2013 Dodge Journey Review

KBB Editors

Updated December 23, 2019

If your growing family demands a vehicle with minivan-like proportions, but you don’t want a minivan, check out the 2013 Dodge Journey. With its available V6, 7-passenger seating and AWD, the Journey can handle most of what fits into a traditional minivan and still maintain its less-bland SUV-like appeal.

While the Dodge Journey can fit seven passengers, it’s not as roomy or comfortable as a larger GMC Acadia or Honda Pilot. The standard 4-cylinder engine contributes to the Journey’s low base price, but in that form it’s noisy and underpowered.

What's New?

For 2013, the Dodge Journey gets more equipment added to its various trims but with no price increase. AVP and SE trims get new 17-inch wheels, while the R/T models have a $1,000 price drop. New standard features on the Crew trim include leather seating, heated steering wheel and heated front seats.

The 2013 Dodge Journey maintains its mid-size crossover SUV vehicle status, offering room for up to seven passengers, but with pricing and fuel economy figures on par with smaller SUVs, such as the Honda CR-V and Subaru Forester. In terms of quality and design, the Journey’s interior is a cut above most, full of high-end features and clever storage compartments demanded by families on the go. In the second row of seats are under-floor storage compartments, while the front passenger-seat bottom lifts to reveal more storage space. But the best part of the 2013 Journey is its available V6, which we think is one of the most powerful, smooth-running and fuel-efficient V6 engines on the market.

Used 2013 Dodge Journey Pricing

The Kelley Blue Book Fair Purchase Price for any individual used vehicle can vary greatly according to mileage, condition, location, and other factors, but here's a general idea of what buyers are currently paying for used 2013 Dodge Journey models when purchasing from a dealership.

For reference, the 2013 Dodge Journey originally had a starting sticker price of $19,990, with the range-topping Journey R/T Sport Utility 4D starting at $29,990.

Driving the Used 2013 Dodge Journey

Although the 2013 Dodge Journey might look as though it would ride and handle like a tall SUV, the feeling we experienced seemed more in keeping with a well-mannered wagon. Dodge has given the Journey a very taut suspension that absorbs most road irregularities without complaint, yet is still stiff enough to keep the Journey from rolling and bobbing on windy roads. Passengers in the front and second-row had nothing but praise for their accommodations, but those in the third row agreed it was best suited for small children. As for power, we found that Journey’s standard 2.4-liter 4-cylinder engine didn’t exhibit much performance, even when moving a light load. For overall performance and peace of mind, we’d recommend going with the Pentastar V6. The 3.6-liter Pentastar is one of the best V6 engines ever produced by Dodge, and may even rank as one of the best V6 engines of all time.

Interior Comfort

Step into a Journey Crew or R/T trim and you’ll find various interior color choices in rich fabrics or plush leather. Soft-touch surfaces abound, and the big 8.4-inch touch-screen audio system, featuring the Uconnect suite of communication and connectivity options, is one of the best, most intuitive systems available. On the versatility front, the 2013 Dodge Journey mid-size SUV features a flush-folding third-row seat and second-row seats that can slide fore-and-aft (making access to the third-row seat a bit easier). Upper-level trims also have a flat-folding front seat that increases the cargo floor right up to the dashboard.

Exterior Styling

As mid-size SUVs go, Dodge’s 2013 Journey is on the larger side of the scale. Its tall stance and long profile give it the look of a big wagon, similar to the old Chrysler Pacifica. The Journey is so long, in fact, that it dwarfs the Toyota RAV4 and Ford Escape by nearly 10 inches. To keep the exterior from looking too much like a bland family wagon, Dodge has dressed it up with a chrome-trimmed crosshair grille, flashy alloy wheel choices and, on V6 models, a more aggressive lower air intake. The R/T trim takes things up another notch with a monochromatic exterior, 19-inch wheels and R/T badging.

Favorite Features

FLIP ‘N STOW STORAGE The 2013 Dodge Journey’s front passenger-seat cushion flips forward to expose a big storage bin that can hide valuables from prying eyes, or just keep things in place.

UCONNECT 8.4-INCH NAVIGATION RADIO Highlights include voice-activated controls for the Bluetooth, navigation, audio and iPod, as well as "Eco-Route" guidance and song tagging. There’s even a subscription option to Sirius Travel Link, which can provide updates for traffic, find the cheapest gasoline prices, report on sports scores and weather conditions and even give movie times.

Standard Features

Standard equipment on the 2013 Dodge Journey includes a 2.4-liter 4-cylinder engine and 4-speed automatic transmission, power heated side mirrors, three 12-volt outlets, a 4.3-inch touch-screen AM/FM radio with a single-CD player, an audio input jack and USB port, keyless entry, push-button start, 17-inch wheels, second-row in-floor storage and a covered storage bin in the rear cargo area. All models feature electronic traction and stability control, anti-lock brakes, front-seat side airbags, and 3-row side-curtain airbags.

Factory Options

Beyond the base Dodge Journey for 2013, there are four other Dodge Journey trims: SE, SXT, Crew and R/T. The 283-horsepower, 3.6-liter V6 engine and 6-speed automatic transmission are offered on the SXT and standard on Crew and R/T trims. Options vary by trim and include all-wheel drive, UConnect Hands-free Communication network, leather seating surfaces, ParkView rearview camera, ParkSense parking assist, navigation, a power moonroof, six premium speakers with subwoofer and 368-watt amplifier, third-row seating, rear-seat DVD entertainment system, 17- and 19-inch wheels, 3-zone automatic air conditioning, Tilt ‘n Slide second-row seats, Flip ‘n Stow compartment, a heated steering wheel and heated front seats.

Engine & Transmission

Engineered for commuting and good gasoline mileage, the 173-horsepower, 2.4-liter, 4-cylinder engine in the 2013 Dodge Journey provides adequate power when lightly loaded. But bigger loads and the AWD system demand the potent 3.6-liter Pentastar V6, which pumps out 283 horsepower and is not only the engine many people will want, it’s the one we recommend. Coupled to a 6-speed automatic transmission, the 3.6-liter V6 never fails to deliver power when asked and, once up to speed, keeps the Journey moving with remarkable fuel efficiency. The Journey’s V6 is also E85-compatible.

2.4-liter inline-4 173 horsepower @ 6,000 rpm 166 lb-ft of torque @ 4,400 rpm EPA city/highway fuel economy: 19/26 mpg

3.6-liter V6 283 horsepower @ 6,350 rpm 260 lb-ft of torque @ 4,400 rpm EPA city/highway fuel economy: 17/25 mpg (front-wheel drive), 12/18 mpg (front-wheel drive, E85) 16/24 mpg (all-wheel drive)

KBB Vehicle Review and Rating Methodology

Our Expert Ratings come from hours of both driving and number crunching to make sure that you choose the best car for you. We comprehensively experience and analyze every new SUV, car, truck, or minivan for sale in the U.S. and compare it to its competitors. When all that dust settles, we have our ratings.

We require new ratings every time an all-new vehicle or a new generation of an existing vehicle comes out. Additionally, we reassess those ratings when a new-generation vehicle receives a mid-cycle refresh — basically, sprucing up a car in the middle of its product cycle (typically, around the 2-3 years mark) with a minor facelift, often with updates to features and technology.

Rather than pulling random numbers out of the air or off some meaningless checklist, KBB’s editors rank a vehicle to where it belongs in its class. Before any car earns its KBB rating, it must prove itself to be better (or worse) than the other cars it’s competing against as it tries to get you to spend your money buying or leasing.

Our editors drive and live with a given vehicle. We ask all the right questions about the interior, the exterior, the engine and powertrain, the ride and handling, the features, the comfort, and of course, about the price. Does it serve the purpose for which it was built? (Whether that purpose is commuting efficiently to and from work in the city, keeping your family safe, making you feel like you’ve made it to the top — or that you’re on your way — or making you feel like you’ve finally found just the right partner for your lifestyle.)

We take each vehicle we test through the mundane — parking, lane-changing, backing up, cargo space and loading — as well as the essential — acceleration, braking, handling, interior quiet and comfort, build quality, materials quality, reliability.

2013 Dodge Journey V-6 AWD

The Journey’s about-face was nearly as dramatic as the Chrysler comeback that followed. The new Dodge crossover wasn’t just better—it was actually good. But it wasn’t until a 2013 Dodge Journey arrived at our office recently that we were able to put one through our test regimen to quantify exactly how the updates affected performance.

Stick with the Six

It’s important to note that not all Journeys have been exorcised of their pre-2011 demons. The Journey’s base powertrain is an anemic 2.4-liter four-cylinder paired with an antiquated four-speed automatic—only the lowliest front-drive trims get it. Fortunately, the upgrade is Chrysler’s well-mannered and lively 3.6-liter V-6 and a six-speed automatic. Our test model, a top-of-the-line 2013 Dodge Journey R/T, also brought a stiffened suspension, 19-inch wheels, and optional all-wheel drive. (You can’t get all-wheel drive without upgrading to the V-6.)

With 283 horsepower and 260 lb-ft of torque moving 4280 pounds of metal, the Journey feels sprightly in traffic. The V-6 only starts to come into its element around 3500 rpm, though, so you need to commit to the gas pedal to truly enjoy this engine’s best attributes—assertive power, minimal vibration, and rapidly rising revs.

It’s too bad the gearbox it’s forced to work with is so disappointing. For one, even though it’s possible to choose your own gears to keep the six-cylinder in the burliest part of its power band, the six-speed automatic’s manual shifting mode is so unintuitive and unresponsive that it’s best ignored. The transmission also has a hard time following the driver’s directions when left in drive. Under acceleration, downshifts can be slow, abrupt, or even absent, leaving the driver waiting and wondering. At least the transmission understands the drill when charging hard off the line, helping the Journey achieve 60 mph in a quick-for-the-segment 7.1 seconds. The 2013 thus hits the mark 1.2 seconds quicker than we recorded in our only test of the slovenly, prerefresh model, a 2009 Journey R/T AWD with its 235-hp, 3.5-liter SOHC V-6.

Bigger Brakes, Shorter Stops

With our skidpad blanketed in snow, we weren’t able to test lateral grip, but around town, the all-wheel-drive system and the Kumho Solus KH16 M+S tires provided all the traction we needed whether we were on snow-covered streets or sun-soaked, dry roads. At the test track, we measured the stop from 70 mph in 172 feet, a significant 17 feet shorter than the 2009 model did on the same type of tires. The difference can be attributed to larger front and rear brake rotors adopted as part of the 2011 redesign. The only mark against the Journey’s chassis is a matter of comfort. The R/T’s 19-inch wheels, 225/55 tires, and stiffened suspension make for a brittle and busy ride on rough roads. For a family crossover that’s tasked with tackling road trips rather than road circuits, it’s an inexplicable compromise. We’d shop for a Journey in SXT or Crew trim, both of which have softer suspensions.

Practicality over Performance

The late-blooming Journey’s best attribute has always been no-nonsense practicality as a family hauler, not performance. We like its pragmatic packaging in a body that’s neither too big nor too small, its ergonomically friendly and attractive interior, and its reasonable price. (Our heavily optioned R/T nears the top of the range at $34,305, but you can get its driveline for some seven grand less.) From our first drive, we knew the Journey’s update was worth every penny spent on development. Now that we’ve strapped our test equipment to the crossover, we can also state that Dodge got its money’s worth in acceleration and braking improvements.

2013 Dodge Journey Overview

A four-cylinder engine and four-speed automatic transmission are standard in the 2013 Dodge Journey. A V6 engine paired with a six-speed automatic is available. Reviewers said the base powertrain is underpowered and most preferred the V6, which they said has ample power. With front-wheel drive and the standard powertrain, the 2013 Dodge Journey gets 19/26 mpg city/highway, which is a bit low for the class. Reviewers generally said the Journey has composed handling and a comfortable ride.

The 2013 Dodge Journey can seat up to seven people with its available third row, which is rare for a small SUV. The Journey also has available features like built-in child booster seats, which help boost its family-friendly credibility. However, test drivers said that the third row is best left to children and complained that the base infotainment system can be tricky to use and has a small touch screen. Critics noted that space in the first two rows is fine for adults and that the available infotainment system with the larger touch-screen system works well. Standard features include a 4.3-inch touch-screen infotainment system with USB and auxiliary ports. Features like Bluetooth, a rear-seat entertainment system, leather upholstery, rear parking sensors, navigation, a rearview camera and an infotainment system with an 8.4-inch touch screen are available. The Journey’s overall cargo space is typical for the class.

Other SUVs to Consider

Reviewers said the 2013 Honda CR-V has the livability and practicality that most compact SUV buyers are looking for, and it has among the most overall cargo space in the class. It also comes standard with Bluetooth and a rearview camera, both of which are not standard in the Journey.

The Dodge Journey is large for a compact SUV and so is the 2013 GMC Terrain . The base Terrain gets better fuel economy than the base Journey does, and although it isn’t available with a third row, test drivers were pleased with its spacious, sliding rear seats, and it also has more standard features than the Journey.

First time Chysler buyer Ontario Canada

Hi guys: This is my 4th report on this vehicle. The car is now 10 years old and has 140,000 miles on it. Our car has the 3.6 Pentastar, 3rd row seating, 8.4 inch Uconnect system, roof racks, premium sound system, DVD player, rear air conditioning, push button start, heated seats and steering wheel, back up camera and is front wheel drive only. Engine, transmission and air conditioner have been excellent. Never a problem. 30 miles to the gallon on the highway. Many suspension components have been replaced and vehicle is starting to rust around the rear wheel well. Uconnect has had issues. All in all a very reliable and very comfortable vehicle. Highly recommend it.

Great car, very comfortable, plenty of room

I bought my 2013 journal avp brand new, and now have 123,000 miles on it. Haven't even changed brakes yet. Still original brakes on it. Just regular maintenance, had minor issues, wheel bearing, throttle body, and new battery and tires. Great car, comfortable. 4 cylinder engine is good on gas but very sluggish. Definitely would recommend V6 engine.

After purchasing used 2013 Journey SXT I had issue with starting.Would start day after setting but if didn’t start for multiple days battery was dead.Took to my mechanic and they couldn’t figure out why this was occurring and advised taking to a dealership. They ran testing for 6 weeks(ridiculous amount of time)but didn’t care if problem was fixed. They advised that they found issue and replaced an electrical control box which cost me $900.00.To my dismay I found after several days problems still exists.Called dealer and they said bring it back and they would look into problem again. When asked if I would be charged again they said yes.Highly recommend staying away from Dodge as I plan to do in the future!!

Problems starting, 1 month ownership

I recently traded in my car for the 2013 dodge journey RT and I have has nothing but problems with it. The car randomly decides it does not want to start and has left me stranded. The brakes lock up, a red light blinks, and a message pops up (service AWD. ) I have tried putting the car into neutral, and then starting it. I have tried pressing the button 5 times and restarting it. The issues does generally resolve itself, You just have to wait anywhere from 5min to 3 hours. The car just got a brand new battery, but the mechanic said it was a battery issue, apparently the voltage in the battery was fine, but it failed the battery life test. (OK) so another new battery was put in. Now I wish I never traded in my reliable vehicle. I was excited about the leather and the sunroof and the heated seats and the navigation. None of those perk are work paying for a hunk of junk you can rely on. No I am hooped I stuck with this crappy vehicle. I wish Chrysler would resolve this common issue that they have had for a very long time. I wish I had done more research before buying thus peace of shut that randomly leaves me stranded for hours on end.

Brakes! Purchased the showroom model (at a slight discount) but that was in 2013 and yes the pads are now coming due for the first time but the rotors?! Did Daimler/Chrysler make these things outta Kryptonite? Not a scar/score on 'em in 7 years and looks like all I'm gonna have to do is hit the pads. Also purchase of an extended warranty has been nothing short of a blessing in disguise! Guess one of the fortunate ones with this car purchase. Just a quick unique note, back in 2013, November time frame, purchased the car and a week after was fired from job. She's ours now and got the title in the lock box. All take care and God Bless.

2013 Dodge Journey

2013 dodge journey reviews

2013 Dodge Journey Expert Review

Staff writer.

The 2013 Dodge Journey is a midsize crossover based on the same platform as the Dodge Avenger. The Journey is one of the better picks among crossovers. It is a versatile vehicle and includes a small third-row seat while still remaining smaller than truck-based SUVs. Competitive pricing also helps keep the Journey at the top of buyers' lists. Dodge offers the journey in an American Value Package (AVP), SE, SXT, Crew, and R/T trims.

New For 2013

Just minor changes occur for 2013. Dodge drops the price of the Crew by $200 and adds premium leather along with heated front seats and steering wheel. Range-topping R/T models get a $1000 price drop plus standard perforated leather seats, a heated steering wheel, red interior stitching, and a performance suspension. All 2013 Journeys now have a max air-conditioning climate control setting.

Not quite a boxy SUV, nor a tall wagon, the 2013 Journey looks decidedly like a member of the Dodge family. It sports the distinctive crosshair grille, lower bumper styling, and flared fenders of the aggressive-looking Dodge front end. While the styling doesn't bring anything fresh to the crossover segment, at least it looks more exciting than some of its competitors. The 2013 Dodge Journey's styling should keep parents feeling more empowered and intimidating; even when they are changing diapers in the second-row seats.

For 2013, the Dodge Journey SE, previously standard with 16-inch steel wheels, features standard 17-inch alloy wheels. The R/T sports a monochromatic exterior and wears 19-inch aluminum wheels. Power heated side mirrors come standard on all Journeys.

New brilliant colors such as Bright Red, Fathom Blue Pearl, and Winter Chill Pearl are available for 2013. Also available are LED taillights, a chrome-tipped dual exhaust, and a power sunroof.

Interior & Cargo

While fit, materials, and finish fall short when compared to some competitors, the 2013 Dodge Journey doesn't entirely disappoint. The soft-touch materials found inside are built to withstand the inherent demands of hauling children, toys, and pets. All trim levels include: dual zone air-conditioning; proximity keyless entry; cruise control; USB and auxiliary input jacks; and steering-wheel audio controls. Standard lighted cup-holders lend a calming, illuminated sippy-cup effect. A three-zone air-conditioning and heating system is available on certain trims.

Front seats are wider than in some competing vehicles and should fit even larger adults. Dodge ensures that back-seat occupants also ride comfortably. Rear accommodations (second row) rank among the best in this segment, and the back seats are also contoured to fit adults. Occupants can adjust the rake of rear seatbacks, and the entire bench can slide forward and aft a few inches. The third-row seats work best for children, but young adults could, theoretically, ride in them for short trips. The Journey excels at kid carrying and cargo stowing. Optional built-in booster seats eliminate the need to bring one along for older children. An optional split second-row seat places fussy offspring within easy reach of Mom and Dad.

Dodge offers the AVP trim for families living in the "new-economy." The AVP comes with standard features such as air-conditioning; the Uconnect media center with a 4.3-inch screen; power windows, locks, and mirrors; and remote keyless entry. An 8.4-inch touchscreen for the Uconnect systems is also available.

Fabric-covered seats come standard on the AVP, SE, and SXT. Leather-trimmed seats are optional for the SE and SXT. The R/T seats occupants in black leather seats with red stitching, while the Crew trim gains premium leather, a heated steering wheel, and heated front-seats.

The Journey provides plenty of storage space for both large and small items. Total cargo room comes in at a respectable 67.6 cubic feet. Small-item storage spaces include a large glove box, storage compartments under the front-passenger seat, and an in-floor storage area below the cargo floor. Also available is a Flip 'n Stow™ in-seat storage option which provides even more storage space for toys, snacks, or any other small item necessities.

Every parent considers safety when reviewing his or her vehicle considerations. The 2013 Dodge Journey includes segment-standard safety features along with a few additional features. All Journeys arrive with seven airbags, traction control, stability control, brake assist, and trailer sway damping. The Journey includes sensors which can sense the force of any impact and release the airbags in several stages. This feature inhibits airbags from unnecessarily deploying and only deploys airbags needed for any given impact. The advanced airbag system prevents accidental injury to occupants who are not near the point of impact but who are near an airbag.

Optional LED taillights and foglamps help the driver see and be seen in dark or inclement conditions. Optional rear parking sensors and a back-up camera will help mom and dad see any children who choose not to go along to the store. All-wheel-drive, available on most models, shore up the Journey's safety features.

Driving Experience

Buyers looking for a top-of-segment driving experience should look to the Mazda or Nissan. The Journey focuses more on creature comforts, cargo storage, and passenger capacity. That's not to say the Journey is a brute to drive. The Journey's ride quality remains a strong point and makes it a capable family shuttle. It's just not as engaging to drive as some of its competitors. Chrysler adequately stiffens the suspension, provides well-responding shocks, and supplies a suitable ride-height to keep the Journey competitive, just not as exciting. Dampening and roll-control befit the vehicle but the steering can respond a bit too quickly. The R/T adds a performance suspension which seriously adds to the vehicle's character.

Available engine choices include a 2.4-liter, four-cylinder engine matched with a four-speed automatic transmission and a 3.6-liter, V-6 engine mated to a six-speed automatic transmission. The 2.4-liter engine produces a paltry 173 horsepower and 166 lb-ft torque. EPA-rated fuel economy for the four-cylinder engine is 19/26 mpg city/highway. Unfortunately, this engine is a loud, course, and disappointing power plant. The four-speed automatic transmission doesn't help the engine feel any less dowdy.

The V-6 provides a much better option. Chrysler's 3.6-liter, Pentastar V-6 comes standard on Crew and R/T trims and is available on the SXT. This engine gives drivers 283 horsepower, 260 lb-ft of torque, and delivers an EPA rated 15/26 mpg city/highway. The six-speed automatic transmission coupled to the V-6 produces much better responsiveness. However, we have noted that some test vehicles equipped with the automatic transmission occasionally judder and hesitate before downshifting.

The 2013 Dodge Journey is a serious contender in its category. Even as the yearly competitor list grows, the Journey has managed to stay relevant.

2013 Dodge Journey Review

2013 journey new car test drive, comfortable crossover suv offers value., introduction.

The Dodge Journey is a midsize sport-utility that offers the smoother ride and better fuel economy of a car with the cargo space and roominess of an SUV. It seats five or seven, depending on options. And with a significant price reduction, Chrysler claims the 2013 Dodge Journey to be the most affordable seven-seat crossover sold in the U.S.  Dodge Journey offers lots of choices: four or six cylinders, five or seven seats, basic trim or full-lux leather. And like most crossovers it offers front-wheel drive or all-wheel drive.  Journey is considered a crossover vehicle because it straddles the line between car and SUV. It uses a lightweight unit-body structure similar to that used by cars, instead of a body-on-frame truck chassis. Available all-wheel-drive traction adds confidence in bad weather.  Up-level models are powered by the same modern 3.6-liter V6 that's becoming ubiquitous in Chrysler Group vehicles. It has plenty of power but is ill-matched to the 6-speed automatic transmission, making it feel less powerful than it actually is. The V6 produces 283 horsepower at 6350 rpm, 260 pound-feet of torque at 4400 rpm.  The Journey's standard motivation is a 2.4-liter four-cylinder engine of 173 horsepower. We found the four-cylinder engine rough and noisy, with too little power for a vehicle of this size. The V6 is the one to get, in our view.  Inside is where the Journey shines. Its interior design and materials give it one of the nicest cockpits in the class. It comes standard with seating for five, with a two-passenger third row optional. Either way it has useful, though not class leading, cargo space. Filling the Journey with adults won't make all your passengers happy, but the rear seat should work well for children. Seats flip and fold to provide ample versatility for hauling people, cargo, or both. The Journey offers a fold-flat front passenger seat that will allow loading items up to nine feet long. It features some unique storage solutions owners will find useful. Among them: a bin under the front passenger seat, storage under the floor in the second row and behind the last row of seats, a dual glove box with Dodge's Chill Zone that cools soda cans, and all the usual cubbies up front, including a fairly deep center console. Entertainment options are plentiful, as the Journey has a CD player standard and offers a rear DVD entertainment system and a hard-drive radio.  2013 Journey R/T models come with new perforated leather seats, a dimpled leather heated steering wheel and dimpled shift knob, red accent stitching on the steering wheel and a new performance suspension for even more responsive handling.  New for all 2013 Journey models is the addition of a max air conditioning setting for the climate controls, and an instantaneous fuel consumption indicator in the color Electronic Vehicle Information Center screen.  With prices starting at $18,995 the Journey offers affordable utility. We recommend the V6 engine, which provides that extra margin of power that many buyers will want, as well as much more refinement. Be careful when it comes to options, though, as it is easy to get the Journey over $30,000, money that can buy larger and/or more premium SUVs.

The 2013 Dodge Journey is offered in five trim levels: AVP (American Value Package), SE, SXT, Crew, and R/T. The AVP and SE are only available with front-wheel drive and the 2.4-liter four-cylinder engine with 4-speed automatic transmission. The 3.6-liter V6 and 6-speed automatic are standard on Crew and R/T. The mid-range SXT can be ordered with front-wheel drive and the four-cylinder or V6, or with the V6 and AWD.  All five models provide seating for five in their standard configuration, or for seven with the optional Flexible Seating Group ($1,050) which adds not only a 50/50 folding and reclining third seat, but a 60/40 tilt-and-slide second seat, tri-zone automatic climate control, and a cargo compartment cover.  Journey AVP ($18,995) comes with cloth upholstery; cruise control; dual-zone manual air conditioning with air filtering; tinted glass; Uconnect 4.3 with AM/FM/CD/MP3/WMA stereo with six speakers, 4.3-inch touchscreen, auxiliary input jack, and USB port; power windows; power heated exterior mirrors; power door locks; remote keyless entry; tilt/telescoping steering wheel with audio controls; driver's seat height adjustment; 60/40-split-folding second-row seat; headlights with time-delay off; a grille with bright accents; and P225/65R17 all-season touring tires on steel wheels.  Journey SE ($20,995) adds LED taillamps and a longer list of available options.  Journey SXT ($22,995) adds deep-tint sunscreen glass, SiriusXM satellite radio, floor mats, fog lamps, and 17-inch aluminum wheels. Mirrors are body color rather than black, and the front fascia is more elaborate. The front-drive SXT can be ordered with the V6 ($1,600). Journey SXT AWD ($26,395) comes standard with the V6, which also gets bright exhaust tips, black roof rails, a performance-tuned suspension and a slightly larger fuel tank.  Journey Crew ($27,995) upgrades further with the V6 engine as standard; fully automatic halogen headlamps; dual-zone automatic climate control; Uconnect 8.4 with 8.4-in. touchscreen, AM/FM radio, SiriusXM radio, CD/DVD player, MP3/WMA/AAC, audio input jack, remote USB port and SD card slot; six-way power driver's seat with four-way lumbar support; fold-flat front passenger seat with in-seat storage; leather-wrapped steering wheel with audio controls; illuminated vanity mirrors; one-touch control for power windows; 115-volt power outlet; and new 225/55R19 all-season touring tires on 19-inch Satin Silver aluminum wheels. Door handles, exhaust tips, and roof rails are all chromed. Journey Crew AWD ($29,795) includes all-wheel drive.  Journey R/T ($28,995) and AWD ($30,795) are the sporty models. They add firm-feel power steering; high-performance suspension; heated front seats; black leather upholstery with red stitching; dimple-leather wrap for the steering wheel with matching red stitching; Infiniti 368-watt premium sound; and 19-inch alloy wheels finished in Satin Carbon. Door handles revert to body color, matching the body color trim in the grille; and roof rails revert to optional status ($125).  The Navigation and Sound Group ($995) includes Garmin navigation with audible turn by turn directions, POI and Lane Guidance, Uconnect Voice Command, Bluetooth streaming audio, hands-free texting and preprogrammed response, SiriusXM Travel Link, HomeLink universal garage door opener, rear park assist, and rearview camera; Rear DVD entertainment ($795) comes with a 9-inch screen, remote control, and two wireless headphones. Stand-alone options include the six premium Infinity speakers with subwoofer and 368-watt amplifier ($395); an engine block heater ($95), sunroof ($895), heated front seats ($295), integrated second-row child safety seats ($225), and a Trailer Tow Group ($145) with an engine oil cooler and a four-pin connector. Many more options are available, and the model you order and the combination of options you order can affect option prices.  Safety features on all Journey models include advanced multistage front airbags; torso-protecting, seat-mounted front side air bags; head-protecting curtain side airbags that cover all seating rows; driver's knee bag; front-seat active head restraints; a tire-pressure monitor; traction control; electronic stability control with rollover mitigation; ABS with Electronic Brake-force Distribution and Brake Assist; and Dodge's trailer sway control. Available all-wheel drive improves stability in slippery conditions.

On the outside, the Journey announces its presence with the familiar Dodge crosshair grille. The look might be described as bold. But the upright shape of the grille and its relation to the aluminum hood and windshield is very reminiscent of the current Dodge Grand Caravan, and no SUV ever earned sales by looking like a minivan.  That said, the Journey's front end is somewhat simpler than the Grand Caravan's, with more straight lines and straightforward shapes. Journey AVP and SE breathe through a full-width lower air intake, superficially resembling the Grand Caravan's but again more decisively shaped and divided into three segments. Upmarket SXT, Crew, and R/T Journeys sport a more aggressive front fascia with a single, centered lower opening arched at the top and defined by a faux skidplate below. Flanking it are round fog lights set into ersatz brake ducts.  Around the sides, the Journey features pronounced wheel arches and a creased character line that starts at the top of each headlight, angles upward, and wraps completely around the vehicle. The roofline flows nicely from the windshield, curving down slightly front to rear. The B- and C-pillars are blacked out to, as Dodge puts it, give the look of a car-like greenhouse and an SUV-like lower half.  At the back, the Journey's taillights wrap around the sides of the vehicle and continue into the tailgate, which opens upward. The taillights themselves are LEDs on all but the base model. The rear bumper has an integrated step pad that matches the height of the load floor. Models with the V6 engine can be distinguished by their dual chrome exhaust tips.  The Dodge Journey is bigger than it looks. In overall dimension, it is actually longer than such seven-passenger crossover competitors as the Toyota Highlander and Subaru Tribeca (although the Journey is just an inch longer than the 2013 Honda Pilot). The Journey's size translates to plenty of interior cargo room, but the design isn't as space efficient as some of its competitors.

The Dodge Journey features an inviting cabin, offering plenty of room for passengers and cargo, available seating for seven, and several smart and convenient storage solutions.  Rich, soft-touch surfaces form an attractive layout. The dash top, door panels, armrests and center console are all soft to the touch. Generous sound-deadening material makes the Journey quiet underway. The look, feel and calm places the Journey at or near the top of the class for interior quality.  The center stack features three low-set knobs surrounded by several buttons. The climate controls are arrayed around the center knob, and they're easy enough to use.  Infotainment choices (Chrysler calls them Multimedia Systems) begin on the base model with Uconnect 4.3, which has a 4.3-inch touchscreen, standard audio input jack and USB port; add SiriusXM satellite radio and this setup becomes Uconnect 4.3S. The next step up (Uconnect 8.4) comes with an 8.4-inch touchscreen and a 30-gigabyte hard drive that can hold up to 6700 song files. There is also a premium version of this unit (8.4N) that adds Bluetooth streaming audio, voice command, a Garmin navigation system with SiriusXM Travel Link, Lane Guidance and pre-programmed hands-free texting responses. We've had limited exposure to this system but it works fairly well. Given Garmin's reach, more people should be familiar with the navigation system, but we think it looks cartoonish. We also like the idea of hands-free texting.  The Journey offers plenty of entertainment features for all occupants. An AM/FM radio with in-dash CD player and six speakers is standard. An available rear DVD entertainment system has a nine-inch screen and wireless headphones. Dodge's Uconnect phone hands-free cell phone link and a premium Infinity sound system are also offered.  Cabin space in the Journey is good but not great. The driver's seat offers plenty of head and leg room for just about any occupant. The view is generally unobstructed front and rear. The Journey's unique storage and convenience features, however, are what really make it shine. All Journeys have a dual-level glove box with Dodge's Chill Zone up top. Chill Zone uses the air conditioning system to keep up to four soda cans cool.  The center console/armrest has a lid that slides forward three inches. It has enough storage space for up to 10 DVD cases. Two cupholders are located in front of the console, along with a tray for cell phones and the like. An additional, more discreet storage space is standard in R/T and Crew and optional on SE and SXT. The front passenger seat bottom flips up to reveal a storage bin that has about enough room for a good-sized purse. The seat back also folds flat, allowing items up to nine feet long to be loaded into the Journey. And to help drivers keep an eye on the kids, there is a popular minivan feature, a fisheye conversation mirror.  The second row is equally as ingenious. The three-passenger bench seat is 1.6 inches higher than the front seat to give passengers a better view of the road. It slides forward and back up to 4.7 inches in seven-passenger models, and can be ordered with integrated child booster seats for the outboard positions. The Journey also has two in-floor storage bins with removable liners. Each bin can hold up to six soda cans plus ice. The seat backs are split 60/40 and fold flat. When the optional Flexible Seating Group is ordered, the second-row seats fold in a scissors action, with the seat bottoms tilting up, the seatbacks tilting forward, and the seats sliding forward, to provide easy access to the third row. The rear doors also open 90 degrees, making entry and exit easy.  Base seating is for five, but the Flexible Seating Group expands seating capacity to seven. The third row is 0.6 inches higher than the second row, is split 50/50, and folds flat. Dodge says it offers enough head room for a 95th-percentile male. That's all well and good, but leg room is tight and the bottom cushion is low to the floor, so adults sit with their knees up. It will be possible to fit seven adults in the Journey, but the third-row passengers and second-row middle occupant will be none too happy about it. Younger children will have plenty of room, though.  Both the five- and seven-passenger Journeys have a shallow under-floor storage bin that extends from the rear of the vehicle forward to just behind the last row of seats. That means the five-passenger version has considerably more space under the floor than the seven-passenger version. The cover for this bin is reversible, too, with carpet on one side and plastic on the other. The plastic will allow for worry-free stowage of items such as muddy boots.  Cargo space expands to 67.6 cubic feet with all the seats down, which is average for the class but bested by the Toyota Highlander and even the smaller Honda CR-V. Loading cargo shouldn't be tough, as the liftover height is relatively low. It would be nice, however, if the tailgate had a separate opening glass. As an added bonus, a removable, rechargeable flashlight is included in the rear cargo area in higher line models.

Driving Impression

The Dodge Journey is nondescript when it comes to road manners, even after chassis changes for the 2011 model year that included stiffer springs and shocks, lower rolling resistance tires with more grip, a retuned steering gear and linkage, and modified rear suspension geometry.  Ride quality is generally good, with little pounding over bumps. The head sway that is associated with a high seating position is also minimal. Even with the available 19-inch wheels, the Journey does a good job of ironing out most jolts. But there are plenty of midsize crossovers and SUVs with similar ride characteristics.  While the high seating position affords a good view of the road, it seems to hurt the feel behind the wheel. This is not an off-road oriented SUV, and as such it seems that Dodge could have made it sit a bit lower, which would have made it feel more carlike. The way it's engineered, however, means the Journey leans more in turns than other crossovers. The steering is light, but predictable, and the brakes are easy to modulate.  The engines are comparable to the handling: capable but not as good as the best in the class. The base four-cylinder, Chrysler's 173-hp 2.4-liter World Engine, is loud in the Journey and delivers too little power in this 3800-pound package. The four-cylinder will certainly get you and your kids around town, but passing will require some planning and it's not rated for towing. With a 0-60 mph time of somewhere between 11 and 12 seconds, a four-cylinder Journey is one of the slower vehicles in its class.  The 3.6-liter V6 produces 283 horsepower at 6350 rpm, 260 pound-feet of torque at 4400 rpm. The V6 is plenty modern, equipped with double overhead camshafts (that's four cams) and four valves per cylinder. However, it seems hampered by transmission and throttle tuning.  Power is decent from a start, but the transmission shifts up as quickly as it can, meaning power is no longer readily on tap. It requires a deep stab of the throttle to coax a downshift and you practically have to floor it to get a two-gear downshift needed for highway passing. The problem is exacerbated by numb throttle response. We also found that with front-wheel drive, those foot-to-the-floor blasts can cause some torque steer (felt as a slight tug on the steering wheel) that temporarily disrupts fine steering control.  On the positive side, the 3.6-liter engine should provide 0-60 mph runs in the high seven-second range. Towing capacity is 2500 pounds, but a Dodge Grand Caravan minivan with the same engine can tow 3600 pounds, nearly have again as much.  Fuel economy numbers are decent. With the four-cylinder engine, the Journey is EPA-rated at 19/26 mpg City/Highway. The V6 is rated at 17/25 mpg with front-wheel drive, and with AWD it's rated 16/24 mpg.  The all-wheel-drive system is mainly meant for slippery surfaces, not off-roading. It does not have low-range gearing. It sends the power to the front wheels in most conditions, but when more traction is needed, such as in wintry conditions, rain or on any slippery surface, it can send some of the power to the rear wheels. It can also aid handling, at least a bit. When traveling over 25 mph into a turn, the system sends power to the rear wheels to help the vehicle turn. It's not as sophisticated as systems from Acura and BMW that send the power to the outside rear wheel in turns, but it's a help.

The Dodge Journey has one of the nicest interiors in the class, as well as an intelligent design with family-friendly entertainment and versatility features. Its handling is controlled and reasonably carlike. The four-cylinder engine lacks refinement, but the V6 doesn't, though it could use better transmission programming. Still, for the young family on the go, the Journey offers a pleasant ride, plenty of room, and enough space and entertainment options to keep the kids comfortable and occupied.  Kirk Bell filed this NewCarTestDrive.com report after his test drive of the Dodge Journey in and around Las Vegas and Sonoma, California. Additional material by John F. Katz.

features & specs

The 2013 dodge journey is a clever tweener, with three rows of seats if you need, and manageable size all the time--at a very reasonable base price..

The Dodge Journey crossover with sporty driving dynamics and wagon-like design cues. And for the most part, it's lagged behind against competitors like the Ford Edge, Hyundai Santa Fe, Honda CR-V and Toyota Venza. The Journey sits in the heart of the mid-size crossover market, but may have a bit of a perception problem since it actually comes in both five- and seven-passenger versions--one of its great advantages, along with good packaging and great feature content.

The Journey's poor timing is to blame, we think, because with recent updates to the drivetrains and interior, it's a very competitive, in-between offering that splits the different between too big and not flexible enough. The Journey was new in 2009, when Chrysler was in the middle of corporate turmoil, and in that original form the interior and its refinement just weren't up to the task.

Now, with the smoother instrument panel and trims subbed in a couple of years ago, as well as the new Pentastar V-6 and some improvements that make the Journey quieter and smoother, the Journey is one of the better picks among crossovers--especially if you want a small third row for extra occasional kid space but don't want to be driving a huge vehicle.

The Journey walks the line between boxy SUVs and tall wagons, but what we like most is how it shakes off the same-as sheetmetal dressing other crossovers and puts on sheetmetal that's refreshingly different, even if it isn’t necessarily fresh. The look isn't so different as to be wacky, but different enough to avoid the family-vehicle styling rut. Inside, the Journey follows a smooth, swoopy look and simple layout, with large dials and knobs and an LCD touchscreen framed by high-quality materials.

Forget about the Journey if you're set on the idea of a four-cylinder or top-drawer fuel economy. Their loud, coarse 173-hp, 2.4-liter four-cylinder engine and four-speed automatic are dawdling and disappointing in nearly every respect. Otherwise you should head straight to one of the V-6 versions, as they're excellent and refined. Chrysler's 3.6-liter 'Pentastar' V-6 makes 283 horsepower and is hooked up to a six-speed automatic for much better responsiveness. The six-speed automatic can take some of the polish off the package, though: in some versions we've driven, the automatic juddered and hesitated before it downshifted.

The Journey's handling is reasonably responsive. Last year Chrysler reworked the suspension to include stiffer, better-responding shocks and a lower ride height in front, and it's honed some of the Journey's duller responses. The ride quality remains a strong point, with the proper damping and roll control for a family vehicle, but the rather quick steering ratio feels a little out of place.

Safety has been another strong point. The NHTSA awards the Journey four stars overall, while the IIHS calls it a Top Safety Pick.

There's a lot for busy parents to like about the 2013 Journey. Dodge and Chrysler clearly applied some of its long-honed expertise with minivans to this interior, as people and cargo really fit well and there are plenty of smaller spaces for personal items, toys, and accessories. Front seats are what we’d best describe as ‘American-sized’—think wider than some other seats. Back-seat accommodations are among the best you’ll find in any vehicle this size, and the seats are contoured to fit adults; the seatback is adjustable for rake, and the whole bench slides fore and aft a few inches, so it’s easy to get comfortable back there. The rear seat folds fully flat, and under the rearward portion of the cargo floor there’s a huge space vast enough for a couple of laptop bags.

The Journey is offered in an extensive lineup, with AVP (American Value Package), SE, SXT, Crew, and R/T models. Several of the models (the Crew and R/T) get more features for the money in 2013, and prices for the top R/T model have actually been dropped $1,000 versus 2012. You'll need to step up to SXT models to get either the V-6 engine or all-wheel drive. But even with the base model you get power windows, locks and mirrors; air conditioning; cruise control; pushbutton start; a cooled glove box; a telescoping steering wheel; and an AM/FM/CD player. Bluetooth isn't included on the base model, but it is a $395 option. Seven-passenger seating is available even on the base model, while you'll also need to get the SXT to get the UConnect media center option. That includes an 8.4-inch touch-screen that at the top of the lineup can combine with a Garmin navigation system that isn't all that intuitive. Sirius Satellite Radio and TravelLink features are available, along with a premium audio system.

2013 Dodge Journey Styling

The 2013 dodge journey has a look that stands out as refreshingly different, especially from the outside..

The smartly embossed fenders, straightforward crosshair grille, and square-shouldered stance give it a faintly athletic look--probably as much to do with its compact size as anything else--and while it's somewhat slab-sided, the lipped wheelwells and chiseled sheetmetal feel striking in this era of crossovers that seem to go either for extreme boxiness or more carlike rakishness.

Inside, the Journey follows a smooth, swoopy look and simple layout, with large dials and knobs and an LCD touchscreen framed by high-quality materials. Open the Journey's door, and a bolt of metallic trim directs you quickly across a more softly sculpted dash, with suave finishes and tight fits. The contoured center stack gets mixed in with round cut-tube gauges and a blocky steering wheel, and it all hangs together, along with a big LCD screen (on some versions) and no-fuss climate controls that ride sidesaddle on that strip of bright trim.

2013 Dodge Journey Performance

The 2013 journey accelerates strongly and handles well--provided you get the v-6..

The Journey's suspension loads and unloads confidently, like a lower and leaner vehicle than it is, and there's none of the excessive bounding or wallowing when you hit a bump mid-corner with some taller crossovers. The ride quality remains a strong point, with the proper damping and roll control for a family vehicle. And while the hydraulic-assist steering system gets it right with weighting, the rather quick steering ratio feels a little out of place.

The steering is very quick for a family vehicle, and doesn't deliver the feedback it needs. Ride quality remains a strong point, however, with the proper damping and roll control for a family vehicle; although keep in mind that wheel sizes now range from 17-inch to 19-inchers and those largest wheels don't soak up the impacts quite as well. In any case, braking is strong, though.

2013 Dodge Journey Comfort & Quality

Flexible seating, good passenger space, and plenty of small-item storage makes the journey one of the most thoughtfully designed crossovers. ..

There's a lot for busy parents to like about the 2013 Journey. Dodge and Chrysler clearly applied some of its long-honed expertise with minivans to this interior, as people and cargo really fit well and there are plenty of smaller spaces for personal items, toys, and accessories. Overall, there's good seating for a full-size family without full-size parking drama.

Front seats are what we’d best describe as ‘American-sized’—think wider than some other seats. Back-seat accommodations are among the best you’ll find in any vehicle this size, and the seats are contoured to fit adults (two of them, or three kids); the seatback is adjustable for rake, and the whole bench slides fore and aft a few inches, so it’s easy to get comfortable back there.

In back, folding the seats forward takes an extra step—you slide the middle portion of the outboard cushions up and forward first—but the reward is that you get a lower, flatter load floor as well as that better contouring. There are also many thoughtful solutions for storing odds and ends, and keeping some of them out of sight. For instance, the cushion of the passenger seat flips up to reveal a bin underneath, while below the rearward portion of the cargo floor there’s a huge space vast enough for a couple of laptop bags.

The cargo hold specs out at a swell 37 cubic feet behind the second row, and a tight 10.7 cubic feet behind the raised third-row seat. Flip everything down behind the front seats, and you can fit a half-dozen flat-screen TVs in the Journey's 67.6 cubic feet of space.

2013 Dodge Journey Safety

Safety ratings for the journey have been good, and the feature set is respectable..

The 2013 Dodge Journey has excellent safety ratings from both U.S. test programs, and its roster of features is complete for a vehicle in this class.

The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) has named the Journey a Top Safety Pick in previous model years, as it's earned top 'good' ratings for frontal, side, and rear impacts as well as roof strength. That designation is carried over for the 2013 model year. And the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) gives the Journey an overall rating of four stars, with a five-star individual score for side-impact protection.

Every Journey comes standard with dual front, side, and curtain airbags; stability and traction control; active head restraints; and four-wheel disc brakes with anti-lock control. Integrated child booster seats are also offered for the second row. And we recommend the optional rearview camera and parking sensors.

2013 dodge journey features, the dodge journey is a pretty strong value for the money, and its connectivity and entertainment options are standouts..

The Journey is offered in an extensive lineup, with AVP (American Value Package), SE, SXT, Crew, and R/T models. You'll need to step up to SXT models to get either the V-6 engine or all-wheel drive.

Crew and R/T models get added features for 2013, for better value, while prices on the R/T have actually dropped by $1,000. But even with the base model you get power windows, locks and mirrors; air conditioning; cruise control; pushbutton start; a cooled glove box; a telescoping steering wheel; and an AM/FM/CD player. A USB port is also included, although it's tucked away in the center console. Bluetooth isn't included on the base model, but it is a $395 option. Seven-passenger seating is available on any of the models.

Step into higher-trim Journeys and you'll add features like premium sound; keyless entry; leather seating; and hide-away cargo bins under the seats. SXT models can be optioned with UConnect and a power sunroof for 2013, but with the Journey Crew you get remote start, automatic climate control, leather steering-wheel trim, and in-seat storage. At the top R/T level you add appearance upgrades like red accent stitching, satin-carbon aluminum wheels, and a six-speaker, 368-watt premium audio system.

You'll also need to get the SXT, at minimum, to get the UConnect media center, an option that we appreciated for its ability to easily control a wide range of devices ranging from iPhones to SD cards (it even quickly indexed one with 16 GB of music). The system includes an 8.4-inch touch-screen that at the top of the lineup can combine with a Garmin navigation system that isn't all that intuitive. Sirius Satellite Radio and TravelLink features are available, along with the premium audio system, and a DVD entertainment system for backseat passengers is also optional.

2013 Dodge Journey Fuel Economy

The 2013 dodge journey is in the ballpark, but it's no fuel-sipping standout..

Don't think of the 2013 Dodge Journey if you want to minimize your fuel budget. The Journey is solidly in the average range, among vehicles of this type, although if you're planning to go with the V-6 its real-world mileage is reasonably good.

Technically, the base four-cylinder engine and four-speed automatic transmission produce the best mileage ratings in the lineup--an EPA-rated 19/26 mpg. That's lower than most other four-cylinder crossovers, and not at all impressive.

The V-6 versions have somewhat lower numbers, but they're directly competitive with other V-6 crossovers, and we've seen good numbers in real-world driving, with results that meet or beat the Journey's 17-mpg city, 25 highway EPA ratings. Over about 700 miles of driving—across Michigan, and including a mix of freeway driving, family-hauling, and suburban side trips—we averaged 24 mpg. That's not far from what we've seen in four-cylinder crossovers this size in that kind of driving, and those models' powertrains aren't as satisfying as this V-6.

No detailed data available.

Consumer Reports obtains its reliability data from a questionnaire that is sent to subscribers. In the questionnaire, we ask subscribers to note any problems with their cars that occurred in the past 12 months. They are asked to identify problems that they considered serious (because of cost, failure, safety, or downtime).

A typical model has about 200 to 400 samples for each model year. For some model years, typically those of older or less popular cars, we do not have a large enough sample size to provide results of statistical confidence.

There are several ways in which a savvy car buyer can still research the quality of a car.
