Thanks for your feedback.

...now that Microsoft OWNS bethesda though...would that mean the only hold up would be...paramount/cbs?

Yes, they would have to pay them a very large licensing fee for a game that wasn’t very good and very few people liked

Unlikely on its best day.

This has been a burning question I keep an eye on - so first I want to say thanks for asking it, Legacy was much more enjoyable than I initially gave it credit for. Simply having all our favourite Captains contributing their voice overs immediately scored massive points for me. Then there was simply operating each of our favourite ships - I found it to be a very competent game in this regard, and let's face it, for us older gamers who remember those golden years during the 90's where there were plenty of space sims to choose from, Legacy was a very welcome addition to our libraries.

I can appreciate that due to Bethesda being brought to heel and added to the Microsoft family, priorities won't be on bringing a game well over a decade old back into the limelight. But it is severely regrettable that many less-deserving (imo) games have been integrated into current lineups - my 360 barely functions but I'd be lying if I didn't think about Legacy each time my eyes land on the dusty machine in the corner of the room.

For any Trek fan, no matter which show you claim to be the king, there's so much to enjoy in Legacy that it can still hold up and should have that chance to be enjoyed by fans new and old.

At least I know I'm not the only person who remembers this game fondly, it's the least it deserves.

Licensed games of all kinds get left behind. It’s the nature of the beast. They’d be far better off spending that money making a better game, or just getting Ubisoft to port Bridge Commander, which is the best Trek game ever made in terms of experience.

Xbox backwards compatibility list, with all Xbox 360 games and original Xbox games playable on Xbox One, Xbox Series X

A list of every supported Xbox game, from Alan Wake to Zuma, on Xbox One and Xbox Series.

Xbox backwards compatibility of Xbox 360 games was Microsoft's big surprise back at E3 2015, and since debuting the feature later that year, the publisher rolled out new releases on a month-by-month basis.

Though Microsoft wound down its original Xbox and Xbox 360 back compatible efforts in mid-2019 in favour of Xbox One support for Xbox Series X - which also supports a range of improvements - there was one final update in November 2021 as part of Xbox's 20th anniversary celebrations, adding another 76 games and adding additional enhancements to existing ones.

While both downloadable and disc-based Xbox 360 and original Xbox games work on Xbox One and Xbox Series X, only selected games are supported on a case-by-case basis. From fan-favourite Xbox Live Arcade games to some of the biggest Xbox 360 exclusives such as Gears of War 3 and Halo: Reach, the roster represents a wide selection of some of Xbox's greatest hits.

As well as the above lists of supported Xbox One and original Xbox games, the Xbox Series consoles also offers backwards compatibility to Xbox One games and peripherals (including the Xbox Elite Controller and Xbox Adaptive Controller) in what Microsoft describes as "our most powerful and compatible console ever".

In a blog post in July 2020, Microsoft said: "It's our intent for all Xbox One games that do not require Kinect to play on Xbox Series X at the launch of the console."

Backwards compatible supported games on Xbox Series will benefit from several system-wide features:

  • Backwards compatible games will run natively on Xbox Series X hardware, offering potentially higher framerates and resolutions, plus "significant reductions" in load times using the SSD. In early Digital Foundry tests , it offers "up to double the performance in the most demanding games".
  • "Select titles" can have framerate doubled, going from 30fps to 60fps, or 60fps to 120fps.
  • HDR will be supported across backwards compatible games thanks to a "reconstruction technique", even going back to original Xbox and Xbox 360 games.
  • All titles will support Quick Resume, a system-wide feature which allows you to stop progress of multiple games and continue playing them later.
  • Xbox Series S will offer Xbox One S-level backwards compatibility, whereas the Xbox Series X will offer Xbox One X-level backwards compatibility. In a nutshell, this means X will run up to 4K, whereas the S will run up to 1440p - just like other Xbox Series games.
  • Xbox Series S will also introduce "improved texture filtering, higher and more consistent frame rates, faster load times and Auto HDR", according to Microsoft.

As well as broad backwards compatibility support for Xbox One games, select Xbox One games will also see specific Xbox Series versions for free as part of the Xbox Smart Delivery system.

In November 2021, as part of Xbox's 20th anniversary celebrations, over 70 new titles were added from the original Xbox and Xbox 360. These were confirmed to be the last backwards compatible games to be introduced on later Xbox consoles "due to licensing, legal and technical constraints".

The experience varies from game to game. According to Digital Foundry's report , all titles receive some baseline improvements - such as the elimination of screen tear "completely on every title" - through to any disc access operations tending to "have less of an impact on performance", meaning Mass Effect's elevator load times and Fallout 3's hitches are reduced.

However, while less demanding games such as Braid and N+ perform flawlessly, the more CPU-heavy titles do struggle, with Halo: Reach and Gears of War: Judgement singled out as games that suffer in the emulation process.

In terms of features, Xbox 360 backwards compatibility on Xbox One supports:

  • Digital and disc-based games at no additional cost
  • Support for existing saves (through the Cloud), DLC, Achievement progress, and the original dashboard
  • Multiplayer between those playing on Xbox 360 and Xbox One
  • Select Xbox One system features, including Game DVR, Windows 10 streaming and screenshots

Many Xbox 360 games are also currently available on Microsoft's Netflix-style Xbox Game Pass subscription service.

Fluctuations in the list of compatible games over time [ ]

The original list was composed of 213 games and was unveiled on 2005-11-11 on the Xbox website; however, some games have been subsequently removed due to bugs.  Check out this announcement

Six games were removed from the list: Codename: Kids Next Door - Operation V.I.D.E.O.G.A.M.E. , Curse: The Eye of Isis , FIFA World Cup 2002 , NBA Live 2003 , Rugby 2005 , Star Wars: The Clone Wars (works only in Europe)

Seven games were removed temporarily and later added back: Blinx 2: Masters of Time and Space , Catwoman , Grabbed by the Ghoulies , Legends of Wrestling , Mortal Kombat: Deception , Pariah , and Sid Meier's Pirates! .

He-Man: Defender of Grayskull remains on the list despite the fact the game was never released (it had been cancelled by the developer before completion). The Japanese version of the console was initially compatible with only 12 games, while the European version had 156 games.

The last update for Xbox 360 backwards compatibility in North America was 2007-11-27, raising the total number of Xbox games compatible with the Xbox 360 to 478 . Approximately 51% of the Xbox library is now compatible with the Xbox 360 (as of the 2007-11-27 update). The latest European update was in November 2007, now with a total of 476 compatible games. The latest update for Japan was released on 2007-11-28, with 122 working games.

These updates can be downloaded automatically from Xbox Live , from Xbox.com (USA) , or a disc can be mail-ordered from Microsoft "soon". [1]

How compatibility is achieved [ ]

According to Microsoft, each game needs an emulation profile to run. These profiles can be downloaded through the Xbox Live service or from Xbox.com and burned on CD or DVD recordable media. They are also routinely distributed as part of the content on the Official Xbox Magazine monthly discs. The profiles are downloaded as a single bundle, and hence only need to be applied once per update (if doing so offline), or are automatically downloaded the first time a compatible game is inserted.

The Xbox 360 hard disk is required to play the games on this list. The hard disk is used not only to store the emulation software, but also to store saved games, store downloaded content, and to serve as a data cache for titles which utilize disk caching. Since games for the Xbox were designed with the expectation that a hard drive would always be available, most titles rely heavily on the presence of one.

An early version of the emulator for playing Halo: Combat Evolved and Halo 2 offline was included with the Xbox 360 hard drive at launch. Xbox 360 hard drives manufactured later include updated emulation profiles which allow a greater range of titles to be played out of the box without updating. Whenever a new set of emulation profiles is released, drives manufactured after that date automatically include the latest update.

The Xbox controller is not compatible with the Xbox 360, due to its different connector and its marginally different button layout. Specifically, the white and black buttons are not to be found on the 360 controller, having been replaced by the "bumpers" found above the left and right triggers. When playing an Xbox game on the Xbox 360 (using an Xbox 360 controller), the white button is mapped to the left bumper and the black button to the right.

List of compatible titles [ ]

In the following chart, any Xbox game with a "Yes" for its region will work in that region, and only in others which also have "Yes" (although cross-region compatibility is not guaranteed). "Yes" in the 60Hz column indicates that the PAL title supports 60Hz output mode, and thus is compatible with the Xbox 360 VGA cable.

A game with "Yes" in the widescreen column has built-in support for widescreen, and will fill high definition displays. If the widescreen column is "No", pillar boxing is used to preserve aspect ratio on high definition displays. Note that all compatible games will stretch to widescreen (potentially distorting the aspect ratio) if the Xbox 360 is configured for standard (480i / 576i) or enhanced definition (480p / 576p).

Any game not on the list at all does not work in any region at present.

Compatibility [ ]

When an Xbox game has been emulator patched in accordance to Microsoft instructions it may still refuse to play on the Xbox 360. The following error message displayed on the Xbox 360 dashboard signifies this failure:

This message is identical to the one displayed when trying to play an unsupported or unpatched game for the first time. At this time no reference to the significance of the X and B variables can be found on the Microsoft Xbox website. This may be related to international region compatibility; a Microsoft disclaimer notes

Note that Microsoft terms the compatibility of Xbox titles on the Xbox 360 consoles as "backward compatibility" whereas in fact it is the console that is being made backward compatible, and the titles are being made forward compatible.

PAL games that do not support PAL-60 cannot be played using the VGA HD Cable. Microsoft has an article on this here .

Additionally, a number of titles are technically compatible, but still contain emulation errors or glitches . These are often minor, but can still include problems with graphics, sound, loading/saving, or gameplay. In some cases, Microsoft has subsequently updated the emulation profiles for individual titles, such that incidence of these issues is reduced or eliminated.

Occasionally, switching from 720p/1080i/1080p mode to 480p will make a previously unplayable game workable (assuming it's on the BC list).

Currently the only way to transfer save files from the Xbox to the 360 is via a special transfer kit which requires the original system's memory card or a modded Xbox. Without modding an Xbox, this also limits saves that can be moved to those that can be stored on a memory card. Some game saves on the original Xbox could not be moved due to either file restrictions or size limitations.

Another limitation applies to downloadable content. No content can be moved between systems. Free content can simply be downloaded again on the 360, but due to purchased content being assigned to systems instead of user accounts, any content purchased on the original must be purchased again on the 360.

All The Xbox Backwards Compatibility Games

Looking to see if one of your favorite classic Xbox games is backwards compatible on newer systems? This list will let you know which game made the cut.

By Darryn Bonthuys on November 22, 2021 at 5:18AM PST

One of the major aces up the sleeve of Xbox has been its focus on backwards compatibility. Announced all the way back at E3 2015, backwards compatibility on the Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S covers a large chunk of the original Xbox and Xbox 360 library of games, mixing together a highlight reel of classic titles across a wide variety of genres.

Even better, a number of these games also sport several additional features at no extra charge. As detailed in our Xbox backwards compatibility guide , improvements to frame rate, load times, and image quality can be found on dozens of titles, and if you own them on disc or digitally, you won't have to pay to play these games.

It's worth noting that several of the games below have received remasters and have been bundled into dedicated collections over the years. Several Halo games for example are only playable from disc, but their digital versions can be downloaded through the Master Chief Collection. A rare handful of games are only available digitally, some are region-exclusive, and other games have been delisted over the years.

With the Xbox backwards compatible program having concluded , the library of retro games is a strong collection of greatest hits and quirky indies. We've gathered them all up below, so if you're looking to see if a specific game is compatible on your Xbox One or Xbox Series X|S console, remember that CTRL+F is your friend here.

How xbox backward compatibility works: the definitive games list.

You can play Xbox 360 and original Xbox games on your Xbox One and Xbox Series X/S. Here are all the games that work.

Quick Links

How does xbox backward compatibility work, are xbox one accessories compatible with xbox series x/s, does xbox backward compatibility cost anything, can i buy xbox 360 and xbox games from the online xbox store, can i use xbox 360 game saves on xbox one or xbox series x/s, which original xbox or xbox 360 games are backward compatible, which xbox one games are incompatible with xbox series x/s, full xbox backward compatible game list.

The Xbox Series X and Series S are both fully backwards compatible with almost every Xbox One game. They can also play a lot of Xbox 360 and original Xbox games, too. That's a huge incentive for gamers who choose Xbox. Not only do they get the best Xbox One and Xbox Series X/S games to play, but they can also dip into a big library of compatible titles stretching back to the start of the 2000s. Plus, many of them are available as part of Xbox Game Pass .

But what games can you play from former console generations, and how does the process work? We explain all there is to know about the Xbox backward compatibility system here.

Best Xbox for beginners: Top consoles for new gamers

The Xbox One and Xbox Series X/S are able to play Xbox 360 and original Xbox games through emulation software that makes your console think it's a last-generation machine for the purposes of playing classic games. When a supported game is started on the machine, the current or last-gen console opens the emulator and, in all regards, the game works as if it was running on an Xbox 360 or 2001 Xbox. The opening screen appears first then the game will load.

Digital downloads and hard-copy discs

Xbox backward compatibility works with digital content as well as disc games. In fact, if you enter a supported disc into your Xbox One or Series X, the machine will download the game from the Xbox store first -- although you will need the disc to be in the machine each time you play. This cannot work on an Xbox One S All-digital Edition or Xbox Series S, of course, as they do not feature disc drives. If you own a digital copy of a supported game it appears in your games list ready for download. Check your My Games & Apps hub to see if any are listed among the games yet to be installed.

New features for old games

All other aspects and features that would normally be available on an Xbox 360 or Xbox are available on the Xbox One/Series X/S too, including the hub on the former (which can be opened through a simultaneous press of the menu and view buttons on the Xbox wireless controller). All new features of the more recent Xbox consoles work, too, including the ability to take screen grabs and record and share video of gameplay .

What is Ultra HDR? Everything you need to know about the new imaging format

Xbox Series X/S owners get additional bonuses too, with the latest consoles able to play many (if not all) of the backwards compatible Xbox 360 and Xbox games with Auto HDR enabled. This adds virtual high dynamic range contrast and colors to make the titles look better. Plus, many titles have FPS Boost enabled. This ups the frame rate the games play in, which provides a smoother experience.

In addition, playing backward compatible games on newer consoles can significantly improve performance , sometimes doubling framerates, reducing load times, and using better techniques to filter textures.

Many Xbox One accessories are compatible with Xbox Series X and Series S consoles. Xbox says that the following accessories are compatible:

  • Xbox Wireless Controller (Xbox One & Windows)
  • Xbox Elite Wireless Controller Series 2
  • Xbox Adaptive Controller
  • Xbox One Stereo Headset
  • Xbox One Stereo Headset Adaptor
  • Xbox One Wired Chat Headset
  • Xbox One Play & Charge Kit -- via USB-C cable
  • Xbox One Chatpad
  • Razer Turret for Xbox One
  • Razer Kishi for Android (Xbox) -- via remote play
  • PowerA MOGA XP5-X Plus Bluetooth Controller -- via remote play
  • 8BitDo SN30 Pro for Android -- via remote play

Xbox offers backward compatibility for free. If you own a supported game already, you don't have to pay anything to play it on Xbox One or Xbox Series X/S. Obviously, it costs to purchase new Xbox 360 or Xbox games that work on the machine.

Many of the games with backward compatibility are also available as part of an Xbox Game Pass Ultimate subscription . For $16.99 or £12.99 a month, you get access to more than 400 games to download and play on your console, made up of a mix of classic Xbox 360 and Xbox games, plus many more Xbox One and Series X/S titles. You also get online gaming access through Xbox Live Gold, EA Play, Cloud Gaming, and even Game Pass for PC.

Xbox Game Pass Ultimate (3 months)

Three months of Xbox Game Pass Ultimate includes access to hundreds of Xbox games, plus EA Play, Cloud Gaming, online play and more.

Yes, compatible Xbox 360 and Xbox games are listed for purchase on the Xbox game store. Prices vary, but start at around £5 / $5.

If you originally set your Xbox 360 to save games to the cloud, you can download the save files to the Xbox One or Xbox Series X/S and carry on. The cloud files are permanently associated with your gamertag, so the Xbox should do this automatically. If you only saved your in-game progress locally, to the hard drive, you will need to restart your Xbox 360 and save it to the cloud instead. If you no longer have your Xbox 360, you won't be able to access the files.

Considering the first-gen Xbox didn't save games to the cloud in the same way, you can't carry on with old save games.

There are 100s of Xbox 360 titles available as part of the backward compatibility scheme and a decent selection of original Xbox games. Games like the original Guitar Hero and Rock Band series won't work as they require proprietary accessories that aren't compatible, nor do any that require the original Kinect motion camera. Even if you shave an Xbox One Kinect, it isn't compatible with previous Xbox 360 Kinect games.

Almost every Xbox One game is compatible with the Xbox Series S or Xbox Series S, but a few are not. Because the Xbox One Kinect doesn't work with the Xbox Series S or Series X, all Xbox One games that require the Kinect sensor are incompatible with Series X and S consoles.

According to Xbox , these are the Xbox One games that are incompatible:

  • Kinect Sports Rivals
  • Dance Central Spotlight
  • Fruit Ninja Kinect 2
  • Xbox Fitness
  • Just Dance 2014
  • Rabbids Invasion: The Interactive TV Show
  • Zumba Fitness World Party
  • Kung-Fu for Kinect

  • Disney Fantasia: Music Evolved
  • Boom Ball 3 for Kinect
  • Air Guitar Warrior for Kinect

Xbox Game Pass: Games list, price, and different tiers explained

Screen Rant

Every original xbox & 360 game playable on xbox one & series x.

As the release of the Xbox Series X draws closer, here's a list of every original Xbox and Xbox 360 title playable on the Xbox One and the Series X.

There are a lot of games from previous console generations which will be backwards compatible with the  Xbox Series X   and currently are playable on the Xbox One. Microsoft is planning to release the newest version of their Xbox line of video game consoles later in 2020 during the holiday season and, in contrast to the slow reveal of information from Sony about their upcoming PlayStation 5 , players already have a good bit of information about just what exactly the new Xbox Series X is bringing to the table.

However, one things players don't yet know for sure is just when inside the Holiday 2020 release window Microsoft will make the Xbox Series X available to purchase, or how expensive it will be. Thankfully, the company is not expecting any delays with its production despite the current ongoing global situation, and players have already begun to receive video footage from next-gen Xbox game s like The Ascent . Until the Xbox Series X arrives, people looking to jump into another game right this minute have a LOT of options.

With the Xbox Series X (and the Xbox One) players don't just have new games to look forward to in the coming months, but also a massive back catalog accessible though the console's backwards compatibility functions. According to  Eurogamer , " both downloadable and disc-based Xbox 360 and original Xbox games work on Xbox One and Xbox Series X, " but only on a game-by-game basis, meaning not every single retro Xbox game will work on Microsoft's newest console. However, there is a large list of titles which will run fine on either the Xbox One or the upcoming Xbox Series X, and the full list of backwards compatible games has been included below.

With over five hundred backwards compatible games, the Xbox's library definitely has something for every kind of player imaginable. Even if some of the upcoming Xbox Series X games get delayed due to unavoidable circumstances, the amount of titles available in Microsoft's back catalog is sure to hold fans' attention for whatever length of time they have to wait. Until the next generation of  Xbox arrives, there's clearly still plenty of games to play.

Xbox: 10 Forgotten But Great Games That Are Backward Compatible

The Backwards Compatibility Program covers hundreds of games, including many forgotten gems that Xbox Series X/S and Xbox One owners should try out.

Xbox recently celebrated its 20th anniversary, and its player base was treated to a few surprises. Along with an early release of Halo Infinite 's multiplayer beta, there were also a whopping 76 original Xbox and Xbox 360 games that joined Backwards Compatability , including critically acclaimed titles like Skate 2 , Max Payne , and TimeSplitters 2 .

Unfortunately, one piece of bad news was slipped in with all the excitement: there will be no more additional Backwards Compatibility games, predominantly due to legal and technical issues . Although this is disappointing, there are more than enough excellent Xbox and Xbox 360 games for Xbox Series X/S and Xbox One owners to play, including a range of forgotten gems .

10 Binary Domain

Binary Domain is one of the 76 games that recently joined Backwards Compatibility during Xbox's 20th-anniversary celebrations. The third-person shooter turned-heads when it was released in 2012, as the game implemented a voice command feature that let players give orders to their A.I. squadmates in six different languages.

Binary Domain was released by Sega and developed by Ryu Ga Gotoku Studio, who are best known for their work on notable franchises like Yakuza , Sonic , and Super Monkey Ball .

From one Sega game to another, Vanquish is no stranger to featuring in lists about underrated or forgotten gems. This is something developers PlatinumGames likely find very bittersweet.

Vanquish impressed fans and critics upon release due to its fast-paced action and hand-to-hand combat. The game was praised for offering a 3D modernization of the classic beat 'em up and shoot 'em up arcade genres .

8 Crackdown

Crackdown is one of the many, many games over the years that was hyped up as being the "next Grand Theft Auto ." Crackdown impressed players with its January 2007 demo, which exploded in popularity and was the second most played game on Xbox at one point , with only the modern classic Gears of War placing higher at the time.

Like most games that are coin the "next GTA," Crackdown failed to live up to the sky-high expectations. However, it was still well-received and remains a joy to play today.

7 Alice: Madness Returns

When thinking of IPs that would be well-suited to a dark, gory, hack and slash video game , it's safe to say that Alice In Wonderland wouldn't spring to mind for most people.

However, Electronic Arts clearly had a different view of the novel and film. This was exemplified by their 2011 psychological horror game Alice: Madness Returns, a sequel to 2000's American McGee's Alice . Although the premise may sound like a gimmick, Alice: Madness Returns is a surprisingly solid game that finds a good balance between the hack and slash and platform genres.

6 Frontlines: Fuel of War

Frontlines: Fuel of War is a first-person shooter that came out in 2008 on PC and Xbox 360. The game's release came as war shooters were at their peak in popularity, which resulted in the FPS title being somewhat lost in the crowd.

Frontlines: Fuel of War is set in 2024, where a global energy crisis has caused a war for resources between the East and West. The game isn't the most innovative shooter in the world, but it does do a great job of encapsulating how enjoyable first-person shooters were in the late 2000s.

5 I Am Alive

Darkworks began development for I Am Alive in 2005, though it wasn't until 2012 that the game was finally finished by Ubisoft Shanghai, who took over the project in 2009. The action-adventure game throws players into a post-apocalyptic landscape and takes a more realistic approach to its gameplay than most other titles in the genre.

Whereas most post-apocalyptic games have players running and gunning like a well-oiled machine, I Am Alive forces players to consider their well-being before physical activities like climbing and jumping. Meanwhile, they also need to find ways to fend off other survivors without ammunition, such as by bluffing with an empty gun.

4 Indiana Jones And The Emperor's Tomb

There has been a wide range of Indiana Jones video games released over the decades. Although '90s graphic adventure Indiana Jones and the Fate of Atlantis is the IP's most esteemed gaming release, Indiana Jones and the Emperor's Tomb offers the best third-person action-adventure experience. The game is best remembered for taking players to a vast range of locations, including Hong Kong, Prague, Istanbul, and even The Netherworld; offering great variety to both the visuals and gameplay thanks to the different weapons and enemies.

Indiana Jones is set to make his gaming return in the near future, as Bethesda has teamed up with MachineGames to release a new title starring the archaeologist, which was teased at the start of 2021 .

Back in the mid 2005s, few people would have guessed that Kameo would be a "forgotten game" one day, as the action-adventure game had a ton of hype at the time. Rare initially planned to release the game on the Nintendo 64, a console that the studio had great success with, though the development cycle ended up taking far longer than initially predicted.

RELATED: Open World Games That Everyone Forgot About

Kameo finally got a release date many years later, when it was confirmed that it would be an Xbox 360 launch title. The game's bright and beautiful graphics were a great advert for the seventh generation console, though the launch title struggled to stay relevant when the Xbox 360's popularity sharply rose months later.

2 Enslaved: Odyssey to the West

Enslaved: Odyssey to the West was released on Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 in October 2010, before coming to PC in 2013. The game was developed by Ninja Theory, who are best known for their work on DmC: Devil May Cry and Hellblade: Senua's Sacrifice .

Like Kameo, Enslaved: Odyssey to the West turned heads with its impressive visuals, though they weren't enough to make the game a commercial success. Although there are some gameplay issues, Enslaved is well worth playing for its excellent world design and encapsulating performance from Andy Serkis, who voices the protagonist.

1 Tom Clancy's EndWar

Real-time tactics and strategy games have historically struggled to succeed on consoles, predominantly due to the genre's inherent suitability for mouse and keyboard. Tom Clancy's EndWar was no different, unfortunately, as the game struggled commercially, resulting in the cancellation of a planned sequel.

Although this paints a bleak picture of EndWar , the game is actually a ton of fun to play. Along with well-balanced strategy gameplay, EndWar also boasts an ability to be entirely played via voice commands, which provides an interesting alternative to using a gamepad.

Top frequently asked questions

How do I use Xbox One or Xbox Series X|S Backward Compatibility?

The digital titles that you own and are part of the Back Compat game catalogue will automatically show up in the “Ready to Install” section on your Xbox One or Xbox Series X|S. For disc-based games that are a part of the Back Compat game catalogue, insert the disc and the console will begin downloading the game to your hard drive. After the game has downloaded to your hard drive, users will still need to keep the game disc in the drive to play. Xbox Series S: Use with digital games only *

Does backward compatibility cost extra?

Xbox One Backward Compatibility is free and allows you to play select Xbox 360 and Original Xbox games you already own on Xbox One.

Xbox Series X|S Backward Compatibility is free and allows you to play selected Xbox 360, Original Xbox games and Xbox One games you already own on Xbox Series X|S.

Will functionality for the Original Xbox games via Xbox Backward Compatibility change from the Xbox 360 games in any way?

Functionality will be very similar. You can play the digital or disc-based game you own, taking advantage of Xbox features like Game DVR and broadcasting.

Since these are the original games, not remasters, Xbox Live services such as online multiplayer and in-game marketplaces that were available on the Original Xbox, will not be available. However, offline multiplayer scenarios such as co-op, party scenarios (multiple controller on one console), and system-link are supported if they were supported on the Original Xbox. With system-link (if game supports the feature), you can play with others across Original Xbox, Xbox 360, Xbox One, Xbox One S, Xbox One X, Xbox Series X and Xbox Series S consoles.

There are no Xbox achievements for Original Xbox games because this functionality was not available on the Original Xbox at that time of its release. Lastly, game saves will not transfer to Xbox One or Xbox Series X|S but once created on Xbox One or Xbox Series X|S, the game saves can transfer to other Xbox One or Xbox Series X|S consoles through the cloud.
