This Old Goa attraction dates back to the late 16th century and contains the remains of the St. Francis Xavier . The "Apostle of the Indies" co-founded the Society of Jesus religious order with friend St. Ignatius Loyola and spearheaded an extensive mission in India. The basilica has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1999.

The modest yet imposing structure is a mix of Doric, Corinthian, and Baroque style with intricate carvings. Interestingly, the building was stripped of its lime plaster in the mid-20th century, making it the only church in Goa without plaster. The Basilica de Bom Jesus has since become worn by monsoons.

You can tour the church on your own, or hire one of the independent guides near the entrance for a small fee. Inside, you can see huge ornamental screens, along with the body of the resident saint in a casket that was once covered in precious stones. It's a compelling place that will transport you back in time.

Every year, the Feast of St. Francis Xavier draws big crowds to this church in late November and early December. It kicks off with a nine-day novena and open-air masses before concluding with the major holiday on Dec. 3.

Aquatic adventures go beyond the beach in Goa. The state is also home to Dudhsagar Falls, a spectacular four-tiered waterfall that towers some 310 meters above the earth. It's one of India's tallest waterfalls and a perpetually popular attraction for day trips around Goa and Karnataka .

To reach the falls, you'll need to make your way to the village of Colem by taxi or train. Depending on which train route you take, you may get a glimpse of Dudhsagar Falls along the way. Then, you'll hop aboard a shared jeep through the jungle, passing Devil's Canyon along the way. Around 45 minutes later, you'll scurry over some boulders to finally reach the falls.

The best time to visit Dudhsagar Falls is right after the monsoon , when the water is gushing. Tourists who wish to take a dip can rent a life jacket from vendors at the attraction.

Hot tip: Only 300 jeeps are allowed to enter Dudhsagar Falls every day, although tour operators have been requesting to increase the capacity during high season. Make reservations in advance, or prepare to wait in long lines if you wish to visit.

Goa is home to a ton of markets, but none offer the liveliness or selection of products found at Anjuna Market. For roughly 50 years, hundreds of vendors have been setting up shop on Anjuna Beach every Wednesday to tempt free-spirited travelers with hippy-inspired trinkets and souvenirs.

The flea market is a swirling array of colorful wares, salespeople driving hard bargains, big bags of fresh spices, and street food galore. Make your way to the laid-back city of Panaji to visit another one of Goa's historic churches: The Church of Our Lady of the Immaculate Conception.

The pristine white church, which dates back to the early 17th century, stands atop a zig-zagging staircase that resembles the tiers of a wedding cake. Its perfectly symmetrical Portuguese Baroque architecture is a sight to behold. At night, twinkle lights make the church look like something out of a fairy tale.

While not ornate, the church's interior boasts bright, colorful decorations. Tourists can see the elegant main altar (dedicated to Mary, mother of Jesus) and gilded pillars with elaborate carvings. Vines of blue and white blossoms often adorn parts of the vaulted ceiling around various holidays.

Dec. 8 marks the Festival of Our Lady of the Immaculate Conception , a major holiday at this church. Swing by to see it decked out in tons of colorful lights.

See what houses in Goa looked like during the 17th century at Braganza House, a historical mansion that flanks the village square in Chandor. It's divided into an east and west wing, both of which are available for tourists to poke around at their leisure.

The east wing is home to members of the Pereira-Braganza family. It boasts a massive ballroom with an impressive marble floor, along with a small chapel that contains one of St. Francis Xavier's fingernails. This part of Braganza House also brims with antiques and international artifacts.

The western side preserves the original grandeur of Braganza House. Owned by the Menezes-Braganças, the museum-like space features an expansive library with 5,000 leather-bound books from the private collection of journalist Luis de Menezes Braganza, who played an important role in the Goan independence movement. Tourists can also see breathtaking Belgian glass chandeliers, antique portraits of the family, and Chinese porcelain.

What is the best time to visit goa.

March-May : These are the summer months when Goa gets unbearably muggy with temperatures touching 40ºC (104ºF).

June – September : During these monsoon months, Goa becomes lush green. It is relatively quieter than other months. Most shacks are temporary structures that are dismantled during this period and water sports aren’t going on. But this is a charming time in Goa overall with plenty of restaurants and activities to keep you entertained.

November – February : Winter is the peak season here. Goa being a coastal area is balmy while the inland parts of the country go through typical winter temperatures. The sun is always out and the cool sea breeze blows through from time to time. December is the busiest month as Goa hosts the Annual Sunburn Music Festival which attracts people from all over. Plus people flock in to celebrate Christmas and New Year’s holidays at this party destination.

Verdict: For your first time in Goa, you should visit during the season time, Mid-October to Mid-March , so that you can see all that Goa has to offer. The shacks will be open, beach stays will be available in South Goa and the weather will be pleasant. However, the prices will be higher than any other time of the year.

How to reach Goa?

Goa’s international airport is situated at Dabolim, near Vasco Da Gama, and there is also a new airport in North Goa, Manohar International Airport. You can land at either of these and hire a taxi to your hotel/hostel.

While most cities in India have an organised cab service like Uber and Ola, Goa has  GoaMiles  ( now also an app) that can pass for Goa’s very own Uber. We’ve used it a few times and found cabs at a good rate. You can also opt for the taxis lined up on the road outside the airport (be prepared to bargain and ensure to set prices before the start of the trip) or prepaid taxi stands at airports that have a set price. You can always ask at your accommodation if they provide airport transfers but these might turn out to be costlier.

Local buses in Goa are significantly cheaper but also very inconvenient, as you would have to change multiple vehicles to get to your destination in Goa. Use the local bus only if you’re on a super low budget.

Bus, Cab and Car

You can also opt to reach Goa by an overnight bus or cab from major cities like Mumbai, Pune, Bangalore, and Hyderabad in India. If travelling by bus, Mapusa would be your de-boarding point for North Goa , Panjim for Central , and Margao/Canacona for South .

We’ve driven it down from Pune a few times now and once from Hyderabad. The road is full of potholes as you get closer to Goa. But you’ll cross ghats and waterfalls. It is beautiful!

Goa is also well connected by train to the rest of India. The main train stations are Vasco da Gama (central), Margao (south) and Thivim (north) .

Which area to stay in Goa?

Goa is divided into North and South Goa with its capital Panaji (popularly known as Panjim) located around the centre. For your first time in Goa, it can be confusing to decide where to stay as different corners of the state offer different experiences. In this itinerary, you’ll be staying in both North Goa and South Goa .

Baga, Calangute, Candolim or Anjuna – This is a good option for your first time in Goa as the area is very central so all places to see would be close to you.

However, please note that these beaches aren’t best as they’re the most popular in Goa. Every Tom Dick and Harry visit these beaches so the crowd is also such. However, you purpose of staying around this area is different. You’re here to enjoy the water sports, the parties, the food and maybe even shop a little.

A little further north is Anjuna. While it is not the best location to stay for this itinerary, this area has come up a lot in the past few years so you’ll find a lot of  must-visit restaurants in Goa  around this area.

Palolem or Agonda: For your first trip to South Goa, you should stay at one of these two beaches and explore other beaches nearby. These beaches have restaurants but yet maintain a relaxed vibe so you can enjoy time on the beach. Remember that you should only stay in South Goa beaches beach from October to March as the huts and shacks are mostly dismantled before the monsoons and built back up when the monsoons get over. How to get around Goa?

Taxis are expensive in Goa and not ideal for everyday getting around and sightseeing. Busses are quite cheap but again inconvenient. Instead, opt for a scooty or motorbike for the duration of your stay in Goa. There is no better way to get around as it will give you the utmost freedom. The best bit is that it is inexpensive at about Rs.500-800 a day depending on the season (off-season or peak), type of bike (scooters like Honda Activa, low-end bikes like Bajaj Pulsar or high-end ones, like Royal Enfield) and your haggling skills.

If you don’t want to ride a bike or moped, you can hire a car . Most offer stick shifts so if you don’t know how to drive these, finding an automatic may not be easy. However, we have always managed to find one and so should you. The economy cars usually cost about Rs.1000-1200 per day but may go up depending on the season.

You can get a bike or car on hire easily by talking to your accommodation host or hotel.

The perfect 1 week Goa Itinerary – North and South Goa

The Goa experience is different for every individual depending on their style of travel. It’s never a one size fits all because there is simply so much to see and do. We have stayed in Goa for 2 months and have yet not seen it all. Your personalised Goa itinerary would largely depend on what you enjoy – nature, culture, beaches, partying, etc. In this 7-day Goa itinerary, we’ve tried to include a bit of everything so you can get a true feel of the different sides of Goa and decide for yourself which aspect of Goa you enjoy the most!

Day 1-2 North Goa – Watersports, Shopping, Partying

Stay near the Baga Beach/ Arpora area. Despite being crowded, it is close to a lot of North Goa tourist spots you’ll be visiting. And also, hire a scooty, bike or car. You’ll need it to get around. Prior reservations for restaurants are needed!

Day 1: Beach, Water sports, Party

• Reach Goa and check into your hotel or Airbnb
• Rent a vehicle
• Calangute Beach for lunch at Pousada by the Beach
• Water sports and sunset at Baga Beach
• At night go partying at Hammerz (popular music) in the Baga Area or Las Olas (Bollywood music) at Baga Beach. Or both as they’re close by! Start at Hammerz and end at Las Olas.

Day 2: Cliffside Restaurants, Fort, Sundowner, Party

You don’t need to do all of these things mentioned below. Select the ones you wish to do based on your preferences and how much time you have. I’d recommend not partying till late this night so you can be fresh to explore Goa the next morning.

• Wake up late this day since you’ve partied the previous night
• Lunch:   Titlie OR Antares OR Casa Playa at Little Vagator or Felix OR Artjuna or Vinayak at Anjuna.
• Shop: Now go shop at Anjuna Flea Market!
• Explore Chapora Fort (The movie ‘Dil Chahta Hai’ was shot here so expect it to be crowded)
• Stay for sunset or go for a sundowner to Thalassa closeby
• Dinner at Ida in Vagator
• Party at one of the following – Soro (Siolim) or Romeo Lane (Little Vagator).

Day 3-4: North Goa – Culture, Heritage and Nature

Head for a day trip to Panjim and Old Goa . On this day, you’ll get a good glimpse of Portuguese influence on Goan heritage.

Old Goa Churches : Start with Old Goa, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and see the following churches in this order:

• St. Augustine Church Ruins
• Basilica of Bom Jesus (the most renowned)
• Convent of Santa Monica and The Museum of Christian Art (optional but good)
• Se Cathedral
• Church of St. Cajetan
• Viceroy’s Arch
• Our Lady of Mount Chapel (optional- for panoramic views of the Panjim area)

Going on a tour will help you make the most of your time and understand the significance of Old Goa and its churches. It is highly recommended. We’ve taken several tours by this company and loved all of them.

Lunch : Head for either a local Goan lunch at Kokni Kanteen or Cafe Al Fresco By Cantina Bodeg a for continental food. Both are close to your next stop.

Fontainhas : After lunch, take a walk in Fontainhas – Asia’s largest Latin Quarter that has lanes lined with houses built in the colonial style and painted in bright shades of red, yellow, green, and blue. We highly recommend seeing this area on a walking tour by Make It Happen – only then will you truly be able to appreciate the history and architecture. However, if you don’t wish to take a tour, start your walk at Maruti Mandir or Phoenix Springs ending at the Church of Immaculate Conception. See the colourful houses, click a lot of photos at the colourful wall of Old Quarter Hostel, buy some Azulejo tile décor at Velha Goa Galleria, admire the white façade of St. Sebastian Chapel, and have some bebinca (Goan Dessert) at Confeitaria 31 De Janeiro .

Evening: Get drinks and small bites at Antonio@31 or head for a full-fledged dinner at Black Sheep Bistro . Please check the prices of these restaurants beforehand to see if they fit your budget and make reservations beforehand. You could also go for a fun Pub Crawl instead.

Night: Later you could head to a Deltin Royale Casino (buy tickets online for the best deals) OR go back home to rest for an early morning the next day.

Day 4: Nature and Heritage

Chorao Island and the Salim Ali Bird Sanctuary : Do this either on a tour or go by yourself. You’ll have to take a ferry from Ribandar. Don’t miss the famous Mangrove Broadwalk. It is beautiful. We haven’t been here yet but can’t wait to go!

Lunch: Lazy Goose , Nerul. Reserve the table with the lake view if you can.

Depending on the time you start the day, see one/two of the following attractions. Choose one museum and one fort:

• Houses of Goa Museum (do this only after a walking tour of Fontainhas else nothing will make any sense) OR Museum of Goa (modern art tinged in Goan history).
• Aguada Fort (great for sunsets but crowded) OR Reis Magos Fort (relatively less known and beautiful).

Have dinner in the Candolim, Calangute, or Baga area. There are plenty of good restaurants.

Day 5-6: South Goa – Beaches and relaxation

Now, head to South Goa. Stay at Agonda or Palolem Beach- both are fantastic beaches for your first time in Goa.

But on your way, you have the option of making a few stops.

• Sahakari Spice Plantation: Wonder why the Portuguese were so fascinated by Goa? • Iconic Restaurants: If you’re not in the mood for the above, stop at Martin’s Corner or Fisherman’s Wharf for lunch. They are both very renowned.

Check into your hotel and use this day to do nothing and just relax on the beach, see the sunset etc. Else you could also choose to head to Sundowner Palolem (Bar) for a sundowner!

Day 6: Beaches and Viewpoints

Today is going to be a long day of beach hopping.

Cola Beach: Start your day at Cola Beach. It’s a bit of a hike down to the beach. You can even take the jeep to the beach to save time and effort but it’ll cost a bit. Cola Beach is famous for its lagoon where you can swim and kayak. You can have lunch here before heading to your next stop.

Kakolem Beach: This beach has a waterfall. Yes, you read that right. ( you can skip this beach if you’re running short on time or want to take it a bit slow).

Cabo De Rama Fort and Cabo De Rama Viewpoint for sunset . Both are gorgeous spots with fantastic views – you’ll love the sunset here. You can also choose to have a meal and drink at the Cape Goa restaurant near the viewpoint before heading back to your hotel.

Day 7: Butterfly Beach and Palolem/Agonda Beach

• Butterfly Beach : It’s a beautiful secluded beach. You can hike it to the beach or go via boat but I’ll suggest going as early as possible to avoid crowds.
• Palolem/Agonda Beach : For lunch head to either of these beaches that you’re not staying at. At Palolem, you can have lunch at Dropadi by the beach and at Treetop Tava or Zest (vegan cafe) at Agonda. Walk around the beach later afterwards.

Depart for home this evening.

Tips to Stay Safe in Goa

This guide to Goa would be incomplete if I didn’t mention tips to stay safe there. Goa is really welcoming and locals-friendly. But because it is a  thriving party location and has people travelling from all over, you should take care of the following especially if you’re a woman.

• Don’t hitchhike.
• If you’re a woman travelling solo, preferably rent a car. If you’re a woman travelling in a group, bikes will do. 
• Always get a video of the vehicle hired to avoid being ripped off on returning the vehicle.
• Don’t go out with people you don’t know and never go to parties alone.
• Watch your drink.
• Try to stay vigilant even when drunk.
• Some Indian men can assume friendliness as flirting. 
• Be cautious of theft at your accommodation. Huts can easily be broken into.
• Drugs are available aplenty in Goa. Avoid getting stuck in the middle of a drug racket. 
• Avoid drunk driving. It is being monitored by the police more strictly than before.

17. Hike to the Devil's Finger caves , a short way off from Sinquerim beach. Walking along the outer perimeter of the Taj Aguada, you'll find stunning vistas of jagged black rock cutting into the Arabian Sea, the breeze rustling through wild grass and, at the end, of the trail, jet black caves that look great on the 'gram.

Overlooking the Vagator beach, Sylvia is the sunset bar to have on your radar if you're a gin cocktail fanatic. Try the Gibson Course , a five-course food and cocktails menu that spotlights the bars cool creations.    

23. Vinayak in Assagao is probably going to have a queue as long as its reputation deserves, but there's no chance that you can give the Konkan thali a miss. In the neighborhood for delectable fish thalis , try your luck at Spice Goa (off Highway 92), Anand Bar and Restaurant (on the road between Soro and Calangute) or Star Light in Arpora.    

24. It would be sacrilegious to be somewhere around Anjuna and not queue up at Cream Choc for a taste of the richest gelato you can find in the whole pin code area. Not too far away is Babka , the most popular bakery in this part of the state – should your sweet tooth need more attention. 

25. Load up on your take-home stash of local produce – everything from chorizo to recheado masala – at the vibrant Mapusa market, which is especially fresh and busy on Fridays. 

26. For a truly deserted beach vibe, drive way up north – past Arambol – to Querim beach , the northern-most beach in Goa. There's nothing to come between you, the sea and peace. 

27. Take a quick ferry ride across the river from the Querim jetty, and a short drive into the hills will bring you to Fort Tiracol , a heritage property with a chapel and a statue of Jesus inside. When done wandering, ascend to the restaurant at the top level, for a meal of perfectly baked fish, choriz pao and gin cocktails, and sweeping views of this edge of Goa. 

28. Leave an evening free for bar-hopping on Chapora main street . Make your way through local favourite watering holes like Darling's and Paulo's Antique Bar , before you head up to House of Chapora , near the Chapora jetty, to move to some sharp electronica chopping up the light nip in the air.  

29. If you happen to be in Candolim , make time for India's first alcohol museum, All About Alcohol , where bottles and glasses dating back to the 15th and 16th century, as well as ancient manufacturing and distilling equipment from across India and the world, are artfully laid out. 

30. Ashvem , a much-too-quiet neighborhood during the pandemic, is witnessing a revival in its dining and nightlife scene. There is, always, La Plage for some delectable French fare, but fresh on the block and must-try additions include Amber Cocktail Bar (passionfruit cocktails), Saz on the Beach (outstanding location), and Teresa Beach Club (by the guys behind Sly Granny), to name a few.

People Tree might be gone – with the small perk of more dining room at Gunpowder and, consequently, less waiting time – but Assagao 's abuzz with shops that spotlight products that are local, sustainably built and eco-friendly. Browse through the shelves at Rangeela and Cheshire Cat Gallery .   

32. We hardly need to recommend this, but a pilgrimage to Thalassa is essential. You may not necessarily be looking for Greek food in Goa, but you'll visit on repeat once you've sampled it – somehow even more alluring in its new Siolim location. Pro tip: Plan dinner at Thalassa to miss some of the sundowner crowd, and for evening beers, drive to Uddo Sunset Bar & Kitchen – a hidden gem of sorts located at the edge of a lagoon, where you can kick up with some cold ones and watch the sun sink into the sea right between where Chapora fort ends and Morjim beach begins.  

33. Opt for a morning walking tour through Chandor village (Make It Happen does has nice itineraries), marveling at the Portuguese-style mansions lining streets back to back. Learn of the history of this place, take photos against the marvelous Braganza House , and visit centuries-old places like the Nossa Senhora de Belem church and the Piety Chapel .

36. Take an e-bike tour with B:Live , to explore South Goa neighborhoods of Benaulim, Colva and more, ride  through villages and up into the Sahyadris to catch some clifftop sunsets.  

37. Take a boat trip from Agonda to watch the sunrise, spot dolphins cavorting in the sea and visit neighbouring beaches that are difficult to access by land. 40. Walk around Cazulo Feni Distillery to see for yourself how this local favourite is fermented, processed and has evolved over the years. Guided by owner Hansel Vaz, you'll gain firsthand knowledge of the history of feni, have a scrumptious Goan meal, and most likely learn to love this particular liquor again.   

41. Stop by Cantine Indienne , on the Palolem-Patnem road, where owners Satish Sridhar from Thanjavur and Manon Gingold from Paris combine their powers to present an elegant, inviting menu where a south Indian thali gets seasonal inputs and desserts are vegan (and delicious).     

42. In Quepem , treat yourself to more history at the Palacio Do Deao , a centuries-old Portuguese nobleman's villa that's been lovingly preserved. A guided tour through the house by current owner Ruben and an authentic Goan meal by his wife is just the ticket for a South Goan holiday.

For marine life and environmentalists, a pitstop at the protected, casuarina tree-lined Galgibaga beach will be rewarding, particularly around January-March, when the endangered Olive Ridley Turtles turn up to hatch. There's very little commercial activity – and no loud noises or bright lights of any kind – allowed on this beach. But no one will say no if you turn up by your twosome, picnic basket and frisbee in tow, and promise not to disturb the delicate quietude of this place.

Soulfu l family-run homestay s

To be honest, I had never really experienced offbeat Goa until I stayed at Cancio’s House with the Amaral family in a quintessential Goan village.

Their 500+ year old Portuguese era home is full of untold stories and their drinking water still comes from an ancient well. In the outhouse cottage surrounded by old jackfruit trees, there is plenty of privacy. Yet chances are, you won’t leave without feeling like a part of the 3 generations of this family.

Helene and Derek refurbished their 150+ year old ancestral home – The Secret Garden – so beautifully that it’s hard not to fall in love the moment you enter its little blue gate.

This Portuguese-style home is nestled in one of Saligao’s villages with cobbled streets, home to stunning rice paddies. I felt totally pampered by Helene’s famous breakfasts – home-baked sourdough bread, hummus, vegan sourdough pancakes and Goan savories. And those late night dips in a mostly naturally cleaned pool under a moonlit sky were something else!

Bungalow 598 is an old Goan home turned into a cluster of chic, minimally designed rooms and common living spaces. Glass walls overlook the green Assagao neighborhood in this low-energy, low-waste, hipster space. I loved the creativity of the space and the easy access it offers to North Goa’s best hangout spots. But I sorely missed being able to open my windows to the salty breeze and natural elements.

It takes a while to manoeuvre through the long list of characterless hotels to find offbeat hotels in Goa. But a little bit of research could land you amid the sunny courtyards of the uniquely designed Alila Diwa and its infinity pool overlooking endless rice paddies. Its restaurant Spice Studio serves delicious curries and offers a ‘Dine in the Dark’ experience every month.

When you browse through hotels in Goa, the trick is to focus as much on the Goan authenticity as on your budget.

The rustic eco-huts and vegan-friendly cafe at Saraya operate on a cool concept. You work for a few hours daily, managing the cafe or working in the organic garden, and get food and lodging in exchange. A pretty sweet deal!

Offbeat places in Goa for authentic Goan food

Restaurants like Britto’s and Susa Lobo were once considered food institutions in Goa. But now serve average, ‘nothing like real Goan’ food.

Ditch those, and head to small, lesser-known, family-run restaurants for an authentic taste of Goa.

Royal Fantacy  (Ponda)

On a desperate afternoon of quiet hunger, while driving from North Goa towards a spice plantation stay near Dudhsagar, we decided to take our chances and stop for lunch at the decrepit Royal Fantacy (yes, fantasy with a “c”). Oh what seredipity it was!

Given its vicinity to the spice plantations, my slow-cooked mushroom xacuti was made with aromatic, freshly-ground spices, lending it a flavor so delicious that I still salivate at the thought of it. Totally worth a detour.

Nostalgia by Chef Fernando  (Salcete)

Hugely popular among locals, Nostalgia by Chef Fernando , is set in an old Portuguese house full of character. They’ve dug out Goan recipes that are obsolete or otherwise hard to find in other restaurants.

The big vegetarian (also vegan, since there’s no dairy in traditional Goan food) section is a delight for plant-based eaters. I love their seasonal Goan curries with sana (a small round bread with a tinge of sweetness), along with a refreshing glass of urrak (a local cashew-based alcohol, lighter than feni) mixed with Limca.

Right across the Mandovi River, Voltaire focusses on Hindu-influenced Goan cuisine. It’s the only haunt I’ve found yet that can do a vegetarian / vegan version of udamethi and tonak – both deliciously flavorful curries, served up with une , a local bread similar to pao.

As a vegan traveller , I’ve watched friends relish their fish thalis at Ritz Classic with an empty plate. So imagine my delight when my hosts at The Secret Garden first recommended a neighborhood joint for a vegetarian/vegan thali. Thus began my long, on-going search for Goa’s best thalis!

Some of my current favorites are Wood’s Inn in Porvorim, Manisha’s Home Food and Kokni Canteen in Panjim. The Goan thali experience begins with squeezing alongside locals into a hole-in-the-wall space. A typical vegan thali consists of a mound of rice, seasonal veggies, Goan curries, coconut-flavored daal, grated papad-coconut mix and a spicy kokum to round up the meal. Go hungry!

I’ve written in greater detail about my favorite Goan food restaurants over the years. The food at Andron  in Nachinola is still among the best I’ve had in Goa yet, but call Anthony in advance if you want to eat vegetarian/vegan.

Best cafes for an offbeat Goa itinerary

All the cafes I’ve included in my Goa travel guide are vegan/vegetarian friendly, offer free wifi and remain open even during the monsoon months:

It took me forever to try the food at Bean Me Up , because I typically land up in Goa during the rainy season when it used to be closed. But I finally got beaned up in 2019 – both during a spring trip and their decision to open part of the resto during monsoon.

I now know what the hype is all about – for Bean Me Up serves up an incredibly diverse plant-based menu. I love their ‘taste of the middle east’, Buddha Bowl and tofulafel wrap. Oh and it would be a travesty to leave without trying their insanely good chocolate mousse cake!

Saraya  (Saligao)

I’m almost embarrassed by how often I’ve shown up at Saraya over the years – thanks to their farm-to-table food from their own organic garden!

My favorites are the Summertime Sandwich with minced mushrooms and vegan cashew cheese, the homemade hummus and toasted pita bread, and the wood-fired vegan pizza (served only at night). Don’t miss the lemongrass and mint iced tea!

Ruta’s Roadhouse  (Assagao)

Ruta’s Roadhouse is one of my favorite cafes to work from in Goa. I can see myself sitting by the dome shaped windows overlooking the wilderness on a rainy day, while indulging in homemade hummus and Moroccan style chickpea curry and couscous.

While running errands around Panjim, I make it a point to grab an eggplant-hummus sandwich at Café Bodega . Built around a sunny, green courtyard, it offers respite from the city and would’ve been my hangout of choice if they had more vegan options.

Offbeat things to do in Goa

Something we would’ve never known had our hostess at Secret Garden not tipped us off. Every Sunday morning, locals and expats meet up at Museum of Goa (MOG) in Bardez for a talk / discussion by Goans doing something unique. We saw a short play by a theatre startup, followed by an interesting discussion on Konkan vs international theatre. The following week was a documentary screening by a local artist. I think it’s a great way to connect with the creative side of Goa.

Truth be told, the grey beaches of Goa don’t do much for me. But I’d take the coast in the monsoon over the December crowds anyday – with grey skies, roaring waves and beaches like Little Vagator and Ashwem almost entirely to myself.

Back in the day, I had no idea Goa even had backwaters, let along kayaking on them. Scratching the surface slowly, I learnt from my hosts at Cancio’s House about discovering Goa’s secret mangroves on kayak. So on a rainy July afternoon, we set out rowing into the untouched backwaters of northern Goa. Amid the mangroves, we heard peacock cries and spotted eagles on barren trees – all while getting drenched in the rain. What an experience!

I’m not a morning person, but I made a vow to be awake for more sunrises, and managed it on my last day in Goa this monsoon. I’m glad I did, because seeing those rice paddies shrouded in mist is totally worth it. You can do it yourself, or join a heritage walk (complete with offbeat locations and quirky stories) with Subodh Kerkar, the founder of MOG.

It’s one thing to hit the discotheques in Goa with other travellers, quite another to dance with locals to jazz music at a neighborhood joint (Cantare in Saligao for example) till the wee hours of the morning – it’s not my thing, but it could become yours!

Typically every Monday, the outdoor space of the popular Gunpowder restaurant at 6 Assagao transforms into a space for talks and screenings on a wide range of subjects. I’ve attended multiple talks by environmentalists and NGOs on India’s – and Goa’s – impending water crisis and ecological challenges. It was here that I watched a rare screening of the Konkani film on life in a typical Goan village – an eye-opener for an outsider like me.

If these are subjects that interest you, this is a great opportunity to meet like-minded locals too.

For me, one of the biggest charms of Goa is driving a scooter along the palm-fringed inner roads and the vast rice paddies, through truly susegade Goan villages, away from the traffic and the crowds. The point is not to get anywhere, but to just let my hair down, set my thoughts free, and experience that ‘Goa is a state of mind’ feeling!

No Nasties is the newest kid on Goa’s shopping block. And even for someone like me, who hardly ever shops, I was sold by their organic, fair-trade, vegan clothing. They use no harmful chemicals or animal dyes in their entire supply chain. The clothes range from trendy dresses to cotton t-shirts with trendy slogans. My “who invited the vegan?” t-shirt from No Nasties always draws eyeballs!

See  12 mind-blowing experiences I’ve discovered in Goa over the years. These include visiting one of Goa’s last remaining traditional bakeries and joining a local festival that involves jumping in old irrigation wells!

How to get around

Seriously, rent an automatic scooter and feel the wind in your hair as you whizz around Goa! Look for inner routes on Google maps so you can ditch the crowded highways and main roads.

I love Honda’s new 125cc bikes, but the more easily available Activa is good enough too. Ask your hosts to get you a good deal – usually INR 300 a day for short term rentals, and INR 250 a day for longer stays.

A convenient option to get around on rainy days, or when you need to go a long distance, like from north to south Goa. A basic car like Maruti or Indigo costs around INR 1200 a day.

My least preferred option, but for rides to/from the airport or if you’re not too keen to drive yourself, go with a Goan driver who can also share stories of living there. Ask your host to arrange a local driver for you.

Responsible travel and ecotourism in Goa

Time and again, I’ve heard Goans lament about (and seen for myself) how mass tourism is slowly destroying the beauty of Goa. As travellers, it is upon us to make more informed travel choices and be more aware of our surroundings.

My recommendations in this offbeat Goa guide are all based on responsible travel elements. We can further do our bit to travel responsibly in Goa in these simple ways:

The Goa Responsible Tourism Collective is a collection of accommodations, restaurants, tour providers and adventure outfits with a common vision to protect the environment while offering incredible experiences. It has seriously grown my Goa travel wishlist, especially offbeat things to do in South Goa.

While deciding where to stay and what to eat, choose places owned or run by Goans, that are mindful of the environment. These tend to be more authentic experiences, ensure that tourism money goes back to the locals and are kinder to the beauty of the state.

I picked up a nifty cloth bag that folds into the size of a fist, at the boutique shop at Gunpowder . Although plastic bags are banned in Goa, many small shops still give them freely, and you just have to say no – better still, remind them about the ban. And like anywhere else, carry your own water bottle to refill fresh spring/well water and save money (and trash) on plastic mineral water bottles. Every time you see trash lining the beaches and hillsides, you’ll remember why.

It’s quite awful to see beaches, forts or stretches of rice paddies made popular by Bollywood movies overrun by Instagrammers or groups of boisterous drunk tourists. Be mindful that you’re in someone else’s home. Perhaps drink at home, and go to Goa to savor its natural beauty and unique culture instead?

Goa essentials

The winter months (October to March) are the most popular time to visit Goa, but if you ask me, there is nothing like Goa in the rains .

The cloudy weather makes it much more pleasant to be outdoors than the otherwise hot sun, the rice paddies paint the countryside lush green, and everywhere is relatively less crowded. The perfect time to discover offbeat Goa.

Airtel and Vodafone tend to work well (with 3G/4G) in North Goa, but I remember Airtel giving me trouble the one time I stayed at Agonda in South Goa.

I love that you can walk into a fancy resto or a street market in flip-flops, a casual dress, harem pants or anything you fancy – without being judged. Pack for tropical weather; carry sunscreen, shades and a cap.

Hi, I’ve been following your posts for a month now and it’s truly inspiring. Was wondering you to share few thoughts about communication when you reach a place with totally unaware of it’s language and culture. Did that ever happened?

I try not to let that happen, but even if it does, it’s just about getting on google and reading a little bit about the culture and learning some basic phrases (hello, thank you go a long way). Talk to bilingual local and ask what you need it. If you have a local host, even better. Observe and don’t judge 🙂

Thanks for giving us a view of a different side of Goa. I really enjoyed Panjim, especially the food there, and the beaches are okay, but they are a nice break after Mumbai!

I like Panjim for a city, but I really prefer the lush, quiet interiors over the beaches 😉

Only the couple of interesting restos I came across – Nostalgia and Royal Fantasy. I tried staying in South Goa for a bit this time, but realized I prefer the interiors of the north much more.

A perfect guide to visit original goa which is not only discos & nigh out parties.

I too visited Goa during monsoon and its best during that season. I fall in love with its lush green environment & prefer to travel at less crowded destinations so off season is best time to visit Goa.

I am a traveler myself and I’ve always preferred road trips as it has always given me the ultimate pleasure of sight seeing. I still remember my road trip from Bangalore to Goa. I went with my friends and we made a road trip as usual. We rented six bikes from Wheelstreet bike rentals and trust me that was one of the best trips I ever had. recently we have a plan to go to Mumbai. Wander Through Old Goa

The abandoned city of Old Goa is one of the top historical places to visit in India . In its 16th century heyday, when the Portuguese had their headquarters there, Old Goa was apparently so vibrant it was common for people to say, "He who has seen Goa need not see Lisbon". The Portuguese built many churches and convents, which were declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1986. The most notable ones are Se Cathedral (the seat of the Archbishop of Goa), the Basilica of Bom Jesus (which contains the mortal remains of Saint Francis Xavier), and the Church of Saint Francis of Assisi. Goa Magic conducts an insightful two hour Heritage Walk of Old Goa. With a little imagination, you'll get a feel for its past glory. Visiting the Archeological Museum in the convent of the Church of Saint Francis of Assisi (behind Se Cathedral), and the Christian Art Museum in the restored Convent of Santa Monica, will help! It underwent a four-year refurbishment and has a unique collection of Indo-Portuguese art objects in ivory, gold, silver, wood and textiles spanning the 16th-20th centuries.

Goa Tourism's open-top Hop on Hop Off Bus departs from Panjim and provides an inexpensive way of getting to Old Goa. Tickets cost 300 rupees.

Explore the Latin Quarter

A series of epidemics, including the plague, caused the Portuguese to leave Old Goa in the late 18th century and shift their headquarters to Panjim. The area, known as Fontainhas, was developed into an affluent residential area for rulers and administrators. Today, it's renowned for its colorful old Portuguese homes, belonging to the last surviving Portuguese families of Goa. Fontainhas was declared a UNESCO Heritage Zone in 1984 and it's a wonderfully atmospheric place to spend some time. A few of the mansions have been converted to characterful hotels and guesthouses, so you can stay there as well. Other attractions include boutiques, art galleries, and restaurants. Marvel Over Old Portuguese Mansions

Although there are plenty of old Portuguese mansions in the Latin Quarter, the most opulent and imposing ones are located in south Goa. These homes, which date back centuries, are still lived in by generations of the original owners. Some are open to the public, and they display a treasure trove of historical memorabilia. You'll find them in Chandor (the Braganza House), Loutolim (Casa Araujo Alvares) and Quepem (Palacio do Deao). It's possible to chat to the owners, who have a wealth of knowledge, too!

Visit Reis Magos Fort

There are a number of forts in Goa but Reis Magos Fort is the oldest. The Sultan of Bijapur, Yusuf Adil Shah, built a military outpost there in 1493. Despite its strategic position on the Mandovi River, it wasn't able to stop the Portuguese invasion. The Portuguese developed the fort in 1551 to defend their capital at Old Goa. It was enlarged numerous times and then completely reconstructed in 1707. However, the fort was no longer required for defense after the Portuguese shifted to Panjim. It was converted into a prison in the early 1900s and functioned as such, with more than 100 freedom fighters being held there, before being abandoned in 1993. Restoration of the fort was initiated in 2008 by the late Mario Miranda, a much-loved cartoonist from Loutolim in Goa. It opened to the public in June 2012 and has a gallery displaying his works. Mario's cartoons are centered around daily life in Goa and Mumbai, and they're really entertaining.

Museum of Goa

Founded and curated by artist Subodh Kerkar, the interactive Museum of Goa opened in 2015 within the stark context of north Goa's Pilerne Industrial Estate. This unique museum aims to bring the state's history to life through a permanent exhibition of contemporary art. It also has temporary exhibition spaces, an auditorium, art and design store, cafe, sculpture garden and artists studios. Try to attend one of the numerous workshops, lectures, and performances that are held there. And, if you're interested in buying art, don't miss the annual Affordable Art Fest. The museum is open from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. daily. Tickets cost 100 rupees for Indians and 300 rupees for foreigners. There are discounts for students.

Learn About Farming and Traditional Lifestyle in Goa

Traditionally, Goa's economy was based on agriculture rather than tourism. In order to showcase and preserve this way of life, artist and restorer Victor Hugo Gomes set up a museum called Goa Chitra , with more than 4,000 artifacts on display. Many of them are old farming tools and equipment, as well as other implements including kitchen utensils. Each is supplemented by interesting information about its use. There's also a separate section, Goa Chakra, with about 70 heritage carriages. The museum was constructed on neglected land near Benaulim, in south Goa, out of materials salvaged from 300 year-old Goan houses. A functional organic farm has also been set up next to it, so visitors can understand how some of the artifacts were used. Opening times are 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. daily, with tours conducted every hour. Tickets cost 300 rupees. Discounts are offered for students and groups.

It's even possible to stay on a farm in Goa, with the farmstay concept catching on and growing in popularity. Eco-friendly Dudhsagar Plantation Farmstay is one such place, where guests are accommodated in five rustic cottages on the lush property with a swimming pool. The farm produces everything from spices to pineapples and guided tours are conducted. Mangaal Farmstay is another property that provides guests with the opportunity to participate in activities such as vegetable growing, flower harvesting, and paddy field preparation.

Eat Goan Cuisine and Get a Cooking Lesson

When thinking of Goan cuisine, ubiquitous fish curry and rice probably comes to mind. This is undoubtedly a staple. However, there's so much more to Goan food! Distinctly diverse and non-vegetarian, it's been influenced by its Hindu origins, Muslim rule, and Portuguese colonization.  Xacutti (coconut-based curry), cafreal (marinated and fried/grilled), sorpotel (stew), recheado (stuffed), and ambot tik (sour and spicy) are all types of dishes that are commonly served. And of course, not to overlook Goan chourico (sausages) and Goan pao (bread). Sadly, traditional Goan cuisine is disappearing but move away from the beaches and you'll find some authentic restaurants where you can discover what Goan food is all about. Want to learn to cook Goan food? The classes offered by Rita's Gourmet Goa in Dabolim (close to the airport) and Siolim Cooking School are recommended.

Drink Some Feni

It's almost impossible to visit Goa and not encounter feni, the unofficial state drink. This rather aromatic (some would stay stinky) spirit is produced solely in Goa out of cashew fruit or the sap from coconut palms. You're likely to turn your nose up at the cheap, commercially produced feni due to its smell. The secret is to find home-distilled feni (if staying at one of Goa's homestays or Dudhsagar Plantation Farmstay ), or get it like the locals do from village distillers. Otherwise, a quality bottle of Big Boss or Cazulo is a reliable choice. Drink it with tonic water or lemonade and a slice of lime. For a memorable local experience, order the feni cocktail at Joseph Bar in Panjim's Fontainhas Latin Quarter . This tiny, hip hangout has been recently restored to its former glory. It's open in the evenings from 6-10 p.m. Alternatively, it's now possible to go straight to the source of Cazulo feni -- their cellar in the Cansaulim foothills. The cellar, which is said to the the only one in the world, opened to the public in January 2019. Get a guided tour and feni tasting session for 2,000 rupees per person, including food and alcohol. Music, especially Jazz, is an important element of Goan life. Many Goan musicians learned western styles of music under Portuguese rule, led dance bands in the 1930s and 1940s, and infused jazz and swing into Bollywood music. The elegant century-old Gonsalves Mansion in leafy Campal, near Panjim, is known as the Home of Jazz in Goa. The jazz revival began with many fine jazz musicians playing on its porch. Jazz Goa , a group of Goan jazz musicians, also host live jazz performances. Nowadays, many other venues in Goa have live jazz as well. Monday Jazz Nights at Cantare in Saligao village are legendary. You may also find live jazz jamming sessions happening there on Friday nights. There's a live jazz band every Sunday from noon until 4 p.m. at O'Mistico, opposite the Novotel hotel in Candolim. In addition, Jazz Inn in Cavelossim, and  Jazz and Grills in Calangute (the new Whiskey Bar at Le Meridien hotel), often have jazz bands. Check out the entertainment program on the Deltin Royale casino as well. The annual International Jazz Day is celebrated in Goa on April 30 with special jazz concerts. Plus, there is the Goa International Jazz Live Festival, held by Jazz Circuit India in November or December every year.

Hidden away in the forest at Tambdi Surla, near Mollem National Park, is what's believed to be the oldest Hindu temple in the state. The remarkable, intricately-carved 13th century Tambdi Surla Mahadev Temple is dedicated to Lord Shiva. It survived both Muslim and Portuguese invasion largely because of its remote inland location at the foothills of the Western Ghat mountains. The temple is well-maintained and free to enter. Nature-lovers should also hike up to little-known Tambdi Surla waterfall in neighboring Bhagwan Mahavir National Park.

Sunaparanta Goa Center for the Arts

Goa has some great art and culture spaces for those who are creatively inclined. In the picturesque Altinho hills of Panjim, Sunaparanta Goa Center for the Arts houses several exhibition galleries, a library, a large multi-functional space for workshops and lectures, an open-air amphitheater, and a courtyard with outdoor cafe. Apart from exhibitions, Sunaparanta hosts events such as book releases, lectures, musical performances and theater presentations. Do check their calendar of events. Alternatively, head to Sadhana Dell' Arte in another refurbished century-old Indo-Portuguese mansion, this one in Merces. It offers an artist residency, an art gallery, a co-working space, and cafe. One of the aims is to promote local artists and culture.

Experience a Festival

Many Christian festivals are celebrated in Goa, including Christmas . A number of these festivals take place during the monsoon season. On June 24, Sao-Joao (the fertility feast of Saint John the Baptist) features men jumping into overflowing village wells to retrieve bottles of local feni alcohol. The feast of Saints Peter and Paul happens on June 29, with people sailing up river on rafts performing plays and songs. In late August, the Bonderam flag festival is held on tiny Divar Island, off the coast from Panjim. The Goa Carnival is another famous festival, which usually occurs in February each year. Shigmo is a Hindu spring festival that's Goa's version of Holi . Goa also celebrates Hindu festivals including Ganesh Chaturthi and Diwali .

The construction of this fort was done by Alfonso de Noronha, the Portuguese Viceroy in the year 1551. The fort was reconstructed in the year 1707. This fort served as a pivotal site by becoming a defensive wall when the Portuguese were at war with the Marathas in the year 1739. Most mainstream tourists visit Goa in a fairly standard manner. They visit the beach close to the area, plan trips to a few major tourist attractions in Goa and breeze through them quickly and in a rather disinterested manner, they eat their hearts out at the famous restaurants in Goa, party at nights and leave.

There are a number of reasons why engaging offbeat activities in Goa would be more rewarding to you as a tourist. Some of those are

• The touristy side of Goa is usually crowded and completely lacking in charm.
• The cafés and restaurants are fairly commercial and modern and not representative of local Goan culture.
• Many key tourist attractions are not maintained properly or lack touristic information boards and panels giving you little idea about the significance of the place.

What kind of offbeat things can you do in Goa?

The offbeat things that I am referring to are things that can be done by all types of tourists.

In fact, some of the offbeat activities that you will read about in this post are those that can be easily added to your itinerary without adding any extra time or days. Some others would include adding a few days’ time to your trip and some activities would include basing yourself in a less touristy part of Goa.

Visit regular tourist places in a non-touristy manner (1-3)

This way of adding value to your existing Goa trip is the most recommended because you just have to make minor tweaks to your itinerary and the quality of the experience would be greatly enhanced.

1. Heritage walk

Instead of taking a casual walk around the beautiful churches and cathedrals of Old Goa, sign up for a heritage walk.

A heritage walk is the most beautiful way of visiting Old Goa. It can be taken by people across all age groups. An expert guides you along the many heritage structures of Old Goa. You get to learn so much about Goa’s rich history, Portuguese rule, local customs, and traditions in a manner that’s fun and engaging.

The heritage walk that I highly recommend is this one . It is conducted twice a day and is widely popular. Make sure you secure a spot by booking it at the earliest.

By the end of the walk, you would be fascinated by the history of Goa and would want to learn more about it.

2. Dolphin tour

Dolphin trips do not always end up in a dolphin sighting. But you can improve your chances by

• Going around 10 am
• Going on a weekday

Basically going at a time when there aren’t too many boats in the sea helps. When there are too many boats, dolphins go much deeper and rarely surface above the waters.

3. Eagle feeding

I never thought I would go on an eagle-feeding boat ride in my life. But that opportunity came to me when I ventured a little farther away from the touristy side of Palolem beach and checked out the backwaters.

Near the backwaters, ask a local about the eagle feeding ride.

• needs to be taken in the early morning for higher eagle-feeding chances
• lets you see many more beautiful birds
• takes up hardly an hour

The whole trip leaves you awestruck. The vibe of the calm backwaters with chirpy birds is totally worth waking up early on a Goan morning. Plus the precision with which eagles swoop down to catch food is a true sight for sore eyes!

If you take a similar trip from Chorao island, you can even spot camouflaged crocodiles!

Visit non-touristy beaches (4 – 8)

4. betalbatim.

• Betalbatim glows on certain nights of the month because of a concept called ‘bioluminescence’. If you are lucky to head to Betalbatim on one such night, you’re in for a treat.
• The best time to catch it is on a clear winter night i.e. between the months of October to February.

(Unfortunately, I have never been able to see this natural spectacle.)

• But even then every visit to Betalbatim feels remarkably calming. The beach is almost completely deserted throughout. There are no shacks or shops around. This means the beach is remarkably clean. Even a short 15-minute walk on this beach can feel recharging.
• Location: Just 10 mins from Colva beach, 20 mins from Madgaon

5. Talpona Beach

Most people assume that Palolem is the southernmost beach in Goa. But it’s not. There are a couple of beaches further south.

The one that’s my favorite is Talpona. Talpona is just 15 minutes away from the Karnataka border.

Talpona beach is one of the best offbeat places in Goa because

• Talpona beach is also called Turtle beach. One area of the beach is restricted as it is a turtle nesting area.
• The beach has no shacks and is probably the cleanest beach in Goa.
• It is the most soothing place in Goa to watch a sunset from.
• Talpona is generous with its natural beauty. The palm trees fringing the coast, the soft golden white sand, the rocks along the coast and the clear blue water are a sight to behold.

Location: 15 mins from Palolem

6. Patnem Beach

If you don’t want to go to an absolutely deserted beach (because that’s not your vibe and I get it!), opt for Patnem instead of Palolem.

Patnem is Palolem’s southern neighbor. It is definitely a bit more vibey than Betalbatim and Talpona because of the presence of a few beach huts and shacks.

But even then it is far more peaceful and rejuvenating than the more buzzing Palolem.

Things to do in Patnem:

• Sunset watching
• Playing beach games
• Taking a yoga class

Location: 10 mins from Palolem

7. Keri Beach/Querim Beach

This North Goan beauty is unlike any other beach in North Goa.

Hardly any tourist ventures up to Querim Beach and that’s what makes it offbeat.

Things to do at Querim

• Visit the lush green hilltop sunset view
• Go to the nearby cave
• Sit and admire the sea from the Ajoba garden. Mumbaikars would find the place similar to Marine drive but far more clean and more scenic. (Ajoba in Marathi means grandfather and I find the name of the garden adorable!)

Location: 1 hour away from Baga beach

8. Cola beach

I know that with the massive popularity Goa enjoys on Instagram, Cola beach is no longer a beach tourists don’t know of.

But even though many people know about the beach, very few tourists actually visit the beach because of how difficult it is to access.

You can visit Cola beach

• by boat from Agonda beach or
• by foot from a path through Samyama Retreat

Things to do at Cola Beach

• Stay at Blue Lagoon
• Visit the blue/emerald lagoon
• Go paddling
• Forget your worldly woes!

There is a world beyond beaches in Goa where you will find greenery, wildlife, heritage, bonding, and spirituality.

9. Tambdi Surla

• Tambdi Surla is a 12th-century Shiva temple.
• It is one of the best-preserved old temples in India
• The temple is surrounded by greenery and flowers on all sides. You will also find lots of monkeys in this area.
• It is significant because it is the only Kadamba architecture structure in all of Goa.

I was smitten by the atmosphere at this temple. The temple’s raw beauty is unlike most Indian temples. There is no grandeur and opulence but sheer purity of design.

Location: 1.5h away from Colva/Madgaon, located inside Mahaveer Wildlife Sanctuary

10. Waterfalls

Goa has so many waterfalls and yet the only one that people visit is the Dudhsagar waterfall.

But look beyond it and visit waterfalls like the

• Arvalem waterfall or
• Tambdi Surla waterfall or
• Netravali waterfall
• Chorla Waterfall

Visiting a waterfall is one of the best things to do in Goa during monsoons.

11. Visit a natural spring in Goa

Most people who visit Goa never visit a natural spring.

But those that have visited a spring think of it as one of the most unique things to do in Goa.

Some natural springs that you could visit are

• Pomburpa spring (30 mins from Old Goa) – visit in May, water has medicinal properties
• Udear spring (30 mins from Colva)
• Ambora spring (30 mins from Colva) – excellent free and natural fish pedicure

12. Go for a trek

Have you tried trekking in Goa? There are plenty of options that most tourists do not know of and don’t participate in. But if you are interested, here are a few good hiking or trekking options in Goa:

Dudhsagar falls trek:

• Best during monsoons
• Takes approximately 6-8 hours one way
• Involves walking on a railway track and through a railways tunnel

Netravali waterfall trek:

• Takes about 1-2 hours one way
• Involves crossing a stream ( use the best waterproof shoes for trekking ) and walking on slippery paths
• The trail is very scenic and refreshing
• Avoid visiting during heavy rains

Butterfly beach trek

• Takes about 1 hour one way
• Involves walking through dense trees on a secluded road
• Go from the Leopard Valley or the Butterfly café
• Strictly avoid close to sunset and at night

In addition to these treks, you will find plenty of smaller and mid-sized trekking routes in the sanctuary areas and the cliffs surrounding various beaches e.g. Tambdi Surla trek, Arambol trek, etc.

13. Visit Goan caves at Arvalem

I have no idea why tourists don’t flock these caves. I think these caves are extremely significant because

• they are a rare archeological structure in Goa that dates back to somewhere between the 4th and 6th century. Most other temples in Goa are from the 12th and 13th century or were constructed during the Portuguese rule.
• they are beautifully maintained

This truly rare location in Goa is also called the Pandava caves as it is believed that the 5 Pandavas lived in these 5 caves. You will also find Shivlings inside the caves. Some believe that the caves were used by Buddhist monks.

However, no matter which historical theory is true, the fact is that, they are a rare, unique and a very ancient construction located about 30 mins away from Old Goa.

Plan to visit for 15-20 mins and then proceed towards Arvalem falls.

14. Islands in Goa – ebike tour

Goan territory includes the mainland that we all visit as well as a few islands surrounding the mainland like Divar Island and Chorao Island.

The islands have their own charm because they are sparsely populated, less commercial and completely in their raw form.

• To reach Divar or Chorao island, you need to take a ferry from Ribandar jetty in Old Goa.
• You can transport your two-wheeler to the island and explore the island on your own.
• Divar features some beautiful churches while Chorao hosts the famous Dr. Salim Ali Bird Sanctuary (details above). Both the islands are excellent spots to go on a boat ride in the Mandovi river and do some bird watching and crocodile spotting.

15. Wildlife Sanctuary

Visiting a wildlife sanctuary in Goa is a very fulfilling experience. A trip to a wildlife sanctuary allows you to spot animals on a jeep safari, visit dense forests, see gushing waterfalls and go on treks.

• The biggest sanctuary in Goa is the Mahaveer Wildlife Sanctuary which is where you will find teh Tambdi Surla temple as well as the Dudhsagar falls. There are plenty of overnight stay options here for those that love wildlife exploration.
• The other popular sanctuary in Goa is the Bondla Wildife Sanctuary . If you want to visit a zoo and spend just half a day away from the bustling beaches of Goa, visiting this sanctuary is ideal.
• Mhaidei sanctuary is one of the least popular sanctuaries in Goa amongst tourists. But it is home to a wide variety of animals (including Bengal tigers) and birds. Besides safaris, it is also an excellent place for white water rafting.

16. Cabo de Rama Fort

Most people who visit Cabo de Rama, only visit the viewpoint – a large open plateau with a view of the coast of Goa.

But the fort that sits next to the viewpoint offers better views.

The fort is not maintained well at all but still holds significance as being a protection fort in the Southern region of Goa.

Visit the fort for

• photoshoots and Instagram pictures
• better views of the ocean
• climbing down to the small and stunning Cabo de Rama beach

17. Dr Salim Ali Bird Sanctuary, Chorao

Dr Samil Ali Bird Sanctuary is located on Chorao islands.

A visit to the bird sanctuary transports you to the true home of the birds. The place feels completely disconnected from the urbanness of the rest of Goa.

The best thing to do here is to follow the natural trail created inside the sanctuary and take in the sounds and the visuals of the birds surrounding you.

Watch out for snakes. Avoid going here with young kids. The path’s is uneven and narrow with water bodies on at least one side.

18. Visit the navy museum

Goa is the home of the only naval museum in India and yet tourists conveniently skip it.

The highlight of the naval museum are the large naval aircrafts exhibited here that you would never get to see elsewhere.

The museum is managed well and has excellent facilities for tourists of all age groups.

19. Visit The Friday Night market at Vagator or the hippie market at Arambol

With so many shops around all the major tourist places in Goa, why is visiting a flea market an offbeat thing to do – you’d wonder!

But here’s the thing, the flea markets are not worth a visit only for the stuff they sell but more so for their ambience.

Friday Night Market, Vagator – it’s an all-night market with live music, lots of shops by locals and foreigner settled in Goa, excellent local and global food. It presents a unique setting to spend a night out in Goa.

Arambol Hippie market – This is a market where foreigners living for long periods of time in India sell stuff on the beach. The stuff sold here is unique compared to other shops in Goa. It is worth a visit for shopping (if you’re a foreigner) and for a newish experience (if you’re a curious Indian)

Try out local stuff (20-24)

Your list of offbeat things to do in Goa should not be limited to places alone. Expand your scope to experiences and you will be surprised by how much more you could upgrade your Goa experience.

20. Try feni

Feni is a local alcohol made from cashews or coconut.

It has a very high percentage of alcohol and the chances of you hating the taste are high because of its strong odour and taste.

But once you get used to it, it will give you a ‘high’ like no other fancy drink sold in Goa.

Now the best way to taste feni (without the risk of getting sloshed) is by going out on a Feni and Tapas tour . It’s probably the best food and drinks tour in Goa where you walk through the streets of Panjim learning more about Goa’s feni culture. You also get to sample some Goan delicacies all in an immersive setting.

21. Learn fishing

Fishing is one of the primary professions of local Goans. But fishing is not an activity that has been widely converted into a touristic offering. (although I sincerely hope that it becomes more mainstream!)

So if you do get a chance to learn fishing from a local, it would definitely be one of the highlights of your trip.

22. Eat Ros Omelette

It’s disheartening to mention Goan staple foods and drinks in a list of offbeat things to do in Goa. But unfortunately majority of tourists visiting Goa never connect with the soul of Goa.

The best way to find that connection is by sampling (or rather hogging on) local Goan dishes like Ros Omelette or Xacuti. Pair them with the many varieties of Poi and delight your taste buds.

Visit any of the street stalls away from the beaches. Stalls that don’t even have a name are some of the most authentic.

23. Try out a local fish thali at a less touristy place (e.g. Green view bar, Naguem)

Eating a fish thali at a popular place like Ritz is an experience most tourists enjoy.

But visit a less touristy place like the Green view bar, Naguem. It would be a humble place with plastic chairs and a table with a family member serving you food for a very inexpensive price.

But the experience is humbling because of the taste of the freshly made food and the warmth of its owners. Vegetarians, kids and older members of the family would feel far more looked after here than at a more commercial seafood joint.

24. Work at a coworking space in Goa (NomadGao)

Working at a holiday destination like Goa can evoke mixed feelings – the joy of getting to work from such a beautiful place and also frustration for having to work when at a holiday destination like Goa.

A good way to navigate that emotional dilemma is by ensuring that you work from one of the prettiest work cafes in all of Goa – NomadGao at Assagao and Anjuna. Take a day pass and spend your time working with a view, lots of free coffee and a fun bunch of people just like you for company.

Take up classes or adventure activities (25-28)

Even though the activities mentioned below may seem a bit commercial, they are all far less popular amongst regular tourists to Goa. Most tourists visiting Goa only engage in the watersport activities like parasailing, banana ride, jet ski, etc. available on leading tourist beaches.

25. Surfing

Even though Goa has a massive coastline, it has never been a popular surfing destination. However, the surfing community in Goa is growing rapidly thanks to the surfing classes that have opened up at a number of beaches in Goa.

Surfwala in Arambol has amazing lesson options ranging from 1-day, 3-day, and 5-day lessons to surfing camps.

26. Kayaking

• Kayaking is more widely available across Goa.
• You can get kayaks on hourly rents for about INR 500 at Agonda, Palolem, Talpona etc. You can also go kayaking in the rivers of North Goa like Baga river, Siolim river, etc.
• You can even go kayaking at the picturesque Sal backwaters. It’s a two-hour ride taking you through the prettiest kayaking location of Goa amidst mangroves. 27. Bungee Jumping

Goa now has a few truly world-class bungee jumping platforms.

Most of the platforms are fairly new and have only gained popularity recently.

Try out the one by Jumpin Heights Goa – it is run by the same company which is hugely popular in Rishikesh. It’s located at Bicholim and is just an hour away from Baga & Calangute. The setting is over Mayem lake and extremely scenic and the quality of equipment is top-notch.

28. White water rafting

What makes white water rafting a true one-of-a-kind experience in Goa is that it’s only available in Mhadei river in Mhadei Wildlife Sanctuary.

The route takes you across 10 km-long stretch of river. You will be surrounded with nature in all its glory as you make your way through the many sections of the sanctuary.

The route is ideal for first-timers as well as experienced rafters.

Offbeat experiences (29-32)

29. Attend a Yoga retreat in Goa

Have you considered staying at a Goan Yoga retreat? If not, it’s definitely worth considering.

A typical yoga retreat requires you to stay in-house for at least 4 days. You will go through extensive yoga lessons taught by experts.

It’s one of the most sought after Goa activity amongst foreigners visiting India for slow, long-term travel.

The one that’s particularly popular amongst Indians and foreigners is the Asthanga Vinyasa Kranti Yoga.

You could also take up a yoga class from one of the many at Palolem ( check the options listed here )

30. Attend a cooking class in Goa

• Learn cooking from women of a small project community
• Location: Anjuna
• Cook up to 5 dishes in the traditional style – sitting on the floor, using typical Goan-style utensils. Understand Goan food practices and learn more about Ayurveda. See details and book class

31. Stay at a heritage property

Heritage properties in Goa book fast because very few are open to tourists.

Some of the best heritage properties that are open for tourists are

• WelcomHeritage Panjim ( see details and availability here )

32. Check out the drum circle at Arambol

At Arambol, every evening on the beach, a bunch of people gather with their percussion instruments and get the place dancing to their beats. The style of playing, the acts performed, and the number of participants changes everyday as most of it is unplanned and improvised on the spot.

Watching the drum circle perform and tapping to their beats is truly one of the best ways to spend an evening in Goa.

Even though the drum circle had disappeared in the last two years, it is slowly making a regular reappearance again. Do check out if it’s back in its full glory when you visit Goa.

Where should you stay in Goa?

Given how spread out things in Goa are, deciding where to stay can often feel confusing.

My quick recommendations are as follows:

For heritage walks, dolphin tours, cooking classes, and other local experiences: Stay in North Goa between Candolim and Vagator

For non-touristy beaches: stay in South Goa near Palolem or high up in North Goa near Arambol

For wildlife and trekking: Stay in Colva or directly inside the wildlife sanctuary like Mahaveer Wildlife sanctuary.
