Tips for Visiting African Lion Safari

Feel like you live with a bunch of Monkeys??? Well why not take them to go visit some actual monkeys and many other animals at African Lion Safari . Great news for 2023 as they will be opening May 6th for another Wild Season. African Lion Safari has made some changes to the ticketing prices.

Kate has visited multiple times over the years. Erin and Thumper had season’s passes back in 2019 and we had a great summer visiting 4 different times, she can’t wait to repeat with Thumper who is now 4 and Squeaker who will be about 16 months this summer! Kate and Erin would highly recommend a visit to African Lions Safari, or if your looking to see animals at a smaller scale checkout our Guide to the Best Farms and Petting Zoos in Ontario .

WHAT IS AFRICAN LION SAFARI?

African Lion Safari is dedicated to the conservation of declining wildlife species and is a drive through Wildlife Park. They also offer many animal shows, playrounds for kids, splash pad/water play opportunities, a small train and boat ride. For a full description of attractions, scroll down below.

WHAT ATTRACTIONS ARE AVAILABLE FOR 2023 AT AFRICAN LION SAFARI?

Game reserves –.

African Lion Safari

Offering visitors the choice of taking their own car or taking the bus to drive through 9 kilometres of trail, through 7 large Game Reserves featuring Nairobi Sanctuary, Simba Lion Country, Timbavati Lion Country, Wankie Bushland Trail, Rocky Ridge Veldt, Australasia and The Americas, giving visitors an upclose views of wild animals in their natural surroundings.

Kate visited on one of the hottest days of the summer and enjoyed the air conditioned bus tour through the game reserves.  I would highly recommend taking the bus tour, not only is it a comfortable ride where the kids can move from side to side to see the animals, but you also get to learn about the animals from the African Lion Safari Staff.  Our guide pointed out animals that I would have never spotted on my own and was able to tell us about the personalities and relationships of all of the different species.

Both the boys had a great time on the Safari tour and loved watching the animals roam and play.  Plus if you take the bus there is no risk of damage to your vehicle from a curious monkey or migrating buffalo!  My favourite animals on the safari were the Rhinoceros’ munching away on their breakfast and the baby monkey who was playing and chasing its mother around.

Nature Boy Scenic Railway

Enjoy a 15 minute ride aboard The Nature Boy Scenic railway that takes you around the park to enjoy exotic species from around the world, as you explore 16 hectare of reserve on a replica 1863 C.P. Huntington St

African Queen Boat Tour

Jump aboard a short boat ride as your tour around Safari Lake and enjoy as your captain guide points out unique primates including White-handed gibbon, Ring-tailed lemur, Black-handed Spider monkeys and Robust Black Spider monkey.

Animal Shows

African Lion Safari

Offering many live shows including: Parrot Paradise and Birds of Prey. Pending update on 2022 shows if Elephant Shows will return. While you are visiting African Lion Safari you can catch bird and animal shows that run several times a day.  It is an amazing sight to watch the Indian Elephants march in line down to the lake for a swim.  They are so graceful and playful in the water.  The Elephant swim was definitely a highlight of the day.

Venture Playground

African Lion Safari

African Lion Safari offer two different playgrounds: Safari Venture and Toddler Playground. Height restrictions apply.

African Lion Safari Playground

Misumu Bay Waterpark

African Lion Safari Misumu Bay

Cool off after a hot day on Safari in Misumu Bay! Stroll through Sprinklers, Spouts, Spray Buckets and Stream Jets in the interactive waterplay area. Trek under Rain Trees and Tumble Buckets in the main waterplayground, or enjoy one of the many slides. To enjoy the slides and Tumble buckets you must be 38 inches tall. For toddlers they have a bouncy swing and a small toddler slide as well as a shallow splash pool.

african lion safari playground

The day Kate visited African Lion Safari it was over 35oC so a trip to Misumu Bay Splash area was a welcome relief from the heat.  This expansive water park has areas for older and younger children.  Little Bear had so much fun in the bouncy seats in the toddler area while Monkey played on the slide close by.

When Erin visited in 2019, Thumper loved the slide in the toddler area and it was the perfect size that at about 18 months old she could climb the stairs and slide on her own while Erin waited at the bottom.

THINGS WE LOVE ABOUT AFRICAN LION SAFARI:

One thing Kate and Erin both loved about African Lion Safari on their visits is that the grounds of the park are not that big, you could walk to the far end of the park in about 10 minutes.  This is perfect as you can leave a picnic lunch, extra drinks, swim gear, stroller etc in the car and just pop back to get it whenever you need them without having a long trek to get back to the parking lot.

But don’t let that short walk to the car make you think that there is not much to do at African Lion Safari, because that is FAR from the truth!  Take a short boat cruise around Water Safari Lake to explore the islands and the creatures that live on them.  Or a train ride on the scenic railway to get a chance to spot turtles and many other species of animals including deer.  The train was a huge hit and we rode the rails 3 times during our visit.

Tip: Pack a Picnic Lunch and find a spot by the Elephant Swim Pond and plan your lunch for a time where there is an Elephant Swim, it was a blast to enjoy the outdoors, eat lunch and watch animals in their natural habitat.

AFRICAN LION SAFARI SEASON PASS PRICES FOR 2023

Children who are turning 3 years of age on or before June 30, 2023 require a child’s Season Passport, photo ID may be required when issuing passports.

IS AN AFRICAN LION SAFARI SEASON PASS WORTH IT?

I found that the African Lion Safari Season Pass was a great deal for my family in 2019! If you have kids who love animals, and waterplay then this park is a GREAT VALUE for you! Like most season passes, you have to visit just 3x to make back your money as based on 2022 rates, it would cost an adult $82 plus tax for 2 visits or $96-106 (depending on when season pass was purchased) making the third visit basically free. The season pass offers you unlimited admission from May until October, I make it a plan to visit atleast once a month in June-August to ensure I get my value and any other visits are a BONUS!

OFFERS SEPERATE AREAS FOR KIDS UNDER 6 – I really enjoyed that this park was the perfect size and took a good amount of time but not the whole day to explore making it perfect for a daytrip with a toddler. I love that they offer a seperate toddler playground and toddler waterplay area which make this park a great investment especially for those families with kids under the age of 6 years old. Misumu Bay Wetplay is worth a full day visit on it’s own as this is by far my favourite Waterpark in the Greater Toronto Area .

-> 20% off food and non-alcoholic beverages at all on-site food service locations (excluding vending carts) -> 20% off gift shop merchandise at all on-site Safari Gift Shops (excluding batteries or sale items) -> Discounts to select off-season events, hosted by our onsite catering company, Classic Catering -> Special promotions exclusively for Season Passport holders

We always have such a fun day at the park I can’t wait to go back this summer to do it all again!  You can find all the details you need to plan your own wild adventure on their website and be sure to check out their pinterest page to see photos of all of the amazing animals at the park.

Oh wow this looks super fun! I was wondering why I had never heard of it and realized it is in Canada. I have it on my “to-do in Canada” list now. = )

Oh, this looks amazing! My kids would totally love it! I wish it was close enough for us to go to!

That looks so fun! I can’t believe how many big animals they have!

What a fun place that would be! Each year we go to the zoo, but couldn’t this year because of the flooding {they had to close down most of the zoo because of damage}. I miss our annual trip! 🙁

How fun!!! My kiddos would definitely enjoy this! Who am I kidding? I would enjoy visiting 🙂

Neat! I’ve been to Africa and remember seeing so many of these animals in the wild. I’d love to go someday so the kids get the chance to see them too!

Looks like an awesome attraction to visit with your family. Unfortuntely, we have not been there, but will put it in our agenda for next summer.

Many years ago, my husband and I and our 4 daughters (5 – 14) drove from Victoria to my husband’s moms place in Font Hill Ontario. We took a day trip to this place and the girls all enjoyed it! The baboons (we think they were baboons) got a piece of our van, but it was all good lol

Oh wow! I would love to go. My toddler and younger brother would enjoy these animals so much!

I have such fond memories of going there as a kid – would love to take my boys. Looks like a fantastic day!

we went a few weeks ago and loved it. It was a cooler day but everything was perfect. My fave is the elephants and dd loved the splash pad. Looks like you had a blast

Working there would be even better!

looking forward to taking all 6 grandchildren to African lion Safari this summer. It is only 30 minutes away

My advice is to take the tram bus, so the monkey’s can’t wreck your car

this is so cool, Ive never been but I swear, one day Ill go with my family, and well have such a blast!

We managed to get 3 of the grandkids to African Lion safari and had a wonderful time. They loved going through the safari on a tram, visiting and staying for hours in the waterpark and watching the elephants having a swim

Oh my,this looks amazing!

What a fun tour, I love that you had a guide and airconditioning!

My grandkids would totally love it there

I’ve never been to a safari park but I would love to. I think the bus tour is a really good idea, as you said you learn a lot more that way plus no danger of damage to your vehicle either 🙂

I’ve never been to a safari park but this is something I would love to do,maybe some day

What at great place for a family to spend time together.

I haven’t been here in years…..some great changes have been made here. Love that there is a splash area for the kids!

Very cool I would love to visit there

I did not realize there was so much to see and do here. Looks like I will have to have a visit one day. Looks like so much fun and I know hubs would enjoy it also. It now is going on my bucket list.

African Lion Safari: A Seriously Exotic Day Trip to Hamilton

MyHamilton logo

If you have yet to experience “Canada’s Original Safari Adventure”, make this the year for this unforgettable day trip to Hamilton.

African Lion Safari’s expansive drive through reserve lets families get closer than they ever imagined to some of the world’s most exotic species. Located just an hour’s drive from Toronto and around an hour and a half from Buffalo and Niagara Falls, it’s easy to get to one of Ontario’s most popular tourist attractions.

Family-owned and uniquely Canadian, African Lion Safari was founded by Colonel Gorden Debenham Dailley, who in 1968, set off to create a new attraction in Canada: a drive-through wildlife park. It started with just 40 lions. There’s now over 1000 animals, 100 different species and 750 acres of parkland.

Walk, drive, cruise, and journey along the railway through different areas of the park to discover the wide range of attractions here.

Game Reserves

In African Lion Safari’s unique Game Reserves , the tables are turned. Visitors are “caged” in their car while animals get to roam throughout the reserves. Get your cameras ready as you settle in your own vehicle and embark on a nine-km drive through seven distinct, large reserves including Nairobi Sanctuary, Simba Lion Country, Timbavati Lion Country, Wankie Bushland Trail, Rocky Ridge Veldt, Australasia and The Americas. You can view over 1000 exotic birds and animals, many of which are classified as endangered or threatened. (You can hop on a safari tour bus instead for an extra fee.)

Other Attractions

African Queen Boat Cruise

On a sunny day, pack your swimsuit and hit the wet zone at Misumu Bay Wet Play Area (open between May 19 and September 3). This adventure area features sprinklers, slides, jets, and more!

Daily Presentations

At various times throughout the day, visitors can catch one of four presentations to learn about the animals that call African Lion Safari home. In Parrot Paradise , visitors can watch in awe of their intelligence; see hawks, eagles, owls, vultures and falcons in the Birds of Prey Flying Demo ; and learn about various reptiles in Little Ray’s Nature Centre.

Wake Up The Wild: An Experience to Roar About

Have you ever wanted to come within a metre of a rhino, zebra or ostrich, or hand-feed Canada’s largest herd of giraffe? What about witness a pride of lions at their most active time of day? Designated an Ontario Signature Experience by Destination Ontario in 2015, Wake Up The Wild is African Lion Safari’s exclusive VIP experience available on select days throughout the season, ideal for families, couples, or a fun gift! During the adventure, a Game Warden takes you on an off-road, private guided tour to spot wildlife in an open air truck.

Insider Guide to African Lion Safari With Kids

Insider Guide to African Lion Safari WIth Kids

Less than 100 km from downtown Toronto, African Lion Safari is a truly immersive animal adventure, with exciting, up-close looks at uncaged, wild animals. And w ith the African Lion Safari’s focus on wildlife conservation and the breeding of endangered animals, you can enjoy a really fun day while feeling good about it, as your entrance fee helps contribute to research projects and species reintroduction.

Live Animal Attractions

There are attractions for children of all ages to enjoy. Close vicinity to wild animals and exotic birds, water play fun, playgrounds, shows and demonstrations, and train, boat, and bus rides will keep kids entertained all day long.

Game Reserves Tour

You can drive your own car or take the Safari Tour Bus (pictured above) through the Game Reserves. The bus is an extra cost ($5.25/adult, $4.95/child), but you are treated to a wealth of information from the drivers, who begin training and memorizing their spiel a month before the park opens. Baboons hop on roofs, rhinoceroses run right in front of you, white lions stare you down from their rocky perch. It’s an amazing experience!

One word of warning: I have heard of cars having their antennas torn off by an eager monkey, or sides dented by a grumpy giraffe. So the bus may be your best choice.

Insider Guide to Ontario's African Lion Safari

African Queen Boat Cruise

This open-sided boat cruises around a small lake (a pond, really), with little islets holding monkeys, lemurs, and pelicans. Make sure to sit on the right side of the boat for the best view!

“Nature Boy” Scenic Railway

The little train toots around another pond, and you may only see swans and a lot of Canada geese, but it’s a nice, breezy trip that takes you beside the elephant area, and you can see a variety of owls while you stand in line.

Insider Guide to African Lion Safari With Kids

Pets’ Corner Petting Zoo

Signs posted all around African Lion Safari warn you not to feed the animals, but the one area that encourages animal feeding is the Pets’ Corner petting zoo. Purchase provided food pellets to gather the goats, deer, and alpaca to your side.

Elephant Swim

An added bonus to bringing your own lunch and eating around noon is that the elephants walk right by the picnic table area to go for their daily swim at 12:30 pm. You can gather by the water and watch them frolic (with a couple of friendly dogs), splash one another, push each other under the water, and sometimes spray the crowd.

Insider Guide to African Lion Safari With Kids

Pony Rides and Elephant Rides

Pony rides and elephant rides are offered near the elephant lookout for $6 and $10, respectively. I would advise you to skip the pony ride, as your child will be walked slowly exactly once around a small ring. Definitely not worth $6. But perhaps the novelty of sitting on the world’s largest land mammal may be worth the money for elephant riders.

Bird Aviaries

The bird aviaries house a huge variety of winged creatures, from kookaburras and cockatiels to bald eagles and flying fox bats. You can walk around and look at your leisure. The birds of prey are beautiful and powerful looking, but I suggest avoiding feeding time if your kids (or you) are squeamish. It’s the stuff of nightmares.

Kids’ Play Spaces

There’s a lot to look at, but sometimes kids just want to play!

Misumu Bay Wet Play

With a lot of open space, it can get quite hot, so the water play area is a cool relief. With sprinklers, play structures, small water slides, and dumping buckets, kids can run around and get wet in this fenced-off area while parents cool their feet in the shallow water. Bring bathing suits for the kids!

Insider Guide to African Lion Safari With Kids

Safari Venture

Safari Venture is a climbing structure with a ball pit and slides—a perfect place to go a bit wild.

Toddler’s Playground

A tamer version of the playground for little ones, the toddler’s playground has some small climbing structures and slides.

Signature Shows

African Lion Safari has three open-air, interpreter-led presentations in which they showcase the talents of their birds and animals: Parrot Paradise, Birds of Prey, and Elephant & Friends. The show schedules are posted right near the bird aviaries, and shows last about 20 minutes each—perfect for shorter attention spans! You’ll hear a lot of “oohs” and “aahs” as the creatures show off their skills.

VIP Experience

On the privately guided Wake Up the Wild tour, you enter the park before it opens to the public for a behind-the-scenes experience watching the lions have their breakfast, hand-feeding giraffes, and going off-road in an open-air truck to see the animals up close. For ages 8 and up, Wake Up the Wild is open to groups of up to 12 people and is $99/child (ages 8–12) and $119/youth or adult (ages 13 and up).

Essential Information

Season:  Early May–late September

Address:  1386 Cooper Rd., Hamilton.

Hours:  Late June–August, daily 9 am–5 pm; May–late June and September, daily 9 am–4 pm; drive-through game reserves open at 10 am

Admission:  $38 adult (13–59), $28 child (3–12), free for ages 0–2; prices vary by season. Parking is included in park admission.

Insider Tips

Get there early! The later in the day, the longer the lineups. And the safari bus books ups quickly. Also, it can get quite hot later in the day in the height of summer.

Bring swimsuits.  Make sure the kids bring their bathing suit so they can cool down in the water play area.

Bring your own lunch.  The prerequisite fast food restaurants are available, but there are several picnic tables and shaded areas at which you can enjoy your own food.

Consider renting a stroller or wagon. Rentals are just $5 and $8, respectively. But they (along with car seats or boosters) cannot be brought on the Safari Tour Bus.

Take advantage of the birthday bonus.  The safari doesn’t host birthday parties, but they do offer free admission for kids ages 3–12 within a week of their birthday (with photo ID).

Recommended Game Plan

On my family’s trip (in July), I worked out what I believe is the perfect schedule:

9:50 am: Arrive a bit before 10 am and purchase your Safari Tour Bus tickets for 11:15 am

10 am: Ride the African Queen boat close to 10 am

10:30 am: Climb aboard the Nature Boy train when it opens at 10:30 am

11:00 am: Get to the Safari Tour Bus 10–15 minutes ahead of your 11:15 departure for the hour-long ride

12:15 pm: After the hour-long Safari Tour, eat your homemade lunch

12:45 pm: Spend some time visiting the water area, checking out all the exotic birds, and having fun in the playground

2:00 pm: Catch the shows—the three shows have start times at about every half-hour after 1 pm, with the last show between 4 and 6 pm, depending on the day or season. (Arrive a bit early: it’s first-come, first served.)

African Lion Safari in Ontario

African Lion Safari

Unlike the traditional zoo where visitors freely roam the grounds observing animals in cages, the African Lion Safari near Toronto , Ontario, is set up to allow visitors to drive at their own pace around multi-acre reserves in which the animals roam freely.

Open daily between May and October, the African Lion Safari also stages animal shows and workshops and has a splash pad and playground.

Though the African Lion Safari is more acceptable in terms of animal welfare than zoos and amusement parks like the atrocious Marineland in Niagara Falls , which has been criticized for its animal cruelty, the elephant shows and rides at the African Lion Safari do seem archaic and humiliating to the animals while offering no educational value for viewers.

Tips for Visiting

Dennis Jarvis / Flickr / CC BY-SA 2.0

  • Driving your own vehicle around the animal reserves is at your own risk. Baboons have been known to jump on and scratch cars, pull at antennas or remove windshield wipers. Take the Safari Bus if you are concerned about your car being damaged.
  • If you decide to drive your own vehicle, you have the option of a monkey-free route; monkeys tend to be the biggest car hazard.
  • The park is less busy and not so hot if you arrive for the 10 am opening.
  • As with most theme parks, food is generally unhealthy and overpriced. Pack a picnic lunch or at the least bring a snack and a water bottle.
  • July and August can be very hot; be prepared with water, sunscreen, hats, and bring bathing suits for the kids to take advantage of the splash pad.
  • Slightly rainy days are good days to visit, with fewer visitors and animals that are more active than on very hot, humid days.
  • If you want to see some of the shows (Birds of Prey, Parrot, Elephants), find out their start times before you do anything else, and plan your activities around these times.

See the Animals

Derek Hatfield / Flickr / CC BY 2.0

Animals wandering the African Lion Safari reserves include giraffes, zebras, rhinoceroses, ostriches, lions, cheetahs, baboons, and more.

Birds of prey, including eagles, hawks, owls, vultures, and falcons as well as parrots can be seen during demonstration and shows.

Gentle animals, such as baby goats, can be handled and pet at the Pets' Corner.

How Much Time to Spend at the Safari

African Lion Safari

Visitors should plan on spending at least three hours at the African Lion Safari. The drive through the animal reserves takes between an hour and two hours, but the other amenities will keep you at the park for longer. Many people arrive for the 10 am opening and stay the whole day.

Getting There

Google Maps

Located in a rural part of Cambridge, Ontario, the African Lion Safari is about an hour from Toronto and 1.5 hours from Niagara Falls. Note that depending on your source, the location may be given as - not Cambridge - but Hamilton or Flamborough.

The route is marked clearly with blue Ontario attraction signage.

While You're in the Area

Little Louie's Burger Joint & Soupery

  • Where to eat:  Enjoy delicious Mexican food in a casual atmosphere at Latinoamerica Unida. Slightly more sophisticated than a food truck, Little Louie's Burger Joint & Soupery serves up delish fast food.
  • Where to stay: Several hotels are in the vicinity of the African Lion Safari - mostly mid-range. Homewood Suites by Hilton is particularly convenient for families as each guest room has at least one bedroom plus full kitchen and double sofa sleeper. If you're looking for something a little swankier, Langdon Hall is a Relais & Chateaux property in the area.
  • Other attractions: A lot of green space, farmland, and conservation areas surround the African Lion Safari. Some charming towns within 20-minutes travel include Elora and Fergus - famous for 19th-century architecture and a preserved mill - and St. Jacobs Country - popular with tourists because of the hiking trails, strong Mennonite presence, and artistic offerings.
  • The Donkey Sanctuary of Canada is a less touristy, quieter way to observe animals roaming freely, namely, donkeys who have been rescued from abuse and/or neglect.

African Lion Safaris

Encounters with the icon of africa.

The true icon of Africa’s Big Five, the African lion is the symbol of strength and power, the epitome of any safari to wild Africa. Today, catching sight of this apex predator is one of the most sought-after prizes for almost every safari-goer, with regal prides located from East to South.

Observing the social aspect of lions' lives is one of the most memorable elements of an encounter with the species. Out on the wild African plains, females stalk big game as they feed on tasty grasses, prides nap in the shade and cubs play under the watchful eye of their mothers as males fight for the crown. Exploring via game drives and even walking safaris, witness the wild behaviours of these magnificent mammals.

Where can you see the African Lion?

African Lions are found in sub-Saharan Africa, with 80% of the population in eastern or southern Africa and three of the five largest populations in Tanzania. African Lions used to be found across most of the continent, but in recent decades they have disappeared from 12 sub-Saharan countries.

THE AFRICAN LION

  • Lions are notably the only sociable big cat, with prides formed of a few muscular males, crowned with a thick mane and measuring up to 3.5m long and up to 272kg.
  • Most of the hunting is done by the smaller more agile females, weighing between 110 kg and 168 kg, who will work together to hunt anything from small antelope up to buffalo and even giraffe; in Savuti in Botswana, they have learnt to hunt young elephant.
  • The males will often get involved to help tackle the dangerous animals. Males have a large mane of hair which can be beige or black depending on the individual and the area they live in.

African Lion Safari Destinations

  • Masai Mara National Reserve: A great place to see lions year-round in the flat, wide and open plains of the Masai Mara. In July, 2 million wildebeest cross the Mara River under the eyes of the hungry lions.
  • Serengeti National Park: Three of the five largest lion populations are in Tanzania and the Serengeti is one of the best spots to see lions due to the availability of food and the million wildebeest.
  • In Southern Tanzania, Ruaha National Park is one of Africas hidden treasures with only 6000 visitors a year. Second to the Serengeti, Ruaha is home to 10% of the worlds lion population so there is great opportunities to see lions around less safari vehicles.
  • The Ngorongoro Crater offers the oppourtunity to see the Big 5 in a different setting, in the worlds largest inactive volcanic caldera.
  • Okavango Delta: The Okavango Delta is the best place to see water-adapted lions in Africa, these lions are 15% larger than others and have adapted to hunting during the day when the buffalo are grazing. The permanent water and nutritious grasses makes the Okavango Delta the perfect habitat for buffalo and you may witness lions fighting them here.
  • Kruger National Park: Most of South Africa’s lions can be found in Kruger National Park. Being the size of Wales, it can be hard to find them, but South Kruger has way more lions as it is wetter and greener. We recommend staying at Sabi Sands, which is one of the most reliable places to see lions in Africa. Timbavati is also the best place to see white lions in Africa.

Lions are highly adaptable, and in Namibia you will find ‘desert-adapted’ or ‘desert-lions’, that have adapted to survive in the harsh landscape of little vegetation and prey. The best places to see lions in Namibia is in Kaokoveld and Damaraland, but be aware these lions are nomadic and you are not guaranteed to see them.

African Lion Conservation

In just 25 years, Africa’s lion population dramatically dropped with only 50% of their numbers remaining across the iconic landscapes of the continent. The IUCN classified these majestic creatures as “vulnerable” as a result, a subject of habitat loss and fragmentation, illegal wildlife trade, poaching and human-lion conflict.

It was as a result of this revelation that the Lionscape Coalition was formed, in response to the growing threat of extinction and the predictable knock-on effect this would have on Africa’s biodiversity. Lions are classed as an “umbrella species”; with a wild lion population thriving, the entire surrounding eco-system functions effectively, ultimately also affecting the livelihoods of those relying on ecotourism for survival. The Lionscape Coalition sees four commercial competitors, who share the bold vision of the Lion Recovery Fund (LRF) to double wild lion numbers by 2050, collaborate on lion conservation programmes across Africa. Putting all commercial considerations aside, this alliance brings to this initiative over 100 years of positive conservation and community impact throughout Africa.

Lions are a resilient species so the future looks bright. These animals will rapidly reproduce if their habitats are protected if communities have incentives to co-exist and protect them. Creating healthy ‘lionscapes’ which can benefit these local communities is key to the success of population decline being reversed and many other species will recover in the process.

When is the Best Time to See African Lions?

The best time to see lions is during the peak safari season from July to October. The cool, dry winter means less vegetation for wildlife to hide behind and the lack of rain means wildlife will congregate around the lakes and rivers and most wildlife wont stray too far from the little water left.

African Lion Safari facts for kids

African Lion Safari is a family-owned safari park in Southern Ontario , Canada, straddling the cities of Hamilton and Cambridge , located 100 kilometres (62 mi) west of Toronto . Guests may tour seven game reserves, with a total area of about 740 acres (300 hectares), on tour buses or in visitors' own vehicles, where animals roam freely in contained areas. Accompanying the game reserves is a walking section where exotic birds and primates, as well as the park's herd of Asian elephants, are on display.

African Lion Safari is an accredited member of the CAZA , and is also a member of the World Association of Zoos and Aquariums (WAZA), the International Elephant Foundation (IEF) as well as the International Association of Avian Trainers and Educators (IAATE).

This safari park was founded by Gordon Debenham "Don" Dailley, a retired Canadian Army colonel, and opened its doors on August 21, 1969. Dailley initially partnered with the Chipperfield family from England to purchase four farms in the Rockton, Ontario area totaling 250 hectares (620 acres). He bought out the Chipperfields in the early 1970s. It remains privately owned, and the only significant feature was the drive-through reserve. In 1971, the park began working with Asian elephants , and in 1985 they started to make a concentrated effort to breed Asian elephants. Over the years, successful breeding of 30 endangered species and 20 threatened species has occurred in the park.

Common Eland African Lion Safari

On any of the seven reserves, visitors are caged in their car and the animals roam in large enclosures that range from 2 to 20 hectares (4.9 to 49.4 acres).

In the Nairobi Sanctuary , visitors can see Watusi cattle , llama , European white stork , Egyptian goose , and East African crowned crane . The reserve consists of a large grassy field.

Between the Nairobi Sanctuary and the Simba Lion Country is the Cheeta breeding Center , which is home to cheetahs . This preserve features several enclosures where the cheetahs live either separately or grouped.

Simba Lion Country is home to African lions . The reserve consists of, like the other reserves such as the Nairobi Sanctuary, a grassy field. This reserve is notable because it has a structure made out of rocks so the lions can rest.

Timbavati Lion Country is home to white lions , also known as Timbavati lions. This reserve also has a rock structure for the lions to rest or play on.

Wankie Bushland Trail is home to olive baboons, bongo , miniature zebu , and malaysian tapirs . The baboons' tower is a house and a playground for them.

Rhino at the African Lion Safari

The Rocky Ridge Veldt includes Rothschild's Giraffe, Grant's zebra, Wildebeest , Eland, Barbary sheep, Ostrich , White Rhinoceros , Addax, and Scimitar-horned Oryx . This reserve is grassy with shelters and shade structures and several piles of rocks for animals to climb on.

The Australasia reserve includes Himalayan Tahr, Tibetan Yak , Nilgai , Indian Rhino , Western Grey Kangaroo , Red Kangaroo , Red-Necked Wallaby , and Sicilian donkey . In smaller fenced areas on the periphery of this reserve are enclosures for Turkmenian (Bukharan) Markhor , Sichuan takin, This reserve is a mix of trees, grass and pond.

The North America reserve is home to American bison , North American elk , Spotted fallow deer , and Markhor . This reserve is grassy.

The African Lion Safari offers two tours for no additional charge; the first one is by boat around a lake whose islands are inhabited by various primates, and the second by train through a natural wetland.

There is a boat ride called the African Queen . On the African Queen, visitors will see Black-handed Spider Monkey, White-handed Gibbon , Siamang , Black-and-white Ruffed Lemur , Marabou Stork , Ring-tailed Lemur , Robust Black Spider Monkey, Pink-backed Pelican, and black swan .

The Nature Boy is a scenic railway that travels through natural forest where visitors see native wildlife and several exotic species such as Fallow Deer and reindeer .

African lion safari Petting Zoo

The park is involved in the International SSPs for Asian elephants , cheetahs , white rhinos , and cinereous vultures . It has provided captive bred barn owls , burrowing owls , trumpeter swans , ferruginous hawks , and a bald eagle to reintroduction programs for release into the wild.

The park currently claims to have the most successful Asian elephant breeding program in North America, and in 2008 became home to the first third generation Asian elephant in North America. It has received several CAZA awards, including those recognizing outstanding achievements in the care of both cheetahs and giraffes.

In 2010, "Jake" became African Lion Safari's first successful Asian elephant birth from an artificial insemination, and the first birth of this kind in Canada.
