Family Beach Time

Visitors come to the tropical north of Queensland primarily for one thing – the Great Barrier Reef. The reef is right on Palm Cove's doorstep but no reef tours depart directly from the Cove. However, Palm Cove is perfectly positioned between Cairns and Port Douglas - two locations with hundreds of touring possibilities just 25 and 40 minutes away respectively. Many of the tours offered in the area do have Palm Cove pickups so there isn’t much hassle for tourists getting to tours.

Great Barrier Reef Tours

Fly, swim, dive and cruise are just some of the activities that can be done around the Great Barrier Reef. TravelOnline has a collection of tours to cover every possible experience on the reef - Great Barrier Reef tours

There are plenty of options when it comes to seeing and experiencing the reef. Medium sized cruise liners slowly cover the reef in luxury and comfort for multiple nights. Sailing ships drift quietly along the coast offering snorkeling opportunities at every location. Day trip options are endless where snorkelers, scuba divers and swimmers can visit tropical islands, stay at an ocean pontoon or use the boat as a base for underwater exploration. There are dinner cruises also available.

North Queensland is more than just reef tours. The World Heritage Listed Daintree Rainforest is about an hour away from Palm Cove. In the Daintree tourists have the choice of river cruises, 4WD safaris and rainforest treks. Visit Cape Tribulation, Mossman Gorge, Noah Valley and the Bloomfield Track. Not quite in the rainforest but close to Palm Cove is the exciting Skyrail cableway. Skyrail in conjunction with the Kuranda Scenic Railway makes for a wonderful day out in the tropics.

Take to the air and join a helicopter tour for half an hour to an hour in length. Fly along the cost and over hundreds of individual reefs with fantastic photo opportunities along the way. For something a little more laid back but still in the air, a hot air balloon ride will do the trick. Hot air balloon rides operate away from the coast over the Atherton Tablelands but do pickups from Palm Cove accommodations.

Discover the Great Barrier Reef When You Visit Palm Cove

  • September 26, 2022

For many people, a visit to Palm Cove in Far North Queensland will involve a Great Barrier Reef experience.

And this is for good reason. The Great Barrier Reef is one of the most incredible and unique natural attractions in the world, and when you’re in Palm Cove, you have your pick of a variety of different ways that you can discover its majesty.

If you’re planning a trip to Palm Cove and want to include a Great Barrier Reef experience, keep reading to learn more about this remarkable attraction, including what you can see there and some of the different ways you can experience it.

About the Great Barrier Reef

barrier reef tours palm cove

It is the world’s largest reef system, comprising more than 3000 individual reefs and 900 islands, and covering an area of more than 348,000 square kilometres. It starts from Bundaberg in Queensland’s south and runs all the way up to the Cape York Peninsula. The sheer size of the reef is sometimes hard to comprehend, spanning a distance of around 2,300 kilometres, which is more than double the length of the United Kingdom.

The Great Barrier Reef is a World Heritage Site, having been listed in 1988 and is also considered one of the seven natural wonders of the world. And on top of all of this, it’s even visible from space.

What can you see at the Reef?

The Great Barrier Reef is known as having such a diverse array of marine creatures that call it home, which means that there is an almost endless list of the types of wildlife you may encounter.

More than 1500 different species of fish call the Reef home, as well as sea turtles, dolphins, sharks, whales, birds, rays, jellyfish, crustaceans, clams, and of course, coral. In fact, there are more than 400 different kinds of coral in the Reef, which makes for some pretty spectacular natural displays of beauty.

In addition to the animals of the Reef, the stunning natural beauty of the region is a sight to see. The turquoise waters and the intricate Reef systems are unlike anything else in the world.

And there is also a lot of the Reef that is yet to be discovered. Even as recent as 2020, a new coral reef structure was found near Cape York. Which means that you might see something that no one else ever has before when you visit the GBR.

What time of year is best to visit the Great Barrier Reef

The beauty of Far North Queensland is that it’s a great place to visit at any time of year. The seasons are traditionally divided into two main seasons, with the “Dry” season occurring from April through to October, and the “Wet” season running from November through to March.

Dry season coincides with Australia’s winter and Far North Queensland is often a popular holiday destination for people living in other parts of the country who are looking for some warmth. The temperature tends to sit between 19 to 24 degrees Celsius, making it pleasant and visitors to the Great Barrier Reef are often surprised by just how lovely the weather is at this time of year. During the Wet season , the temperatures can get a bit warmer, usually sitting between 25 to 31 degrees Celsius, with a higher level of humidity due to this time of year being when the majority of Queensland’s rainfall will occur.

There are certainly perks for either season – if you visit during the dry season you can avoid the need to wear a stinger suit if you’re spending time in the water and it’s also when whales tend to visit the region. If you visit during the wet season, you might have to wear a stinger suit, but it’s also turtle breeding and hatching season as well as coral spawning season, which is a magical natural event.

Coral spawning occurs usually in November or December, but predicting the exact dates of the event is challenging because there is still an air of mystery around the conditions that need to be just right for the spawning to occur. You can learn more about coral spawning at the Great Barrier Reef here .

How you can visit the Reef

The size of the Reef as well as the many different inhabitants means that no matter your interests, there’s bound to be a tour or activity that appeals to you.

Being in Palm Cove puts you in a great location to make the most of the Reef from, as many of the best tours depart from Port Douglas, which is 36 km north of Palm Cove, or from Cairns, which is 26 km south of Palm Cove. Many of these tours also offer transfers from Palm Cove to make it even easier.

You can always opt to spend some time out on the water doing a variety of water-based activities, like sea kayaking, swimming, and stand up paddle boarding, which you can enjoy from the shores of the Palm Cove beach.

Some of our favourite ways to experience the Great Barrier Reef include:

Outer Reef Trip

barrier reef tours palm cove

You can essentially enjoy a full day of sailing, snorkelling and sustainable exploration.

The journey takes you out to the Mackay and Undine Reef Cays, and from there you can step off the cays to explore the coral gardens that surround them.

This trip is definitely suited to people who are comfortable and confident in the water, as you have the opportunity to discover the Reef at your own pace.

A marine biologist will be onboard for your tour so you can learn about the Reef and ask questions as you wish, and they can even take you on a guided snorkel tour.

Lunch and afternoon tea is also provided, as well as snorkelling equipment.

You can learn more about this tour here .

An Island Adventure

barrier reef tours palm cove

The island itself is surrounded by coral gardens of the Reef – they are only metres from the shore. So, you can explore the island, spend some time on the beautiful beaches and walk into the water to start discovering this amazing marine world.

The island also offers many different water-based activities, including snorkelling and scuba diving, and the best part is that it doesn’t matter whether you’ve done these before or not. There are lessons and tour options for people of all experience levels.

The island’s resort also offers rental of snorkel and scuba equipment as well as stand up paddle boards and sea kayaks.

You can also discover the Reef by staying dry while you’re on the island, with glass-bottomed boat rides and even a turtle rehabilitation centre on the island. Make sure you book these experiences in advance because they are super popular.

Learn more about Fitzroy Island here.

barrier reef tours palm cove

You can witness the scale and natural beauty of the Reef during a helicopter ride with GBR helicopters. A truly unique and intimate way to see the Reef, the turquoise waters and the way the sunlight glimmers off the reef systems is an unforgettable sight.

You can also take in the beauty of the mainland, with views of the rainforest and spectacular coastline abundant from this angle too.

GBR Helicopter tours leave from Cairns, and offer plenty of upgrade options for your experience, which you can learn about here .

Visit the Great Barrier Reef when you stay at the Reef House

The Reef House in Palm Cove is the ideal holiday destination for those who want to discover the Great Barrier Reef. Palm Cove is located halfway between Port Douglas and Cairns, making it easy and convenient for you to get to either destination for your tour.

And then you can come back to this tranquil seaside village and stay in Palm Cove’s most iconic address, the Reef House .

Family Day Tours from Palm Cove - Visit Cairns Wildlife Parks and Zoos

Whether you are a tiny tot or not Palm Cove has a tour or sightseeing attraction for all the family to enjoy. From breakfast with the Koalas at the Hartley's Crocodile Park where you can give them a cuddle and have a photograph taken with them in your arms to lunch with lorikeets at the Wildlife Habitat in Port Douglas . Palm Cove is a family friendly holiday destination and caters to all children's age groups and capabilities.

Visit Cairns Great Barrier Reef From Palm Cove

If you would like to take the family out snorkeling on the Great Barrier Reef then there is a tour to suit your family and the floating pontoon tours are sometimes the best as they have all the toys for the family to be happy and safe.

Some Great Barrier Reef tour boats specially cater for the family market and have the correct size floatation vests, pool noodles and masks to suit little faces. They also have specially allocated swimming and paddling enclosures for those children that are not quite ready to float around in the sea and on the larger Great Barrier Reef tours you can even take your babies pram on board.

Visiting islands or sand cays in the middle of the Great Barrier Reef is also a good option to consider for families as the little ones and the grandparents can just wade into the water at their leisure and not be stuck on a boat all day.

Great Barrier Reef from Port Douglas

Outer Barrier Reef Pontoons are also a perfect fit for families as they have all the toys out on the reef such as semi-submersible submarines, glass bottom boats, underwater observatories along with all the correct fitting masks, goggles and snorkels for the little ones.

Some Great Barrier Reef Pontoons even have an enclosed swimming pool for the wee little one's to paddle around in and have some fun and are perfect for non-swimmers.

Unfortunately no Great Barrier Reef tour boats pick you up from the Palm Cove jetty but they do pick you up from your Palm Cove holiday hotel or resort by coach and take you to either Cairns or Port Douglas for your day on Australia's Great Barrier Reef.

Outer Barrier Reef from Port Douglas

Cairns and Palm Cove Day Tours for Thrill Seekers

If your older children are out for some holiday action and adrenaline adventure tours then they can go River Tubing or White Water Rafting, Quad Biking thru rainforests and billabongs, Horse Riding on the beach, Bungy Jumping, Skydiving, Scuba Diving, feeding sharks, or swimming with whales on the Cairns or Port Douglas Great Barrier Reef.

Cairns and Palm Cove is well known as the thrill seekers full on adventure destination for intrepid travelers and backpackers from the world over looking to push their courage to the absolute limits.

If you're into this sort of thing then make sure you get it on film as either no-one will believe you were brave enough to do it or you just want to re-live the enjoyment all over again at your leisure.

There is a huge range of adventurous Cairns and northern beaches tours and activities waiting for you and your family in Palm Cove and the surrounding area. Private Charter Day Tours from Palm Cove

White Water Rafting in Cairns

If peace and privacy is what you are after on your Palm Cove holiday and you want to get around with only your closest and dearest as company then you should consider doing some private charter day touring options like chartering a luxury yacht or motor cruiser to explore the Great Barrier Reef at leisure or a four wheel drive tour of the rainforest and outback with a local driver that can impart their knowledge and history of the region and its inhabitants.

Private charter day tour options from Palm Cove range from Scenic Helicopter touring for small groups or large groups, sole charter of a boat for a days snorkeling, scuba diving or fishing on the Great Barrier Reef, ATV Quad biking in the mountains, chartering an aircraft and spending the day on Lizard Island swimming in the Blue Lagoon with your private charter group.

Palm Cove has so many more private day touring options to offer.

For more Private Charter options see the local experts at The Tour Specialists or call 1300 780 806 and let them arrange the perfect private charter touring options for you and your guests.

Palm Cove Half Day Tours

Due to Palm Coves unique geographic location half day tours are easily done with only short distances of travel to get you to your half day tour departure point. Some half day tour options can commence even before the sun rises if you choose to go hot air ballooning or rafting out to islands just of the Palm Cove beachfront.

Other Palm Cove half day tours commence at more respectable times like the morning, afternoon or even evening. Take a half day trip out to Green Island for a quick dip on the Great Barrier Reef, take a helicopter out to a sand cay for a snorkel, go fishing in the estuary to catch that elusive Barramundi for dinner, go horse riding along the beach, have a delightful spa treatment, go bungy jumping, have breakfast with Australia's largest pride of lions.

These are only some of the half day touring options for you from Palm Cove. Have a look here for a lot more day tour options from Cairns, Port Douglas and Palm Cove. Palm Cove Kuranda and Daintree Rainforest Tours

Cuddle a Koala

Visiting Kuranda from Palm Cove is very easy as you can be picked up from your Palm Cove hotel or resort by coach and taken back towards Cairns to a place called Freshwater to meet the Kuranda Scenic Railway.

You will be issued with a train ticket and a Skyrail ticket and a return coach transfer back to your holiday accommodation which is nice and easy.

Should you have your own hire car you can do a Kuranda self drive but you will still need to pre-book for this to engage the coach transfer between the Kuranda Scenic Rail and the Skyrail service back to your car.

Half Day rainforest tour in an Army Duck

The Daintree  Rainforest and Cape Tribulation Rainforest is one of the worlds most precious and beautiful scenic locations that were saved from the bulldozers in the early eighties by forward thinking greenies.

Scientists from all over the world regularly visit this valuable natural resource and gather information for new medicines, undiscovered wildlife species and tourists now just come to view the splendor of it all.

Daintree and Cape Tribulation day tour operators can pick you up from your Palm Cove holiday accommodation and show you all the highlights of the region in one day.

You can self drive to the Daintree but you really do miss out on seeing the icons and learning all about the significance, importance and interesting history of the region and its inhabitants.

If you do self drive then make sure you watch the Sir Richard Attenborough special on his journey to Cape Tribulation before you go.

Palm Cove Wedding Groups Pre-Post Touring

It's so much more fun when wedding groups and groups of friends can all go on day tours together from Palm Cove in Queensland, and the big bonus is you can even save lots of money when you travel in groups.

Contact the Palm Cove Wedding and Group Touring specialists on 1300 780 806 for some ideas. Wedding groups receive discounts on hotels, resorts and self contained holiday apartment accommodation and day tours.

Kuranda Scenic Rail and Skyrail Gondola Day Tours

Listed as one of the top 3 most popular tours in Cairns, Palm Cove and Tropical North Queensland is a visit to Kuranda the village in the rainforest on top of the Macalister Range National Park Mountains.

The most popular and scenic way to reach the village and then return is by the beautifully restored Kuranda train and Scenic Railway or the Skyrail Rainforest Gondola .

When travelling by train you can choose to purchase an upgrade to the Gold Class carriage and have beverages and snacks served along the way in the more comfortable club carriage seats.

On the Skyrail Gondola you can now also upgrade to an all glass floor gondola and if you are game, even an open air gondola, something definitely not for the faint hearted.

For those guests who have a rental car you may also self-drive to the Smithfield Sky Rail departure station or you can depart from the Kuranda Scenic Railway station at Freshwater.

Kuranda Scenic Railway

Kuranda Scenic Railway

This beautiful old train departs the Freshwater station twice daily heading up the mountain ranges towards the village of Kuranda. Passing majestic cascading waterfalls, deep granite gorges and lace clad mountains and dark tunnels that were originally hand cut thru the mountains by men in the years beginning 1886.

These men toiled for many years and subsequently a lot of lives were lost due to illness and work place accidents in the harsh unrelenting jungle with its swamp like surroundings combined with the forceful tropical heat making life for the workers very difficult.

Today the train journey takes you thru some of the most scenic parts of Tropical North Queensland whilst you sit back relax and listen to the interesting history of the rail lines construction over the carriage speakers and learn about the region and its indigenous inhabitants.

Skyrail Rainforest Cableway

Skyrail Gondola

On the 31 st August 1995 the Skyrail gondola’s ribbon was officially cut and the world’s longest gondola cableway was opened to tourists from the world over to experience the joy of gliding just inches from the tops of the giant World Heritage rainforests below whilst heading up to the village of Kuranda.

In its first year of operation Skyrail was constantly booked out carrying 300 people per hour so in April 1996 Skyrail announced plans to increase the available gondola numbers to a further 67 to meet the increasing demands from tourists and tour companies.

This then increased the carrying capacity to 700 people per hour.

In March 2002 Her Majesty the Queen and the Duke of Edinburgh took a trip on Skyrail up to Kuranda and spent some time in the rainforests at Red Peak Station.

In November 2013 the ever evolving team at Skyrail then introduced 11 Diamond View glass floor gondolas that cater for 5 brave travellers at a time.  These Diamond View glass floor gondolas have now become the most requested and most popular gondolas in probably the world.

Both Skyrail and the Kuranda Scenic Railway are recognised as multi award winning tourist attractions for not only Queensland but also Australia.

If you have a rental car in Palm Cove you may wish to drive yourself to the Smithfield Skyrail terminal or you may book a coach pick up from your hotel accommodation.

barrier reef tours palm cove

At the moment the only thing we are 100% doing is a barrier reef tour when in Palm Cove. Otherwise I'm looking for ideas/suggestions of excursions, trips, things to do, places to see etc while we're in each area - baring in mind we'll have a 5YO with us and the time of year

So far we've found the below but not sure if we've missed anything and what would best given the time of year?

Melbourne - Penguin March, , Melb museum, Sky Deck, Sea life centre, Arthurs Seat sky lift, botanical gardens, Puffing Billy

Sydney - Blue mountains (unsure of best place with child), Taronga Zoo , Opera house & Bridge, Harbour tour, Featherdale wildlife park, Whale watching

Cairns/Palm cove - Barrier reef tour, Kuranda rainforest, Hartley's crocodile adventures

Obviously we wont be able to do everything so any advice or suggestions very welcome?

Currently looking at booking with Trail finders. So far I've heard mostly good things if anyone has experience using them? Only debate at the moment is how much we could save booking everything ourselves Vs the hassle/stress this adds.

If you use the links I gave you on the other forum you’ll have a good start.

Then if you post a rough draft Itinerary, others will chime in with useful ideas & comments.

For accommodation- a nightly range in AUD would be awful.

' class=

What you have listed is all good although you may need to reconsider some things in the available time you have.

In Sydney catch a couple of ferries, particularly the Manly Ferry rather than doing a harbour cruise . You will also be getting to the zoo via ferry. You will need a child Opal card for the 5 year old.

The botanical gardens in Cairns are great for kids, there is quite a few edible fruit trees there which can be enjoyed by kids of all ages.

Thanks Penpal, that's a great help. Do you think a day at Phillip Island is enough or would be worth an overnight in Cowes?

Enchanted Adventure Garden looks great! Only worry would be the weather I guess

The Lions tour will be popular with the locals but I can't see it influencing the prices of accommodation too much. But then maybe I underestimate the British fan base.

Belrose in the Northern Suburbs (20km to the city) has limited public transport and no trains - a hire car would help getting around eg Blue Mts so ask your relatives for advice.

Melbourne - Sydney is one of the busiest air routes in the world so plenty of choice for flights .

Also post #2 the Powerhouse Museum is now closed but we have the Australian Museum

barrier reef tours palm cove

If economy, really only benefit would be with complex itineraries which yours usn’t. Simple open haw into MEL and out if CNS

Business class, they can save you a lot but not always.

They are highly reputable, professional, reliable and knowledgeable.

I would never use them to book accommodation though. Too limited choice. For a place lije Sydney , they will have 2 or 3 x 3 star, 4 stars abd 5 stars, msybe a dozen choices tops. Compare that to hundreds of options andtheywill be no cheaper than booking directly

With a5 yo with you, I’d look at Aparthotels and serviced apartments. Theteare many good options which we can suggest depending on your budget per night in AUD

An alternative to Healesville Sanctuary is Moonlit Sanctuary. Much smaller with a smaller flight show, but still an excellent experience including hand-feeding kangaroos.
