Athirapally waterfalls is one of the biggest waterfalls in India standing at a height of 82 feet. This waterfall is a popular tourist destination in Kerala. There are various tourist places near Athirapally Falls which can be covered on your Athirapally Trip. It is located in Pariyaram, Kerala. The nearest town is Chalakudy which is at a distance of 31km from Athirapally falls. The falls is located in the entrance of sholayar ranges of western ghats. 1. vazhachal waterfalls.

The Vazhachal waterfalls originate from the Chalakudy river and is just 5 km from Athirapally falls. The milky white falls are a beautiful sight at an elevation of 390 feet. The drive from Athirapally to Vazhachal falls is mostly through forest area making it even more memorable. To travel from Athirapally to Valparai you must take a permit from the Kerala forest check post near this falls. The Vazhachal forest checkpost opens at 6.00 A.M. This is one of the popular places near Athirapally falls.

You can use the same ticket purchased from Athirapally falls to enter the Vazhachal Falls.

2. Thumboormuzhi Dam and Hanging bridge

The Tumboormuzhi dam & Hanging bridge is situated on the way towards Athirapally falls from Chalakudy . It is located at a distance of 16 km from Chalakudy and 14 km from Athirapally Falls. It is maintained as a beautiful garden with a check dam and a butterfly garden.

The check dam is mainly used for irrigation purpose in Chalakudy area.  You can visit the hanging bridge which is the main attraction at Thumboormuzhi. If you cross this hanging bridge you will reach Ernakulam district.

3. Sholayar Penstock Pipe View Point (Poringalkuthu Hydroelectric power station)

The Penstock Pipes are the part of the Sholayar Hydroelectric project situated at Poringalkuthu power station. This viewpoint is located 25 km away from Athirapally falls, on Athirapally – Valparai forest road. This spot requires a drive through the forest area and hence a permit from the Forest check post at Vazhachal falls is needed. 4. Charpa Waterfalls

The Charpa falls is located 3.4 kms from the Athirapally waterfalls and is located in between Athirapally and Vazhachal Waterfalls. During monsoon season, the falls are seen at its best and often pouring on to the roads. You don’t need any ticket to visit this waterfall. As the waterfall is near to the road people tend to get near the falls, which can be very dangerous.

Sholayar dam is located on the Athirapally to Valparai route. This is one of the major dams in Tamil Nadu. Sholayar dam is a part of Hydro electric project by Tamil Nadu state. The dam is located at a distance of 55 km from Athirapally falls on Athirapally – Valparai Route. The Chimmini wildlife sanctuary & dam is located at a distance of 47 kms from Athirapally falls, in Echippara, Chalakudy Taluk. It was built in the year 1996 on the Chimmini river. Surrounded by beautiful hills the dam and the wild life sanctuary are popular tourist spots near Athirapally falls. Boating in the reservoir and trekking through the sanctuary are the top things to do in Chimmini. It is a popular tourist spot near the Athirapally waterfalls along with the Peechi – Vazhani wildlife sanctuary. Established in 1958 the sanctuary is home to some exotic flora and fauna.

There are boating services available at the Peechi dam along with the entry to the Peechi wildlife sanctuary. The entry fee to the dam is Rs. 10 and boating fee is Rs. 150 per head.

Ezhattumugham is located at 14.7 kms from Athirapally waterfalls in the Ernakulam District. It is known as Ezhattumugham Prakriti Gramam, for its serene picturesque landscapes. This beautiful village can be easily accessed from the Thumboormuzhi – Ezhattumugham Hanging bridge located inside Thumboormuzhi gardens. You can also drive to Ezhattumugham through road. Athirappilly Falls: The Complete Guide

Athirappilly Falls is notably the largest waterfall in Kerala , in South India. Yet, it's commonly overlooked by foreign tourists who prefer to visit more familiar destinations such as the Kerala backwaters , Kochi , Varkala , Munnar , and Periyar National Park . The evocative, scenic beauty of the place hasn't escaped the attention of filmmakers and the Kerala tourism board though. Staying in a tree house facing the waterfall makes the experience of visiting it particularly special. This guide to Athirappilly Falls will help you plan your trip there.

Up until the early 1980s, Athirappilly Falls was pretty much unexplored and unheard of. However, it rose to prominence when the Kerala State Electricity Board put forward a controversial hydroelectric project that required a dam to be built upstream of the waterfall. The project was widely opposed for many reasons, including concerns that it would cause the waterfall to dry up.

In the late 1980s, Tamil movie "Punnagai Mannan" (King of Smiles) featured Athirappilly Falls as the setting for its iconic suicide scene. Kerala Tourism also started promoting the state and showed the waterfall in one of its captivating ad campaigns, further propelling the area into the limelight.

Since then, Athirappilly Falls has provided the picturesque backdrop for numerous South Indian and Bollywood films. Kidnapping, fighting, singing, dancing and romancing have all happened there. Hit movies such as "Guru," "Dil Se," "Khushi," "Yaariyan," "Raavan" and "Bahubali" made the waterfall famous and turned it into a popular attraction for Indian tourists, especially those living in Kerala.

Athirappilly Falls is located on the Chalakudy River, in the Sholayar Reserve Forest of Kerala's Thrissur district. It's about 25 miles (40 kilometers) northeast of Kochi airport, and 19 miles (30 kilometers) east of the nearest railway station at Chalakudy. The Chalakudy River originates in the Anamalai Hills of Tamil Nadu and is one of Kerala's longest rivers. It eventually joins the Kerala backwaters at Kodungallur and flows into the Arabian Sea at Azhikode, north of Kochi.

How to Visit

Athirappilly Falls can easily be reached in under two hours by taxi from Kochi airport or under an hour from Chalakudy, via State Highway 21 (the Chalakudy-Anamala Road). This highway runs through dense forest all the way to Tamil Nadu. A prepaid taxi from the airport will cost about 1,400 rupees.

Private and state buses also go to Athirappilly from Chalakudy. There are regular departures from the bus stands approximately every hour.

Alternatively, some tourists travel to Athirappilly Falls by road from the tea gardens of Munnar in Kerala (four hours southeast) or Valparai in Tamil Nadu (two and a half hours east).

Access to Athirappilly Falls is controlled by the Forest Department in conjunction with a collective of locals known as Vana Samrakshana Samithi. Entry opens at 8 a.m. and closes at 5 p.m. Tickets are required and cost 30 rupees for Indians and 100 rupees for foreigners. An additional camera fee of 20 rupees is payable as well. Parking costs 10-30 rupees, depending on vehicle type.

It's possible to see the waterfall from the roadside near the ticket counter, located just before the parking area. There are two more viewpoints inside the entrance — one at the top of the waterfall, and one at the bottom. Be prepared to walk about 10 minutes to reach each one.

The steep pathway down to the base of the waterfall through the forest requires some exertion, so it's not suitable for everyone. This trail is closed during periods of heavy rain for safety reasons. If you do go down to the base, ideally bring a change of clothes or wear a raincoat because the spray of the waterfall is really powerful and you will get wet.

There are plenty of snack stalls and small restaurants in the vicinity of the entrance to the waterfall. Don't carry food with you though or you'll risk getting robbed by menacing monkeys.

Most tourists choose to visit Athirappilly Falls during the monsoon season , from June to November in Kerala, as this is when the flow of the waterfall peaks (by August it usually covers the entire rock-face). The place gets particularly crowded and noisy during the state's Onam festival in August or September. If you're keen for a peaceful time, avoid weekends and public holidays too. Go towards the end of the monsoon season to minimize the likelihood of rain.

Want a bird's eye view of Athirappilly Falls? Splurge and stay in the tree house at the luxurious Rainforest Resort. This hotel directly fronts the waterfall, which is wonderfully visible from the guest rooms.

Budget travelers will find cheaper homestay options in the area, such as Lal Rachan and Richmond . Inexpensive hotels include Ambady Resort and Bethania Resorts. Try Clirind Resort , Willow Heights , or Casa Rio Resorts for something a bit more modern and upmarket.

What to See There

Athirappilly Falls is obviously the main attraction. It's 330 feet wide and has a vigorous vertical drop of 82 feet (about half that of Niagra Falls ). The viewpoint at the top looks out over the surrounding hills and waterfall. You'll need to go down to the base of the waterfall to really feel the full force of it though.

Tickets also provide entry to Vazhachal Falls, about 3 miles (5 kilometers) away on the same river. It's a scenic spot, although this waterfall flows more like rapids instead of having a vertical drop. On the way there you'll pass the smaller Charpa waterfall next to the roadside. It really comes alive during monsoon season and plunges onto the road.

Sholayar Reserve Forest has much to offer nature lovers. It's home to a diverse variety of flora and fauna. Most importantly, it's the only place with all four South Indian hornbill species — the Great Hornbill (Kerala's state bird), Malabar Pied Hornbill, Malabar Grey Hornbill, and the Indian Grey Hornbill.

What Else to Do Nearby

Kids will enjoy Thumboormozhi, on the way to Athirappilly Falls. It has a dam, butterfly garden, children's park, and long suspension bridge to Ezhattumukham-Prakriti Gramam Nature Village. It's a good stop for lunch.

Continue on past Athirappilly Falls and you'll reach Malakkappara tea garden close to the Tamil Nadu border. Travel time is about 1 hour and 45 minutes.

Thrissur District Tourism Promotion Council, in conjunction with Athirappilly Destination Management Council, conducts a full-day "jungle safari" tour covering the above attractions plus the waterfalls.

Other offbeat attractions in the area include Kauthuka Park (an award-winning privately landscaped nature garden), and Vachumaram Lake amid the forest.

There are a couple of water parks, Silver Storm and Dream World , near Athirappilly as well for more family fun.

As you walk down the stone slabs that lead to the base of the Athirappilly waterfalls, a mysterious serenity overcomes you. It is Kerala's most famous and largest waterfall at over 80 ft high. The sight of the water crashing onto the ground leaves you with a sense of wonder at the sheer power and magnificence of nature. Located around 63 km from Thrissur district, it is a perennial picnic spot for people in the area and  beyond. Its surrounding greenery is perfect for walks and picnics with loved ones. Lying at the entrance to the Sholayar forest ranges, it is a part of the Chalakudy River which calls the Western Ghats its home. Barely 5 km away is another family favourite, Vazhachal Waterfalls. These waterfalls became famous for not just their view but the endemic species found in the surrounding dense forests. Researchers have found four endangered species of the Hornbill here, the only place they thrive in the entire Western Ghats. Ornithologists attach great significance to this location and bird watchers can come across many rare and vibrant species in these parts.

Athirapally Falls In Kerala – Visitor’s Guide

Athirappilly is most commonly known as the land of rivers and forests, and it plays home to Kerala’s largest waterfall, Athirapally Falls, which is an impressive 80-foot tall!

I spent one full day exploring Athirapally Waterfalls and have put together this complete guide which includes everything you need to know before you go!

WHERE IS ATHIRAPALLY FALLS?

Athirapally Falls is located in Athirappilly Panchayat, Kerala.

Athirappilly Falls is 72 km northeast of Kochi and the journey time takes approximately two hours, depending on traffic.

HOW TO GET TO ATHIRAPALLY FALLS

There are two options for reaching Athirapally Water Falls which I have listed below.

Local buses operate daily from Kochi City to Chalakkudy, and the cost is around 20-30 rupees.

There are countless bus stations located around Kochi, so it’s best to ask your accommodation where the nearest one is to you. These buses are not air-conditioned.

There are also daily buses leaving from Kochin Airport to Chalakkudy, which are air-conditioned and the cost is between 80-100 rupees.

Once you reach Chalakkudy, Athirapally Waterfalls is a further 45-minute drive.

There is another bus that runs to Athirappilly from Chalakkudy that costs 20-30 rupees, or alternatively, you can take a tuk-tuk which will cost around 300-400 rupees.

If time is sensitive and budget is not an issue then I recommend you take a private taxi from Kochi directly to Athirappilly Falls which costs around 2000 rupees.

The taxis are air-conditioned and if you are traveling as a couple or a small group, sharing the cost of the taxi is the way to go.

WHAT TO EXPECT AT ATHIRAPALLY FALLS

Athirappilly Falls is often referred to as the Niagara Falls of India. This insanely beautiful waterfall is fed from the Chalakkudy River which originates from the upper reaches of the Western Ghats.

My friends and I arrived in Athirappilly at around 10 am and checked into the Rainforest Resort , where we stayed for one night.

There are many resorts and hotels in this region but this particular resort in Athirappilly offers the best views of Athirappilly Falls and it also has a private walking trail directly down to the base of the falls. What more could you want?

The trail down to Athirapally Waterfalls is a combination of steps and off-road terrain.

The casual hike only takes five to ten minutes before you reach the Chalakkudy River and here you can cross the shallow stream which emerges at a wide-open clearing, just fifty meters away from the base of the falls.

We spent the entire afternoon exploring and swimming around the shallow waters at the falls as there are many different rock pools to discover.

After we spent some time here we wandered up the river’s edge to get to a closer vantage point at the base of the falls.

There is a roped-off area where you can admire the insane power of Ahtirappilly Falls and do be aware that it is forbidden to cross over the ropes to get directly beneath the flow of water as this could cause heavy injury or death.

As tempting as it may be to get closer to the falls, please obey the rules in place.

Athirappilly Falls is surrounded by dense green rainforest and the curtain of silvery cascading water that thunders down the rockface is absolutely mesmerizing.

These falls are one of the biggest attractions in Kerala, for both locals and international travelers.

BEST TIME TO VISIT

The best time to visit Athirapally Waterfalls is during the monsoon season which is from mid-June to October.

This time is when Athirappilly Falls shows off its true form as heavy water rages down the Chalakkudy River and covers the entire rock face.

My friends and I visited Athirappilly Water Falls in April and although there wasn’t much water flow, the nature that surrounded us was still as beautiful as can be!

I believe we wouldn’t have been able to walk out into the middle of the river had it been during monsoon season, so we were lucky in that respect to be able to swim in the rock pools and enjoy the time we had there.

Ever wanted to escape to wilderness with rivers, forests and waterfalls galore? You do not have to look further as God's Own Country houses all these attributes that you've been looking for at Athirapally! Located in the Thrissur district of Kerala is the enchanting destination of Athirapally. Known famously for the slew of rivers that flow through the place and the waterfall, the tourist destination is a haven for nature lovers who want to soak in beauty and tranquillity. If you are visiting it for the first time, there are various tourist destinations in Athirapally that you should check out. From the famous Chalakudy river’s route to the Sholayar Dam, as Athirapally rests perfectly on the lap of the Western Ghats, you would be amazed by the sights and environment-friendly locales.

Tourist places to visit in Athirapally

Vazhachal Waterfalls

Along with Athirapally waterfalls, you can also visit the Vazhachal falls, which is located at a distance of only 7 km. Here's an important travel tip for those visiting the falls for the first time, you can book the same ride that brought you to Athirapally falls and ask them to show you around Vazhachal falls. Further, for those who enjoy trekking and wish to make it adventurous, you can opt the jungle route to reach the falls. Avoid taking a dip into the flowing water as the velocity of the water is quite rapid and is dangerous.

Charpa Waterfalls

God's own country is nothing but a series of mesmerising sights that would continue to enthral you. One of the pivotal tourist places in Athirapally is the Charpa falls. It is pretty famous for being centrally located en route Vazhachal from Athirapally. Charpa falls part of the Chalakudy river which pours down on the road to Vazhachal from Athirapally. In a series of seven steps from the top, the puddle of freshwater from the waterfall reaches the road. With such a picturesque natural phenomenon, the falls easily become one of the highlights of places near Athirapally waterfalls. Not to mention how the Charpa falls is also surrounded by the galvanising beauty of nature that would encapsulate your senses. The perks of visiting the falls are that it is on the way to Vazhachal so you wouldn't have to take any specific detour to visit the falls.

The distance between Illithode and Athirapally waterfalls is only about 9.8 km, making it an easy visit. Travellers who are heavily invested in the serenity and beauty of nature and wish to explore the nuances of ecotourism further, Illithode is the place born for you. The sublime locale, with its opulent green trees, and nature's aesthetics is something that would keep you busy. Everything about the place is soothing as a touch of nature would leave you in a tizzy. You can further take a dip in the freshwater that flows through the forests of Illithode. To reach the place, you can either hire a cab, or you can take a bus. It is well-connected from Athirapally so travelling wouldn't be an issue. Thumboormuzhi Dam

Fondly known as Butterfly Garden, the Thumboormuzhi Dam is another glorious waterbody that would leave you delighted. It is located about 14 km from the Athirapally waterfalls and should be visited. The garden is known to house over 148 diverse species of butterflies, hence the apt name. As you venture through the forests near the dam, you will be able to hear the sounds of the Chalakudy river flowing in the background. Imagine watching butterflies flutter around over the fresh waters with greenery in sight. Paints quite a picture, doesn't it? It is easily one of the top places to visit in Athirapally for families. The hues of the plants blossoming in the greenscape add quite the zing to the scenery that you probably won't find anywhere in the city. A nominal entry fee is charged to visit the butterfly garden for maintenance purposes. You will also be required to check the visiting hours before planning a trip.

Although it is located at a distance of 53.3 km away from Athirapally waterfalls, you should still pursue visiting the dam. Sprawled across 20 km, the exquisite Sholayar Dam is a beautiful structure that would leave you mesmerised. You can stand at the top of the dam and marvel at the sight of the stream of water, endlessly cascading while the green mountains in the background at to its beauty. There are many ways to reach the dam as you can hire a ride or you can take a bus too. It is advised that tourists get permission to visit the dam though as without it, the authorities would not permit you to pass through. Athirappilly waterfalls: The complete guide

The picturesque Athirappilly waterfalls in Thrissur district is a sought-after travel destination for tourists from across the world. Scores of travellers, both domestic and foreign, come to see the pristine waterfalls in all its glory, especially during the monsoon season. There is a marked spike in tourist footfall at Athirappilly after this popular spot found a place in many popular films, including the visually stunning 'Baahubali.'

The Chalakkudy river flows through the Vazhachal forest division before cascading down a series of falls at Vazhachal, Charpa and Athirappilly – making it a popular tourist destination. The water gushes down about 80 ft in a threefold fall that fills you with awe.

Athirappilly is also known as the 'Niagara of India' and the 'Punnagai Mannan Falls' for people from Tamil Nadu after the movie was shot here. Tickets can be bought from the counter just outside the entrance. There are a couple of shops that sell curios and snacks here.

Closer to the waterfalls, the plantations give way to lush green forests on of either sides. These forests are home to some rare flora and fauna. It is the home of four endangered Hornbills among various other bird and animal species. Once you are out of the vehicle, keep an eye out for them. If you are lucky, you can spot a hornbill or even listen to its piercing trill. Monkeys are common, do not feed them if you are not ready to handle the menace. And if you are going here during the months of October and November, keep an eye out for snakes too.

For a long long time, Athirappilly waterfalls has been one of the favourite shooting locations in Kerala. From Aishwarya Rai to Kareena Kapoor, Preity Zinta, Tamanna Bhatia and Bipasha Basu, there is perhaps no heroine in the Indian film industry who has not shaken a leg with this waterfall as the backdrop. Most often, the waterfall formed the backdrop of a romantic number. There were times when the forests around doubled up as a hideout for a villain or where the main characters came to end their lives.

Travel Tips

The falls have strong currents which can be quite dangerous. So it is best not to venture too far into the waters, especially if there are little kids.

This is a plastic free zone.

Visitors time is between 8 am to 5 pm.

Where to go

An attraction in the vicinity is the Vazhachal waterfall, which is 5km from Athirappilly. On the way to Athirappilly, which is on the Chalakudy-Valappara road, one can also visit Peringalkuttu Dam and the Charpa Waterfalls, where water flows only during the monsoon season. Other popular tourist stopovers are the Malakkapara, Chimmini wildlife, Vilangan Hills and the Marottichal waterfall situated 4km inside the forest.

Rich in biodiversity and amazing greenery, Malakkappara can be reached through the rainforests in Vazhachal area of the Western Ghats.

Pristine forests and tea gardens lie close to each other here, presenting a unique sight. Malakkappara is located on the Kerala-Tamil Nadu border and the forests are under the Vazhachal and Malayattoor divisions. Beyond Malakkappara, the thick forests give way to scenery of tea gardens.

While planning a trip, travellers can camp at Athirappilly or Malakkappara. There are several eateries near the waterfall.

Marottichal waterfalls

Located 15 km from Thrissur town, the waterfalls at Marottichal present scenic views during the monsoon. The main attraction of the place is the presence of numerous mini waterfalls. All along the narrow forest trekking path, these small falls provide a soothing sight. Marottichal is home to several bird species too.

This area is not known to host significant wildlife but it has the presence of a wide variety of wild animals and birds. Located near Amballoor in Mukundapuram taluk of Thrissur district, the Chimmini wildlife sanctuary also has a 75-m-tall dam. The Chimmini dam is part of the dam-to-dam tourism circuit.

The wildlife sanctuary is rich in facilities for trekking in the hills.

How to reach

Nearest Railway station: Chalakudy Railway station is about 28 kms from Athirappilly, however all trains do not stop at this station. The major stations nearby are Thrissur (52km) and Ernakulam (57km).

Nearest airport: Conveyance is easily available from Kochi International Airport and is about 32km from Athirappilly.

Buses are also available.

Where to stay

For the best view of the Athirappilly waterfalls in Thrissur district, a traveller should head to the Rainforest Resort . The overwhelming greenery of the forest, mango trees all around, and the waterfalls at a stone’s throw, draw visitors to the resort.

As soon as a traveller turns to the Athirappilly-Vazhachal road flanked by thick vegetation, one can feel the temperature falling. Even during hot summers, this area offers a pleasant weather.

A unique facility of Rainforest resort is the tree house which has been designed by a Swiss architect. One can stay closest to the forest here.

There are several swimming pools in the resort, for kids as well as for adults. The path down the pools lead to the forest. Facilities are arranged for sun bathing as well as for meditation.

A short trek through the forest takes you near the waterfalls. If you are feeling adventurous, there are steps that go down to the base of falls. It is easier and safer to go to the bottom of the falls in summer.

During the monsoons and the rainy season this pathway may get a bit slippery. You have to be very cautious. Standing near the falls during the rains is an awe-inspiring experience. The roar of the water and a mist of water droplets that light up in myriad colours when the suns ray strikes it paints a pretty picture.

To get a view of the waterfall, one needs to get down from the top of the waterfall for about 100 meters. There are guards with whistles at the bottom for the protection of travelers.

2. Bathe in the natural pools of the waterfall

The river above the waterfall has a lot of natural pools where you can relax and unwind. It is a common sight to see travelers bathing in the pools above the waterfalls. I am planning to visit athirapally in a single day while going from cochin to munnar.. if we leave cochin at 9.00 am, reach athirapally, spend some time there and continue towards munnar.. will this be possible? By what time we can reach munnar in this case?

It will be very hectic . We would advise you to stay in athirapally in night , enjoy waterfalls and proceed to Munnar the next day after breakfast

I am planning to visit Athirapally with my family having many kids (4-9 years ). Is it advisable to visit bottom or top of this fall with kids? I know the view is best from bottom but is it easily manageable to climb down n return back with kids?

1 Day Trip from Kochi to Athirapally Falls, Vazhachal falls & Ezhattumugam

It had been a hectic two weeks of work and travelling and we headed to Cherai which is just off the city of Kochi, Kerala, India and very near to Cochin International Airport for a few days of rest and digital detox. A work conference in the beautiful environs of the Radisson Blu in Karjat near Mumbai had just ended and we decided to head directly for our much-needed annual vacation to God’s own country, Kerala.

A Vistara flight deposited us at Cochin International Airport and we headed to a boutique hotel that nestled between the sea and the backwaters of our rendezvous with nature and tranquillity.

A Day Trip from Kochi to Athirapally Waterfalls, Vazhachal falls and Ezhattumugam | Athirappilly Falls

While in Cherai though we spent the major part of our time just lazing around and enjoying the vibes of the sea and the backwaters, we did not pass the opportunity of exploring the gems in the vicinity. We experienced a magical boat cruise on the backwaters , walked along the charming and quaint streets of Fort Kochi , and feasted our eyes on a  stunning sunset on the beach. Of course, a day trip to Athirapally Waterfalls also known as  Athirapally falls and Ezhattumugam from Kochi is always a must when you are in those parts.

The Drive to Athirapally Waterfalls from Cherai

After fortifying ourselves with a typical Kerala vegetarian breakfast of Idiyappam and vegetable stew we left Cherai to head to Athirapally falls at a distance of about 65 kilometers. We had seen the falls in a Bollywood movie where the heroine is shown frolicking in the waters and looked forward to seeing the place for real.

The drive through the scenic countryside of Kerala left us awed. The road meandered through thick vegetation of palm, coconut, and areca nut trees, and every once in a while an enchanting water body framed by the green of surrounding vegetation flashed past in enchanting splendor.

We passed through villages with neat houses, churches and temples stood side by side as a tribute to the harmony of nature and man. In one village outside the local church stood a stunning replica of  Michael Angelo’s Pieta. It seemed like the villages that we passed through had been intertwined with the environment around them and seemed in perfect harmony with nature.

Stop at Thumboormuzhy River Garden

We love road trips because they are so prone to serendipity and the discovery of unexpected gems. The Road trip to Athirapally falls proved a real bonanza in this context as we came across many treasures. One such pristine gem was the  T humboormuzhy River Garden we visited on our way to the Athirapally Falls.

We spent a quiet 30 minutes in the garden wandering through some lovely and scenic terrain.

The highlights of the place were the views of the river from a hanging bridge.

The park is also a natural home for butterflies and there are more than 146 species of these pretty and fragile being flitting from flower to flower in the garden. We were delighted to find this butterfly couple who looked so romantic.

The place also abounded in cute and friendly little monkeys, one of them had the makings of a supermodel and posed nonchalantly for us.

With a last glance at the Thumboormuzhy River Garden which had all the makings of a veritable Eden, we made our way back to our car to resume our interrupted journey to Athirapally Falls.

At Athirapally Waterfalls | Athirappilly Falls

We reached the entrance to the Athirapally Waterfalls in quick time and left the car to trek to the base of the waterfalls. The entrance to the falls itself looked quite nice, a structure made of bamboo with a thatched roof, it looked so much in harmony with the environment. As we started walking towards the falls, we were again greeted by the ubiquitous monkeys who were asking the visitors for food. We followed a rocky pathway into the woods. The pathway was one of gradual descent.

It is a pleasant walk in the shade of tall trees, however, the descent gets steeper as you move further.

You have to take the same route while returning as well and hence would involve some amount of climbing, so the trek to Athirapally Waterfalls is not advisable for elderly people or for people who are not physically fit or have medical issues . We always find waterfalls to be objects of sublime beauty. Be it anywhere they are precious gifts of nature to be experienced and admired. Even before you see them, you usually hear their sonorous sound. The same was the case with Athirapally Waterfalls, the sound of the roaring of the falls fell like music to our years, the falls were still hidden from view by the dense forest cover. However, one last stretch of steep descent brought us near the base of the falls.

The sight of the waters of the Chalakudy river cascading down from about 80 feet in two distinct streams was spectacular and sent a thrill of excitement through our spines. As the waters crashed down, they created a misty halo which looked fascinating.

One can manoeuvre oneself onto some rocks to get a closer look at the falls and also feel the spray of the water. Bathing in the waters of the fall here is risky and prohibited.

Time stood still as we stood in awe in front of the cascading flood of milky white water, we lost all sense of time and place as we lost ourselves in this exhilarating moment.

But all good things, the wonderful moments passed and crystallized in our memory as we retraced our steps back.

Bollywood films including Baahubali ,  Raavan , Guru , Dil Se and may Tamil and Malayalam films have been shot in the spectacular locales of the Athirapally Waterfalls.

Vazhachal Falls

A little distance further from the Athirapally Falls is another waterfall known as Vazhachal falls. These falls are not as spectacular as the Athirapally falls but have an enticing charm of their own as the waters cascade through rocks which look like steps. Athirapally and Vazhachal waterfalls, Thrissur, Kerala are indeed a visual treat and along with the Charpa fall form a trinity that entices visitors on a one day trip from Kochi.

Onwards to Ezhattumugam

We drove across some bad roads but beautiful landscapes, as we weaved in between Palm farms, the roads that took us straight into the very heart of the interior of the countryside and we revelled in the sheer calm and tranquillity that prevailed in the vicinity. Not even signboards marred the beauty of the pristine nature of the surroundings.

Ezhattumugam itself turned out to be a picture-postcard village, lush green and with a blissful serenity of undisturbed calm.

The river Chalakudy meandered lazily between rocks and small islets.

We took a walk on a stone embankment that took us to the centre of the meandering river and afforded some great views of birds basking in the sun.

A hanging bridge stretched lazily across the river connecting the two banks. The calm and serenity of    Ezhattumugam was a contrast to the spectacular nature of the Athirapally falls. If Athirapally Falls excited the senses,  Ezhattumugam soothed the soul. Our Ezhattumugam trip was bound to stay entrenched in our minds for a long, long time.

We were back in our car and heading towards Cherai, our physical beings were tired but spiritually we felt uplifted as we once again experienced the magic of God’s own country, a place that we firmly believe has been handcrafted by God. The Athirapally day tour turned out to be one of best one-day trips from Kochi for us.

The video is beautiful. Athirapally waterfalls seem to be one of the most majestic in India. They are quiet reachable from Kochi but a little further to the backwaters where we are headed in Feb. Yet inspired by your post, I will try to make it to the falls.

An Unforgettable Trip to the Pristine Athirapally Falls in Kerala

Earlier this year, when the winter in the north made it impossible for me to head to the mountains for a vacation, I decided that it was the perfect opportunity to explore Kerala. My week-long trip through the state showed me the beauty of India’s coast like never before. It’s been a long time since my trip, but there’s one place that left a great impact on the traveller inside me – Athirapally Falls .

Driving through the rainforest!

Situated near Kochi, my one-night trip to this waterfall was a memorable one. We left from Kochi early in the morning when there was still a slight chill in the air and the city had not yet burst to life. It was my first time in South India and I was thoroughly enjoying a drive through roads enveloped in palm, coconut, and areca nut trees. The majestic Shaloyar Rainforest bloomed unbound around me. The silence of the forest served as sweet music to which our car soared.

Upon reaching the falls, I was pleasantly surprised at how well they were maintained and managed. My friend and I had taken this trip through a package, and so, we also had a guide who joined us at Athirapally. Krishnan was a young, energetic man who had grown up in the Thrissur region all his life. As a welcome greeting, Krishnan got us both coconut water! Our visit was off to a happy start already, but little did we know that this was just a preparation for the two-kilometre trek that awaited us.

As I huffed and puffed, my friend told me that all the effort would be worth it because she had a surprise for me in store. I was intrigued and impressed, and so I kept walking.

Experiencing the famed Athirapally Falls

This vantage point offered a gorgeous view of Athirapally pouring into the Chalakudy River.

As we made our way over the moist and slippery path, we could already hear the waterfall roaring in the distance. From the waterfall's sound, we could make out that this wasn't going to be an average waterfall that we were used to seeing in North India.

On the way, we caught a glimpse of Athirapally from in between the forest. I was shocked to see that the entire rock face was covered by the cascading waterfall. It was as if a silver curtain had draped itself over the rock. The sight was magical to say the least. We stood in complete silence, admiring the beauty of the falls, until Krishnan started narrating stories of how he had watched the shooting of Bahubali t ake place here! I was excited to know that songs from blockbuster Hindi films like Guru , Raavn and Dil Se were also shot here.

The volume and velocity of the falls was so high that the area was covered in mist!

We then made our way to the foot of the falls where the water was comparatively calmer. The falls created pools of blue in which we splashed and swam at leisure. Hungry after the swim, we decided that it was time to say bye-bye to the falls and look for a restaurant around to grab a bite. I wanted to stay just a little longer, I wanted to spend more time exploring the falls and enjoy their therapeutic sounds. While I wallowed in sorrow and threw a mini-tantrum about the same, my friend reminded me that there was a surprise for me in store.

A surprise like no other

I wondered to myself, "Were we going to camp somewhere for the night? Were we heading to another destination?" I had no clue until we reached a resort enveloped within the forest. Suddenly, I knew what the surprise was – my friend had booked us a stay at the Rainforest Resort which was right at the foot of the falls!

Our stay for the night was not in an average hotel room, but in a tree-house overlooking the falls. Situated amid complete wilderness, our stay gave us a true experience of living in a rain forest. It was fascinating to observe how the sounds of the forest changed as dusk gave way to the night. Darkness enveloped us, and all we could hear were the rustling of leaves in the wind, the sound of crickets and an occasional crunch of twigs in the distance. Life in the forest was going on as per usual, but unknowingly, it had instilled a sense of wonder in two new people.

Our delicious spread for the night

We had dinner on the tree house's deck where we were served a a feast called Kerala Sadhya . Served on a banana leaf, this is a traditional Malayali dish that has numerous accompaniments — a spread of curries, chutneys, lentils and rice. We ate with our hands, and thoroughly enjoyed the authentic flavours of Kerala. The mild flavour of coconut, the aroma of curry leaves and the bitterness of curd in the dishes satiated the foodie in me. As someone who has always associated only sambar-dosa with South India, this meal wasn't just a treat to my taste buds but also made me more culturally aware.

After dinner, while lounging on the deck of our tree house and gazing into the night, we realised that the forest was glittering with hundreds of fireflies! It seemed as though a Disney movie was unfolding right in front of us, and at any moment, a fairy would appear out of nowhere and glide around us playfully.

A little away from the falls, the water was calm, giving us the perfect opportunity for a swim!

That night, I slept with a smile on my face because I was just so happy to be where I was. As the sun rose next morning, we headed out to explore the falls and the surrounding area. It was beautiful to see the fall's water shimmer under the sun's ray. It was even more exciting to enjoy the place with no tourists early this morning. We discovered trails around the waterfall and had a gala time jumping in tiny pools beneath the falls.

Athirapally plunged beautifully and I earnestly wished that the water-flow was not harsh and fatal. A statuary warning if you're heading to Athirapally – no mater how inviting the cool waters look, don't give into the urge of jumping into pools or making your way through rocks and routes that are unsafe.

After a hearty breakfast that comprised of the best sambhar, dosa and idlis that I have ever had, we ended our tiny adventure and made our way onward towards Vazhachal Falls and Thumboormuzhy Dam. For a waterfall enthusiast like me, Athirapally was everything I could ask for, and more. If you're heading to Kerala, don't miss a visit to this paradise.

At a distance of 24 km from Pollachi and 43 km from Valparai, Aliyar Dam is an earthen dam located at Aliyar village in Coimbatore district of Tamil Nadu. It is one of the popular dams in the Coimbatore district and among the prime places to visit in Valparai. Built across the Aliyar River, the Aliyar Dam was constructed during 1959-1969 mainly for irrigation purposes. Azhiyar Dam was inaugurated on 2nd October 1962 by then Prime minister of India Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru and was commissioned in 2002 to generate Hydro Electric Power. The dam is located in the foothills of Valparai, in the Anaimalai Hills of the Western Ghats. The height of the dam is 81 m. There is a well-maintained park built at bottom of the Dam along with an aquarium, a mini Themed - Park and play area maintained by Tamil Nadu Fisheries Corporation. 2 Monkey Falls

At a distance of 5 km from Aliyar Dam, 27 km from Pollachi, and 38 km from Valparai Bus Station, Monkey Falls is a natural waterfall situated in the Coimbatore district of Tamil Nadu. Situated on the Pollachi-Valparai road in the Anamalai Hills range, it is one of the magnificent waterfalls near Coimbatore , and among the best places to visit as part of Pollachi packages . Situated near Aliyar Dam, Monkey Falls is cascading down from a height of about 60 feet into a pool. Owned and managed by Peria Karumalai Tea Industries, the temple amidst tea estates and sprawling hill ranges, gives visitors a sense of frosty and serene atmosphere. This waterfall drops down from a height of 80 feet through several parallel streams offering a great scenic beauty. 3 Nirar Dam

At a distance of 9 km from Valparai Bus Station, Nirar Dam is an artificial dam situated in the hill town of Valparai. It is one of the most interesting places to see in Valparai. Nirar Dam was a small dam built across Nirar River at a lower site, about 8 km, below the Upper Nirar weir. This dam will serve to conduct the diverted waters of the Anamalai Basin to the Sholayar valley through the unlined lower Tunnel taking off from the dam site. In addition to this, the yield of the catchment between the Upper Nirar Weir and the Dam will also be diverted to the Sholayar basin. The Nirar Dam was constructed mainly for irrigation purposes and to provide hydroelectricity to the area. One can also visit nearby Chinna Kallar Waterfalls.
