Excursion Rear Entertainment System w/ Aftermarket HU

So I bought my Excursion almost a month ago and it came with the RES. Like most others on here I couldn't figure out how to get it to work with an aftermarket headunit but after some research on trial I have it working and wanted to help out everyone else. The square factory connector is the one with the power and audio wires for the RES. The two most important wires are the green/black and solid black, the green/black goes gets connected to the accesory power wire and the black goes to ground. This in itself will allow you to watch the dvd but the IR headphones must be used. Now to the audio, these are setup to act like RCA cables, each side has a positive and a negative. Most new headunits have auxilary inputs that use RCA inputs so I put RCA connectors on the end of the factor wires. For the audio wires: light green/red - left dvd audio out (-) violet - left audio in (+) orange/black - right audio out (-) grey - right audio in (+) From this I had one RCA connector with light green/violet and then another with orange/ black and grey. From there it is just a matter of turning the headunit to the proper input and it worked. Once I found the wire color codes it only took me about an hour to actually wire it up and most of that time was spent untangling the previous owners mess. I hope this helps anyone that is having this issue out, if you have any questions I'll answer the best I can.

I will add any other findings when I do my install once I get mine back.

Still waiting to get the Ex back from the shop, I get it today or Monday. Even if I did get it today I would not be able to start the install till next Friday with appointments, hockey tournaments and work. Sorry bout the long wait, life got in the way of all my fun. I will post when I do start the job, I am waiting for some of the install components to come in the mail from ebay.  

any news on the install?  

A seller on Ebay sent the wrong harness so I had to wait for a local shop to get one. I have it in my hands (Metra 70-5520AV), I am going to start soldering wires and doing the install. There will be a final answer tonight.  

I got it done. I did like the OP said and wired up the RCA's properly and ran keyed power to the Green/Black wire from the same 20 pin harness. What had me worried was looking at the factory service manual wiring diagrams the +'s for the rear speakers were labeled for the RES control panel. After looking further into the wiring diagrams the +'s for the rear speakers go thru the control panel and split up there for the middle and rear speakers. I ended up using the Scosche FD16B speaker wiring harness, Metra 95-5817 dash kit and Axxess ASWC steering control interface. The ASWC is just awesome I had to run keyed power, ground and steering control wire from the same 20 pin harness to get it hooked up and working. It auto detected the Excursion's steering controls and the Clarion deck as soon as it powered up, YES no programming like the PAC SWI-JACK! Also as a side note when I used the Scosche wiring harness the dimmer positive and dimmer negative are opposite of what they should be. There was some trimming I had to do with my rotary tool to get the deck to fit but nothing major, 5 minutes at the max. I spent more time looking for the darn tool than I did using it!  

What did the Axxess run you and where did you get it?  

Oh yeah, the deck I installed was a Clarion NX500 and also put in Sirius satellite tuner (Sirius SCC1) that hooks directly to the Clarion.  

Are you now able to listen to one thing in the back like dvd and stereo/cd up front?  

Is the head unit you installed also a dvd player? Where are the headphones getting their IR signal from?  

Yes it plays dvd's,cd's (audio & mp3/wma), Sirius sat radio, HD radio, ipod/iphone, bluetooth and usb. The IR signal comes from the rear DVD player. Do you have the remote for the rear DVD player? Some movies won't play without the remote for some odd reason.  

Ive got an 03 Ex and the guys at Mobile One are telling me there is no IR from the dvd player so headphones wont work...and no, I dont have the remote...original owner must have lost it.  

That seems odd, I was under the impression that they all used IR headphones. I would go to a Ford dealer with your vin and ask the partsperson for headphones for your Ex and see what comes up. That would be a total PIA having to run wired headphones thru the whole thing. I guess they do make a IR unit that plugs into a jack and broadcasts an IR signal. I would find out about the headsets before buying a separate IR unit.  

Yeah I'd call BS on there not being an IR signal for the headphones. Like tuckman said you can find them on ebay brand new for a reasonable price so if you're willing to buy a set and give it a try it may be worth it.  

I looked up the part # here for the headphoens and it looks like they are wireless. OE Parts Megastore - Discount Genuine Orignal Equipment Auto Parts Does your 05 have headphone plug in's as well?

It is even if the manual doesn't state it. Does your manual have a page about the wireless headphones? If it does it is the same as mine, it just says wireless headphones. At the back of the center console there is the rear control panel with all the buttons and headphone jacks.  

Yeah, nothing in my manual about wireless headphones. Gonna have to look for a IR transponder and see if it can be wired in I guess  

Why not go to a dealership and ask if they have any of the wireless headphones and then see if they work...if they would let you use them for a couple minutes.  

Yes sir. Mine is completely without IR. Now i may be able to hook up an IR transponder or something. Ive got the dvd player working now and the kids can watch a video while on a roadtrip, which Im taking today, but have to listen to it through the main speakers... Working to see if an IR transponder can be attached.

:bump: Any new news? I have an 05 that has no ent system installed, it's a pretty stripped model, but was thinking on adding seat back video displays to the backs of both of the front seats, so each kid could have their own little world going on a long trip. The overhead one is of course also an option, but I would need to find a wrecked Eddie Bauer or Limited with the whole shebang and transfer it over to my unit. No way I would buy all the needed bits and pieces from the dealer, I'd be broke long before I got it all together. I presume the 2nd systems you're referring to are the overhead units like the factory ones? If you were in my place, would you do the seat back setup or the overhead dual? I don't need to integrate a nav system, my garmin is fine for me, it's more about keeping the kids entertained, and as one is 18 and the other almost 5, there is a serious difference in viewing tastes going on here. Thanks for any suggestions, I'd love to have this figured out before we start heading out for our summer camping trips.  

I got IR installed aftermarket. Much better now. As far as video in the seat headrests. I was told I couldn't do it with mine because they were all one piece or something of that nature. As far as your kids go, with one being 18 already I would question how long are they really gonna be riding around with you on trips? another 6 months maybe? I would concentrate on the young one and keeping them entertained with a drop down screeen. Most 18yr olds still dig on Finding Nemo or any other Disney movie as well. You can buy an aftermarket dvd system and install it from just about anywhere these days. Best Buy, Mobile One, Frye's...

I had the same issue. I just found a screen that fit in the factory bezel and another DVD player that fit in the factory spot and hooked them up. It looks pretty good.  

I just bought an alpine HU with USB in front and my wife let me know the RES stopped working. It powers on but the video to the display no longer works - accepts and ejects dvds and audio isn't coming over speakers. So I realized that there must be a wiring issue somewhere. I haven't pulled anything apart yet but started doing some research into this issue. I have come across this video which I have found particularily helpful. I'm probably going to do the wiring changes for the display power and grounding, hopefully that is all I need to do. I don't really care about the rear audio controls for the kids, nor do I particularily care about having their audio pumped throughout the entire excursion. We got them new IR headphones from Audio2go.com for $30 a pair. If I can do a few splices and solder connections I'll be a happy camper. Should have an idea tomorrow what works or doesn't.

There is another possibility for wiring up the RES and remote volume controls without cutting into the factory harness. I need to get my notes from my install this weekend, and write up some more details for whomever interested, but the short answer is that the PAC Audio PXHFD3 harness can be adapted to provide the steering wheel wire, the RES power-on, and the audio from the RES to go into your aftermarket head unit's aux-in. hmmm, interesting. i no longer have my excursion so i'm not worried about it at this point but you may want to put it up for others  

Wish there was a way to upgrade the DVD player so it was Blue Ray compatible and swap in a larger fold down screen. Sent from my Autoguide iPad app

Excursion steering wheel radio controls

I've considered upgrading the factory stereo in my '02 Excursion. I was interested in replacing it with the Pyle PLDTVN65. http://akamai.edeal.com/images/catalog1910/folder5552/img634110.jpg My chief concern is that its possible that I would loose the steering wheel pushbuttons which controls the volume and advances the CD audio tracks. Is there a modification available that would make these functions work with the upgraded system? Thanks in advance, Tim  

Yes, as long as the headunit has a infared remote you can use the PAC SWI-X steering wheel interface: http://www.pac-audio.com/products/swi.htm I'm upgrading my factory headunit next week to the Eclipse AVN5495 & will be using the SWI-X. You also don't lose the steering wheel A/C functions if your truck has them.  

I have replaced my factory headunit long ago and have been using the SWI-X and it works great. I have an alpine so you don't even need the IR port. It just plugs into the back of the receiver. The only complaint I have with the system is there is a slight delay. You get used to it and it works great. I would hate to lose the controls. The SWI-X is worth the money for sure.

• Page 11 Instrument Cluster Brake system warning light: To confirm the brake system warning light is functional, it will momentarily illuminate when the ignition is turned to the ON position when the engine is not running, or in a position between ON and START, or by applying the parking brake when the ignition is turned to the ON position.
• Page 12 Instrument Cluster Low fuel: Illuminates when the fuel level in the fuel tank is at, or near empty (refer to Fuel gauge in this chapter). Speed control: Illuminates when the speed control is activated. Turns off when the speed control system is deactivated.

• Page 14 Instrument Cluster Engine coolant temperature gauge: Indicates engine coolant temperature. At normal operating temperature, the needle will be in the normal range (between “H” and “C”). If it enters the red section, the engine is overheating. Stop the vehicle as soon as safely possible, switch off the engine and let the engine cool.
• Page 15 Instrument Cluster Engine oil pressure gauge: Indicates engine oil pressure. The needle should stay in the normal operating range (between “L” and “H”). If the needle falls below the normal range, stop the vehicle, turn off the engine and check the engine oil level.
• Page 16 If the gauge is operating in the Yellow or Red area, stop the vehicle and verify the airflow is not restricted such as snow or debris blocking airflow through the grill. If the gauge continues to show high temperatures, see your Ford or Lincoln Mercury dealer.

2003 For Expedition (Eddie Bauer Edition) Radio replacement

I recently purchased a 2003 Ford Expedition and My wife would really like to have; blue tooth, Navigation, and a backup Camera in the car like in the newer vehicles. I'm no stranger to electronics and radio replacements, but it's been a LONG time. I'm also concerned about loosing functionality with a replacement, it has the CD changer in the center console and a rear middle seat over dead DVD player that I'd like to not lose the functionality they provide. So I thought I would come here and get some advice from folks who know the vehicle model well. First, It seems that the radio is a Dual DIN sized radio from my research. (Yes, it's been a LONG time since I did a radio replacement.) My concern is how the inputs come back from the CD Changer and the DVD. Then the control of the radio/CD/Changer/DVD from the steering wheel. The interface and connectors basically have me swimming. Basically, is there such an animal of a replacement where no functionality will be lost?

This one can do most: Android 4 4 Quad Core 2Din 7inch Car Stereo GPS Navigation 1024x600 2G RAM | eBay But the rear seat control panel on the center console will not work. The CD changer will also not be compatible, but the DVD screen should be able to function with it. It's not plug and play, so it requires you find or make your own adapters..  

I did a radio replacement in my 05. I lost the controls for the rear overhead DVD but that was not a big deal for me. They can control it back there. It won't play sound through the speakers either but I have headphones. Mine is an XLT so I didn't have many options. I didn't have to worry about steering wheel controls and such. I did have to buy a harness and install kit for a double DIN. I am looking at replacing my AVIC-D3 and saw some decently priced Pioneer Bluetooth App radios out there.

as said...you will lose functions until u use the appropriate harnesses/wiring to get them back...you can get steering wheel controls back...there is an overhead harness that a lot of ppl have used and I only remember a couple ppl dealing with the changer...but it can all be done
