/Friuli): Visit Prosecco Italy

Visit Prosecco Italy

The grapes used to make Italy's signature sparkling wine grow in the Prosecco Hills, a small area that straddles the regions of Veneto and Friuli-Venezia Giulia. Visit Prosecco Italy's Full-Day Prosecco Tour offers visits to three or four small wineries that produce Prosecco DOCG superior, the highest quality prosecco. They offer the option of a quick or lingering lunch and a tour often includes a visit to a prosecco vending machine. Most tours depart from Treviso but other arrangements are possible. Not that these tours do not include tasting fees at the wineries.

Sicily: Prestelli Sicily Tours

Prestelli Sicily Tours

The wine-growing region on the fertile slopes of Mount Etna is among the best-known in Sicily, and Prestelli's Private Tour of Three Top Etna Wineries will help you take a deep dive into the region. Tours include an abundant antipasto lunch at the first winery, as well as the chance to sample a range of Etna's vintages, including red, white, and rosé wines. Two more stops offer additional tastings and accompanying snacks, plus there's plenty of stunning scenery along the way.

Monferrato (Piedmont): Tasting Tours

Tasting Tours

Prosecco isn't Italy's only sparkling wine or its only sparkling wine region. In the southeast Piedmont, the area centered around Asti and Alba is famous for Asti Spumante, a light, sparkling wine that tends to run on the sweet side, as well as even sweeter Moscato d'Asti, which is lower in alcohol. Discover the beauty of the region and its wines with Tasting Tours' Monferrato Wine Tour , which starts with a visit to a winemaker specializing in hearty red Barbera d’Asti wines and ends on a sweet note, with a tasting of Asti's sparkling wines.

Puglia: Salento Wine Tours

Salento Wine Tours

The Salento peninsula forms the heel of the boot of Italy, in the southern Puglia region. Once known for mass-produced table wines, it's come into its own as a wine-producing area to watch, especially for its white chardonnay and vermintino wines, and red primitivo and negroamaros. Salento Wine Tour's one-day wine tour in Salento will introduce you to the region and its wines, with visits and tastings at three wineries, plus a lunch of typical regional produce. Pick up is in Lecce. For those who can't do a full-day tour, they'll arrange a tasting of local wines and nibbles in a Lecce wine shop.

12 Best Wine Tours and Tastings in Florence

By Erica Firpo

Podere le Ripi Winery overhead Val d'Orcia

A nearly 9,000-square-mile region of rolling verdant hills, salty coastline, and picturesque hilltop hamlets, Tuscany is an incredible play land for the eno-curious. The region's heavy-hitters are many, from Chianti Classico, to Brunello, and Vino Nobile di Montepulciano—and, of course, the famous Super Tuscans. It's filled with landmark wineries and epic winemakers who know it, so they've created incredible experiences and tasting rooms to attract visitors, from fairytale to futuristic, combing natural landscapes with award-winning architects. Whether you've only got time for a light tasting or want to make a day out of a full regional experience, we've got you covered. Exploring this countryside is the tastiest way to truly understand Tuscany, which is why we've picked our favorite wine tours and wine tastings in Florence.

Italy Florence Winery Badia a Cultibuono

Badia a Coltibuono Arrow

Badia a Coltibuono is set in a beautiful landscape of rich greens near Siena. Its charming medieval building, a historic abbey with a romantic atmosphere, looks like the backdrop to a Raffaello painting. Guests reserve their Chianti tasting in advance, so you can be sure that everyone here has done their research—you'll be in good company. The entry-level wine tasting, though well planned, doesn't include snacks. If you're looking for a bite, go for the more advanced tasting, which includes charcuterie and bruschetta.

Default

Cantina Salcheto Arrow

Cantina Salcheto enjoys an enviable and jaw-dropping location—in the beautiful hills of Montepulciano—and manages to toe the line between rustic and futuristic, if that's possible. The 40-acre main vineyard is Tuscany at its best: rolling hills, rich colors, and a state-of-the-art cellar that's impressive in looks and, of course, in inventory—here, you're drinking Rosso di Toscana IGT and Vino Nobile di Montepulciano DOCG. There's no food in the basic tasting, but you can upgrade to the paired tasting or enjoy lunch at Salcheto's onsite enoteca.

Italy Florence Winery Rocca di Frassinello Winery

Rocca di Frassinello Arrow

Rocca di Frassinello is a beautiful and modernist winery designed by Italian architect Renzo Piano. The feat of geometry—whose rich ambers and reds seem to fold into the greens of Grosseto along Tuscany's coastline—is a must-stop for architecture buffs and oenophiles alike. Rocca di Frassinello isn't the kind of place you just happen upon—Maremma, in the south of Tuscany, is rugged cowboy country, so there are no crowds; rather, you'll be tasting cult favorite wines alongside well-researched and well-traveled culture vultures.

Italy Florence Distillery Ornellaia

Ornellaia Arrow

Ornellaia, which produces superb Super Tuscans that most can only dream of tasting, is one of the most exclusive wineries in Tuscany, and it's the perfect place to come with wine-loving friends. The landscape itself is worth the trip, with verdant and beautifully landscaped hills dotted with castle and towers here and there along the coastline between Livorno and Grosseto. Visitors will gain a fully immersive lesson in the world of winemaker Axel Heinz's Super Tuscans and innovative wines, which are favorites among collectors sommeliers the world over.

Italy Florence Winery Castello di Ama

Castello di Ama Arrow

Located in a beautiful medieval hilltop town just north of Siena in Chianti, Castello di Ama feels like an old-fashioned fairytale—one that also happens to be a destination for contemporary art. Lush vineyards produce award-winning wine; gardens are a backdrop to 14 site-specific works and installations by 13 international artists, a combination that attracts wine connoisseurs and art lovers alike. The tour and tasting of Chianti Classico Riserva DOCG also includes bruschetta, though if you're looking for something heartier, the surrounding picturesque village has an enoteca.

Italy Florence Winery Franco Biondi Santi Tenuta Greppo

Biondi Santi Tenuta Greppo Arrow

One of the most popular wineries in the world, Biondi Santi's tours and tastings are superbly rated—for good reason. This is the seat of Brunello di Montalcino, one of the most popular reds coming out of Tuscany around the world. When you book, you're asked a series of questions relating to your knowledge of and interest in wine; from there, you'll be matched with a guide and tour type. Even those with little (or no) knowledge can enjoy the sweeping views and the history of the vineyard, as well as the universally edifying experience of learning about a trade and practice.

Italy Florence Winery Antinori nel Chianti Classico

Antinori Nel Chianti Classico Arrow

Antinori nel Chianti Classico is nothing if not monumental: a striking contemporary sculptural edifice that epitomizes the winery's impact on Italy's history and culture. Antinori is one of the biggest (if not the biggest) producers of wine, and one of the most historic: the label defined, and then redefined, Chianti Classico, upgrading it from a table wine to a prestige one. The architecture, designed by Marco Casamonti, best exemplifies this grandeur. Antinori plays the classics; expect plenty of silky Chianti Classico.

Altesino Arrow

Altesino is a postcard-perfect Italian country villa off a charming dirt road in the Montalcino hills. The late-14th-century Palazzo Altesino sets the stage for an elegant wine. Visits are private; often it's only you, your group, and the winemaker. The focus is Altesino's award-winning wines, from Brunello di Montalcino DOCG to Rosso di Montalcino, and you can also a enjoy a decent snacks pairing. The beautiful location promises to win everyone over, no matter how much they know about wine.

Italy Florence Tours Divine Tours

DiVine Tours Arrow

DiVine Tours offers a series of bespoke wine tours around Tuscany and other select parts of Italy—Umbria, Sicily, Puglia, and Piedmont, among others—all of which are highly personalized and professional. Miriam, DiVine's owner and founder, is a consummate professional who hires top-notch guides and experts. Her tours are very organized and very easy to understand, and you can customize pretty much everything. These tours are excellent for those interested in attaining robust knowledge of area wineries and their history, but they're not for people who don't like wine.

Italy Florence Winery Volpaia

Volpaia Arrow

A walled hamlet on a Chianti hill, Volpaia is the quintessential Tuscan wine fantasy visit. The town itself is charming and the castle drips with Florentine history, having served as a key defensive outpost for the Florentine Republic during its heyday. Volpaia wines are exceptional Chianti Classicos, and that's what you'll learn about on a private tour. The staff is very personable and friendly—but most importantly, they know and love Volpaia, and that enthusiasm is infectious.

Podere le Ripi Winery overhead Val d'Orcia

Podere Le Ripi Arrow

A beautiful Tuscan drive through winding rustic roads ends at Podere le Ripi, a photogenic winery with a modern reception and tasting area. Winemaker Francesco Illy (of the Illy coffee family) is known industry-wide as an innovator; his wines are biodynamic—and he himself is dynamic, too. After a tasting and snack, you'll leave with one key takeaway: that you can at once embrace and buck tradition while still creating great wine.

Italy Florence Winery Fèlsina

Fèlsina Arrow

Felsina's picture-perfect stone entrance comes into view after you've slowly meandered around the hills and valleys of Chianti—and what a sight it is. Here, the mentality is purist; everything you eat comes from the surrounding land. The olive oil is from single cultivars, and the oil-making process strictly adheres to Veronelli's rules of pressing. You can have a simple Chianti wine tasting, a wine tasting with a light lunch, or a wine and olive oil tasting with lunch alongside other wine lovers, culinary travelers, and anyone interested in the hows and whys of wine- and olive-making.

What To Keep in Mind When Choosing a Winery Tour in Tuscany

Tuscany offers quite the mosaic of wine experiences, with each region presenting its signature varietals and winemaking traditions.

Whether you’re drawn to the robust Brunello di Montalcino, the classic Chianti, the noble Vino Nobile di Montepulciano, or the emerging Bolgheri wines, there are several key considerations to keep in mind that can help ensure your wine tour is both memorable and enlightening.

Understanding Regional Wine Profiles

  • Brunello di Montalcino : Esteemed for its full-bodied, bold flavours with notes of dark cherry and leather, originating from the vineyards around the picturesque town of Montalcino.
  • Chianti : Known for its Sangiovese-based wines, offering robust flavours, high acidity, and a tannic nature, embodying the ‘heart’ of Tuscany.
  • Siena and Montepulciano : These areas offer a spectrum of experiences, from the structured elegance of Vino Nobile to more approachable Rosso di Montepulciano wines, characterised by their fruitier and softer profiles.
  • Bolgheri : A newer region on the Tuscan wine map, gaining recognition for its high-quality Bordeaux-style blends, showcasing the versatility of the Tuscan terroir.

Tour Origin Points and Transportation

  • Consider starting your tour from urban centres like Florence or Siena for convenience, especially if you prefer not to drive. Note that tours from Florence to regions like Montalcino require a full-day commitment due to the distance.
  • Most of the tours that start in cities will also include transport; and for pretty much any tour that includes a multiple number of wineries the same can be said.
  • Tours to individual wineries, you will likely need to find your own transport to and from.

Exclusivity and Group Size

  • Tours vary from intimate, small-group settings offering a personalised experience to larger, more social group tours.
  • Brunello tours, for example, cater to a more exclusive market, reflecting the prestige and price point of Brunello wines. You can expect these tours to be either small-group, or private in nature.

Food Pairings and Local Cuisine

  • Many tours incorporate food pairings or meals, highlighting the synergy between Tuscan wines and the region’s rustic cuisine. Look for tours that celebrate this culinary harmony, and knock off two birds with one stone!

Physical Accessibility

  • Assess the physical demands of each tour, especially if mobility is a concern. Some tours involve walking through vineyards or navigating historical cellars.

Customisation and Seasonal Considerations

  • Customisation options can enhance your tour, especially if you have specific wineries or wine types in mind. Also, consider the season of your visit, as the landscape and tour offerings can vary throughout the year.

Practical Tips for Wine Tours

  • Research : Delve into the wineries included on your tour to ensure they match your wine preferences. they’ll often be listed on the tour description.
  • Dress Comfortably : Vineyard tours often involve walking, so comfortable footwear is essential, in my opinion.
  • Stay Hydrated : Remember to drink water between tastings.
  • Check Inclusions : Know what your tour includes, such as meals, transportation, and the number of tastings.
  • Local Regulations : Adhere to local customs and regulations, particularly regarding drinking ages and health and safety measures.

Some Common Questions to Have

Are wine tours in tuscany suitable for beginners.

Absolutely, wine tours in Tuscany cater to everyone, from beginners to connoisseurs – so don’t let this put you off. If you’re new to wine, a tour can be a fantastic introduction. You’ll learn heaps about tasting techniques, grape varieties, and winemaking processes.

Plus, the guides are usually passionate about making wine accessible to all, so don’t be shy to ask any questions you have – no matter how basic they might seem.

Can I join a wine tour without a car?

Yes, you can – in fact wine tours in Tuscany seem to cater very well to this market! Many tours offer pickup services from major cities like Florence and Siena.

For those starting in more remote locations, some companies provide transport options as well. It’s always worth checking the tour details for transportation options, or you could reach out directly to the tour provider to arrange something that works for you.

What should I wear on a wine tour in Tuscany?

Comfort is key! You’ll likely be walking through vineyards and cellars, so wear comfortable shoes suitable for uneven terrain. The weather can be quite variable, too – hot during the day and cooler in the evenings – so layers are your friend. And don’t forget a hat and sunscreen if you’re visiting in the summer!

Is it possible to accommodate dietary restrictions on wine tours?

This typically shouldn’t be a problem. Many tours that include food are more than willing to accommodate different dietary needs. Just make sure to mention your requirements when you book to give them the heads up in advance and to make necessary preparations for you.

Whether you’re vegetarian, vegan, or have specific allergies, they can usually tailor the food to suit your needs. The local cuisine is delicious, and it’s worth experiencing alongside the fantastic wines.

How much wine will I be tasting?

This varies by tour, but generally, you can expect to taste anywhere from 3 to 6 different wines. It’s all about quality over quantity; you’ll be savouring each sip and learning about the characteristics of each wine.

Are children allowed on wine tours?

This depends on the tour operator. Some tours are more family-friendly and can accommodate children with non-alcoholic beverages and even have activities for them. However, others might be more focused on the wine experience and set an age limit for participants. It’s best to check the tour details or contact the provider directly if you’re planning to bring along younger family members.

Can I buy wine directly from the vineyards?

Yes, and the wineries will love you for it – for them, tours are a great showcase of what they have to offer! Visiting the vineyards is a great opportunity to purchase wines directly from the source, often including limited editions or special vintages not widely available elsewhere. Plus, it’s a wonderful way to support the local winemakers.

Many wineries can even arrange shipping for you if you’re worried about luggage space. I’ve been ordering small shipments of Vino Nobile di Montepulciano from a winery I visited many years ago each year at Christmas – it’s great to have that connection into the future.

What’s the best time of year to go on a wine tour in Tuscany?

Tuscany is beautiful year-round, but each season offers a different experience. Spring (April to June) and autumn (September to November) are particularly magical times to visit, with comfortable temperatures and the landscape either blooming or harvest-ready.

Summer can be quite hot but vibrant with tourists and full of life. Winter is quieter, which can be perfect if you’re looking for a more intimate experience, though some wineries may have reduced hours or tours.

Armed with this guide, you’re now ready to explore Tuscany’s premier wine regions.

From the rolling hills of Chianti to the esteemed vineyards of Montalcino and beyond, the perfect wine tour adventure is within reach. Choose wisely, drink responsibly(!!), and immerse yourself in the unparalleled beauty and taste of Tuscany!

Italian wine tours with smoothred.

Any visitor to Italy is almost certain to be wowed and wooed in equal measure by the heady combination of cultural attractions, rural and architectural beauty and of course the vast (and extremely tasty) array of wines and gastronomic delights on offer,

Italy is reputed to have around 2000 varieties of wine grapes. Officially there are 350 varieties that have been given “authorised” status by the country’s Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry (MIPAAF), though there are around 500 other varieties that have been documented.

The grapes are split into Bianco (white) and Rosso (red) and some of the more recognisable grape varieties include:

  • Pinot Grigio (white): commercially very successful, known as Pinot Gris in France, this grape produces crisp, clean wines that can be anything from mild to full-bodied.
  • Trebbiano (white): this variety is planted more widely than any of the other whites in Italy, though it is perhaps best known for the wines from Abruzzo and Lazio such as Frascati.
  • Barbera (red): grown widely in the Piedmont region and also in some regions in Lombardy, wines from these grapes have grown in international popularity in recent years.
  • Montepulciano (red): a grape variety that used to get something of a bad press as a result of some rather poor quality wines produced from it, the smooth-as-silk offerings of late have put such negativity to bed.
  • Nebbiolo (red): the best Barolo and Barbaresco wines are produced from this grape in the Piedmont region, where the autumn fog-hugged vines spawned its name, which means “little fog”.
  • Sangiovese (red): this is the grape behind such Italian classics as Chianti and Rosso di Montalcino and it also plays a significant role in the so-called Super Tuscans for which it is blended with Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Cabernet Franc.

Just as the French authorities attempt to maintain standards of quality with their Appellation d’Origine Protégée system, so Italy has its own system of quality control, the top level of which is the Vini DOP (Wines with Protected Designation of Origin). This in turn is split into two sub-categories, Vini DOC (Controlled Designation of Origin) and Vini DOCG (Controlled and Guaranteed Designation of Origin); wines in the latter category must adhere to stricter protocols and analyses, including special tastings by an appointed committee of wine experts. At the time of writing there are 73 DOCG wines and 332 DOC wines.

The Key Italian Wine Regions

Wine is produced all over Italy so essentially whichever part of the country you visit you will not be too far from a vineyard. Having said that, just as in France or Spain, some regions simply produce better wine. The 73 DOCG wines are split across 15 regions, but there is a concentration in the regions of Piedmont, Veneto, Tuscany and Lombardy. Of course, there are a plethora of exceptional wines produced in other regions too, for example as Puglia and Sicily. Here are some of the highlights from the wine regions in which we offer tours.

Home to some of the best-loved wines and most illustrious vineyards, the Piemonte wines produced in in this north-west corner of Italy include Barolo and Barbaresco, which have become synonymous with top quality Italian wine. Turin is the biggest city in the region and is brimming with museums and galleries. However, it is the breath-taking alpine vistas, mountains and lakes that attract many visitors to this area.

The very mention of Sicily often evokes old mafia movies or images of an erupting Mount Etna. But this historically significant island, the largest in the Mediterranean Sea, has a long and illustrious heritage that spans the Phoenicians, the Greeks, the Romans, the Vandals, the Ostrogoths and the Byzantines, each of which left their marks on the culture, cuisine and wine of the island. Indeed viticulture itself was first introduced to Italy by the Mycenaean Greeks in Sicily and southern Italy around 800 BC.

The Amalfi coast is situated on the Sorrentine Peninsula in the Campania region of Italy and though it more likely to evoke thoughts of luxury yachts and colourful dwellings on steep hillsides than its wines, if the surface is scratched oenophiles will be pleasantly surprised.  The Costa d’Amalfi might have only recently been granted DOC status (in August 1995), but the wines produced in the villages of Furore, Ravello and Tramonti in particular have certainly forced wine lovers to take notice, both within Italy and beyond.

Prosecco is the party drink of choice for many, but the region from which this fine fizz hails has a lot to offer wine-loving visitors. As well as the most famous hillside vineyards of Conegliano and Valdobbiadene, there are the culturally dense gems of Venice, Padua and Verona to explore. Throw in some of the best seafood specialities in Italy and the proximity of popular attractions such as Lake Garda and the Dolomites and a wine tour to the Prosecco-producing region of Veneto will be more than satisfying on many different levels.

For many visitors to Italy, Tuscany has it all: picture-perfect scenery with rolling hills of vineyards, some of the greatest concentrations of Renaissance art and architecture in Europe and gastronomic delights aplenty. Oh, and there are quite a few fantastic wines to be found there too! It is the third most planted region in Italy and is third in the list of producers of DOC and DOCG wines in the country as well. Whether you go on a Tuscan Tour in search of the much-vaunted Super Tuscans or you are seeking something more traditional such as wine made from the local grape varieties of Canaiolo or Mammolo, you will not be disappointed.

Travel Logistics & What to Know Before You Go

Piedmont is well-connected by road, rail, and air. The region’s main airport, Turin-Caselle, offers international flights and easy access to major cities like Turin, Asti, and Alba. You can also fly into Milan , just a couple of hours’ drive from Piedmont. Trains and buses operate throughout the region, although renting a car provides greater flexibility to explore the picturesque countryside and visit smaller wineries at your leisure. When driving, do note that Italy’s narrow and winding roads can be challenging for some; take your time and enjoy the scenery.

While Italian is the official language, you’ll find that locals are proud of their regional dialect, Piedmontese. This distinct language, though related to Italian, has its own unique charm. Although many locals speak English, especially in popular tourist areas, it’s always appreciated when visitors make an effort to learn a few Italian phrases. Start with the basics: “Buongiorno” (good morning), “Grazie” (thank you), and “Salute” (cheers)!

The Local Vibe

Piedmont’s locals are known for their warmth and hospitality. Embrace the Italian concept of “la dolce vita” (the sweet life) and take the time to truly connect with the people you meet. Visit local markets, dine at family-owned trattorias, and strike up conversations with winemakers. You’ll find that their passion for their land and their crafts is contagious, and these interactions will leave a lasting impression on your heart.

In Italy, tipping is not as customary as it is in some other countries. However, it’s always appreciated when you acknowledge exceptional service. In restaurants, a service charge may be included in the bill, but if not, a tip of around 10% is considered generous. For other services, like tour guides or taxi drivers, rounding up to the nearest euro or adding a few extra euros as a token of appreciation is a kind gesture.

Other Important Piedmont Travel Tips

As you explore Piedmont’s wineries, make sure to book your visits in advance, as many smaller wineries require reservations for tastings and tours. Dress comfortably and modestly, especially when visiting churches or religious sites. Finally, be prepared for the Italian tradition of “riposo,” the afternoon break when many shops and businesses close for a few hours. Take this time to rest, indulge in a leisurely lunch, or perhaps enjoy a rejuvenating “passeggiata” (stroll) through the stunning vineyards.

Subregions of Piedmont

This enchanting region is home to several captivating subregions, each with its own unique charm and allure. As you plan your journey through Piedmont, be sure to include these captivating subregions in your itinerary, immersing yourself in their rich history, diverse flavors, and stunning landscapes.

As you meander through this picturesque subregion, discover the art of winemaking at local cellars, indulge in sumptuous cuisine, and soak up the beauty of the UNESCO-listed landscape. Langhe promises an unforgettable experience for wine aficionados and food enthusiasts alike.

Known as the “capital” of the Langhe subregion, Alba is a vibrant city that serves as an ideal base for exploring Piedmont’s wine country. Wander through the city’s picturesque streets, uncover its historical treasures, and indulge in a memorable truffle hunting adventure in the nearby woods. Alba promises a diverse and captivating experience for travelers seeking the very best of Piedmont’s culinary and viticultural traditions.

Often referred to as the “King of Wines,” Barolo is a charming village and a subregion that produces some of Italy’s most prized red wines. As you wander through its cobblestone streets, immerse yourself in the area’s rich history and visit centuries-old wine cellars where you can sample the exquisite Barolo wines. Don’t miss the chance to explore the stunning vineyards and enjoy breathtaking views of the surrounding hills, which create a picturesque backdrop for your wine-tasting adventures.

Tucked into the southern part of Piedmont, Gavi is a picturesque town surrounded by lush vineyards and rolling hills, perfect for those seeking a serene wine tasting experience. This subregion is famous for its production of Gavi di Gavi, a refreshing and crisp white wine made from the Cortese grape variety. As you explore Gavi, you’ll find a unique blend of history and viticulture, with ancient castles, medieval churches, and charming wineries waiting to be discovered.

Wine enthusiasts will delight in the opportunity to visit local vineyards and wineries to learn about the meticulous process of crafting Gavi di Gavi wines. You’ll also have the chance to sample different expressions of this versatile white wine, which boasts a broad range of flavors from zesty citrus to delicate floral notes.

Beyond its vinicultural offerings, Gavi is a haven for outdoor enthusiasts, with numerous hiking and cycling trails that meander through the region’s verdant countryside. The area also boasts a rich culinary heritage, with local trattorias and osterias offering an array of mouthwatering regional dishes that pair beautifully with Gavi wines.

Gavi is an enchanting destination that combines the best of Piedmont’s wine, history, and natural beauty. It’s an essential addition to your Piedmont itinerary, providing a refreshing contrast to the region’s more famous red wine destinations and an unforgettable experience for wine and nature lovers alike.

Another jewel in Piedmont’s wine crown, Barbaresco is a delightful village and subregion renowned for its elegant and complex red wines. The village itself boasts charming streets, historic buildings, and stunning vistas of the vineyard-clad hills. It’s a must-visit destination for wine lovers seeking an authentic Piedmont experience.

Located on the left bank of the Tanaro River, Roero is a hidden gem in Piedmont, boasting a unique terroir that produces exceptional wines, such as the vibrant Roero Arneis and elegant Roero Nebbiolo. This subregion is also known for its lush landscapes, dotted with vineyards, orchards, and woods. Immerse yourself in Roero’s natural beauty and explore its charming villages, where you’ll find welcoming locals, delicious cuisine, and fascinating history.

Famed for its diverse wines, including Barbera d’Asti, Moscato d’Asti, and Ruché, Monferrato offers a delightful journey through vineyards, hilltop towns, and historic castles. This subregion is perfect for those seeking a taste of Piedmont’s rich culinary traditions, with an array of local dishes that pair perfectly with the area’s wines. As you wander through Monferrato, marvel at the stunning views, indulge in gastronomic delights, and uncover the secrets of this enchanting subregion.

Renowned for its sparkling wines, particularly Asti Spumante, Asti is a must-visit subregion for those with a penchant for bubbles. Discover the centuries-old winemaking techniques employed by local wineries, and immerse yourself in Asti’s vibrant culture and history, which includes a rich tradition of annual festivals and events. This subregion is also home to a variety of charming towns, where you can indulge in delicious cuisine, explore historic sites, and experience the warmth of Piedmont’s hospitality.

Piedmont Grape Varieties

The main grape varieties found in Piedmont include Nebbiolo, Barbera , and Dolcetto for red wines, and Moscato, Cortese , and Arneis for white wines. Nebbiolo, the king of Piedmont grapes, is the grape responsible for the region’s most prestigious wines, Barolo and Barbaresco. These wines are celebrated for their complex aromas, structured tannins, and excellent aging potential. Barbera and Dolcetto are more approachable, producing fruity, easy-drinking reds. Moscato, on the other hand, is the primary grape in Asti, yielding sweet, aromatic sparkling wines, while Cortese and Arneis are used for crisp, refreshing white wines.

What makes Piedmont truly special is the harmony between its unique landscape, passionate winemakers, and time-honored traditions. The fog that often blankets the region’s rolling hills plays a crucial role in the ripening process of the grapes, creating an air of mystique and romance. The deep connection between the people and the land is palpable, as generations of families have tended to the vineyards and crafted exceptional wines that reflect the essence of Piedmont.

Cuisine of Piedmont

In addition, the region’s rich culinary heritage, which includes dishes like truffles, risotto, and braised meats, complements the wines and further elevates the gastronomic experience. Piedmont’s unique combination of natural beauty, diverse terroir, and dedication to preserving traditions, alongside its world-class wines, makes it a truly enchanting destination for wine enthusiasts and casual drinkers alike.

Frequently Asked Questions about Visiting Piedmont Italy

Are there guided piedmont wine tours available, how do i book one.

Yes, there are guided wine tours available in the Piedmont region, providing a fantastic way to explore the area’s diverse wineries and indulge in its exquisite wines. Winetraveler.com and this Piedmont tour guide feature several highly-rated options, most of which are private and customizable to cater to the preferences of discerning Winetravelers. These tours are led by experienced guides who are well-versed in the region’s history, culture, and wine production, ensuring an enriching and immersive experience for every visitor. By choosing a guided wine tour, you can enjoy the convenience of transportation, curated itineraries, and insider access to some of the region’s most renowned wineries.

How can I arrange transportation between wineries in Piedmont?

Arranging transportation to the most famous wine subregions in Piedmont can be done in several ways, depending on your preferences and budget: Guided Wine Tours Booking a private guided wine tour  is a convenient option, as it typically includes transportation, allowing you to sit back and enjoy the scenic journey without worrying about navigating the winding roads. Car Rental Renting a car in Piedmont provides flexibility in exploring the subregions at your own pace. Remember to plan your winery visits ahead of time and designate a driver who won’t be drinking, as drunk driving laws are strictly enforced in Italy. Public Transportation Although not as convenient as a private car or tour, you can use public transportation to reach some of the subregions. Trains and buses connect major towns, but services may be limited, especially to smaller wineries. Research schedules and routes in advance to avoid delays and complications. Reference the above travel guide for some of our favorite transport and wine tour operators. Taxis and Rideshares For shorter distances or if you prefer not to drive, you can use taxis or rideshare services like Uber. Keep in mind that availability might be limited in rural areas, so it’s wise to book in advance. Private Drivers or Chauffeurs While we do suggest hiring a private driver who’s a local and knows the wine scene, there are many upscale options that simply offer customizable transport if you’re looking for a luxurious and hassle-free experience.

When is the best time of year to visit Piedmont for wine tasting?

The best time of year to visit Piedmont for wine tasting is during the fall, specifically between September and November . This period is ideal for a wine-focused trip to the region for several reasons. First, fall is the grape harvest season in Piedmont, and you’ll have the opportunity to witness the excitement and energy of the winemaking process. During this time, the vineyards are bustling with activity as grapes are picked and processed, making for a truly authentic experience. Second, the weather during the fall months is generally mild and pleasant, with temperatures that are comfortable for exploring the vineyards and wineries. The vibrant colors of the foliage create a picturesque backdrop for your wine tastings and scenic drives through the countryside. Additionally, fall in Piedmont is marked by numerous wine and food festivals, such as the Alba White Truffle Fair and the Barolo and Barbaresco wine festivals. These events offer a fantastic opportunity to immerse yourself in the local culture, sample regional delicacies, and enjoy a variety of wines. While fall is the peak time for wine enthusiasts, visiting during other seasons also has its merits. Spring offers mild weather and blooming landscapes, while winter can provide a more intimate experience with fewer tourists. Summer is just beautiful with everything bright and green. Regardless of the season, ensure you check winery opening hours and make reservations in advance to secure your tastings.

FARM TO TABLE

Things move at a slower pace in Frascati. Nowhere is this fact better represented than in the the way food is produced and prepared. Porchetta is cooked in a wood burning oven for over 8 hours. The olive oil is extra virgin and cold pressed. The pasta is all hand-made. Our wine is still made with ancient techniques first used by the Romans. Here, the local baker, winemaker, tavern owner, and restaurant owner all value organic and locally sourced products. Not because its trendy, but because it’s tradition!

OLD WORLD CHARM

The Ancient Town of Frascati sits on the rim of a dormant volcano. Its rich volcanic soil was much sought after by the Etruscans, Ancient Romans, the Vatican State and most recently by Romans on weekend get-aways. Wine has been produced in Frascati for thousands of years. Frascati wine is known as the ‘Golden Wine of the Romans’, the ‘Pope’s Wine’ and the white wine of Rome. Each stone building, cobblestone street, and ancient church tells the story of the centuries of people who have called Frascati home.

Ten years with travelers.

We promote special, tailor made , enjoyable activities. A day in Montalcino or in the other towns of the Val d’Orcia should be a life experience rather than a hurried “touch and go”. We rely on quality and we would like every traveller to experience the true sense of Tuscan Style just as we live it.

Think to our tours as a little magical journey; just like dreaming with your eyes open . They are a taste of the wonderfully simplicity that brim from these hills; a taste of the good stuff from times of old in the same manner as the vivid colors of children’s crayons or the warmth of a wood stove on a cold winter’s morn make you feel. They leave a mark and warm the heart because we only choose people and activities with a distinct soul .

A day or a week with us will make you want to come back in order to further experience the magic you encountered, to write to the people whom you met since we do not offer sightseeing trips but rather excursions into the authentic .

From beginning to end Montalcino Wine Tours was absolutely perfect! We started with email correspondence with Giovanni. We only had one day for a guided tour, so he helped us by organizing the best day. Our guide Chiara was so knowledgeable! She was professional, but also personable and made us feel right at home. Our day began with a truffle hunt with Paolo (and his dog Millie). If you are in Tuscany during truffle hunting seasons, you must book this with Montalcino Wine Tours, specifically Paolo. Again, so knowledgeable. And an unforgettable experience. Our lunch was DIVINE! We had a little extra time in the afternoon, as we were ahead of schedule. Not a problem – Chiara drove us to the Abbey of Sant’Antimo to explore. A beautiful spot to walk off our lunch and take pictures of the gorgeous scenery. We ended our day at La Fornace Winery and sampled their delicious wine! We will definitely be recommending Montalcino Wine Tours to friends and family travelling in the area. It was our favorite day of our entire vacation. Thank you!!

My husband and I booked the full day wine tour through Giovanni months in advance of arriving in Italy. Booking was very smooth over email. Mario, our driver picked us up at our hotel in the morning and assured us we had a great day ahead visiting three different types of wineries with a stop for lunch at Locanda Demtra. He took us to Collosorbo which was an old estate winery owned by a mother and her two daughters. We had a wonderful tour of the estate and the wine cellar which dated back hundreds of years and was so amazing to see! We bought a couple of bottles and Mario assured us him and Giovanni could ship the bottles home to us. Then Mario took us to Costanti. the woman who gave us the tour ( I forgot her name but she was lovely) also did the tasting and the wine was great. We bought another couple of bottles. Mario took some great photos for us in front of the vineyards and Montalcino town. He was a great guide and so knowledgeable about the town because he grew up there. This made the experience very personal which was great! Then he took us to lunch at Locanda Demtra which is owned by Gio and his brother. Wow. As soon as you walk in he kitchen and grounds they smell amazing and they cooked us a fantastic authentic local dish served with great wine overlooking the Tuscan hills. This place also offers cooking classes which unfortunately were booked but the people we met highly recommended them! Our last stop was the smallest winery but to me the most special because of Gemma- one of the owners. She runs it with her father and does everything from harvesting the grapes, to labeling the bottles and running the marketing. She took us through the vineyards and told us her father hand picks every grape for each harvest. Then we went inside for a tasting. At the end of the tasting she offered us her family batch of Vin Santo which made us feel so special and as if she was welcoming us into her home. We bought a few more bottles and our tour came to an end. Mario was so accommodating. He even stopped at a convenience store so my husband could buy some Advil. We left our bottles with Mario to ship home to us. Before dropping us off he recommended one of his favorite local restaurants Il Pozzo and helped us make a reservation. Then gave us his cell phone number in case we needed recommendations the rest of the trip. We ended up texting Mario the next day when we went to Pienza and he recommended a great farm for lunch that also has a cheese factory! Mario truly was a great tour guide from start to finish and we hope to return in the future to do another tour with him! Two days after we arrived home from Italy our wine arrived safe and sound in the US! Truly 5 star service!! This is a must do for your next Italy vacation! Thanks Giovanni and Mario!!!!

We visited a nice mix of places, from very small family-run farms to midsized wineries. Each place had a unique brand and take on the wine process so it was nice to see the differences in the process each family does. We loved all the wines, he made purchasing and shipping product home incredibly easy. I hope to get the chance to take this tour again on our next trip to Tuscany.

Most enjoyable day touring the Montalcino vineyards! Chiara was our guide, and was awesome! Her passion for wine, and her knowledge of Montalcino and local wine were very evident. We communicated in advance so she could find out our wine background, interests, and preferences. We did the six-hour, 2 vineyard tour with lunch included.

Chiara picked us up at our hotel right on time and in a comfortable ride. She took us to 2 small, family-owned vineyards where we got a tour of the vineyard and quality time spent with the winemaker. Chiara acted as translator at the first vineyard where the winemaker did not speak much English. We had nice tastings at each vineyard (in the homes of the winemakers) and the opportunity to purchase wine from each vineyard. Chiara handled the details for shipping back to the US.

After visiting the vineyards, we had a marvelous lunch at the local cooking school (Locandra Demetra). Amazing lunch with an amazing view!!

Highly recommend Montalcino Wine tours and Chiara as a guide!!

Having the day with Mario touring us around Montalcino was easily one of the highlights of our stay in Tuscany. Mario was a pleasure to talk with and was a wealth of information regarding not only the vineyards we visited that day but about the wines, other vineyards and the history of Montalcino. Obviously, with Mario being a native, we felt like we had an insiders view which he was very open in sharing. Brad, wanting to know as much as he could, about Montalcino vineyards, the different growing regions, Brunello di Montalcino and where the best restaurants & enotecas were… Mario had answers to All his never ending questions. While Molly & I had just met Mario that day, we felt we knew him as a friend by days end…which we didn’t want to end. What a fabulous, memorable day. We can’t wait to go back again and maybe this time help pick some grapes or olives! Molto Bene Ciao for now, Brad & Molly Kushnir

There are not enough words to explain how wonderful of an experience we had with Mario on our honeymoon. By the end of our trip, we didn’t consider Mario a tour guide, but a good friend, and one that we knew we would be back to visit. His tours are so customized and personal, you feel like you are getting the true insiders view of Tuscany. His family has lived in the region for generations- he speaks about his home with pure contagious compassion. I will never forget the day he dropped us off for our next destination and how sad we were to part ways- we wish we could have had his guidance and company for the entire trip! We can’t wait to go back.

Our day started with a little adversity with a vehicle, which resulted in getting started a little later than expected, which ultimately caused us to miss first vineyard. Chiara handled the situation perfectly and in no time we were back up and running with a replacement vehicle and we were off for a fantastic day!

Chiara made a few calls whist we were visiting our first vineyard, and was able to make arrangements for us to make a visit to a 3rd vineyard/winery at the end of our day. WOW, talk about going above and beyond!

After our first stop we were taken to lunch at an amazing restaurant right in Montalcino which included wine and whatever we wanted to eat. We were given amazing treatment and service by the owner Antinio and the food was incredible!

After lunch we headed for our 2nd stop was absolutely incredible and were intrigued with her passion for her wines, her family and the pride was evident. we LOVED this stop, highly recommend and the wine was fantastic and free to pour as much as we wanted!

Our final stop was Baricci. Although the production is VERY small, if you love Brunello you have to make it a point to stop in here (if you can get a visit) or at least try their wine while in Montalcino. Francesco, his brother Federico and father Pietro are very busy as they are the heart and soul of this family run winery and we were VERY lucky (thanks to Chiara no doubt) to be able to get a visit to see them just after harvest! Francesco spent so much time with us we couldn’t believe it, his passion is second to none and it shows in the amazing product that they produce there! The POS machine was down during the evening, so we went back the next day to conclude our purchase, the entire family was there again working away! (Side note: They ship to Canada, wooohooo)

Overall the experience provided by Chiara and Montalcino Wine Tours was truly amazing and I would HIGHLY recommend it to anyone who visits the Montalcino area.

Once again, thanks so much for having us!

Wow! I can’t say enough good things about this tour! We were in Tuscany for a wedding and a group of 13 of us booked this tour. Giovanni and Chiara picked us up at our Villa in 2 really nice, air conditioned vans. Then we were off to our first winery and tasting. We learned so much about the area, wine, weather and any other question we could throw at them!😊. They are so incredibly knowledgeable about the area. The first winery was fantastic, we learned so much about the process and tastes amazing wines. Then they took us to a tour of an Abbey which was so inspiring and beautiful, and then to lunch on their family farm. Holy smokes!! Alessandro, Giovanni’s brother and their family hosts an incredible lunch….you might as well be part of the family as that’s how you feel as soon as you sit down at the table! After a lunch that is so tasty, you are off to another vineyard and tasting. Another great choice! All the staff at both wineries are so friendly and make the tastings so much fun! Then they drove us back to our Villa…we were with them the entire day but it flew by as we were having so much fun learning about wines and the entire Tuscany area. I would HIGHLY recommend this tour! You will be treated to a fantastic day!

We hired this company for a transfer from Milan to Tuscany and a tour of the Modena and Parma on the way. Originally we were planning on a wine tour in Montalcino with them, but we ran out of time. Unfortunately our plane from the US was several hours late, but we found Giovanni easily at the airport. He had booked a tour of a cheese farm that we also missed sadly. He got us to Modena in time for lunch and a tour around town. He also stopped by a modena balsamic vinegar facility spontaneously, and we were able to get a private tour and pick up our first Italy souvenirs. He drove us to our hotel in Greve and gave us all sorts of Italy info on the way. He is very likeable and easy to talk to on long trips. He is an outdoor enthusiast and I’m sure we be great on an outdoor adventure. If you want a tour of the famous Brunello wineries, I’m confident this would be the group to do it with. They were all from the area and well connected.

We had the most amazing and memorable day in Montalcino thanks to Giovanni!! My boyfriend and I scheduled a private tour with Giovanni, and he was punctual, knowledgeable, warm, and created the most perfect day for us in this small wine country city. He picked us up from our hotel, and we headed to our first winery. This was a small winery, that took the time to give a tour of their vineyard and their facility. It gave us such an appreciation of the wine we enjoyed later that visit. We met the winery owner and his daughter, and got know them and their experience as a winery owner in Italy.

From there we went to a medium sized winery and then a large one. Each appointment was set up in advance by Giovanni, and they were ready and expecting us. It was such a neat experience and not at all like the herd feeling we get when wine tasting in the US.

In between we went to lunch at a small restaurant in Giovanni’s village – which was so quaint – only 53 people live there! The food, wine, and service were amazing!

Giovanni was so knowledgeable, professional, and warm. He made this experience an experience of a lifetime and I would refer him and go back to him in a heartbeat!

We actually did the cooking class with his brother the next day, I’ll be sharing a review with them as well. Another absolute must while in Montalcino!!

Thank you Giovanni for the memories of a lifetime!

We enjoyed an all day wine tour with Giovanni in September during a 4 day stay in Tuscany. We were were traveling with our daughter and her husband, who had hired Giovanni two years previous, so we knew we were in for a treat. He arranged 2 different winery visits and tastings in the Montalcino area, plus a delicious Al Fresco lunch overlooking his own vineyard. One winery was a small scale, personal operation, and the other a more sophisticated larger scale winery, both with tours by the proprietors. The wineries were nicely curated for our interests, and we were delighted with both. The tours were fascinating, in depth and inspiring. We were picked up promptly in a spacious van, and Giovanni was quite personable and engaging and easy to talk with. We thoroughly enjoyed his company and would highly recommend his tours.

We asked for a one-day tour of Montalcino wineries, and Giovanni put together the itinerary.

We were 7 travelers, wine lovers but not experts, stopping in Porto Santo Stefano aboard a SeaDream Yacht Club cruise. Our driver, Luca, picked us up at the port in a clean, comfortable, and spacious van. Luca was friendly, knowledgeable, and funny.

We went to a medium sized, well known winery in the morning. We toured the vineyard and cellar and tasted 6 great wines. And these were pretty generous pours for a tasting (this was a theme for the day). We lingered, drank, and ate, and liked the wine so much that we bought several bottles on our way out. With the strong US dollar, we were surprised by the reasonable prices for decently aged (2010, 2012, 2015) Riserva wines.

We can’t possibly recommend Montalcino Wine Tours enough! Our whole experience with them was absolutely fantastic. On the planning side, Chiara was so incredibly helpful and always available to answer questions and give us options for the things we wanted to do. She even helped us arrange transportation out of Montalcino, which isn’t the easiest thing to do. And then the experience itself was perfect. We did a Brunello wine tour with Giovanni, who is extremely knowledgeable about both the Montalcino area and winemaking (we learned more about wine in those hours with Giovanni than we have anywhere else), and it was everything we hoped it would be. Great wine, beautiful lunch, informative, and so much fun. Just tell Chiara and her team what you want to do, and they will make it all happen for you. Thank you SO much, Chiara and Giovanni! Our time in Montalcino was magical and everything we needed to relieve the stress of the last few years.

I booked a full day in Montalcino with Giovanni in advance of a family trip to Italy (me, my wife, and both sets of our parents). I reached out to a number of tour operators, but many would not do a day trip to Montalcino due to the distance (we were staying at a villa about an hour south, on the border of Tuscany and Umbria). Giovanni ensured us that it would not be a problem and that we would have a fantastic, full day. He could not have been more right.

We were picked up early by our driver for the day, Mario, in a clean, spacious van. Mario was THE BEST – no better resource for a day of being in Montalcino. He has spent his life in and around Montalcino (his grandfather was the fireman, his father the postman, and his brother the Mayor).

Mario took us to two fantastic wineries, to the Abbey of Sant’Antimo, which was absolutely beautiful. We also had an amazing lunch in Montalcino and spent some time walking around the town. On our way back to the villa, Mario insisted that we make two additional stops, first was to see the villa that was featured in Gladiator, and then a stop in Pienza for the pecorino.

All in all a great day and highly recommended!

y wife and I booked unforgettable wine and food experiences with Chiara this past week. Chiara is a rock star in Montalcino and seems to know everyone in the area. You tell her what you are interested in and let her do her magic. There isn’t a reservation she can’t book. Total access and you will not only enjoy the tastings but the ride and conversation with her is worth the trip as well. She should be the Mayor of Montalcino. In any case she has my vote. 🙂 Also, if you have not done a deeper dive vineyard and food tour in Montalcino, then make it a priority. Just the best!

If in Montalcino, not to be missed. Giovanni and Chiara coordinated with us prior to our arrival to understand our interests to customize our day. We were looking for smaller wineries.

Giovanni picked us at 9:45. We visited two wineries in the morning. We spent time walking in the vineyards and cellars talking about the wine growing process and the special policies for cellaring and bottling the Rosso and Brunello de Montalcino wines. And of course tasting the wines. We met the winemaker at the second winery.

Next up was lunch at Locanda Demetra, a small restaurant and cooking school located just outside the city with beautiful views of the countryside. We ate outside and had an appetizer sampler, two small pasta dishes, a pork medallion, a bottle of Rosso de Montalcino, dessert of chocolate cake and gelato, and coffee. All part of the tour costs.

After a leisurely lunch, we visited the Abbey at San Antimo for a quick visit and off to one last winery.

We finished the day around 6:15 pm. We never felt rushed. We had time to soak it all in, ask questions, and really enjoy the whole experience. We bought wine along the way. All of the wineries ship back to USA. We decided to take our wine and let this company ship them all back together. Quite reasonable for international shipping. All of the wines from this region are of high quality and very reasonable comparing to Napa Valley for similar quality wines.

I would highly recommend this tour to anyone that is a wine enthusiast.

This last trip in June 2022 we even had a little bit of extra time between appointments and they managed to find an opening at another winery, which ended up having absolutely amazing wine. These wine tours are as good as any I’ve had in other winery locations such as Napa and Sonoma. Highly recommend.

Our experience with Mario and his team was unforgettable. His passion for his home region in Italy is obvious and whether it was a pre-planned day or a spur of the moment trip, he ensured a seamless and enjoyable experience. Mario and his team are welcoming, knowledgeable, flexible and professional. Our experience did not feel like a tour, it felt like experiencing Italy with a good friend. We are headed back next summer… see you then Mario!!

Mario picked my husband and I up at our hotel and drove us in his Mercedes van to beautiful Montalcino. The entire day was like a dream. We visited several wineries, the town shops and castle, and had a breathtaking lunch.

This day was the highlight of our honeymoon in Italy. I have recommended Mario to anyone I know going to the Tuscany area. He truly made us feel like VIP the entire day. We ended up shipping several cases of the best wine in the world home to the US and now refuse to drink anything else. This was one of the best experiences in my life.

No other touring company could compare to the true hospitality we were shown. We left feeling like family and plan on going back as much as possible to see our friend Mario.

Where do I begin? For starters, the experience was so fantastic the first time, that we booked Mario for a second tour on our return two years later. Mario will gladly pick you up wherever you are staying, he’s prompt, his car is clean, and the anticipation for a day of wine tasting is next to none! Mario arranged for us to have private tours and tastings at each of the wineries we visited, and each one was just as fantastic as the one before. Mario is extremely knowledgable on all things Brunello wine….from how the location of the vineyard to how the grapes are processed and the impact on the flavor and quality of the wines.

Thanks to Mario, our wine cellar is full of many different Brunello wines, and each time we pop the cork, we travel back to exactly where the grapes were born. Absolutely, 100%, without a doubt, book Mario for your Montalcino wine tour!

14 Unique Winery Tours From Around The World

vineyard hot air balloon tour

A huge part of the appeal of visiting a winery is being able to taste the wines on-site, often close to the vineyards that produced the grapes. Seeing the environment responsible for the wine in your glass really ties the whole experience together, especially if you can visit the cellar and see some of the winemaking facilities. While that's already a fun outing for any oenophile, some wineries take it up a notch and offer tours that transform the day into an unforgettable experience.

With wineries often located in regions with striking surroundings, it's no surprise that many organized visits highlight the features that make these locations one-of-a-kind. Whether viewing vineyards from up in the sky, pairing wine with creative elements, or showcasing the natural wonders that make up the landscapes, there are plenty of ways to expand your love of wine beyond the glass. Of course, you'll also get to taste the wine as you explore these unique winery tours from around the world.

1. Hot air balloon ride at Bodegas Muga (Haro, Spain)

Start your tour of Bodegas Muga in Haro, Spain with a bird's-eye view after being whisked off to a hot air balloon awaiting inflation. Along with a group of visitors, you'll assist in the pre-departure process before taking off above the vineyards and surrounding areas. For a premium price, opt for the private package and soar high with only your select group of guests.

Located in the region of Rioja, Bodegas Muga has no shortage of dazzling landscapes to view. Take in the rolling hills, plateaus, endless vineyards, and unforgettable beauty of one of Spain's most prized winemaking regions . Considering the lack of steering capacities, your point of arrival will be up to the whims of the wind and the hot air balloon. Nevertheless, once you're back on the ground you'll be transported to the winery for a tasting and optional guided tour. Tie the day together by sipping on top Rioja wines, made with native tempranillo, garnacha, mazuelo, graciano, macabeo, and malvasia grape varieties.

2. VR winery visit at Campo alla Sughera (Bolgheri, Italy)

Bolgheri is famous in Tuscany for being home to the region's prestigious Super Tuscan wines, primarily made with international rather than regional grape varieties. Now, Campo alla Sughera is introducing an immersive virtual reality experience that goes beyond viticultural innovation. Whereas some wineries offer the chance to take part in the laborious harvest, this tour provides insider knowledge without the backbreaking work.

Simply don a VR visor and witness the many stages of a vineyard and winery during harvest time, from hand-picking the juicy grapes on the vines to transferring them to the tanks in the cellar. Additionally, guests will be guided through the physical winery, cellar, and vineyards to see where the magic truly takes place. Finally, the tour ends with a tasting that includes four of Campo alla Sughera's top wines made with varieties like cabernet sauvignon, cabernet franc, and merlot, offering visitors a peak experience from start to finish.

3. Icewine experience at Inniskillin (Niagara, Canada)

Although it's not exclusive to Canada, the country's viticultural repertoire is commonly associated with icewine. In Niagara, Ontario, Inniskillin is arguably responsible for much of this international clout, winning a top award at Vinexpo in Bordeaux, France in 1991. Since, the winery continues to produce exceptional icewine (and plenty of other styles as well), offering an icewine experience for guests who want to take a closer look at the chilly process.

To understand everything you need to know about icewine , taste a flight of three wines, sampling them in assorted glasses to savor the elements that make each one distinct. Sparkling icewine and assorted grape varieties provide a broader tasting experience for novices and aficionados alike. Additionally, a few tasty morsels accompany the wine samples, highlighting some of the many ways of pairing icewine. Considering the premium price of a bottle of icewine, partaking in this tour is a valuable way to discover what you love most about this unique style.

4. Underground cellar labyrinth at Cricova Winery (Moldova)

Anyone with a fear of confined spaces might want to skip out on Cricova Winery's underground cellar labyrinth tour. The Moldovan winery is home to what it describes as a "subterranean city" with streets holding endless rows of wine casks. Designed following extensive limestone excavation (to build a neighboring city), the roads are almost 300 feet below ground, making it all the more exciting to venture down during the guided tour. The maze of lanes stretches for around 75 miles, holding over one million wine bottles.

The tour makes its way through segments of the route by transporting guests on a small train and can be combined with a wine-tasting flight in one of the underground tasting rooms. You might even catch sight of exclusive wine collections belonging to Putin and other political figures. Cricova is known for its traditional method of sparkling wine, but you can also taste wines made with cabernet sauvignon, pinot noir, sauvignon blanc, and muscat.

5. Blend your own wine at d'Arenberg (McLaren Vale, Australia)

A little work never hurt. At d'Arenberg in McLaren Vale, South Australia, winery guests get to step into the role of a winemaker at The Blending Bench. The real heavy lifting is done for you ahead of time, as the grapes have already been harvested, pressed, and fermented. Instead, you'll be presented with three samples of shiraz wine to blend at your discretion. McLaren Vale is home to some of the top shiraz vines in Australia, so you'll be working with the best.

Aside from highlighting the nuances of the different base wines, the process will finetune your senses and assist you in identifying the qualities you prefer in your wine. There's plenty of sipping involved as you hone in on the individual characteristics. You won't be going home empty-handed, either. Once you've completed your custom blend, it's transferred to a 750-milliliter bottle that you can take home to enjoy at your leisure. If you want to expand on this experience, pair it with an eight-course dinner with wine at the on-site restaurant.

6. Underwater cellar dive at Edivo Vina (Hrvatska, Croatia)

Scuba diving and wine don't usually go hand in hand, but at Edivo Vina in Hrvatska, Croatia, an underwater cellar awaits exploration. The winery doesn't age all of its wine in the Adriatic Sea, but a selection of  Croatian coral wine is aged in the watery depths . Made with local Croatian grapes, the wine is transferred to glass bottles and stored in amphora vessels before being submerged in steel cages around 60-80 feet below the surface and nestled in a shipwreck. The cool, stable climate and tranquil setting appear to be optimal for the wine's maturation process.

Following a short boat ride to the site, certified divers can venture down to the cellar with a PADI instructor. All of the required equipment is available for rent, making it a fun way to dive and see an underwater winery on the same tour. Following the dive, a mixed selection of wines (aged above and below water) is available for tasting along with light snacks at Edivo Wine Bar.

7. Art museum tasting at Hess Persson Estates (Napa, California)

For many oenophiles, wine is an art, so it makes sense to combine a sensory tasting experience with a visual arts one. At Hess Person Estates in Napa Valley, the two come together seamlessly with the on-site art gallery. Art lovers can tour the Hess Collection Contemporary Art Museum with the director of art, who spent dozens of years familiarizing himself with the pieces alongside the founder. Engage with the dynamic works in a small group as you explore the various meanings and sensations that arise.

Once the visual arts tour is complete, you will be treated to an educational wine-tasting experience with one of the viticultural experts. With vineyards located on Mount Veeder and surrounding areas, the wines are all infused with the complexities and nuances of the varied terrains. Try top-tier cabernet sauvignon, pinot noir, and chardonnay, among other well-executed classic varieties.

8. Dog hike and tasting at Kunde Family Winery (Sonoma, California)

If you like to bring your four-legged bestie everywhere you go, then schedule a visit to Kunde Family Winery. Located in Sonoma, California, the fifth-generation family-owned winery is the perfect place for a hike followed by wine tasting. It's worth noting the hike lasts around four hours and takes you through a valley and into the Mayacamas Mountain range, so skip the winery-chic fashion and lace up your hiking boots. Described as "moderately strenuous," you'll want to ensure your dog is up for the activity, too.

Nevertheless, the beautiful views make the effort well worth it, and the included wine tasting and lunch provide you with plenty of sustenance to refuel after the hike. Options like viognier, chardonnay, sauvignon blanc, merlot, syrah, and zinfandel are just some of the varieties you can pair with your meal. Aside from working out your body, you'll also work out your mind as you learn about the viticultural and winemaking practices in the vineyards and cellar. Dog lovers will be pleased to know that part of the tour proceeds are allocated to local dog rescue projects.

9. Trek with llamas at Divine Llama Vineyards (East Bend, North Carolina)

If you don't have a dog to bring to your winery outing, consider heading to Divine Llama Vineyards in East Bend, North Carolina. The farm is home to the largest population of llamas in the Southeast, making it an excellent spot to better acquaint yourself with the furry animals. The tour consists of about two hours of hiking in mixed terrain, passing forests, rolling hills, and a creek. You'll be hiking with llamas in tow, with opportunities to feed them and snap some pictures to commemorate the moment.

The hike finishes back at the winery where you'll get to sample the wines. Some classic varieties like merlot and cabernet franc are featured, as well as hybrid wine grapes that are better suited for the climate  and other fruits like blackberries and peaches. The winery regularly hosts local food trucks with assorted bites, or feel free to pack a picnic and make a day out of your visit to Divine Llama Vineyards.

10. Tasting in a bunker at Château Siran (Bordeaux, France)

You might associate Bordeaux, France, with some of the most prestigious wineries in the world, but it's also the location of an anti-atomic bunker built during the Cold War that now stores tens of thousands of bottles dating as far back as the early 1900s. At Château Siran, a family-owned winery in the Margaux appellation, visitors can partake in a vertical tasting of three of the winery's vintages in an underground bunker. For escape room enthusiasts, an alternate tour offers an "escape game" experience in the bunker, highlighting its armor-like characteristics.

Château Siran wines consist of a blend of cabernet sauvignon, merlot, and petit verdot. The latter is often featured in smaller quantities in Bordeaux, but its notable presence here adds an edge to the Siran blend. A vertical tasting allows guests to taste the evolution of the wine over the years, adding a historical layer to the tour that mirrors the setting. If you tend to feel claustrophobic in enclosed areas, skip the underground visit and savor the wines in the tasting room.

11. Horseback ride and tasting at Tenuta Torciano (Tuscany, Italy)

Natural landscapes and wineries go hand in hand, so it's no surprise that many vineyard tours take advantage of the scenery. At Tenuta Torciano in Tuscany, guests can go horseback riding in the surrounding hills of the Chianti region. Located close to the medieval town of San Gimignano, the excursion is the perfect outing for wine, nature, and history aficionados. The ride lasts about an hour, allowing visitors to experience the serene backdrop of the vineyards.

After dismounting, guests are provided with wine samples and Tuscan appetizers as they learn about the various facets of local winemaking. The Italian geographical region is most known for the sangiovese grape, and at Tenuta Torciano you can taste it in various DOCG wines such as Chianti Classico, Brunello di Montalcino, and Morellino di Scansano. Super Tuscan blends made with international grapes like cabernet sauvignon and merlot are available as well, along with the local white wine, Vernaccia di San Gimignano DOCG. A classic wine and food pairing — including charcuterie, cheese, and a drizzle of extra virgin olive oil and balsamic vinegar — ensures both foodies and oenophiles will find something they love.

12. Most Instagrammable wine tour at Trius Winery (Niagara, Canada)

At Trius Winery in Niagara, Ontario, wine lovers can embark on an experience touted as "the most Intagrammable winery tour on the planet." Granted, an existing interest in Instagram and a perfectly curated design and setting will boost your overall enjoyment of the visit, but it's not a prerequisite.

#TheTriusTour takes winery-goers through an art installation paired with wine samples. Taste the rosé, made with gamay and syrah grapes, in the floral Rosé Lounge overlooking the vineyards. Then, make your way to the Sparkling House, where you can sit in a swing, made to mimic the cage on the cork of a bottle of bubbly. Don't miss out on the Bubble Tub as you sip on the assorted selection of traditional method sparkling wines and finish the tour at the classy Brut Bar. It's not just a photo-op either; guides are available to answer any questions regarding winemaking and the wines, rounding out the Canadian winery experience from start to finish.

13. Eco wine safari at Avondale Wine (Paarl, South Africa)

South Africa is a hot spot for safari tourism, and at Avondale Wine in Paarl, visitors can take part in a different spin on the classic. Here, guests can enjoy a leisurely tour of the vineyards from the comfort of a tractor-drawn cart during the Eco Wine Safari. After sipping on a glass of MCC (Methode Cap Classique), South Africa's premium traditional method sparkling wine, climb on board to explore the vineyards as you learn about the viticultural practices at Avondale Wine. Taste a range of wines within steps of the vines that grew the fruit for a close-up look at the interaction between wine and its terroir.

Continue the tour in the cellars, where you'll see Avondale's gravity-flow method for transferring wine to underground tanks. Upon returning to the Tasting Gallery, pick up a bottle of your favorite sample or try something new from the selection, which includes grape varieties such as chenin blanc, viognier, roussanne, grenache, syrah, and plenty more. The winery also features a changing art exhibit, providing guests with a full spectrum of experiences during the tour.

14. Helicopter tour at Seppeltsfield Wines (Barossa, Australia)

If you want to experience a winery from up above, a helicopter is the most efficient mode of transport. At Seppeltsfield Winery in Australia's Barossa Valley, guests can hop on a helicopter ride and survey the vineyards from the sky. Depending on the tour you book, you'll fly for about half an hour, overseeing the vines and surrounding areas as you take in the valley's natural wonders complete with rolling hills and palm trees. Considering its proximity to other wineries, you'll get your fill of bird's-eye vineyard views.

Once you're back at the winery, make your way to the tasting room to sample a flight of wines. Seppeltsfield grows a wide range of varieties, including white grapes like riesling and vermentino and red grapes like Nero d'Avola, grenache, and shiraz — the darling of Barossa. While you're on-site, take advantage of the multitude of ongoing projects at the estate, including a cooperage, a craft and design studio gallery, and a soap factory making raw soap and skin products. With so much to do, you might as well stay the night at The Lodge at Seppeltsfield to make the most of it.
