The Best Beach Detours From Orlando

By Terry Ward

The Best Beaches Near Orlando From the Gulf to the Atlantic Coast

A Floridian for more than half my life, the salt life runs through my veins. But before moving closer to the coast in Florida , I spent several years living inland, in Orlando . Every Friday after work, I’d turn my car east along what’s perhaps the most delightfully named toll road in all of Florida–the Beachline Expressway –to make for my then-boyfriend's family’s oceanfront beach apartment in south Cocoa Beach, less than an hour away but a world apart. We’d spend lazy mornings strolling the shoreline with the sandpipers at sunrise, watch pelicans ride the thermals over the rooftops of condos, and catch mellow waves in the surf.

For visitors to Orlando, working in a detour to the beach can be just the salve after a theme park-heavy itinerary in Central Florida. And when it comes to the best beaches near Orlando, you’ve got options. My advice? Head east for the best beaches along the Atlantic Ocean, where there’s usually more motion in the ocean than what awaits on the state’s west coast along the sugar-fine strands of the Gulf of Mexico, which have an appeal all their own. Read on for some of the best beaches near Orlando (defined as within three hours of the swamp-adjacent theme park city).

An ex of the writer described Cocoa Beach as being “like Huntington Beach, California, 50 years ago” for its no-frills surf town vibe.

Cocoa Beach

Besides getting a second mention in this article, my ex would love that I’m sharing what he used to say about Cocoa Beach, along Florida’s Space Coast : “It’s like Huntington Beach, California 50 years ago,” he’d quip. And he wasn’t wrong. The no-frills, authentic surf town where professional surfer Kelly Slater came up charging the waves has a great little beach bar scene. Make time for Coconuts on the Beach , which does a mean pina colada, as well as the even mellower Beach Shack just next door.

A 60-mile drive east of downtown Orlando, Cocoa Beach also has a historic pier with a tiki bar at its tip that’s a prime perch for spotting rocket launches from nearby Cape Canaveral, just north.

Wheelchair-accessible ramps can be found at nearly all the beach access points here, including Jetty Park Beach & Pier , a popular surf spot just north of Port Canaveral that’s great for watching massive cruise ships coming in and out of port. And while there’s not much in the way of luxury hotels in Cocoa Beach, you can’t beat staying at Beach Place Guesthouses, where all accommodations have full kitchens—there are also loaner surfboards and a talking African parrot to greet you.

Playalinda Beach, Canaveral National Seashore

Have your heart set on spending a day lounging on a truly pristine and undeveloped stretch of sand? There’s no better beach day trip from Orlando than Playalinda Beach along Canaveral National Seashore . Roughly 60 miles east of Orlando, it’s a nature lover’s dream and an important habitat for nesting sea turtles, in particular loggerheads and green turtles. The protected shoreline at Playalinda Beach is also a naturalist haven, with a clothing-optional stretch in the area around the beach entrance at parking lot 13 if you want to sunbathe textile-free.

Surfers like Playalinda’s sandy bottom beach break, with gentle peelers rolling ashore—the beach is also a prime spot to get a view of rocket launches staged to the south at Cape Canaveral. In nearby Titusville, the rooftop Space Bar is another coveted spot to catch a rocket launch. Whatever you do, don’t miss the lively local bar scene at Playalinda Brewing Company .

Just an hour or so from Orlando lies New Smyrna Beach a quintessential stretch of East Coast sand with golden sands.

Just an hour or so from Orlando lies New Smyrna Beach, a quintessential stretch of East Coast sand with golden sands.

New Smyrna Beach

Also just about an hour’s drive from Orlando (roughly 55 miles to the northeast), New Smyrna Beach is another quintessential East Coast Florida beach community known for its surf-obsessed residents and golden sands. Interestingly, you can drive your car on dedicated stretches of the beach here (love it or loathe it), a tradition that dates back to the early days of automobiles and racing in the area.

For a hideaway spot to stay on the Indian River, the hospitality and hearty southern breakfasts at Black Dolphin Inn stand apart, with just 14 rooms decorated with fine art and vintage furnishings. Old school Florida fish camp flair and lively sunset happy hours (plus kayak rentals) await at JB’s Fish Camp , which has been around since the '80s and has tables set on a dock above Indian River from which you can often spot frolicking dolphins and manatees.

Vilano Beach

About 108 miles northeast of Orlando and a less touristy alternative to staying in the heart of nearby St. Augustine, Vilano Beach is another favorite coastal town Floridians like to keep close to the chest. Stay steps from the sand in a charming vacation rental from Beach Babes Rentals , such as the Hula Hut or Coral Sea Casa , which is pet-friendly and has a private path through the dunes to the beach. Feast on smoked fish dip and mahi mahi sandwiches overlooking the Tolomato River at Beaches at Vilano and drive into nearby St. Augustine to catch sunset at the 17th century Castillo de San Marcos , where you can tour the historic city’s other fascinating sites like the Oldest Wooden School House and Ponce de Leon’s Fountain of Youth Archaeological Park .

Melbourne Beach

Just south of Cocoa Beach and about 75 miles from Orlando, Melbourne Beach has a more residential vibe as well as gorgeous oceanfront beach parks like the seagrape-lined Spessard Holland North Beach Park and Bonsteel Park (both with ADA-accessible dune crossovers).

Stay beachside at Port D’Hiver , a gorgeous little boutique bed and breakfast right across from the ocean with a collection of rooms spread between the main house, a carriage house, and two satellite cabana properties. Or you can base close to nightlife but still within easy reach of the beach just across the bridge in downtown Melbourne, where the brick streets are lined with galleries, bars, and cafes. Plus, the stylish Hotel Melby has a scene-y rooftop restaurant ( The Landing Rooftop ) serving up all-day brunch and sweeping river and ocean views.

Roughly 100 miles southeast of Orlando on Florida’s Treasure Coast (named for the loot from Spanish galleons recovered offshore), seek out Vero Beach for more of a tropical feel than the northern beaches and water that’s a few shades more sapphire, too. The oceanfront hotels here skew more upscale as well, from the family-friendly Kimpton Vero Beach Hotel & Spa , with spacious suites, and Latin-inspired Costa d’Este Resort & Spa to The Historic Driftwood Resort, composed in part of flotsam and jetsam and listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

Vero Beach’s compact downtown, home to a weekly farmer’s market and lined with cute cafes ( The Lemon Tree , known for its benedicts and lemon blueberry pancakes, is a brunch favorite) and shops, makes it easy to park your car and get around by bike or on foot during your stay.

Pop into the rustic Riverside Cafe for oysters and yellowfin tuna nachos overlooking the Indian River Lagoon then rent a standup paddleboard or kayak from Paddles by the Sea for a self-guided dolphin-spotting tour in the calm waters.

Anna Maria Island sits some 137 miles west of Orlando and is worth a visit for its perfect white sand beaches.

Anna Maria Island sits some 137 miles west of Orlando and is worth a visit for its perfect white sand beaches.

Anna Maria Island

It takes longer to get from Orlando to Florida’s Gulf Coast beaches, which are closer to Tampa. But it’s worth the trek to Anna Maria Island (137 miles west of Orlando) to enjoy postcard perfect white sand beaches lapped by waters that often rival the Caribbean’s in clarity and hue.

Newly opened during the summer of 2023, the adorable Mello On Beach brings a Palm Springs aesthetic to Florida with color-pop, retro furnishings and a boomerang-shaped outdoor pool with oversized floaties. The property is set just back from the dunes and has one, two and three-bedroom apartments, all with full kitchens and private patios that make it easy to settle in and get comfortable. And the outdoor game area is perfect for a game of corn hole or jenga with the family with gulf views.

Anna Maria Island’s appeal comes in its classic Florida small town vibes that are refreshingly free of any chain hotels or shops. Plan a lazy breakfast at Ginny’s and Jane E’s , a gift shop-meets-cafe known for its sticky buns and creme brulee French toast. Then stroll the Anna Maria City pier to learn about Gulf Coast wildlife at the marine science center .

Indian Shores

Located between the busier Gulf Coast beachside burgs of St. Pete Beach and Clearwater Beach, Indian Shores (123 miles west of Orlando) feels a bit like a Florida secret, with retro motels lining the beach, gentle waters lapping it and a shoreline you’ll often share with more wading birds than humans.

Stay right across from the beach along the Intracoastal Waterway at Legacy Vacation Resorts , a hideaway Certified B Corporation property with an outdoor grilling deck overlooking the water, a swimming pool and modern studios, one and two-bedroom apartments, all with full kitchens.

On a stroll down Indian Shores’ spectacular sugar-fine beach, keep an eye out for the Seaside Seabird Sanctuary , tucked away behind a tangle of tropical foliage just back from the sand. Rescued native Florida birds like pelicans, raptors and owls convalesce here before eventually being released back into the wild.

Orlando Excursions

Orlando excursions, tours & day trips.

Something a lot of visitors to Orlando are not aware of is the amount of excellent fully guided package tours, action adventures, airboat rides, sporting events, animal encounters....the list goes on. Many of these tours involve leaving Central Florida and heading South away from the theme parks. Luxury motor coach transportation (or mini bus for smaller groups) is included in a number of tours, as are appropriate meals en route. Apart from the convenience of not having to drive yourself, package tours often include elements that a visitor probably would not have booked on their own. So, why not be a little adventurous? It’s certainly something different from spending the whole day at one park or location, and these packages really are excellent value for money.

Take a break from Walt Disney World Resort and Universal Orlando Resort, with a fun and interesting day trip or excursion.

8 beaches close to orlando.

Family day in Cocoa Beach

By Lauren Tjaden

No visit to  Orlando  is complete without a trip to the seashore, and  great beaches on the Atlantic Ocean  are only about an hour away from the City Beautiful. These public beaches are not only the closest to Orlando, they also possess distinctly different personalities. So, whatever your mood, you’re sure to find a beach that's not only close, but perfect for you.

Beaches are listed from north to south.

beach tours orlando

Ponce Inlet, just a few waves south of Daytona beach, boasts a sweet little park, a great beach and the tallest lighthouse in Florida.

- Lauren Tjaden for VISIT FLORIDA

1. Daytona Beach

This spirited city is famed for cars, racing, arts, culture and heritage. Tradition demands you roll down your car windows and cruise the hard-packed sands of its beach.

But you can do it all in Daytona Beach, which is the closest beach to Orlando on our list: enjoy watersports, motorcycle racing, kart racing, deep sea fishing and golfing, plus world-class dining and shopping

Investigate its legendary pier, and zoom over to Daytona International Speedway. If you want to spend a night or two at the beach, this destination is ideal not only because of how near it is to Orlando, but because it offers an abundance of accommodations right on the Atlantic

(58 minutes / 53.81 miles from Orlando)

2. Ponce Inlet

Ponce Inlet features a wide beach, thick with sand you can drive on, watersports that include parasailing, jet skiing, fishing and renting a speedboat, and even a handsome lighthouse – Florida’s tallest – that challenges you to climb it.

If you have an aversion to high rises and crowds but love adventure, nature and awe-inspiring beauty, this getaway beach near Orlando is for you .

(1 hour 8 minutes / 61.60 miles from Orlando)

3. New Smyrna Beach

The very definition of a perfect beach day trip not far from Orlando, this charming enclave is renowned for its surfing, but that’s just the tip of the sandbar.

You can cruise its hard-packed sand in your car until you find the perfect spot for your beach towel.

Enjoy an array of watersports or fabulous fishing, or just kick back by the waves. Save some energy to discover its quirky shops and vibrant arts community. And don’t miss digging into a generous burger or fresh seafood at Breakers, an open-air restaurant located smack-dab on the beach.

(1 hour 3 minutes / 55.66 miles from Orlando)

Waves crashing on Cocoa Beach, just over an hour from Orlando, FL.

Cocoa Beach is the perfect place to learn to surf.

4. Canaveral National Seashore

Picture impressive dunes giving way to vast sweeps of empty sand, the music of the surf and wind and nothing more, and you’ll have Canaveral National Seashore about right.

This utterly tranquil escape boasts the longest expanse of pristine shore in Florida. Fish, swim, go hiking, or just unwind on the beach. Make sure to bring snacks, bottled water, sunscreen and insect repellent since you won’t find them in the park.

(1 hour 15 minutes / 64.55 miles to north entrance from Orlando)

5. Cocoa Beach

For the quintessential Florida beach experience, escape to popular Cocoa Beach, just over an hour from Orlando.   Explore its famed pier that extends 800 feet into the ocean, a historical landmark boasting five restaurants, four bars, gift shops, fishing, and free live musical entertainment.

Indulge in parasailing, windsurfing, kiteboarding, or learn to surf on its gentle waves. Save time to discover the Ron Jon Surf Shop. It’s the world's largest surf shop, encompassing 52,000 square feet chock-full of beach gear .

(1 hour 9 minutes / 59.57 miles from Orlando)

6. - 8. Satellite Beach, Melbourne Beach and Indialantic

The small towns of Satellite Beach, Melbourne Beach and Indialantic feel like old-time Florida, devoid of crowds, T-shirt shops and pretention.

Nestled between the Banana River, the Indian River Lagoon and the Atlantic, these Space Coast destinations are brimming with nature, water sports and outdoor recreation of all kinds, never mind generous, mostly-empty beaches rich with cinnamon-hued sand.

A turtle-walk with the Sea Turtle Preservation Society is a not-to-be-missed treat.

(1 hour 13 minutes / 67.35 miles; 1 hour 21 minutes / 74.11 miles; and 1 hour 25 minutes / 75.96 miles from Orlando, respectively)

Orlando Airboat Rides

One of the things Florida is most known for is its famous airboat tours. Sign up for this fun adventure whether you’re in Fort Lauderdale or Miami, within Everglades National Park, or Orlando on Shingle Creek, on the headwaters of the Florida Everglades.

You won’t soon forget an exciting airboat ride when you visit the Orlando area, with a chance to see Bald Eagles and other endemic tropical birds, alligators, and crocodiles (maybe even a baby alligator).

Airboat rides are particularly popular amongst nature lovers. These special boats allow you to glide on the unique marshes and swampland of the Central Florida area. We thoroughly enjoyed our Florida airboat experience.

Sign up for a 90-minute fun and educational Orlando airboat tour to encounter the real Florida with experienced captains. Alternatively, secure your spot for a 1-hour sunset airboat tour and hope for one of Florida’s famous colorful sunsets.

Most airboat tours take place rain or shine. Just in case, we recommend traveling to Florida with a poncho or thin raincoat of some sort. Be sure to check in for your tour at least 30 minutes before the experience.

Orlando Boat Tour on an Airboat with Transportation

This tour includes pick up and drop off in Central Florida (including designated Disney World and Universal hotels), a BBQ lunch, a printed photo, and admission to their animal rescue Wildlife Park, where you can see birds, big cats, and reptiles.

The entire experience – from transportation to the boat ride – lasts around 7 hours, including the drive to and from the Everglades area. The Florida Everglades are approximately 45 minutes to an hour's drive each way from Orlando. Choose from a 30-minute or 60-minute airboat ride when you book your experience .

Orlando Sailing Tours

How about enjoying Orlando’s lakes with wind power? Sailing tours are the perfect way to glide on the water. And a sunset sail is incredibly romantic, to boot!

Private Morning Sail

Set sail on a 2-hour private sailing tour, starting at 10:00 am. Adventure awaits on Lake Fairview for up to four guests.

This area is just north of College Park near downtown Orlando and 15 minutes from Orlando’s Lieu Gardens. Don’t forget to bring towels if you want, though water is provided (and lakes are calm anyway, so you shouldn’t really get wet!).

Advanced reservations are required.

Private Lake Sunset Sail

Sail on Lake Fairview, approximately 10 minutes from downtown Orlando, 30-35 minutes from the Disney theme parks (including the Disney Springs area), and 25 minutes from Universal.

This 2-hour private Orlando boat tour can fit up to four people, and they allow you to bring your own snacks and beverages onboard. We recommend bringing a bottle of wine or champagne!

We recommend bringing along a wine tumbler set for your sailboat adventure!

Kayaking Tours

Connect with nature from the comfort of a kayak and get in some exercise too. Orlando boat tour options for kayaking are plentiful.

Kayak with Manatees

Head 45 minutes north of Orlando for your chance to kayak with manatees! These cute and friendly mammals are famous in the Sunshine State, where they come to enjoy the warm water for the winter.

Whether you’re a novice kayaking trying it for the first time, or an experienced pro, this tour is for you if you want to see a plethora of wildlife.

Check out this popular tour with 5-star reviews

Glass Bottom Boat Kayak Tours

If you want to see the fish below the water’s surface without snorkeling, sign up for a glass-bottom kayak tour. See through the bottom of the boat on this Orlando boat tour and have the chance to view the colorful fish and marine plant life beneath you.

Try a Rock Springs guided kayak eco-tour as you glide on the crystal-clear water for two hours. You’ll learn about the local ecosystem, stop for photos, and have the opportunity to swim in the springs. Opt to jump into the water from a rope swing for a thrill during this adventure.

You can also opt for a sunset tour in a glass-bottom kayak . Paddle through the Winter Park Chain of Lakes and canals in a peaceful setting. Your knowledgeable guide will point out interesting nature homes along the way and share some history of the area. You’ll also be able to stop for photos where you like!

This tour is likely to sell out: Reserve Now

Winter Park Evening Clear Kayak Glow in the Dark Tour

If you want to add a fun element to your kayaking adventure, sign up for a Winter Park kayak tour at night with a glow-in-the-dark kayak. The boats are illuminated with nighttime lighting!

They will surely be a good photo opp and fun outing as the lights make the water beneath you glow.

Another great option is this Neon Night Glow Paddleboard or Clear Kayak experience on Lake Ivanhoe.

This unique boat tour allows you to see Orlando’s skyline at night as you paddle along with the help of your guides, the moonlight, and the colorful lights beneath your kayak or paddleboard.

Winter Park Scenic Boat Tour

One of our favorite Orlando boat tours is in Winter Park. It was established in the 1930s, decades before Walt Disney World opened in Lake Buena Vista.

This pontoon boat tour starts near the well-known Park Avenue area. Set out on your scenic cruise from Lake Osceola to the Winter Park Chain of Lakes as your guide takes you through the manmade canals.

Sail past stunning homes in Winter Park, where you will have breathtaking views of the opulent private homes in the area (which is one of the reasons we enjoy the boat tour).

You will have a chance to see wonderful some of Florida’s beautiful birds, like Blue Herons and large cranes, as you travel on several lakes.

Each boat holds a maximum of 18 passengers. Be sure to bring cash or a check to buy your tickets because credit cards are not accepted. We advise purchasing tickets in the morning on weekends, even if you plan on going later in the day. It’s a very popular tour, and tickets often sell out quickly.

Winter Park Scenic Boat Tour is closed on Christmas Day. Otherwise, tours leave daily on the hour, starting at 10:00 am. The last tour is at 4:00 pm.

Day Trip Boat Tours from Orlando

While the Orlando boat tours listed above are within 30 minutes, on average, from Orlando, it’s worth mentioning there are more boat tour options nearby within a 2-hour drive. Here are some additional Central Florida boat tour options.

Mount Dora Lake Tours

One of our favorite destinations from Central Florida is 45 minutes north: the quaint town of Mount Dora . There’s so much to see and do there in the afternoon or morning; a boat tour is the best way to extend your trip to a whole day.

Take a 2-hour pontoon boat tour with a departure point at the historic hotel, the Lakeside Inn. Enjoy your leisurely cruise around Lake Dora and The Harris Chain of Lakes, including the famed Dora Canal.

The all-weather 25’ boats can cruise rain or shine thanks to their retractable clear covers for the sides of the boat. Choose from one of two daytime tours, or their third option to cruise during sunset.

Clearwater Beach with Dolphin Encounter Cruise

This 12-hour full-day tour begins with pick-up at 7:30 am. You’ll head west of Orlando to the popular Florida destination (Clearwater Beach), where you will take a cruise to encounter bottlenose dolphins in their natural habitat.

While this means that you aren’t guaranteed to spot dolphins, your tour guide will do his or her very best to find them. You may see these beautiful mammals up close by the boat or further in the distance if they appear in the ocean. Part of the fun is the anticipation.

A one-hour dolphin tour boat ride is sandwiched between hours of free time on a Gulf Coast beach. For only $10 more, you can purchase a wristband for the boat ride that allows you to have unlimited beer, wine, and vodka punch.

Pickup and drop off are included at one of three major locations of your choice (Disney areas included). This means that all you have to do is sign up for the tour and be at that location for pick-up time.

Choose from the three pick-up locations listed below:

  • Walt Disney World area, on Epcot Resorts Blvd. (northern area of the parks)
  • Walt Disney World area, at Maingate Lakeside Resort in Kissimmee (area of the Disney World theme parks that is further south)
  • International Drive (close to Universal) at Senor Frogs

Clear Canoe Boat Tour Near Orlando at Silver Springs

This clear canoe boat tour is approximately halfway between Orlando and Gainesville at Silver Springs. The drive is approximately an hour and 45 minutes from downtown Orlando.

You’ll do a self-guided tour after the kayak company representative meets you and gives you a laminated map and some brief instructions. Paddle near Cypress Trees and see turtles, ducks, birds, and a chance to see manatees during the winter season, when they swim to Florida’s warm waters.

Dan and I often like to explore an area freely, on our own. Maybe you’re the same way! If so, this is a great tour for you in the Orlando area, as long as you can rent a car to get to the meeting point or take a taxi/Uber or Lyft there.

Orlando Boat Tours at Walt Disney World

Did you know that you can rent motorized boats at Disney World? It’s one of the best things to do at Walt Disney World, besides the parks.

Rent a Sun Tracker® Pontoon boat by the half-hour for up to 10 people. You can also opt to kayak or canoe from Fort Wilderness by the hour.

One of the most singular boat tours in Orlando, or perhaps anywhere, is an Amphicar boat tour. Be a passenger and the envy of all onlookers in a cool convertible car that drives right into the water. This experience is available at Disney Springs restaurant, The Boathouse.

Lastly, you can book a specialty cruise to see the fireworks. You don’t even have to be a hotel guest to do so! Snacks and soft drinks are included in a memorable cruise on a 25’ boat.

You can also request for a festive banner and/or balloons to be set up on the boat, which is included in the cost (request at the time of booking). It’s a great thing to do for you and your partner or up to 10 guests total, whether a proposal, anniversary treat, or family reunion.

What to Bring for Orlando Boat Tours

Florida's heat can be brutal, depending on the time of year. No matter the month, you definitely need to protect your skin from the sun. The sun in FL is strong, year-round.

Be sure to pack the following if you’ll be on the water in sunny Florida:

  • Refillable water bottle (the ice will stay intact for hours in the MiiR bottle, our favorite insulated wide-mouth bottle)
  • Reef-safe sunscreen
  • SPF lip balm
  • Eco-friendly bathing suit
  • Rash guard

Conclusion for Best Orlando Boat Tours

Whether you want to captain a boat yourself, row your way through Florida’s waters in a kayak, see gators on an educational airboat ride, or go on a romantic sailboat cruise around one of Central Florida’s lakes, an Orlando boat is a wonderful Florida activity.

It will connect you with nature, get you out in fresh air, and allow your body to absorb vitamin D in the Florida sunshine. Sign up for an Orlando boat tour and explore this southern state in a unique and adventurous way.

Things To Do

Travel | hike canaveral seashore’s klondike beach: a 13-mile trek along wild florida coastline.

Chris Stevens lands on top of a piece of driftwood on Klondike Beach in the backcountry of Canaveral National Seashore. (Patrick Connolly/Orlando Sentinel)

Booming waves crash one over another while pelicans fly overhead and shorebirds forage in the sand, comprising the kind of idyllic sunny beachside scene Florida is known for. Except this time, there aren’t people or high-rise condos for miles around.

This was the view during a 13-mile hike on Klondike Beach, the sandy stretch of Canaveral National Seashore that lies between Apollo Beach on the north end and Playalinda Beach on the south side. I was joined by Chris Stevens, a fellow explorer and outdoor writer for Florida Hikes who is known on Instagram (with his wife and family) as the Sunshine State Seekers .

Chris Stevens, right, joined Central Florida Explorer Patrick Connolly during a hike on Klondike Beach in the backcountry of Canaveral National Seashore on March 29, 2024. (Patrick Connolly/Orlando Sentinel)

It was Good Friday, and something felt almost biblical about our pilgrimage along the undeveloped seashore as we visited the church of nature and fully immersed ourselves in the wild Floridian coastline. At least we had the weather on our side, with high temperatures in the low 70s and a north wind at our backs the whole way.

I don’t know exactly when or how the idea hatched, but I had this hike on my radar for several years and finally found an ideal day and someone crazy enough to do it with me. My pack and gear kit for the day included 3 liters of water, an Arizona tea, a Publix sub, apples, a wide-brimmed straw hat, a sun shirt and hiking boots.

Adventurers who attempt this should be prepared with plenty of sun protection, food and water for hours in the open sun with no amenities. A $5 backcountry permit (available at either ranger station) is required to venture past Apollo Beach lot 5 and Playalinda Beach lot 13.

We set off southward just after 7 a.m. from the end of the road at Apollo Beach, catching a magnificent sunrise with an amber horizon and whispy clouds over the Atlantic as a bright half-moon shone above the Mosquito Lagoon. We first took a turn onto a section of trail or access road on the lagoon side, which continued for several miles as we observed vibrant sea grape leaves, bright red sea beans, white moonflowers in bloom, the occasional prickly pear cactus and mangrove forests. On both sides of the trail, we were flanked by lush green vegetation and saw palmettos.

Eventually, the trail lets out at the beach, which covers about 2/3 of the hike (or you can take the beach the whole way). A note on the Canaveral National Seashore website advertises that crossing protected dunes is unlawful, so be sure to contact a ranger for the best guidance on where to hike and where to avoid.

A half-moon can be seen above the Mosquito Lagoon just after dawn during a hike on Klondike Beach in the backcountry of Canaveral National Seashore on March 29, 2024. (Patrick Connolly/Orlando Sentinel)

It’s remarkable to see so much sand and sea without any humans. Small crabs poked their heads out of the sand, curious but cautious at the sight of visitors.

Away from the development of New Smyrna Beach and Titusville, Chris realized there was nothing between us and Africa but the vast ocean (unless you were to stop in Bermuda). We were engulfed by the natural Florida coastline with no reminders of civilization — except for trash and debris that had washed up with the tide, a consistent sight for most of the hike.

I packed grabbers (which Chris graciously agreed to carry), but we ultimately decided that it would be too energy-intensive to walk on sand for 13 miles with heavy bags of trash. However, we picked up a few stray balloons and pieces of litter that traveled with us into the trash can at the end of the hike.

Central Florida Explorer Patrick Connolly takes a break during a hike on Klondike Beach in the backcountry of Canaveral National Seashore on March 29, 2024. (Patrick Connolly/Orlando Sentinel)

We soon stumbled upon a small shack along the beach labeled as a biological field station. I imagined it would be used by scientists conducting wildlife research for breaks and storage. We welcomed the chance to stop on its small porch for an early lunch and a snack.

A few volunteers on ATVs, likely conducting sea turtle nesting surveys, seemed surprised to see any other human life out there. Those chance encounters made us believe this hike isn’t something people do very often.

An odd, ambiguous piece of debris suggests either a buoy or an item related to space travel during a hike on Klondike Beach in the backcountry of Canaveral National Seashore on March 29, 2024. (Patrick Connolly/Orlando Sentinel)

As we meandered onward, we stopped to look at odd pieces of washed-up debris, including large buoys and one ambiguous piece that could have been either maritime or space-related. At one point, we witnessed a trio of roseate spoonbills soaring over on the lagoon side, and pelican flyovers continued as the afternoon approached.

As we resumed our trek southward, closing in on the final quarter of our remaining mileage, NASA’s Vehicle Assembly Building came into view on the hazy horizon. As my mind wandered, I thought of Doris Leeper, a longtime resident of New Smyrna Beach and artist who was instrumental in creating Canaveral National Seashore in 1975.

With the risk of widespread development along the seashore, Leeper fought to preserve the land around her home alongside the Mosquito Lagoon, where she lived with her two Great Danes and created art.

While enjoying the serene scenery unencumbered by beachfront properties and crowds, I also thought about the Indigenous people who first inhabited this stretch of coastline up to 14,000 years ago and the Timucuan people who lived in harmony with the natural landscape for centuries before Europeans ever set foot in Florida.

Within the last few miles of our hike, a ranger pulled up on his ATV and stopped, saying, “I’ve been following your tracks for a long time.”

He asked if we needed any water, but we came prepared for hours outside, although I admitted that we might have a few screws loose for attempting such an endeavor. This wasn’t the kind of outing most normal people decide to do.

As we approached Playalinda’s Beach 13, preparing for the sight of nude sunbathers, we found a congregation of pelicans, flamingoes, gulls and terns gathered on the shore of the lagoon with cormorants perched in the background. We were mindful of our distance but curious to get closer and join in the social affair.

In concluding our hike, I replaced the lens cap on my camera as we began to pass sunbathers in their natural state. We clothed hikers were the ones who looked out of place, gathering curious glances from people inevitably wondering, “Where the heck did they come from?”

After 6 1/2 hours in the sun, Chris and I were delighted to see his wife, Chelsey, and their infant son, who arrived to pick us up from the parking lot. We rushed to Playalinda Brewing Company in Titusville for sandwiches and beer, the most welcome treats after a long day of hiking.

Ultimately, this adventure represented a challenging but beautiful immersion in the wild Florida coastline, one that I won’t soon forget.
