This was an excellent tour!! Lunch and pictures and transportation were all included, and the guides were fantastic. I would do GeoTours for anything if I went to Baños again, which I likely will, as an American expat living in Ecuador! There are many tour companies in town but this one is the most reputable, most friendly, and most accommodating to different skill levels and abilities.

The History of Baños

Baños has a long and fascinating history that dates back to the arrival of Spanish conquistadors in the 16th century. These adventurers were searching for gold and other valuable resources and quickly realized the strategic location of Baños.

Over the centuries, Baños has been shaped by a variety of cultural influences. From indigenous tribes to the Spanish colonizers who left their mark on the architecture and traditions of the town.

In 1999, the town faced a significant volcanic eruption from the Tungurahua volcano, resulting in the evacuation of the complete population. While people had to relocate for a longer period, the resilience of the local community prevailed with protests to be able to return to their loved hometown. Baños has since recovered and flourished as a popular tourist destination, drawing visitors from all over the world.

Getting to and around Baños is straightforward, with several transport options available.

If you’re coming from Quito, Ecuador’s capital, you can take a bus, drive or hire a taxi for the 3-4 hour journey. The bus ride is affordable and scenic, taking you through the dreamy green valleys and majestic mountains of the Andes. There are also direct buses from other towns and cities in Ecuador, such as Guayaquil and Cuenca.

Transportation options and safety

Once you arrive in Baños, you can easily explore the town on foot. Most of the town’s attractions and amenities are located within a few blocks of each other, and the streets are lined with colorful buildings and shops selling souvenirs and local handicrafts. Taxis and rental cars are also available, although parking can be limited in some areas.

You need transport to explore the surrounding nature and countryside. When you feel like changing scenery, you can easily find transport from Baños to other destinations.

Take a group or private tour in Baños

Several tour companies offer guided trips to nearby attractions such as the Tungurahua volcano, the waterfalls, and the Amazon rainforest. For a more commercial experience, they do a city tour on their double-deck bus with Latino music with stops at the main attractions. Like the main waterfall The Devil’s Cauldron, the Mega Adventure Park where you can do canopying, and more, and a traditional Guyaba fabric. All with guides who share insider insights about the city. There is a photographer onboard who can take pics for you for a small fee.

Customized, private tours in Baños

Chebas Tour also offers private tours. I did both the group tour and a smaller private tour with Sebastian. I’d definitely recommend the private tour since it feels more authentic and will be customized based on your preferences. Enjoy the flexibility, explore at your own pace and discover gems and main attractions without the same crowds. Sebastian knows a lot about Baños and has an interesting story himself, so you will learn a lot!

Is Baños safe?

Baños is a very safe town overall. As with any destination, it’s always better to take precautions to avoid unnecessary risks. It’s still important to be aware of your surroundings and avoid walking alone on desolate streets late at night.

Where to stay in Baños

Luna volcan: a paradise you won’t feel like leaving.

From the moment you arrive at Luna Volcán , the exceptional service makes you feel pampered and cared for. Luxury and tranquility come perfectly together to create an unforgettable escape. While it’s only a 20 min drive away from Baños, you will feel far away from everything .

I start my stay with a spiritual cleaning treatment in their spa. An amazing massage followed by a rose bath. At night, enjoy life in the jacuzzi. The lights at the pool area and the stunning views of the city feel magical.

The restaurant offers meals throughout the day. For dinner, I have their avocado ceviche as a starter. Tasty, creamy, and a bit sweet. Followed by the meat with wine and crispy potatoes prepared just right. For breakfast, you can choose between traditional or international options.

You can also stop by their on-site shop to explore and try authentic products from the region – from wine to delicious chocolate. The only thing you’ll wish for when it’s time to leave is more.

Casa Del Peregrino Santo Thomas: Affordable oasis with a beautiful purpose

Casa del Peregrino Santo Tomas is a relaxing home away from home about 15 minutes walk from the town of Baños. Come here to relax while being close to it all. The rooms are simple and comfortable. There is a charming garden and hammocks on site, perfect to unwind with a book, reflect, and meditate. Their traditional Ecuadorian sauna experience is also worth coming here for alone!

While the place itself is charming, what stands out the most is the story and personal service from Wilfredo and his wife who run it. They lost their son in a tragic accident years ago and decided to start the hotel in honor of him. Named after the son, the revenue goes towards supporting a child hospital, making your stay a meaningful contribution to kids in need.

There is no restaurant on site, so this is also a great option if you’re planning to be out and about to explore the town during the day. You ca then come back and sleep like a baby without the noise from the town.

What to do: Must-Visit attractions in Baños

One of the main reasons to visit Baños is for its stunning natural attractions. From hot springs to adrenaline-pumping adventures, Baños has something for everyone.

Here are some of the top attractions to visit. Since the city gets crowded on the weekend, I recommend you visit the main ones during the weekday or off-peak hours if possible.

The Famous Hot Springs

No visit to Baños is complete without a dip in the town’s famous hot springs. There are several facilities to choose from, ranging from rustic outdoor pools to luxurious spa resorts. The thermal waters are rich in minerals and are said to have therapeutic properties that can heal sore muscles and promote relaxation. Some of the most popular hot springs include Santa Ana, La Virgen, Nuevo Virgen, and El Salado. Prices vary depending on the facility and the services offered. Some spas in town, like Luna Volcan, also have thermal pools.

The Devil’s Cauldron Waterfall

The Devil’s Cauldron (Pailón del Diablo in Spanish) is a massive waterfall located just outside of Baños. The water tumbles down from a height of over 80 meters (260 feet). It feels surreal, even when you’re right there. Arrive by car and a 15 min walk along a narrow path through the forest. There are two entrances offering views from different angles. There’s also a small museum, a gift shop, and a few restaurants on-site.

Casa del Arbol (Treehouse) and The Swing at the End of the World

The Swing at the End of the World is a unique attraction that’s become something of an Instagram sensation in recent years. The swing itself is located on a wooden platform that overlooks a steep drop into the Pastaza River canyon. Feel like a kid again as you swing out with incredible views. The swing is located at Casa del Arbol (Treehouse).

The Basilica of Our Lady of the Rosary of Agua Santa

The Basilica of Our Lady of the Rosary of Agua Santa is a beautiful church located in central Baños. It was built in the early 20th century and features stunning stained glass windows, a towering bell tower, and intricate sculptures. You can take a guided tour and learn about its history and significance. Some popular routes include the Chamana waterfall trail, the Bellavista viewpoint trail, the Llanganates National Park trail, and climbing the volcano.

It’s a good idea to hire a guide or join a tour if you’re unfamiliar with the area. For some hikes, you also need a licensed guide to enter.

Biking and Mountain Biking

Baños has plenty of options for cycling enthusiasts. The town and its surroundings are crisscrossed with bike-friendly trails and roads, ranging from smooth pavement to rocky and bumpy terrain. Open throughout the day, the relaxing music, colorful interior full of personality, and delicious food makes you want to stay. Run by Carla and her husband who both have many years of experience within the hospitality industry, Caña Mandur invites you to feel at home. Her husband cooks and she runs around doing a little bit of everything. With food so good you’ll be thinking about it sometimes. “Just as visiting your mum’s house,” Carla says and smiles, pointing to her t-shirt with the brand text “made with love”.

Crater Rooftop Bar: Amazing cocktails with a city view

Crater Rooftop Bar is a dynamic venue combining a hostel, a restaurant, and a rooftop terrace, owned by the same family. The bar hosts events throughout the week, ranging from salsa nights to trivia, ladies’ night, and beer pong. The service and vibe are casual. It’s easy to get to know people even if you come here by yourself.

Head to the rooftop in time for the sunset and order a Pornstar Martini, a blend of vanilla, ice, lemon juice, and passionfruit. So good that it’s worth coming here for alone. They also have delicious Mojito de Mora or their own craft beer.

Mestizart Ecuadorian Resturant

The restaurant run by the same family in the same building serves tasty traditional food with a modern twist and is open all day. Choose whether you sit here or enjoy the food at the terrace. I try the Llpingachos with chorizo, traditional and delicious.

Come here to connect and learn about the culture from the passionate family who runs it, and explore art from local talent, while enjoying the delicious cuisine prepared to perfection.

The dad has worked as a president for the House of Culture (Casa Cultura) in Baños for years, the mum is a talented painter. The kids Daniella and David are also into music and art, and you can tell. The food, from the crispy bread to the juicy meat, the wine, and their homemade creamy yogurt for dessert, is delicious. They organize different types of events, such as introducing kids to art. It’s a beautiful initiative and a unique experience in Baños.

Leprechaun: Full of personality, perfect for dinner and drinks

The ambiance of Leprechaun is brought to life through its friendly service and colorful decor, with cool details and an impressive selection of beers from around the world, attracting a diverse crowd looking for a good time.

Start your night with one of their signature cocktails. Pedacito de Cielo, a unique blend of babaco, mandarin, rum, and vodka, or the one with their name, a refreshing mix of rum, peach, lemon, and aromatic bitters.

I try their Ceviche Palmito, marinated in their special salsa, and the meat of the house. While the taste is good, the shrimp doesn’t reach the same level as on the coast. The meat is delicious! Wrap up your visit with a chocolate cake dessert and sip on their craft beers.

Run by a young group of people from the area who knows how to create a good time , Leprechaun is the perfect place to unwind or get into the mode before a night out.

BAÑOS SAFETY TIPS

• Make sure to use mosquito repellent. While Baños is not located in a malarial area, there have been rare cases of yellow fever reported. Aside from that, it’s just good practice to protect yourself against mosquitos so that you’re not covered with itchy and uncomfortable bug bites.
• Wear sunscreen every day. Even when you don’t feel like you’re getting burned, the equatorial latitude and relatively high altitude of Baños can do a lot of damage to your skin without you noticing.
• Baños is a pretty safe town and petty crime is rare, but it’s still a good idea to avoid carrying too much cash on you.
• Don’t flash valuables like expensive cell phones or jewelry in public.

Baños is a mixed bag. The setting is amazing: you can see waterfalls, hike through lush forests, rest your bones in steaming thermal springs, hike down impossibly steep gorges, bike or boat all the way to the Amazon Basin, and marvel at the occasional eruption of nearby Volcán Tungurahua. The town itself is somewhat overwhelmed with garish tour operators, cut-price spas and budget accommodations, but the jigsaw-puzzle-like sidewalks in red, yellow, and blue are wide enough to stroll on, and the cathedrals, spotlit in different colors, look pretty from the plazas at night.

What to do in Banos de AguaSanta

Banos de Aguasanta is a small town located in the Central part of Ecuador, next to the Tungurahua volcano, its location makes it a beautiful valley plenty of beauty and nature, surrounded by mountains, falls, rivers, canyons, offers us many chances for adventure sports and make it a perfect place for pleasure and leisure.

Canyoning Banos

Surrounded by around 100 falls and valleys, it is an awesome spot for trying or training Cayoning. If you are asking yourself what is canyoning, it is just Canyon Exploration Using some required techniques, but no experience is necessary if you wonder to join us. For canyoning in Banos we have some routes to offer but we will point out 4 of them. Rio Blanco, Chamana, Chamanapamba and Cashaurco are the best places for doing this activity.

Paddling Adventures

As well known Banos is a place for nature and adventure, one of the most beloved adventures is River Rafting , in the Pasataza River is possible to reach level 5, that is for people with experience, in normal trips we just reach level 3+ that is enough for beginners, even children can manage it. We have daily departures in the morning 09:00 and at noon 14:30 both tours are the same it will be up on your wishes, the time you want to do it. In any case is a tour full of emotion and adrenaline.

Jungle Excursions

Jungle Cuyabeno is the second largest rainforest in Ecuador , and one of the most diverse in the world, it is located and the end of the Andes Region that makes it a unique Jungle , it has an unknown number of species of plants and animals, although this number is smaller as in the Yasuni National Park . For visiting Cuyabeno minimum 3 days are required, but we recommend the 4 days to enjoy the whole adventure, we mean in the 3 days is not possible to visit the Secoya Comunity.

Amazon tours from Banos are done in the Pastaza Province within the Amazon Region of Ecuador, this is a secondary Jungle, this is a perfect spot for spending one or two days where we lear about plants, animales, traditions, about Kichwa culture. It is higly recommended for those who don't have much time, and for those who has never been into the Jungle.

Chimborazo Volcano

The chimborazo reserve is one of the most important protected areas of our country, here is the highest volcano in the equator and one of the highest worldwide "volcano chimborazo". Here you can do hiking, trekking, biking and Mountain Climbing. Here we find the Andean paramo with its unique flora and fauna, here it is easy to see llamas, alpacas, vicu単as, birds, Andean foxes.

According to historians in the time of the Incario, this lagoon was visited by the Incas to carry out energetic rituals. today it is one of the most beautiful lakes on the planet

Waterfalls Route

Banos is surrounded by abundant nature, valleys, mountains, waterfalls, forests, rivers, lagoons. We are surrounded by around 100 waterfalls, 8 of them are formed online ready to be visited. There are different ways to visit them, bicycle, Chiva, private tour. The biggest and most impressive is the "Pailon del Diablo" fall, which is 20km from the city.

Originally built to observe the eruptions of the tungurahua volcano, the house of the tree or the swing of the end of the world have become an unmissable place to visit. It is located at almost 3000mt of atura, from where we have a beautiful view of the volcano and all the surrounding landscape, being there in the afternoon, you can appreciate beautiful sunsets.

Biking in Banos

For lovers of nature and outdoor sports, cycling will enchant you. There are some routes in Banos, but the most visited is the "Waterfalls Route", in which 7 waterfalls are visited, the tour is done alone, in our office we provide the map and the instructions to make this route. doing it alone is very fun, you have your own time and there is no pressure, in each waterfall there are activities, which can be done if you like.

The swing of the end of the world, is within the 100 places to visit before dying, if you are traveling around Ecuador do not forget this point. which is full of beauty and tranquility. Hiking, biking, parasailing, swimming, and soaring through the skies are just a few of the ultimate highlights of Baños, Ecuador . Don’t be fooled by the tiny size of this town hidden between the Andes Mountains and the Amazon Rainforest – there’s no way to get bored here.

We lived outside of Quito, Ecuador for two years and had the pleasure of doing pretty much all the best things to do in Baños, time and time again. Read on for our favorites, including the most popular activities and hidden attractions that make Baños one of the most appealing destinations in Ecuador for travelers of all types.

Things To Do in Baños, Ecuador

Perched above the town of Baños, the so-called Swing on the Edge of the World is one of the most recognizable images of Ecuador, having gone viral time and time again. The tiny treehouse known as Casa del Árbol clings to the hillside with a swing that seems to launch visitors over the perilous hillside below.

Visiting Casa del Árbol and riding the dramatic, if totally safe, swing at the edge of the world is a favorite activity for visitors and easily one of the best things to do in Baños, Ecuador.

Reaching Casa del Árbol is easy enough by catching a taxi from town, and winding up the mountainside for about ten minutes. All in all, it makes for an affordable and memorable way to spend an hour or two in Baños.

2. Visit the Thermal Baths

Baños, formally known as Baños de Agua Santa , takes its name from the numerous thermal baths that surround it, heated by the geothermal activity from the nearby Tungurahua volcano . Naturally, spending a relaxing afternoon soaking in the thermal waters is a must during your visit, and one of the best things to do in Baños.

There are a number of thermal baths near Baños to choose from. The Termas de la Virgen complex is the area’s least expensive thermal bath to visit, with a variety of different pools with thermal waters at different temperatures, and some are quite hot. The facilities are okay, though they can get a little dirty towards the middle and end of the day; try to visit early in the day or during a weekday when there are fewer visitors.

A slightly nicer thermal bath is El Refugio . This spot offers a more spa-like setting with mud baths, massages, and other spa treatments in addition to numerous pools of thermal waters.

3. Hit the Spa

If the standard thermal baths of Baños won’t cut it for you head straight to the Luna Volcán Hotel and Spa . A luxe spot that is the best place to stay in Baños , by far, this incredible hotel and spa complex also welcomes daytime visitors to its spa installation and thermal pools, which put the others in town to shame.

A day pass at Luna Volcán Hotel and Spa costs $20 for access the thermal pools and jacuzzis, as well as access to the bathrooms, locker room, and shower with all the related amenities thrown in. The pool’s stunning view over Baños is like none other, and is alone worth the price of admission.

4. Party the Night Away

If you’re backpacking Ecuador, Baños will be an obligatory stop on your itinerary – there’s no question about it. As one of the most popular destinations in Ecuador with backpackers, Baños has more than its fair share of bars and “clubs,” if you’d call them that, to choose from.

Leprechuan Bar has long been one of the best places to party in Baños, with a surprisingly massive space featuring multiple bars and party spaces. Things in Baños don’t close down until around 3 AM (keep this in mind when you decide where to stay in Baños if you’re not the party type!), so you’re in for a long night.

5. Visit Pailón del Diablo

Baños is situated in a unique spot in the Andes where high altitude mountains transform into low-lying Amazon Rainforest, sending roaring rivers tumbling down into waterfalls. From smaller falls hidden in the forest to giant falls that tumble from great heights, the waterfalls of Baños are some of the area’s must-see sights.

The largest waterfall in Baños is the so-called Devil’s Cauldron, or, Pailón del Diablo . Tumbling dramatically into a tiny crevice below, its a spectacular, raging waterfall that is sure to impress.

Entrance to the area costs just a few dollars, and the waterfall is quite easily reached by a short hike in and out, including a pass over a well-built suspension bridge over the river. Bring a rain jacket if you can, as well as shoes with a good grip. While the hike isn’t too challenging, the ground can get wet with the mist of the waterfall, so you’ll want to come prepared.

6. Try White Water Rafting

While the nearby Amazon Rainforest gateway city of Tena, Ecuador is the best known city in Ecuador for white water rafting, Baños is another excellent spot for this adventurous activity. You’ll find a variety of white water rapids within a short drive of Baños, so everyone from beginners to more experienced rafters will enjoy the ride.

Most white water rafting excursions leave from Baños around 9:00 AM and last for a few hours. There are plenty of waterfalls to see and enjoy around Baños beyond just the famous Pailón del Diablo. An easy and exhilarating way to see some of the most beautiful falls around Baños is by renting a bike for a few hours and cycling the easy Ruta de las Cascadas , the waterfall route.-

Biking the Ruta de las Cascadas is the best way to explore the waterfalls of Baños. Though you’ll need to ride along a busy street for about half a mile before reaching the more scenic area on the way out of town , you’ll love the route along the river that takes you past them all.

You’ll discover a selection of thermal baths that provide a serene and revitalizing escape. Among the well-liked options are Cocalmayo and Aguas Calientes. To reach these thermal baths, travelers can opt for a bus or shared car ride from Cusco to Santa Teresa and use local transportation to reach the bathhouses. 

Visitors can board a train from Ollantaytambo, which will take them to the ‘Hidroelectrica’ station. From there, they must arrange a car to transport them to Santa Teresa or the hot springs.

Within a short drive of Baños, you may encounter rapids of various difficulty levels, so both novice and expert rafters will enjoy the journey. I did this activity alone and ended up with a lovely French family. It was my first rafting experience, and it was absolutely amazing. The water was pretty wild, but I enjoyed every minute of it.

7. Rock Climbing

Climbers of all skill levels may find the best rock climbing walls at the volcanoes near Baños. You can enroll in introductory rock climbing classes with a licensed teacher. If you’re a skilled climber, you can rent equipment or bring a guide if you’re climbing alone.
