Follow on facebook:, here’s what adventure touring on a 250cc dual sport is like, motolara take on the oregon back country discovery route riding wr250rs..

Alberto Lara and partner Naomi Tweddle love nothing more than traveling to remote regions around the world on motorcycles. Together they share their passion for motorcycle travel and camping through the photography and videos they post on the MotoLara blog.

In this MotoLara video, the duo take on the Oregon Back Country Discovery Route. The OBCDR is the longest trail system in Oregon with over 1,500 miles to explore. The route includes snow-capped peaks, sand dunes, high desert, clear blue water streams and breath taking vistas throughout.

Oregon Adventure Touring

While there isn’t anything in the video you couldn’t do on a big bike, the ease in which the WR250Rs handle technical terrain demonstrates some of the key advantages of adventure touring on smaller Dual Sport motorcycles.

The ease in which the pair are able to free the lightweight WR250R from the mud, the effortless little jaunt in the sand dunes and squeezing through the gap in the fallen trees are just some of the ways smaller bikes offer advantages on the trail. Picking up the bike is also a breeze. This allows you to conserve energy and you are able to explore new trails with less fear of getting stuck when the track gets technical.

Oregon Adventure Touring

While some may dismiss a 250cc for long-distance adventure touring, the WR250Rs seems to have no problem carrying all of the MotoLara gear on their extended trip. The WR250R has been known to surprise people with how well it handles long stretches on the highway as well. With fuel and repair costs being much cheaper, small bikes are also a more economical way to travel.

Oregon Adventure Touring

Big Bikes have their advantages, but the vast trail system of the OBCDR is ideal terrain for a small bike adventure. No doubt, this MotoLara video will inspire more riders to consider exploring the world on smaller adventure bikes.

I own all parts of the spectrum in dual sports. From 1190R ticking the big box, a 690 the middle and my WRR the small street duty with the street legal dirt bikes 500 EXC and Husaberg 570S also to cover any ride condition. All are modded out to hilt. If I had to live with only one it would be the WRR. An uncorked WRR is a different animal than a stock one. The power is up high so the better it breaths… After 8 years with it I have become comfortable rapping 10k rpm when you need it. Durability… threw a master link once and had to leave it beside the road. Thief stole it and had it for four months a couple years ago. Thief put his sportbike plate on it so a Trooper’s plate recognition busted him. Got the bike back. Replaced the ignition lock and noted the new scratches from him yarding it into his pickup. Figure well looks okay but I will change the oil.

It will run 90 mph still and all I have ever done with the engine in 28k miles is change the oil. It is still on its original spark plug and it shifts better now than any of my other bikes. I have put 700 mile days in at 75 mph.

No bottom grunt off road but you adapt with clutch skills like the 125 days.

Rob Dabney

Wow. 700 mile days are hard enough on a 1200cc. The fact that you did it on a 250cc is impressive. Hats off! And this is just more evidence that the WR250R can be used for pounding the pavement when necessary. Thanks for sharing and glad to hear you got your bike back!

Unimog424

One of those mods is a seat and large tank. At 75 mph and bags I get about 45 mpg with my tune. I think I could get better mileage if I went leaner but I am not going to change after its history of dependable performance. I have a destination that is 700 miles away that I make in a hard day being inspired to get there etc… Do not mean to imply it would be my choice for back to back long days.

Dave

You’re about where I’m headed…or at least want to be headed as funds allow! LOL

I currently have an 1190R that I absolutely love, but it is a BIG bike for the tight stuff. My wife and I have matching Honda Groms for our back road play bikes and I’ve absolutely feel in love with the darn things. They’re so fun and easy to ride. I’ve read a quote somewhere, “it’s more fun to ride slow bikes fast as opposed to fast bikes slow”, and I’m finding out how true that it. Half the time I ride the 1190, I’m having to hold back because of rules/speed limits, etc. On the Groms it is full bore every where you go and you can’t help but laugh.

But where I was going with this is, comparing your 690 enduro to the WR250R…

The 690 is only 10b or so heavier, but double the power. It has suspension and brakes that are up to par. The bike wouldn’t require “uncorking” or many upgrades other than slapping my Great Basin over the back and taking off. Yes, it is $3000 more when comparing them new. But if I started with a WRR and added an exhaust, programmer, intake of some sort, and then suspension….I’m making up the $3000 pretty fast. So, if you don’t mind me asking, why would you choose the WRR over the 690? I want to pick up enduros for the wife and I in the next year or two and I keep going back and forth on what size/model to get because I doubt that I’ll end up with both like you have done! LOL

I appreciate any feedback!

Hi, just pure dependability but it would be the closest call. Lower maintenance, mileage etc… The statement that if I only had to have one bike I hope never applies to me in practice! It was really just a intellectual exercise and in fact not really a choice I have to make!

Ha-ha Understood! Thanks Unimog

Faysal Itani (@faysalitani)

Hey! I’ve never ridden the WRR but I lust after it anyway. Beautiful bike. I have one question though: the low end power. Doesn’t that become an issue in the rough stuff? I don’t really understand why they geared/mapped the bike this way, given its intended purpose. I’m a torque addict and, in a bike of this sort, it puzzles me that they’d go for a high end, revvy power band rather than something more similar to the Honda CRF250L, for example. It did put me off buying the bike to be honest, as I ride mostly urban and dirt.

RobG

I’d love to have one of the WRR’s but my legs are way too short. I’m looking to pick up a used XT250 for the EFI and thus better mpg than my previous KLX250S or even my TW200 (which may be getting sold). My DR650 rocks though… simplicity throughout and has 34k miles on it and never misses a beat. But it lacks ground clearance due to lowering it 2-1/2 inches and is a bit heavy on the tighter stuff.

Hey Rob. That XT250 might be the ticket for you. Low seat height, EFI, good ground clearance and a decent sized tank from the factory. All for $1,500 less than the WRR too. But you do give up some performance and a 6th gear.

Bob R

Check out the CRF250L too. Mine has never let me down under heavy abuse. Good enough road manners and all the modern niceties. EFI, 6 speeds, full instruments, etc. It’s no single track bullet, but as a lightweight adventure bike it certainly has done me good.

MotoLara

How tall are ya? We’re 5’4” and 5’9”. We lowered one of our WRRs 1 inch (Yamalink) and then shaved off the seat’s foam on both bikes to lower it 1.5 to 2 inches extra. Problem solved! 😉

My WRR is lowered 1″ with custom springs not a link. More $$ but better way to go IMHO. I ride all my taller bikes but lowered this one because the other taller bikes I do not ride in places where I have get a leg over a loaded rear bag etc on single track etc. Handles great on road too.

Leemrw

I’m also 5’9″ and was wondering what you had done to manage what is a tall bike for me. Just looked at your website and was hoping to see what other mods you made to the bikes. Can I find that anywhere?

Sorry, we haven’t documented what we did to lower our WRRs but the solutions are simple: shave off foam from the seat. very cost effective = free and you can lower it as much as you need without sacrificing ground clearance. Another way is to get a lower kit (Yamalink) for the rear suspension. Hope this helps. Cheers

Hey! Thanks ADVPulse for the organic shout out 😀 Glad you liked our ORDBR video. We really enjoy travelling on our Little Devils (WRRs) ..they are just SO MUCH FUN!. We also have two big adventure bikes, so we kind of know the difference 😉

The WRRs allow us to focus and spend our energy on the ride itself: new places, cool scenery, challenging and engaging road conditions, etc. With our bigger (and much heavier) adv bikes the ride becomes more about handling and managing ‘the bike’… which is rewarding to a certain degree… but then you are exhausted to really enjoy the other aspects of the ride.

Then again, it’s a personal choice. We prefer small & nimble vs big & heavy, for the type of riding we enjoy doing 🙂

Just an observation: At one point we rode on sand dunes with fully-loaded WRRs (the same load/packing we would have on our bigger bikes) and there is no way we could have ridden on sand dunes with fully loaded bigger adv bikes! Maybe our riding skills are not that developed… but maybe there’s a point at which weight & size matters regardless of skill level…

mark p.

Great piece! You don’t need big bikes for big adventure!

that’s exactly right! check out our Peru ride for more proof 😉 http://advrider.com/index.php?threads/peru-unfinished-business-two-200cc-chinese-motos.1067726/

Fred Nicolet

Thanks for sharing. I’d like to do something similar soon.

Svendura

Very interesting article and great photos, also. I do all my travels here in Europe with my KLX250, tent and sleeping bag and I love the reliability and the nimble handling of my bike. Even a tour up to the north cape was not too much for it. I like to see more topics on 250cc dual sport bikes.

Eric

I’m surprised they pack such a large tent riding small bikes.

Harold Olaf Cecil

Lighter = funner! Naomi and Alberto ride with Giant Loop’s Great Basin Saddlebag and Fandango Pro Tank Bag. They did a longer trip in Peru on even smaller 200cc Keeway dual sports. Go light. Go fast. Go far.

Jim V.

Great work guys!! Love all of the media you put out. Making media while trying to ride is a challenging thing. I appreciate your discipline and your willingness to share. Ride on and ride safe out there!

Welcome to the Minimalist Touring Thread: the place for everyone who is interested in adventure touring on small displacement (250cc and under) thumpers. Write about your bikes and gear, great places to ride and events. It would be great if we could also compile a list of useful books and articles, links to web sites and other information sources for minimalist touring. Beginners and seasoned veterans alike appreciate the utility value of such machines, so check your bias and ego at the door and let's get on with the ride. Please introduce yourself and tell us about your bike and your travels. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- DR200, KL250 (Super Sherpa) KLR250, KLX250, TTR230, XT225, TW200, XL250, vintage thumpers

SOme day when I can have a 2nd bike I really want to try some longer distance trips on a small bike. Maybe I will change my mind one I actually try it lol.

A suggestion is to continue the picture thread we have going for "250's and Less" and throw every thing else here. For the first timer it might be initially confusing but the regulars around here can help out. Somehow this symbol strikes me as a 250cc or less tourer. The Aerostich people put out a small 78 page booklet called Lightweight Unsupported Motorcycle Travel for Terminal Cases which is available for $5 or included free with orders over $100. I can't say it is worth $5 but it certainly echoes the words spoken here regarding the kind of bikes we prefer. A quote or two; "a treatise on touring by motorcycle in a practical and efficient manner" "...relatively simple equipment and just enough power to get the job done." "...riding for the sake of riding- almost anything-without worrying about keeping up appearances" "...it means having a certain amount of grit, ingenuity, and self reliance." Notice I said prefer and not the only bikes we like. Our household has a full stable of bikes (12+), from a Polini 911 .... to a BMW K bike. But the one I seem to gravitate to the most is that unassuming DR200SE because of it's pure simplicity/utility and fun factor. I will have to try that KL250? (Super Sherpa) someday to check out that 6spd trans. I'm also a hard core self reliant type; if I can't perform most of the repairs/service on my bike by myself I don't need it! So let's get on with the ride!

I get functionality and fun out of my DR200 all out of proportion to the money I spent on it. Small bikes rock! Lois on the Loose had quite a blog posted on line before she decided to write a book about her journeys. I think she took it down so people would buy the book. She's got it exactly right...use just enough bike to get the job done, go light. I've been fantasizing for a long time about going long-distance backroad and off-road touring on my DR200. Wish I had more time. My DR200 is also my daily driver. With some pannier racks now available from Happy Trails, it's going to be even more efficient.

what if its a 31 yr old 350? does that count? I put about 750 miles on my '75 XL350 last year. mostly fartin around town with a couple of day trips on back roads and trials. the furthest i ever got away from town was about 35 miles. i know, not much. I'm putting my MT250 on the road this summer and i'll probably get the same out of that. LITTLE BIKES ROCK! Specially the old ones. No competition when it comes to grin factor.

I've already been tempted enough by the Mini Adventure bike thread . The TW200 with a custom "fat bob" tank would be my tool. Nothing but smiles and tons of tread.

Got back today from 1500km ride from Durban, South Africa, to Maputo, Mocambique on a new Jialing 200AT and a 27yr old XT250. This was a test ride for a trip to Kenya and to taste the famous LM-Prawns at the Cost do Sol Restaurant in Maputo. We have also filmed the trip (DVD will be made) and the story will be up on my site www.changingplugs.com . Riding the small bikes seems much the same as my DR600 Suzuki, except heck of a lot easier to pick up when it falls! Easy to cruise at 60mph and getting 104 miles to the gallon. Cheap Chinese bikes are now flooding the market & I am keen to put mine to the test....so far, so good!

One of Peter Egan's best ever stories was the tale of his camping trip to northern Wisconsin on a 50cc step through Honda - he was riding with a friend on a ten-speed bicycle and the speeds were pretty evenly matched. He said the friends powerbar consumption was greater than the gasoline the Honda used on the trip. I met a guy on one of my trips to Europe who had toured most of the continent on a used $50 Mobylette 50cc moped - when it finally died somewhere in Spain after three months and several thousand miles he just leaned it against a wall and walked away from it. There's something to be said for that way of touring.

While the 250cc singles are a hoot, they're really not set up for touring very well, especially comfort and seating. I'd love to take a slower-speed backroads tour on something like a CB175 or perhaps an upright version of the small Ninja. Something reasonable comfortable, but nimble, preferably a small/smooth twin rather than a buzzy single. These days, when I tour on my DL650, I constantly shake my head and wonder why I need more. But I haven't sold my FJR. - Mark

To be considered an “adventure” motorcycle we’re talking street legal, off-road capable, and comfortable to ride for long distances.

Adventure bikes inherently strive to offer equally good performance, handling, and comfort both on- and off-road. This is a complicated balance to strike, and there tend to be concessions one way or another. Choosing the best adventure motorcycle really means figuring out what qualities are most important to you.

This is not an exhaustive list of all bikes that meet those general criteria or could be made to meet them with after-market upgrades. Instead, we chose these tried-and-true adventure motorcycles that come from the factory ready for long-distance riding.

The Best Adventure Motorcycles for 2023: Ride Everywhere

The V-Strom line offers new or budget-conscience adventure riders an affordable way to explore the world on a legendary V-twin. Well known for being reliable, versatile, and inexpensive, the 650 platform is a great way to join the fast-growing sport of adventure motorcycle riding.

Differences in the models are small but important. The standard V-Strom 650 (shown) comes with 10-spoke cast wheels with tubeless tires, while the XT model has spoke-style wheels with tubeless tires, hand guards, and a protective lower engine cowl.

The 650XT Adventure comes with everything the XT does in addition to a rugged accessory bar and 37L quick-release aluminum panniers. Depending on your riding style, goals, and budget, the 650 may be all the bike you’ll need.

If you can afford a bit more, budget adventure riders can now get a more purpose-built bike for their money with the new 800DE model.

  • Base price $12,299-12,699
  • Engine 659cc parallel twin
  • Power 79 hp
  • Wet weight 450 lbs.
  • Fuel capacity 4.7 gal.
  • Tire size 21”/18”

The Best Adventure Motorcycles for 2023: Ride Everywhere

Aprilia, having just joined the adventure motorcycle scene last year, no changes have been announced for the Tuareg 660 for 2023. Aprilia has done a good job offering a compelling new ADV bike at a reasonable price.

At only 450 pounds wet, the Tuareg is nicely placed at the smaller end of the mid-weight options. The suspension has a whopping 9.4 inches of travel in both the front and rear, giving it one of the highest ranges of suspension travel in its class.

Fuel is carried low, having a big impact on how the bike handles and making it relatively easy to pick up for a bike this size. There are tons of unique, well-thought-out features to discover if you take the time to research this bike thoroughly.

For the many folks struggling to find a Ténéré 700 or who are thinking about paying over MSRP to get one, the Tuareg deserves consideration.

  • Base price $10,499
  • Engine 689cc parallel twin
  • Power 74 hp
  • Wet weight 452 lbs.
  • Fuel capacity 4.2 gal.

The Best Adventure Motorcycles for 2023: Ride Everywhere

The Ténéré 700, or “T7,” has enjoyed a huge following since conception. Unfortunately, Yamaha has not been able to keep up with demand. If you can manage to find one, it is indeed a special bike worthy of the accolades it has received.

Yamaha has succeeded in offering the ADV community something that no other manufacturer has to date: a rock-solid engine in a capable ADV bike at an incredibly low price. How did they do that? Well, compared to the competition, the  Ténéré 700  has almost zero extras.

For some, this is a compromise; for others, a preference. If you need ride modes, traction control, and cruise control to enjoy your ride, this is not your bike.

If you like the simplicity of a basic setup that will help you become a better rider by the sheer absence of rider aids, start looking now. It might take you a while to find one, and you will likely have to pay above MSRP to get it. If you want more bang for your buck, look at the Tuareg 660 .

  • Base price $9,995
  • Engine 853cc parallel twin
  • Power 77 hp
  • Wet weight 493 lbs.
  • Fuel capacity 4 gal.

The Best Adventure Motorcycles for 2023: Ride Everywhere

The F 750 is better suited for pavement than the F 850, coming with 19-inch front and 17-inch rear cast aluminum wheels. All GS models come equipped with innovative features and state-of-the-art technology, proving a plush ride regardless of which size you choose.

Additionally, BMW has a whole host of optional upgrades to make sure your bike meets all of your needs. If you go with the F 750 GS over the bigger, more off-road capable 850 models, you will potentially save a fair amount of money and a little bit of weight but also get a little less power, have a shorter range, and have less wind protection.

If you are looking at BMW because you want a GS and you’d like to be able to take your bike down any road you come across, check out the F 850 GS for better ground clearance, bigger, spoked wheels, and better suspension.

  • Base price $11,349-12,999
  • Engine 776cc parallel twin
  • Power 84.3 hp
  • Wet weight 507 lbs.
  • Tire size 21”/17"

The Best Adventure Motorcycles for 2023: Ride Everywhere

Brand new for 2023, Suzuki has stepped up to the plate offering adventure riders a more dirt-oriented bike with the addition of the 800DE model (shown) to the V-Strom lineup.

The 800DE fits nicely into the V-Strom family between the popular 650 and 1050 options. This is particularly exciting due to the fact that the   larger, mid-weight lineup of ADV bikes is notably lacking affordable options, and the V-Stroms are known for providing great value for the money.

The Adventure model on the 800 platform comes equipped with quick-release black-anodized 37L aluminum panniers, plus a rugged accessory bar and aluminum skid plate for true off-road touring capability.

While the base weight is unfortunately on the heavy side at 507 pounds (we don’t know what the Adventure model add-ons weigh), Suzuki’s reputation for reliability coupled with a fair price point will suit many.

  • Base price $12,595-13,595
  • Power 90 hp
  • Wet weight 504 lbs., 538 lbs.
  • Fuel capacity 4 gal., 6.1 gal.
  • Tire size 21”/17”

The Best Adventure Motorcycles for 2023: Ride Everywhere

The standard F 850 GS (shown) is a trimmed-down version of the F 850 GS Adventure with a smaller fuel tank, fairing, and shorter suspension . The Adventure model, or “GSA” as it is often referred to, comes with quite a bit more and, as a result, weighs significantly more.

At 538 pounds, the GSA is a heavy adventure motorcycle for the mid-weight category but also the most long-distance-touring-friendly for this displacement. With its large gas tank, windshield, and bulky fairing, the F 850 GSA offers good range, weather protection, and comfort.

Don’t be misled by the base prices, as you will quickly realize many of the BMW features you want are optional, and they add up fast. Depending on what kind of adventure riding you want to do, if you are a BMW fan, you might find that for the weight and the price of the 850, you can get more bike for your money with the GS 1250 .

A good reason to stick with a BMW? They have a 3-year, 36,000-mile warranty — one of the best in the business.

  • Base price $12,190-13,190
  • Engine 853cc V-twin
  • Power 76 hp
  • Fuel capacity 6 gal.

The Best Adventure Motorcycles for 2023: Ride Everywhere

The Moto Guzzi V85TT has a transverse V-twin engine and is shaft driven — a unique combination. The standard model V85TT (shown) comes with quite a few comfort, performance, and tech features that you might not expect on an old-fashioned-looking bike.

The Adventure model has even more. If you crave classic, retro styling and a ton of character, and you’re more interested in road travel than aggressive off-road capability, take a peek at the details of this Moto Guzzi. You’ll be surprised by what you get for your adventure motorcycle money. Spoiler alert: there’s gorgeous luggage involved.

  • Base price $13,949-15,199
  • Engine 889cc parallel twin
  • Power 105 hp, 103 hp
  • Wet weight 473 lbs., 464 lbs.

The Best Adventure Motorcycles for 2023: Ride Everywhere

Updated for 2023, the KTM 890 Adventure base model (shown) has received some nice upgrades that make it even more appealing at this price point. You might quickly find yourself spending more, though, as KTM has cleverly introduced a new demo mode, allowing you to test out all the optional electronic rider aids for the first 932 miles.

Upon startup, after you’ve passed that mark, the aids will vanish, and you may decide you need to purchase just one or two upgrades, or perhaps you’ll feel compelled to spring for the full tech pack. Regardless of your decision there, the reworked adjustable suspension, improved seat comfort, electronics, and better wind protection will serve you well.

The key difference between the Adventure R model and every other bike in the midweight ADV category is the suspension. Lightweight, responsive, and powerful, this bike is just as capable, comfortable, and fun on the twisties as it is on single track.

More dirt-oriented than the base model, this bike is for you if you want the highest-performing, easiest-to-pick-up adventure motorcycle money can buy.

  • Base price $14,995-17,395
  • Engine 888cc triple
  • Power 94 hp
  • Wet weight 501 lbs.
  • Fuel capacity 5.28 gal.
  • Tire size 19"/17", 21”/17”

The Best Adventure Motorcycles for 2023: Ride Everywhere

Released in 2020 to replace the well-loved Tiger 800, Triumph has done an amazing job producing a high-quality, capable, and comfortable range of bikes to meet all your adventure motorcycle needs.

If you prefer more road riding, the 900 GT (shown) and 900 GT Pro will take care of you on everything from urban adventures to proper long-distance travel. It comes with a 19-inch front and 17-inch cast wheel.

The GT Low model saves nearly 2 inches in seat height by slightly reducing the suspension travel. As this is the more street-oriented model, the tiny loss in ground clearance shouldn’t pose an issue.

If you want an adventure bike built for maximum off-road, all-day riding capability, control, and comfort, the Tiger 900 Rally and Rally Pro have you covered. The latter comes with a tubeless, spoked 21-inch front and 17-inch rear wheel.

Triumph also offers a 3-year, unlimited-mile warranty. Imagine how many miles you could lay down on one of these in three years!

  • Base price $14,499
  • Power 105 hp
  • Wet weight 472 lbs.
  • Fuel capacity 5 gal.

The Best Adventure Motorcycles for 2023: Ride Everywhere

First released in 2022, the Norden 901 is based on the well-loved KTM 890 Adventure platform. The key difference is the Norden is set up to be more comfortable on the road for traveling long distances than the 890, with a wider, plusher seat and softer suspension.

This bike stands out from the competition because of its relatively low MSRP and power-to-weight ratio — an impressive 105 horsepower and 472 pounds. Despite looking chunky, the fuel and engine weight are down low, making it feel surprisingly light and responsive.

Don’t let KTM’s reputation for being high maintenance scare you off; the oil change interval on this bike is a whopping 9,300 miles.

A welcome addition to the popular mid-weight adventure bike category, the Norden 901 handles very well on- or off-road and is comfortable, powerful, and fun to ride.

  • Base price $17,695-18,295
  • Engine 937cc V-twin
  • Power 110 hp
  • Wet weight 495 lbs.
  • Fuel capacity 5.5 gal.

The Best Adventure Motorcycles for 2023: Ride Everywhere

Introduced in 2022, the DesertX is an exciting addition to the mid-weight ADV motorcycle lineup. This is the first modern Ducati with a 21-inch front and 18-inch rear tire, long-stroke suspension, and a frame designed specifically for off-road adventuring.

Ducati did their homework, successfully offering an impressive package that stands out from the crowd. Head-turning styling and overall build quality; amazing suspension, brakes, and electronics package; and, of course, the most powerful engine in its class.

This is Ducati we’re talking about, after all. If you don’t want to make any concessions in performance or comfort going between on- and off-road riding, the DesertX is one of the most capable and highest-quality adventure motorcycles currently available.

  • Base price $15,199-17,599
  • Engine 1,137cc V-twin
  • Power 107 hp
  • Wet weight 554 lbs.

The Best Adventure Motorcycles for 2023: Ride Everywhere

Suzuki has been inspired by the competition, introducing a whole host of revisions to the 1050 V-Strom and making it a better performing, more comfortable, and more versatile platform.

The new   DE model replaces the XT model from prior years, with the intention of offering a more off-road capable model to the lineup. How does the DE differ from the base model? The standard 1050 (shown) comes with 19-inch front and 17-inch rear tubeless 10-spoke cast wheels.

The DE has a spoked 21-inch tubed front wheel and 17-inch tubeless rear, offering better ground clearance and taller suspension for off-road performance, among other features.

The Adventure model is equipped with all the updates of the DE, with the addition of travel accessories such as aluminum panniers and LED fog lights.

  • Base price TBA
  • Engine 1,084cc parallel twin
  • Power 101 hp
  • Wet weight 505 lbs., 529 lbs.
  • Fuel capacity 5 gal., 6.5 gal.
  • Tire size 21”/18"

The Best Adventure Motorcycles for 2023: Ride Everywhere

As of writing, the official 2023 models, options, and corresponding pricing for the Africa Twin lineup have yet to be confirmed for the US market. But no best adventure bikes list is complete without the Africa Twin.

Shown is the 2022 Adventure Sports ES model. With a lot of new adventure bikes popping up in the mid-weight category, Honda’s popular CRF1100L platform has some stiff competition.

It may not be the lightest, fastest, or highest-performing adventure motorcycle on the market, but Honda has given us a solid, good-performing, ultra-reliable, quality-made ADV bike that has been popular around the world for decades.

Most importantly, it handles the road just as well as the dirt and offers great value for the money. How do you argue with all that?

  • Base price $29,995-30,595
  • Engine 1,158cc V4
  • Power 170 hp
  • Wet weight 573 lbs.
  • Fuel capacity 7.9 gal.

The Best Adventure Motorcycles for 2023: Ride Everywhere

Making its world debut in 2023, the V4 Rally is an updated Multistrada on steroids. It has way too many bells and whistles to list (we have a whole article on that  here ), but you can trust that all your power, comfort, safety, and connectivity needs will be exceeded.

Solo or two-up, this bike will confidently adjust to accommodate any conditions you might throw at it. Leading the pack in radar technology, the V4 is the first motorcycle in production to have both front and rear radar for adaptive cruise control and blind spot warnings.

Boasting more horsepower than any other ADV bike on the market, fuel consumption is something to investigate, especially if you are looking for the longest range possible.

The main reason this may not be the bike for you? Sit down before you read the price range.

  • Base price $16,299
  • Engine 1,199cc parallel twin
  • Wet weight 584 lbs.
  • Fuel capacity 6.1 gal.

The Best Adventure Motorcycles for 2023: Ride Everywhere

The Super Ténéré is Yamaha’s biggest adventure motorcycle and has been around for years. It has a large following and is known for being trustworthy and capable.

Unlike its little brother, the Ténéré 700 , which notoriously carries its weight high, the engine mass is kept low on the 1200 for great handling. It does come with more features than the 700, but fewer than its competitors in the heavyweight category.

Fewer electronics mean less to fail, making it a reliable and durable choice for long-distance travel. The Super Ténéré does have basic frills, like cruise and traction control, and adjustable suspension.

This bike has been and will continue to be a solid choice for adventure riding.

  • Base price $19,595-24,200
  • Engine 1,160cc triple
  • Power 147 hp
  • Wet weight 529 lbs., 575 lbs.
  • Fuel capacity 5.3 gal., 7.9 gal.
  • Tire size 19”/18”, 21”/18”

The Best Adventure Motorcycles for 2023: Ride Everywhere

Triumph’s 1200 lineup got a complete makeover for 2022. A new engine, chassis, suspension, brakes — the whole works. The biggest complaint about the old 1200s was the weight. That has gone down, so good job Triumph for listening.

More road-focused with a 19-inch front and 18-inch rear wheel, the GT series includes the base model GT (shown), GT Pro, and GT Explorer. The Rally Pro and Rally Explorer models are more dirt-oriented, with a 21-inch front and 18-inch rear spoked wheel, more ground clearance, and longer travel suspension.

The Rally models are the same bikes, except the Explorer comes with a larger tank size (5.3 gallons versus 7.9 gallons), blind-spot detection, fuel tank protection bars, standard heated seats, and taller handlebar risers.

Fast, agile, and comfortable, there is a Tiger for everyone in this broad lineup.

  • Base price $17,995-20,345
  • Engine 1,254cc flat twin
  • Power 136 hp
  • Wet weight 549 lbs., 591 lbs.
  • Fuel capacity 5.2 gal., 7.9 gal.

The Best Adventure Motorcycles for 2023: Ride Everywhere

The big BMW GS bikes are what come to mind for many when we think of adventure motorcycles. The GS Adventure — or “GSA” — is a beefed-up version of the base GS (shown), having bigger fuel capacity, more wind protection, spoked wheels, and higher clearance for off-road riding.

These behemoths may be heavy, but they are easier to pick up than you may expect, thanks to the big cylinder heads and crash bars that hold them partly upright.

If you are tempted to save money or weight by going with the base model, you might want to take a look at all the add-ons you’d likely want, calculate how the weight would be impacted, and compare it to what comes included in the price of the GSA.

There’s a reason BMW has a loyal brand following in the adventure bike ecosystem; they’ve set the bar high.

  • Base price $20,299
  • Engine 1,301cc V-twin
  • Power 160 hp
  • Wet weight 550 lbs.

The Best Adventure Motorcycles for 2023: Ride Everywhere

Seeing extensive revisions in 2021, the KTM 1290 platform has only minor updates for 2023.

The Adventure S model (shown) is the more long-distance, road-oriented sibling of the aggressively off-road capable Adventure R model. The 1290 models cover ground quickly and effortlessly and have the ergonomics to make sure your adventures are as comfortable and enjoyable as possible.

KTMs are highly customizable and known for being incredibly lightweight, fun, and powerful. Because of that, they’re one of the best adventure motorcycles on- and off-road.

2023 Adventure Motorcycles — No Perfect Bike

adventure motorcycles

Full disclosure, I ride a Suzuki DR650SE, and I call it my adventure motorcycle. We have indeed been on many wonderful adventures together, but it’s really a dual-sport. Yes, it is street-legal and off-road capable, but it is not very comfortable. It becomes exponentially less so on long-distance rides , even with upgrades.

Adventurers the world over will share similar stories of epic times on all types and sizes of bikes , including single-cylinder or “thumper” bikes like mine. The point is that while you can certainly have adventures riding whatever bike you fancy (or can afford), an ideal adventure motorcycle will take you everywhere you might want to go, and you’ll be a lot more comfortable.

Adventure Motorcycle FAQs

Good ground clearance, suspension travel, and large spoked wheels all help make navigating different types of terrain and obstacles easier, safer, and more enjoyable.

Vibration, jarring, and wind buffeting are three big factors that are exhausting on long rides. Twin-cylinder engines or above will vibrate much less than single-cylinder bikes. Plush suspension will absorb changes in terrain, and a frame-mounted fairing will provide ultimate protection from the wind.

The lightest weight bike in this comparison is the new Aprilia Tuareg 660 , coming in just under 450 pounds (449.7, to be exact). The only other bike that comes close is the Yamaha Ténéré 700 , at 452 pounds. The heaviest is the venerable BMW R 1250 GSA , at 591 pounds. Leave it to German engineering to figure out how to perfectly balance that much weight on two wheels.

No surprises here. The priciest is Ducati, and the economy is a Suzuki. The new Multistrada V4 Rally can be yours in Ducati Red for just under $31,000. For that price, you can buy matching Suzuki V-Stroms for yourself and two of your friends. The base model V-Strom 650 comes in at $9,104 and has been successfully carrying adventure riders all over the world for nearly 20 years.

Suzuki has gone after the adventure market with their new V-Strom “DE” models . They are still pretty far behind the competition in side-by-side comparisons, but the pricing is so good it might not matter. At the other end of the spectrum in quality, price, and cutting-edge technology, the Tiger 1200 line has been completely revamped for 2023.

If you want to do lots of road riding, the very popular BMW GSAs , Triumph Tigers , and of course, the Ducati Multistrada will offer the most comfort on the longest rides. Heavier, large-displacement bikes tend to ride better on the road.

Riding off-road can mean a lot of different things. Generally speaking, the lighter-weight ADV bikes tend to be easier to handle (and pick up!) riding off-road. Look at the KTM 890 R (really any KTM), Tuareg 660 , and Ténéré 700 if you live for dirt.

This is where the mid-weight adventure bikes win. The Ducati DesertX is creating quite a stir. I dare you not to want this bike. Also touted as equally well-appointed for both are the Tiger 900 , the new kid Norden 901 , and the Africa Twin .

If you're the type of rider who constantly has the urge breakaway and ride somewhere outside of a regular riding routine, you've come to the right place. The Dual-Sport Motorcycle Tours we offer are specifically meant to take riders away from the pavement, cars, and typical scenery some motorcycle riders see. Please keep in mind, nobody just "clicks and buys" adventures like this. It takes quite a bit of consideration and consulting before choosing the right tour for each individual. While all the expeditions we show are fantastic adventures, sometimes the smallest differences between them can be a factor on which motorcycle tour is right for you.

01. Engine & Exhaust

adventure tour 250

A state-of-the-art, liquid cooled, single-cylinder, four-stroke 250 cc engine gets you started in KTM’s exciting world of ADVENTURE. The engine is equipped with an electric starter and delivers a smooth power for playful exploration. Twin overhead camshafts, four valves and electronic fuel injection are integral to the KTM 250 ADVENTURE’s power delivery and together with a balancer shaft, they ensure the highest levels of smoothness. Its lightweight and compact construction facilitates straight air intake channels, allowing for a shortened distance for air to flow into the combustion chamber, and beyond for gas to flow to the two catalytic converters. Besides the faster movement of air and gases, it also allows the engine to warm up faster. Additionally, the two catalytic converters and the fuel tank ventilation system (EVAP system) improve emission values and prevent fuel vapors from being released into the environment, making the KTM 250 ADVENTURE extremely eco-friendly and compliant with the strict EU5 exhaust emission standards.

adventure tour 250

Slipper Clutch

The slipper clutch is a unique feature that saves power and helps in slides. It opens when the engine back-torque becomes too high, preventing annoying rear wheel chatter when braking sharply or decelerating and gives the wheel just that little bit of braking for a controlled rear wheel slide. It also closes with the force of the clutch springs when the throttle is opened, allowing the clutch to be pulled with the little finger, which saves energy when riding.

adventure tour 250

The 72 mm bore piston is DLC coated for extra durability. It performs a stroke of 61.1 mm, which results in a displacement of 248.77 ccm and produces a compression ratio of 12.5:1. The crown is cooled by the oil spray nozzle, while the piston uses a continuous, low-friction, nicasil-coated aluminum wet bushing with open-deck design.

adventure tour 250

Cylinder head

State-of-the-art DOHC (Double Overhead Camshaft) technology. The four valves in the cylinder head of the KTM 250 ADVENTURE are actuated, via durable finger followers, by two overhead camshafts. This design is one of the preferred performance solutions of many offroad models, including the successful KTM 1290 SUPER ADVENTURE. It is not only renowned for its extreme reliability, but also offers low friction, thanks to the ultra-hard DLC coating on the finger levers – a solution that makes this engine super reliable, even when pushing for longer at high RPM.

adventure tour 250

Electronic fuel injection

The 250 ADVENTURE is fitted with a modern engine management system featuring BOSCH electronic fuel injection in conjunction with a DELL’ORTO 38 mm throttle body. The system guarantees perfect throttle response, excellent fuel efficiency and low exhaust emissions.

adventure tour 250

The KTM 250 ADVENTURE is fitted with a robust 6-speed sequential gearbox. The gear ratios fit perfectly to the power band of the 250 cc engine and allow you to smoothly select the perfect gear, whether it be flowing street rides or more challenging offroad escapes.

adventure tour 250

The KTM 250 ADVENTURE matches all the A2 driver´s license requirements.

adventure tour 250

The KTM 250 ADVENTURE features a lightweight and precision-crafted exhaust system comprising of stainless steel header pipe and pre-muffler leading the exhaust gases to a slim silencer. The silencer features a light aluminium sleeve and has been positioned close to the bike’s overall center of gravity without disturbing the rider when moving on the bike. It improves balance and handling, whilst also delivering smooth, instant power. The pre-muffler is made from stainless steel. Two catalytic converters are integrated in the header pipe and pre-muffler respectively bringing the exhaust emissions down to Euro IV level.

02. Chassis

Lightweight and robust

Similar to the race proven frame of the KTM 450 RALLY, the KTM 250 ADVENTURE features an ultra-lightweight, yet extremely stable trellis frame. It exceeds all requirements for stability and controllability and is the backbone of this nimble adventurer. The forgiving balance of flex and stiffness, combined with a wheelbase of 1430 (+/-15.5 mm) and a 63.5 degree steering head angle, clearly suggest an offroad oriented layout. It is also the basis of its outstanding straight-line stability and precise and agile steering behavior.

The removable, steel trellis subframe is fixed to the main frame with 4 screws. It was developed to be compact and lightweight, but strong enough to carry a passenger and luggage, while negotiating the tough conditions that can be expected when adventure riding.

adventure tour 250

The die-cast, open-lattice swingarm is a signature element of the KTM ADVENTURE range. It is precisely manufactured with an optimized stiffness, while still offering excellent flex characteristics. The rear shock links directly onto the swingarm, reducing complexity and parts, while also enhancing the feeling of the bike’s behavior for the rider. The relatively long swingarm provides enough space for any suitable offroad tire.

Ready for an unexplored detour

With many years of development on the toughest terrain, the KTM 250 ADVENTURE draws on WP’s renowned racing experience for a great handling package that is ready for more adventure. The WP APEX suspension in the front and rear, work together perfectly with the chassis to provide comfort, control and the clearance to venture down more challenging roads.

adventure tour 250

The WP APEX 43 mm upside-down fork is the absolute leader when it comes to suspension in this class. Due to high-quality materials and a state-of-the-art production process, the WP APEX 43 mm fork – with 170 mm of travel – has outstanding response and damping characteristics.

adventure tour 250

Triple Clamp

The triple clamp is developed for a 63.5 degree steering head angle. It is also possible to change the height of the handlebar with different mounts available in the KTM PowerParts catalogue.

adventure tour 250

The cutting-edge WP APEX shock absorber finds its way into the agile chassis of the KTM 250 ADVENTURE. It provides 177 mm of travel and is ideal for traveling long distances in tough conditions. Thanks to an adjustable spring preload, it can be adjusted for different loads, ensuring typical KTM performance with all day riding comfort.

adventure tour 250

New 5-spoke cast wheels are specifically designed to be robust enough to handle harder adventure riders in tough terrain. The 19" front wheel and 17" rear wheel provide excellent performance on the street, while still offering ample grip and control in the dirt.

adventure tour 250

High-quality BYBRE brakes featuring a large 320 mm front brake disk and a 230 mm rear disk work perfectly with a 4-piston radially mounted front caliper and a 1-piston floating rear caliper, to provide the ideal mix of control and stopping power, which is further supported by KTM's proven ABS system.

14.5 liters of potential fun

The fuel tank is a central element of the design and engineering mastery of this daily adventurer. Its shape offers excellent ergonomics, with a narrow knee area that provides great control and even fits taller riders. It has an impressive 14.5 liter fuel capacity and together with its exceptional fuel economy, is set for more than 400 km of non-stop exploring on a full tank.

03. Ergonomics & Comfort

Take control of your adventure

As on the bigger-displacement KTM ADVENTURE machines, the KTM 250 ADVENTURE is fitted with a high-end, tapered steel handlebar that importantly, provides a comfortable riding position and maximum control.

The best seat to explore more

The two-part seat is positioned for comfort and control on long rides, at an accessible seat height of 858 mm. The rider’s seat is narrower in the front, making it even easier to reach the ground. The seat cover provides a tested mix of grip and easy movement, while the foam ensures the ride stays comfortable - motivation to keep riding more and more. The seat can be easily removed for access to the airbox and a small storage compartment.

Stay connected to your machine

The wide and robust foot pegs come directly from the offroad models. They were developed for all day riding, standing or seated, for street or offroad boots. They have rubber inserts, which provide more comfort when riding on the street and can be easily removed for more grip when heading off the beaten track.

See things more clearly

The KTM 250 ADVENTURE’s windshield is an efficient deflector. It has a profile that allows the rider to move around the bike freely and offers an unobstructed view directly in front of the bike, even when covered in dirt. It can also be mounted in a lower or higher position to suit the rider´s size or needs. Two windshields of different lengths can be ordered from the KTM PowerParts catalogue.

04. Bodywork & Graphics

Ride harder for longer

As minimal as possible and as much as needed. The KTM 250 ADVENTURE features a distinctive KTM-style bodywork, providing excellent ergonomics and an aggressive look inspired by the rally bikes. Ready for adventure, the bodywork is produced in color to help keep its appearance looking fresh, even after scratching. The tank spoilers and rear side panels are slightly wider than the seat for good control and also to reduce wear and tear on the seat. The shape of the fuel tank is optimized to offer the rider freedom of movement and the best control. The headlight mask is as reduced as possible, taking design cues from KTM’s rally bike generation to create a slim, lightweight front end. A low front fender assists with good aerodynamics and keeps spray to a minimum when travelling on the road, while a robust engine guard protects the engine and exhaust when venturing off the tarmac into the dirt.

05. Software & Electronics

Elevate the experience

KTM develops electronic rider aids that provide more control and better performance for riders of all levels of ability, with the intention of enhancing the fun in all conditions.

adventure tour 250

Offroad ABS

Adventure motorcycling means traveling long distances and venturing into the unknown. For that reason, the KTM 250 ADVENTURE features a number of rider aids to cope with the unforeseen - like the offroad ABS mode. In this mode, ABS is completely deactivated on the rear wheel but only reduced on the front, meaning riders can lock up the rear wheel, allowing them to steer the rear end into corners. It also prevents over regulated front wheel braking, or the opposite of too much front brake pressure, ensuring the best stopping power in the dirt. In the event of a restart after an engine stall, the ABS function retains it's memory, remaining engaged in offroad mode without the need to switch it off again.

2009 QLINK XF200 Review - Motorcycle.com

The idea of Chinese-made bikes buzzing around the U.S. would’ve been crazy talk only 15 years ago. Now you can’t walk into a chain auto parts store and not notice at least one two-wheeler, if not an entire section devoted to small-displacement scooters and motorcycle-like…things, all tagged with a Made in China decal.

The 12 Best 250cc Motorcycle Models In The USA By Manufacturer

There’s more to the 250cc motorcycle segment than just dirt bikes.

Joe Appleton

125s can be a bit on the small side, but for many riders the 500cc and up segment can be a little overwhelming too. The obvious solution is a 250cc motorcycle, which offers the perfect blend of small-capacity simplicity but with enough grunt to tackle the job in hand. While the 250cc motorcycle market has a big presence all over the world, it’s kind of under-represented in the United States.

Thanks to our big, wide roads and fast moving traffic, many riders prefer bigger engines to help keep up with the rest of the traffic safely. It’s because of this reason that many manufacturers have upped the cubic centimeters from 250 to 300 for many of their models, and Kawasaki are now taking it a whole step further by enlarging their successful Ninja 300 into an even more beastly 400. But if you want something a little tamer, what options have you got?

Suzuki GSX250R Parked

Unless you’re willing to take a gamble on an unknown quantity, your 250cc motorcycle quest is usually going to bring you to the most popular manufacturers. Be warned though, many of these manufacturers don’t offer small capacity motorcycles in the USA, if they offer them at all. Brands like Ducati , Harley-Davidson , Indian , and many others don’t manufacture small bikes.

Some companies are starting to offer smaller sized motorcycles, like BMW Motorrad , while others like KTM have always had small machines on their books but in far too many shapes and sizes to count. For this list, we’re going to look at the big four: Honda, Yamaha, Kawasaki, and Suzuki. And because the 250cc motorcycle segment has been enlarged somewhat to cover models up to 300cc, expect to find a few 300s sneaked in too.

Kawasaki KLX Side View

Lastly, don’t feel like going small is a bad thing. Learning to ride on a small bike generally makes you a better rider in the long run – and don’t be fooled or intimidated by other riders who brag about horsepower and performance specs, because the vast majority of those riders with 1000cc motors that boast 200 horsepower have never even come close to using all of the power those bikes offer. We’ve always been a firm believer that it’s much better to ride a small sized motorcycle and push it to the limit rather than riding around on a top-of-the-range performance bike that will never be able to unleash its full potential. So, with that in mind, let’s go shopping for your first 250cc motorcycle.

250cc Motorcycle - Honda CRF250L Rally

The Best Of Honda’s 250cc Motorcycle Range

Honda is one of the most prolific manufacturers of small-capacity motorcycles in the world, but their list of 250cc motorcycle models available in the USA is a little limited. For most of their road bikes, Honda have already abandoned the 250cc engine in favor of a slightly larger 300cc unit to help keep up with other manufacturers. When we were looking for a top 3 from Honda, we had to include two 300s, but the difference between a 250cc motorcycle and a 300cc motorcycle is barely noticeable – so they still count on our list.

#03. The Honda Rebel 300

Honda Rebel 300 Side View

Kicking off with something that isn’t a 250cc motorcycle (but might as well be) we have the all new Honda Rebel 300 . The Rebel has always been a great entry-level motorcycle but the new generation has had a styling overhaul. Powered by a smooth 286cc single cylinder engine with 24.4 hp and 19.9 lb-ft of torque, and great fuel economy, the Honda Rebel 300 has enough guts to get you from A to B, and do so in style. And the Honda Rebel 300 top speed? A very handsome 85 mph.

Also, it makes for an easy gradation to the Rebel 500 if you ever feel like you need more power. The 2018 model currently has an MSRP of $4,399 making it quite an affordable option. It’s a little larger than a 250, but Honda are pushing 300s at the moment, and if you’re in the market for a Honda cruiser in that size bracket, then this is as good as you’re currently going to get.

#02. The Honda CB300F & CBR300R

Honda CBR300R Side View

Again, we’re going for a 300cc rather than a 250cc motorcycle, but that’s Honda’s modus operandi at the moment. To make thing more confusing, we’re giving you two for one: the road focused Honda CB300F and the more sports-oriented CBR300R . Both come powered by the same engine: a peppy single cylinder engine that produces the same 30.5 hp and 19.9 lb-ft of torque in both models – in fact it’s the same as the Rebel 300 too, but produces more horsepower – which is great for those in search of something small and reliable but with enough sports for a good rip on the weekend.

The CB300F is a lightweight naked bike ideally suited to commuting and urban riding but with enough punch for long rides if you need to stretch your legs. The CBR300R is a more performance focused machine with an aggressive riding stance, fantastic handling, and beginner friendly controls. Both are available with or without ABS too. Which one is best? Well that depends on what you want – but both are great choices regardless. The CB300F has an MSRP of $4,349 for the base model, while the CBR300R has an MSRP of $4,699 for the base model.

#01. The Honda CRF250L Rally

Honda CRF250L Rally Front 3/4

Now for a genuine 250cc motorcycle from Honda: the CRF250L Rally . The Rally is a lot like the base model CRF250L but comes with awesome Paris-Dakar styling and revised riding ergonomics, and in our opinion it’s worth it. Essentially you’ve got a dual purpose motorcycle which offers exceptional performance both on and off-road. Powered by a 249.6cc liquid-cooled single-cylinder four-stroke engine that makes 24 hp, the CRF250L Rally is a great choice for riders who want something versatile that comes with a commanding road presence, but don’t want a heavy, over-powered ride.

Unusually, the CRF250L Rally comes equipped with a lot of top-shelf features that aren’t usually found on small bikes like these, such as LED lights, trail-focused dual sport tires, useful hand guards, and other little accessories. The Honda CRF250L Rally also comes with optional ABS too. For the base model Honda 250, there’s an MSRP of $5,149 – which is a great price considering what you get for it.

The Best Of Yamaha’s 250cc Motorcycle Range

Yamaha offer some of the best small capacity motorcycles in the world, but sadly most of them never make it to the United States. With models like their SR250 Sports Heritage models consistently selling well in Europe and Asia, here in the US we have to deal with a smaller selection. While we might not have the likes of the SR250 to play with, we do have three exceptional Yamaha motorcycles to take advantage of: a 300cc sport bike, a cool 250cc cruiser, and a  utilitarian 250cc dual purpose machine.

#03. The Yamaha YZF-R3

Yamaha YZF-R3

Again, Yamaha have turned their back on the 250cc motorcycle designation for their sports range and opted for a 300cc variant instead. Their YZF-R3 model is one of the most popular small-capacity sports machines on the market and has been winning fans ever since it arrived in 2015.

Powered by a 321cc twin-cylinder motor that produces a hearty 41 horsepower, it’s a little more potent than the rest of the bikes on this list, but it makes it an ideal candidate for riders looking for an actual sport bike, rather than just small engine’d motorcycle wearing sports clothes. Ideal for urban commuting, fun in the twisties, and a formidable force at a track day, the R3 isn’t a bad choice. It’s not particularly versatile but what it lacks in obvious practicality it makes up for in excitement.  ABS is an optional extra, but if you can go without then Yamaha list their 2018 Yamaha YZF-R3 with an MSRP of $4,999.

#02. The Yamaha V Star 250

Yamaha V Star 250

The Yamaha V Star 250 is a great choice for riders looking for a small, nimble 250cc motorcycle wrapped in classic styling. Yamaha know how to build a comfortable 250cc motorcycle and they’ve got a wealth of experience behind them, and that’s why the V Star 250 is one of our favorites – it’s an approachable machine with easy ergonomics and an un-intimidating ride posture, but don’t be fooled by its welcoming nature.

It’s got enough poke to put a smile on your face, with an estimated 22 horsepower and 15.2 lb0ft of torque being produced from its little v-twin 250cc motorcycle engine – enough to allow you to ride on the freeways if you’d want to, but we think you’d be better off swapping the fast lane for gentler, more scenic (and more fun) small roads instead. Wrap that kind of performance and ride experience into an elegant and timeless cruiser shell that’s got retro-cool written all over it, and you’re on to a winner. Yamaha sells these for an MSRP of $4,349. If you’re looking for a cool cruiser or a 250cc chopper motorcycle, then this could be the best 250cc motorcycle for sale for your needs.

#01. The Yamaha XT250

Yamaha XT250

For the last Yamaha entry on our 250cc engine list we’ve got the XT250 . Currently in its third generation, the XT250 has been the small-capacity dual purpose weapon of choice since it first rolled on the scene in the early 1980s. This small dual sport machine is a light and nimble 250cc motorcycle with easy-to-use ergonomics, but comes with quite a dominating road presence. The engine itself isn’t particularly powerful but what it lacks it straightforward power it makes up for in usability.

The 249cc single cylinder engine is good for about 16.2 horsepower (depending on who’s doing the talking) and 12.9 lb-ft of torque, but it can reach top speeds of around the 76 mph marker, which is pretty impressive. Still, the power output might seem small, but that’s the trade-off that you have to make if you want a motorcycle that can handle well on the roads but also become a dirt-riding demon when you turn down that rugged laneway. Reliability has never been an issue with the XT250 throughout its lifetime and it requires little in the way of maintenance, so it’s a sound investment. Yamaha list the XT250 with an MSRP of $5,199.

The Best Of Kawasaki’s 250cc Motorcycle Range

Kawasaki has had a long an illustrious history in the 250cc motorcycle segment, however, they’re slowly turning their backs on the old 250 in favor of larger engines to help them pass strict emissions tests. That being said, the 250cc-300cc models that they’ve got on offer are some of the best in the industry and definitely worth looking at.

#03. The Kawasaki Ninja 300

Kawasaki Ninja 300

Kawasaki has long abandoned the 250 in favor of a 300 for their small-capacity sports model, and now the Kawasaki Ninja 300 has already been replaced by the Ninja 400! So let’s enjoy the smallest Ninja before it gets too big to even be remotely referred to as a 250cc bike–even though it’s essentially a 300cc motorcycle. As one of the most popular small sport bikes on the market, this sporty little number ticks plenty of boxes. It comes with aggressive, sports inspired styling, boasts a neat 296cc straight twin engine that produces a max power figure of around 39 hp and a max torque figure of 20 lb-ft at 10,000 rpm, and has a top speed of around 112 mph.

Yes, it’s quite a lot of bike for such a small capacity engine – and that’s what makes it such a popular motorcycle. Aside from the engine and performance, the Ninja 300 comes with a respectable fuel economy of 66 miles per gallon, a comfortable (not overly-aggressive, rather) riding position, and an easy riding experience. Kawasaki list the Ninja 300 with an MSRP of $4,999, or $5,299 with ABS.

#02. The Kawasaki Versys-X 300

Kawasaki Versys-X 300

Still a 300 rather than a 250cc motorcycle, the Versys-X 300 is a new comer on the scene. Designed a smaller version of the already successful Versys models, the Versys-X 300 comes powered by the same 296cc engine found in the Ninja 300 listed above, but tuned for a very different riding experience. Thanks to the lightweight frame and long travel suspension, the bike is now geared towards touring and mild off-roading. The engine has been tuned to provide better torque in the mid and low range, making the Versys-X an ideal choice for those looking for something strong and powerful but less focused on top speeds.

With regard to the lightweight chassis and long suspension, the Versys-X 300 is also a decent off-road bike providing that you’re not overly ambitious about its ability, and it thanks to that versatility, comfortable riding position, and general utilitarian nature that we rate the Versys-X 300 so highly. It’s not a 250cc motorcycle, but it’s still worth considering. Kawasaki have given the Versys-X 300 an MSRP of $5,399 or $5,699 with ABS.

#01. The Kawasaki KLX250

Kawasaki KLX250 Camo

And now for a genuine 250cc motorcycle from Kawasaki. While Kawasaki have quite a few 250cc dirt bikes in their arsenal, their road-legal and more practical offerings are pretty thin on the ground – but who needs variety when you’ve got the KLX250 ? Kawasaki refer to this 250cc motorcycle as an adventure bike, and while it’s true that you can get into some adventurous situations with it, it’s probably more of a dirt bike that you can adventure on, rather than an adventure bike that you can go off-road on.

Thanks to its useful dual nature, the KLX250 is as at home weaving through busy city streets as it is bashing its way through off road trails. The KLX250 comes with fully adjustable suspension, a nice and accessibly low seat height, aggressive styling, and easy ergonomics. If you’re in the market for a versatile street-legal dirt bike then the Kawasaki KLX50 is worth investigating. The KLX250 has an MSRP of $5,349 – or $5,549 if you like it in this awesome digital camo finish.

The Best Of Suzuki’s 250cc Motorcycle Range

Unlike the rest of the big four, Suzuki actually has quite a few models in the 250cc department, and their sport bike variant is only relatively new too. While many other manufactures have long since abandoned the 250 in favor of the 300 and up, Suzuki are still flying the 250cc motorcycle flag with pride, and we’re glad that they are. While Suzuki have some decent 250cc dirt bikes, we’ve decided to focus on their more road-oriented 250cc motorcycles instead.

#03. The Suzuki GSX-250R

Suzuki GSX-250R

Fairly new on the small-capacity sport bike scene we have the Suzuki GSX-250R. Unlike the Honda CBR300R, Yamaha R3, or Kawasaki Ninja 300, the GSX-250R is the only 250cc motorcycle in the sports department. With that in mind, it makes it harder to compare it to its larger sized brethren, because the smaller engine doesn’t make for a truly fair measure. On the outside, the Suzuki is a fully faired machine that gives it a sporty look, and it comes with quite a smart aesthetic. The controls are easy access and straightforward, it has a nice and low seat height, and the riding position is aggressive but not at all back breaking.

This Suzuki 250 motorcycle isn’t as powerful as it could be, but power isn’t everything. With 24.7 horsepower and 17.25 lb-ft of torque on offer, its way behind its competition, however, it’s a nice, light and maneuverable machine that is a lot of fun to ride despite its shortcomings. If you want to keep up with the competition on this, you’ve got to become a better a rider – and that is the whole idea behind small sport bikes. Suzuki have given the GSX-250R an MSRP of $4,499.

#02. The Suzuki GW250

Suzuki GW250

If you don’t want to be labelled as a sports rider but were quite taken with the ride experience offered by the GSX-250R then you should give some thought to Suzuki’s un-faired 250cc motorcycle offering: the GW250. Essentially, it’s the exact same engine as mentioned above but wrapped in the body of a contemporary naked street bike. The 248cc twin-cylinder engine has been tuned to provide better low-end and mid-range power, making it a practical runner for zipping around the city streets.

It might not look as aggressive as its sports-focused sibling, but the GW250 has its own unique edge which shows off its naked curves in a pleasing way. We’re not crazy about the headlight cluster but that’s a personal objection. Looks aside, the GW250 is a nice and nimble, lightweight and highly maneuverable machine that offers efficient fuel economy, making it a decent choice for everyday city riding. Economical, attractive, reliable – what more do you need from a full size but small capacity street motorcycle? Suzuki’s GW250 prices start from $4,099.

#01. The Suzuki TU250X

Suzuki TU250X

Unfortunately, our favorite small-capacity Suzuki isn’t available in California, but that’s California’s loss. This classic looking 250cc motorcycle is actually one of our favorites on the entire list thanks to its retro-themed aesthetic that isn’t too over the top. The TU250X looks like a 70s motorcycle but comes powered by modern technology. The aesthetics rely heavily on the bike’s sleek tank, spoked wheels, round headlight, old school exhaust, and more than a liberal amount of chrome. And while we like a bit of chrome plating, a bit of polish and a vintage themed paint scheme, the Suzuki TU250X has more to offer than good looks alone.

Unlike the other two Suzukis, this is powered by a fuel-injected 249cc single cylinder engine rather than a parallel twin, but the tuning is pretty much the same, with the focus being on low-end torque for a superior urban riding experience. The engine is quite predictable, but that’s a good thing. The handling is great though, and the TU250X offers smooth, agile and confident steering, making it an excellent choice for new riders. It’s our favorite classic themed 250cc motorcycle, and just one look at it should tell you why. If you’re interested, Suzuki list the TU250X with an MSRP of $4,599.

Frequently Asked Questions

How fast can a 250cc motorcycle go.

The average 250cc motorcycle can hit around 80 mph, but some sports-specific models will go much faster and can hit up to 100 mph. Others might be lucky to hit 80. There’s no definitive answer to this question, sadly.

Do you need a motorcycle license for a 250cc?

If you want to ride your 250cc motorcycle on the road then you are required to have a motorcycle license. All two-wheeled vehicles over 150cc are classed as motorcycles, and therefore require the correct license to operate on public roads.

Is a 250cc motorcycle too small?

A 250cc motorcycle is an excellent beginner motorcycle because although they’re small in capacity they have more than enough power to keep up with other road traffic. Larger riders may benefit for the bigger ride ergonomics of larger displacement motorcycles, but a 250cc is usually enough for most beginners.

How much does a 250cc motorcycle weigh?

The average wet weight of the 12 best-selling 250cc motorcycles on the market is 352.7 lbs (159.9 kg).
