Refundable Electronic or Paper Tickets:

Fully or partially unused refundable tickets may be submitted to American Airlines for possible refund. Many tickets contain fare restrictions that limit their refundable value and require fees and/or penalties to be deducted from any refund of the original ticket.

If your paper/printed ticket passes refund eligibility and you submit the refund request, you will be required to mail in your original coupons to American Airlines at the address below before your request can be processed.

Non-Refundable Tickets:

Nonrefundable tickets generally cannot be refunded. However, exceptions may be available under the following circumstances:

Death of the passenger, immediate family member, or traveling companion.

Schedule changes implemented by American Airlines.

Certain illnesses may be considered if your ticket involves international travel, which includes travel to or from the U.S. Virgin Islands or Puerto Rico.

Upon request, taxes and fees not imposed by the airline may be refunded if the airline's obligation to remit the tax or fee depends upon use of the ticket for travel. Taxes and fees will not be refunded if the airline's obligation to remit the tax or fee arises from the collection of the tax or fee. All taxes and fees imposed by the United States government fall within this category and are not refundable.

Subject to certain restrictions and fees defined in the rules of the fare, the value of a wholly unused nonrefundable ticket may only be used toward the purchase of a new nonrefundable ticket. Travel on such reissued tickets (or subsequently reissued tickets) must commence no later than one year from the date of issue of the original ticket. The value of an AA nonrefundable fare can only be applied to the value of another AA nonrefundable fare. The value of an AA non-refundable fare cannot be applied to the purchase of another airline refundable/nonrefundable fare.

For partially used tickets, the residual value may be used toward the purchase of a new nonrefundable ticket. The residual value will be the difference between the fare paid and the fare for the transportation actually used as determined by the applicable rules less any fees or penalties defined in the rules of the fare that was purchased. All travel on such reissued tickets (or subsequently reissued tickets) must be completed no more than one year from the first date of travel on the original ticket or sooner if required by the tickets' fare rules.

In any case, the itinerary for any unused or partially used nonrefundable ticket must be canceled before the ticketed departure time of the first unused coupon, or the ticket will lose any remaining value and cannot be used for travel or reissue.

If your nonrefundable paper/printed ticket passes the above eligibility and you submit the refund request, you will be required to mail in your original coupons to American Airlines at the address below before your request can be processed.

American Airlines reserves the right to review all refund requests prior to final processing. Please be aware that the website will review all available data and make a commitment for a refund, but that commitment is always subject to additional review by a member of Passenger Refund Services prior to the refund being issued.

American Airlines is committed to process refund requests for eligible tickets within 7 business days for credit card purchases and 20 business days for cash purchases. Tickets included in the Customer Service commitment are fully unused and partially used, refundable and non-refundable (paper and electronic) tickets purchased in US currency. Tickets excluded from the commitment are fare adjustments, international tickets, and tickets purchased in international currencies. For credit card refunds, actual time for credit to appear in your account will vary depending on the credit card company and procedures.

Refund eligibility can be affected by unforeseen flight cancellations and extenuating circumstances such as natural or manmade disasters. In most cases, flights that have been cancelled due to these circumstances will be logged in our databases and adjustments will be reflected in stated refund eligibility. Changes to Application of Air Passenger Duty (APD) Tax for Children under 12 Departing the U.K.

The U.K. government recently announced the elimination of the Air Passenger Duty (APD) tax for children under the age of 12, traveling in Economy Class departing the U.K. on or after May, 1 2015, for tickets issued on or after December 5, 2014. Consequently, American Airlines is no longer collecting the APD tax on Economy Class tickets for children under the age of 12, departing the U.K. on or after May 1, 2015.

Customers who have already paid the APD Tax for children under the age of 12, booked to depart the U.K. in Economy Class on or after May 1, 2015, for tickets issued before December 5, 2014, are eligible for a refund.

Refund Processing Options

Customers who purchased tickets prior to December 5, 2014 directly through AA Reservations or via aa.com for travel exiting the U.K. on or after May 1, 2015, will be proactively refunded the APD tax.

Travel agencies may refund the APD tax on eligible 001 tickets issued prior to December 5, 2014 using one of the following three options:

1.   The issuing agency may issue a new ticket (at the exact same fare without the tax) for the child under the age of 12. Once issued, the agency may then process a refund for the original ticket provided the following required documentation is included:

Required New Ticket Documentation:

The old ticket number must be included in the endorsement box of the new ticket.

2.   The issuing agency may contact AA Sales Support or a local AA Reservation office to process the APD tax refund. Please note: If AA processes the refund, AA will reissue the ticket resulting in the travel agency losing control of the ticket for any subsequent changes.

3.   The issuing agency or the passenger may wait until travel is completed and submit a request for an APD tax refund post travel via aa.com (non-U.S. travel agencies may submit a request via BSP link).

All Refundable and Non-Refundable tickets are valid for one year from the date of issuance of the original ticket. Expired tickets have no value and cannot be refunded. Refer to  Ticket Validity .

The GTR must be returned to the government travel agency for refunds.

Refund requests associated with military orders should be submitted through  American's Refunds site

Non-Refundable Ticket Exchanges – AA 001

·           If the original non-refundable ticketed fare is of higher value then the new-ticketed fare unless stated otherwise in the fare rule, the customer is entitled to the residual amount

·           The applicable change/penalty fee may apply on non-refundable ticket exchanges and is deducted from the residual value (difference in fare amount).  See fare rules for fee information

·           The new ticketed fare is non-refundable and all rules and restrictions apply

·           U.S. agencies processing through ARC

·           A residual MCO is issued for the remaining value after applicable fees have been deducted from the original ticket value  

·           The residual MCO must be made payable to American Airlines for transportation only. Show "NON-REFUNDABLE, VALID ON AMERICAN AIRLINES ONLY" in the endorsements box. Failure to include this information on the MCO may result in a debit memo

·           Refer to   MCO Charge Order (MCO)   for complete details.

·           International IATA agencies processing through BSPLink

Refund Due to Schedule Change for a Flight Time Change

  In case of a schedule change when there is a flight time change, travel agents should refer to our  Schedule Change guidelines  for refund applicability and instructions:

Refund Due  to Irregular Operations (IROPS)/Cancelled Flights

If a customer's American or AA*/codeshare flight validated on 001 has been canceled due to an Irregular Operations (IROPS), which normally occurs on the day of departure, but can occur up to 72 hours prior to the schedule departure, and no other alternate flights are acceptable, travel professionals may refund a nonrefundable ticket(s) through normal GDS, ARC, or BSP processing per the guideline below:

Note:   If the ticketed scheduled flights were voluntarily cancelled prior to an Irregular Operations (IROPS), the ticket will not be eligible for a refund

Refund all ticket types following  Irregular Operations (IROPS)   guidelines:

·           Refund to Original Form of Payment – Allowed

·           Travel Agent to Process Ticket Refund to Original Form of Payment (FOP) using Waiver Code :  SCRFND

Note:  If the Revenue/Published/Basic Economy or Bulk/Opaque ticket has been  EXCH  by AA as an INVOL the refund request must be submitted on  American’s Refunds site

Once the agency has accepted and reissued the ticket for the Irregular Operations (IROPS) in the endorsement box on the new ticket, and the customer decides not to travel:

·           Refund is permitted when the original schedule change was greater than 90 minutes and the customer was Holding Confirmed (HK) at the time of the irregular operations

·           Refund is permitted when the flight was cancelled due to irregular operations and the customer was Holding Confirmed (HK) at the time of the irregular operations

Bereavement or Critical Illness

Tickets may be considered for refund in the event of the death of the customer, immediate family, or traveling companion. American requires proof of relationship for immediate family member.

Refund of Taxes and Fees

Select U.S. taxes may be refunded for a non-refundable ticket if the ticket is entirely unused.  Please review   Tax – Non-Refundable Tickets - Refundable U.S. Tax Codes .

In cases where a travel agency is unsure of the refund value to be refunded, a Refund Application must be submitted via BSP as we are unable to pre-audit requests via email. Please ensure the passenger is aware that the remaining ticket value is forfeited once the refund has been issued.

For nonrefundable tickets upon request, American will refund taxes and fees not imposed by the airline, collected at the time of sale of nonrefundable tickets that are not used for travel, as follows.

·    For non-refundable fare tickets, any surcharge/Q/ or service fee/YQ YR/ that has been collected will be nonrefundable.

·    Taxes or fees will not be refunded if the airline's obligation to remit the tax or fee arises by virtue of its collection of the tax or fee (as opposed to actual travel by the passenger).

·    Taxes or fees will be refunded if the airline's obligation to remit the tax or fee depends upon use of the ticket for travel.

Leniency in basic economy: TPG readers share success stories and tips

When it comes to booking basic economy, it can feel like you've kissed goodbye to your expectations for an average flight experience — and not in a good way. You board the plane last. Your backpack counts as luggage. You can't select your seat beforehand. You usually don't earn elite-qualifying miles or spend credit, and you almost certainly won't get a refund for your ticket if anything goes wrong.

Most seasoned travelers avoid basic economy fares like the plague. But every now and again, in rare situations, this fare class has its time and place. And once in a while, airlines make exceptions for troubled travelers on a case-by-case basis.

TPG reader Collin P. recently helped a friend book a replacement flight after she mistakenly switched her departure and arrival cities when buying her basic economy ticket. She didn't discover her error until three weeks after the purchase — mere days before her departure date. Collin came to her rescue with points and cash for separate last-minute booking, and even went the extra mile to submit a refund request for her original ticket on her behalf.

"It never hurts to ask nicely," Collin told TPG Lounge members . "I knew this was a long shot, but I went online and submitted the information regarding her ticket, and explained the mistake that had been made. To verify it was legit, I included the booking codes for her new flights with American Airlines to show we had made a new reservation [on the same airline] for the same dates. Within two days, my friend got an email from AA saying they were refunding her basic economy, non-refundable ticket in full! I was amazed they did that for a mistake."

Collin has it right: it never hurts to ask, and to ask nicely. In this particular case, American Airlines may have been swayed toward generosity by the fact that both tickets were purchased through the same carrier. Or perhaps Collin's messaging hit just the right sweet spot of courtesy and appeal to sway a customer service agent toward leniency. Whatever the cause, TPG readers chimed in to share their own anecdotes of both success as well as failure.

Several have found similar success with American Airlines. "I always fly American because I live outside of Philly," Paul Loux said. "I've done this a couple of times, and have called and switched the tickets with no issues or fees. They have actually canceled the tickets for me before rebooking as well."

Alice Hendricks concurs: "American Airlines, not always as bad as their reputation."

And TPG reader Brian Smith had a friend who booked a Delta basic economy flight from Nassau to Louisville, with a layover in Atlanta. "She wasn't paying attention and thought her connection was at 11 a.m., but it was actually 11 p.m.," Smith told TPG. "[Delta] let her change the connection to a much more convenient time."

Politeness goes a long way

It never hurts to dust off your manners when you reach out to an airline for help with an itinerary — and that never holds truer than for travelers holding a basic economy ticket.

"Being nice can definitely go a long way," Michael Marquez said. "American Airlines rebooked my trip to Rome last year after I mistakenly booked my connection in Heathrow, and out of Gatwick with only a two-hour layover. [The customer service agent] saved me a massive headache, and lots of money as well."

Sometimes a compassionate customer service representative will take pity on your plight. Tracie McKee mistakenly booked a Vegas flight for the wrong day. "I didn't notice this until the day before I was supposed to leave," she told TPG. "I called customer service and they, very kindly, changed it to the right day and only charged me the $30 difference in fare, and not the change fee." Something similar happened to Ann Branson: A kindly Southwest agent allowed her to change tickets without paying the higher price on the new dates.

"Each airline has an exception policy, and supervisors have reasonable discretionary powers to change things," Satyendra Singh said. "If you present your case genuinely, they do their best to help. Waiving change fees are the easy [requests to fulfill]."

Address the problem as soon as possible

Just in case you didn't know, the US Department of Transportation requires that US airlines either allow passengers to put a 24-hour hold on a quoted fare without payment, or offer a refund in the original form of payment if a cancellation is made within 24 hours of booking. Anything beyond that is at the airline's discretion to offer as a courtesy, although they're in no way obligated to do so. Every now and then, a carrier may surprise you.

TPG reader Paul Redifer found unexpected leniency from United Airlines when he booked a Budapest flight in basic economy. "I was supposed to have a Budapest arrival and Prague departure, with connections both way via Frankfurt. But I accidentally made [the booking] both in and out via Budapest," he told TPG. "I contacted United about it a week after booking, and they rebooked it; the change charge was $300 for each ticket, but they gave me a $199 eTicket credit for both tickets, so [it] only cost me $200 total. Much better than I thought it would end up costing me. The ticket agent told me that if I had called 2-3 days after booking they probably could have made the change with even less of a charge, sounds like they have some flexibility to address mistakes if you realize it right away."

Show them the logic

Giovanni Hashimoto told the TPG Lounge that "American Airlines customer service agents are usually very helpful and flexible in my experience; they're happy to waive charges for you if you give them a plausible justification."

Paul Patino agreed, sharing an anecdote from his personal experience begging United Airlines for leniency on a nonrefundable basic economy ticket. "I told customer service that I'd immediately rebook — which I did — and they accommodated me. I just treated the customer service representative pleasantly, with both respect and gratitude."

Patino's experience above was echoed by other TPG readers like Wendy Fongolia, who shared that her husband's airline gave him a refund when he rebooked a new ticket through the same airline at the current price. Jorge Balmaseda said that Delta has never given him any problems when he occasionally messes up his bookings between Fort Lauderdale and La Guardia Airport in New York. He did add the caveat, however, that "it probably doesn't hurt that I'm a Million Miler Delta Diamond."

Health issues 

For health-related cancellations, rely on trip protection insurance from a premium credit card; independent travel insurance ; or a Freebird flight protection plan , starting from $19 one-way per person. And read up on airline bereavement allowances if applicable.

While health concerns should not be exaggerated or exploited for personal gain, some airlines are really proactive about offering assistance to customers who find themselves in a tight place.

Randi Henson Koopmans told TPG that she booked a basic economy flight for her mother in law — who ended up in the hospital soon afterward. "After some paperwork submissions," Koopmans said, "the airline changed her flight for free. I was so thankful they did!"

And when Ann Bates's grandmother passed away, she accidentally booked a pair of round-trip tickets going the wrong way amidst the hassle of traveling for different religious services and the burial. "Alaska waived all the change fees," she told TPG. Sandy Sung reported that Delta similarly refunded basic economy tickets for her family due to a loss in the family.

If at first you don't succeed, try again

Quynh-Dao Phan told TPG that, while he had successfully been refunded the miles for a recently canceled award redemption trip, American Airlines erroneously credited his miles without refunding several associated fees. "I explained to them it was due to a family medical issue," he said. But although the agent over the phone was unable to help, Phan told TPG that the agent "suggested I email instead. So emailing [customer service] may be another option if calling doesn't work."

Pummi Dulku's experience proves that, in cases of ambiguity, it's worth trying for recourse another way. "We had a emergency with our two year old who had an ear infection," Dulku told TPG. Their pediatrician doctor advised the family not to fly, so the family called American Airlines requesting assistance for the one family ticket that had been booked in basic economy. The reservations hotline told Dulki that "nothing could be done as far as keeping the credit. So I contacted customer relations via email and explained the situation — and a few days laterk I got a very nice letter back. The agent was very nice and empathetic, and also gave us a credit to use on a later flight."

When all else fails...

Of course, every customer service success story has its counterpart. Yuri Herrera told TPG that a friend booked roundtrip American Airlines flights through the Chase Ultimate Rewards portal, and accidentally picked the wrong outgoing date. "More than $600 later, he corrected the mistake — and he had to discuss [the situation] with Chase, not American Airlines."

At the end of the day, the stories above are encouraging to hear: If you make a mistake in good faith, it's always worth the effort of nicely asking the airline to consider the circumstances surrounding your booking. Be flexible on potential outcomes — it may be easier for customer service to offer you a voucher toward future travel, for instance, rather than offering a refund to which you're not entitled in the first place. At the end of the day, you're asking for a goodwill gesture from the airline, which isn't obligated to dip into its bottom line to rectify your purchase error.

How to refund a nonrefundable airline ticket

B ooking flights for a big vacation months in advance can be tricky. It can leave plenty of opportunity for something unexpected to pop up, putting you in a situation where you'd like to change or even cancel your reservation .

Unexpected events can include an illness, a work conflict or a family emergency.

You might also find better airfare and wish you could cancel and rebook at a lower price (hint: often, you can).

Though most airlines don't have the ultraflexible policies they temporarily offered at the height of the COVID-19 pandemic, there are a lot more ways to change a ticket penalty-free than there were a few years ago.

Certainly, purchasing a fully refundable ticket is one way to ensure you can get your money back if something goes wrong. However, it may cost more and isn't always an option.

In some cases, though, you still have options even if you purchased a ticket that's technically nonrefundable.

Take advantage of fewer change fees

One positive change that emerged from the pandemic was that some airlines no longer charge change fees for main cabin tickets and above.

While Southwest Airlines has long been known for not charging change fees, other carriers like American Airlines, Delta Air Lines and United Airlines have also abandoned change fees in recent years, at least for most ticket classes.

This means if you run into an unexpected hurdle and your original itinerary doesn't work for you, you should be able to rebook without paying a fee. However, if your new ticket costs more, you'll typically have to pay the difference between your old ticket and your new one.

Also, this flexibility isn't typically extended to travelers flying on a basic economy ticket or with a budget airline, so check the specific terms of your fare (note that newcomer Breeze Airways , which brands itself as a "nice low-cost carrier," doesn't charge change or cancellation fees).

Of course, changing your ticket is one thing. What if you simply can't travel at all?

Qualify for a refund under federal policy

This one is pretty straightforward but incredibly important. If your flight is canceled, you are entitled to a full refund if you ultimately decide not to travel.

For domestic flights and international flights departing or arriving in the U.S., you're covered by the rules of the U.S. Department of Transportation. The DOT's website indicates that if your flight is canceled — no matter the reason — you are entitled to a full refund back to your original form of payment for the unused portion of your itinerary.

This applies to flights that are significantly delayed or have a significant schedule change, although DOT policy doesn't specify what constitutes such a disruption.

Cancel and take a flight credit

Consistent with many airlines' policies to eliminate change fees, a lot of carriers will now let you cancel even "nonrefundable" tickets for flight credit.

You won't get your cash back, but you'll receive credit for what you paid, which you can use to rebook your canceled trip or book a future trip.

Again, this usually isn't the case for basic economy tickets or flights on ultra-low-cost carriers , but it can be a useful option if you find a lower price on airfare and want to rebook yourself or have unexpected circumstances arise.

For example, American's policy will allow you to use trip credit in the future as long as your new trip begins no later than one year from the ticket's original issue date and as long as you canceled the original trip before the flight departed.

Delta will also let travelers apply the value for nonrefundable tickets via e-credit for full-fare economy (main cabin) and above. In fact, Delta will even partially refund basic economy tickets minus a cancellation charge.

United will issue future flight credits "if you cancel your trip or change your flight to a less expensive one."

Southwest gives flight credit, at a minimum, for canceled trips of any fare class as long as you cancel at least 10 minutes prior to departure.

Did you book using points or miles?

On many airlines, award tickets booked with frequent flyer miles are fully refundable, and the associated taxes and fees often are, too.

Check the terms of your airline's loyalty program and your specific ticket to make sure you won't be charged a fee to redeposit the miles. If you booked using points or miles, you should be able to get them credited back into your frequent flyer account.

Some airlines may charge a fee to redeposit the points, but that's less common today, too. Similar to airlines that give you flight credit for canceled reservations, this is one option you can use to take advantage of a better deal if the award price drops after you book .

Tell the agent what's going on

Sometimes the truth can go further than you think. Many airlines are understanding and want to try to help you out if they can.

A few years ago, a friend of mine planned a vacation to Cancun, but a medical emergency forced the family to put the trip on hold. JetBlue was extremely understanding of the situation and issued all 16 passengers travel vouchers for the full amount paid, and no fees were charged. Although the family was fully prepared to send in a doctor's note, JetBlue did not even ask for one.

At the time, JetBlue would have normally charged $75 per person to change the tickets, which means the family saved $1,200.

Fortunately, today, JetBlue does not charge a change fee for full-fare economy tickets and above, though you will pay at least $100 to change a Blue Basic ticket.

Check to see if you booked with a credit card that has travel insurance

There are a number of travel credit cards that include travel insurance protections, which can help offset unexpected costs incurred when you have to cancel a trip.

Cards like The Platinum Card® from American Express , the Chase Sapphire Reserve Card and others have trip protections that, in some cases, might allow you to make a claim and get reimbursed for expenses when you have to cancel — provided that it's for a covered reason.

Keep in mind these types of protections can also cover unreimbursed expenses if, say, you have to spend an unexpected night in a hotel (with ground transportation to and from the hotel) because of an overnight flight delay. Generally, the one huge caveat is that you must have booked all elements of the trip with that card.

If you paid with a card that has trip protection and qualifies for reimbursement on your card's insurance plan, this is where the card can really pay for itself.

Don't forget about third-party travel insurance

If you think there's a reason you might end up needing to cancel your trip and either don't have a credit card with trip protections or want even more coverage, you can always consider purchasing a travel insurance plan .

Comprehensive plans will generally reimburse you when you need to cancel a trip for a covered reason. You'll also have the option to add protections like supplemental medical coverage during your trip.

The sooner you purchase the plan after making your first trip payment, the better. Many plans won't cover health conditions or cancellation for named storms or other circumstances that exist before the plan is purchased. So, generally speaking, the sooner you purchase the plan, the more things it'll cover.

You can also purchase cancel-for-any-reason insurance plans, but they can be pretty expensive.

That being said, anything you pay in a premium will eat into the cost savings you get from a refund. So, this is generally a better bet for your long-haul business-class ticket to Europe or Asia and less so for your coach ticket to Florida.

Bottom line

There may be cases where a nonrefundable ticket truly is nonrefundable.

However, with more flexible airline policies, federal refund policies and travel insurance plans or cards with insurance, don't automatically assume you're out of luck if you need to cancel a trip just because you booked a nonrefundable ticket.

You have up to 24 hours from the time you first buy your ticket for a refund if you booked at least 2 days prior to departure. The 24-hour refund policy applies to all ticket types, but you have to cancel the trip to get a refund.* Reservations booked as part of group block do not qualify for the 24 hour refund.

If you bought your American Airlines ticket directly from us, you can request a refund online. If you're an AAdvantage ® member and canceled your flight on or after January 17, 2024, you can receive a travel credit, minus a Basic Economy cancellation fee. To qualify, your AAdvantage ® number must be in your reservation and your trip must be:

  • On American Airlines marketed and operated flights

If you cancel a trip that has already begun, the ticket loses any remaining value and cannot be used for future travel.

Ticketing and other fees

What is flight insurance?

Flight insurance covers flight expenses only — lodging, rental cars, etc. are not covered.

You can purchase standalone flight insurance from a third party or from the airline itself.

Your qualifying expenses are only reimbursed if a covered reason affects your flight.

You might already have sufficient flight insurance through your credit card.

Whether you’re booking a flight with cash or miles, flight insurance can help you get your money or miles back if your trip is unexpectedly canceled or delayed. Here’s what you need to know to decide if flight insurance is worth it for your trip.

Travel insurance terminology can get confusing. To keep things simple, when we refer to flight insurance, we mean insurance that will protect your nonrefundable flight that was paid for in cash or with miles.

Generally, flight insurance is offered when you:

Purchase a comprehensive travel insurance policy through a travel insurance provider (i.e. TravelSafe , Berkshire Hathaway , etc.)

When you use a premium travel card (that offers complimentary travel insurance) to book your flight.

Are buying a flight and get an option to purchase the airline’s trip insurance during the checkout process.

Since flight insurance specifically covers your flight, it can be a good option if you need to insure only a flight but no other aspects of your trip. For example, you buy a nonrefundable flight to visit family — you'll be staying with them, and you don’t need to book a hotel, car rental or excursions. Flight insurance might be sufficient for this type of trip, and buying a comprehensive travel insurance plan might be overkill.

Whether you’re getting flight insurance through a comprehensive travel insurance plan, your premium credit card or as an add-on from the airline, there are a few common types of coverage that may be included. Naturally, coverage amounts and limits will vary by policy and/or credit card.

Here’s an example of what coverage is included on a flight insurance plan offered by United Airlines when purchasing a flight.

The flight insurance add-on is provided by Travel Guard and costs $14 to insure a $213 flight. The plan includes: a flight refund (i.e., trip cancellation insurance) if you cannot travel for a covered reason, lost baggage coverage, as well as coverage for flight cancellations and missed connections.

There's a notice posted for residents of Washington and New York, so if you live in one of those states, the coverage may differ.

Trip cancellation insurance

Trip cancellation insurance will reimburse you for prepaid, nonrefundable expenses if your flight is canceled for a covered reason. In the event you use your premium travel card from American Express or Chase to book your trip with points or miles, the trip cancellation insurance that comes with these cards will reimburse you in cash for the value of the points you used.

Notably, trips booked with an American Express card are only covered when booked as roundtrips. If you have a travel card with American Express, you’ll want to check the benefits guide for your card because that's where this caveat is located, and it's easy to overlook.

If you purchase a comprehensive travel insurance policy or an airline add-on policy, you typically will be reimbursed for the full cost of your flight, up to the policy maximums.

Trip delay insurance

This coverage kicks in if you’re delayed during a trip and you incur expenses as a result. Each policy details the reimbursement amount that is allowed, along with how long the delay must be in order for the trip to qualify.

For example, say you’re going on vacation and you have a connecting flight with a layover. An approaching snowstorm in the connecting city delays your flight, and after hours of waiting in the airport, you find out your upcoming flight is delayed until the next morning . Now you need a hotel room, toiletries, dinner and breakfast the next morning.

If you have trip delay coverage, you will be reimbursed for all of these expenses, as long as the delay exceeds a certain number of hours and you remain within the allowed daily monetary limit. For the United policy shown above, you will be covered up to $500 if you miss your connecting flight due to inclement weather or a delay of your original flight.

According to Squaremouth, a travel insurance comparison site, not all travel insurance policies offer coverage for missed connections, so if you’re booking a flight that has connections, you’ll want to pay attention to this benefit.

Lost-luggage insurance

If you have lost-luggage insurance, you'll be eligible for reimbursement for your luggage contents if your luggage is lost, damaged or stolen during a trip. In the event of damage, the reimbursement would be for the cost to repair or replace, whichever is lower.

Lost-luggage coverage will likely include an overall limit as well as a per-item limit, and a separate limit for expensive items. We examined a flight insurance add-on offered by American Airlines and found that the baggage loss coverage had a limit of $300. If your luggage or its contents cost more than $300, that limit may not be sufficient for you.

Although flight insurance offers many protections, it's important to be aware of what may not be covered. Some examples of things that aren’t covered include:

Change of mind: If you cancel a flight because you change your mind about going, that won't be covered. The cancellation must be for a covered reason (i.e., too sick to travel and you have a doctor's note, job loss, inclement weather, etc.).

Expensive luggage: As detailed above with the American Airlines policy, the lost-luggage coverage is capped at $300. If you’re traveling with high-end luggage or your the contents of your luggage exceed that amount, anything above $300 won't be insured if the luggage is lost or damaged.  

Medical evacuation: This type of coverage generally kicks in when you have a medical emergency during your trip and you need to be transported to the nearest medical facility. Trip protections may include trip cancellation, trip interruption and trip delay, as well as coverage for lost bags.

If you use airline miles to book an award ticket, the flight insurance offered during the checkout process typically covers a redeposit of your miles back to your frequent flyer account if the trip is canceled.

Comprehensive trip insurance policies and credit card travel insurance will reimburse you for the taxes and fees paid on award tickets but may not cover the miles.

Make sure to check your policy if booking with points; some comprehensive and credit card plans will reimburse you for "redeposit fees" that the airline will charge you to get your miles back (if you didn’t purchase their add-on protection). That redeposit fee reimbursement allows you to get your miles back.

If you’re interested in insuring only your flight, you have many options to choose from.

For tickets purchased with cash, comprehensive insurance plans, premium travel credit cards and airline trip insurance will cover your nonrefundable flight costs. Award flights that are booked with miles could benefit from any of the three options if redeposit fees are part of the coverage.

If you want to be able to cancel your flight for any reason whatsoever, CFAR will protect most of your nonrefundable trip deposit, but it is also more expensive and only available as an add-on to a comprehensive travel insurance plan.
