Live Review: Austra + Ela Minus + Foxture @ Motorco Music Hall – January 29th 2017

Austra, the synthpop project of opera-trained singer Katie Stelmanis, has hit the ground running in 2017 with a new album and tour. Future Politics is the third full length from Austra, following 2013’s Olympia . For this outing, Toronto-based songwriter and producer, Stelmanis wrote and produced the entire album on her own. Future Politics presents a vision of a dystopian future filtered through a current world of confusion and unease. Driven by swelling synths and carefully sculpted dance-floor beats, the songs are ultimately guided by Stelmanis’ soaring vocals that are both powerful and delicate. Future Politics was released on January 20th, and Austra hit the tour trail for a run of North American headlining shows the same day. With the tour just starting to pick up momentum, the band stopped at Motorco Music Hall in Durham NC.

The evening started off with local area band Foxture playing through a set of atmospheric indie pop that included songs from their 2015 EP, Circles . Their performance was well received and set the mood for the evening. Next up and celebrating her final night on tour with Austra was Ela Minus, the solo project of Brooklyn-based Colombian musician Gabriela Jimeno. Ela Minus was a one woman band who sang and generated a big full sound standing center stage behind a makeshift travel case desktop of synths and sequencers, generating loops and beats by hand. Jimeno’s songs balanced a beat driven and effervescent synth soundscape with light, almost childish, vocals delivered in both English and Spanish. Her set definitely resonated with the audience and fans were still buzzing after she left the stage.

With anticipation building and smoke swirling around the stage, the lights dropped and the current four piece incarnation of Austra took the stage. Katie Stelmanis, dressed in a flowing green gown, glided into the light at the center of the stage and the band kicked off with “We Were Alive,” the opening track from Future Politics . They would continue to play through the next three songs from the new album in order before stepping back and playing “Forgive Me” from the previous album, Olympia . The setlist was heavy with songs from both Future Politics and Olympia . Despite the dark and somewhat brooding themes, the new songs were given a harder edge in the live setting and delivered with more of a pared down throbbing dance club vibe. Katie’s authoritative vocals were every bit as impressive live as they sound when captured in the studio. Her voice soared through the room mesmerizing the crowd. By the time they closed the set with a trio of older songs, “Beat And The Pulse,” “Lose It,” and “The Villain,” the room had evolved into a full-blown dance party.

Katie Austra Stelmanis has been better known by her middle name for three albums, ten years, and countless numbers of tours.

“When you know the one you’re with is bad for you but you’re too scared to quit.

You say: ‘I love you, I don’t want to lose you…’

And they wear their crown of shit, upon their liar's chair, while leeching off your devotion.”

(Austra, 2020)

Katie Austra Stelmanis has been better known by her middle name for three albums, ten years, and countless tours. She wrote, produced, and performed all her own records, occasionally sharing the spotlight with a band to tour live. From the outside, things were going really well for a while: she built a devoted fan base and sold out shows all around the world. However, on the inside, Stelmanis was beginning to feel stagnant and uninspired. “I was losing faith in my own ideas,” she explains. Without realising it, she’d got caught up in a toxic relationship that was tearing her apart.

It wasn’t until Stelmanis was ready to face her insecurities that she was able to see a way forward: “My creative and personal relationships were heavily intertwined, and I knew the only answer was to part ways with all of the people and comforts that I’d known for the better part of a decade and start again.” Alongside making changes in her personal life, starting again also meant taking an entirely different approach to making a record. New single “Risk It” is her first new music since 2017 and marks a new chapter for Austra.

Innovative electro ensemble Austra put on quite a show when a few friends and I want along to see them perform.

All of us were hugely impressed by classically trained Stelmanis’ soft yet piercing voice, and although we didn’t know very many of their songs, we found that it was all to easy to bob and groove along to the vast majority of the songs that the band played.

The sombre tone that her vocals strike gives rise to an effective sense of tension between her voice and the upbeat synth driven instrumental parts of their tracks. The exaggerated build up of ‘What We Done?’ was a great way to open proceedings, but their most popular song to date, ‘Lose It’ was definitely the track that was best received by the audience. Austra’s 2013 album ‘Olympia’ is certainly worth a listen, and if you can get to one of their shows any time soon I would definitely recommend it! The band’s subtle and infectious sounds make for a great evening out!

Austra has an other-worldly ability to translate what could be a very standard live performance set into something more dramatic and operatic. I have seen Austra many times and this performance holds true to their past sets. The played the perfect mix of songs from all albums and gave us a special treat with their latest single - Habitat. Katie's vocals paired with the heavy synth and digital influence of the track made it the clear highlight of my evening. As you would expect their encore packed in more drama and lyrical magic with Maya's solo drum intro leading into an acoustic track from their upcoming EP. Can't wait to get lost in another one of their shows in the future. If you have never seen them live, you should treat yourself to this arty, and very talented band.

This band never disappoints and their following has grown tremendously over the past few years. Last time I saw them in Dallas the venue, Trees, was packed but only a handful of people were able to sing along. Now,the whole audience sang along like a choir. No matter when they perform you feel the music deep inside and can't help but dance and rave. You know how some concerts are described as a religious experience? That is Austra!

Awesome show! Great lighting and visual effects. The music was stellar and lead singer' voice amazing as usual. She was wearing fabulous yellow velvet 70's top with matching pants. Keyboard player was wearing an equally fun outfit. They were dressed for the occasion and they turned the Exit/In into a dance party. So glad they came to Nashville! I will jump at the chance to see them again.

Exactly what I had anticipated! Her voice is even better live than on recording. Perfect pitch and threw in so many variants of notes just to switch up what you would hear in the recordings. They also threw much more of a house vibe into the show. Great to finally see them live and in such an intimate setting. Would definitely see again.

Enjoyed the show in Zurich last night! Great songs, voice and performance. But Austras band mates were in a strange mood and the seemed like they needed some cheering up... in a small venue like the mascotte in zurich the mood of the band is essential and visible to the audience. one smile towards the audience wouldnt hurt...

Austra was amazing. With the fog and the stage lighting behind her giving this mysterious vibe and her strong vocals to follow suit it was quite a captivating concert which I had no expectations of enjoying as much as I did. It was a pleasent surprise. Shame there weren't more people to enjoy it.

Feel It Break

Domino / Paper Bag

May 16, 2011

On her own and under her own name, Katie Stelmanis used to record synthetic art-pop. This was tense and jarring music, music that jumped around and demanded attention. Austra, Stelmanis' new band, makes just as much use of her stretched-out yip and her theatrical instincts, but the music is a lot warmer and more comfortable. Austra play a warm, hazy sort of electro-goth. It's synthetic and repetitive, and there's plenty of Giorgio Moroder in its DNA, but it's not dance music. Instead, it's music for a planetarium, or maybe for a mid-1980s PBS science documentary. Austra's synth riffs don't pound or undulate; they flutter and envelop. And Stelmanis doesn't sing over the top of their tracks; she emits sound from somewhere in the thick of it.

Feel It Break , Austra's debut album, is essentially made up of 11 minor variations on a single sound-- no complaint, since they're good at that one sound. It's tough to talk about Stelmanis' icy, high-pitched deadpan delivery without mentioning Kate Bush. By that same token, it's tough to talk about the band's music without mentioning Witching Hour -era Ladytron, or maybe Bat for Lashes. This is pretty and heady music, music that can subtly change the air in the room where it's playing. Drums lightly percolate rather than thud, and synth riffs hide inside each other like Russian nesting dolls, gradually revealing themselves over the course of entire songs. And the group builds these things patiently. Often, it holds back on introducing vocals or drums for more than a full minute, letting the songs' feel develop before making any radical changes.

These songs aren't entirely alike. First single "Beat and the Pulse" has a telescoping sort of push-pull to it; it's the closest the band ever comes to genuine dance music, and even it doesn't come that close. On "Lose It", Stelmanis gets a chance to stretch her huge, tremulous voice over some minimally invasive synth backing, and she sounds titanic: "Don't wanna loooooose ya." The bouncy art-pop piano on "Shoot the Water" has a certain twitchiness, bringing Stelmanis partway back to her solo days. And closing tracks "The Noise" and "The Beast" do away with percussion entirely, letting Stelmanis sing over miasmic synth fog on the former and floridly ghostly piano on the latter.

Even with those variations, though, Feel It Break still works as a monochromatic album, one content to stick with the same shade of glimmering darkness. Onstage at SXSW a couple of months ago, Austra cut a stark figure-- Stelmanis backed by two stunning, harmonizing twins, the rest of the band half-hidden at the back of the stage. Even playing in the middle of an absurdly sunny day, the band seemed to exist in some vague state of perpetual glamorous nighttime; that could've been them, not Bauhaus, serenading David Bowie and Catherine Deneuve during the great opening scene of Tony Scott's otherwise bullshit vampire movie, The Hunger . On Feel It Break , they've got that creeping cinematic synth-psych style down cold. Moving forward, I'm curious to hear what else they can do.

PHOENIX, Arizona — former lead guitarist for Genesis is recovering after he had an adverse reaction to medication to treat bronchitis, forcing him to cancel a concert moments before it was to begin.

Steve Hackett wrote in a post on Facebook that he had a “last-minute adverse reaction” to the medication before Saturday’s show at the Celebrity Theatre in Phoenix. He was taken to a hospital for treatment.

“I’m so sorry for the scare,” Hackett writes. “I’d hoped to power through the Phoenix show but I had a bronchial infection and a last-minute adverse reaction to medication. Consequently, the medics took me to hospital.

“I am now recovering and glad to be feeling okay. I was very sad to miss the show and I will return to play in Phoenix as soon as possible. My thanks to you all for your understanding and support.”

A spokesperson tells the Los Angeles Times that Hackett intends to reschedule the Phoenix show.

On Tuesday, Hackett again posted on Facebook saying “Hello Mexico! All clear and hear I come!” He was scheduled to play Wednesday night in Guadalajara, Mexico, and Friday in Mexico City. USA Today reports the tour focuses on “Foxtrot,” an album he recorded with Genesis during the 1970s, and on “The Circus and the Nightwhale,” a solo album he released in February.

Hackett was with Genesis from 1971 to 1977 with vocalist Peter Gabriel, keyboardist Tony Banks, bassist Mike Rutherford and drummer Phil Collins, and played on six studio albums. Hackett left the band in October 1977, saying he “needed autonomy.”

K.C. & the Sunshine Band, Rose Royce, Dazz Band to play in Tuscaloosa

austra band tour

KC & the Sunshine Band, Rose Royce, Dazz Band will play Tuscaloosa's Mercedes-Benz Amphitheater at 6:30 p.m. June 7. Tickets go on sale at noon Friday through www.ticketmaster.com , or at the venue's box office, 2710 Jack Warner Parkway, downtown Tuscaloosa. Prices will be $99.50, $89.50, $59.50, $49.50, $29.50 and $19.50, not including fees and taxes.

Harry Wayne Casey lent his name to the disco-funk-pop band he co-founded in 1973, tied to the Sunshine State where it began, in Hialeah. Bass player Richard Finch was Casey's frequent co-writer, and brought in studio musicians and others from local bands.

Their hits included "(Shake Shake Shake) Shake Your Booty," "I'm Your Boogie Man," "Get Down Tonight," "That's the Way (I Like It)," "Keep it Comin' Love," "Boogies Shoes," "Give It Up," and "Please Don't Go." KC and the Sunshine Band scored five No. 1s among those hits. Casey and Finch also wrote and produced for others, including the hit "Rock Your Baby" and "Queen of Clubs" for George McCrae.

As disco's glimmer faded, Casey had a duet hit with Teri DeSario on "Yes I'm Ready." Finch and he split, and Casey went into hiatus in the mid-'80s, but reformed the band, using some old and some new members, releasing compilations, live albums and some new original music.

Rose Royce worked up its first major success with the No. 1 "Car Wash," theme to the 1976 comedy movie. The soul-R&B group's other hits include "I Wanna Get Next to You," "Love Don't Live Here Anymore," "I'm Going Down" and "Wishing on a Star."

The Dazz Band has played the Mercedes-Benz Amphitheater in 2022, before it was renamed, as part of the Flashback Fun Fest. The name refers to its intended niche, disco jazz. The Cleveland, Ohio-born group's hits include "Let It Whip," "Joystick" and "Let it All Blow."

  • "Waiting a Lifetime"

The new album from Lo Moon , I Wish You Way More Than Luck , takes its title from a somewhat well-known quote by the writer David Foster Wallace. It was said to outgoing graduates, in a commencement speech. It's fitting, because Lo Moon's Matt Lowell returned to his old campus in Connecticut to get inspired by the place he first performed as a musician, Clark Memorial Chapel. It was the spark that put I Wish You Way More Than Luck into action.

In this mini-concert, the psychedelic pop band out of Los Angeles joins World Cafe for a performance recorded in London at The Lexington in 2023. Enjoy.

This episode of World Cafe was produced and edited by Will Loftus. The web story was created by Miguel Perez. Our senior producer is Kimberly Junod. Our engineer is Chris Williams. Our programming and booking coordinator is Chelsea Johnson.

Bruce Springsteen gets a flat tire in Jersey, gets to Mohegan Sun concert on time

Flat notes are rare at Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band concerts.

Nor do flat tires stop the show.

Springsteen posted a pic of himself on his Instagram story sitting next to an SUV with a flat tire in the Keyport area of the Jersey Shore on his way to the E Street Band's Friday, April 12 show at Mohegan Sun in Uncasville, Connecticut.

Springsteen had apparently just started out for Mohegan Sun from his home in Colts Neck. Repairs were made and the Boss, wearing a tie and vest, took the stage on time at 7:45 p.m.

No mention of the unscheduled pit stop was made from the stage. Springsteen and the E Street Band performed a spirited 27 songs over 2 hours and 45 minutes. Tour debuts included “Seeds” and “I'm on Fire.” The gospel-stirred “My City of Ruins” was included, and it's become a statement of mission for the current run of shows, which began March 19 at the Footprint Center in Phoenix. Multiple shows were postponed last S eptember as Springsteen had a bout of peptic ulcer disease.

“We're here tonight to bring the joyous power of rock 'n' roll into your life,” said Springsteen during the “My City of Ruins” intro. “We're here to bring some (blanking) fun. We are here to wake you up and to shake you up and take you up to higher ground!”

The show, the band's first on the East Coast in eight months, was looser and seemingly more improvised than those of last year's tour. The night's first two songs, “Roll of the Dice” and “Lucky Towns,” were appropriate for the show's setting — inside a casino.

Springsteen popped a bottle of champagne as he walked on stage, and a pink bra was thrown at him late in the show during “Rosalita (Come Out Tonight).” Steven Van Zandt picked up the bra and put it on the neck of Springsteen's guitar.

The Boss threw it back into the sold-out audience of 10,000 during the build-up of “Rosalita's” final chorus.

“Thank you, you guys are great — you made the whole evening fun! I love Uncasville, wherever the heck it is! As a matter of fact, I'm moving to Uncasville tomorrow,” Springsteen, 74, said at the close of the show.

Friday's show was rescheduled from Sept. 16, 2023. Up next is Monday, April 15 at the MVP Arena in Albany, New York.

Your 48-hour tour guide of Moscow this winter!

austra band tour

9 am – Visit the Red Square

Christmas market on Red Square

Christmas market on Red Square

The first thing that every tourist should do by default is visit the very heart of Moscow – it’s main and most beautiful (which ‘krasnaya’ actually meant in Old Russian) square!

There are several ways to explore it:

  • Take a selfie with Spasskaya Tower
  • Have a warm drink at the Christmas market (which lasts until mid-January)
  • Visit Lenin’s Mausoleum
  • Shop in the gorgeous adjacent GUM department store
  • Visit St. Basil’s Cathedral (and learn that it’s actually several churches under one roof).

11 am – It’s Kremlin time!

Inside the Moscow Kremlin

Inside the Moscow Kremlin

Entering the Kremlin is, actually, a bit of a quest, as it’s a presidential facility with no general access. You need to buy a ticket or, better still, book a guided tour. Inside the Kremlin’s walls, you will find ancient cathedrals, in which Russian tsars used to be crowned and buried, as well as explore the magnificent architecture of the Kremlin that reflects the rich history of the country. And, finally, you could also make a quick visit to the Moscow Kremlin Museums and admire artifacts from various Russian tsarist eras: carriages, thrones, crowns and the most incredible armory and jewelry.

For more information, visit the official website of the Kremlin . It’s open from 10 am to 5 pm (and it’s closed on Thursdays) in winter.

2 pm – Watch the changing of the Guard

The honor guard at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier

The honor guard at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier

A very spectacular (and free) thing to do is watch how the honor guard does their ceremonial change at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier and the Eternal Flame, situated in Alexander Garden, right next to the Kremlin wall. Every hour, from 8 am to 8 pm, the 1st Company of the Kremlin (Presidential) Regiment performs this rather old and beautiful tradition. But, be warned, it's often overcrowded.

3 pm – Enjoy a green oasis just in the center

Florarium in Zaryadye

Florarium in Zaryadye

Just a few steps from the Red Square, you will find the fabulous Zaryadye park. Opened in 2017, it is designed by renowned American architect bureau ‘Diller Scofidio + Renfro’. You can walk among the very cozy botanical decorations and explore Russia’s climate zones, as each of them is represented in dedicated areas, complete with flora from those zones.

The floating bridge in Zaryadye Park

The floating bridge in Zaryadye Park

The park also has an underground museum, an “ice cave” and a 3D cinema, where you can take part in a virtual adventure – a flight over Moscow! However, the piece de resistance is a floating boomerang bridge over the Moskva River, one of the best places to take a selfie.

You can also grab a quick lunch or relax with a cup of coffee or tea in the park.

7 pm – Arrange a ballet night

The Bolshoi Theater

The Bolshoi Theater

Of course, the most fancy way to finish your day in Moscow would be to go to the ballet at the Bolshoi Theater (in a perfect world, to see ‘The Nutcracker’!). However, getting tickets to the Bolshoi is not an easy task and should be done well in advance of your visit.

But, don’t be upset if you don’t manage to get tickets to the Bolshoi. Moscow has dozens of other options to see a ballet (or opera). No less brilliant performances can be seen in the Stanislavsky and Nemirovich-Danchenko Music Theater or in The State Kremlin Palace (by the way, this is another way to get a quick glimpse inside the Kremlin!).

10:30 pm – Have a late dinner in a fancy restaurant

Dr Zhivago restaurant

Dr Zhivago restaurant

There are not so many other cities with such a big choice of restaurants in a range of tastes and styles. In 2021, the authoritative Michelin guide announced their pick of the best of Moscow’s restaurants. And here’s our guide to all the places with Russian cuisine for any budget. But, if you happen to be in the area of the Bolshoi or Nemirovich-Danchenko Theater, then ‘Dr. Zhivago’ would definitely be a nice option (and it’s open around the clock).

DAY 2

9 am – grab a moscow coffee.

Winter festivities mood in Moscow

Winter festivities mood in Moscow

Moscow is definitely a coffee city! You can find coffee shops on every corner and they all offer a huge range of drinks. Try a ‘raf’ coffee, a sweet, creamy drink that was created in Russia, or dare to pick one of the very unusual offers, like cheese coffee or a Soviet candy style one (check out our coffee guide here ).

10 am – Take a river cruise

Winter boating along the Moskva River

Winter boating along the Moskva River

Another exciting way to explore Moscow is to observe it from the water. Boats cruise along the Moskva River all year round. Most begin their route from the Hotel Ukraine, one of Stalin's ‘Seven Sister’ skyscrapers, and will bring you back to the same spot after passing the medieval Novodevichy Convent, Moscow State University and Luzhniki Stadium, the Cathedral of Christ the Saviour and giant monument to Peter the Great and many other sightseeings.

It’s always at optimum temperature inside the boat, which also has huge panoramic windows. Select boats also offer a full dining experience, so it is also a nice place to have breakfast or lunch.

If you are not a water person, then discover other, unusual sides of Moscow – pick one of the activities we’ve prepared for you here !

1 pm – Visit ‘Russia’ Expo and taste a bunch of Russian regional cuisines

Russia Expo at VDNKh

Russia Expo at VDNKh

Until April 2024, the Soviet-era VDNKh exhibition park is hosting the huge ‘Russia’ expo, with tons of activities and expositions devoted to Russia, its culture, science and nature. Check out our special guide on what to do there!

An entire ‘House of Russian Cuisine’ has been opened at the expo. You will find 15 food stands with flagship dishes from Kamchatka, Siberia, Karelia and other regions of Russia. Imagine trying a range of cuisines and dishes in one place without even having to travel anywhere, be it Altai pelmeni, Tula kalach or Caucasian pies! A perfect place to grab some lunch.

House of Russian cuisines at VDNKh

House of Russian cuisines at VDNKh

The VDNKh exhibition park is a great place to visit, in general! Its pavilions are the perfect example of Stalinit Empire style architecture and you can almost feel as if you’ve traveled back in time! You will also find several interesting museums in the park – devoted to space exploration, Russian history and even a ‘Special Purpose Garage’, which showcases the various vehicles used by the country’s leaders.

'Sun of Moscow' wheel

'Sun of Moscow' wheel

And, finally, you can ride Europe's tallest panoramic wheel – ‘Sun of Moscow’ – that will give you panoramic views of the city – from a height of 140 meters!

5 pm – Ice skate with view & mulled wine

Ice skating rink on Red Square (GUM department store on the background)

Ice skating rink on Red Square (GUM department store on the background)

Ice skating is one of the most popular and affordable activities in Moscow. There are several great ice skating rinks in picturesque locations that are open all winter long. One of the biggest rinks in Europe is also at the aforementioned VDNKh or you can visit the one in Gorky Park, another very popular Moscow spot, or the small, but fancy rink – right on Red Square!

All the parks offer ice skate rental, so the only things you need are warm clothes, a charged phone to record your memories and a good mood!  Moscow also gets dark at 4:30 pm in winter and hundreds of lights are switched on, turning the city into a giant fairy tale!

A mulled wine with a view

A mulled wine with a view

And, if you are not a sports person, we’ve picked several other unusual activities that you could do in Moscow instead. For example, did you know that there is an entire district of dacha (countryside) houses, just 10 minutes from the center, surrounded by giant new highrises? How about taking a stroll there and feeling the early Soviet atmosphere?

8 pm – Warm up & laugh out loud

After all these outdoor activities, what could be better than a warm cozy bar with a hot drink and nice company? Moscow is a city full of entertainment for all tastes. So, if you know the Russian language or want to practice it, go to a theater or catch a stand-up comedy show. Moscow even has comedy shows in English, where you can hear both Russians speaking fluent English or foreigners (including Brits and Americans) who live in Russia speaking in broken or heavily-accented Russian (Check their show dates on the ‘ Moscow English Comedy ’ Telegram channel)!

11 pm – Finish by partying the night away!

Propaganda club in Moscow

Propaganda club in Moscow

Moscow never sleeps, as you might have heard. Which means there are plenty of bars and nightclubs where you can have a drink (or two or three; be sure to check out how Russians make Black Russian and White Russian cocktails) and chat with incredibly different people. Have fun and don’t miss your flight (or miss it and stay longer in the best city in the world!)!

That's it! See you soon in Moscow
