Maximize enjoyment and minimize stress

We just returned from our third amazing travel adventure expertly organized by Mikael and the attentive team at Art In Voyage. Our 10-day journey through Japan exceeded all expectations. From our friendly, knowledgeable guide to the diverse cities, sites, accommodations, meals, and activities, every aspect of the trip was enriching and enjoyable. We couldn't have asked for a more fulfilling experience. If you value your vacation time and want to make the most of it, Art In Voyage is the ideal choice. Mikael and his team go above and beyond to ensure that every detail is perfect. As former business owners, we truly appreciate how well Mikael manages his team and adds personal touches to make each trip special. During our recent trip, we particularly enjoyed the sushi making and calligraphy classes they organized for us, along with many other enjoyable experiences. If you're looking to minimize travel stress and maximize your enjoyment, we highly recommend Art In Voyage.

Warning: Art Voyage's Unethical Practices

Dear Colleagues, I regret to inform you of my disappointing experience with Art In Voyage. Despite initial promises of partnership, they failed to fulfill financial obligations after services were rendered. This lack of accountability is concerning. I strongly advise caution when considering any engagements with Art Voyage. Their failure to honor agreements raises serious doubts about their reliability. Please exercise diligence in business relationships to uphold industry integrity. Best regards,

Good day concerned Citizen, It's easy to hide behind a fake profile, but one might think that if your statement was accurate, why would you believe a review on this platform would fix whatever alleged issue you bring up? One would also think there would be many others likes yours posted. You give a fake name, no company name, no details, and expect us to believe this is a legitimate complaint. One does not stay in business for close to 10 years, and receive so many incredible reviews over the same not fullfilling its financial obligations. So have your fake review! We know what we are worth, and so do our repeat guests, who clearly enjoy the very reliability you are attacking today! And if you are real, and really have an issue with an unpaid bill, then you should have our contact information. have a lovely day further! Art In Voyage management

Exceptionally Designed Trip and Travel Assistance

The team at Art in Voyage designed the trip-of-a-lifetime for my husband and I to explore Africa. Their insights into the best locations and experiences was truly invaluable as we tried to cover a great deal of ground throughout South Africa, Namibia, and Botswana. Their advice was perfect for our needs and preferences. In addition, we ran into some travel issues and required US Embassy assistance and changing of travel plans midway through our travels. The team at AIV helped navigate all of the complexity of getting a new passport, changing flights, obtaining transportation. At every step, they helped make sure we were able to resolve our issue. Without their hands-on help our trip would have been substantially disrupted. Instead, they made sure that we could make alterations to our travels to avoid any significant interruptions. It was truly invaluable and now we plan to ALWAY use Art in Voyage to manage our travels.

Yet another great trip with AIV!

Yet another great trip with AIV! This was our second trip in 2 years with AIV (March '23 to Portugal) and this April '24 to Iceland. Once again, AIV made our vacation a fantastic one with a great list of activities for our family group. My wife and I, along with her parents that are 79 and 82, had an amazing week. We did everything from seeing the humpback whales & Icelandic horses to glacier ice cave exploring & gushing geysers. We even had my in-laws on an ATV excursion, a first for them that they loved! One important thing to highlight was the white-out snow conditions that closed the Iceland circle route the day that we arrived. This was no problem for our fantastic guide as she was able to re-arrange our schedule including excursions, hotels, and food without a second thought or worry on our part. In fact, I think our trip was even better for it as we were able to explore further into the southern coast area and find some unique spots that were not on our original list of to-do's. Thank you to all at AIV again...we're already planning for next year, hopefully a Safari is in our future per my mother-in-law's request to celebrate her 80th birthday!

Jambo Africa dear friends, Huge thanks for your lovely review, and for your continued loyalty and friendship to the Art In Voyage vision. Until next time, much love and appreciation from the team Mikael

Unique, yet effortless

Traveling with the Art In Voyage team makes everything effortless and amazing. I was a bit concerned about the long flight to S. Africa, but I’m so happy I decided to go. It was awe inspiring and life-changing. It actually felt like we had three mini trips… Cape Town, the winelands, and then a safari. Also, I ended out shattering my ankle on Safari… Totally my fault. The Art In Voyage team worked endlessly to ensure my flight home was as comfortable and short as possible. I don’t know how it would’ve gotten home without them. This is my fifth trip with them. As soon as my ankle heals, I will be off on my next adventure Art in Voyage. They are truly unique and special travel company.

Dear friend, dear Audra, What can we say? Oh yes, we LOVE LOVE Having you on these journeys we us, and can't thank you enough for your continued friendship and loyalty to a very unique vision of what travel should be. We are all keeping you in our thoughts for a quick recovery and a stronger ankle so we can take you biking through Namibia (kidding..we have wheelchairs). Joking aside, please take good care of yourself. Much love from us all

Unique Experiences

Our family of 4 just returned from a fantastic trip to Tokyo and Kyoto. The AIV team took their cues from my college graduate daughter's tik-tok list of activities and turned it into a memorable trip blending the old and new sites, shopping, food and culture of Japan. they even found a few surprises for us to enjoy. While there were a few hiccups along the way AIV was very responsive and quick to resolve them. Will travel with them again.

Unsurpassed quality of guides, accommodation, details

Taste of South Africa/Feb 2024 was my first trip with Art in Voyage. I'm in the luxury leisure travel business so know a quality product when I experience it and THIS is THAT in spades! The destination speaks for itself, but the secret sauce are the guides that Mikael brings to the experience - Chef Kevin Fonzo & the Wine Fairy Katie Barratt elevate the experience with their engaging personalities and depth of knowledge which they are so passionate about sharing. Our guide at Kruger National Park, Hali, must be a one of South Africa's national treasures. What an amazing 3 days exploring the park and seeing the Big 5 + with his experienced tracking and huge contagious smile. A highlight of this trip was the Ithemba Youth Choir performing for us at our Cape Town seaside villa on our final night there. Such a special experience. Art in Voyage staff are exemplary in their attention to every detail. Highly recommend for a unique small group experience of superb quality.

Dear Stacy Thank you so very much for not only joining us on our incredible South African adventure, but for this lovely review of what has been, it seems, a memorable experience to you both. We hope to see you soon at a different destination and on one of our many journeys, be it curated or exclusive. Jambo Africa and much love from the whole team.

Family Trip to Australia & Bali

Family Trip to Australia & Bali 16 days, 6 people, 5 flights, rental cars, transportation, 5 different hotel/resorts, tour guide, restaurant recommendations, spear fishing, electric bike tours, coffee tasting, island hopping, and everything was PERFECT! I worked with Mikael, Nadine, & Nikole and our entire trip ran so smoothly because of Art In Voyage took the necessary time on the front end to create an experience our entire family could enjoy. Making memories through travel and a big Thank You to AIV and their staff.

This was our first trip with Art in Voyage, and hopefully it won’t be the last! Our guides, Mikael and Katie, were wonderful. The accommodations, food, wine, and experiences were amazing. And no detail was too small or overlooked. They thought of everything! We had 6 guests and 2 guides, so we were taken care of with exceptional care. And compassion when my husband was under the weather for a few days. This was a spectacular experience and I only wish we had found Art in Voyage sooner!

Wonderful trip to Argentina

My wife and I just completed a wonderful trip to Buenos Aires and the Mendoza wine region. Art In Voyage curated a trip specifically for us taking into account all our concerns and desires. They also "accompanied" us throughout the tour via a customized WhatsApp channel just for our trip. This was very comforting. The lodging selected was first-rate and unique. We would never have found these cool spots!!! The tours that were coordinated were wonderful, unique, and customized to what we wanted to see. Our food tour, for example, was very non-touristy and focused on local spots (which was our desire). Our drivers were super professional and always looking out for us. Our wine tours in Mendoza were more than we could have expected. They focused on specialized wineries and tasting experiences we could never have found on our own. Each wine tour concluded with a unique dining experience (you haven't lived until you had a meal and imbibed local wine while overlooking the vineyards and The Andes). We attended a wine tasting in Buenos Aires hosted by the city's top wine expert. When local sommeliers in attendance heard about our lineup of wineries visits, they were very impressed. During our return to the USA, we experienced several delays and flight cancellations which were weather-related, a trying situation at best. Using our personalized WhatsApp channel, we learned of the delays before the airlines let us know and Art in Voyage was already working on alternative arrangements to make certain that all was handled, and we returned with as little delay and hassles as possible.

Curated in Camden

We just returned from the most AMAZING four days in Camden Maine with AIV and Kevin! Words will never describe what we experienced from arrival to departure. Everything was so organized and executed flawlessly. From the B&B, to the F&B, we were all blown away. Our Cooking Class with Chef Melissa Kelly was fun and fabulous! If you are every in the area, so not miss dining at PRIMO. She runs one of the most impressive operations, she does Farm to Table like nobody else! The oyster tasting, cheese tasting and wine tasting were all pure prefection. The highlight was spending four days with Kevin and experiencing Camden with him! He's fun, thoughtful, informative, energetic and resourceful! (and handsome two!) We all loved Nadine and Mikael from afar, they kept us all informed pre and post travel! This will definitely not be our last AIV trip. They certianly do it RIGHT! THANK YOU!

Our third, perfect adventure with AinV.

Our third curated foodie vacation with Art in Voyage and will continue to give our highest marks and recommendations. Two in Europe and one in the 'States have all be exceptual. Their attention to detail is top notch and we love to let them take care of everything so we can enjoy our (too rare!) leisure time.

Our trip to Maine with Art in Voyage…

Our trip to Maine with Art in Voyage was delightful! Our guide Kevin took us to a variety of places from a lighthouse to an excellent farm to table restaurant to a blueberry farm at which gin is made. We ate fresh oysters and lobster, made ravioli, and drank fine wines. Our accommodations were fabulous! In summary, AIV ensures that guests have a thoroughly enjoyable experience.

My wife and I recently took a wonderful…

My wife and I recently took a wonderful journey through the Burgundy & Beaujolais wine region of France. Mikael and Katie “The Wine Fairy” were our hosts, and we couldn’t have been in better hands. Our accommodations were first class, the food was spectacular and, of course, the wine was delicious. We learned so much from Katie about French wine making and she was so knowledgeable and entertaining throughout the journey. The small tour group ( maximum 10 ) made this an intimate experience with many funny moments and lasting memories. Thanks to everyone at Art in Voyage for putting together a fun and informative tour. Highly recommend this tour company for your next adventure. Gary and Laura

An exquisite unique experience

This is our 5th Art In Voyage journey and we have two more planned in 2024 and 2025. This journey was exquisite as always. Every day was a joy. Mikael and Katie were both accommodating to all our particular needs. Our two accommodations; a 13th century castle and a 12th Century Abbaye were both comfortable and different experiences. Our massage after our arrival was a welcoming extra. Katie Barratt AKA as Katie the Wine Fairy is not only wine knowledgeable but a warm, funny and engaging personality. Mikael is the consummate host on these journeys. He visited many pharmacies to purchase medications for me to address the cold I seemed to have contracted while traveling. I really can't say enough good things about this group.

Adriatic Adventure

We (my wife, daughter and son-in-law) completed our first AIV experience, Marvels of the Adriatic, two weeks ago. It was most memorable. We have made several family international trips together, and this one ranks among the best. Mikael designed an itinerary along the Adriatic coast (including Albania, Montenegro, and Croatia) that did not disappoint and culminated in an amazing crescendo in Istria - a very special place at the north end of Croatia. The hotel selections were excellent. The local guides were knowledgeable and enhanced our experience exponentially. The local people could not have been more welcoming. The natural beauty of the region was overwhelming. The AIV team (Nadine and Nicole) were always available providing us daily updates and helping us in our times of need. We will contact AIV when we plan our future travel and highly recommend that you do too!

We’ve just returned home from an amazing trip to Umbria, Italy!! We had a fantastic time, the villa and its grounds were breathtaking!! Mikael & Kevin went above and beyond to make sure we had a memorable vacation… and they succeeded!! Already booked our next trip with Art In Voyage!!

New bar has been set. Thanks so much!

Superb trip. Really loved the curated experience aspect and not having to worry about the itinerary. It was just enough to do and see with a nice variety, yet not too overwhelming or exhausting. Chef Fonzo cooking at the villa all but one night was a really superb change from going out to eat nightly on vacations. Everything was handled really well. Only complaint was the driver didn't meet us at the airport baggage with a name/sign and our first impression was "What do we do now there's nobody here?". It worked out after some international phone calls and waiting... and we proceeded to have a beautiful trip.

Amazing customized journey to Umbria

Thank you so much for our amazing trip to Umbria! Your team truly catered to our personal preferences on every level; with both of us being foodies, it made a difference! Our favorites were the fantastic dinners by Chef Jennifer and her AIV touches😊 Her culinary creations were arts themselves! The truffle hunt with Bruno was a wonderful experience as well as the visits to the various local towns! Looking through the pictures they were each different and very charming! Memories for a lifetime for sure!

Philanthropy accessible to all.

Art Voyage was born out of a shared passion for traveling the world. But, the pandemic clipped our wings and, by the time we were able to resume our travels almost normally, the way we traveled had changed forever. People no longer travel to the same old destinations, and social purpose has become one of the determining factors when choosing a destination.

People are now more interested in choosing a destination in need of tourism, rather than all-inclusive luxury travel. From that, philanthropy tourism was born.

Philantourism is a new trend emerging in the wake of the pandemic, where people choose unknown, small and local destinations. We’ve started to prioritize our privacy, the personalization of our experiences and the ability to help when traveling, making our trips unique and renewing adventures.

Art Voyage offers small tour sizes that offer maximum privacy and completely customizable experiences that align with your passions and interests. Our philanthropy tours support underserved women-owned businesses through guided cultural tours, and culinary and art experiences.

This Austrian Town Known for Its Hiking and Skiing Is Making Waves in the Art Scene

Amid the Hohe Tauern mountains, this growing creative hub offers design-forward hotels, Art Nouveau architecture, and intimate art fairs.

art voyage travel

As I drove in to Bad Gastein, I could see the place laid out in front of me like a diorama. Set in Austria’s Hohe Tauern mountains, it spread across a valley and climbed up two vertiginous hillsides. At the top were tall Belle Époque buildings, with Art Nouveau and older houses sitting below them, and the roaring Bad Gastein Waterfall at the heart of it all. It all resembled the set of a Wes Anderson film — the former Grand Hôtel de l’Europe , in the center of town, is a dead ringer for the Grand Budapest Hotel.

A few years ago, I started to hear about Bad Gastein from art-world friends in Berlin, where I live. They told me this small, quirky town — already an established skiing and hiking destination — had become a haven for creatives from around Europe and was trying to foster an independent artistic scene on par with what was happening in Joshua Tree, California, or Marfa, Texas. Last July, I finally set out to see it for myself.

Bad Gastein, a 90-minute drive from Salzburg and easily reached by train from Berlin or Munich, has a layered history. Beginning with the Celts in the fourth century B.C., it was a gold-mining area. Then, starting in the 16th and carrying into the first half of the 20th century, it was mostly known for the therapeutic qualities of its thermal springs. The town evolved into a retreat where intellectuals like Sigmund Freud summered and artists like Gustav Klimt went to sketch. Royals, including Sisi, Empress Elisabeth of Austria, came to its sanatoriums to take the waters. Ski resorts opened in the 1900s, making Bad Gastein an alpine destination — the World Ski Championship was held there in 1958, and today, the town has four ski areas with impressively steep terrain.

Courtesy of Sommer.Frische.Kunst

In the mid 1970s, however, Bad Gastein’s glory started to fade, and many downtown buildings fell into decay. By the late 1990s, when the architect Ike Ikrath and his wife, Evelyn — whose family ran Haus Hirt Hotel & Spa , a 1920s-era hotel that still operates today — moved to town, it had a haunted, deserted quality. “The town was going bankrupt, and it was a disaster,” Evelyn Ikrath told me.

But sometimes, if the right seeds are planted, beautiful things can grow. Which is exactly what has happened in Bad Gastein over the past two decades: artists from around Europe have created site-specific art projects, injecting new life into the town. In a time when many European ski resorts are grappling with climate change, Bad Gastein has redefined itself as a winter sports destination where art is front and center.

After dropping my bags at the Cōmodo — a 1960s sanatorium that, in early 2023, was reborn as a 70-room hotel with a Midcentury Modern aesthetic — I headed over to Kraftwerk, an abandoned power plant that has been transformed into a restaurant, temporary studios, and an exhibition space. I was there to meet the Hamburg curator Andrea von Goetz for the opening of art:badgastein , a weeklong art fair she had launched the year before. I found her in the middle of a colorfully dressed crowd of collectors, artists, and gallerists, holding court.

From left: Courtesy of Design Hotels; Getty Images

“When I came with my family to Bad Gastein for the first time in the early 2000s, it was a sort of abandoned, strange place,” von Goetz said, “but for me it looked like an opportunity, like a gigantic piece of white paper.” Back then, she partnered with Doris Höhenwarter, who was working for the tourism board at the time; the Ikraths, who, over the years, remade Haus Hirt into the stylish 33-key property it is today; and Olaf Krohne, who runs the sleek hotel Regina . In 2011, von Goetz and the group also started sommer.frische.kunst (“”), an artist-residency program at Kraftwerk.

They also curated an “Art Walking Tour” with 15 site-specific artworks planted throughout town and in the surrounding valleys and forests. One dramatic red timber sculpture, Harfen (Harps), by the Berlin-based artist Olaf Holzapfel, was erected in nearby Hohe Tauern National Park. The walk is meant as “a sort of treasure hunt or pilgrimage,” Evelyn Ikrath told me. “You could spend several days hiking to find them.”

The walking tour and the fair made the art scene feel playful and interactive. Gisela Clement, who owns a women-artist-focused gallery in Bonn, Germany, told me something similar. “All the other big art fairs have gotten so commercial,” she said. “This feels intimate and authentic.”

Florian Kolmer/Courtesy of Sommer Frische Kunst

The next day, I walked along the Kaiser Wilhelm Promenade, a forested path with a charming coffee shop, Café Schuh , and spectacular views of the valley below. Back in town, I popped in to galleries showcasing up-and-coming artists. I was particularly taken with an installation by Pegasus Product, a Berlin-based collective of artists Dargelos Kersten, Anton Peitersen, and Gernot Seeliger. They had created an “oracle” experience that played on the modern-day conception of wellness and spirituality: participants paid to throw rubber strands onto a glass surface, which was X-rayed, and then sat in a chair and put their hand into an opening. A printed image emerged, which was rolled up into a Bic Cristal pen and made into a necklace.

Later that evening, at a dinner of about 200 people celebrating sommer.frische.kunst at the mountain lodge Bellevue Alm , von Goetz was sitting at the head of a table, a glass of sparkling wine in her hand. She took in the joyful crowd and remarked that she felt pleased to arrive at this celebratory moment, but also cautious. She didn’t want Bad Gastein to go the way of other art hubs, appropriated by real estate developers and commercialized, with the artists squeezed out. If done right, the community could “build a mountain city ready for the future,” she said. And at that moment, surrounded by optimistic creators and collectors, many of them wearing their Pegasus Product pendants, I believed her.
