Auckland students visit Fiji Though the All Blacks played a friendly match at Albert Park in 1913 on their way back from California, Auckland University became the first New Zealand team to tour Fiji in August 1926 at the same time that the Tongan national team took on the Fiji Test team. 1926-27

Tonga ties prove priceless Having raised expectations with the 6-0 win over Samoa at Apia Park in August 1924, the first-ever Fiji Test team continued their overseas adventure with a successful nine-match tour of Tonga in which they won seven, drew one and lost one. More importantly, this tour began the healthy relationship with the Tonga Rugby Union that continues to this day. 1924-26

7am kick-off, a tree on halfway? Fiji played their first Test match on 18 August, 1924, against Western Samoa, winning 6-0. While the game kicked off at 7am with a small tree on the halfway line and Fiji played in an all-black uniform, some things evidently do not change – Fiji were praised for their speed and agility, Samoa were described as “the big, sturdy men of Apia.” 1924

Pioneers of Fiji Rugby Rugby was believed first played in Fiji in the 1880s by European and Fijian soldiers of the Native Constabulary at Ba. By the early 1900s, reports of games began to appear in the Press and although most players were expatriates, a club competition began in 1904. 1913

The origins of the cibi The meaning of Teivovo

Western Samoa 0 Fiji 6 – the first test match of 1924 The general opinion on all sides was that the game was the cleanest and finest exhibition of football played in Samoa.

Major dates in Fiji rugby history:

Fiji is one of the few countries where rugby is the principal sport. Only New Zealand, Wales, Samoa, Tonga and the Cook Islands can make a similar claim.

1884 : Rugby was first played in Fiji by European and Fijian soldiers of the Native Constabulary at Ba, on Viti Levu Island.

1900 : By this time reports of games began to appear in the press, and although most players were expatriates, a club competition began in 1904. Two of the earliest clubs were Civil Service and Constabulary.

1907 : A.C. Holms, the Wairarapa fullback who passed through Suva with three other New Zealand players, not only played with Fijians on Albert Park, Suva, but predicted (in a Vancouver newspaper) that Fiji would one day make their mark in rugby football.

1911 : The crews of visiting warships provided frequent opposition and the first regular club, Davies, had been formed.

1913 : A group of New Zealanders came to build the Grand Pacific Hotel in Suva. One of them was plumber Paddy Sheehan from Dunedin — a former captain of Otago. Sheehan immediately saw the need for organisation of the then-casual Fijian rugby. He formed the Pacific Club and by the end of their first meeting three more clubs were planned and eventually formed: United Services, Cadets and Rewa. Together these clubs formed the Fiji RFU although played only in Suva. When the first officers of the Union were elected, Sheehan became chairman. Sir Ernest Bickham Sweet-Escott, the governor of the time, donated the Escott Shield for the club championship, which was won by the Pacific Club and nearly 90 years later is still competed for by Suva Union clubs.

1914 : A so called ‘native competition’ began under the leadership of Ratu Epeli Ganilau and the first clubs were Taipou, Tarirere, Hill and Ofisa (Police) RFC.

1915 : Local businessman J J Davies presented the Davies Cup, which was first won by Gaunavou (Tarirere). The same year a Fiji Native Union was begun and became affiliated to the Fiji RFU.

1924 : Fiji’s first overseas match was in Apia, Samoa, in August 1924 while the team was on its way to Tonga. The match was played at 7am to allow Samoan opponents time to get to work afterwards and was played on a pitch with a large tree on the halfway line. Fiji played in all black and won 6-0.

1926: The first visit by an overseas side was that of Auckland University College. Tonga also visited Fiji that year and for the first time Fiji played in their present strip of white jersey, palm tree badge, and black shorts.

1928: A Fiji schools competition was started, but it was not until 1939 that the Fiji Schools Union was established. Up to this time, all rugby took place in the Suva-Nausori area. A union statement made it clear why: “It is very difficult to establish the game outside Suva because almost every suitable ground already has a concrete cricket pitch at the centre.”

1938 : Fijians played in boots for the first time in honour of the first New Zealand Maori team to visit Fiji. There was still a tendency to take off boots during the match and throw them to touch-line. On the five-match tour, the Maori beat Fiji 2nd XV and Fiji Europeans before squaring the three-Test series.

1939 : Fiji toured New Zealand for the first time. With many players still preferring to play barefoot, the Fijians played with a care-free spirit, romancing the crowds with their unpredictable running game. Incredibly, they also created history by becoming the first team to go through a full tour of New Zealand unbeaten, winning seven and drawing one, a record that stands to this day.

The last match of that tour saw the tourists outclass the Maoris 14-4 in Hamilton, and had the Waikato Times newspaper running out of superlatives for the Fijian style of rugby, calling it “the most brilliant exhibition of football seen in Hamilton for many years.”

“Almost uncanny in handling the ball, lightning in the pace of their sprinting, relentless in their dive tackling…and all the time pursuing methods of bright, open football, the Fijians gave a sparkling display and thrilled the large crowd.”

The paper went on to suggest that “Fiji is destined to play a big part in world rugby,” unaware of course that it would the abbreviated seven-a-side code that Fiji would eventually rule as their own.

1945 : The Native Rugby Union had ceased to exist, and by 1953 Fiji and Suva had separate unions.

1951 : Fiji’s second tour of New Zealand: Played 15, won 8, drew 2. lost 5.

1952 : Fiji’s first tour of Australia helps the Australian Rugby Union recover from the brink of bankruptcy. The Test series is drawn 1-1 in front of record crowds.

1954 : The second tour of Australia again sees record crowds. The Test series is drawn 1-1.

1957 : Fiji tour New Zealand again and beat the Maoris in Dunedin and Wellington, then defeat a strong Auckland team 38-17.

1963 : The Fiji Rugby Football Union is renamed Fiji Rugby Union, administering by 1971, 750 clubs and 10,000 players in 300 islands over 100,000 square miles of the Pacific.

1964 : Fiji tour Europe for the first time, and lose narrowly to Wales 28-22 in a classic encounter that was talked about for years.

1970 : A rampant Fijian side destroy the Barbarians 29-9 at Gosforth.

1973 : FRU president, Ratu Sir Penaia Ganilau, warned: “There is room for a great deal of work in improving grounds and other facilities… administration is a constant problem in many unions and I would like to see more former players putting their backs into the task… the standard of refereeing has fallen since Independence and clearly the Union will need to pay special attention to this… coaching too is in need of this… only a determined drive to eliminate weakness and build on strengths can confirm Fiji as a world power in rugby.”

1974 : A last-minute try sees New Zealand safely through 14-13 over Fiji in Suva.

1977 : At the second Hong Kong Sevens, Fiji triumph in the final over Marlborough 28-18. Fiji beat the British Lions at Buckhurst Park More

1982 : Fiji beat Vancouver XV to begin a 15-match winning streak through to 1984.

1984 : Fiji destroy New Zealand 26-0 in the final of the Hong Kong Sevens.

1987 : The first World Cup sees Fiji reach the quarter-finals but bow out to France.

1991 : Fiji beat Zinzan Brooke’s New Zealand in the final of the Hong Kong Sevens after the most amazing try in the tournament’s history, underlining the incredible flair that Fijians have for the short code.

1991 : The second World Cup is a disaster for Fiji as they lose all three pool games and come home early and embarrassed.

1992 : Fiji beat New Zealand again in the final of the Hong Kong Sevens to make it three titles in a row.

1995 : Fiji fail to qualify for the World Cup.

1999 : Abysmal refereeing from Kiwi Paddy O’Brien sees Fiji lose 28-19 to France in Toulouse in the World Cup.

2000 : Fiji host an IRB 7s tournament in Suva but fell 31-5 to the Eric Rush led New Zealand side.

2001 : Fiji are crowned Pacific Rim champions, defeating Samoa 28-17 in the final in Tokyo.

2003 : ‘Bua Bullet’ Rupeni Caucau dazzled the crowds at the World Cup in Australia but Fiji were not able to make top eight after losing 22-20 to Scotland in the decider.

2005 : Fiji, coached by Wayne Pivac, beat 7s powerhouses Argentina (22-14), Australia (31-5), England (24-19) before outplaying New Zealand to win 24-19 and claim the 2005 7s World Cup in Hong Kong. A star is born in William Ryder, who played for PWD Bure in Lautoka with the 7s WC being his international debut.

2006 : The Digicel Fiji 7s team dethrone NZ as IRB World 7s Series title holders for the first time in six seasons with 144 points at the top of the IRB standings, 22 points clear of second placed England.

2006 : Fiji women play their first-ever Test match. In the opening match of the inaugural Pacific Tri-Nations for women, the Fijiana went down 15-27 to Samoa. They turned the tables to crush Tonga 52-5.

Back in history: Visei – Fiji rugby’s delight

Listen to this article:

fiji rugby tour 1970

Josaia Visei, a Viseisei villager from Vuda, was a former Fiji rugby international who was regarded as one of the best running fullbacks in the world.

An article on Visei was published in The Fiji Times on February 4, 1977. He was praised by the British press for his attacking rugby and was one of the key players in the 1970 tour of the British Isles.

Before that, he delighted rugby fans in New Zealand for his brilliant play, particularly to change defence into attacks.

Visei played well at fullback and first five-eighth but at times played behind the scrum for his club, Vuda, in the Lautoka competition.

Since he made his first appearance for Fiji in July, 1970 in the New Zealand tour, he was always the first choice at fullback. He had the ability to sneak in narrow gaps and create openings when backing up any passing move. He toured the UK in October, 1970 and two years later, was back with the Fiji side for the Tongan tour.

In Tonga, he played at first five-eighth in the first Test and at fullback for the remaining two Tests to prove his ability.

Although he was not a good goal kicker, he set up scoring moves and impressed New Zealand fans in his second tour of the country in 1974. Visei improved on his defence in New Zealand where he took some heavy tackles.

Visei’s second tour of the British Isles was in 1973. Although the tour was not a success, he proved himself as one of the experienced players in the side.

At home, he played against the Tongans, the Australians and the New Zealand Maoris. Visei was also part of the Fiji side which played against the Irish International side at Buckhurst Park.

In that match, Visei showed plenty of experience and courage to stop some of the big names in the Ireland team.

Visei played a major role in the Fijian side which almost upset the touring team.

fiji rugby tour 1970

All our yesterdays: 1970 – When Fiji came to Newcastle

Whilst Newcastle has worked hard to establish itself as a ‘rugby city’, visits from international teams in the amateur era were few and far between, and it is remarkable therefore that the old Northumberland County Ground in Gosforth hosted two international sides in 1970.

The North East Counties XV played host to the touring Springboks in early January in a match played under tight security to deter anti-apartheid protesters, but on October 24 the ground witnessed one of the biggest shocks in world rugby when the Barbarians played Fiji in front of the BBC Rugby Special cameras.

The Barbarians team comprised 15 full internationals nine of whom would tour New Zealand with the British Lions the following summer.

This was Fiji’s first ever tour to England, and when the party arrived in London in early October dressed in blazers and calf-length skirts their coach announced that their play would be as unorthodox as their dress.

He said: “We keep on running. It suits our style of play not to get too involved in rucking, although of course we place as much emphasis as all rugby teams on possession from set pieces. My players are so devoted to attack that there will be no going back on our methods, even if we are narrowly in front with just a few minutes left.”

The party was hampered by the lack of a recognised goalkicker, and early signs were not auspicious. A convincing victory over Devon and Cornwall (17-3) was followed by a draw against Midland Counties (16-16), victory over NW.Counties and then a defeat (6-14) to a North Eastern Counties XV including Gosforth’s Dave Parker and Roger Uttley.

Pre-match ticket sales went well. With no internet sales in those days, members of the public wishing to buy tickets could obtain them from Stan Seymour’s sports shop on the corner of Market Street and Pilgrim Street. All seats had been sold by October 19, but standing tickets could still be purchased for eight shillings (40p in new money) and four shillings (20p).

Both teams arrived in Newcastle on the evening of the 22nd. Whilst the Fijians trained on the Friday morning, the Baa Baas played golf, although they did hold their sole training session in the afternoon at Northern.

The match itself, played in front of a packed house, exceeded all expectations.

After a first half which did little to set the pulse racing saw the teams turn around at 3-3, the tourists ran amok creating carnage almost every time they had the ball. They played fifteen-man rugby in its truest sense, running in six second-half tries all from open play.

Some of the most impressive running came from the tight forwards displaying impressive athleticism and handling skill which drew comparisons with the famous Harlem Globetrotters basketball team. The space they created enabled the majority of the tries to be scored sufficiently close to the posts to ensure that four of the tries were converted, leaving the final score at 29-9.

To put that in perspective, under today’s points scoring that would equate to 43-13 in the humbling of one of the strongest teams ever assembled in the UK.

Pot-match praise for the tourists was suitably effusive. The Journal’s rugby correspondent, John Pargeter, wrote: “It is doubtful if any tourists to this country have ever captured the imagination of the rugby-playing fraternity – let alone the general public – as have the Fijians. Their carefree tactics, sometimes described as fanciful, exuberant and more like the Harlem Globetrotters, are in complete contrast to the dedicated drilling of British sides which is making them more and more stereotyped.”

The Northumberland President Telford Moralee said: “I don’t think we will ever see anything like it again. It was absolutely wonderful rugby, and short of completely closing up the whole game, I don’t know what the counter is. Their attacks came from all angles. Their front five in the pack were marvellous, and their display can do nothing but good for the game.”

Other commentators made a plea for the domestic sides to adopt a similar approach to playing the game. In a follow-up piece to his match report, Pargeter asked: “Is this the trend England should take and not to pattern play on the all-powerful All Blacks, with everything hinging on a pack smothering the finer points of the game which, after all, was started…..by William Webb-Ellis who RAN with the ball in his hands? Kicking has killed rugby as a spectator sport…”

Sadly, it was not to be. The tourists could not replicate this performance and lost several of their remaining tour matches as opponents realised that the ‘counter’ to this style of play was simply to deny the Fijians possession. The reality is that this type of performance is only possibility when playing against opponents who are intent on playing in the same way, as were the Baa Baas.

Happily, highlights of the BBC’s coverage of the game can still be viewed on You Tube by [**clicking here**][1] for the shorter package, or [**here**][2] for the extended version.

**The teams that day were as follows:**

**Barbarians:** JPR Williams (Wales); ATA Duggan (Ireland); JS Spencer (England); DJ Duckham (England); P.Bennett (Wales); GO Edwards (Wales); PJ O’Callaghan (Ireland); FA Laidlaw (Scotland); DB Llewellyn (Wales); WD Thomas (Wales); A.M.Davies (England); R.J. Arneil (Scotland); JF Slattery (Ireland); R.Quinnell (Wales).

**Fiji:** J.Visei; R.Latilevu; S.Nasave; K.Latilevu; P.Tikoisuva; K.Nalatu; G.Barley; I. Batibasaga; J.Sovan; J.Nacabaluva; A.Racike; J.Quoro; N.Ravovou; S.Toga; I.Tuisese.

The referee was Mr TFE Grierson from the Scottish Rugby Football Union.

The Fijian winger, Pio Bosco Tikoisuva, went on the play in 19 tests for Fiji. Following the 1970 tour he was recruited by Harlequins and went to play for the Barbarians in matches against Leicester and France. In 2001 he became the first professional CEO of the Fijian Rugby Union and in 2008 he was appointed High Commissioner for Fiji in London.

The Fijian connection with Newcastle has of course been re-established in recent years with a number of Fijian internationals, most notably Vereniki Goneva, Josh Matavesi, Tevita ‘Tex’ Cavubati and Nemani Nagusa, all plying their trade at Kingston Park.

JPR Williams, one of the most famous players to wear the red of Wales, was no stranger to the North East, having played in the Northumberland Tennis Championships in each of the previous two years.

As for the old County Ground in Gosforth, it is of course no more. Having begun life as the Gosforth Cycling Grounds and at one stage operating as the County Athletics Ground, it hosted greyhound racing between 1932 and 1987, one of three licensed Dog Tracks in the city.

It is not entirely clear when the Northumberland Rugby Union acquired the site. The pitch and dog track were surrounded by covered grandstands offering a mix of seated and standing accommodation. A brick pavilion was built to incorporate dressing rooms and offices, and latterly a bar. Northern and Gosforth played their home fixtures on the ground until 1937 and 1955 respectively, but thereafter its rugby use was limited to a handful of representative games and county cup finals.

Pitch maintenance was pretty basic, with the grass grown long and frost protection consisting of a generous covering of straw.

With the loss of income from the dog racing the decision was made to sell the ground in 1988, and the stadium was demolished to make way for the ASDA supermarket that stands on the site today. The sale proceeds of approximately £2.5m were eventually invested in a series of trusts for the benefit of rugby in the county, with the income from the invested capital being used to complement the central funding available to clubs and constituent bodies from other sources.

Courtney Lawes’ tour de force made Leinster sweat and proved he is still England’s main man

T o muster a meaningful bid for victory at Croke Park, or even to make Leinster sweat, it always felt as though Northampton Saints would need a tour de force from Courtney Lawes. Fortunately for them, such performances have been fairly regular over the past two years or so.

That Saints defied a dire first quarter to come within three points of their hosts, eventually going down 20-17 , was testament to a few factors. They are a resilient, well-coached team that trust their approach. Rather than panicking from 20-3 behind, Northampton stayed calm and steadily chipped away at Leinster.

Starters Juarno Augustus, Fraser Dingwall and Tommy Freeman settled in and asserted themselves. Replacements Elliot Millar Mills, Angus Scott-Young and Tom James added energy off the bench. And Lawes delivered another colossal display, single-handedly dragging the game’s momentum towards his team on numerous occasions.

For the first 32 minutes, Northampton looked terribly timid. Anxious handling errors and frantic decision-making crippled them. Following a penalty from Ross Byrne on the half-hour mark, Northampton chased Fin Smith’s restart too early. Saints were penalised from the ensuing scrum. That allowed Leinster, leading 15-0, to enter the opposition 22 and press for a score that would have surely killed off the contest.

Their powerful yet intricate phase-play caused Saints to creak before Lawes pounced, earning a breakdown penalty out of Mathieu Raynal and, at last, giving his side a foothold. Jackalling, among the most valuable skills in the modern game, is the latest asset that Lawes has bolted onto his inventory.

His remarkable career has been one of constant evolution. He arrived as a dynamic athlete who could jump in the line-out and tackle destructively before working on his footwork to become an effective ball-carrier and, finally, an elite breakdown scavenger.

Lawes’ standing is such that you can chart those latter two by British and Irish Lions tours. In the second and third Tests of 2017, he cut incisive angles to puncture New Zealand’s defensive line.

Four years later, Lawes started all three games against the Springboks and his jackalling characterised a claustrophobic series. Andy Farrell was in the crowd on Saturday. He must have wondered how the 2025 Lions could accommodate Lawes, who intends to be available for the trip to Australia despite moving to Brive this summer . What else is there for the veteran to improve upon?

Flashes of class cropped up throughout Saturday afternoon. Lawes nabbed a second turnover early in the final quarter, in the wake of Byrne’s elementary miss from the tee. Moments previously, Northampton had scored through George Hendy. These three events in quick succession swelled Northampton’s belief and introduced jitters to Leinster’s game.

With seven minutes remaining, Lawes rose to gather a line-out and milked a penalty by dummying a pass from the top of his jump. Several Leinster forwards were foxed and crept offside. Lawes’ cerebral side can be underestimated, but he has long led strategy meetings and this was a cute play as the pressure was intensifying. Soon enough, Tom Seabrook was over in the corner.

Raynal’s general refereeing of the breakdown – in short, he allows a contest – means it is far better to ask for forgiveness than permission. This can spook English teams, because Premiership officials have a reputation for wanting quick, clean rucks. Lawes will have known about Raynal’s habits from the World Cup quarter-final against Fiji six months ago, in which he and Maro Itoje rolled up their sleeves for a ferocious breakdown battle.

On Saturday, in the last five minutes, Leinster attempted to run down the clock with a prolonged passage of phase-play around the Saints 22. Lawes was relentless, tracking the ball and burrowing into at least four or five rucks. He reached over prone bodies, hoping to accentuate attackers diving off their feet. Leinster looked rattled. They grew narrow and scruffy, and eventually coughed up possession.

Northampton countered and almost picked off a scrambling defence. A winning try would have sparked debate over Saints’ greatest-ever victories. Lawes surely ranks among the club’s best players ever. Steve Borthwick and Felix Jones, two more Croke Park spectators, would probably attest that he remains the most accomplished operator in England. Ben Earl has had a superb year, yet Lawes has been bubbling around the ‘world-class’ bracket since England’s tour to Australia in 2022. When it comes to the consistent excellence and influence, he is unmatched. The Leinster game unequivocally demonstrated that international retirement has not compromised his ability to mix it with adversaries like Caelan Doris.

Lawes is spoken about with genuine reverence

Last week, in an appearance on ‘For the Love of Rugby’, a podcast fronted by Dan Cole and Ben Youngs, Lawes discussed his development in a casual yet insightful tone. Cole described him as “a complete back-rower” who “does everything to a nine-out-10 standard”. Youngs added that Lawes now possesses four “points of difference” – his line-out jumping, his tackling, his carrying and his jackalling – while exuding the aura of a special leader . The co-hosts, fellow England centurions, both spoke with genuine reverence.

Interestingly, Eddie Jones was cited as the spur for Lawes to improve in the carrying stakes, the latter acknowledging that he had been “pretty one-dimensional for a few years”. A straightforward drill, with Lawes gathering passes on the run and stepping past a post, aided this progression. As for jackalling, Lawes explained that squatting and other lifting exercises have built confidence while making him strong enough to withstand clearers and ward off knee injuries.

“You learn that you can do [improve] anything, really, as long as you have the attributes to do it,” Lawes said, perhaps downplaying both his talent and what has been a hugely impressive process of reinvention.

The rest of the interview, spread over two episodes, touched upon various topics. It broached Lawes’ transition from lightweight lock to blindside flanker as well as contract negotiations and how players in their mid-30s manage their bodies. Lawes picked two colleagues for a fantasy back row, landing upon Samu Manoa and Ben Earl and admitting his excitement at that prospect. Intriguingly, there was a short section on Ollie Chessum. Lawes suggested that the Leicester Tiger, 12 years his junior, is a similar profile of athlete and may end up in the back row.

Lawes retired from internationals after his phenomenal World Cup, a tournament in which Borthwick placed significant stock in older craftsmen such as Cole and Joe Marler. Replacing Lawes is more difficult because of how many bases he covered for England. On ‘For the Love of Rugby’, Lawes himself reiterated the importance of fielding three polished line-out jumpers in a pack. Borthwick blooded Ethan Roots at the beginning of the Six Nations and then handed the No 6  jersey to Chessum, who started behind a lock partnership of Itoje and George Martin. The latter trio were integral to a rollicking win over Ireland.

In the longer term, candidates such as Chandler Cunningham-South and Ted Hill will come into contention. For any of them to enjoy long Test careers, though, they will have to hone different areas as Lawes has done. Cunningham-South, for example, is a bopping carrier who is targeting line-out improvements.

Northampton will be itching to send off Lawes with a Premiership title. They will continue to improve as a side, especially as their backs mature. Sam Vesty, their head coach, gave an interview to TNT Sports during the error-strewn first half on Saturday. He seemed calm, simply stating that the squad would figure it out among themselves. The second period vindicated Vesty. And yet, Saints will also know that with Lawes, Lewis Ludlam and Alex Moon all due to depart, they are losing valuable personnel. This season is a big chance for silverware.

“Why stop here?” was the question Lawes asked himself as he added carrying and jackalling to his arsenal. “I want to push to be one of the best players in the world and leave a legacy behind.”

Whether or not he lands a trophy to end his time with Northampton, Lawes has certainly achieved that. There has been an element of fortune in how his body has held up, but he has earned that luck. Lawes will leave for Brive as an inspiration for any player – young and old – who wonder what is possible if they graft to improve their game.
