This breathtaking coastline curves magnificently around the Pacific Ocean, and along with steep cliffs and rocky tide pools, you’ll see sea lions, seagulls, and other sea birds frolicking in the surf and on the rocks. The cove is next to La Jolla’s upscale shopping district, where you’ll find fine restaurants and designer boutiques. Adventure enthusiasts can go sea kayaking through the caves or snorkeling and scuba diving within the cove.

What should I eat in San Diego?

During your cruise from San Diego, you can’t miss trying the authentic Mexican cuisine and fresh seafood you’ll find all over the city. San Diego is particularly known for its Baja fish tacos, which are made out of fish (often cod or mahi-mahi) fried in tasty batter, placed on a corn tortilla, then topped with a tangy white sauce and a heaping scoop of cabbage.

Another iconic San Diego dish is the California burrito, which is stuffed with carne asada, french fries, guacamole, and cheese. The burger scene is also fantastic, and the battle for the best burger is usually between Hodad’s in Ocean Beach and Rocky’s in Pacific Beach. If you’re in the mood for seafood, try some fresh fish or locally caught spiny lobster (when it’s in season) at one of the many restaurants in Point Loma, the Gaslamp Quarter, or La Jolla.

What’s the history and culture of San Diego?

San Diego was discovered by Spanish explorer Juan Rodriguez Cabrillo in 1542, but before the Spanish settled there, the area was inhabited by Native Americans, specifically the Diegueño, Luiseño, Cahuilla, and Cupeño people. In 1769, the first mission was established. Control of the mission was taken over by Mexico in 1834, and it wasn’t until the United States incorporated California in 1846 that San Diego became a part of the country.

Today, San Diego is known for its laid-back attitude, and its surf and beach culture are front and center when it comes to things to do. The city’s economy is mostly concentrated in the military and defense industries, as there are multiple naval bases in the area. Tourism also plays a major role in the city, as do biotech and telecommunication services.

Where can I go shopping in San Diego?

The mecca of all malls in the city is Fashion Valley, located in Mission Valley. Fashion Valley is home to several department stores, brand names, and luxury brands like Louis Vuitton, Burberry, and Balenciaga. Soak in some of the Southern California sunshine as you walk between stores at this open-air mall.

For unique boutiques and eclectic shops, including San Diego’s most famous hat store, head to the uptown neighborhood of Hillcrest. The Gaslamp Quarter, which is located within walking distance from San Diego Harbor, is home to a number of popular shops and locally owned boutiques.

How can I get around San Diego?

The San Diego Trolley is a scenic way to travel around the city. It connects the Gaslamp Quarter with Old Town San Diego and some of the outer edges of the city limits. You’ll find many taxi ranks around downtown San Diego, popular beach areas, and the Port of San Diego. Take the Coaster to visit some of the coastal suburbs and their charming downtown areas. You can also use the Sprinter, a light rail line that connects the western coast with some of the more inland areas, such as San Marcos and Escondido.

What are the currency and tipping customs?

San Diego uses the U.S. dollar, and credit cards are widely accepted. Before you get in a taxi, make sure it accepts credit cards, since some drivers only take cash. Some smaller food stands may only accept cash as well, so make sure you always have cash on hand. ATMs are located all over the city. Tipping in San Diego is similar to the rate the rest of the United States uses, at 15% to 20% of the total bill.

Xander Bogaerts has season-high 3 hits, Padres beat Rockies 5-2

DENVER (AP) Xander Bogaerts had a season-high three hits, Matt Waldron gave up one run in six innings and the San Diego Padres beat the Colorado Rockies 5-2 on Wednesday night.

Share Video

“Getting ahead was the name of my game today,” Waldron said. “(Catcher Kyle Higashioka) and I executed well and the offense did what they do. It’s awesome. It was a fun win. Hopefully, we can keep it rolling.”

Ha-Seong Kim and Jackson Merrill had two RBIs to help the Padres beat the Rockies for the 11th time in their past 14 meetings. Kim had two hits, including a bloop double to right field that drove in the game’s first two runs and spurred a four-run first inning.

“When (Colorado starter) Ty (Blach) is on, he’s hitting his spots,” Rockies manager Bud Black said. “The first inning, he didn’t. Then the baseball got him with the blooper. Really good pitch to Kim and then it’s just the little dorker right down the right field line. That’s baseball.”

Waldron (1-2) rebounded from his worst outing of the season, a loss against Toronto in which he allowed five runs and seven hits in 4 2/3 innings. With four runs on the board before he took the mound for the first time, Waldron got some much-needed run support after San Diego scored just seven runs in his previous four starts.

“Credit goes to Waldron,” Padres manager Mike Shildt said. “He was very, very good. All pitches working. He mixed it in masterfully and had command of it. It was really filthy.”

Robert Suarez picked up his ninth save of the season, retiring the Rockies in order on seven pitches.

The multi-hit outing was the second in the past four games for Bogaerts, who entered Wednesday night batting just .198.

The game was the 25th consecutive to start this season in which the Rockies have trailed at some point. They’re only the second team to reach that mark since 1900, joining the 1910 St. Louis Browns.

In his first start of the season, Blach (3-4) took the loss for the Rockies, giving up four runs and five hits in five innings.

“I think I had a pretty good feel in the first inning,” Blach said. “I made a lot of really good pitches with two strikes. They battled and fouled them off. It’s just kind of one of those things where I wouldn’t really change anything.”

Ryan McMahon and Elias Díaz each hit solo home runs to center field for Colorado, which left six runners on base, including three in the fourth inning when it had the bases loaded with just one out before a pop-up and groundout ended the threat.

The Rockies have been outscored 35-7 in the first inning this season, the most runs allowed by any team in the first inning. It finished with two runs or fewer for the eighth time in the past 10 games, despite five of those contests taking place at hitter-friendly Coors Field.

Colorado RHP Dakota Hudson (0-4, 5.06 ERA) was set to face RHP Randy Vásquez (0-1, 1.80) in the fourth and final game of the series.

4 hurt in San Marcos head-on crash involving 3 vehicles

Authorities closed down south santa fe avenue between north rancho santa fe road and south las flores drive following the collision, by danielle smith • published april 21, 2024 • updated on april 21, 2024 at 11:43 pm.

Multiple people were taken to the hospital on Sunday night after a head-on crash involving three vehicles in San Marcos, authorities said.

The collision happened around 8 p.m. near South Santa Fe Avenue and North Rancho Santa Fe Road. Witnesses reported that a blue Honda SUV was going the wrong way on the eastbound lanes of South Santa Fe Road and crashed into a red Honda SUV and white Toyota car, the San Diego County Sheriff's Department said in a news release.

Inside the red Honda SUV was a 24-year-old father, a 22-year-old mother and their infant, according to deputies. The parents were transported to Palomar Medical Center with serious but non-life-threatening injuries, while the baby — who was not injured at the scene — was taken to Rady Children's Hospital as a precautionary measure, SDSO said.

The 46-year-old Toyota driver was evaluated by paramedics and released, authorities said.

The wrong-way driver, a 29-year-old man, was taken to Scripps Memorial Hospital La Jolla with major but non-life-threatening injuries, deputies said, adding that they have yet to speak with the wrong-way driver.

Authorities are still investigating if alcohol was a factor in the crash. At this time, SDSO says no one has been taken into custody.

Due to the crash, authorities closed South Santa Fe Avenue between North Rancho Santa Fe Road and South Las Flores Drive and urged people to avoid the area, the department said in a post on X .

Jack Roslovic and K’Andre Miller also scored for the Rangers, and Erik Gustafsson and Alexis Lafreniere each had two assists. Igor Shesterkin stopped 22 shots.

New York, seeking its first Stanley Cup championship in 30 years, has won four straight and 12 of its last 15 games. The Rangers, third on the power play during the season, were 2 for 6 with the advantage and scored a short-handed goal.

Tom Wilson had a goal and an assist, and Connor McMichael and Dylan Strome also scored for the Capitals, who had won four of five to close the season and take the second wild card in the Eastern Conference. Charlie Lindgren finished with 23 saves.

PANTHERS 3, LIGHTNING 2, OT

SUNRISE, Fla. (AP) — Carter Verhaeghe lifted a backhander just under the crossbar 2:59 into overtime, and Florida beat Tampa Bay for a 2-0 lead in their NHL first-round playoff series.

It was the fifth OT winner in Verhaeghe’s career, coming on a play where Matthew Tkachuk got the puck to Anton Lundell — who found Verhaeghe. He waited for Tampa Bay goalie Andrei Vasilevskiy to commit, then put the puck over him to end it.

Sam Bennett, who left with an injury in the second period when he appeared to get hit by teammate Brandon Montour’s slap shot, and Vladimir Tarasenko scored for Florida. Sergei Bobrovsky stopped 21 shots, including some highlight-reel saves.

AVALANCHE 5, JETS 2

WINNIPEG, Manitoba (AP) — Artturi Lehkonen had a goal and assist and Colorado scored four goals in the second period in a win over Winnipeg to tie the first-round playoff series at a game apiece.

Miles Wood, Zach Parise, Josh Manson and Valeri Nichushkin also scored for the Avalanche. Alexandar Georgiev made 28 saves for Colorado, a bounce-back effort after allowing seven goals on 23 shots in the series opener.

David Gustaffson and Mark Scheifele scored for the Jets. Connor Hellebuyck stopped 27 of 31 shots.

Game 3 of the best-of-seven series is scheduled for Friday night in Denver.

PREDATORS 4, CANUCKS 1

VANCOUVER, British Columbia (AP) — Filip Forsberg scored a goal and had an assist, and Nashville beat Vancouver to level the best-of-seven playoff series at 1-1.

Anthony Beauvillier — a former Canuck — also had a goal and an assist for the Predators, Colton Sissons and Kiefer Sherwood had goals and Juuse Saros made 17 saves.

Nikita Zadorov scored for a Vancouver team that struggled to get shots on net and experienced a series of unlucky bounces.
