What is Booking Experiences and How to Make the Most of It

What is booking experiences, booking.com relies on actionable insights to develop their experiences platform, should you list your offers on booking experiences, booking experiences commission fees, wrapping up.

The experience economy, as well as the shift to buying experiences over things, has been studied since the 90s. It is also well understood  that travel is the ultimate experience which is why experiential travel marketing and branding is currently one of the top tourism trends .

Indeed, planning a trip is not just about finding the best accommodation: It is about finding and having the best experience. What does that mean?

Simply put, users want to quickly and easily find the best things to do in the destinations they are traveling to. Booking.com studied that desire and behavior, understood it, and then delivered it in the form of Booking.com Experiences.

Booking.com Experiences was initially developed to complement Booking.com’s main offering: accommodation. Its addition to the Booking.com products and services suite means that travelers can now book their entire trip in one place: from accommodation to walking tours and museum visits .

Let’s go deeper to see what Booking.com Experiences is all about and how you can get in on the action.

Tours and activities are usually found via hotel front desks or directly from tour and activity providers. However, the mobile generation, mostly millennials, prefer to use their phones to research and instantly book a tour or activity.

This change in user behavior saw the rise of several online booking tour and activity wholesalers , like TripAdvisor and Airbnb. Booking.com also decided to dip its feet in the game.

Booking.com immersed itself in the tours and activities sector in 2016 with a digital product called Experiences. You’re probably thinking it sounds a lot like aforementioned TripAdvisor or Airbnb Experiences .

Booking.com Experiences is a tad bit  different.

The Experiences category was created to enable travelers to book everything they need for their vacation in a central place. Yes, think of it as a mobile hotel concierge desk.

When travelers book a room in a city that Booking.com Experiences is available in, they get a varied selection of local tours and activities with special discounts or benefits like skipping the line.

It previously only offered Experiences to customers that booked a hotel in a destination where Experiences was available. Users would get a link after they book a hotel — a link that takes them to a personalized landing page with a list of tour and activity offerings in the city they are touring.

Sounds pretty novel right? Well, the novelty really lies in the technology Booking.com uses.

It uses artificial intelligence (AI) with mobile so travelers can instantly book attractions and tours using a QR code. It specifically uses AI and machine learning to predict traveler’s intent to provide a customized experience; faster and simpler payment options; and priority queuing. It also provides personalized experiences based on prior travel preferences.

Ram Papatla, Vice President of Experiences at Booking.com, says , “We’re constantly exploring new ways to leverage technology in order to facilitate seamless and enjoyable travel experiences for our customers at every stage of their journey and with Booking Experiences, we’re doing just that.”

Let’s take a more detailed look at how it works.

Booking.com users that are vacationing or living in any of the cities where Experiences is available have access to all participating tour and activity providers and venues, via a single QR code .

The QR code is linked to the user’s preferred credit card to make the payment process as seamless as possible. That method cuts the need for travelers to make advanced bookings or stand in long queues to buy tickets.

Booking.com Experiences users simply show up to the venue, scan the QR code and enjoy the tour or activity at a special or discounted rate. Some Booking.com customers find that too good to be true !

booking experiences top things to do in amsterdam

Travelers can select from an extensive list of participating tours, activities and venues prior to arrival or while they are at the destination. One of the novel aspects of Booking.com Experiences is that customers are only charged for the activities they want to experience, which means that they can change their itineraries at any time or decide to attend tours and activities last minute (without worrying that their spot will be taken).

Booking.com understands that the decision to book a tour or activity is quite spontaneous, hence that approach.

booking experiences top things to do in amsterdam 1

Booking.com Experiences is currently available in select cities in the United States, Europe, Asia, Australia and the Middle East.

Booking.com revamps its mobile app with the insights they get from millions of customers about their destination/experiences likes and dislikes. They then pair that data with customers’ previous travel preferences, their current location and third-party information from local attractions.

That enables them to learn more about their users over a period of time. With that data, they can provide users with more personalized suggestions and recommendations; consequently enhancing their destination experiences and driving sales.

That’s the reason why Booking.com doesn’t really advertise their Experiences offering (Experiences is not available on the main Booking.com site). Users only see it when they book a hotel in a city where Booking.com Experiences is available. Even then, the links to Experiences are relatively hidden. Why?

Because they aren’t really worried about traffic to their Experiences category. They have 1.5 million bookings per day on average. That’s a big audience to run a controlled experiment with, and here’s how it works.

Since a user will be staying in a specific hotel, in a specific location and on specific dates, Booking.com can provide a targeted Experiences offering to individual travelers. They can then better understand what appeals to a traveler and what doesn’t.

Papatla said, “We are starting with great demand, with a great dataset as we figure out how we can remove friction from consumers to help them enjoy and experience the world more.”

Booking.com is also learning about booking behaviors. For example, how families and solo travelers are booking experiences; the difference in booking behaviors of people on short trips versus those on longer trips; and how limited supply drives early bookings.

Their ultimate goal is to use data and technology to facilitate seamless bookings, and to enable customers to plan their itineraries without needing to check their phones constantly (which takes away from an experience).

Papatla states that they “want people to enjoy the world and want people to not have to look at their phones while they’re doing that. We would love our customers to never to have to stand in line. The phone will buzz and inform them at the right time what the next thing to do is. We don’t just want to sell tickets.”

Booking.com is really on a mission to enable tourists to plan their entire trip on a single platform.

Tour and activity providers with online offerings also have local tour offices where customers can book from when in the destination. However, when they are not online, it’s hard for customers to decide which tour operator to go with.

Travelers usually prefer online platforms as they have quality control measures like reviews and instant messaging for customers to file complaints on. Some platforms also employ secret tourists to test tours for quality control.

booking experiences top things to do in amsterdam reviews

However, as it stands, about 80 percent of experiences  are booked offline, via phone, travel agencies, hotel concierges, etc.

On the other hand, the amount of money spent by travelers on tours and activities has grown 21 percent since 2014 to $159 billion . Companies like Booking.com, Airbnb and TripAdvisor are all trying to get customers to buy more of them online, via their platforms.

And it’s working. TripAdvisor reported that tour and activity bookings are its fastest-growing revenue stream, accounting for about 50 percent of their non-hotel revenue ($360 million) in 2017. This tells us that there is an increasing number of travelers booking their tours and activities online.

The advantage with offering your tours and activities on Booking.com, in particular, is the sheer size of the tourism market they control. With the addition of their Experiences category, the platform has become a place where tour and activity providers, like yourself, can provide travel experiences that customers want in this day and age. And  in higher volume.

Furthermore, their platform is open to all travelers — both international and local. That’s right, they previously only offered Experiences to travelers who booked hotels in destinations where Experiences are available.

They decided to separate Experiences from hotel bookings earlier this year so that tours can also be accessed by locals or people who book their accommodation via another site like Airbnb. That’s a big market opportunity that you can take advantage of as a tour and activity provider.

Additionally, unlike Airbnb Experiences, Booking.com is focused on offering mainstream attractions rather than unique tours and activities.

Want to get your tour or activity listed on Booking Experiences? While it’s not available everywhere yet, you can join if you’re based in certain cities like Berlin, Paris or Amsterdam. There are two main ways to do this:

  • Check with your booking software provider in case they offer Booking.com as a sales channel.
  • Contact Booking.com directly and ask to talk to a Market Manager.

The commission fees for Booking.com Experiences is not readily available to the public. Their commission fees vary by country so you would need to list your offerings with them to find out the exact amount of commissions you would pay.

What we do know is that the company works with a commision-based model  which ranges from 10% to 25% depending on your location.

Oh, and if you’re worried about uniform cancellation policies, they vary by vendor guidelines; meaning, you get to set your own cancellation policy.

Similar (well, almost similar ) to Airbnb Experiences and GetYourGuide , Booking.com Experiences is a good way to widen your distribution channels, get your brand in front of more eyes and increase your bookings.

We all understand that, in this space, there are lots of things you need to do and invest in, in order to sell A LOT of tours and activities. Listing your offerings on platforms like Booking.com Experiences makes that effort a lot easier. Especially if you don’t have a solid online presence and want to reach more international and millennial travelers.

Take a dip and let us know how it goes!

Booking.com Pilots a

New, Smarter, Mobile-Based In-Destination Experience

With the newly launched ‘Booking Experiences’ your smartphone will soon be all you need for a highly curated, frictionless experience wherever your travels take you

LONDON, UK – July 13, 2016 – So you’ve found the perfect destination and booked an amazing place to stay…but what do you do while you’re there? Today Booking.com, the global leader in connecting travellers with the widest choice of incredible places to stay, announced the pilot release of its new Booking Experiences product. The ultimate technology response to take the friction out of the in-destination experience, Booking Experiences will allow travellers to discover the best a destination has to offer, all through a mobile device. Booking Experiences is a first-of-its-kind, highly curated, mobile-led experience that will ultimately harness Artificial Intelligence technology and powerful machine-learning to predict individual traveller intent and create a truly convenient, personalised in-destination experience—all on demand, with hassle-free payment and priority queueing. Booking Experiences is available today on both the Android and iOS versions of the Booking.com app for Amsterdam. The pilot launches for Booking Experiences Paris, London and Dubai are set to go live at the end of this month, with New York city set to go live in the autumn of 2016.

Unlike other experience-seeking tools, Booking Experiences is managed entirely within the Booking.com app without having to rely on or redirect to 3 rd -party websites. Once travellers have booked a stay in one of the first cities to offer Booking Experiences, via a single QR code in the Booking.com app a traveller can get instant booking access to all of the participating venues and attractions in that destination. Booking Experiences eliminates the need to book in advance or wait in lines to buy tickets— simply show up to the attraction you’re interested in, scan the code from your smartphone and enjoy. The QR code is automatically linked to your credit card of choice.

Travellers can view the full list of available things to do and visit for their destination in advance and/or simply explore on the go once they arrive. Booking Experiences provides the ultimate in flexibility and convenience, as travellers only pay for those experiences they choose to take advantage of, with the freedom to decide on the go and the peace of mind knowing that there’s always a spot reserved.

Booking.com has leveraged insights from its millions of travellers about what they liked (and didn’t like) about various destinations and the experiences they had there. Combining this endorsement data with a customer’s previous travel preferences, where that person is at the moment in a specific destination, as well as third-party data like the current waiting time at the most popular museum, the Booking Experiences technology will eventually learn over time to provide a traveller with increasingly personalized, relevant and timely suggestions to personalize the in-destination experience.

“With Booking Experiences, our passion for data-driven insights, our deep knowledge of travel and our ambition to smartly infuse Artificial Intelligence technology into our product are all coming together to create a new, uniquely mobile travel experience that’s curated, seamless and personal,” said David Vismans, Chief Product Officer at Booking.com. “The technology behind Booking Experiences will continuously learn from your travel preferences, as well as other travellers like you, to eventually present you with increasingly curated options that are just right for you. Our ultimate goal is to keep you inspired, regardless of whether it’s your first—or fifth time visiting a particular location.”

5 Ways To Humanize The Travel Booking Experiences

Ask most millennials, and they’ll tell you they value experiences over possessions.

78% would rather pack their bags and go on an adventure than buy material goods, and it’s changing the way the travel industry interacts with its customers.

travel booking experience

Back in the day, you could rock up at a travel agent and have your trip booked in half an hour.

Today people want to personalize their travel, making sure they have the perfect accommodation, transport, and on-site experiences. Travelers are increasingly putting together the working parts of a trip themselves thanks to the rise in mobile.

The surge of activity on handheld devices helps users travel light and, on the other side of the coin, gives travel brands the chance to reach their people wherever they are in the world.

And hey, this leads to stronger customer retention and ROI – but only for brands that get it right.

Real-Time, In-Person Experiences Are Changing Travel

Unlike the old days when you’d go into a black void of no internet or signal when you traveled, today things are very different.

Travel sparks social media updates from people who barely log on, and people start checking-in to locations, taking selfies against beautiful backdrops, and continuously posting status updates.

travel booking experience

There’s no doubt about it: social media has changed the way people travel and it’s forced the travel industry to create deeper connections with their customers and come up with new ways to stand out and increase their revenue.

And it’s time to play the long game.

As well as diving into the world of mobile marketing, brands need to go beyond the once transactional process of travel booking and start building relationships – something that’s become much easier to do now that people take their mobiles everywhere .

How Travelers Are Booking Their Trips Now

This new mobile-led landscape has not only changed the way people travel, but it’s also changed how they book their trips.

travel booking experience

Today, 31% of people traveling for leisure and 53% of people traveling for business say they booked on their smartphone.

But it’s important to not focus solely on mobile.

Instead, brands need to develop a cross-platform approach that ties into their user’s needs.

For example, 94% of leisure travelers switch between devices when booking , many of whom carry out research on their mobile before taking the plunge and booking on their laptop or desktop.

Okay, So What Does This Mean For Travel Brands?

This shift in booking preferences and the behavior of travelers means brands are increasingly required to provide value and, more importantly, engage with their users in a more consistent way.

It’s not enough to make a sale and disappear off the face of the earth.

People expect travel companies to interact with them after the booking process – which also leads to repeat custom if you do it well.

So, to break it down, the booking process now needs to be broken up into four main areas:

  • A strong engagement strategy that attracts customers in the first place
  • Thoughtful onboarding that keeps customers around after they’ve booked
  • Relevant messaging to build relationships and stand out amongst the millions of competitors that crop up every week
  • Innovative cross-channel approaches that can reach potential customers wherever they are in the world to keep providing value

And, though modern marketing is still heavily led by analytics and ROI, there is a new landscape unfolding; one where brands are beginning to identify those all-important micro-moments in the booking journey that compel customers to move forward.

This means creativity – and lots of it.

Let’s dive in.

1. Sharing is Caring – Especially When it Comes to Travel Plans

Airbnb, one of the biggest travel brands to explode onto the scene in recent years, works under the whole “sharing is caring” policy.

travel booking experience

The company pairs people with space in their homes to travelers looking for a place to stay. It’s the alternative to hotels, and it prides itself on matching people up in a human way.

But it’s not just this whole bringing people together that humanizes the booking experience for Airbnb, there’s also a number of social elements whirring away to help travelers coordinate trips with friends and families.

These tactics include:

  • Location-specific content that means users can explore local events and share them
  • The ability to split the costs between a group, saving those awkward money chats when traveling with others
  • Local experiences that are personalized for each and every user depending on their past behavior on the site

2. Push Notifications for Personalized Experiences

Personalization is huge in the marketing world at the moment – and for good reason.

travel booking experience

Consumers are tired of being blanket marketed to. They crave connections instead, and want to feel valued by the brands they buy from.

Low-fare finding brand Hopper gets this down to a T.

Users choose the dates they want to travel and the routes they’re thinking of traveling, and the app sends them push notifications when prices are at their lowest.

travel booking experience

This lets users act quickly, and takes the time and energy out of constantly refreshing flight prices to see if they drop.

On the flipside, there are brands like Tripit that are powering personalization in different ways.

Remember earlier when we said people are putting together their own trips rather than heading to a travel agent? Tripit acts as a hub for bringing everything together by offering a hold-all for confirmation emails, tickets, and itinerary information.

travel booking experience

With so many working parts of a trip, it allows users to build up their trip in a concise and organized way, creating a hyper-relevant and personalized user experience.

3. User Generated Content and Recommendations

97% of millennials post photos and videos of their travels on social media , which means travel brands have access to a mammoth amount of content created by the very people who can sell their business best – their customers .

This, compared with the rise in popularity of third-party recommendation sites, means the internet is now a visual and commentary hub of influential, inspirational content.

This influx of social sharing has no doubt led to the genuine importance of online reviews, with 59% of US travelers now using sites such as Tripadvisor as an authentic source for booking their trips.

Let’s take a look at this in action.

Loews Hotels noted this trend and stepped up to the mark. Using the #TravelForReal hashtag, they gathered hundreds of pieces of user generated content and, with the help of TINT, displayed it throughout the various different stages of the customer buying journey.

The campaign led to a 35% increase in bookings .

“To be a successful brand in this day and age, it’s important to have an authentic presence on all of your communications,” says Piper Stevens, the VP of Loyalty and Marketing at Loews Hotels.

In a similar vein, Hyatt Hotels have integrated user generated content to garner more engagement from their customers.

Their designated hashtag, #InAHyattWorld, began as a place for the brand to highlight its values, but it soon became a go-to place for travelers to post images and content about their own trips at the hotel chain.

travel booking experience

Overall, more than 89,000 Instagram images were uploaded by guests throughout the campaign, many of which were displayed on a microsite. This helped the brand build trust with existing customers while expanding their reach.

4. Using Travel Influencers to Inspire

Influencer marketing is on the rise, and it’s no surprise that the travel industry is getting involved too.

More and more companies are tapping into partnerships with key names in the travel industry to increase brand awareness and drive revenue.

travel booking experience

Take the Hawaiian Tourism Board, for example.

They wanted to inject a hearty dose of authenticity into their brand and decided to partner with top influencers in the travel industry on Instagram.

The hashtag, #LetHawaiiHappen, allowed these influencers to highlight different parts of traveling the country, including off-the-beaten-path experiences and hidden hotspots. The brand collaborated with Jordan Hershall and Forster Hunting, two of the most adventurous travelers on Instagram.

travel booking experience

Customer service is incredibly important.

Remember the United Airlines incident where a doctor got thrown off a flight? That’s a great example of terrible customer service, and the shockwaves of the event are still having detrimental effects on the brand.

But, with the rise of mobile activity, it’s not only important for brands to provide good customer service, they also need to provide it in ways that the consumer wants.

Today, more people than ever before are communicating with brands through different channels – most prominently, social media channels.

In fact, 53% of customers who ask a brand a question on Twitter expect an answer in less than an hour . This rockets up to 72% if it’s a complaint.

travel booking experience

So now customer service isn’t just confined to call centers, it’s permeating brands from the inside out, where complaints and questions are more visible than ever.

This means social media monitoring needs to be a proactive task.

At the #PSEWEB conference at Delta Hotels, a customer Tweeted his disappointment about the view from his room. In response, Delta Hotels offered him a new room within the hour.

Not only did this showcase that Delta Hotels were on the ball and valued their customer experiences, but it led to the guest writing a blog post about his encounter which led to even more positive publicity for the brand.

travel booking experience

Now, more than ever, customer service is becoming part of the promotional booking process.

To Humanize is to Connect and Convert

With so many new, innovative travel brands popping up every day, it’s vital that companies stand out and stay creative.

Not only do campaigns need to center around the customer, but it’s important to implement strategies that take the booking process away from the simple transactional activity it used to be and move it towards the connective, relationship building activity that consumers today are looking for.

By tapping into the power of people from the outside, like influencers and their own customers, as well as providing more personalized experiences and a more integrated customer service strategy, brands are building deeper levels of trust with their customers who, in turn, keep coming back for more.

The best way to find authentic experiences is to look for recommendations from other people, whether they’re locals or tourists who have stumbled upon hidden gems. Reviews can really make or break your travel plans. The best travel booking apps will definitely have you covered with experienced travelers’ tips and recommendations.

4. They have a translation function.

When you’re traveling between countries, it can be helpful to have a translation function on your travel apps, so you don’t have to switch between apps to get what you’re looking for. With a translation option, you can move about without language barriers, making travel easy even if you don’t speak the native tongue.

5. They have social media integration.

As simple as it sounds, the time it takes to sign up and register for a new app can be a deciding factor for many. In a world where we want information at our fingertips, it can be a turn off when it takes too much time to create a profile before you can use an app.

The best travel booking apps allow you to link your social media accounts—not only for easy access, but so you can share the highlights of your trip directly to your social accounts!

The 31 Best Airbnb Online Experiences [Ultimate Guide]

What Are Airbnb Online Experiences?

Hosting a private group activity, how are airbnb online experiences priced, how to book airbnb online experiences, communicate limitations, changing your experience, refunds for your experience, cooking online experiences, coffee, wine, and cocktail online experiences, virtual tours, diy online experiences, active online experiences, creative online experiences, quirky online experiences, final thoughts.

We may be compensated when you click on product links, such as credit cards, from one or more of our advertising partners. Terms apply to the offers below. See our Advertising Policy for more about our partners, how we make money, and our rating methodology. Opinions and recommendations are ours alone.

While Airbnb has been offering in-person Experiences, it recently expanded these Experiences to make many of them virtual due to the COVID-19 pandemic. For times when travel isn’t an option and we are desperately craving some cultural immersion, Airbnb Online Experiences are a great fit! They include a mix of hosted classes, cooking demonstrations, tours, and more.

We’ve taken a look at all of the offerings and gathered together our favorites to help you sort through the steadily-increasing variety of activities. From learning to cook traditional Spanish paella to getting a personalized tour of Paris with a local, these are some of the best ways you can travel from home with Airbnb Online Experiences.

While Airbnb started as a platform for travelers to find and book rooms and homes around the world, back in 2017, it expanded its offerings to include bookable Experiences across the globe. These Experiences “offer a deep-dive into the local host’s world through their passion.” It notes that the most successful Experiences “offer a unique take on an activity or locale that is special to the host’s city.”

Due to COVID-19, Airbnb moved these Experiences online. The online activities are still local-led, expert-driven experts, but now they take place virtually through Zoom, a third-party cloud platform for video conferencing that you access via your desktop computer, tablet, or mobile device.

Most experiences are group activities, where you’ll be joined by others on Zoom who might be located anywhere around the globe. Or, you can choose to pay a little extra to book a private Experience for just you and some friends and family.

Airbnb Online Experiences are purchased and booked on the same portal where you book accommodations, and a Zoom link to join is provided for the appropriate day and time as soon as your payment is processed.

How to Search for Airbnb Online Experiences

You can use the Airbnb website or mobile app to book an Online Experience. The individual host sets Experience availability — it is not simply available on demand.

  • On the Airbnb home page , click on the “Online Experiences” tab
  • Click “Dates” and enter your date (or if you are flexible, you can do this later)
  • Click “Guests” and enter the number of guests

The other option is to simply browse through all available Experiences.

Airbnb Online Experiences

Make sure to review all requirements specified by the host. Also, be sure to look closely at the “What’s Included” or “What I’ll Provide” sections of the Experience page to see more details about what to expect for each Experience.

Hot Tip: You don’t need to have a home booked on Airbnb in order to book an Experience.

If you’d like to virtually gather a group of friends or family, private groups may be a good option. Whether a host offers private groups is at the host’s discretion.

There are 3 ways to search for a group activity:

  • When you find an Experience you are interested in, you can message the host to inquire if they can host your group privately
  • You can click the “See Dates” button to check if “Book for a private group” is an option for a specific date
  • Simply book all available spots for a specific date/time, if available

You will receive a link to the Zoom meeting that you will need to forward along to all attendees.

Airbnb Online Experiences are priced depending on how involved the activity is and who the local or expert is, but are very reasonable with an average cost of $22. Also, Experiences are priced per person by default, so the price to book a group will be more expensive.

For example, you can learn to make homemade Italian pasta for only $7 per person, or watch as you have a pair of shoes custom-made for you for $74 per person (including shipping). Have a private workout session for $70 per session, or even book a cooking class and make Spanish paella with just your friends and family for $300 for the group.

Generally, you should book a spot for each person joining the Experience, but sometimes a host is open to multiple guests joining per device. If this is the case, this will be noted on their Experience page under “What You’ll Do” or “How to Participate.”

Once you find an Online Experience you are interested in booking, click on the date and time of your choosing. Be sure to note any cancellation policies on this screen as well.

The Airbnb website will guide you through your payment options and help you finalize your booking. Payment options vary by country, but generally, the following options are available:

  • Most major credit cards and prepaid credit cards (Visa, MasterCard, Amex, Discover, JCB) as well as many debit cards that can be processed as credit
  • Airbnb gift cards (in the U.S. only)

For more information, see the Airbnb payment page .

Bottom Line: There is no limit to how many Experiences you can book!

How Do I Prepare for Airbnb Online Experiences?

You can check the “How to Participate” and “Guest Requirements” sections of the Experience page to find out what you need to prepare before attending. This information can also be found in your booking confirmation email.

Examples of common requirements include an internet connection and a list of materials, food, or other items to purchase or prepare in advance.

Hot Tip: You can always find the necessary details in your reservation information found on your Airbnb “Trips” page.

If you have a food allergy or special dietary restrictions, be sure to disclose them to your hosts beforehand so you can discuss if or how their menu can be altered for you.

Along the same lines, if you have any physical limitations that might impact your Experience, communicate this in advance so that accommodations can be made.

If you use a desktop to access Zoom, you can either join from your browser or download the Zoom app . If you’re using a cell phone, you’ll need to download the Zoom app ( iOS , Android ).

Bottom Line: You don’t need to sign up for a Zoom account to attend your Online Experience.

Make sure you have the correct link for your online Experience. This will have been emailed to you when you booked.

Video Credit: Airbnb

If the link isn’t working, close Zoom and try the link again. If it’s still not working, message your host to confirm whether they are having issues with Zoom. In addition, if Zoom is asking you for a password, message your host through Airbnb to ask for the password.

How Do I Change or Cancel Airbnb Online Experiences?

Plans change, but the good news is that Airbnb Online Experiences are pretty flexible!

To change or cancel a reservation, go to “Trips” in your Airbnb account or from your reservation confirmation email. Once you locate your trip, how you change or cancel depends on your method:

  • In the Airbnb app, tap “Manage reservation”
  • From your confirmation email, select “Change or cancel reservation”
  • In your Airbnb account, select “Modify reservation”

You can make a change to your Airbnb Online Experience up to 72 hours before it begins.

To request a request:

  • Click the “Contact host” button on the host’s Experience page
  • Choose between asking a question or requesting availability for dates and times
  • Choose the new date, time, and number of guests
  • Review your request
  • Click “Send request”

The host can review the reservation details and accept or deny your request. If they confirm, you’ll be prompted to complete the booking through a message in your inbox. You may be prompted to pay any difference in pricing, if applicable.

If your request is denied, you can work with the host to find a different time that works better for their schedule.

Canceling Your Experience

You can cancel up to 7 days before the start time or within 24 hours of booking.

You should receive your full refund within 10 days.

In addition, per Airbnb , “guests are eligible for a full refund for your Airbnb Online Experience if there are any technical difficulties, such as audio or video issues, that occur either due to their own device or the host’s device during an online experience.”

For the full refund policy, be sure to check Airbnb’s website .

This is also a great way to support hosts whose “regular” jobs in the tourism industry might have taken a hit during the pandemic. While these Airbnb Online Experiences started as a result of COVID-19, we hope we’ll see these continue long after travel returns to normal.

And finally, a review

After their trip, guests tell us about their stay. We check for naughty words and verify the authenticity of all guest reviews before adding them to our site.

It's not too late to book summer travel deals, these expert tips make it easier

VIDEO: Why this week is best time to find deals on summer travel hot spots

For anyone still in planning mode for summer vacation , some experts say right now may be the best time to book the trip.

Founder of The Points Guy Brian Kelly explained to "GMA" that the best booking timeframe, known as the goldilocks window, can offer travelers serious savings.

"When traveling internationally, you wanna book at least 60 days in advance and domestic, the sweet spot is usually 45 days," he said.

While airlines are already bracing for record travel this summer, Kelly said to go with the deals rather than the specific destination.

"Demand for travel is strong, especially intergenerational travel," he said. "I recommend -- choose the destination where the deals are so you can spend less on airfare and hotels and spend more at your destination."

Whether you prefer road trips or all-inclusive resorts or cruises, travel experts are seeing deals across the board if you know where to look.

"We've seen great airfares this summer to Hawaii -- JFK to Honolulu we're seeing in the $400 [range] which is 40% below historical prices."

International hotspots this summer like Europe for example, has airfare that's 10% less on average than the same time last year, according to travel booking site Hopper. The average summer airfare, Hopper found, is $325 domestically and $1,000 internationally.

Hot summer airfare deals this week

Boston to Barcelona can be booked for as low as $493 round trip.

Chicago to Paris has airfare as low as $571 round trip.

And Kelly reminded that the key to getting the best deal is knowing how and where to save.

"There's not one day of the week where cheap fares magically appear. If you travel on Tuesdays and Saturdays in general, those days are cheaper than flying on a Thursday, Friday or Sunday," he said.

Golden rule for booking flights: Advanced purchase requirement

Travel expert Scott Keyes of Going.com and formerly Scott's Cheap Flights, regularly reminds people to follow his golden rule of air travel : back-timing when to book based on your departure date, in order to align with an airline's "advanced purchase requirement" found in the fine print of the fare terms and conditions.

"Pull up a calendar and circle 21 days before your travel date," he said. "That needs to be your sort of drop-dead date to get your flights booked by."

7 of the best all-inclusive experiences to book this year, from a travel planner

  • As a travel planner, my clients seem to be increasingly interested in all-inclusive trips .
  • Some of my favorite luxury resorts are in Costa Rica, the Maldives, and Isla Mujeres.
  • Cruises, group tours, and adults-only lodgings can also come with all-inclusive options.

Insider Today

As a travel planner at Marvelous Mouse Travels , I know vacations are expensive — especially if you're looking to go somewhere this summer . But all-inclusive travel is often a great way to get the most value out of a luxury experience.

I've been on several all-inclusive vacations with my family, friends, and work, and I've helped other people book them in destinations around the world .

Here are some of the best all-inclusive experiences I'm recommending to my clients this year.

Try a split-stay vacation to see the best of Costa Rica.

travel booking experience

Costa Rica is one of the most sought-after vacations , and for good reason. It's great for both relaxation and adventure.

I recommend booking a split stay, starting at an all-inclusive resort in Guanacaste near the beach for some fun in the sun and moving to a resort near the famous Arenal Volcano for a jungle adventure.

Some of my favorite resorts in Costa Rica are the Westin Reserva Conchal and the Dreams Las Mareas. And if you're looking for an even more unique experience, check out the glorious swim-out suites with private pools at Dreams.

Baglioni Maldives is one of my favorite all-inclusive resorts.

travel booking experience

The Maldives, a remote set of islands in the Indian Ocean, offers a plethora of resort options for couples and families, but Baglioni Maldives is my favorite.

For many in the US, getting to the islands can be daunting — there are very few direct commercial flights, and it can take almost an entire day. But it's hard to beat the country's luxury accommodations and gorgeous landscape.

The Maldives also has some of the most beautiful marine life and coveted spots for snorkeling and scuba diving.

No matter where you go, overwater bungalows are the ultimate all-inclusive splurge.

travel booking experience

Overwater bungalows — villas standing on poles over open ocean water — are prevalent at all-inclusive resorts in destinations like the Maldives, Fiji, and Bali.

But I've also come across the luxurious accommodations at select adults-only Sandals Resorts throughout the Caribbean.

I think having a private villa on the water is the perfect way to unwind and relax.

Adults-only vacations are on the rise.

travel booking experience

Traveling with kids can be a blast, but I also think it's important for adults to take a much-needed break on their own.

Adults-only resorts have been a total respite for me and my husband after hectic months of juggling work with our kids' school and sports schedules.

If you're looking to unwind with a partner, relax on a girls' trip, or even connect with your adult children, there are countless adults-only, all-inclusive resorts to choose from, depending on where you're looking to visit.

Some properties, including Sandals and Beaches Resorts, also offer butler service. Designated staff members can help with anything from room requests and dining reservations to cabana rentals and transportation coordination.

I upgraded to the service at my favorite adults-only spot, Le Blanc Los Cabos, and I felt totally pampered.

Isla Mujeres is pure luxury.

travel booking experience

Isla Mujeres, a small island off the coast of Cancún, is known for its crystal-clear, turquoise water and peaceful vibe. It's also home to Playa Norte, one of the best beaches in Mexico .

Impressions Isla Mujeres by Secrets is a gorgeous all-inclusive resort on the island. It offers luxury at its finest, but with only 125 rooms, it has a boutique feel.

One of my favorite features of the resort is the waterslide that leads right into the beautiful ocean.

There are plenty of all-inclusive packages at sea.

travel booking experience

Cruising is one of the most popular vacations , whether it's an epic adventure on a Royal Caribbean Cruise, a couples-only journey on Virgin Voyages, or a regal tour of Europe on Viking River Cruises.

Although cruises aren't traditionally considered all-inclusive, with the right booking, they can have the same feel as a luxury resort.

Most cruise bookings include food, nonalcoholic drinks, and live entertainment. If you add beverage packages and excursions in advance, your trip should be fully paid for before you depart.

Book a small-group or private tour if you're looking for adventure.

travel booking experience

Group travel is a great way to explore new places while soaking up culture and history.

Popular destinations include Italy, Japan, Costa Rica, and Alaska, and many travel companies take care of everything for you, essentially making it all-inclusive.

I like Adventures by Disney , which offers small-group travel all over the world facilitated by seasoned guides. All the trip details are taken care of, including experiences, food, lodging, and transportation.

Additionally, Kensington Tours offers luxury private travel where every facet of the trip is meticulously planned for you.

11 Mistakes Travelers Often Make When Booking Cruises, According to Travel Advisors

B ooking a cruise may seem straightforward enough—pick a location, find a ship, pay your deposit and start packing. But, in reality, it can be one of the most confusing travel experiences to navigate on your own.

From selecting a cabin to getting a good deal, there’s a lot to consider when planning out your dream vacation on the water. These are some of the biggest mistakes travelers often make when booking cruises on their own—and how a travel advisor can help.

Thinking All Cruises Are the Same

Big ships versus small ships. River, ocean or expedition. Luxurious or laid-back. Educational or just for fun. These days, there’s a cruise for just about everyone under the sun—and then some.

But a big mistake travelers often make is assuming that all cruises are the same, says Michele Lindsay, the owner and lead travel advisor at Blue Pointe Travel . This often leads to a major mismatch: If you’re looking for a calm, relaxing vacation and you end up on a cruise with a party-like atmosphere, you’ll probably be pretty unhappy.

A travel advisor can help you choose the perfect cruise, based on your likes and dislikes, as well as your goals for each specific trip. During her discovery calls with clients, for instance, Lindsay likes to ask about their food preferences, what kinds of activities and entertainment they enjoy, who they’ll be traveling with and how they’d like to spend their time on vacation.

“Cruise lines each have their own distinct personality,” she says. “Rushing to book a cabin on a cruise line based on an Instagram reel without doing your due diligence first could land you on a ship where it's not your ideal fit.”

Putting Too Much—or Too Little—Emphasis on the Ship

Travelers also often end up putting too much or too little emphasis on the ship. The vessel’s amenities are absolutely important to the overall cruise experience, but it all really boils down to the itinerary. During excursion-heavy trips, you may not have any free time to explore the ship, whereas on longer journeys with more sea days, the opposite is true.

“Families often make this mistake, in particular, when they are searching for that bucket-list cruise to Alaska or the Mediterranean,” says Lindsay. “They prioritize a kid-friendly ship over time in port, or they don’t realize that on a seven-day Mediterranean cruise, there might only be one day at sea, so the ship's amenities—like water slides —may not be as important as they would be on a winter getaway to the Bahamas or the Caribbean.”

On the flip side, some travelers get so excited about where a ship is taking them that they forget how much there is to do onboard, says Lori Stephens, founder and chief executive officer of Sojourney Travel . The key is talking with your travel advisor to understand the ins and outs of your particular trip.

“While the destinations of a cruise are undoubtedly highlights, they are far from the entirety of the trip,” says Stephens. “It is essential to look at your cruise app to see what activities are offered on board so that you can plan accordingly.”

Overpacking For The Trip

And speaking of planning, travelers also have a tendency to bring way too many clothes for the journey, Stephens says. She recommends taking advantage of onboard laundry rooms or laundering services to help keep packing to a minimum.

“Consider repurposing dress pants for multiple nights, reusing swimsuits and cover-ups and limiting shoes to a few pairs that can be used with various outfits,” she says.

Also, remember: Your airline has a weight limit for suitcases, and the more space you leave empty, the more souvenirs you can bring home, adds Windy Dockum , an independent agent for Love of the Magic Vacations.

“Cruisers always feel the need to take all these clothes with them on this trip but, in reality, they’re only going to wear half of them,” says Dockum.

Showing Up the Day of the Cruise

Another big misstep? Arriving in the embarkation city the same day the ship departs. Even a small mishap—a flight delay, a traffic jam, car troubles or some other hiccup—can throw off your entire timeline, meaning the ship might just leave without you on it.

Stephens recommends arriving well ahead of boarding time, if possible. Coming a day or two early also gives travelers a chance to adjust to new time zones if necessary, and spend some time exploring the embarkation destination.

“It is always important to expect the unexpected when planning for a cruise,” she says. “Choosing to arrive early gives you a lazy start to your first cruise day, allowing for a slow and stress-free wake-up and an excellent local restaurant for breakfast—ask your travel advisor for recommendations.”

Not Taking Advantage of In-App Offerings

As soon as you put down your deposit, download the cruise line’s mobile app on your phone. Check it regularly for in-app discounts on excursions, drink packages and WiFi, says Stephens. This is an easy, money-saving step that many travelers simply overlook.

The app can also help you in other ways, such as making dinner reservations or checking out the onboard entertainment lineup. Some cruise lines will even allow you to pre-book shows and kids’ club reservations.

“Utilizing a cruise line’s app ensures that you can customize your sailing to your liking and get first pick at excursions and activities with limited availability—all while securing discounts for booking in advance,” says Stephens.

Assuming That Booking Last-Minute Will Get You The Best Deal

Many clients assume that waiting until the last minute to book a cruise will get them the best possible deal. Not so, says Jesse Morris, owner of We Book Travel LLC , an independent agency in the Avoya Travel Network.

“This may have been true at one point, but cruise lines have made inventory management into a science and it is extremely rare in the post-Covid world to see big price drops anymore,” he says. “The best time to book is as early as possible to ensure you get the cabin you want and the lowest possible price.”

Many cruise lines also offer price-drop protections, so if affordability is your top priority, consider booking with one of those lines, he adds.

Not Buying Travel Insurance

New and seasoned cruisers alike often opt-out of travel insurance , but Dockum says this is a big mistake. Hopefully, you won’t need it—but if you do, you’ll be glad to have it.

“Anything can happen while on vacation and it’s best to be prepared,” she says. “Travel insurance can cover things like lost luggage, missed connections and more serious problems like medical issues that could require medical evacuation.”

Overplanning Your Vacation

Reviewing shore excursions and onboard entertainment options can make you feel like a kid in a candy store. But many travelers have a tendency to overplan, says Dockum, which leaves little room for spontaneity or time to actually relax.

“Many cruisers try to do all the things and it’s just not possible,” she says. “Don't overdo it, or you’ll end up needing a vacation from your vacation. Take some downtime—you can’t do everything.

Waiting Too Long to Book Excursions

That said, if there are certain excursions you have your heart set on, don’t wait until the last minute to book them, says Dockum.

“I don’t know how many times I’ve heard, ‘But it’s sold out?’” she says. “You booked a once-in -a-lifetime trip, don’t miss out on that once-in-a-lifetime excursion. Book excursions as soon as you can—that way, you get what you want at the time you want.”

Misunderstanding ‘Guaranteed’ Rooms

If you’re cruising on a budget, you might be tempted to book what’s known as a “guaranteed” room to save a little extra cash. These staterooms are typically cheaper because the cruise line will assign you one randomly based on availability—you don’t get to pick your own.

But not all cabins are created equal—and you might end up in a part of the ship that ruins your vacation, says Dockum.

“If you are a light sleeper, you could be placed above a nightclub or dining room and hear noise all night long,” she says. “If you are susceptible to motion sickness, you could be placed in the forward or aft of the ship where you will feel the most movement. It’s best to spend the extra money and pick your cabin location.”

In addition, the name of these staterooms is misleading, because you’re not really guaranteed anything. If the cruise line oversells a voyage, they might have to bump passengers—and guaranteed rooms are some of the first to get the boot, says Stephens.

“No one wants to have to cancel plans at the last minute,” she says. “Go ahead and get an assigned stateroom at the time of booking. It's not worth the savings, many times, and it's better to be safe than sorry.”

On top of all that, ultra-low fare categories often don’t include onboard credits, drink packages or other add-ons. If you want any of these perks, you may actually end up spending more than if you’d booked another rate category that, on the surface, seems more expensive. Your travel advisor can help you do the math and ensure you’re getting everything you want out of your cruise experience at the best price.

“Travel advisors are experts in navigating the promotion mazes and can help clients determine what will get them the most for their money,” says Morris. “We can help clients avoid taking a dream vacation to nightmare scenario easily.”

Waiting Too Long to Book Your Next Cruise

Cruising is wildly popular right now and, even with new ships coming online all the time, there’s still a finite number of berths available, says Lindsay. If you wait too long to book your next trip, you may have to make some compromises.

“Everybody wants that perfect mid-ship balcony, but if you wait too long to book, you may be left with an interior cabin without any views—or, speaking from experience, so far forward that your cabin shakes every time the anchors are dropped,” she says.

If there’s a specific ship you can’t wait to experience or a particular cabin category that’s ideal for your group, get a jump start on booking ASAP. Connecting cabins, in particular, tend to sell out quickly, says Lindsay, so if you’re traveling as a family and you know you’ll need multiple staterooms together, then don’t wait.

“I encourage my clients to look ahead a year or two for school breaks and holidays, as those are the most popular times to sail,” she adds. “Booking early also means that my clients benefit from group space pricing and incentives that are typically available six to 10 months out from sailing.”

Travel Itinerary For One Week in Moscow: The Best of Moscow!

I just got back from one week in Moscow. And, as you might have already guessed, it was a mind-boggling experience. It was not my first trip to the Russian capital. But I hardly ever got enough time to explore this sprawling city. Visiting places for business rarely leaves enough time for sightseeing. I think that if you’ve got one week in Russia, you can also consider splitting your time between its largest cities (i.e. Saint Petersburg ) to get the most out of your trip. Seven days will let you see the majority of the main sights and go beyond just scratching the surface. In this post, I’m going to share with you my idea of the perfect travel itinerary for one week in Moscow.

Moscow is perhaps both the business and cultural hub of Russia. There is a lot more to see here than just the Kremlin and Saint Basil’s Cathedral. Centuries-old churches with onion-shaped domes dotted around the city are in stark contrast with newly completed impressive skyscrapers of Moscow City dominating the skyline. I spent a lot of time thinking about my Moscow itinerary before I left. And this city lived up to all of my expectations.

7-day Moscow itinerary

Travel Itinerary For One Week in Moscow

Day 1 – red square and the kremlin.

Metro Station: Okhotny Ryad on Red Line.

No trip to Moscow would be complete without seeing its main attraction. The Red Square is just a stone’s throw away from several metro stations. It is home to some of the most impressive architectural masterpieces in the city. The first thing you’ll probably notice after entering it and passing vendors selling weird fur hats is the fairytale-like looking Saint Basil’s Cathedral. It was built to commemorate one of the major victories of Ivan the Terrible. I once spent 20 minutes gazing at it, trying to find the perfect angle to snap it. It was easier said than done because of the hordes of locals and tourists.

As you continue strolling around Red Square, there’s no way you can miss Gum. It was widely known as the main department store during the Soviet Era. Now this large (yet historic) shopping mall is filled with expensive boutiques, pricey eateries, etc. During my trip to Moscow, I was on a tight budget. So I only took a retro-style stroll in Gum to get a rare glimpse of a place where Soviet leaders used to grocery shop and buy their stuff. In case you want some modern shopping experience, head to the Okhotny Ryad Shopping Center with stores like New Yorker, Zara, and Adidas.

To continue this Moscow itinerary, next you may want to go inside the Kremlin walls. This is the center of Russian political power and the president’s official residence. If you’re planning to pay Kremlin a visit do your best to visit Ivan the Great Bell Tower as well. Go there as early as possible to avoid crowds and get an incredible bird’s-eye view. There are a couple of museums that are available during designated visiting hours. Make sure to book your ticket online and avoid lines.

Day 2 – Cathedral of Christ the Saviour, the Tretyakov Gallery, and the Arbat Street

Metro Station: Kropotkinskaya on Red Line

As soon as you start creating a Moscow itinerary for your second day, you’ll discover that there are plenty of metro stations that are much closer to certain sites. Depending on your route, take a closer look at the metro map to pick the closest.

The white marble walls of Christ the Saviour Cathedral are awe-inspiring. As you approach this tallest Orthodox Christian church, you may notice the bronze sculptures, magnificent arches, and cupolas that were created to commemorate Russia’s victory against Napoleon.

travel itinerary for one week in Moscow

How to Get a Decent Haircut in a Foreign Country

Unfortunately, the current Cathedral is a replica, since original was blown to bits in 1931 by the Soviet government. The new cathedral basically follows the original design, but they have added some new elements such as marble high reliefs.

Home to some precious collection of artworks, in Tretyakov Gallery you can find more than 150,000 of works spanning centuries of artistic endeavor. Originally a privately owned gallery, it now has become one of the largest museums in Russia. The Gallery is often considered essential to visit. But I have encountered a lot of locals who have never been there.

Famous for its souvenirs, musicians, and theaters, Arbat street is among the few in Moscow that were turned into pedestrian zones. Arbat street is usually very busy with tourists and locals alike. My local friend once called it the oldest street in Moscow dating back to 1493. It is a kilometer long walking street filled with fancy gift shops, small cozy restaurants, lots of cute cafes, and street artists. It is closed to any vehicular traffic, so you can easily stroll it with kids.

Day 3 – Moscow River Boat Ride, Poklonnaya Hill Victory Park, the Moscow City

Metro Station: Kievskaya and Park Pobedy on Dark Blue Line / Vystavochnaya on Light Blue Line

Voyaging along the Moscow River is definitely one of the best ways to catch a glimpse of the city and see the attractions from a bit different perspective. Depending on your Moscow itinerary, travel budget and the time of the year, there are various types of boats available. In the summer there is no shortage of boats, and you’ll be spoiled for choice.

exploring Moscow

Travel Itinerary for One Week in Beijing

If you find yourself in Moscow during the winter months, I’d recommend going with Radisson boat cruise. These are often more expensive (yet comfy). They offer refreshments like tea, coffee, hot chocolate, and, of course, alcoholic drinks. Prices may vary but mostly depend on your food and drink selection. Find their main pier near the opulent Ukraine hotel . The hotel is one of the “Seven Sisters”, so if you’re into the charm of Stalinist architecture don’t miss a chance to stay there.

The area near Poklonnaya Hill has the closest relation to the country’s recent past. The memorial complex was completed in the mid-1990s to commemorate the Victory and WW2 casualties. Also known as the Great Patriotic War Museum, activities here include indoor attractions while the grounds around host an open-air museum with old tanks and other vehicles used on the battlefield.

How I Planned My Trip to Vietnam

The hallmark of the memorial complex and the first thing you see as you exit metro is the statue of Nike mounted to its column. This is a very impressive Obelisk with a statue of Saint George slaying the dragon at its base.

Maybe not as impressive as Shanghai’s Oriental Pearl Tower , the skyscrapers of the Moscow City (otherwise known as Moscow International Business Center) are so drastically different from dull Soviet architecture. With 239 meters and 60 floors, the Empire Tower is the seventh highest building in the business district.

The observation deck occupies 56 floor from where you have some panoramic views of the city. I loved the view in the direction of Moscow State University and Luzhniki stadium as well to the other side with residential quarters. The entrance fee is pricey, but if you’re want to get a bird’s eye view, the skyscraper is one of the best places for doing just that.

Day 4 – VDNKh, Worker and Collective Farm Woman Monument, The Ostankino TV Tower

Metro Station: VDNKh on Orange Line

VDNKh is one of my favorite attractions in Moscow. The weird abbreviation actually stands for Russian vystavka dostizheniy narodnogo khozyaystva (Exhibition of Achievements of the National Economy). With more than 200 buildings and 30 pavilions on the grounds, VDNKh serves as an open-air museum. You can easily spend a full day here since the park occupies a very large area.

Moscow sights

Places to Visit in Barcelona That Aren’t Beaches

First, there are pavilions that used to showcase different cultures the USSR was made of. Additionally, there is a number of shopping pavilions, as well as Moskvarium (an Oceanarium) that features a variety of marine species. VDNKh is a popular venue for events and fairs. There is always something going on, so I’d recommend checking their website if you want to see some particular exhibition.

A stone’s throw away from VDNKh there is a very distinctive 25-meters high monument. Originally built in 1937 for the world fair in Paris, the hulking figures of men and women holding a hammer and a sickle represent the Soviet idea of united workers and farmers. It doesn’t take much time to see the monument, but visiting it gives some idea of the Soviet Union’s grandiose aspirations.

I have a thing for tall buildings. So to continue my travel itinerary for one week in Moscow I decided to climb the fourth highest TV tower in the world. This iconic 540m tower is a fixture of the skyline. You can see it virtually from everywhere in Moscow, and this is where you can get the best panoramic views (yep, even better than Empire skyscraper).

top things to do in Moscow

Parts of the floor are made of tempered glass, so it can be quite scary to exit the elevator. But trust me, as you start observing buildings and cars below, you won’t want to leave. There is only a limited number of tickets per day, so you may want to book online. Insider tip: the first tour is cheaper, you can save up to $10 if go there early.

Day 5 – A Tour To Moscow Manor Houses

Metro Station: Kolomenskoye, Tsaritsyno on Dark Green Line / Kuskovo on Purple Line

I love visiting the manor houses and palaces in Moscow. These opulent buildings were generally built to house Russian aristocratic families and monarchs. Houses tend to be rather grand affairs with impressive architecture. And, depending on the whims of the owners, some form of a landscaped garden.

During the early part of the 20th century though, many of Russia’s aristocratic families (including the family of the last emperor) ended up being killed or moving abroad . Their manor houses were nationalized. Some time later (after the fall of the USSR) these were open to the public. It means that today a great many of Moscow’s finest manor houses and palaces are open for touring.

one week Moscow itinerary

20 Travel Tips I’ve Learned From Travelling The World

There are 20 manor houses scattered throughout the city and more than 25 in the area around. But not all of them easily accessible and exploring them often takes a lot of time. I’d recommend focusing on three most popular estates in Moscow that are some 30-minute metro ride away from Kremlin.

Sandwiched between the Moscow River and the Andropov Avenue, Kolomenskoye is a UNESCO site that became a public park in the 1920’s. Once a former royal estate, now it is one of the most tranquil parks in the city with gorgeous views. The Ascension Church, The White Column, and the grounds are a truly grand place to visit.

You could easily spend a full day here, exploring a traditional Russian village (that is, in fact, a market), picnicking by the river, enjoying the Eastern Orthodox church architecture, hiking the grounds as well as and wandering the park and gardens with wildflower meadows, apple orchards, and birch and maple groves. The estate museum showcases Russian nature at its finest year-round.

12 Stunning National Parks and Regional Parks In France

If my travel itinerary for one week in Moscow was a family tree, Tsaritsyno Park would probably be the crazy uncle that no-one talks about. It’s a large park in the south of the city of mind-boggling proportions, unbelievable in so many ways, and yet most travelers have never heard of it.

The palace was supposed to be a summer home for Empress Catherine the Great. But since the construction didn’t meet with her approval the palace was abandoned. Since the early 1990’s the palace, the pond, and the grounds have been undergoing renovations. The entire complex is now looking brighter and more elaborately decorated than at possibly any other time during its history. Like most parks in Moscow, you can visit Tsaritsyno free of charge, but there is a small fee if you want to visit the palace.

Moscow itinerary

How To Stop Procrastinating When Trip Planning

Last, but by no means least on my Moscow itinerary is Kuskovo Park . This is definitely an off-the-beaten-path place. While it is not easily accessible, you will be rewarded with a lack of crowds. This 18th-century summer country house of the Sheremetev family was one of the first summer country estates of the Russian nobility. And when you visit you’ll quickly realize why locals love this park.

Like many other estates, Kuskovo has just been renovated. So there are lovely French formal garden, a grotto, and the Dutch house to explore. Make sure to plan your itinerary well because the estate is some way from a metro station.

Day 6 – Explore the Golden Ring

Creating the Moscow itinerary may keep you busy for days with the seemingly endless amount of things to do. Visiting the so-called Golden Ring is like stepping back in time. Golden Ring is a “theme route” devised by promotion-minded journalist and writer Yuri Bychkov.

Having started in Moscow the route will take you through a number of historical cities. It now includes Suzdal, Vladimir, Kostroma, Yaroslavl and Sergiev Posad. All these awe-inspiring towns have their own smaller kremlins and feature dramatic churches with onion-shaped domes, tranquil residential areas, and other architectural landmarks.

Two Weeks In Thailand: The Perfect 14-Day Itinerary

I only visited two out of eight cities included on the route. It is a no-brainer that Sergiev Posad is the nearest and the easiest city to see on a day trip from Moscow. That being said, you can explore its main attractions in just one day. Located some 70 km north-east of the Russian capital, this tiny and overlooked town is home to Trinity Lavra of St. Sergius, UNESCO Site.

things to do in Moscow in seven days

You Will Also Like: 3-Day London Itinerary

Sergiev Posad is often described as being at the heart of Russian spiritual life. So it is uncommon to see the crowds of Russian pilgrims showing a deep reverence for their religion. If you’re traveling independently and using public transport, you can reach Sergiev Posad by bus (departs from VDNKh) or by suburban commuter train from Yaroslavskaya Railway Station (Bahnhof). It takes about one and a half hours to reach the town.

Trinity Lavra of St. Sergius is a great place to get a glimpse of filling and warming Russian lunch, specifically at the “ Gostevaya Izba ” restaurant. Try the duck breast, hearty potato and vegetables, and the awesome Napoleon cake.

Day 7 – Gorky Park, Izmailovo Kremlin, Patriarch’s Ponds

Metro Station: Park Kultury or Oktyabrskaya on Circle Line / Partizanskaya on Dark Blue Line / Pushkinskaya on Dark Green Line

Gorky Park is in the heart of Moscow. It offers many different types of outdoor activities, such as dancing, cycling, skateboarding, walking, jogging, and anything else you can do in a park. Named after Maxim Gorky, this sprawling and lovely park is where locals go on a picnic, relax and enjoy free yoga classes. It’s a popular place to bike around, and there is a Muzeon Art Park not far from here. A dynamic location with a younger vibe. There is also a pier, so you can take a cruise along the river too.

Random Russian guy

How to Save Money While Traveling in Europe

The Kremlin in Izmailovo is by no means like the one you can find near the Red Square. Originally built for decorative purposes, it now features the Vernissage flea market and a number of frequent fairs, exhibitions, and conferences. Every weekend, there’s a giant flea market in Izmailovo, where dozens of stalls sell Soviet propaganda crap, Russian nesting dolls, vinyl records, jewelry and just about any object you can imagine. Go early in the morning if you want to beat the crowds.

All the Bulgakov’s fans should pay a visit to Patriarch’s Ponds (yup, that is plural). With a lovely small city park and the only one (!) pond in the middle, the location is where the opening scene of Bulgakov’s novel Master and Margarita was set. The novel is centered around a visit by Devil to the atheistic Soviet Union is considered by many critics to be one of the best novels of the 20th century. I spent great two hours strolling the nearby streets and having lunch in the hipster cafe.

Conclusion and Recommendations

To conclude, Moscow is a safe city to visit. I have never had a problem with getting around and most locals are really friendly once they know you’re a foreigner. Moscow has undergone some serious reconstruction over the last few years. So you can expect some places to be completely different. I hope my one week Moscow itinerary was helpful! If you have less time, say 4 days or 5 days, I would cut out day 6 and day 7. You could save the Golden Ring for a separate trip entirely as there’s lots to see!

Thinking of visiting Russia? When visiting such a famous city, one must, of course, visit the iconic landmarks first. Moscow has plenty of those, most of them in the center of the city, which is very well-planned for tourists. Once you’ve seen the sights that are on most travelers’ lists, it’s time to branch out and visit some of the lesser-known sites, and there are some fascinating places to see and things to do.

I know this list is long, but I just couldn’t help myself. You probably won’t have the time to see them all. But that’s okay. Just scroll through the list and choose what sounds the most interesting to you. Where possible, make sure to book in advance, as things can get crowded, especially during high season.

Saint Basil's Cathedral in Moscow, Russia

1. The Red Square, Kremlin, And Surroundings

Red Square (Krasnya Ploshad) is the heart and soul of Russia, and where much of the country’s history has unfolded. This is the most famous landmark in Moscow and indeed the whole country, it’s an absolute must-do! The square is always full of people and has a rather festive atmosphere!

Saint Basil’s Cathedral

This is the famous church with the rainbow-colored, onion-domed roof. The cathedral was commissioned in the 1500s by Ivan the Terrible and according to legend, the Tsar thought it was so beautiful, that he ordered that the architect’s eyes be cut out afterward, so he could never build anything more beautiful! He wasn’t called Ivan the Terrible for no reason!

Lenin’s Mausoleum

The “love-it-or-hate-it” of tourist attractions in Russia. A glass sarcophagus containing the embalmed body of Russian revolutionary, Vladimir Lenin. It may seem a bit bizarre to display the mummy of a person, but it has been there for almost half a century and the 2.5 million visitors who come each year, clearly feel the queuing and thorough body search are worth it, to be in Lenin’s presence.

Pro Tip: no photos and no loud talking are allowed inside the Mausoleum.

Eternal Flame

There is an Eternal Flame in honor of an unknown soldier on the left side of Red Square. The hourly changing of the guards is worth seeing.

The Kremlin is the official residence of the Russian president. You can see it from the outside, or you can take an excursion to one of the museums located inside. This is the biggest active fortress in Europe, and holds a week’s worth of attractions! Once behind the 7,332-feet of walls, there are five squares, four cathedrals, 20 towers, various museums, and the world’s largest bell and cannon to see. Worth a special mention is the Armory Chamber that houses a collection of the famous Faberge Eggs.

Pro Tip: You can only go inside the Kremlin if you are part of a tourist group.

Interior of the Bolshoi Theatre in Moscos

2. Bolshoi Theatre

Bolshoi Theatre translates to “The Big Theatre” in Russian, and the building is home to both the Bolshoi Ballet and Bolshoi Opera — among the oldest and most famous ballet and opera companies in the world.

Pro Tip: It’s hard to get an inexpensive ticket, so if you’re reading well in advance of going to Moscow then try buying tickets on the official website . Last-minute tickets cost around $250 per person. If this is out of your budget, about an hour before a performance, you can try buying a ticket at the entrance from a reseller. Most can speak enough English to negotiate the price.

Tour the Bolshoi Theatre: You can take a group guided tour of the Bolshoi Theatre which focuses on the history and architecture of the theatre and behind the scenes. There’s an English language tour that lasts 2 hours and costs around $300 for a group of up to six.

GUM, a popular department store in Moscow

3. Luxury Shopping At GUM And TSUM

Russia’s main department store, GUM, has a stunning interior that is home to over 100 high-end boutiques, selling a variety of brands: from luxurious Dior to the more affordable Zara. Even if shopping is not on your Moscow to-do list GUM is still worth a visit; the glass-roofed arcade faces Red Square and offers a variety of classy eateries. TSUM, one of the biggest luxury malls in town, is right behind the Bolshoi and GUM. It’s an imposing building with lots of history, and worth a visit just for its design and its glass roof.

Christ the Savior Cathedral in Moscow

4. Christ The Savior Cathedral

This is one of Russia’s most visited cathedrals and is a newer addition to the gorgeous array of Muscovite cathedrals, but don’t let its young age fool you. After perestroika, in the early 90s, the revived Russian Orthodox Church was given permission to build a cathedral on this site. It did the location honors and built the largest temple of the Christian Orthodox Church. The façade is as grand as you’d expect, but it’s the inside that will mesmerize you, with its domes, gold, gorgeous paintings, and decor!

The cathedral is located just a few hundred feet away from the Kremlin and was the site of the infamous Pussy Riot protest against Putin back in 2012.

Pro Tip: Bring a shawl to cover your hair as is the local custom.

Gates at Gorky Park in Moscow

5. Gorky Park

Moscow’s premier green space, Gorky Park (Park Gor’kogo) is the city’s biggest and most famous park. There is entertainment on offer here for every taste, from outdoor dancing sessions to yoga classes, volleyball, ping-pong, rollerblading, and bike and boat rental in summer. In winter, half the park turns into a huge ice skating rink. Gorky Park is also home to an open-air movie theater and the Garage Museum of Contemporary Art. There is also Muzeon Art Park, a dynamic contemporary space with a unique collection of 700 sculptures. It is located right in front of Gorky Park.

6. Sparrow Hills Park

If you take a walk from Gorky Park, along the Moscow River embankment, you’ll end up in the city’s other legendary park, Sparrow Hills. Although the park doesn’t offer as many activities as its hip neighbor, it has a great panoramic view of the city

Pro Tip: You can take a free walking tour to all of the above attractions with an English-speaking guide.

River cruise in Moscow

7. River Cruising

One of the best ways to experience Moscow, and see all the famous landmarks, but from a different angle, is from the Moscow River. Take a river cruise. Avoid the tourist crowds. There are little nameless old boats that do the cruise, but if you are looking for a more luxurious experience take the Radisson Blu cruise and enjoy the sights with some good food and a glass of wine.

Moscow Metro station

8. Metro Hopping

Inaugurated in the 1930s, the Moscow Metro system is one of the oldest and most beautiful in the world. Started in Stalinist times, each station is a work of art in its own right. I’d recommend touring the stations between 11 a.m. and 4 p.m. This way, you’ll be able to properly see it without the crowds. Ideally, I’d recommend taking a tour with a knowledgeable guide with GuruWalk, who will tell you stories of forgotten stations and how the history of the country is interconnected with the metro development. If going by yourself, then I definitely recommend checking out: Mayakovskaya, Ploschad Revolutsii, Kievskaya, Kropotkinskaya, Kurskaya, and Novoslobodskaya stations.

Visit the free Moscow Metro Museum: For real train enthusiasts, located in the southern vestibule of Sportivnaya station is a small free museum. Here you can take a peek into the driver’s cabin, see a collection of metro tokens from different cities, and see different models of a turnstile, traffic lights, escalator, and more.

Moscow State University at dusk

9. Moscow State University View

In his effort to create a grander Moscow, Stalin had seven skyscrapers built in different parts of town; they’re called the Seven Sisters. The largest of these buildings and the one with the best view is the main building of the Moscow State University. Although this is a little outside the city center, the view is more than worth it.

Izmailovsky Market in Moscow, Russia

10. Izmailovsky Market

Mostly known for the city’s largest flea market, the district of Izmaylovo is home to a maze of shops where you can get just about anything, from artisan crafts to traditional fur hats, handcrafted jewelry, fascinating Soviet memorabilia, and antiquities. It’s also one of Moscow’s largest green spaces. There are often no price tags, so be prepared to haggle a bit. Head to one of the market cafes for a warming mulled wine before continuing your shopping spree.

The History of Vodka Museum is found here, and the museum’s restaurant is the perfect place to sample various brands of the national drink.

Once you’ve covered the more touristy spots, Moscow still has plenty to offer, and the places below will also be full of locals! So for some local vibes, I would strongly recommend the spots below!

The skyscrapers of Moscow City

11. Moscow City

With a completely different vibe, Moscow City (also referred to as Moscow International Business Center) is like a mini Dubai, with lots of impressive tall glass buildings. Here is where you’ll find the best rooftops in towns, like Ruski Restaurant, the highest restaurant both in Moscow City and in Europe. Moscow City is great for crowd-free shopping and the best panoramic views of the city.

Art in the Tretyakov Gallery in Moscow

12. Tretyakov Gallery

Tretyakov Gallery started as the private collection of the Tretyakov brothers, who were 19th-century philanthropists. They gave their private collection to the government after their deaths. If there is just one museum you visit in Moscow, I recommend this one!

Tsaritsyno Museum Reserve, former residence of Catherine the Great

13. Tsaritsyno Museum-Reserve

Tsaritsyno was a residence of Catherine the Great more than two centuries ago. It became derelict during the Soviet era but has now been fully renovated. With its opulently decorated buildings, gardens, meadows, and forests, Tsaritsyno Park is the perfect place for a green respite in Moscow.

Kolomenskoye Museum-Reserve in Moscow

14. Kolomenskoye

A 10-minute metro ride from the city center is Kolomenskoe Museum-Reserve, where you can get an idea of what Russia looked like 200 years ago. You’ll find ancient churches (one dating back to the 16th century), the oldest garden in Moscow, and the wonderful fairytale wooden palace of Tsar Alexey Mikhailovich, father of Peter the Great.

Ostankino TV Tower in Moscow at night

15. Ostankino TV Tower

Built in 1967, Ostankino TV Tower was the tallest free-standing construction in the world at the time, it’s still the 8th tallest building in the world and the highest in Europe. It’s also the best observation deck, with a glass floor and 360-degree views. The speedy elevators take you 1,105 feet in next to no time.

Pro Tip: You need to book in advance; entrance is based on specific ticket times and the capacity is limited and only a certain number of tourists are allowed per day. Don’t forget your passport, you’ll need it to get through security.

The floating bridge of Zaryadye Park in Moscow

16. Zaryadye Park

Zaryadye is a newly opened, landscaped urban park so new you won’t find it in a lot of tour guides. The park is near Red Square and is divided into four climatic zones: forest, steppe, tundra, and floodplains, depicting the variety of climatic zones in Russia.

These last three suggestions are a little quirky, but all are really worth checking out.

17. Museum Of Soviet Arcade Games

Release your inner child playing on 66 arcade machines from the Soviet era! What a great way to spend a couple of hours when tired of visiting museums and palaces. The staff speaks excellent English and are happy to explain how the games work.

The rooftops of Moscow, Russia

18. Moscow Rooftop Tour

Take a 1-hour private Moscow rooftop tour with an experienced roofer. I can just about guarantee none of your friends will be able to say they’ve done it! For your comfort, I recommend wearing comfortable shoes. Take your camera, there are some amazing photo opportunities out there!

A pool at Sanduny Banya in Moscow

19. Sanduny Banya

This classical Russian bathhouse opened its doors in 1808 and is famous for combining traditional Russian banya services with luxurious interiors and service. If you enjoy spas and saunas, then you should experience a Russian bathhouse at least once in your life! Go with an open mind and hire a specialist to steam you as it’s meant to be done — by being beaten repeatedly with a besom (a leafy branch)! This is said to improve circulation, but is best done by a professional!

So there you have my list of things to do in Moscow. I could have gone on and on and on, but I didn’t want to try your patience! There are so many things to do in this vibrant city that you’ll definitely need to allocate several days for exploring.

Stay in the house from 'Up': Airbnb unveils new Icons category with one-of-a-kind listings

travel booking experience

A new crop of listings from Airbnb might have you making some tweaks to your bucket list.

The booking platform unveiled its "Icons" category on Wednesday, a collection of one-of-a-kind stays and experiences.

Guests can book listings like a stay in a replica of Carl Fredricksen's house from Disney and Pixar’s “Up” in Abiquiu, New Mexico – that can be suspended up to 50 feet in the air by a crane while guests are outside, with over 8,000 balloons attached for good measure – or a living room concert by rapper Doja Cat.

The category expands on similar listings Airbnb has offered in the past, such as Barbie’s Malibu DreamHouse .

“One of the core ideas of Airbnb is that you can step inside someone else's world,” CEO Brian Chesky told USA TODAY. He said the company began wondering if it could apply that to fantastical worlds customers might only dream about.

“I think when you take something that was only in your imagination, and you make that real, it creates a sense of magic,” he added.

What can guests expect from Airbnb Icons?

Airbnb is launching Icons with 11 options and will add more on a rolling basis.

Those include an overnight stay at the Ferrari Museum in Maranello, Italy. “You’ll sleep on a bed crafted from the same leather as Ferrari seats, take a lap with Scuderia Ferrari ambassador driver Marc Gené, and head to Emilia-Romagna’s premier race as a VIP,” the company said in a news release.

One listing offers views of the 2024 Paris Olympics opening ceremony from the Musée d’Orsay, with its clock room turned into a bedroom by Mathieu Lehanneur (who designed the torch and cauldron for this summer’s games). Another opens Prince’s Minneapolis, Minnesota house from the 1984 rock musical movie “Purple Rain” to guests. The stay features a studio session with “rare and special tracks” as well.

How do you book Airbnb Icons?

The Icons category is featured on the homepage of Airbnb’s website and app, with a countdown clock showing when a listing will become available. Users can then request to book.

“People are just going to be asked to fill out their profile on Airbnb, answer some questions about why they want to stay, and then … we’ll kind of randomly narrow it into a set of submissions, and then we're going to read every one of those submissions and pick people. And I think this is just a way to create a little of that Willy Wonka-type joy and surprise.”

Fittingly, guests who are chosen will get a digital golden ticket. The company plans to distribute more than 4,000 of those this year.

How much do Airbnb Icons cost?

The majority of listings in the category are free, but all cost less than $100 per guest. Those who book will be responsible for any travel costs, however.

Chesky said he sees Icons as “the beginning of the next chapter of Airbnb.”

“I feel like if we can make a 40,000 (pound) house lift through the sky, we can do anything,” he said.
